Preferred Solution: Drive Opening Problem & Folder Option Problem

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

A:folder option problem

First (to rule things out), make sure you have "display the contents of system folders" and "show hidden files and folders" checked, and "hide protected operating system files" UNchecked.

Someone had a malware that made hidden and superhidden file settings unavailable a
few months back. I ended up digging out the registry keys and writing a registry script for him.
If you're still experiencing the problem, try the registry script in the other thread.

I have a strange problem on win xp SP3. I check the: tools-folder options-'hide extensions for known file types' and 3 or 4 times a day, without a restart or logoff/logon, windows folders will start showing all file extensions. The time intervals are random. I have bitdefender as antivirus. Is this possibly a 'security' measure taken by windows or my antivirus? Thanks

I am having problems with my comp. I got a virus from somewhere, i don't know. I then went in to safe mode and scanned my comp using AVG. I got some infections and they were moved to quarantine. I then formatted my comp to be sure that no viruses were left behind. Now after formatting, i still have 2 problems:

1. Whenever i click on any drive in my computer, it opens in a new window.

2. When i goto my computer-tools-folder options-view and when i uncheck Do not show hidden files and folders and after clicking on OK, it again cheks that option. I tried many times and as soon as i click ok, it again checks the option, and hidden files are not shown.

Please help me, i really need to get rid of this and want my comp to behave normally.

Waiting for replies.....

Thanking you.

Folders typically don't show sizes. Only the files do. It sounds like what you are seeing is normal. I'm not aware of any way to show a folder size in the SIZE column unless you use third-party software. Try this: http://foldersize.sourceforge.net/

I have a problem in retrieving files and folders that I hid. Folders and files are still hidden even after I clicked the radio button in front of show hidden files and folders in the view menu under folder option window. I suspect that this is due to the same virus which has infected already also causing drives to disolay "open with" window when double clicked it. I was opening my drives through Windows explorer instead. But I still need the double click option. Is there a way to remove this virus and to get my PC back to the original healthy state. Unfortunately I have not created a restore point recently. It would be a great help if somebody can supply a solution for this.

A:Problem in Hidden Folder option

If you have a virus, scan with your AV and remove it. Use another online scan, just to be sure, like TrendMicro. And since most bad guys are not viruses, you also need to scan with at least 2 anti-malware programs.

Free anti-malware scanners:
Spybot S&D
Ad-Aware 2007
Spyware Eliminator
Emco Malware Destroyer
Spyware Doctor
Arovax Anti-spyware
Trend-Micro Rootkit Buster
F-Secure Blacklight
Bootzilla (Bootable anti-malware CD with many other tools.)

If I just select "Stay Offline", it opens the folder and displays the files fine.
I thought it may be a setting in the "desktop.ini" file that is present in so many folders designating the background for each folder, but there is no desktop.ini file in some of the folders.

I specifically signed up here because this problem is absolutely driving me crazy. I'll try to explain the best I can.

Ok, here's the problem, when I double-click any folder, this is what I see:

as you can see, it opens in a search type folder where it automatically opens the folder panel thing.

This is what it used to look like:

and I'm pretty sure that's what it's supposed to look like. And it's at least what I still want.

From my ventures on trying to figure this out, I only go as far as to realize I think this is the problem:

i'm almost positive they should be reversed. When I double click a folder, it should be doing the "open" command, not the "explore." I learned of a way to change these by opening any explorer window then clicking Tools --> Folder Options --> File Types --> go down to (NONE) File Folder --> then click Advanced towards the bottom and there should be an option in the little box that pops up that says "open" but I'm only getting an "explore" one.

I can't really explain anymore, I'm really lost when it comes to all this stuff deep in computers. I just hope someone here can help.

A:Opening a folder problem

"Explore" is open. When you want to see the contents of a file using WIndows Explorer you explore it. Ok say you have a CD in the drive if you click "open" it will start what ever the cd is supposed to do, but if you click "explore" then you can see the contents of the CD. Make since or did I confuse you more??? I do that sometimes...

A:problem opening a folder

did you mean opening a file? a folder doesn't need a specific program to open, a file is the one that needs different programs to open. if it is a file, then you need to find the correct program that will open that type of file. you know this by checking the extension of the file, something after the .???, eg. .mp4 for video file, .txt for text file. after noting the extension, you can search the web for the associated program to open it and make the program the default one used to open that file. then windows will know what program to be used directly without asking again.

In my External Hard-Drive I have a folder which I have named 'Music Video's'. I'm having problems accessing this folder.
When I go to the folder and double-click or right-click then choose 'Open' the folder opens but there is nothing there, no files, despite the fact that if I go to Properties it shows 69 files therein.
When I try to close the folder the screen locks-up/freezes and then I have to use the Task Manager to force it to close or the 'End Now' option.
Some files show up during a search but the folder will not open when I choose 'Open Containing Folder' instead the screen locks-up.
Some files will not even show up in the search despite the fact that I know that they are there and if I search for those ones even the search freezes/locks-up.
Is there a way to unlock/open this folder ?

I transferred all my stuff to a new PC including folder lock 5.2.6, as a result which was my doing I have maybe 3 copies on the PC , for some reason evrytime I try and get it to operate in stealth mode it tells me there is another version operating in stealth mode and to uninstall that version first. When I try the hotkey it does not locate folder lock. I have located all the versions (I think) by using the run command and also the c:\windows prefetch for other parts of the programme.
I am led to believe that if I just deleted everything and then started from scratch I would have even greater problems, as `bits` would be left all over the palce and maybe prevent me from loading a fresh copy.
I can use one of the copies but not in stealth mode. I am using winXP sp2.
From what I can remember there is nothing of note saved on any of the versions as I emptied the locker prior to transferring.

Any help appreciated.

Ok, So, i have four computers one is XP Pro, two are windows 7 and one is Vista. In my XP machine i have a master drive and I also have a slave drive. I would like to share my slave drive (as i have always done) so i can access it from any computer on my LAN. Now, I can map the drive with the windows 7 machines so i know it works and i know its shared correctly with the correct permissions and double click to access it.

When I map this drive in Vista it does add the drive under "network locations" section under my computer. However, i cannot double click to open it. The only way i can open it is to right click and hit explore/open and it works. I would like to create a desktop shortcut to this. When i double click it does not give me any errors, it just sits there; helplessly.

Now, for just fun and games. I created another folder on this XP machine and shared it, and i was able to map to it AND double click to open it. So... i don't know what the difference is other than one is a folder on the C: and the other is an actual HDD.

I have done quite a bit of research and most said to look for autorun.ini (and inf, .exe) in the root folder of the slave drive. Non there. I have ran malware and viral scans on the slave drive and both primary drives. (xp and vista machine). I have disconnected and reconnected this network drive probably 200 times. I have tried to manually make a shortcut (right click > shortcut > path > etc) and it does the same. I have no othe... Read more

Hi guys,

I need your help please...

I have a 2 different drives C & D (both ntfs) on my laptop. D is mainly used for back-up (family pics, important files etc...) in case C needs a re-install (winxp pro)!

Anyway, I have a personal login (with password as administrator), but I also have a guest login enabled (w/no pass) in case friends want to use my laptop.

The issue is when a friends log in they're able to see all my drives and folders!!! I want to make D private, but under sharing the option to make it private is grayed out!

Can you please help?

Thanks in advc!

A:[SOLVED] Drive or folder private option grayed out!

You cannot make a drive private, You can only make a folder Private and it must be under your User Name under C:\Documents and Settings\YourUserName (ex) My Documents, My Music etc. Then the Private check box will be available.
You can Encrypt folders outside of your user profile name in XP, but not a whole drive, without 3rd party software. You can encrypt an External drive using Windows 7 and and it will remain encrypted in XP, but you can't change any of the files until you return it to Windows 7.

It's rare for a problem to have no easily-observable cause, but I have no idea what's causing this issue so forgive me if this is the wrong forum area to post it.

Recently, when I go to open applications that are supposed to direct me to a web page, my computer opens the page in Microsoft Office Word instead with broken hyperlinks. I know for a fact that these applications shouldn't open this way since I have been successfully directed via my browser (Firefox) before.

Avast! found no viruses, Windows is up to date, and I just cleaned out my registry so I don't think any of those are issues.

It's quite irritating to be shown a non-functional word document when I am supposed to be directed to a web page, so any help would be appreciated.

I have 3 hard drives. One my D drive which is 160gb(This is the only partition, 1 big 160gb partition, no other partitions on drive), there is a folder called Files, that contains all my songs. I used windows file transfer wizard to transfer onto laptop so i had good backup and i burned them onto a dvd. Then oddly the whole hard drive was gone, so i had some partition recovery software which i used in a snap.

Then when it loaded back all my movies that were on the hard drive were there ( all 120) but my song folder ( D:\Files) was behaving oddly, first it would take 5 minutes to open and only to show songs a-c on there. So i re started my computer to see if it would fix it oddly enough, nope windows made me sit and wait for chkdsk to do its magic, so i waited but it didnt do anything only display segment XXXX unreadable for almost the whole time but it deleted a few extra things here and there.

So i made another folder called songs on my D drive and copied some songs i left it on cuz it said it would take 120 min but after a few it said cyclic redunduncy check and stopped.
then i tried to delete folder and it said its corrupt or unreadable

Then it wouldnt work at all so i opened up CMD and tried to CD into the directory files and it said Data Error ( Cyclic redunduncy check) and for the songs directory it cd'd into it but when i tried to do anything windows said to run chkdsk, i ran chkdsk and it didnt do anything at all.

I have a serious problem right now. My USB flash drive was full, so i used the "Portable Applications" zip program to compress it so i could fit more space in it until i could get my home computer fixed (I just fixed a problem with a corrupted password). Now it won't extract the file, or even fix it. It keeps sayin, "Please insert Last of the Multi-Volume Disc Set Now" and i don't have any discs....what's it talking about???!!!

This thing has EVERYTHING i've been working on in the past few months. I NEED these files back. We are working in a closed security system, meaning that everything we do or look at or click on is stored in a memory system, so nothing is really deleted. Anyways, what happened was we worked around it and we deleted the cookies and everything AFTER we (when i say we i mean my friend lol, don't know why i say we) had compressed the file (everything was all put into one folder and compressed-about 500 MB compressed into 322 MB). Well, now it won't do ANYTHING.

I gotta say, I love the new SSD. Everything is working great, except for one strange thing.

I have my User folder on a secondary spinning drive, and it's working well, except for my Downloads folder. Every time I click on the Downloads folder in Explorer, there is a huge lag while Windows figures out what's in the folder. You can see the green bar moving to the right like it's searching, then the contents will appear.

My Documents folder doesn't do this. The contents load right away, but the difference is that folder is in a library. I've turned on all of the indexing functions I can think of, but still there is a big lag when opening that folder. This didn't happen when my User folder was on the system drive, even when that one was a spinning drive.

Any ideas? Thanks in advance.

A:New SSD, Problem with User folder on spinning drive.

If you have a load of crap in the folder it takes a while for the icons to render it does that on mine. Am not sure why it suddenly lags unlike your old one. Delete everything in it or move the downloads location.

I am using Win XP SP2 on an Athlon dual core processor machine. When I open My Computer and then open the C: folder I get a Data Excecution Prevention error listing Windows Explorer as the program it wants to close. This happens even though I have just booted the system and have not yet started Windows Explorer.
This error is preventing me from accessing any of the folders on my main drive (C:). I can access all other hard drives on the system with no problem. Drive C: is the only drive affected. When I access the Security folder under the control panel, I do not see DEP listed so am unable to try to turn it on or off to see if that has any affect. This problem appeared about a month ago and I don't remember what I might have done to cause the problem. Could Memory modules cause this? I might have swapped the two modules that I have. I understand that DEP is only available on Win XP SP2 and that I should be able to turn it on or off if my hardware processor supports this feature. Because I do not see DEP under the Security Option of the control panel, it seems to me that DEP should not even be active on my machine.

On my desktop, I have my pictures folder mapped to an external harddrive. The pictures icon still shows under This PC, which is where I want it.

I have a new laptop, also with Windows 8.1, and I'm trying for the same setup. However, when I try to set it up I can only get the icon to show in the library and not under My PC. When I try to work it to show under My PC, I get a message saying the files need to be indexed. I have tried to index them but I haven't been able to. Network files don't show as an option for indexing.

Any ideas?

Nevermind. It resolved itself after a reboot.

hello fellow techies out there,

I have been working on rigs and programming for quite sometime and this is the first time have i EVER i mean EVER experienced this problem. My rig was currently running SP3 and never gave me any problems for a year up until now.

The folder options has disappeared, that's not the only thing so has the search option under start, and when external drives are plugged in it is showing up, but you are not able to access the drive it self; the driving is showing as an application.

So i rebooted the computer 3 times already and same problem as occured all 3 times. And the thing is also, when going into safe mode and going into the administrators account I am able to see the folder options, but after opening it once it then again disappears, so does the search option and then nor do my external drives work, but are appearing as drives.

This is really starting to frustrate me because I really don't know for once what to do. I don't know if it's the hard drive or it's a virus, worm, etc. I JUST DON'T KNOW! if anyone out there can help me please do! I am in dire need of help for this problem which is hindering me from working proficiently on my computer. THANKS!

A:SERIOUS Folder options, search, and ext. drive accessibility problem!

hmm nice one , best gues this time would be that somehow the register got damaged

scan before use , if it contains anything just delete it the program is regtick,
it is a program that lets you setup the register for security reasons , set it up what a "user " is allowed to do or not to do ,

this involved numerous " hiding " options

get this software and check if stuff is hidden yes or no .

, also the "explorer.exe is used to display data "
could you check
start - run then type eventvwr and press enter
the check the system option if there are any errors displayed in the tab if so let us hear the info

hope this helps a bit .

I have been getting BSOD crash whenever I try to open any folder. The same folder can be opened with 7-zip file manager. There has been no recent updates of drivers or Windows. The BSOD shows a Service exception and win32k.sys as the malfunctioned file. I have attached the crash report as per your guidelines. Kindly help!!

Edit 1: I checked the .zip file and found it empty even after running the dm log collector I, the .zip file remains empty, thus I have manually compressed the temp folder SFdebugFiles and attached it.

I am having some crazy issues with my computer. I had a plethora of BSOD's which led up to my computer crashing completely. I reinstalled windows by deleting the partition and putting it back on fresh and new but had to do it twice since the first time didn't work.

The first time gave me hell after I tried to drag my saved music files for itunes onto my new desktop. This led to the Explorer restart issue which was so bad that I just reinstalled the system again. I have had the system up and running and everything seems OK (lag in speed since I took out two of my 2 GB memory sticks after thinking they might have been the problem-PNY is sending me replacements) but now I am noticing that I am getting the EXPLORER HAS SHUT DOWN error when trying to open my folders on my Iomega drive. I have done a scan disc on this hard drive and it is totally free of errors. No errors have been found. The External drive is only about 7 months old. I have scanned it for viruses with AVG Internet Security 2012 and it has no viruses to my knowledge.

What can I do to save this drive??? I have almost 1.3 gb of important stuff on it!!! Help!!! I am not very computer savvy so this is really mentally exhausting and frustrating. I am thinking of getting a new system but I am scared something is up with the external drive that might ruin my NEW system once I try and put it on there.

ALSO, I should mention that my external drive folders open fine on my laptop...so, that has to mean something right? H... Read more

In windows xp you can change the folder type e.g. documents,, pictures, videos, music by right-clicking and clicking the customize tab.
So i started up my PC and when i click into C Drive i see that the actual C Drive has been treated as a folder and the settings have been changed so the C Drive and all subfolders (which means every folder) are being treated as a picture folder.
This is incredibly annoying. I ended just saying apply all document folder type to all subfolders but the C Drive is still treated as a picture type, Which is weird because you cant change the settings of the C Drive like you can with folders.
Anyways i ended up changing every folder as a document type folder. The next day i start up my pc and every folder including the whole C Drive have been treated as a picture type folder!!!
Any ways to fix this???
I do not want to format the PC. I was hoping maybe some registry deleting or some other program could fix this. Thx in advance

My laptop had been infected by the Brontok.C worm and i already get rid of it... but i found out that this worm had also take my Folder Option in the Tools option at the toolbar gone with it.. how can i restore it back?.. as there is many hidden files in my laptop that i couldnt reveal anymore...help me

A:The 'folder Option' In The Tools Option Dissappear!

Are you comfortable with making edits in the registry? Back up your registry FIRST!
Under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer

the "NoFolderOptions" should have a value of =dword:00000000

My guess is yours has a value of =dword:00000001

I have two partitions on my SATA 320gb hard drive. When I open "My computer" and want to open drive C, I just double click the drive letter and drive opens up, as it suppose to. But when I want to open another partition on the same drive, I double click that drive's letter and get this error massage:
Windows cannot find 'RECYCLER\S-9-9-60-100001759-10002463-3464.com'. make sure you typed the name correctly, and then try again. To search for a file, click the Start button, and then click Search.
Then in order to open this drive I click drive letter with the right mouse button and click Explore. The drive opens up as it suppose to.
Does anybody know how to fix this problem? Any input will be greatly appreciated

Hi guys

Just to get it out of the way, I have already searched the forum for help (and the web),
and I already found a thread in here explaining what to do
write techspot.com in front of /vb/all/windows/t-5750-Access-denied-to-a-folder-merged-with-Partition-Magic.html
(i can't post links because i'm new here)

But, I can't find the freakin' security settings in Partition Magic

I've been looking through them all "general, view, disk, tools and so on"
but anything saying security I cannot find.
Is it me or my partition magic that retarded :-S

I have to admit it's a craked version, but it didn't complain about anything when I typed the serial just -
"thanks for using partition magic and so on"

When I try to access the merged folder this is what comes up
F:\g is not accessible. Access denied.
The same thing a unformattede harddrive would say.
So is it still a security thing?
Or is it my partion magic that needs changing?

Please forgive my newbi-ways

i'm using XP home edition (from dell) if that helps

A:Folder problem with Partition Magic, can't open merged files/folder.

Although your issue may be easily resolved

TechSpot cannot help with cracked software - as the cracked software may be faulty itself.
Let alone the legal issues
