New PC purchase

Q: New PC purchase

I hope I'm in the right forum?
I 'm going to buy a new computer, $400 is my limit. "Tigerdirect" has several that looks like they would fit my needs.
Systemax Ascent KMA3500 ($399 + &19.95 shipping)
ADM Athlon 64 X2 4400+ 2.30GHz
160GB SATA 7200 HD
Memory DDR2 2GB
GeForce 6100 GPU
DVDRW
350 Watt Power Supply
Operating System: "Windows Vista Business"
Startup OS: "Windows XP Pro"
I'm leaning toward this one because most of my software is old and may not play on Vista, and I like XP it has done me no wrong. Besides I'm 84 years old and I don't want to learn any new systems.
WS Office97, Lotus 123, and others. I am not in position to replace my software with the latest editions.

The other is:
Compaq Presario SR5710Y (Refurbished) ($299 + $19.95 Shipping)
ADM Athlon X2 4450e 2.3GHz
250GB SATA 7200 HD
Memory DDR2 3GB
GeForce 6150SE
DVDRW
250 Watt Power Supply
Operating System: "Windows Home Vista Premium"
The Vista is a drawback, but this looks like a great buy.

Any suggestions , comments or pertinent information on these two machines , or others in my price range?.
Has anyone any info. on machines like the Systemax with 2 OS?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I am building a computer for my first time and after choosing a motherboard, have no idea what RAM to buy. I know that I want 8 gigs of RAM, and the motherboard has slots for 4 RAM cards, but I don't know how to figure out how many pins should be on the RAM that I buy. The motherboard that I chose is an MSI ATX DDR3 2133 Motherboard 970. I would prefer a RAM card from Corsair, but thats just personal preference, not necessity. Help anyone?

Also, in case you need more info about my motherboard, I got it at this URL: http://www.amazon.com/MSI-DDR3-Moth..._n_feature_keywords_two_browse-bin:6159420011

A:What RAM should I purchase?

As described in the motherboard description - Memory: 4x DDR3-2133(OC)/ 1866/ 1600/ 1333/ 1066 DIMM Slots, Dual Channel, Max Capacity of 32GB.

This means your motherboard takes DDR3 memory. When an OC follows a number it means that in order for you to run 2133 memory you must overclock, I.e. add more voltage to get it to function at this speed. This is something you don't have to concern yourself with.

Before we move forward why this motherboard? Here are 2 questions that will help you in the process of building a PC:

1. What do you want your system to do?
2. What is your budget?

I am considering buying/installing an SSD, probably 240gb. I currently have a very well functioning machine with a 1tb HD and all my OS and software is installed on that HD. I am using Windows 7, with all the latest updates installed. I have never used an SSD or installed one so I have some questions:
1. Is 240gb enough or would 128gb be sufficient? I believe I only want Windows 7 (likely upgrade to Windows 8 when released) on the SSD and leave my current HD alone with all my software as it is currently installed.
2. What/where can I find a step by step for installing the SSD and directing the OS to read everything else from the current HD.
3. I usually use the Hibernate feature and only completely power down every few days. Would that still be acceptable?
4. I assume I would have to purchase a new copy of the OS therefore I may wait until Windows 8 is released before making the change.
Thanks

I am thinking of purchasing xp. I have built this system of mine and most of it works most of the time but all of it never works all the time. I have a dual boot dual hard drive system. The reason for two os's is because I couldn't get everything to work in win2k pro. Now I am having video difficulties. I have a very full system. I have a modem, network card, sound card, dvd decoder card, scsi card and video card (ati all in wonder 32mb pro), cd rw, dvd,zip drive, usb hub, compact flash, It is my dream to have everything work with one operating system. I would like to be able to watch movies,tv,record cd's at 12x,download network etc. I have been thinking of getting win xp pro in hopes I will be able to use all my hardware and all my software. I don't have any old dos games. I don't even care about games to tell the truth. But I do like music and movies etc. Do you think xp will do the trick or will I just be wasting my money? ...a hardware firewall for an office network. We have about 15 computers connected through a DSL modem plugged into a switch. I was wondering what exactly "unlimited nodes" stands for on firewalls such as our old sonic wall? Will this firewall protect the amount of computers we have? http://www.zipzoomfly.com/jsp/ProductDetail.jsp?ProductCode=251800
http://www.netgear.com/Products/VPNandSSL/WiredVPNFirewallRouters/FVS124G.aspx?detail=Specifications

A:Looking to purchase...

"Unlimited nodes" means exactly that - the firewall will work with any number of hosts behind it. This is opposed to products that will work with only X amount of computers at a time.

As for which device to get.. This depends on what you want that firewall to do and how much traffic it should handle.

PS
I really doubt that you would have functional internet with lots of computers plugged into a DSL modem. Are you sure that this "DSL modem" thing does not already include a router and therefore also a firewall?

Hello all, i'm planning on purchasing a new computer for christmas from an online store that i feel is fairly reputable. i'm just not sure what type of processor to shoot for though. i currently have a 1.3 ghz Intel Celeron from gateway that i bought off my sister not too long ago. This system is fairly outdated that i know, and i am wondering if I should go with a quad or dual core intel that is 1.8ghz or am i better off with an intel celeron D 3.6ghz. from what i am hearing the dual core is (2) 1.8 ghz cores, so in essence a 2.6 ghz right? on one hand i think that the 3.6ghz would be pretty damn fast, and yet i read articles that would lead me to believe the 1.8 ghz dual core would be faster. i plan on using my computer for normal internet browsing as well as some gaming. i play some mmorpg's like guild wars and plan on getting into playing some half life and gears of war. which of these two processors would be best for a gaming system. These are the two that i am looking at here.

Intel Core 2 Duo 800 / 1066Mhz FSB
or
Intel Celeron D365 3.6ghz Lga775 533fsb

which is the best for gaming?

A:New Purchase, what to buy

two cores does NOT. i repeat. NOT mean twice the power. it simply splits the load between two processors. it makes it a hell of a lot faster even at a slower gigahertz speed.

i just want to clear that up so there are no misconceptions there. that's a key thing.

if you want game and play something like the half life series or gears of war, you're going to want a fairly hefty processor. not to mention a good graphics card.

the processors you'll want to look at are the Intel E6750 Core 2 duo, and hte Intel Q6600 quad core. you can even look up some benchmarks to show you how they perform as compared to other chips here:
http://www23.tomshardware.com/cpu_2007.html

for the rest of the system, make sure you have a quality power supply, at least 2 gigs of RAM from a good manufacturer, and a graphics chip that was very recently introduced.

in terms of power supplies, i suggest the Antec Earthwatts 500watt, the Antec NeoHE 500watt, or an Enermax Liberty power supply. those are very powerful for the price, and are certified to give at least 80% efficiency if not better. so you'll get vast amounts of power, and you'll save on your electricity bill.

for the RAM, get some from Crucial, Mushkin, Corsair, G. Skill, or OCZ technologies. those are the top brands in the business. or at least make sure it comes with it. and get at least 2 gigs worth.

for the graphics chip, i recommend at least an 8800gt or better for gaming. or if you're into ATI, go with th... Read more

I am going to get a CD re-writer for back-ups. My computer place stocks Liteon 40x12x48 with Nero Software.

Have never used a burner before and was wondering if this is an OK brand. I looked it up on the Internet and it seems quite popular. I only want it for basic stuff. I don't really want to go elsewhere as this place has looked after the computer very well since I got it.

Just thought I would check out the views of this forum.

The Lite-On is an excellent burner for the money. Lite-On has been good about their firmware updates. The 40X burner you mentioned was released without Mt Rainier support and with P-CAV recording mode. They added both Mt Rainier and true CAV recording through firmware. You donít have to know what all that means. Just go to their site and get their latest firmware and you will have the fastest 40x burner on the market.

I need to purchase a new FP Shooter and just can't seem to decide between "Battlefield 1942" and "VietCong". I've read all the reviews and as usual they leave me with no information.

I am concerned that both of these titles will be either too much or too buggy for my PC. Is there anyone out there with any experience with these titles?

My PC as a 32mb GeForce 2 video card. Which was more than enough for 'Unreal Tournament 2003', MOHAA, Red Faction II and "Delta Force: Black Hawk Down".

Since it is still a long time before 'Halo' or 'Half Life2' or 'Doom 3' will be released I need another FPS to tide me over until then. Are there any other FPS's out there that I am overlooking?

Thanks.

That's like asking us what you should get for dinner. No one else is going to be able to offer any real insight because none of us are going to be using the system. You know if you need it to be portable or not. You know if you place to upgrade the hardware down the line. You know your budget. Sorry if it comes across as me being unhelpful...it's just that this is an extremely vague question that's purely an opinion...and none of us are qualified to make that choice for you.

the new amd anthlong 64 2x dual core 3, 6000

A:what to purchase...

Get the 8800GTS 320mb (I think this was what you're referring to).

This would give you the highest performance boost IMO. Twin 7600GT just wouldn't compete, unless you overclock using LN2, and even that, its debatable.

Ok so I am in need of some new RAM, currently I have 2x2GB of DDR2 800MHz Corsair Gaming Memory totaling 4GB, but one of the RAM sticks is bad and doesn't work. And I don't want to spend $95 on a 2GB RAM stick. So I have $90 left that I had gotten on my birthday, and was wondering what is the best, highest amount of DDR2 RAM I could buy. I want a lot of DDR2 RAM, but not only do I want a lot but I want it to be good quality RAM that will last a long time, and has a fast speed like 800MHz or higher for $90 or less.

A:New RAM Purchase Help

Welcome,
Dont really have an answer to your question, but have some advice. If you are not going to replace all the ram at once, be careful with the purchase. Make sure that all the sticks are identical, especially the frequency. Many, who replace, ram, buy all that will be used at the same time.

BTW a belated happy birthday.

A:Help with new RAM purchase

The only specs for RAM that you want to be careful to match are:
DDR3
1.5v
Unbuffered
non-ECC
Although I must mention that you should not expect to see a real world noticeable increase in performance by jumping up from 1333 to 1600 (or even 1866). Running faster RAM can be important in overclocking in order to get a stable overclock.
Alternately, you could play with overclocking your current RAM to 1600 and save the money. Some 1333 sticks (but not all) can handle it.

Ok so I am looking to purchasing my first NAS and I am having trouble trying to understand what I should purchase based on my needs. Here is what I am looking for:

-HDD indicator for each drive
-Gigabit Ethernet
-Hot swappable
-Compatible with OS X and linux
-Capable of showing up as a Network drive for everyone to access

Most that I have researched involve a web interface to set up and can only be access through there such as QNAP. Any chance that there are any that don't involve the web to constantly access? I plan to have like 8TB in the nas.

Thanks in advance!

A:NAS purchase need help

I think they pretty much all use a browser to access settings, but its jut by local I.P. address, nothing Internet involved unless you're coming at it from the WAN side, then you need a NAS with web-access.

NAS drives are usually tucked out of the way and rarely looked at, better for the NAS to email you periodically about it condition. Gigabit is important but so is the underlying power of the NAS itself. Cheap NAS drives with gigabit ethernet can still be slow--usually the more expensive they are, the faster and even more robust ones have a second gigabit port as a failsafe.

Don't know about hot swappable. Mine are in RAID 1 and they'lll email me if there's a problem (hopefully).
Compatibility, some would have thier own format like RiserFS, and I think all mine are now just good old NTFS so there is no need for translation at all with Windows so I'm not sure about standardization when it comes to sharing with those three main OS flavors.
All NAS drives show up on a network once properly configured, with their own I.P. address and name...that's the N in NAS.

Hello,
Heres the story, Ill try to be brief. I bought this computer K330-77273GU on 6/1.Lenovo - IdeaCentre - Desktop PCs - K Series- K330 Had a code for 20% off so I paid $800 for it. (Feel free to comment on the computer.) Needed it fairly quick so I shopped a bit but didn't dig too deep. My bad. After I received it I found this forum and started digging. Wanted to know exactly what was inside for upgrades later and I just wanted to know.

I found out Intel recalled some motherboards back in Jan. or Feb. I believe, but was shipping new mobos with the problem corrected. I have this mobo but said to myself surly the BRAND NEW COMPUTER I BOUGHT DIRECTLY FROM LENOVOS WEB SITE must have the new mobo. I sat on this info for a while but it bugged me so I called today. Guess what, I HAVE THE OLD MOBO.

I was told by the operator that the mobo could be replaced, the computer could be replaced or I could receive a refund. He gave me another number to call when I make a decision. Haven't called yet. What a way to do business. How long will they continue to sell computers with this defective mobo?

I realize the problem is with sata ports 2-5 and I am only using 0-1 now, but really. One of the reasons I gave Lenovo a shot was the IBM name behind it. That worked out well for me.

So now after Ive slowly installed my programs and data so if I had a problem I would know the culprit, I have to start all over. Thing is I was liking the computer.

Feel free to comment on the computer... Read more

A:Lenovo purchase gone bad

As Lenovo have given you three positive outcomes you've come out on top already.

Replace the motherboard, replace the computer or a full refund? I think Lenovo have made the right call.

Asking them to send you a far more expensive one than the one you freely bought is pushing the boundaries of customer service too much I feel.

If they'd done nothing or tried to fob you off, then you would have a gripe. As it is, take what you think is best for you - you've already said you like the computer.

I am getting ready to purchase my ram, and I was wondering if it's okay to purchase a set of 6400 (800+mhz) instead of 5300 (600+mhz) ram? My computer currently has 2gb 5300 (633mhz) 200-pin but I want to upgrade to 4gb 6400. but like I said, I don't know if I should purchase the 5300 or 6400. Sorry if this makes no sense. I am so tired right now.

Hello, I'm researching the P50 but find the Lenovo configurator confusing. Basically I want 32 GB of RAM and that is no problem for the P50. I also want 1 TB of SSD storage, which Lenovo doesn't seem to offer? In the spec it reads: Up to 3 drives (two M.2 SSD and one HDD)Some:M.2 SSD / SATA 6.0Gb/s or PCIe NVMe, PCIe 3.0 x 4, 32Gb/sSome:HDD / SATA 6.0Gb/s, 2.5" wide, 7mm high, APS Does that mean that all P50 comes with one PCIe M.2 slot and one SATA 6.0GB/s slot?Or does that mean that some come with 2 PCIe slots and some others come with 2 SATA 6.0 GB/s slots? Basically I don't want to miss out on the M.2 PCIe slot.

Solved!
Go to Solution.

A:P50 questions before purchase

The P50 has two storage bays. The right storage bay may only be used for a 2.5" 7 mm HDD/SSD (SATA III). The left slot can either be used for one 2.5" 7 mm HDD/SSD (SATA III), or two 2280 M.2 SSDs (SATA III or PCIe NVMe). For the HDDs there are two cables required to connect them with the mainboard, for the M.2 SSDs there are special trays. If you want to upgrade later, you can buy them here:http://shop.lenovo.com/se/sv/itemdetails/4XB0K59917/460/7EF7D50A5A7047049A355BF42AAF3C5Chttp://shop.lenovo.com/se/sv/itemdetails/4XB0L63274/460/7EF7D50A5A7047049A355BF42AAF3C5C If you order from Lenovo directly, there is a way to get 1 TB of SSD storage: Just order two M.2 512 GB NVMe SSDs.  For this you have to select "None" for the first Hard disk drive, then for the first SSD the 512 GB NVMe and for the second SSD also the 512 GB NVMe. The SSDs Lenovo sells are all M.2

Which is better when it comes to speeds & durability?
1. Older Sandisk Cruzer 32GB
2. Newer Sandisk Cruzer Glide 32GB

I have the older Sandisk Cruzer 16GB; it's lasted me quite some time & has even been through a round in the washer (by accident of course) & a few re-formattings, but has never let me down.

Since they are both on sale this week, I may get one. Both come aquiped w/software which I don't plan on using & will remove right away. W/capacity & pricing being the same, which is better when it comes to speed & durability?

A:USB drive purchase

CJW, I really can't answer that. I have several of the older ones, that have proven to be very reliable and durable. But they also seemed to be slower than some other brands, to me. I have no experience with the newer models.

Hi all,

I'm currently looking to purchase a new PSU for my machine. I used the watt calculator here ASUSTeK Computer Inc. -Support- Recommended Power Supply Wattage Calculator and determined that I need at the least a 400 W PSU.

I realize that when it comes to PSU's it is more complicated than, "the more watts the better". Just curious what would work with my system. Here are my specs:

Computer type: Desktop

Manufacturer: Custom build

OS: Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit

CPU: AMD Phenom (tm) II X4 925 Processor

Motherboard: Asus MSO-M4N68T-MV2(B)

Memory: 4 GB

Graphics Card(s): ATI Radeon HD 5570

Hard Drives: Hitachi HDS721010CLA332

Apologies if I forgot something.

Any input would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

A:Want to purchase a new PSU. Any suggestions?

I believe in power supplies with a little more watts and 12+ amps.
If it was my computer I would select something in the 600/650 watt and 40+ amp on the 12v+
I also recommend a full modular power supply. They are a bit more money but they are worth it. These two below should give you quality but are not full modular.

If an older laptop is purchased from ebay is there a way to get a set of new quick restore cd's for the laptop?  (the laptop does not have the os) it is a 7720 with no operating system what so ever--
the laptop I believe originally had the windows 7 operating system installed?
Does a new operating system have to be purchased through dell or can the quick restore cd's be purchased through dell to bring the computer back to original defaults?

thanks
eb

A:Ebay Purchase

Hello!  You have several options with their own unique problems.  First of all you can follow the information found here to download or order recovery media.  Dell is transitioning to an ISO download format so you may be able to download the complete ISO restore media on your own.  There is also a form you can fill out to possibly acquire dvd's that have the restore programs on them.
A problem with both those solutions is you need to transfer the ownership information and put it in your name.  You can follow the information to transfer the ownership here.
Lastly you may have to acquire a copy of Windows 7.  If you can find an OEM version of Windows 7, there should be a COA sticker on the bottom of the laptop or behind the battery that has your code needed to activate it.  Then you can go to dell's support page and download the drivers on your own and install them fresh that way.

Hi Folks.

Thanks for all the previous help.

Will purchase a new External HD, and per your advice will get a WD.
Need 1 TB, or perhaps 1.5 TB.

Read all the reviews for their various models, and one can really go nuts trying to figure out
which would be the most reliable.

I don't need portability, slimness, super-small size, super speed, etc.
My sole concern, after losing what was on a Seagate, is reliability.
Am also quite happy to live with a wall wart.
Must be USB 2.0 compatible.

Reading the reviews of a bunch of their models, it seems, for all of them, that
20 -25 % of users have had problems.
Thousands that don't, but a goodly number, for all I looked at, did after a short time or right out of the box. Luck of the draw, perhaps.

So, might anyone recommend a WD model or two that they feel is a cut above the rest re reliability ?

And, please:

Should I seriously also consider Hitachi ?
Do they actually make their own, or are they repackaged WD or Seagate's ?

BTW: Are the ones with wall warts more reliable than the USB powered ones ?

Much thanks, as always,
Bob

A:Which WD External HD To Purchase ?

Western Digital bought Hitachi's hard drive business 3 or 4 years ago, but both brand names are still in use. I don't know if Hitachi is possibly semi-independent within WD and has hard drive designs that are noticeably different from WD. That's possible, but I don't know how to confirm it.

If you don't need portability, you might consider an internal rather than an external. You'd gain speed since your data would not have to negotiate the USB interface at all, you'd avoid issues related to the enclosure, and you wouldn't have any worries about a wall wart.

I have a second internal that is purely for backup purposes. I've never even owned an external. I additionally make occasional backups to a third internal in an external dock, but the second internal is my workhorse backup drive. Completely backs up about 95,000 files and rarely takes more than 70 seconds to do so.

You're never going to avoid the issue of being sickened by the number of negative reviews you see for whatever drive strikes your fancy. Try to avert your eyes. Otherwise, take into consideration that some of that is user error and that those who have a poor experience with a particular brand/model are much more likely to make a review than those who were satisfied.

I chased my tail on this issue for several months last year when I was shopping for a new second internal drive. All of it pointless although I was emotionally incapable of doing otherwise. Eventually, you have to hold your nose and take the plu... Read more

I wanted to know what poeople here thought abount online purchasing of hardware. i have done it a few times but never for a mobo or processor. What are good reliable sites not only in CS and delivery but also quality of the producst they ship?
NewEgg
Nerds.net

Just to name a few.

A:hardware purchase

I've bought a motherboard and CPU from googlegear.com, they were very good, and I also bought a mobo/CPU from newegg.com, who were also very good. I've bought tons of things off of eBay, RAM, hubs, hard drives, and other random computer parts, and all my experiences have been good with that. I've also bought some fans and LED's from www.svc.com, and from www.xoxide.com, both of which I had no problems with.

I found a vendor with i7 desktop systems (two) each with 8 GB and with Home Premium Windows 7 64-bit and the price of each is about a hundred dollars less than the most recent time I had checked. In order to do XP emulation, though, I would prefer an i7 system (desktop) which supports that (Ultimate? or Business). Also wondering about one which includes HDTV tuner as well. I am not in a hurry.

A:purchase new i7 with Ultimate Win 7

If you are going to spend the money I would go for the Ultimate edition.
As for the HDTV Tuner that would be a hardware component of the machine.

Question is where are you looking? Can you post a link to these machine so we can look and advise more.

I bought a Windows 7 Pro 32 bit program at Ebay. I installed it and had problems with the virtual machine and downloading adobe products. Now, I realize I bought a back up copy, not for resale. What should I do? Reinstall it? Get Windows anytime upgrade and try to press for Pro ultimate. Are my problems related to this copy or could it be something else. I paid $111.00 for it saving about 75 bucks. It's not like it was bargain basement. I was told it was new, but I see it was made in Puerto Rico. Can anyone shed some light?

A:Ebay purchase

If you check the listing and it does not state anywhere that it is not Retail or OEM, you can open a claim with ebay and/or paypal, as you did not receive the product you paid for.

Other than that, I would try to re-install, sometimes windows just doesn't stick to your hard drive properly
