Flicking taskbar tabs / Cannot press Back

Q: Flicking taskbar tabs / Cannot press Back

Dear all,

I just recently installed Windows 7 Home Premium x64 and my relevant drivers for Dell.
All was working fine until these problems occured.

1) At the taskbar, if there are more than one tab (for instance Windows folder) we can usually click it and select the tab we wish to go to. But for my case, the "Tab Screen" simply disappears after I click it once, so I can't choose the folder I wish to go.

2) For any browsers (windows browser, chrome, internet explorer, more) whenever I press the back button it simply reverts back to the page I was at (sort of like someone pressed forward the moment I press back).

Hope to receive help.
If any specifications are needed it'd be much appreciated if you can tell me how to give you guys the logs.

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

I have XP and use IE8 and regularly clear all temporary files/cookies/cache.

When browsing the internet, if I want to use the back feature I have to hit the back button multiple times. Sometimes it works like it should, but other times I have to press the back button two or three times to get it actually do what it is supposed to do. This has been going on for months and it can be really annoying. This is very frustrating for me because I cannot figure it out on my own..

I have reset IE, deleted all unnecessary junk files, I even went as far as reformatting and starting from scratch and nothing seems to work.

Does anyone know what it going on here?

A:Why do I have to press the back button multiple times to go back?

Have you tried using other browsers instead while searching for the solution? While this may solve your issue at hand, have you tried disabling certain IE addon or toolbars to check on the difference?

Hi all. =)

Recently, every time I use the computer the taskbar will suddenly start to change from normal style to classic style and back and forth and finally looks very messed up (see screenshot). This will also happen to the row of tabs in Internet Explorer 7, and sometimes the scrollbar as well. However, if I open a new window only the problem with the taskbar remains in that window. I'm not really sure what happened so sorry if my description seems limited and confusing. Please see the screenshot - especially the taskbar, scrollbar and row of tabs in the picture. Please tell me what's wrong and how I can fix it.

Thank you!

Is it possible to drag taskbar tabs?

Sometimes I have several windows open
And it would make my life sooo much better if I could simply drag the taskbar tabs and order them how I want

i.e. similarly the way you can reorder the tabs on most browsers

Is there anyway of doing this?

Yes there is. It was a program featured on a Tekzilla daily I think. I'll see if I can find it if no one else knows the name of it off-hand.

Anyone else have this? Every few minutes when my computer is idle, a blank tab opens on the taskbar with either the windows explorer file/folder icon, or the blank application icon where it looks like a business card or something. No words, just the icon and the screen space.

Anyone else have this or is this a known problem or what?

hello- thanks in advance for your help.

so, i'm new to the combining windows on my taskbar.
but i guess i kinda like it.

however, i don't want internet explorer to show me overlapping windows when i have multiple tabs. that way, i cannot just open IE by one-clicking the icon on the taskbar. i'll always have to choose what tab to open, before really opening the IE window.

it makes sense to combine 2 or 3 seperately opened IE's, but not combing all tabs in IE. i.e google's chrome browser does exactly what i want, however i use both browser.

hope its clear enough

I have always wondered why Microsoft never implemented this feature in the first place. Back when I had Windows XP and Vista, I used a program called taskix to reorder tabs on the taskbar.

Now I have Windows 7. I have set the taskbar not to combine all like tabs under one icon. For instance, when I open several windows of google chrome, each window pops out as a seperate tab.

When I try to move a google chrome tab around, Windows 7 automatically moves the entire tab group around my other pinned programs. For instance, say I have four google chrome tabs open and I want to move chrome tab number 2 up one. When I try to do this, windows 7 moves all four chrome tabs around.

How can I move windows 7 tabs around individually?

Hello, It has been about a week now and I have yet to solve a little problem with my taskbar.
I've tried quite a few things to get tabs on the taskbar to show up when I open a folder or window, but all effort was in vain.

Problem: Nothing shows up on task bar when a folder/app/window is open. Only the Quicklaunch icons are there.

e.g. Open firefox, nothing shows up on taskbar (I can right click taskbar choose different options etc - so it's not frozen) Opening Task manager shows firefox running on both the processes and application tab. So I can switch around that way. Alt+Tab also temporarily shows firefox and any other program/folder/window that is open as well. Minimizing the window causes it to disappear, so it looks like you haven't opened anything at all -but checking task manager shows the programs opened! Yet nothing shows up on the taskbar. I'm trying to re-arrange the order of tabs in taskbar but those that are similar, move together in groups.
Let me explain with an example:
I want to place the Firefox tab between 2 explorer tabs but windows won't let me

I start draging Firefox to the left:
And Windows automatically moves Firefox tab past the 2 explorer tabs

I want to place the Firefox tab between those 2 tabs.
And a similar problem happens if I want to switch the order of those 2 explorer tabs: Windows won't let me place "Program Files (x86)" before "Program Files". If I try to drag one, both of them move at the same time in a group.

Is there a way to disable this "grouping" of tabs?

I have about a dozen Firefox tabs open on my taskbar at the bottom of the screen. Win7 64bit on Dell E6510. But some of them will shift position on the taskbar on their own. Happens all the time, and it's very aggravating because I'm needing to be able to hit them quickly and often and need to have them stay in the expected position. Can't afford the time to hunt around for them. For example finance.yahoo.com will often move itself to the far right. Even BigCharts.com is doing this now. None of my searches on the web can answer how to stop this. It's easy to grab/drag a tab window for another application around on the taskbar, but within the single application of Firefox this doesn't work. Why/how are these windows shifting around? This never happens on my other laptop, a WinXP SP3 machine. Thanks for your suggestions!

A:taskbar tabs for my many firefox windows shift

If you don't mind me asking, and not trying to insult you, but why have you chosen to have a dozen single instances of Firefox open rather than using the tab feature built into Firefox. I typically have anywhere between 3 and 15 tabs open in Firefox but only one icon down in my taskbar.

I think that if you try it that way it will solve your issue of them moving around since there will only be one instance of Firefox open and you can quickly identify which tab is which page by looking at the heading.

Additionally Firefox offers the ability to move the tabs around so you can easily organize the most important ones.

to open a new tab in Firefox click the plus sign, also called the "New Tab" button, located at the end of the row of tabs on the top, far-right side of your browser window. A new tab appears.

Hope this helps and hopefully this can make things a little bit easier for you.

Good Luck

For the last month I have this little space which is nicely tapered at the left and right edges, but reduces the viewing area of the browser and is a bit disturbing. Any ideas? (This is Firefox 3.6.8)

There seems to be a drawing in there of the top third of a battery, not sure!

It's near the top, just below the address bar and above the browser tabs.
Here's a screenshot:

A:[SOLVED] Weird Space between top taskbar and tabs

Go to Menu > View > Toolbars and remove the checkmark if there's a new toolbar that you don't recognize listed there.

If that doesn't work, right-click a blank area in the toolbar at the top of the screen and select 'Customize', then see if you can drag the battery image into the Customize Toolbar window to make it disappear.

It might indicate a missing plugin, so go to https://www.mozilla.com/en-US/plugincheck which will tell you if any plugins need to be installed or updated.

Okay my story goes like this... One guy had a 'most wanted'(nfs who dont know) cd, and i thought i would install it just for fun, inserted cd, and found out that my HDD is running low, so i plugged external HDD in, and installed from cd to this external HDD, played 1 race, and quitted the game, and removed the external HDD. So after a while, i started recognizing that all my games keep (swear word) alt tabbing in-game to desktop, after like every 3minutes or something. First of all i ignored it for a while, and after a while i started to get really (swear word), and I started thiniking (swear word) caused this (swear word). I started thinking back what i had done/changed in my pc. I saw a icon flashing at my taskbar, so i recorded it, first the icon, then the task manager, and found out it is UI0detect.exe, and after i found out what is this 'program' all about, i got really (swear word) at myself, because it was obviously because of this need for speed install to this external HDD.... so basically this exe file pops up for 0.1 sec and dissapears, and alt-tabs all my games, after every 3 minutes or smth.. I've wasted already so many (swear word) hours at this (swear word), tried some dll repairs and malwarebytes ( before i actually knew what the problem was), but if anyone has any ideas, i really appericate them, thanks................ I also uninstalled the nfsmw correctly, but it didnt help.

I use excel a lot and I often have 2-4 excel workbooks open at a time, the problem is when choosing a tab from the taskbar they all say Microsoft Excel non commercial use - (Book name) which means all I see on the tabs is...

Microsoft Excel non...

I have to hover over them to see which workbook is what.

Not a major issue granted but it would be so much better if it only displayed the file/book name so I could quickly see which book is which.

Can this be done? If so how?

I saw that when I have more tabs opened in my browser and I switch to other program, come back to browser isn't possible with taskbar icon click - tabs menu is opening all the time. Little trick to avoid that is right click on taskbar -> properties and switch 'taskbar buttons' to any other option, but then the buttons are few times bigger (labels are turning on) and this is not 100% solution

Is it possible to reach the click=open effect without turning on labels? I can view/chose tabs by mouse hovering button on taskbar i don't want mouseclicking doing it.

At random times throughout the day, it seems my windows will try to alt-tab back to the desktop.

E.G. I have a full screen application running. Suddenly i find myself staring at my desktop without pressing alt-tab. Or if i have my browser window up, i will be staring at my browser window instead.

Seems to happen every few hours, doesnt matter what kind of applications i have running...it even happens when i have NO full screen applications running...if i only have my browser open, what happens is that i will notice the browser window gets unselected (open your browser window, click on the windows taskbar, browser gets unselected, just like that).

Its really very annoying. There are no pop ups or anything, and i am fairly sure i do not have anything installed that could be doing this....scanned for adware and virus using spybot search and destroy, malware anti-bytes and ESET smart security 5, nothing....restarting PC does nothing...

Mozilla occasionally forgets the last page that I was on when browsing or get it in the wrong order, so when I press the back button it either does nothing (and I have to navigate to the previous page from scratch) or it jumps back 2 pages and in some cases is unable to find the one in the middle (as if I never visited it). It does this every time it sends me forward to the wrong page (sending me to a different link to the one I clicked).

I?m currently using Mozilla 3.6.15 (though I doubt the version has anything to do with it as it didn?t do this on my other PC with the same version).
The difference now is that I?m using Windows 7 Ultimate x64 and before I was using XP SP3 on a different machine.
I cannot find any similar problem elsewhere online and although I?ll try reinstalling, I have little hope as I?ve used mozilla for several years and never had a problem like this.

Using FF 5.0. Like the system restore where I can get all of my tabs back, but sometimes it doesn't work. It happened this morning, where I just got a blank screen. History / Restore Previous Session is greyed out. Attached is the screen I unfortunately get if I try to do a System Restore.

I did a search for all "sessionstore" files and copied them to a working directory on my desktop, a screen capture of this is attached as well. I had to rename a couple of the files so that one didn't overwrite the other.

Not sure if I'll need a text editor as shown here <Extracting open URLs from sessionstore.js>...

but the instructions seemed a bit complicated. Towards the end of this thread, it wrote about opening sessionstore in mozilla FF as a standard html file or using something called a parser. I have no idea what a Bookmarklet is.

This blows me away <page 4 of Extracting open URLs from sessionstore.js>...

As well as this using a Command Prompt <Extract all urls from last firefox sessionstore used in a portable way>...

My command prompt doesn't recognize sed, perl, or grep. This also, I can't follow...

I apologize for the inconvenience caused to you. You can follow the steps below:
Drain the residual power of your computer and recaliberate the battery by following the steps below:

Power off your computer.
Remove all the external peripherals  (printers, scanners or any other USB device) connected to your computer.
Please remove the AC adapter and battery of your computer.
Press and hold the power button of your computer for 10-15 seconds to drain the residual power.

I click on my login, type in my password, wait a bit, get on the desktop, Everest now asks me to confirm startup (it didn't used to ask me that since I have it on a scheduler task), after that, I get a little glimpse of the taskbar and all of a sudden, it dissapears from the screen.

I have to do a hard reboot for it to come back. This happens sporadically (sp?) but it is starting to be worry me and I have no idea what it can be. This has started occurring more and more and started a couple of months ago.

Drivers are all up to date (Beginning of April. I usually check once a month).

Have found a few work-arounds on Goggle that I will try tonight when I get home but I wanted to see if others are suffering from this particular problem as the ones I found on Google are similar but not the same as mine.

Hi astalavista, did you try disabling all startup items and services in msconfig to diagnose this problem?

Hi there.

The icon which controls volume which used to be on the lower left corner of my taskbar has disappeared.

When I go into "Customise" then "Turn system icons on and off", I am unable to turn the "Volume" to "On".

Any ideas?

Sorry if this problem sounds really trivial, just an annoyance.

Many thanks

Hey, a few months ago my PC was being especially slow so I disabled almost all non-essential processes. This included me disabling lots of visual effects for my PC. I made it so my taskbar is that boring, blocky grey wth no shadowing on icons and all that kind of thing. All of that really made no difference... I've managed to speed up my PC some by other methods so I'd like to change it back to the nice blue curvy taskbar, along with better looking desktop icons and everything else I used to have. I basically would like to ask how to do that

P.S. While I'm posting here, any recommendations for speeding up my PC (not simple things like defrag etc.)? I'd like to just buy a new PC or upgrade parts but I really can't afford that at the moment

P.P.S More importantly, I am running on XP SP2

Thanks all.

Ok so, this is my work computer and I did the upgrade to windows 10 and my first reaction was to go thru and get rid of all these apps and things I don't need on a work computer. Well, Cortana was one of the first things to go. Big mistake. I realized later that Cortana was the only way to search my computer for files. I had removed her search box, and the little O icon on my taskbar. The only place she remains is in the start menu.

I have been googling for 2 days now trying to figure out how to put that dang search box BACK ONTO MY TASKBAR! I cannot right click the taskbar and select Cortana and choose to hide or place on taskbar or anything of that nature like all the articles I keep reading, because I removed her completely.

See?? Not there, no Cortana mentioned at all.

I cannot drag Cortana out of the start menu and pin it back on the taskbar, it simply will not let me.

Nowhere in the settings can I find the option to put Cortana back as a search bar on my taskbar. Or to just put her back on the taskbar as the O icon. I used the search feature from my start menu in Windows 7 daily. Yes, I can open the start menu and click on cortana, then click on the search box and type my inquiry, but 9 times out of 10 I am on the phone with someone spouting off information that needs to be accessed quickly and eliminating the few extra clicks it takes to access Cortana like I am currently, would make me so very happy.

Can anyone help me with this?! Pretty pretty pl... Read more

Now each time I have to switch from email to browser, I have to click several times on their vertical up/down arrows. This isn't working for me.

Anyone help please? Thanks so very much!!! Adela

Good Day
I have a View Sonic G90f 19in monitor and is about 8 or 9 yeasrs old.
I have a Nvidia 8800GTS that is about 2 years old.
Lately I have been having problems with the monitor turning Off and then back On some times once in a while and sometime continuously.really no pattern to when it flicks on and off.
The Drivers are up to date for the V card.
I checked all the connections and everythings seems OK but still problem exist.
Settings are at 1280 x 1024 75 HTz 32 bit color.
I will open the cover and jiggle the V card but not sure if this would do anything.
Has anyone experienced anything like this?

A:Monitor flicking On and Off

If the problem only started recently and the monitor is 9 years old, it's likely it's dying. The only to know for sure is to swap in another monitor and see if it does the same thing.
