Automatic Downloads Allow List for Edge

Q: Automatic Downloads Allow List for Edge

I am needing to set a few sites for the "Allow" list within Site Permissions/Automatic Downloads within Microsoft Edge (v.81.0.416.72 64-bit).
Right now, am unable to find anything with Group Policy or the registry to get these listed automatically for users, and would like to prevent having to make each and every user do this for themselves.
Any thoughts/suggestions greatly appreciated!
Thanks!

Preferred Solution: Automatic Downloads Allow List for Edge

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Upgraded my win 7 machine to the free 10. Only problem I have, I can't download files using the Edge browser. The downloads open up in another tab but I can't find a place to click to save them.
The downloads do work using Firefox. There are several complaints on Microsoft's web pages with no answers.

A:How can I set EDGE to by default download to D:\Downloads

Hi:

I do not use Edge, but here is one suggested method (it dates from Aug 2015, but I presume the steps are still valid):

The download folder can be changed in File Explorer, the former Windows Explorer, directly.

Open File Explorer by clicking on the folder icon in the Windows Taskbar, or with the shortcut Windows-e.Locate the Download folder on the left side, right-click on it and select properties from the context menu.Switch to the location tab in the Downloads properties.There you find the current location listed. If you want to set a new folder without moving existing files, simply enter the new path, e.g. d:\downloads and hit apply afterwards.If you want all existing files to be moved, click on move instead, pick a new folder location, and select yes when the move folder prompt appears.Microsoft Edge will use the new folder for all downloads from that moment on.

(NOTE:  Links open in a new tab.)
In the TechNet article
here I see reference to a schema v.2 for the EMIE tool. It will apparently spit out the xml using the new version 2 of the schema. But the download link only goes to downloads for Win7/8 (schema v.1), and I cannot find any reference to where I can obtain
the Windows 10 version.
For example,
this article specifically references a Windows 10 version, where
this one references Windows 7 and 8.  Finding the Windows 10 version has proven impossible so far.
We have several sites which need to be opened in IE instead of Edge, and using our old Enterprise Mode site list is not working on our Windows 10 clients.
Current site list example:
<rules version="4">
    <emie>
          <domain exclude="false">www.contoso.com</domain>
    </emie>
</rules>

Etc.
Reading about the
v.2 schema leads me to think that the output from the tool is incorrect.  The documentation suggests that the output for Windows 10 should be:

<site-list version="205">
  <site url="www.contoso.com">
    <compat-mode>IE8Enterprise</compat-mode>
    <open-in>IE11</open-in>
  </site>
</site-list>

Or am I missing something here?

Edge browser worked fine a few days ago but today I had a major headache with it, first any program I downloaded refused to download, if I retried it downloaded a .txt file, choosing 'save as' only gave me text as an option.
Two: Non of my extensions now work, nothing happens.
Three: Upon opening the page crashes & reopens.
Do I need to reinstall AU or is it a wider problem?
I use IE usually but was getting used to Edge.
I have run sfc & no problems found. Also run chkdsk & ok there.

My question is, ?Is there a way to get your favorites up on your Menu bar the same way as it is I n Firefox?? I just do not care to have to open up the favorites Hub every time and would prefer to go to my drop-down list of favorites like it was in Firefox. Thank you in advance.

Recently I was following a link and landed on a webpage and as soon as I hit it my Firefox download window appeared, some file got downloaded in the blink of an eye and the next thing I knew I was infected with a rootkit!!

I don't want anything like this to happen again so how do I prevent a website from performing a download without my first initiating it? BTW, I'm a software engineer - could someone please explain in technical terms how a website can even do this in the first place? I'm running XP Pro, SP3.

PS - I'm not wedded to Firefox - if it's easier to prevent automatic downloads in IE then please tell me how to do that.

THANKS IN ADVANCE!

A:How to prevent automatic downloads in FF

This kind of exploit is what is termed a drive-by exploit. It can use a security hole in the browser or some other software to circumvent normal security.

If you have Java, Flash or something similar installed that is all it takes.

To better secure FF, make sure you're always running the latest version and use NoScript, FlashBlock and AdBlock. Always be sure any other software you use is up to date. This is especially true of Java, Flash, Adobe Reader, etc.

I have my computer set up to automatically detect Windows XP updates and download them. Updates install when you shut down.

Recently a bunch of downloads occurred but one of them did not get installed due to a missing file (message came from the MS update system). Now, everytime I shutdown, that update attempts to install and stops with the same error that requires a manual response from me.

How do I tell Windows to stop trying to install that update. I want to maintain the auto-update feature but want to get rid of just that one that is not working. I can shut down without the install attempting (option in the shut down window) but I want to get rid of it altogether. I can't find the files or commands that trigger the update on shutdown. Registry entry maybe?

Thanks in advance for any replies.

I have my Automatic Downloads set to "Notify me but don't automatically download or install them":

I have this set to that purposely so that I can go to the Windows Update web site and review the "Critical" updates and decide if I really want to download them . . . because I find out on discussion boards like this that some of them are buggy and then I can wait 'till MS fixes them and then download them later.

That has actually never happened 'till now. While SP3 is probably not buggy, it is some 66MB big and on my primitive dial up would be in excess of 3 hours. So I will ask MS to send me the CD.

But that leaves me with a cosmetic issue. I have that yellow shield, the MS Update notification, showing in my systray perpetually.

I can make it disappear by turning off MS Updates completely, but I don't want to do that. So, is there any way I can make it disappear (and still have it appear when there are future critical updates) by telling it I want to "skip" the SP3 download, or am I going to have to look at it 'till I install SP3 from the CD (which I assume will then make it go away for that SP3 notification for sure)??

Also, when I go to the Windows Update site, I get a confusing notification that reads:
High-priority updates
No high-priority updates for your computer are available. To select other updates, use the options to the left. Seems like the SP3 update should be listed.

Just curious if this is unique to me or if others see this, and/or if it is a known bug.

I oftentimes will use the top sites list to click on a webpage, I click on a new tab and that list is populated with the 8 most used sites I go to. Oftentimes, I will click on a new tab and suddenly the list is totally blank. I can close Edge out, reopen it, and it is populated once again.

Does not appear to be any rhyme or reason to it, seems to be totally random when it happens. And when it does, only way to get them back is to close Edge out and reopen it.

I'm going to put my previous post regarding my problems with corrupted DLL files following a clean install after a major crash. This is for background purposes:
[[Just finished a clean install of Windows XP Home. Computer had black screen with error message. I made several attempts at repairing system using the original install disk. Did multiple malware and virus sweeps. Finally got it working again but it refused to update Windows Security files, constant crashes, hangs, etc. After more repair attempts and malware sweeps gave up and did clean install after backing up my files.

After spending 12 hours on the process of the clean install, installing antivirus software, browsers and security updates, the most recent Windows updates were installed as I restarted (for the 679th time today) whereupon the next bootup was preceded by the computer running CHKDSK on the blue screen. It tried to continue the boot, then went into a cycle of rebooting after the Windows loading screen (before you enter your personal account). Everytime this happened, I saw a blue screen with white type flashing by for a fourth of a second. I couldn't start in safe mode, but I managed to stop the automatic restart and here's what the message on the blue screen said:

Hi Everyone,

I have just bought a new laptop which came with Windows 8 preinstalled. I have since updated to 8.1 Pro with Media Center and so far, touch wood, things appear to be running well.

Having used Windows 7 for ages, I found the change to 8 somewhat difficult but I am slowly figuring it out. There will undoubtedly be things I cannot sort for myself but straight off the bat I have one question:

Where can I change a setting to stop in 8.1 from automatically going on line and downloading stuff I don't want? I do not want to prevent automatic downloading of Windows Updates etc, but I have just turned on and been greeted with a message telling me that Windows has downloaded 9 new apps - Alarms, Calculator, Food & Drink, Health & Fitness, Help & Tips, Reading List, Scan, Sound Recorder, Bing Desktop, and MS Silverlight (yes, I know, this is 10!)

I particularly want to keep this new Laptop free of unnecessary software which I will never use, basically all I want is Word, Excel, email capability, the ability to view TV (when away from home caravanning, hence the upgrade to 'Pro with Media Center') but little else. I will soon be abandoning my home cable internet connection and will be relying on a much reduced plan and so will not want the limited data used up because the O/S automatically loads the computer with rubbish.

Thanks for any suggestions offered, best wishes,

Roger

A:How do I prevent automatic downloads, I have limited data

Hi Roger, welcome to the Eight Forums.

There's quite a lot you can do. First of course is to change Windows Update settings. Best option for you would be to check for updates but letting you to decide which of them if any you want to download. Tutorial: Windows Update - Automatic Updating - Turn On or Off in Windows 8

Second setting to change is the Store App Auto Update. Open Windows Store, open Charms Bar > Settings, select App Updates and turn the automatic app updates off. Tutorial: Store - Enable or Disable Automatic Download of Updates in Windows 8

Next, set your WiFi connection as a metered connection. Open Charms Bar > Connections, right click your Wifi connection and set it metered. Tutorial: Wireless Network - Set or Unset as Metered Connection in Windows 8

Please notice that a wired connection cannot be set as metered. Read more: Metered Internet connections: Frequently asked questions - Microsoft Windows Help.

Even if not set as metered you can always monitor your WiFi bandwidth usage by right clicking the connection and selecting Show estimated data usage:
Now you can see how much data you have uploaded and downloaded since last reset:
I hope this helps you at least to get started.

I was quite surprised at the lack of some of the basic features of Microsoft Edge that have been found in IE for years that are critical in my mind. One of these is the ability to have a drop down list on both the back and forward buttons in the browser to be able to quickly go to a page you've visited without having to click through each individual page.

I was hoping that Edge would get that feature in some of the updates that have taken place, including this most recent November update, but it hasn't happened yet. Does anybody know if this will be a feature added? In the meantime, it's looking more and more like I'll return to IE.

I've voiced concerns over this lack of a Drop-Down list when navigating in Edge. It's such a basic feature that I can't believe it was overlooked by the Edge development team. Even the most basic start-up browsers have this ability...because it's important and useful.

First off Hello everybody and sorry this is my first post I am normally just a lurker. This forum, even though I have never posted ,has been a huge help with quite a few things and a great resource in general.

Trying to clear out the All Apps list on the start menu. Most apps I have uninstalled and utility folders deleted. The 3 things left on there that I would still like to remove are Cortana, Microsoft Edge, and Settings. I do not want to uninstall Cortana or Microsoft Edge. I simply do not want those three things to appear in the list. i.e. I deleted the Administrative Tools folder from programdata/microsoft/windows/startmenu which stops the shortcuts from appearing in the list but I still have access to all the things within.

I know its small but its important. On a side note I could have sworn i read somewhere that microsoft was going to be updating their upgrade system so you no longer had to do an in place upgrade before you could do a clean install. Does anybody know anything about that or is that not a thing. I do not seem to be able to find the original article I was reading and may have misread.

Bit of a late reply here, but the issue is still relevant so I thought I would reply.

As yet there still seems to be no solution to this problem. Microsoft have bypassed the normal folders that list apps in the start menu so that some apps can't be removed from the list. This includes Edge, Cortana and... Read more

Hello,
I am so glad I found this site. My laptop has something bad on it that is causing the following problems.
When I use Google Crome automatically downloads small files every time I go to a different web page. It began also opening Crome when I was using other browsers so I removed Crome to stop that.
When I use Firefox and go to web sites specially ones that require log in info, Internet Explorer (IE) automatically opens to commercial websites. And sometimes I have to use Task Manger to get IE to close after these ads show up.
When I use Internet Explorer it almost always automatically opens another tab with a commercial web site. which causes IE to be very slow and lock up alot.
And last but the worst is this bad thing is somehow blocking all antivirus software from finding it and from checking all downloads for viruses all I get is a notice that reputation information is unavailable or unknown. I have downloaded and scanned using Norton, Mcaffe, and Dell virus and malware detect software and none of them can help other than finding alot of tracking cookies to remove.
I really hope there is something I can do to get rid of this nasty bad thing and get my laptop back.
Thank you in advance for any help you can give me.

I'm in the process of renaming about 13K photos using an AutoHotKey script to speed things up. I'm using the OS (Win 10 Home) to display the pics: START>THIS PC>SPARE DRIVE D then double-click on the folder containing the pics. I have File Explorer (in full screen) displaying 16 pics (files) as EXTRA LARGE ICONS.

I select the first file to rename then start the AHK script. The script issues an F2 keypress (rename), outputs a string which I then add to and press RETURN. The script then causes a jump (right arrow) to the next file and start the process all over again. I can continue doing this for several screen refills. As each bottom row of files is renamed, all the files on screen move up one row to access the next row of files.

With an annoying frequency, without any keys pressed either by me or the script, I'm suddenly looking at the top of the file list; the first 16 files I've already renamed. Focus is still on the file selected when this happens but it's now off-screen and the script is locked up.

Lest you think the script has anything to do with this, as an experiment I've started File Explorer, moved down several screens worth of files and then walked away for a while without starting the script. When I come back, I find that I'm once again looking at the top of the file list.

UPDATE: It occurred to me that even though I wasn't using that part of the script in the above experiment, the entire script was always running ... Read more

Hi,

I am trying to help a co-worker automate her email notification to employees who have not followed correct procedures on their expense reports. She has an Excel spreadsheet with the name and email address for each employee, along with 10 columns to represent the type of violation. I have attached a sample of the spreadsheet, where an 'X' indicates the nature of the problem. She would like to be able to run a macro to automatically send an email to each person with an 'X' in any of the columns. In the text of the email, it would indicate the month (from column C) and the type of problem based on the column header.

For example, based on the attached sample file, John Smith would receive an email as follows:

Hello,

Your September expense report was submitted with the following errors:

Blank GL Codes
Missing or Incomplete Description
Please correct the errors and resubmit this expense report.

Thank you,
Susan Larson

I'm an accountant who has done some automation using macros in Excel and Access, but I'm not sure which application would be best for this situation. If it would be easier, I can set this up in Access, but I would prefer Excel since my co-worker has more experience with spreadsheets than databases.

I found several other threads explaining how to send an automatic email from Excel, but I haven't found one for sending an individualized email to a list of recipients. If this question has been answered, please feel free to ... Read more

I have a Lenovo ThinkCentre desktop computer, model M81 MT-M 5032-W25, Serial # MJCFKNV. It came with Windows 7 Pro, but I have since upgraded to Windows 10 Pro (64 bit) using Microsoft's free offer. I have registered my computer on your support site twice - the second time I included my Windows 10 Pro Product ID #. I have 2 questions for you: 1) I want to use your support site to download the latest Lenovo software & drivers for my particular computer, including the proper BIOS update. How do I do this when the drop down menu for OS doesn't include Windows 10 Pro? The closest I can choose is Windows 8.1 64 bit. 2) I recieved my computer as a gift. If it came with a Lenovo software CD or DVD, I don't have it. Can you give me a download link, or mail me a replacement?

When sending an email in Outlook 2003, I often create lists. Outlook automatically creates a list format using bullets and numbering. However, I do not want to use this feature. How do I turn it off? Thanks.

A:Outlook 2003 - How to Turn Off Automatic List

Most likely you have Word set as your default Outlook email editor. As soon as you begin typing something that it recognizes as a potential bulleted or numbered list, highlight the line in question and:Pull down the Format menu, choose Bullets & Numbering. Click on the Numbered or Bulleted tab (whichever is the case). Click the None option, then OK. When you return to the email, the numbers or bullets will be gone, but your line may be indented. You should have the formatting toolbar visible. Click on the Decrease Indent button once or twice (depending whether it was a numbered or bulleted list) and the line will then be aligned at the left margin.

This site is amazingly helpful. The post http://forums.techguy.org/business-applications/954888-automatic-email-excel-list.html worked perfectly on the first attempt, it didn't require a single bit of code change.

My question is this, how would I instead of emailing the header where there is an X email the specific data that is in the cell where the X would be found along with the header? Also, is it possible to specify recipients based on the Month? For instance, I only want to email those for September.

Missing Receipts - 0
Blank GL Codes - 3
Missing or Incomplete Description - 2

I made a small change to the original spreadsheet as a reference.

Thank you very much!

A:Automatic Email Excel List part 2

Hi, welcome to the forum.
I edited your file so that you can make a choice of what you want to mail
ALL months or just one specific month
I don't understand about the Header, I see it but what is the 'Specific Data' you mention? There is nothing there it's just an X or do you mean other data?

Example: You have a folder open with pictures in it. The Explorer window for said window is in List view mode, and at least 2 rows are visible. The file you want to open is in the 2nd row. When you click the file, it automatically scrolls the list so that the file you selected is in the left-most row, rendering any double-click on the 2nd or subsequent rows ineffective. Instead of opening the file, it selects the file, immediately scrolls it's row back, selects the new file that has scrolled into that row in the same position and scrolls it back as well.

Is it possible to institute a small delay on the automatic scrolling to allow for double-clicking or disable the behavior entirely?

Sorry if this has been covered before, I couldn't find any relevant info through searching.

What is happening with the BIOS updates download links for Ideapad 510-15ISK? under Drivers & Software there is no BIOS download mentioned anymore and i checked regularly during the last few days. Is there a new BIOS being prepared to fix a critical bios problem or have they been removed because Lenovo intends to stop supporting this product series and it has been tagged as End Of Life?My notebook is barely 10 months into its 2-year warranty but it wouldn't surprise me anymore, Lenovo pulled the same crap when i bought my Moto E 2015 LTE (surnia) - they stopped updates barely 6 months into my 2-year warranty.

Hello,
I'm someone who often needs to identify a file or its source by typing Cntrl-J and searching the list of downloaded files.

Well now I've finally had it with IE 11 and plan to uninstall it using the method described in Internet Explorer 11 - Uninstall in Windows 7 (using Option 2, the FORFILES /P ... method) and "downgrade" to IE 10.

I know how to preserve my Favorites and cookies, and even history, though in a different format, but how can I preserve the list of downloaded files? Anyone know? I can't even figure out where it's stored. (This is IE 11).
Thank you for you kind assistance,

A:How can I preserve the list "View Downloads" in IE when downgrading

Hi and welcome to SevenForums,
I don't believe you need to use Option 2 but that's up to you
Uninstalling the ie11 update in the conventional way should work fine,
If you don't want it back alter your windows update settings to Check for updates but let me choose when to download and install them,
Then simply uninstall ie11 and Hide it when it appears,
Recheck for updates and other versions will appear,

If you saved the downloads the default destination is the Downloads folder it doesn't matter if Ctrl+J shows them or not,
Click Start and Downloads everything should be there even if you uninstall ie11,
Cheers.
