X201: Roll cage(s) or not?

Q: X201: Roll cage(s) or not?

Can anyone give a definitive answer as to whether or not the X201 has a top or top and bottom roll cage? The current tabook states:Compared to the X201, the X201s has ..., and roll cage in display cover. The tabook makes no mention of a roll cage for the X201, so together the implication is clear: the X201 has no roll cage. Except most of the reviews of the X201 (specifically not the X201s) claim it does have a roll cage (some say top and bottom). And on Lenovo's website, it states here:Next-generation ThinkPad roll cage on X201, X201s, X301 and X200s Note the inclusion of the X201 in the list. So, which is it? Yes, or no? And top and bottom, or just top? Thanks!

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I would like to add more hard drives into my computer, but the "drive cage" only docks spaces for 2 hard drives in the HPE-270f. There is addition space below the blu-ray drive that hold's a 3rd HD which I am already using. There is space for 2 more HD's if the cage was expanded or if a bigger cage for my model is available that can house 3-4 HD's instead of only two. Are there HD cages (caddy) that are made for my model computer that can do so? Or are there caddy addons that will allow me to attach them to my existing one?You can see images of the HD cage being pulled out here and how there is plenty of space above/next to it for more: http://support.hp.com/us-en/document/c01882178

Hi all, My church has an old HP Elite e9180f desktop computer. They said that it is running out of space on the SSD, which someone installed sometime in the past. Basically it has an 80gb SSD + the original 1Tb HDD. They asked me if I could swap the SSD for a larger sized one. I've done that type of stuff dozens of times so said, it souldn't be an issue. Here's the thing. I cracked the case and the there's only one HDD visible within the traditional HDD cage (in the lower left corner of the machine if you're looking through the open side). I cannot, for the life of me, see any type of SSD easily visible within the open machine. Does anyone know if there's a small recess somewhere, where the person night have stuffed a small SSD? Unfortunately, that model of computer won't allow me to open the other side of the machine (either that, or it's not really obvious), so I can't see if it's tucked back there. Hoping someone else out there might've installed an SSD somewhere other than the cage, and might be able to share their wisdom. Thanks! Robert

I am planning on using an ATX power supply for a RAID cage with it shorted to the "on" position.

Is there a rule of thumb for how much wattage each hard drive consumes, so that I do not underpower the RAID cage? I had heard 25 watts per drive, but I would assume there are further 5V and 12V amperage requirements the PSU must be able to supply, since it can't direct all its wattage just to what the hard drives need. Any help is appreciated.

The cage would be expected to support 10-20 drives. And 20 would be an outside number, for sure.

Thanks.

Hi guys,
I have a problem, my computers PC Fan gave out, its an old PC Dell Precision 760
The PC Fan not the CPU Fan gave out it is connect to the Motherboard to 5 pin connector...the seems to connect only to 4 pins.

The thing is a bought a cheap Fan that connects to the PCs power supply directly and is working perfectly.
There is no option that I see for the MB to ignore the onboard FAN connector. So everytime the PC starts it says there is no Cage Fan to continue press F1, if not F2 to go to Setup.

There is nothing in the BIOS, I have put to ignore all errors....

I need a solution because the person who uses the computer is not happy with the constante need for pressing F1.

Any solutions? can I put some jumpers on the pins? Trick?

A:No Cage Fan click F1 to continue...

I had the same problem on a Dell a couple of years ago except it was a thing about something on the front panel. I have forgotten exactly what it was. We saw no solution for it short of buying a new case so the owner is still pressing F1.

This problem never showed before but after a recent cleaning for the case, it started to occur.
Reading about it, it was said that it's related to motherboard and monitoring the fan, however, a game which I used to run flawlessly suddenly started to have an ugly fps drops and I started to wonder could that warning be the reason and if yes, how to solve it.

There may not be a simple solution for my problem but I'll submit this anyway.  Perhaps someone else has attempted this -----------
I have a new XPS 8900 and installed a Hot-Swap Cage in the upper optical-drive slot.  This cage is an IStarUSA BPN-DE110SS.  Installation was straightforward and the device operates fine.  I've exercised it for almost an hour by inserting different HDDs,  It works very well.
BUT !!! --- after reattaching the front bezel I encountered a clearance problem.  There is not enough vertical clearance to open the cage-door.  The bottom of the cage-door is obstructed by the lower section of the bezel... the portion containing the flip-down "door".
I may eventually decide to trim that section of the bezel --- removing the "door" and some of the lower plastic.  Before I do that --- and make a permanent (unsightly) modification, can anyone offer alternatives?
BTW - I intend to use this cage for multiple-generation BACKUP purposes... rotating numerous HDDs.  This seems like good approach since the cage will operate with SATA-speeds.  I have previously placed these HDDs into external docking stations using slower USB-speeds.
So... any thoughts ????

I have a question on the best power supply for a JBOD cage holding a dozen hard drives. It seems that many power supplies dedicate, at most, one rail for hard drives. I don't want to go down the spinup/MAID/power up on standby road, since about every raid controller out there is different, as are most hard drives and how they react to those commands.

My question is this - if I want a power supply for a JBOD cage, what's my best bet? It seems as though most PS's dedicate much of their output to the PCIe connectors. I have no use for that, obviously. Is there a way one can recover at least one of the rails, such as tapping the 5V and 12V on the 20/24 pin ATX connector and making a custom 4-pin Molex harness off of that?

Can one tap the 12V rails on the PCIe connectors and splice in the 5V supply from the ATX connector to recover some more 12V current capacity? I assume that there is a single 5V rail that feeds everything coming out of the PS since I've never run across a PS with 2X/3X/4X 5V rails. Any thoughts are appreciated. Thank you.

A:Best power supply for JBOD cage?

Are you trying to use a lower end powered power supply with limited numbers of connectors? It seems to me you could use adapters to convert unused SATA power connectors to Molex connectors. Of course, you would need a power supply that had enough total connectors (both molex and SATA) to power all those HDDs. Perhaps judicious use of splitters might add a few extra molex connectors needed.

I am upgrading an Inspiron 620 to Windows 10.  I choose to do the upgrade on a new hard drive to preserve the original hard drive as a backup.  When I attempted to remove the hard drive from its mounting following the instructions (remove two screws and pull) I could not get it to come out of the cage.  Something appears to be holding the hard drive securely in the cage.  I removed the two screws that mount the hardware to the hard drive with no success.  Currently I plan to install the new hard drive in the tower leaving the old hard drive unpowered but would like to remove it to place it in an external USB case.
Any ideas as to what might be locking the hard drive in the case would be appreciated.
Thanks in advance.

A:Inspiron 620 Hard Drive Stuck in cage

Its a super tight fit.  What you do is get a pair of pliers and squeeze the ears of the rails inward and it will slide out like nothing was ever wrong. (I am assuming you removed BOTH screws BEFORE trying to bend the ears) Using both hands and standing on the case and pulling wont get it out.  I considered smashing the drive with a sledge but decided against that.

Hi-

I am currently in the process of building a large storage machine. In my research, I have found no answer to this question:

Can I use multiple SATA raid cages on one array on one raid card?

As far as I know, all the different cages use 1 serial cable per drive, so a 3 drive cage would have 3 single cables to the raid card, a 4 drive cage would have 4. My question is whether or not I can have 2 separate cages in 1 machine and have them run the total number of drives as 1 array on 1 raid card.

thank you for taking the time to help me with this, here are the specs of the build, which will commence in about a week:

Tyan S2882G3NR-D dual core server board
Dual opteron 242
2gig ddr3200
6-8 WD 250Gig sata drives -> 1TB-1.5TB (raid5+hot spare)
ROCKETRAID2220 8 port running raid5

Cheers,
Chris

A:Raid cage/SATA backplane question

The cage is just something to hold the drives together. From the controller point of view it's all just a bunch of single drives and it doesn't matter if you have spread them out over one, two or five enclosures.

Have you considered using SCSI? You would get a much more sensible system (for a price of course).

Hi Guys,

My computer's case/tower doesn't have an more cages for a new HDD, so I was thinking of this solution. I take one of those DIY HDD Enclosures for 3.5 Sata HDDs, but basically just leave it without the connectors and backpanel (where the SATA and power are converted to USB and AC inputs/outputs).

I then just plugin the SATA and DC Power from the PSU directly and secure the enclosure to the bottom of my case using some adhesive.

Would this be a good idea? I don't like having an external drive, and using a USB 2.0 is a bit slower than using SATA direct. Let's not even talk about the convenience of having one less AC Adapter to think about.

Would this be a viable option? I got the idea from one of my friends who just tapes his SDD to the inside of his case. Given that mine is NOT an SDD, I thought it would need a cage/enclosure to keep it stable.

Any Feedback?

A:Using DIY HDD Enclosure w/o AC/USB inside Case as extra cage.. good idea?

Check the drive cage that is already in the computer.
You may be able to temporarily remove the drive that is in there
and flip your a other drive over and mount it to the bottom of the cage.
Then reinstall the first drive.
Drives usually have mounting holes on the side and the bottom

Hi,one reason of issue might be the frequencies of new RAM sticks and CPU i5-520M in your laptop. That processor supports DDR3-800/1066 memory types only. Who knows how SPD feature on the stick regulates the work on lower frequency. Another reasons might be the RAM sticks CAS latency and timings. There is a chance the new memory is too fast for x201. Look at the such parameters of Samsung stick (in CPU-Z, for example).

It turns out, however, that the ssd I have, which is crucial mx300 has two metal parts sticking out that make it impossible to insert the disk. Can anything be done about it at all or will I need a new ssd for x230?Would x220 be incompatible with the ssd, too?

Hi All, Have one of these PSUs (20Vdc round connector), and it has stopped working, and the module rattles when shaken. Can anyone advise how to access, so I can see if simple fix, or need to purchase a replacement... Doesn't appear to be any obvious access (screws under voltage label, etc.)  Thanks, Dave
