I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

hello,

haven't been here for a while because haven't got much time to sit and enjoy the computer how are you guys doing?

well, I believe that vista comes with loads more problems than XP. I messed up my XP because I mess with it, but vista? doesn't even touch it but it messed up by itself! argh.

to make the story short. about 3 hrs ago I went online and presented with 14 new CRITICAL updates from windows update. I picked everything that's under 1MB in size so I can speed up the install process. the last time I tried to install everything, got many problems from some updates refused to install and some are even failing and wants to be re-downloaded only to fail again because the order of installing those stuff isn't correct. nuts. well anyway, so I picked about 6-8 updates if not mistaken. then the computer wants to reboot, so I did let it reboot, and it came back OK. then I left for the bathroom for about 5 minutes, when I came back the screen already go to screen saver mode and when I move the mouse all I see is this garbled display. so I shut the computer down, waited about 10 minutes and turn it on. the problem is worse, the whole screen is white! I can't see a darn thing. it turned black for a while when the windows green bar thingy supposed to came on, but then it goes back to white. geez!

even though I want to roll back those updates so much, how can I do it without being able to see what's on the screen? and I've been rea... Read more

I have tried multiple time to install the Thinkpad BIOS UPdate - 7/8 [32,64]/8.1/10 [64].I follow instructions to plug-in and close all programs. The installing bars will not complete past 91%. There is a prompt that asks to pick Thinkpad or Model Number. When I click Thinkpad and NEXT the computer SHUTS DOWN immediately (right after warning not to shut down or damage may occur). The computer screen goes black and 3 ominous beeps repeated 3 or 4 times sound. When I restart my computer nothing has updated. I am unable to complete the Critical Update after trying 4 or 5 times. Hi, My 6-mo old x270 suddenly would not book passed bios stage. It was functioning perfectly, it is reasonably new, and under warranty. Here's what's happening (I compiled all the screenshots into one file): If I boot it, I end up in a Windows Boot Manager, that looks like this: see attached "Image 1" Nothing happens from there. "Image 2" shows the message right before the computer enters the Boot Manager. "Image 3" is the screenshot of my Bios "Startup" settings. I messed around with settings, but nothing helped. "Image 4" I then ran all the diagnostics tests. They were all ok except for the harddrive. That test says: "Smart short self-test: FAILED." This is in "Image 5". Please advise me what to do, whether I can try anything else, or whether I need to contact Lenovo or a retailer. I believe the computer is under warranty. This is, of course, very frustrating to have this happen to a new, expensive computer - shakes my faith in Thinkpads a bit, to be honest. I hope I'm missing something though... Thank you.

See this companion thread on Dell's forum detailing my unsucessful attempts to use Dell U2415 monitors with my Thinkpad T450s. As of now, the moderator of that site has not been able to identify a solution. I have two of the u2415 monitors, and it seems extremely unlikely both pieces of hardware are defective. Therefore, am assuming this is a problem with the Thinkpad. Any ideas what might be going wrong? When I press F7 it gives me the option to select "extend", etc, but nothing appears on the monitor. Similarly, the monitor realizes something is plugged into its DP port (via the mDP port on the Thinkpad), but it is receiving no picture. So it's close to working, but is not working. Appreciate any help. Anyone else currently using a Thinkpad T450s with a Dell U2415? Barring responses from others with different experiences, I would not recommend buying a Dell U2415 if you hope to connect it to this model of Thinkpad. Though given that the problem appears to be on the Thinkpad's end, I guess I wouldn't recommend buying the Thinkpad if you're averse to these kinds of connectivity issues.

And what should I do to resolve it? Also, if the Driver can't be properly updated, what is its purpose for my system? Any form of help concerning this Driver update issue would be appreciated.

My Desktop has been experiencing this issue for several years now.  When I shut down my computer or go through the restart process the signal to the monitor is lost and will not come back.
I see the "Shutting down" blue screen and when it flips to restart, the display disappears.  The computer still hums away and restarts (I believe) but the display does not return. I've tried several different monitors, video cards and connections (HDMI, VGA, DVI) even on the motherboard video slot.
I have found that by :
1: Holding the power button to hard shutdown the computer.
2: Pulling the power cord and removing the CMOS battery
3: Wait 10 seconds to clear then replace and restart the computer
This clears the issue and the display comes back up right away. I don't know why, but it always does.  However, the problem happens every time I try to restart.

A:Display fails to come back up after restart

There looks to be two suspect faults that would show those failures.  The power supply could be failing to get a reset on power off, some system power save functions can create this too.  The other failure would be the monitor as it's the only common item.  The CMOS reset does seem to point to a fault on the MOBO not getting reset properly,  strange that it seems to boot without video.  Try the P/S first  then another monitor.  The video connection has a reset line and it appears the video card or onboard are not sending the signal on a restart.   Still think something's going on with that CMOS.

Hi, I have Vista Ultimate x64 on my laptop and it recently installed a stack of 17 updates. Since then, I have been getting lines across my screen where the display driver failed to load the info correctly. They were sporadic and rare so I thought they were just due to the age of my computer. Then it got so bad that my screen distorted with the corners of the windows I had open somehow faced into the screen. When I tried to boot it, however it failed when it should have displayed the desktop, all I see is my mouse and a black void, occasionally my screen shuts off completely. I sucessfully started in safemode, but then it only last about 5 minutes before shutting off due to overheating.

I'd like to know if this is due to the update or not, and how to fix it if possible. I have my reformatting CD's as last resort, but I want to be fairly sure it would work before I do that.

A:Display driver fails after the last update.

Hello Lyikos,
Do you know the cause of the over heating, what component is causing it, i would check all the vents are clear and all the fans are working, you may need to go inside and clear out all the fluff and stuff that has accumulated over time.
It does look like it is heat related, but you need to eliminate the heat issue first so we can go from there.
Hope this helps, good luck and post your results.

Five days ago I began getting Memory Reference errors, followed by fatal errors. A typical prompt would say, "Instruction at 0x00ae027d referenced memory at 0x00f2a000". Pressing OK resulted in a fatal error message pointing to 0x00f35000. A hard restart was possible. These errors were seemingly random, and occurred after at least an hour of operation.

The following tests were run in Safe Mode, or Safe Mode with Networking.

Because the errors pointed to memory I ran MemTest86+, version 4.00 through 36 full passes. All without errors.

Suspecting a corrupted registry entry, virus or spyware, I ran a complete virus scan with F-Prot, which I have used for over 20 years. No viruses were found. I noted that the active file protection was not enabled, though I had enabled that protection some time back. Attempts to activate that protection failed. A conversation with Frisk Software International resulted in uninstalling F-PROT, downloading and installing a new copy. Active file protection still could not be enabled. Frisk suggested running Spybot.

Ran Spybot, finding several mild spyware incursions which were eradicated.

Ran chkdsk /f on drive I: (my boot drive), and was prompted that the drive was in use, and asked if I wanted to run chkdsk /f on the next boot, to which I acquiesced. Running chkdsk /f resulted in some fixes.

Ran chkdsk K: /f and was presented with a prompt which I foolishly thought was telling me the drive was in use, etc. I hit "Y" only ... Read more

Hi there,

I've recently installed the tor browser on my Linux Nadia OS and also on Windows 8. Neither has worked well whatsoever.

I have no trouble connecting to the network but every time I enter a new URL the page times out and fails to connect. Basically when I use the Tor network it is useless.

Thus far I have simply installed the 64-bit version of the latest Tor Browser Bundle. I have no installed privoxy or any add-ons. I have tried rebooting my OS several times as well as 'sudo killall tor' then restarting tor. I have also tried deleting the install and extracting and unpacking the bundle which has not worked. I also saw another fellow on a forum changed the time of his clock and that worked for him. I moved by time zone +1 hour and it has not done anything.

I am running Linux Nadia, further details can be provided if need be.

Please help as I am eager to use the Tor network to read many hidden and interesting documents. Also if anyone has knowledge on accessing deeper levels of the web, that would be something I would like to discuss.
Kudos to all.

Okay guys i have a puzzling one for you... I'm running my trusty Emachines E527 with Windows 8 RP. I was playing Minecraft on an external monitor (a TV) and I get a blue screen... no biggie I've dealt with these before. I do a hard reset and turn my computer back on and I don't get an image on my laptop screen. I take a flashlight to my screen ( I've had back light issues before thought it might happen again) and nothing... no image or anything. I decided to take it apart and use a voltage tester on the inverter to see if it's even sending power to it and I don't get a reading anywhere. Furthermore no external monitor hookup will display an image either

This must be a software error... though I don't get a boot splash either..

This one is beyond me.. someone on another forum suggested clearing the cmos. I only have a battery in there on my motherboard but it is soldered to the board itself... kinda hard to clear...

I leave on vacation tonight and I need my laptop so any help would be greatly appreciated....

My problem:

I have several 2 ext hard drives of different sizes (1TB - independently powered, 120GB) and the same problem occurs with all of them.

When I start up my laptop, the drives will appear in My Computer. I am able to Explore them, everything works perfectly. However, when any of them become disconnected, be it accidentally or through Safely Remove Hardware, they will not be displayed in My Computer upon reconnection. The sound will play confirming that the computer has recognised that a device has been connected, but I am not able to use the drive(s) because Windows Explorer does not show they are there.

I then went to Computer > Manage > Disk Management. None of the devices are listed. I also looked in Device Manager > Disk Drives and all the drives connected to the computer are listed.

I was not sure whether this was a "partition problem" (put in brackets because I don't know what partitions are!) because the devices DO work initially when I start up. It is only when I reconnect that the problem occurs.

It would not be too much hassle to reboot every time this happens, but one of the hard drives has a temperamental cable and gets accidentally disconnected quite frequently.

Additional notes:
- All drives work perfectly on other computers, both upon start-up and reconnection
- The makes of the drives are WD and Toshiba

If there is any other information that I should provide, please ask. Any help would be greatly apprec... Read more

Try using an external monitor. You may have to enable the external monitor port using keys on the keyboard. If the external monitor works, your laptops LCD backlight is probably burned out

Hello. I've a computer with these specs:

Windows 7 Ultimate x64
CPU: AMD FX-8320
Motherboard: ASUS M5A97 R2.0
Memory: 8 GB GeIL DRAGON 1600 (2x4GB)
Graphics Card: Sapphire R9 280X Dual-X
Hard Drives: 1 TB Internal Seagate Barracuda, 1 TB Seagate External
PSU: Corsair VS550 80+ Gold
Case: Sentry GS-6000
Coolin: DeepCool GAMMAXX 300
WiFi adapter: D-Link DWA-510
Monitor: Samsung BW2253+ LCD

All the latest drivers and Windows updates are installed. But, if I set the computer to turn off the display after a while/go to sleep, ad it stays in that state for a while (it works fine after a minute or two) it fails to turn on the display. i.e, the computer is working fine, e.g if you are playing music, it play fine, the display just won't turn on and the only way to fix it is to use the reset button. I read somewhere that turning off PCI-E power save might fix it, but it didn't.

Anyway, thanks in advance.

I've tried several times now to update my graphics driver from 10.18.15.4281 to 20.19.15.4360Hp1. Everytime I try to update it through the HP Support assistant it fails. I even found the setup file on my computer and tried to install it manually and it still failed. When I updateded it manually it said that one or more driver updates has failed.

I was told that the display on a laptop is very fragil, and that you should never, NEVER touch it with anything. What is a safe way of cleaning the TFT display? I work in a pretty dusty environment and the TFT is developing a "crust" which I want to remove before it gets any worse. Any ideas out there?

Hey everyone,
I recently ran into the issue that the backlight on my Lenovo Thinkpad W520 for the display wont light up ( i took the LCD and shined a flashlight behind it to ensure that it was being digitized which it was). It worked fine one day until I turned on the laptop and the screen was black. I have reseated all the RAM, bought new cables for the display, a new inverter for the display, and even a new screen. I have unplugged the CMOS battery to reset the BIOS, and tried holding the power button for long amounts of time with the battery and power cord disconnected. Holding the power button down and restarting fixed my Thinkpad T410 when the same issue happened 3 times before, but it wont fix this issue. All of this never happened on the T410 for the 2 years I had Windows 7 on it but now both machines run Windows 10 Pro. I removed the hard drive from the W520 just in case it was a problem with the drive. Also I am testing the screen with the laptop display assembly disassembled. Please help, I am lost as to what I can do.

The screen on my laptop has some yellowish-red/pinkish blotches on the sides/edges. I shutdown my computer multiple times and it still displays this abnormality. What is the issue?
