I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hello everybody.

I'm having some trouble with both Spybot and Ad-aware.

Yesterday I updated both these programs to the newer builds. From Spybot 1.2 to 1.3 and from Ad-aware SE 1.02 to 1.03.

Since then whenever I start to scan with ad-aware I get a notification that

DCOM Server Process Launcher Service terminated unexpectedly Click to expand...
and the computer restarts (it has like a 50 second countdown). It's only happening when I scan with ad-aware, this I'm sure of.

Then Spybot. I know there's adware in my PC. Before it restarts like above Ad-aware gets to about 9 Critical objects. But Spybot doesn't get any because there's always and error when searching. Always. Attached is a screenshot of the error.

I was told at another forum to go back to previous versions (which makes lots of sense) but I can't find those installers anywhere, only the new ones.

I'm having problems using these two scanners----Ad Aware and Spybot S&D. Ad Aware will start the scan fine but then it gets 'stuck' when it is deep scanning the 'C' files. By the time it gets there it says that '4 new critical objects were detected' so far but I am not able to do anything because the scan itself is 'stuck'. I have even tried letting it run completely overnight and the scan was still stuck scanning 'C'.

SpyBot has trouble updating. It gets 'stuck' when it's downloading the updates.
I never had this problem before with either program and they are both updated.

What could the problem be? Should I uninstall and reinstall them?

Just curious.
Everyone on TSG seems to like it far as I can tell, but *someplace* on the Board there was a post (or thread) regarding SpyBot removing the files for the phone dialer, and it had to be reloaded then set up again. Anyone know who it was that made the original post about the phone problem?
Are there particular boxes that have to be checkmarked to set the program up correctly after the prog.'s downloaded?
Before downloading it, do I have to first make a folder in 'Programs' to download it into, or does it make its own folder (or folders)?
Is it useable with DirectX 6.1a?
Forgot to say in original post that i found something on the SpyBot homepage that makes me VERY worried about using it.
In the screenshots, they refer specifically to a function (shown with checkmark -- green, I think) called Dialer.sbi that "Removes Expensive Dialers"
Now, what does THIS do!? I certainly wouldn't want the dialer settings for my comp. deleted!
And noted that they refer to prog. as "Use At Your Own Risk" (Hmmmm....).

Hi parklife, Our apologies for the delay. If you still require help, please post a new fresh log so I can see if anything has changed. This log is clean, tho I have a question on one entry. Let me know if you are still getting the problem you describe and if so write down what else isn't working besides Explorer. Is Task Manager (Ctrl+Alt+Delete) telling you Explorer and whatever is not responding? The exact message you get will better help us to know what the problem might be.

I am running a Windows 2000 machine. When I look at my Task Manager Processes bar it shows a program called "Dmk7NbTS.exe" and "Apw21Xl1.exe". When I end these processes they relaunch other program files. These files are related to some sort of Internet pop-up, ad-ware software which I stupidly downloaded on my machine. I don't know how to get these files off. I would appreciate any help

A:Problems Ad-Aware and Spyhunter and Spybot aren't fixing

Read other 7 answers

I am running Windows XP Pro SP3. I updated both Ad-Aware & Spybot, after rebooting the first error I noticed was that I could access my home page but all links were 'greyed out'. If I try to copy/paste a link I received the error message "The requested look up key was not found in any active activation context".

The next error found I was unable to load Outlook. I received the error message "Unable to open your default email folders". Clicking 'Show Help' says "Error can occur if trying to run Outlook from a Terminal Server session when the OST file is in use by the console session. To access Outlook close the session and then Run mstsc.exe /CONSOLE". When I do that I am asked to log on to a remote desktop connection. I don't have a remote desktop connection.

The last problem found was a System Restore corruption. The window with the calendar does not show either months or dates, the page is blank.

I have checked a few old posts in this forum but have found nothing that accurately mirrors my problems. I did follow 1 piece of advice to check the Events Log. At the time the problems first occured the error was shown as DCOM Number 10010. This has been repeated many times since as I have tried to resolve the problem.

I am now at a loss to know what to do next and would be most grateful for any help to resolve these problems.

I've noticed my internet and computer in general has slowed down noticably. I've been running Spybot and Ad-aware, but I've found that they find problems even after running them over and over without me doing anything in between runs. Coincidence or not, after uninstalling SS&D, I'm now free to spread havic and pandemoneum across the 'net. I've seen debates here in the forums about which is better, Ad-aware or Spybot, for removing adware/spyware. Here is a pretty good review of them both at Flexbeta. There's a list of some of the applications that they installed and tested. I was amazed that there are some that I have used, that are supposed to stop some of what they are installing, ie, Panicware.

Thanks to Warp2Search for this info.

A:Ad-aware vs Spybot

SpyBot hands down is better because it detects everything that AdAware does and more, which makes using AdAware pretty pointless. Use SpyBot along with Hijackthis and you should be good to go. Those are the two best tools that I have found.

mvps.org is no longer recommending Spybot S&D (or Ad-Aware) due to poor testing results. See here - (scroll down and read under Freeware Antispyware Products). Further, most people don't understand how to use Spybot's TeaTimer and that feature can cause more problems than it's worth. TeaTimer monitors changes to certain critical keys in Windows registry but does not indicate if the change is normal or a modification made by a malware infection. The user must have an understanding of the registry and how TeaTimer works in order to make informed decisions to allow or deny the detected changes. If you don't have understanding how a particular security tool works, then you probably should not be using it. Additionally, TeaTimer may conflict with other security tools which do a much better job of protecting your computer and in some cases it will even prevent disinfection of malware by those tools. As for Ad-Aware.Ad-Aware...have gone into a downhill spiral over the past five years and recently sold the company to Solaria... I ran AA 6.0 for the first time this morning. It found 48 entries, wow I was thinking this really is an improved Tool. Turns out 39 of the entires AA 6.0 found were backup files I have stored in Spybot Recovery. Is this a common result of AA 6.0 finding Spybot backup files anyone may have come across? 8 entries were cookie files that I deleted and the last one was a Reg Key that I sent to the Ignored List. I then rebooted and ran AA 6.0 again. It found only 1 entry, unfortunately it was the same Reg Key that I sent to the Ignored list. I then ran Spybot to get a comparison. Spybot found 10 usage files and 0 spyware files.

To me the new AA 6.0 has alot of bells and whistles but the results are the same as AA 5.83 finding 1 file to every 10 that Spybot finds. Plus AA 6.0 takes about 10 mins to run compared to 2 mins for Spybot. Does anyone feel the same way I do?

Any feed back will be much appreciated.

This is getting ridiculous! I've already gotten rid of the mysearch and whazit toolbars last night but there don't seem to be any easy solutions to fixing this one. And, I do NOT have this "round icon in the taskbar" that I can supposedly right click on to uninstall. All of the ones there are completely familiar. Spybot and Ad-aware detected parts of it at first, then I guess cleaned up those parts, but the toolbar is still working after reboot. They aren't detecting anything now (Ad-Aware keeps crashing, however, so it hasn't finished a complete scan yet.)

-The affected browser is IE 6.0.28
-This toolbar is apparently called aieepdnzfnu.
-I'm running XP Home...I'm going to try a System Restore but I'm not sure that will fix this problem.

Also, does anyone know if Opera7 is vulnerable to this? I've been using it since to search for help, which often leads me to pages that Spybot warns me (when I'm using IE at least) are trying to install "c2.lop."

Then check out The Anti-Spyware Test Guide at URL by Eric Howes at URL:

During the tests, which pitted the top 20 anti-spyware scanners against spyware that comes embedded with peer-to-peer programs such as Grokster, Howes said he discovered that the malicious applications were capable of blocking the scanners.

"In the second and third group of tests, one of the installed programs prevented the anti-spyware scanners from running on reboot," he said, noting that reboots are a common method used by anti-spyware scanners to remove stubborn spyware and adware that remain in memory on a PC.

The results rated the Giant AntiSpyware detection tool as the best of the 20 scanners tested, but even then, Howes said the software detected only 100 out of 134 "critical" files and registry entries.

During the first round of tests, Howes found that McAfee's AntiSpyware rated very poorly, picking up only 56 of 134 critical detections. InterMute's SpySubtract (72/134), Aluria's Spyware Eliminator (42/134), Lavasoft's Ad-Aware (82/134) and the popular Spybot Search & Destroy (40/134) also scored very low on detecting "critical" files.

Looks like there is still some link to 108searchassistant still hanging around that was not removed by Spybot or AdAware. That message is just a nag screen that hopes you will reinstall it.

You may want to run HiJack This and post a log in the HJT forum. Instructions and download locations available there.

If you are using Internet Explorer suggest you do this:

In Internet Explorer go to Tools>Internet Options>Advanced and take the check mark from Enable Install On Demand (Internet Explorer) and Enable Install On Demand (Other). The consequence of this will be that you will begin to see Security Warnings when something tries to install on your computer. Unless it is something you want to install (which happens rarely) always say no.

Hello, I have been using vista on new computer, have made a search, and have not answered my questions. In my old XP days you recommended instaling and using AVG antivirus, ad aware, and spybot. As soon as my complimentary norton ran out, and wanted renuel, I removed it, and replaced with AVG free, and am using windows defender. Is this adequate, and if not what are present recomendations? Thank you in advance for your help.

A:spybot/ad aware?

For anti virus, I use AVG free on Vista, and so far havent had a prob. Seems to be one of the better ones to use Ad Aware and spybot are still, I think, some of th ebetter blockers; if yo uwant one, they are probably as good as anything else.
So yes, keep using them! Protection value is pretty high, but I would say do a manual sweep every so often, as some of th efunctionality on the free versions is disabled

Hi, How are you?

I am writing because I want to install a program that clean my system of all the spyware programs, but I have to decide between Ad-aware or spybot search and destroy, and I need some help because I don't know wich ones is better.

If somone could help me deciding, or if someone have a good recomendation of any other program, that could help me too.

A:Ad-aware vs Spybot

Normally people run both. Why do you have to decide between them?

Its not like antivirus or firewall software, which runs all the time in the background and means you should only have one of each running.

AdAware and SpyBot are only run when you start them. Then you close them afterwards.

I've heard that Spybot S&D, andAd-AwareSE are becoming ineffective. Also, they should be uninstalled and better programs
downloaded. Has anyone heard this to be true? If so, what
other programs are available. I have Win 98SE.

Good day to everyone. Have a friend that has a comp without internet access at this time. Would like to try to check for spyware-malware to make sure comp is clean before trying to get online. Is it possible for me to burn my copy of Ad-aware, and Spybot to a cd, and use it to check out his comp for spyware- malware? Just as an afterthought, could this also be done with AVG? If not with these programs, are there any I could put on a cd for this purpose. Thanks for your time.

Which is the best to run? Or do they each have aspects the other doesn't? Should I run both?

A:[Resolved] Ad-Aware or Spybot?

Most of the regulars around here run both. What one doesn't catch, the other does. Usually it's just a matter of who has the latest definitions.

I have a simple question to ask. How do I get Ad-aware and SpyBot to scan the WHOLE computer from one user account. Right now, I have to log onto each user, install Ad-aware and SpyBot, have it scan and then delete what the programs find.

I hope this makes sense.

A:Ad-aware and SpyBot Question

you cannot in XP

the hkcu entries are only available to the logged in user themselves no other accounts

you might be able to do it in safe mode from the default administrators account, but I'm not even sure that will work

Please download and run the following programs:

Close all browser windows, open cwshredder.exe then click "Fix" and let it run.

Then restart your computer.

IMPORTANT! To help prevent this from happening again, you should install all the Microsoft security patches and critical updates.

Then post another log please.

Hello Everyone!
I'm looking for some expert help. My computer slowed down drastically in the last day or two. So I updated my SpyBot, Ad-Aware and Norton 2004... ran all three... and all three came back with a long list of items that could not be fixed... even after a restart.
I was reading thru some of the threads here, and I would like some advice on what to do next.
Should I download and run that HijackThis thing? If so... what does the following instruction mean? "... make sure that you actually extract HijackThis to its own folder. DO NOT run it from within a zip manager (Winzip), as no backups will be saved."
I'm not too very computer literate, so please... "explain it to me like I was a six year-old".
Just in case... I have a Gateway computer with Windows ME.
Thanks to all!

Ad-Aware 2007 was installed on my home pc yesterday and Spybot was already on there. Spybot was not removed first. Now my cable modem looks like it's connected and according to my cable company, it is, but internet access does not happen. Also my wireless internet access isn't working. Did all the shutdown, unpluging of router and modem to no avail. Anyone have any ideas??

A:Ad-aware 2007 & Spybot

It should not matter that you had Spybot on your computer already seeing as most people (including myself) use both at the same time. I would try using the older version of Adaware Se instead of 2007 just because when I used it there were multiple bugs. Did you try playing with the router's settings?

Is Ad-Aware, Spybot, AVG, and Zonealarm a strong enough combination to keep my computer protected?

A:Ad-aware, Spybot, Avg, Zonelalarm

Seems like you've got the basics covered.

However, just so you have an idea, here is what I use:

Zone Alarm
Process guard (very good)
Win Patrol (should get this)
Spy Bot (teatimer on)
Spyware Blaster (you might consider this one as well)
Spyware guard
MS Anti-spyware
PrevX (works well with process guard)
Window washer (CCleaner works just as well)
Ewido (good for trojans)
Hijack This

Plus online scans: trend micro

I would suggest adding spyware blaster, and either win patrol or prevx and running CCleaner every now and then helps too.

Hard to believe we need so many programs just to stay safe.
