Win7 very slow, internet slow, and even Chrome is giving us fits.

Q: Win7 very slow, internet slow, and even Chrome is giving us fits.

I know it's malware, and from reading the forums I didn't run Comboware (i think that was the name) because the previous issue involved Symantec AV protection. I use AVG, Ad-Aware and Malwarebytes on this machine so didn't use previous advice. BTW, love you guys and use bleepingcomputer all the time to check startup programs. Thank you!

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

I can't seem to pinpoint the problem here. My computer can't seem to connect to the internet at the speeds my internet provider gives. I'm supposed to get 12 Mbps, but I only get about 4. I thought it was the adapter, but I can't be sure anymore. Before my fresh new reinstall of Windows 7, the adapter gave me up to about 11 or 12 Mbps on average. But after the new install of Windows 7, my speed dropped drastically

The same versions of Windows 7 were installed on the machine, and drivers are up to date according to DriverMax and Windows update. The adapter is the Airlink 101 Ultra Mini USB Wireless Adapter.

If anyone can help, I would really appreciate it!!

when i use a 150Mbps adapter my actual speed will be half 75 Mbs so i use a 300Mbs so a get 150 Mbs

I have been reading your forums for sometime and have been able to fix minor problems with your help, so I hope you guys can help me now.

I have a Gateway laptop 3018gz that I purchase three years ago. My extended warranty gave out in August and soon after I started having problems. The latest one is a doozy.

On 9/8, it was working fine. No new installs, except an update to Yahoo Messenger. I turned it off that night before going to bed.

On 9/9, went to turn it on, it gave me a BSOD,and instantly restarted. I was able to stop the restart, but never got the BSOD again. I restarted it and it froze and the screen scrambled. Has been doing this ever since. Sometimes the display won't even come up. I can hear the computer going (I hear the fan and the HD) and I hooked it up to another monitor to see if the screen was going, but it didn't work either. I was able to do a recovery on it, but just as it finished the screen froze again and scrambled.

I initially thought this was some sort of virus or trojan horse, but now I am not so sure.

Please help!!!!!!

A:Laptop Giving Me Fits!

Can you give us any info from the BSODs? Are you able to start in safe mode to look at the event viewer?

If you can start in safe mode, you may wish to uninstall Yahoo Messenger for the moment. Look at the add - remove programs area and see if you notice anything out of the ordinary.

Everytime I try to open a folder in Windows 2000 I get an error message that says "Your current security settings prohibit running ActiveX controls on this page. As a result the page might not display correctly" And of course all that shows is an empty folder. I can get to my files by using search, but obviously that is very limiting. Here's how I got where I am. Visited lot sof less than reputable websites. Lots of Hijackers etc. Loaded Microsoft Beta anti spy software. It didn't work very well. I piddled with the settings and got myself in a lot of trouble. I did everything I could think of including uninstalling the software as well as re loading Windows 2000 over the top of the load I was running. I would gladly reformat my hraddrive and start from scratch if I could get to and save my files, but without being able to see in my folders, it would take a thousand years to find and save all the data I want to save. I've done some cursory research and experimentation with ActiveX, but needless to say, I don't have a clue what I'm doing. Any suggestions? I'm waiting for that whiz to come blazing in and save the day. I'll follow your suggestions and report back. Please help.

Thanks,
Jim

A:Active X giving me fits

Hi Jim.

ActiveX can be a real pain at times. When IE settings are altered, you can find yourself in a world of problems. The following M$ link may be able to help with that.

http://www.microsoft.com/windows/ie/using/howto/security/setup.mspx

Try running an online scan with Trend Micro (A/S) here:
http://www.trendmicro.com/spyware-scan/ It uses ActiveX so you may be unable to run it. The AV online scan is the same.
http://housecall60.trendmicro.com/en/start_corp.asp

The following "Freeware" program may be able to readjust your settings so that you are able to backup your files & do a reformat.

I recently did a destructive recovery system restore.... OK, no problems getting everything back up to working order, re-installed chrome, my VGA driver, etc...

But my damn wireless network adapter just won't stay connected when I try to download something. Literally, anything makes this thing lose connection other than just surfing the web. Loading videos and downloading are the culprits. This is what the networking utility looks like before I d/l. It'll usually go for about 5 seconds, then turns to this. I downloaded the most recent driver from Dynex, still no luck. Unplugging it from its little stand, waiting 3 seconds and then plugging it back in makes it work again, but the second I go to download anything again it switches back to that other disconnected mode. Restarting the comp will also do the same.

Thanks.

Hello again:

I don't mean to hog the forum but I have one more issue which has me at wit's end. I recently purchased OneDrive because I need to back up all that music I mention in the thread below among other things. So anyway, when I first started using it, it seemed to function seamlessly... until I noticed that the default setting was to sync to C: - which is inexplicable. I mean, if you are paying for 1TB of cloud storage and your system drive only has 500GB total, well over half of which is full, why would you sync twice that size data to C:? Anyway, no one here is expected answer for Microsoft's quirks but I panicked because I could figure out how to stop the sync and I was fast approaching "critical mass" on C:. So I gave remote access to a tech from Microsoft's OneDrive department and told him to just delete the music cache folder after unticking the sync to C: option (which I had been unable to find). This solved the problem, or so I thought. However, eve... Read more

Greetings!

Bought my PC last September. All was well until 4-6 weeks ago. I began having to double click the back button to get the browser to back up. Hi,
In trying to re-install W-7 Pro from a Microsoft install disk, I formatted the System partition and need to provide a driver to the install procedure. I've run into a problem: I downloaded the Western Digital driver to a thumb-drive but when I tell the W-7 installation procedure to find the driver on the thumb drive, and "DriverRestore.exe" from Western Digital appears on the file directory, I select the file, and press "Open", the installation procedure responds with "The specified location doesn't contain any information about your hardware"
But I'm sure that file is for the correct Hard Drive.
What to do?
This is a great Forum,
Thank you

OK, my pc is crashing a couple of times a day at this point. It runs fine all day while I'm working. As soon as it sits idle for a little while it's crashing. Not always, but it seems like it's pretty regular as far as being idle. It's completely locked up every morning when I wake up that's for sure. My event log shows tons of these sbp2port entries. Every couple of seconds for as long as it takes to lock up. I've done research on the error and it seems everyone is having trouble figuring out an answer. I've adjusted my paging file settings already. I've checked the file integrity with my xp install disk. Other than that I don't know where to look.

I read somewhere that malware can disguise themselves as this type of file, but I don't know if that's what I'm dealing with. I DO know that I got the virtumonde adware recently and got rid of it successfully..... I think. I don't know if this is still some remnants from that issue.

PLEASE HELP!

Thanks. Matt

I just rebuilt my computer and am having trouble with my Visoneer scanner. I'm using Paperport 11 with it and have all the drivers installed. The scanner actually works fine, scans the image but when it's done, the image shows up and a:

"PaperPort Scan Manager has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience."

error message comes up and the program locks up.

Anyone have an idea or something I could try? It worked fine on my computer before.

Thanks!

So where to start with this computer. I guess I'll start with the foundation of the problem
I own a Dell Inspiron of which I use fairly less than my separate computer. Lately, a lot of problems have begun to arise.
My computer runs incredibly slow. I've gone about cleaning it with CCleaner and checking for Malware using Malwarebytes. Overall I began to see the health of my computer increase as time passed and I was happy with the results. That is until I put the computer to the side for a week to let it cool down so to speak.
When I booted up, I was greeted with the Windows 7 logo for about 5 minutes, incredibly longer than the last time I tended to it. When I finally logged in to the computer itself, everything seemed normal.
As per my normal suspicions, I instantly ran Malwarebytes. Instead of opening however, it instant closed. Rather disappointed, I turned instead to finishing the install of AVG. I was greeted there with the installation client stating that there was no network to complete the install.
I was connected to the internet without any exclaimation point for a warning? That couldn't be right.
So just out of testing, I opened up Steam to see if it was an overall problem. It prompted me with the idea that it had no internet connection. Same with Razer Cortex. I checked Windows Firewall to ensure they were all in the exceptions, and they were. Strange.
I opened Chrome and found that it instantly connected to Google. Every other application but Chrome had no intern... Read more

This has been a long standing problem for us.  Accessing the internet, which is the primary use of this computer, is extremely slow.  I use the free version of Avast.  I have increased memory, run CCleaner regularly, run Malwarebytes, Hitman Pro , Spybot on occassion to see if it will catch something.  The performance improves immediately after running those, but then returns to extremely slow.  I do not use add-ons/extensions.

This is an older system running windows Vista with service pack 2.

Any and all help would be appreciated.

HijackThis doesn't handle Windows 7 well. In your case I need to see a final DDS Log.
I would remove HijackThis using the Add/Remove Programs list.

Download DDS by sUBs from one of the following links if you no longer have it available.  Save it to your desktop.

1: DDS.scr (Not recommended if you use Chrome to download this .scr file. Use the other options.)
2: DDS.pif
3: DDS.COM

Double click on the DDS icon, allow it to run.
A small box will open, with an explanation about the tool.  No input is needed, the scan is running.
Notepad will open with the results.
Follow the instructions that pop up for posting the results.[/list]Please note:  You may have to disable any script protection running if the scan fails to run.

Please just paste the contents of the DDS.txt log in your next post. DO NOT attach the log.===

While using computer last night trying to update my games and the various applications to ensure the system is safe, I kept getting these Zone Alarm Alerts that  bit-torrent rundl32 - u torrent and other various run32dll WinSys alerts notifying me that they are trying to access the internet. when I went to open Zone Alarm, I was startled to notice that both the fire wall the id protection tabs were disabled leaving my system vulnerable.  The last time I checked to update Zone Alarm was just a couple days ago.  I have this set to be done manually. And, when I checked it a couple days ago, the Zone Alarm was all up and running fine. So, either the update I just completed on it last night caused the program to be rendered vulnerable, or possibly whatever possible virus I have on my wife's computer caused ZoneAlarm to crash.  However,  I select the deny option on all request on the above mentioned alerts to access the internet.  I did not download this U-Torrent or whatever other program is causing all the problems, but evidently found out that my son is the culprit. He has been trying to download free peer to peer mp3's again for his Ipod.  So,  I ran the free version of Avast Antivirus, and it discovered (1) virus, called, " Wind32.Malware-Gen. After I ran the initial scan, I rebooted and let it complete the full bootscan.  It stated that It eliminated the infection and stored it in the Virus Chest.  Next, I ran a free ESET onli... Hi!
I have a problem of slow Internet. My speed is supposed to be 20 mbps (and when I do a speedtest, that’s what it shows as well), but my Internet is really slow, whether in Firefox, Chrome or even in the iTunes Store on iTunes, or loading images in emails in Thunderbird. Most of the pages take a really long time to load (sometimes not even loading at all so I have to refresh) and I don’t understand why. I tried restarting my computer, running Firefox in safe mode, checking for viruses and running Malware Bytes and CCleaner, but nothing I tried changed anything. Internet is at its normal speed on all my other computers and devices. My computer in itself is sometimes a little slow, but a few weeks ago, the Internet speed was still normal no matter what.
Also, in case you need to know, I’m on Windows 7.
Any suggestions for what I could try?
Thanks in advance!

Hi all,
Well I described in details in the above fields what exactly happened and what I tried to do.

Right now I am on this pc, using MS edge, and I have internet and all seems fine. But all is not fine - clearly. I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling chrome by the way. I reset browser settings several times and I have no extensions other than google's own (google docs, google sheets etc)
So I am wondering, how to fix this.
If I scan, every program says there is nothing on my pc. But If I use chrome, things just die (after quite some time). I'm considering just living w/o chrome but I mean - how can this not be fixable

Sorry for the long texts - I really searched this forum and tried all I could find. But I just can't solve this on my own it seems. Help is very appreciated.

Hello,
Fix with Farbar Recovery Scan Tool

This fix was created for this user for use on that particular machine.
Running it on another one may cause damage and render the system unstable.
Download attached fixlist.txt file and save it to the Desktop:

Both files, FRST and fixlist.txt have to be in the same location or the fix will not work!
Right-click on icon and select Run as Administrator to start the tool.
(XP users click run after receipt of Windows Security Warning - Open File).
Press the Fix button just once and wait.
If for some reason the tool needs a restart, please make sure you let the system restart normally. After that let the tool complete its run.
When finishes FRST will generate a log on the Desktop, called Fixlog.txt.

Please attach it to your reply.

In my Vista Home Premium, my internet speed reached up to 144mbp/s. Now that I have Windows 7, it lurks around 10mbp/s. These speed are way too slow for me, as I spend 90% of my time on the computer online. Anyone know how to fix this? In Vista, when my network was a little slow, all I did was click Diagnose, and then Reset Network Adapter. That did the trick. I'm not sure how to do that within Windows 7. I also got an error when I clicked Diagnose.

Running older PC Clone 2.0 Ghz Dual CPU Pentium, 1GB Ram Win XP Home Edition system.

While navigation on Internet Explorer or Google Chrome, system runs extrememly slow and/or crashes. When using applications such as Itunes, Email, or simply opening up Word and other applications, it runs very slow and almost seems to stop. The IE7 that was on the computer had changed to an operate with add-ons off as a result of the infection. I downloaded and reinstalled IE7 and this seems to have fixed that problem for the time being. MalwareBytes and SuperAntiSpy icons dissappeared from my desktop. When trying to use them from the Start / Menu options the programs no longer worked. I reinstalled them and they appear to work fine now. However, the system still seems to run very slow over all and its performance is greatly hindered.

Next, I ran free version of SuperAntiSpyware and all it detected was a couple Adware cookies. Secondly, I ran free version of Malware Bytes Anti-Malware and it detected PUP.GamePlayLab infections located in the Registry Key: HKLM\SOFTGWARE\Microsoft\Windows.... These files were removed and quarantined by MWB. Thirdly, I ran Old Timer's TFC and then rebooted the computer and it appeared to run a little faster, but still sluggish while using IE7. So, finally, I ran ESET Free Online Scanner, and it detected "Win32/Toolbar.Babylon and Win32/TopMedia.a" virus infections. Scan took about 2 1/2 hours. I set it to search the drives/ar... Read more

A couple of weeks ago I installed Windows 8 (fresh install from scratch, not an update) on my computer. I do a lot of web browsing and over the last couple of weeks I've been using Windows 8, I could swear the web browsing wasn't as fast at it used to be on Windows 7.
I then noticed I was having major issues bringing up my router's control panel (ASUS RT-N56U) so thinking it was my router I upgraded the firmware. Turned out, the Avast Anti-Virus I was running has issues with Windows 8. I removed AVAST and turned on Windows Defender (which in Windows 8 is also an anti-virus program now referred to MSE - Miscrosoft Security Essentials). MSE has gotten fairly good reviews so I decided to use it, for maximum compatibility with Windows 8.

However, although the router control panel would now come up okay, browsing still seemed to not be quite as fast as it used to be. I sat down at the old 5-year old Dell Desktop next to me that is running Windows 7, both computers were connected to the router via Gigabit Ethernet. I tested network speeds with Speedtest.net to make sure they were both getting the same Internet speeds (which they were.) I found a couple 'heavy' web pages to test:

www.epicurious.com (home page)
sports.yahoo.com (home page)

The browsing was MUCH faster on the Windows 7 machine!! So I decided to do more of a controlled test.

Go to Start/Search and type CMD. Right click the CMD results and Run As Administrator. In the Elevated Command Prompt type chkdsk /R and press enter. Now type a Y for Yes and restart the computer. Check Disk will go through 5 stages. It will take a long while.
You can also download the ISO image for Seatools in my signature. Burn the image to CD using IMGBurn also in my signature. Boot off of the newly created CD and run the Short and Long tests on the HDD. If either test fails, the HDD needs to be replaced.

Well that's quite a difference. Something that installed with Photoshop must be causing this problem.

Intel E2160 1.8ghz dual
2gb of RAM DDR2 5200
brand new Win 7 64 bit installation, all updates to SP1
IE 11

I upgraded my mom's computer from Vista to Win 7. It is an older machine that I bought her back in 2008 I think....I know that the RAM is on the low side, but I think there is some other sort of problem going on here.

It is like something is blocking web pages from loading....they do eventually, but browsing is very slow. Opening IE is quick as is loading up programs etc...not indicative of a "slow computer" or running out of resources.

Once IE is open it probably takes google 30-60 seconds to actually appear......but once it is up, the search is very fast like you would expect. Going into a webpage is also very slow. It is like the initial page load is slow and then searching is normal speed.

I turned off the windows firewall, but couldn't think of anything else. I noticed that the CPU usage and RAM usage are high going above 50% at times, but I found google results of people using Win 7 on even older, slower machines.

Any idea?

A:Internet browsing very slow after brand new installation of 64bit Win7

With 2 GB of RAM you would be better off with 32 bit.

Try another DNS server. "ipconfig -flushdns" afterwards - https://www.google.com/url?q=http://...6z2aXNcEi7K-Fw
Try a clean startup, it should help with RAM/CPU - Troubleshoot Application Conflicts by Performing a Clean Startup

Hello, I have had this problem ever since the summer. I would tell you the speeds I'm getting from testmy.net, but the page is still loading. It's been over 30 minutes.

Anyway, I have installed the drivers for the motherboard that came with the disc and such, and I still have no success. It is really annoying at this point, basically not being able to use my computer.

Any advice for what I should do? I'm connected via ethernet, I will have to get my wireless adapter back from my friend to test that out.

A:Help! Slow Computer, Slow Internet. Slow, Slow, Slow!

Hi MaryJane,Sorry for the delay, this forum is really swamped right now. I don't see any positive signs of malware in your log, although there is one thing that I am unsure about. I'll get to that in a minute. Before we do rootkit scans and use some other tools to confirm that malware is not the problem, let's do a quick check of resources.Press <Ctrl>-<Alt>-<Del> to open Task Manager, then click on the Processes tab. Place a check next to Show processes from all users. Note the numbers at the bottom, CPU usage should be running at 0 to no more than five percent if your system is idle (no background tasks running). If that is not the case, scroll down and see if any of the processes is running at a high percentage of CPU usage. On a normal system at idle the System Idle Process should show about 98 percent, meaning nothing else is using the CPU. The next columns to the right, memory usage and peak memory usage, may also show something out of line if one process is using a large amount of memory. If you see anything showing high CPU usage or high Memory usage, make a note of it.Now, click the Performance tab. The key numbers here are in the Commit Charge box -- The Total and Peak figures; and in the Physical Memory box, the Total figure. Make a note of these three numbers. I would like to see them, but I can tell you what I'm looking for: basically, any time the Commit Charge exceeds the total physical memory, Windows will have to constantly swap d... Read more

Guys, can someone help me out on trying to resolve an issue I'm having on my network.

I have 3 Main PCs.

One in the Gameroom--Media Server (Windows 7 64bit, onboard Gigabit Nic). MSI AMD 780G Chipset.

One in the Office--(Windows XP MCE, INTEL Gigabit PCI)

One in the Living Room--HTPC (Windows 7 32bit, onboard Gigabit Nic) GIGABYTE AMD 780G Chipset.

I just upgraded all my systems to new hard drives in hopes of archiving all DVDs onto the server and streaming them from there to the other machines.

All connections are working fine and I can move around files between machines no problem.

My issues I can get 70-80 MB/s between the HTPC and the Server.

The most I can get out of my Office and the Server is 37-40MB/s.

The 2 OS drives in the Office and HTPC machines are Identical..Samsung F3 drives. The drives on the server I'm sending files to are Samsung F4 drives.

I just did fresh OS intalls on these drives when I placed them into service.

I used all windows drivers except for the Intel NIC in which I used the supplied drivers for it.

Can anyone tell me why my XP machine can't pull the same mustard as the other machine? It really has me puzzled.

Thanks,
Mike
