ThinkPad X1 Yoga Gen2 does not Restart, requires hard power off. Stuck at Lenovo boot logo.

Q: ThinkPad X1 Yoga Gen2 does not Restart, requires hard power off. Stuck at Lenovo boot logo.

Two ThinkPad X1 Yoga Gen2 TabletPCs will successfully boot into Windows 10 just fine from a hard poweroff. But once in windows, if i choose Restart, it will hang at the "LENOVO" BIOS level boot up logo with "To interrupt normal startup, press Enter". Stuck at Lenovo BOOT BIOS initialization screen, right before handoff to the Operating System. "To interrupt normal startup, press Enter" At this point, pressing ENTER does not work.CTRL-ALT+DEL causes the screen to change shade for a moment, but effectively does nothing.Changing the UEFI settings to diagnostics results in black screen.Holding the power switch to force a poweroff, waiting a few moments, and then powering on results in a successful windows startup. DevMGMT.msc does NOT see bluetooth and there is "Unknown USB Device (Device Descriptor Request Failed)" entry under "Universal Serial Bus controllers". I have run all automatic updates via "Lenovo Vantage" and the manual TPM update. I can boot into the firmware setup and have had it revert to factory defaults and reverted to factory defaults for all security settings. I even tried the Win10 repair startup problems, but it says it cannot fix this.

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

It looks to me like you have a faulty hardware issue or a serious driver issue. Try the Lenovo recovery to put the device back to the factory windows install. If that fails, I would think you have a hardware issue.

My S1 Yoga, 20CD-00B1US, is stuck with the screen off and the power LED stuck on. When I try to push or hold the power button it beeps two short beeps and the LED stays solid. I was running the Lenovo Bios Update Software directly from their site. The power cord was plugged in and no other programs were running (aside from background programs). Now it is just stuck like this. Any thoughts or help would be great. I can't even get it to force shut off. Thank you in advance!

Hello, I got a new X1 Yoga in my hands. Its a nice notebook. Using the Pen makes fun and so on. But there is one problem. After reboot or shutdown/and boot the X1 stucks sometimes. I can see the Lenovo Logo, the black background and the message "to interrupt normal startup, press enter". If I press "enter" nothing happens. I can use CTRL-ALT-DEL to "reboot" to the same stuck behavior. Only the Power button helps. The designated user won't be lucky about theat problem.

I have a Lenovo Yoga 3 Pro-1370 that will power on, they keyboard lights up, but the screen only displays the Lenovo logo.  The system does not boot further or give any error message.  I can leave it on until the battery dies and it will just sit on the Lenovo logo and go no further.  None of the key combinations for going into the BIOS are responsive.  I have tried several variations of hitting the reset button on the side based on suggestions I have found on the forums.  Does anyone know what could be the issue?  Is the motherboard shot?  If so, can a replacement board be ordered?  The unit is well outside of warranty.  Thanks,Wayne

I've been looking around and found a few people who are very displeased with the logo startup/boot logo (example1, example2), but no way to change it as of yet. Is it possible without too much hassle? I know it's not a big deal but the logo is simply terrible in so many ways. If nothing, then at least I'm raising awareness and maybe Lenovo will choose a better graphic designer for our collective startup screens. I mean, seriously? Is that the best you could come up with?

I just purchased IdeaCentre K450 from Bestbuy. In addition I also purchased 2 Seagate 3TB Backup Plus USB drives. All three USB drives were plugged in to the K450.When the Windows Updates automatically rebooted the PC, it got stuck on the Lenovo BIOS logo.It will not bypass it until I remove or power down all the USB drives that attached to it. I did check the BIOS and make sure that it's not trying to boot from USB. I made the Local Hard Disk as the number 1 priority when booting. I don't know what is going on. I think Lenovo will have to update the BIOS. SInce it's a newer product, my guess is I will have to wait for a little bit. I called the support line and they have no clue what is going on. They only advise is to post it in the forum and see if anyone else has the same issue. *no comment* I guess this is a weird one because when I tested by plugging in an "EMPTY" 4GB USB jump drive, it will boot just fine.I'm not sure if it's because the Seagate Backup Plus was a 3TB drives or it has "certain" content inside the jump drive. If any fellow K450 users has the same issue, please post it here so the Lenovo "engineer" be able to see that there's an issue out there. Thank you.

Hi iamxcpx, welcome to the forums,

what you have experienced is not uncommon with any type of computer from notebook through to server, regardless of the boot disc being set as item 1 in the list, sometimes they just want to search everything available for boot instructions; depending on the quantity of information on the external discs it can sometimes take a little while.

I would suggest totally excluding the drives, or better all usb devices, from the boot order.  The following picture is of another systems BIOS, but hopefully illustrates what I mean.

Hello. I have 3 year old Lenovo Y50-70 laptop. Couple days ago i decided to finally upgrade to SSD. The old HDD was 1TB WD 10SPCX and i replaced it with 480GB Kingston UV500 SSD. When I swapped the drives and tried to boot, I was stuck on completely black screen with only Lenovo logo. This ocured when I tried to enter Novo menu using Lenovo Novo button as well. I tried to put back the old HDD and it was working normally. When i pulled out both disks and tried to boot only from bootable USB this problem did not occur. Then i tried to plug the SSD to some HP desktop computer and I was able to install windows there and boot on the desktop normally. So I put the SSD back into my laptop and again i was stuck on the logo. However, because Windows was now installed, I was able to boot after being stuck on the Lenovo logo for some time. Then I tried to change the SATA controller mode. I tried both Compatible (IDE) and AHCI modes and installed fresh windows using both settings but still I was stuck on the cursed Lenovo logo. The lag lasted ~1 minute when usind the IDE and 6-7 minutes using AHCI setting.  My bios version is the same as the version available for donwload on my laptop drivers page (V3.03). Using bios options to restore to defaults or OS optimized defaults did not make any difference. All the drivers are installed and up to date, though I think this is irrelevant as the problem first occured before any OS was present.  Could it be t... Read more

My Yoga 14 ( Type 20FY) cannot boot anymore.  It was fine in the morning, but refused to boot afternoon after being shipped around on a luggage cart.  Now it only lights up the keyboard after power on, and then does nothing, no Lenovo logo, no beep to signal any error. I had tried the following methods to no avail, draining out onboard battery, pushing the emergency reset hole, disconnecting onboard battery and CMOS battery.  Every time it failed to boot after reconnecting it with AC power.  I also connected it with external monitor over hdmi, but nothing to show up after boot it up. The machine is configured with multi-boot to several Linux flavors and Windows 10, so I am knowledgeable to be quite sure it is not a software problem.  Please help me!

Hi Everyone! I have a Thinkpad Yoga 12 and recently I am experiencing a rather serious problem with the machine. If I have a drive in it, it will simply not start the booting process and will freeze on the "press enter to interrupt..." screen. Whenever I remove the disk (SSD) the computer starts and I can access BIOS/Diagnostics/Etc. but when reinserting the SSD everything stops and the computer freezes on start. This problem is very annoying because without a proper boot I cannot update the BIOS or do anything with it at all. Did anyone else experience something similiar?I checked the SSD in a different computer and it works without a problem.

A:Thinkpad Yoga stuck on boot screen

Hanging on startup with a disk inserted would most likely indicate either a bad SSD or a bad SATA control circuit (motherboard).  If the disk is OK, that leaves only one part.

I just purchased a X1 Yoga 2nd Gen with a high-end configuration.  In theory, this is my ideal computer for home (which includes a lot of computer modeling work in evenings and weekends).

But I just returned it because I was experiencing a cascade of mostly mouse-related issues.  At times, these issues all affected the TrackPoint, TouchPad an X1 external travel mouse, so they were not device-specific.

I first noticed the mouse would freeze, and display a tiny scroll-bar pointer.  When I'd try to move the mouse, the scroll bar gliff would shift from vertical to horizontal, etc... but the mouse would not move and could not be used.  I would have to force a reboot and repeat until the problem went away.  I seemed to minimize this problem by changing a mouse setting in Devices / Mouse Properties / Thinkpad.  Under Enable TrackPoint, I changed the Middle Button Action to "Use as middle click".  This seemed to improve things...

But then the mouse started rapidly drifting across the screen, and this drifting process would go on and on until I rebooted (often several times).  When the mouse was drifting -- always towards the upper-right -- it was essentially impossible to use the computer.

I also found that the mouse buttons would quit working frequently.  This was most common when I had other processes running.  But the CPU (and memory) was far from maxed out -- I had it at 30-40%.  This pro... Read more

I would need to see it to be sure, but my guess is that the hard disk was logically damaged.  That means the boot record or partition information was wiped out.  It could also be a disk hardware error.  Do you have a backup?

Just a guess, but I think your boot SSD is slow to respond to a power-up command.  I would try turning off fast startup (control panel/power/change what power buttons do)  I don't think it's likely to work, but it's free and easy.  If you can borrow another drive, try that.

Like stated in the description. the Lenovo Yoga Control Service require 3% out of the CPU, all the time. and the only thing the service does is checking the orientation of the screen, and disable keyboard and mouse when flipped. This is absurd, especially since it drains battery constantly. I hope that this will be fixed eventually, until that time, I will turn the service off and use the computer like a regular laptop.

Hello. I'm having a substandard issue with my Lenovo Yoga Laptop that I will try to explain in complete detail. First I'll summarize what's going on, then I'll list all  the details that could be related to this problem, no matter how small, in order of most likely related to least likely related. I'm an IT technician so I have some grasp of computer troubleshooting, just keep in mind. Alright, so the issue is that my Lenovo ThinkPad Yoga (can't find exact model, label only days Yoga and its dated in 2013) will not boot into Windows 10 after I have done an upgrade from Windows 8.1 using Microsoft's media creation tool. More specifically, I was able to do the firat time setup and boot on once but after searching for Windows updates and restarting, the computer will not boot on. The most likely reason for this I believe is that the laptop doesn't recognize the SSD with Windows 10 on it. It can detect it in some ways but not others. In Lenovo diagnostics I'm not able to run a storage test, which is an option I know is usually there because I've troubleshooted these before, which leads me to believe it doesn't recognize it. However, boot menu and BIOS recognize the drive. Attempting to boot to it from boot menu gives a long black screen and then it takes me back to boot menu. Letting my computer boot up normally also gives a long black screen after the ThinkPad logo and the automatically goes to boot menu. The other diagnostics for Lenovo hardware all pass. So some... Hi,

I tried to install a wireless router last weekend and have subsequently caused a fault on my PC, which now continually restarts when it reaches the XP logo screen.

Not knowing what to do, I Initially I tried installing XP again on a different partition, the E drive.

[For info, my hard drive is divided into three partitions - C, D & E].

This E drive copy of XP boots and loads ok, and allows me to access my photos and files, but obviously none of the programs on the C drive original XP installation will load from E.

Having managed to obtain an XP boot disk I then tried using the Windows XP Recovery Console and have successfully run 'fixboot' and 'fixmbr' at the faulty C drive, but the problem still remains.

I'd be extremely grateful for any help fixing this problem.. my PC spec is as follows:

Maxdata Intel PentiumD Dual Core
Intel Pentium D 945 3,40GHz
1024MB DDR2 533 Memory
250GB SATA II Hard Drive 7200RPM
Windows XP Home Edition installed (SP2)

Thanks in advance for any assistance,

Mike

I have a ThinkPad Yoga (Type 20CD) that recently began experiencing a major issue. I was using as usual when it gave me the windows 10 blue screen and told me it was restarting. Upon restarting, it was only able to launch to the boot manager, and when I tried to start normally, it noted that my Hard Drive was not found. I figured it was a seating issue, as I've had those before with the cables for the trackpad, so I opened the bottom and reseated the drive. After doing so, the computer will not power back on. When I press the power button, the ThinkPad logo light comes on for around 3-4 seconds, but then dies. No other sound is made, the fans do not come on, and nothing is displayed on screen. I have tried several suggested fixes (holding the power button for 30 seconds while disconnected from AC power, pressing the emergency reset button, etc) but to no avail. Since this is my primary computer for work and school, I am really looking to get this fixed asap, so any solutions I can do myself would be appreciated.
