Motherboard fan making strange noise

Q: Motherboard fan making strange noise

So this is the first time (for about the past week) that I've heard my mobo's fan making a pretty noticable noise. Upon inspection it seems like the fan is spinning, slowing down, speeding up, slowing down..etc... Not sure what to do (and whether or not to start panicing).

The system is a Gigabye GA-7VAX with the KT400 chipset. The fan is directly on the chipset so I definately don't want this baby to die. Any ideas?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I've had this computer since March and I'm using the stock heat sink it came with. Recently I've noticed that sometimes programs will be unresponsive for 4-6 seconds and then it will go back to normal. The same thing can be said about the mouse, sometimes it doesn't even move. I took apart the side panel of my case and noticed that the CPU fan was making the noise. It sounds like a dial up modem, but a lot more silent. This noise can only be heard up close and eventually it goes away before starting to make the noise again. My CPU temps are normal, 31 on idle and usally 45-50 when I'm playing a game. The stock fan never stops spinning either. Maybe the motherboard has something to do with this? I haven't changed anything or added any new hardware since putting it together in March nor have I replaced the thermal paste because the temps were always low to begin with.

Hey guys, this is my first post here so if this is in the wrong place, then forgive me, I checked around and this seems like the best place for this kinda prob.

Ok the problem is that my fan on my graphics card (Radeon 9600XT) has started making a weird and very annoying buzzing/whirling sound.

It all started after I did my monthly clean up inside my system. Getting rid of all the grime and stuff and checking to see if everythings just all right.

Well i plugged everything back together and a strange whirling sound started coming from my system. It's hard to describe really, it's kinda intermitent. It comes on for 5/6 seconds then theres a pause, then it's on again for another 5/6 secs etc. It doesn't seem to be related to any sort of activity the computer is engaged in, ie it makes the same kinda noise when just sat there on desktop as it does when Im downloading stuff, browsing the net or playing games.

I took the back off my case to see what it might have been and found out it was my graphics card, because when i held my card the pitch of the buzzing would lower a bit, so I took the top of my fan off my g-card and cave it a good clean out because i thought maybe there was something stuck in the fan that was making the noise. The fan is now totally crap-free but it's still making the noise.

Grrrrrrr

If anyone has any suggestions please help It' so very annoying and starting to give me headache. Oh and if I've left out ne information ... Read more

Hello this is my first time here and i hope i am posting in the right section. I checked the search option but couldnt find the same problem as mine.
So lets start i spent last night(about 12h) rendering images on my pc(which is less than 2 years old)
so after it was done evrything functioned nicely and i didn't notice any problems when i turned it off.
After around 3-4h i turned the PC on again and it started making some strange noice like crawling or whirling or something not sure how to describe it correctly. So i opened the PC and while it was all running and making the noise i used a screwdriver to block all of the fans for like a sec just to see if it is them (i read that from some other forum suggestion).
So anyway when i stoped the PSU fan the sound stoped and when i released it did not start immidiately. The sound does not start as soon as i start the PC it takes some time for it. Also the fan seems to slow down when it happens. Now i left it on like 10mins with the fan making the noise and slowing down and after like 5-10min the noise stoped and the fan started turning fast again. It has been several hours on since than and it is working normaly, i read that the problem could be dust/a wire out of place/a insect flying in etc. My concern is what i should do, is it the PSU failing or just the fan or maybe something else?

Hey everyone.. New here have a critical question!

I was in the middle of playing some game about 20 minutes ago and my harddrive started making a strange buzzing/humming sound. To confirm it was my harddrive I unplugged it, and turned the computer on. The noise was gone when I did so. So I have it back in and everything and it "seems" everything is running a lot slower. Things are locking up, ect.

I'm wondering if anyone could give me an idea of what this problem is, and how long my HD might have left in it. I'll be monitering this thread so I'll try to reply fast.. Don't want my HD to die before I find an answer.

I am new on here and still figuring out how to navigate the forums, so I apologize if I'm posting a question that has already been asked (also english is not my first language so bare with me haha). I can't find any article/forum that explains my problem so I am posting here hoping to finally finding out what is causing this sound and how to fix it.

The sound happens almost always when I access my second HDD in windows explorer. Sometimes it happens when my PC is working harder than usual (HD streaming for example) and sometimes (not so often) seemingly random or when I am not even using my PC. It is hard to explain but it is a quick high pitched spinning sound followed by what I can only explain as a clicking sound. It is very quick only about 2 seconds I would say. Previously while playing The Sims 4 the same sound happened right before the game always froze/crashed.

I only know a few things here and there about hardware components, just the basics... I have read somewhere about hard drives "spinning down". Does this mean the drive temporarily shuts down and starts back up when you access a file from it? Or what does it mean? Could this be what is the problem? Or is it something else? I don't want to take my PC in if it is a problem I can fix myself, I am pretty good at following instructions to troubleshoot. I have already run tests on both of my hard drives with a program that checks the health of your hard drive and both my disks are still in e... Read more

My PC runs Windows 7 x64 and is basically an Asus H97I+ M/b, I7-4790K CPU & GTX970 GPU. There are two SSDs for hard drives...

Whenever I am running MS Flight Simulator, I get a strange, high-pitched 'chirping' noise from what should be a silent PC, fans apart. After Googling I kind of decided it was coil whine from the GPU:

GeForce GTX 970 Coil Whine Concerns | PC Perspective

but having opened up the case and listened more closely (literally) the noise seems to be coming more from the CPU. If so, what could it be? Pretty sure it's not mechanical (i.e. fans).

Oddly, as I say, I don't get the noise other than when I run MS Flight Simulator (I don't use this particular PC for much else). I tried stress testing the CPU with Intel Burn and the GPU with this:

https://unigine.com/products/benchmarks/valley/

..also copied large files from one SSD to another. None of which caused any noise at all. It's only when running FS9 (haven't tried FSX). Makes no sense to me. Recording of the noise is here:

My computer running windows xp 64bit has been freezing. When it freezes it plays the last half second of sound played over and over very quickly, sounds like a machine gun. It happens both when gaming and doing nothing. Usually it unfreezes after a few minutes, only to freeze again. After roughly 30-40 minutes of this, the freezing usually stops.

Sometimes it does not unfreeze, and I have to hardboot. Windows will freeze when booting several times, safemode freezes after loading SPTD.sys, even after hitting escape to cancel loading.

AVG free, Avast, Clamwin, and clamtk (scanning my windows partition from linux) all pick up no viruses.

This happens with both windows xp home, windows xp pro 32bit, and windows xp 64bit. Linux does not seem to have any problems.

I've tried updating all my drivers, fresh installs, everything I can think of.

Anyone have any ideas?

A:[SOLVED] Strange Freezing - Sound making machine gun noise

No, it isn't a virus. It could be (1) temperature or (2) voltage—among other things.

Do be sure to check your temperatures in the BIOS in any case, because you want to be sure you're okay there. If the temperature is 30? C or anything like that, you've ruled that out. It's in the BIOS under Health, and look at the CPU and the System temps.

If your voltage is, say, 0.1 too low for your needs, you could have trouble. Overclockers can often help "ordinary guys" tweak their voltage settings the way that is exactly right for your RAM.

Then there is the possibility that a drive is not doing things just right. It would not have to be the drive you are using. For example, a CD-RW that works just fine might nonetheless have an operational problem that upsets the system, especially if it were on the same cable as the hard drive. You might never to think of looking for a drive that isn't in use at the time. Therefore some people would try subtracting all the hardware you are not using, piece by piece, to see if it goes away.

There is also the question whether it happens in Safe Mode. If your drivers are okay, I would guess it DOES happen in Safe Mode. But because Safe Mode installs just what you really need, it can sometimes suggest a solution in a backwards-thinking kind of way.

Finally, you mention quite a few anti-virus/firewall programs there. You are running just ONE firewall and you are running just ONE anti-virus program, right? If you are running more than ... Read more

I watched this video and copied all the settings down to try to overclock to 4.0 Ghz since I'm very new to this but heard it's very easy to do. However after saving the setup, a high pitched noise started to come from my motherboard/cpu. So, I went back to undo the voltage boost and core clock boost to see if that was the issue but the noise was still there, so I reset to the default settings and it stopped. What thing did I disable initially that started making the noise?

My 2 month old computer is sadly annoying me. The noise of it!! Its not greatly loud, but enough to ennoy me especially since I listen to so much music on my pc.
I have 6 fans, 2 on the psu which i think are quiet, as small one on the motherboard which Im guessing is silent, one on my graphics card which i think it pretty quiet too. Then theres the cpu one which obviously makes some noise but I've turned on 'quiet fan' so its only running at about 1200rpm. This leaves a huge big fan at the back and I think it could be this. I've felt the back and theres a huge suction of air. I want to know if this is likely to be the fan making most of the noise and whether you'd recommend replacing it and what with.
It doesnt help that theres a vent in the front and 2 side vents either but they must be there for a reason.
Note, I also have a fan on the side panel which isnt plugged in since i dont need it.
So any help would be appreciated, thanks guys!

A:Which fan is making the noise??

Yah, it can be hard sometimes to tell which one is the bad guy.

In general though, it is the smaller fans that are the noisy ones. Luckily, once you find which one it is, you can replace it. There are many excellent (quiet) fans on the market these days.

What motherboard to you have? I think the loudest fan on my computer is the chipset fan. I have the A8N-SLI deluxe, followed by my CPU (stock AMD) fan. My 12 inch case fans are SUPER quiet.

Hello, I have a Scorpio Series case and the side fan (fan that lights up orange and red, some other models light up blue) is making some small noise. This noise is a very low electrical noise that you might here if you were near some huge electric phone wires (outside). It is not consistently making noise, it just comes on and off. I was wondering if there is any way i can turn off this fan, or is there any other way to deal with this problem... I am not so sure if this is a big deal, but it just doesn't sound right. I have 4 other case fans, power supply fan, cpu heatsink along with a minifan on my video card, so turning off this fan i dont think would cause any major problems with my cooling.

You can turn off the fan by opening the side panel and disconnecting it.

However, a better idea would be to simply replace the fan. They don`t cost very much, typically just a few dollars.

I have an AMD Phenom II x4 955 cpu with the factory mounted fan on top. Have noticed lately that a pronounced noise (squeal) from the fan when viewing various sites with my browser. The fan speed adjusts with the content as expected. Now it is running @ 3900 rpm while typing this, but if I select a video to watch, it will climb to around 5600-6000 rpm. That is when it is making the squeal. I am thinking the bearings are dry or have become worn. Question is, has anybody changed their cpu fan with this type processor. I hope to remove the fan and replace without taking the cpu out of its socket. Attached picture of cpu/fan, camera shot "stopped" or made it appear that it was stopped. I used Speccy to monitor the fan speed, although the readings seem very high? Tx

Replace the fan if possible, but I would just buy an entire new cooler.

When you remove it use a twisting clockwise counter clockwise motion to break it loose from the thermal paste before you pull up, this should keep the cpu in the socket.

Please, be careful

Since last night my computer has been making this really weird sound. Kind of like a revving sound. I'm not sure what it is. I have an eMachines computer and this has never happened to me before. Anyone had this experience before and may know whats up with it?

On a side note: I saw the stickied topic about eMachines PSU's, and yes I think I need a new one. My computer crashes (often), and some mild things, and some people and forums have told me to get a new PSU, so anyone know a good PSU brand to get? The PCs at the school do the revving thing but then stop 10 seconds later.

On the side note a good company PSU would be OCZ, Antec, Thermaltake, and Enermax. Those should do good. Make sure you get them from newegg.com. They are the best site to buy things from.

Hi, when I bought my PC two years ago, it was silent, it barely made any noise. However, I later made a huge mistake. I opened the case to clean the inside of the computer with an air compressor, but while I was cleaning the fans I wasn't holding them so the air compressor made them spin faster than normal. Following that, every time I boot my PC now, it makes a loud noise and also the PC makes a lot of noise in general. A lot more than when I bought it, to a point where sleeping next to it when it is turned on is a hard thing to do. Now, I'm wondering if that mistake is the cause of the noise. When I look at the fans, they don't seem to be damaged at all. I have 3 fans: The case fan, the graphics card fan and the power supply fan. My PC is cleaned regularly so I know it's not dust or anything that's causing the problem.

Here's some interesting info: It only makes noise when it's booting after the computer has been turned off for more than 30 minutes. If it's less than that, it doesn't make the loud noise. I have no idea why. Also, about 3% of the time, the desktop doesn't get to fully load because the computer freezes. It's a problem that started at the same time the noise started. If it is indeed one or multiple fans that are broken, how can I know which one(s) is?

I made a video of when I'm booting the computer so you can hear and see what is happening.

You didn't tell us the brand and model of the computer.
Using an air compressor is very bad, because you risk the damage of static electricity that is generated in amazing amounts. Next time, us canned air designed for use in cleaning computers.
Replace the CPU fan, us buy a new CPU cleaning kit, and any fans that blow air to the outside, and replace the power supply with one of decent quality. Clean the dust of fan blades and computer walls with a soft rag soaked in denatured alcohol. Get some nylon or plastic ties to hold the cables together and away from any fans. Tie down SATA and EIDE cables so they cannot block air or rattle. Make sure all air flow passages are free and allow full movement of cooling air. All these will likely return your computer to normal. You could also buy "silent" cooling fans for very little money which would reduce your noise even more..
Use canned air to get

Ok here it goes, I think something is going out in my computer. I think that it is either the hard drive or power supply. For about the last week every once in awhile the computer will make a noise like its not getting any power then power again. The best way to describe what is happening is to think of a big main frame computer and when you turn it on you can hear the energy being sucked out of the wires (know what I mean?). So yesterday I turned it off because it usually runs 24/7 and didn't want anything to happen, well tonight I turn it back on and it says that something is corrupt with the registery. Windows 98 was able to fix itself. Yeah i was amazed too. So for now my computer is working but should I back up my hard drive and buy a new one or do you think I should worry about that power supply? Oh and the specs of my computer is "400mhz amd, 128megs ram, 8gig ide drive"

Thanks!

It sounds like a noisy fan to me the best way to check is when it is making the noise find something you can put in the power supply fan to stop it and see if the noise stops, if so change the power supply also take the case off and when it's making the noise look at the cpu fan and see if that is spinning very fast or stuttering

It started 3 days after I got my graphics card, whenever the fans turn on they make a weird noise, but only when they turn on, otherwise they make no other sound, i've checked the cables and they were way clear of the fans, the temporary solution i found to this is I set the GPU fan to be always on at 25% and as the tempuratures gets higher it speeds up. But i would like to know whats happening to it, i'l leave a audio clip I recorded here: https://drive.google.com/open?id=0B-J73FkSVg04bFg2N29qM...

Its a GTX 1050ti from GYGABYTE (single fan);

Hello All,
The noise is really annoying and I take out the video card and try to clean as much as I could but still makes a lot of noise so I unplugged the fan from the power, could this damage my video card? is there any way to replace this kind of fans? if so, where? directly to ATI? What really worries me is the fact of getting my card damaged , so what do you guys suggest? Thank you!

A:The Fan of my ATI 9600XT is making a lot of noise!!

PLUG IT BACK IN STRAIGHT AWAY!!!!!!!!!!!

you'll fry it!

Arctic cooling make an almost silent cooler to suit that card - I used to have one. Cost about $35 Australian.

A Zalman may fit as well. Check the Website.

Antec Smartpower 2.0 450w

Mines making an annoying squealing noise and has been since i got it new. Everest is reading voltages -

CPU CORE = 1.55v (Athlon 64 754 Newcastle 3400+)
AUX = 1.42v (wat is this by the way? it reads temperature from 66 - 150 oC in seconds)
+ 3.3v = 3.26v
+ 5v = 5.00v
+ 12v = 10.88v (sometimes 10.94v)
+ 5 Standby = 5.03v
VBAT = 2.94v

Its slowly driving me insane, its so high frequency mi mum and dad cnt hear it at all! but i can!!!!!!!!

I only recently got this new on eBay which was advertised new from a trusted seller.

Im really hoping someone here can offer me a solution or things to try other than ur psu is on its way out go buy a new one.... im skint.

Thanks in advance!

A:PSU Making a Whining Noise!

It is possible the psu 12v fan bearing is damaged and squealing which would also drag the 12v bus down.

Turn it OFF before you damage the mobo.

It starts up right as the pc starts up. It's an old Dell, running Win 95 or 98 (its my dad's pc, used to be mine back in 1998).

Part list is here: http://support.dell.com/support/top...tails?c=us&cs=19&l=en&s=dhs&~tab=2&~ck=anavml

However, we changed the video card; taking out the card, it's a Mad dog GeForce mx 4000 128 mb, 64bit.

The sound sounds like maybe it's something in the fan of the vid card...its not a clicking but sounds like a bee buzzing really loud--alters slightly in pitch now and then. When I opened up the case and looked around while it was running, the loudest part of the sound seemed to come from the vid. card. When i jiggled the monitor cable coming out of it, it altered in pitch back and forth to the way it was being jiggled.

Looking at it out of the pc, it doesn't look strange, some dust, which I tried cleaning out. When I put it back in, noise was still there.
And, during post, I heard what I think is the video card's shot beep pattern...long, short, short. Then i hear the normal post single beep and it sounds like it's starting normally. However, nothing's on the monitor.
I shut it down and tried again. Got the same thing but this time it shut itself down.

Is the vid card shot?

After getting help from some people on here I checked out my HD with Maxtor and it said everthing was fine. I then used the Samsung utility HUTIL to check my HD and it came up under the master and slave drive saying "none". I still have no idea what is causing my HD to buzz from time to time so any help would be great.
