Help...WinMX downloads duplicate files???

Q: Help...WinMX downloads duplicate files???

After recently upgrading to the newer version of WinMX, my computer now downloads two copies of a single file. What could be the problem? Any advice is appreciated!

Preferred Solution: Help...WinMX downloads duplicate files???

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I just upgraded to version 3.22. Whenever I double-click on a file that has multiple users, I only end up connecting to a maximum of 5 users to download the file from. When I had version 3.10, this wasn't a problem--I'd be able to download the same file from more than 5 users at once. I've checked the settings under file transfer for max number of downloads, but that doesn't seem to matter. Anyone have any ideas?

Thanks!

I checked my firewall and the culprit is WinMX, with lots of connections being made to my machine.

Hi.
Recently I reformmated my hard drive, and reinstalled winmx. I had incomplete files backed up on a cd. I've placed them back into my "My Music" folder, but they don't show up in the tansfer screen of winmx, even after clicking "Load Incomplete".
Can anyone help with this.

Thanks.

A:Winmx Incomplete Downloads

Hi,

Don,t take my word for this as I may be wrong. But the incomplete files are in the "My Music folder", but they are not recognised by WinMx as incomplete files as now they have nothing to do with Winmx, as far as your system is concearned they are just music files. And the names happen to be Incomplete.

i'm sorta new to file-sharing, but not so new i haven't begun to figure out which ones work a lot better than some other ones. so my best instincts led me to win mx pretty quickly and i downloaded it this morning.

BUT-- where the hell are my downloaded files? actually, i don't really even care WHERE they are, there is absolutely nothing evident in the toolbar for playing the damn things. and their 'help' window is "temporarily" (?) down.

great resource in terms of files available, and pretty fast on download times so far. but not a lot of use if you can't listen to them.

have i missed the nose on the end of my face? have i missed a step in setting it up? (don't think so).

i have folders in my c drive called 'my downloads', 'my shared folders', and i even took someone's advice (techguy's, i think) and created a new folder i called 'winmx downloads'. all my kazaalite and previous downloads have gone into one or more of the above no problem, and there are multiple routes for playing them.

the thing, too, about winmx, is that once a download is complete, it disappears to.... somewhere..... in a matter of minutes, although i did try double-clicking on it just before it vanished. no dice. spooky.

should i uninstall it and start over? or what?

thanks in advance

Hello,

I have 2 computers - an eMachines desktop and a Gateway laptop. They are both Windows 7, and I use Windows Live Mail on both. I use the desktop during the day, and set up the laptop on the bed for the evening before I go to sleep. I have 3 email addresses, and want to use the 3rd one on both computers. This way, I don't have to have my friends or groups writing to me at two different addresses, which is difficult to remember and complicated for them. When I'm not at the desktop, I want to receive the email from the 3rd address on the laptop, and vice versa.

The problem that arises is, I get full downloads of all emails for the day on both computers. Anything I've already received on the desktop is also received when I move to the laptop later in the day. Is there any way to stop these duplicate downloads?

I've had this problem for years. My Windows Live Mail 2012 frequently (not always) downloads duplicates of every new email. The email protocol is POP3. Someone suggested I should use IMAP. I tried it. . . but, at least with Comcast's system, IMAP duplicates what's on the server. . . which can go back several years of emails. . . which I DO NOT want to retain. Comcast provides no option to delete emails older that X days, so when I switched to IMAP, every g.d. email I've received in the last 3 years downloaded to my Inbox. So I went back to POP3.

So why do I get duplicates?

I have computer 1 with Office 365 Outlook - with email account. If I have a second computer and copy the .pst file from one computer to the other, I know that when I open Outlook all the existing emails will be there, calendar, etc. But if I have Outlook set to leave messages on the server, will the old messages be downloaded causing duplicates? I know that Outlook keeps an ID record of emails that are downloaded - but is this kept within the *pst file? If so then it should work that I can copy the *pst file and carry on without duplicates. I can understand that if I created a new blank account with nothing in it, then the old files would download...but will this still happen if I just copy & paste the email *pst account file across (keeping the name the same) - same Office 365....

A:Sharing files on WinMx!!

By using Google you'd have found this in about 0.21 seconds!

Sharing Files
In order to be able to download what you want from others, you must be prepared to share files of your own.
In WinMX, click the Shared Files button at the top left.
Click the Share Folder button on that page.
Browse to find the folder you want to share.
Highlight the folder and click OK.
Repeat as necessary to share more folders or share a root folder (such as My Music) and all sub-folders under it will also be shared.
Never use the Scan For Media button as this can share junk files that no one will want.

I have been using Winmx for sometime. At first I was on dialup connection. A few months back I went to a satellite high speed connection still using 2.6. Recently I "upgraded" to 3.2 and then 3.22. Had all kinds of problems. Switched back to 2.6 a couple of days ago. I can download fine with good speed (average anywhere from 20.0 k/s to 100.0 k/s and often higher) but when others attempt to upload my files, they almost always get a "timed out waiting for incoming connection" message. When they (rarely) do connect, their speed is so slow it is usually unacceptable (often less than 1 k/s and only as high as 4.0 k/s). I am running XP on a hp pavilion 540n. I have Earthlink broadband service on a Hughs Network two way communications Satellite System. I check my bandwidth on 2wire.com and it averages 300 to 800. I checked my set up and it shows as follows: TCP: SMTP Port 25; TCP: NNTP: Port 119; TCP: POP3 Port 110; UDP: DNS Port 53. I'm not sure how the settings are configured on my Winmx 2.6 setup. That may be the problem but I don't know how to check/change them. I have tried uninstalling and re-installing Winmx and it doesn't help. I want very much to be able to share files. Thanks for the opportunity you provide.

A:Folks can't upload my winmx files.

I had a similar problem using WinMX when I upgraded to WinXP Pro for an operating system. This may be so simple that you are overlooking it but with me it was XP's built in firewall feature that was causing the problems with timeouts on upload attempts. Until looking into why this was happening I wasn't even aware that the XP firewall was there let alone active.

I have a Dell Inspiron 3000 desktop using Office 365. I have had to rely on the Microsoft's free Tech Support a number of times; upgrading to Windows 10, elements of office not working, etc. Several times, rather then fixing the issue at hand the Techs have created new user profiles. This leads to my current problem. Under the "Users" file their are 10 users listed: Bob, bobhu, Default.migrated, Default AppPool, Public, Robert, Temp, Test, Test2, Test Profile with only 2 actual user accounts on the computer. This has led to multiple duplicate files in different locations on the computer. For some reason (it may be related to installation of Windows updates), the computer will ocassionally revert back to a previous user profile. If not caught immediately this can lead to updating of old files rather then the current version of a file. Do it yourself.

Keep the two actual User accounts plus Public and Default.

Then, working on one of the others at a time, copy or move any files desired to Public or one of your actual accounts. Then remove that non-wanted account and its data. (In Windows 8.1 this would be in Control Panel - User Accounts; should be similar in Windows 10.) If the User account does not appear in the list of user accounts then you can just delete the folder from C:\Users.

Hi and thank you for reading me
Several days ago, I launched a in-depth scan with avast! and a few problems popped-up. Most of them were called PUP and were located in my Temporary Internet Files. I found the ones for IE and deleted them but I don't know if Mozilla has its own separate files. Furthermore, one identified as a trojan was located in my Windows Defender scans file (I have the name of the specific infected file if that might help) but I can't find it and even if I did, I don't know what to do with it. Do I just delete it or do I have to do anything else ?

Also prior to that scan, I had very bad network connexion problems. I basically couldn't have access to the web for one of those three reasons :
- Home network but no Internet access
- Unidentified network with Internet access
- Unidentified network and no Internet access
Someone suggested that I might be infected so I did the scan. Now after that, my connexion is much better but not flawless, so I'm wondering if those PUP's might have something to do with it.

Lastly, I've been trying to download .exe files from several hosting sites and everytime I do, in the last few seconds of my download, Mozilla freezes. Seconds later, the file is supposedly on my computer and what I find instead is a file named trzF636.tmp The problem only ever comes with hosting sites and it's K-I-L-L-I-N-G me !

One option in JV16 that I recommend you never use is the Find Duplicates. You have to be very knowledgeable to use this feature. Usually one of the "duplicates" can be removed and one is required, but it takes a very knowledgeable person to make that decision.

It seems to me that no matter how well managed (defragged, compacted, etc.) the HD is, duplicated files and folders drag down a computer. In addition to wasting HD space, of course. That's why I'm trying to get rid of at least some of the dupes in mine.

In this pursuit, I just dl'ed and ran a duplicate-file finder/cleaner program for the first time. It found 18305 duplicate groups (# of files duped 2X + # of files duped 3X, etc., totalled), 52300 duplicated files, 4.26 GB duplicate size. Holy #^&%! These are TRUE duplicate files (compared byte-to-byte). The dupe program has a "quick and dirty" button to instantly delete all but the first file in each of the dupe groups. That is certainly an easy solution, but it's also dangerous I think. The way I see it, I need to take a look at each of the files, (think about what they do, why they're where they are, if I want to keep them there or put them somewhere else), and then decide if I want to get rid of one or more of the duplicates.

This is complicated. Example: Let's say I have a folder of customized icons, and the folder happens to be duplicated in several places, and other files/folders use those icons, i.e., they get the icons via a path (thread, whatever you call it) to ONE of the duplicated icon source folders. Right? Right. So now what happens if I move or delete the wrong duplicate source folder? No custom icons is what happens. Because the path is a dead end. ... Read more

A:How Did I Get All These Duplicate Files?

It might help if we knew which application you downloaded to find the duplicates; it may be the output can be manipulated or sorted in such a way as to make deletion an easier process.
If you could give one or two examples of the duplicate files (including the path, of course), it might help us understand what KIND of files are being duplicated and this would suggest a cause of it in the first place.

And how do I get rid of them?

Just ran duplicate-file finder program first time. Found 18305 duplicate groups (?, think that's folders), 52300 duplicated files, 4.26 GB duplicate size!!!! Those are TRUE duplicate files (compared bit-to-bit) to find, think about what's in them, where they are, why they're there, if I want them there or somewhere else or if i want them at all, and then decide to get rid of one (or more) of the duplicate(s).

What about this, as an example? Say I have a folder of special icons and it happens to be duplicated in several places. And I have other folders using those icons; they get the icons via a path that I originally setup to ONE of the duplicated icon source folders. What happens if I move or delete the wrong source folder. No icons. Because the path to get them is a dead end.

A:How did I get all these duplicate files?

Hi brillo

I wouldn't worry too much about a large number of duplicate files. Today's hard drives are large enough that it's rarely a problem -- whereas a deleted item that a favorite program wants to use can be a true pain.

Check your duplicate-files program, and see if you can direct it to not look in the System Restore folders [aka "System Volume Information"] . Many of the duplicates can be from restore points. Many are also likely from the "Uninstall" files and folders for Windows Updates, and for the programs you've installed.

Try limiting the areas your duplicate-files program checks, and try a less-aggressive run of "Disk Cleanup" [Start/All Programs/Accessories/System Tools/Disk Cleanup], which doesn't bother program folders & won't result in your programs complaining.

Running Disk Cleanup now and then should be maintenance enough for most computers.

Best of luck
. . . Gary

P.S. .. many of the duplicates are likely small images and files from several folders in your Temporary Internet Files folders & subfolders. In Start/Control Panel/Internet Options ... go to the "Advanced" tab, and under the Security section, place a checkmark in the box next to "Empty Temporary Internet Files folder when browser is closed" -- this will keep the temporary files from hanging around in the first place. They really aren't needed - it's a relic from the days of 14.4k and 28k dialup modems. Make the Inte... Read more

Personally I dont believe in those types of programs. BY removing a file that may be deemed a duplicate, you may break a program that has extra functionality built in or looks for a file in a specific location.

If it checks for duplicates only by name and not other characteristics, then I would not use it.

I am new to Windows 7 and I got a little sloppy when I ran Easy Transfer a 2nd time. I didnt realize that there was much more control of what got transfered (I know how, now) and I ended up with 100's of duplicate files.
I know that I have seen a program that searches for & deletes duplicates but I cant remember where I saw it. Is it a part of Win 7, or a seperate program? This is one job I dont want to do manually! Can you lead me to
this program? Thanks...............

A:How do I get rid of 100's of duplicate files?

Hi,

There is no built in feature for this in Windows. There are a few third party applications that can help you with this, but I strongly advice against it, especially if you have important files on your drive.

First google result was:

Feel free to search for an alternate application if you like.

A scan with EasyCleaner gives me 1792 duplicate files in 761 groups, which I select for deletion but it wouldn't do it. How do I get rid of them in ONE step? Could it be one of the reasons of my sluggish system performance? Any assistence will be much appreciated.

A:Very many Duplicate Files!

Are you running any anti virus, and anti spyware programs, and are they
up to date? Have you did a system defrag lately? You may not want
to use the cleaner, imho they cause more harm than good. Machines
Ive worked on that are sluggish, and slow down to a crawl are usually
spyware related taking up all of your resources...

is there out there a software package that would identify duplicates files to be deleted.I mean truly duplicates.the ones that could be deleted without any second thoughts.

A:duplicate files

Hi " without second thoughts" is the problem.

There are some even free ones that will find duplicate files and make a back up but not one guarantees you won't get caught.

Nowadays disks are so big that it is not worth the risk. Peace Mal

Can anyone explain this to me? In windows 7 on my C: I have a users folder and a documents and settings folder that both contain the same files and sub folders. They seem to be mirrors of each other to me. If I save a file it is placed in both places. At first I thought on folder just pointed to the other but the drives capacity shows that there must be two duplicate files.

A:Duplicate Files

Welcome to the forums!

Hmmmmmmmmm........... your post made me check my C drive. Nope, no Doc.& Setting's folder.... someone more knowledgeable will have to tell you why the documents and settings folder is there. I've had "misplaced files" before and after a bit I just got tired of seeing them and did a reinstall which "fixed" the problem. I'm sure there's a less drastic solution available though. In the meantime, have you ran an sfc/scannow? Here's a tutorial on how to do that if you haven't before, just click on the link : SFC /SCANNOW Command - System File Checker

Ok, so as you guys can see I don't have much room left on my laptop.I've just run duplicate cleaner 1.3 which I think came from www.filehippo.com. When I ran it it says I have 9000 odd duplicate files and I've looked at the list and they are duplicates but most are in the windows folder. Are there supposed to be that many duplicates. Will it screw my laptop if I delete them. Normally I would re-format but I've misplaced the os disk.

thx guys

Hi,
I don't know about those Windows files, but have you thought about moving some of your doc, pics, tunes etc to an external hard drive? You can pick up 1 terabyte ones (massive storage capacity in a box the size of a paperback) for around 70 or so. If you could buy two possibly smaller ones you could then have a backup in case you don't already have one.
One set of prices: http://direct.tesco.com/homepage/hard-drives-and-data-storage.aspx
Just a thought.

Richard.
