Wifi connects, but no Internet

Q: Wifi connects, but no Internet

Hi,

I could not get my brother's Asus A6 to connect to Internet via wireless router (wired or wifi through wireless router does not work; DSL modem to Asus ethernet works).

I'm able to connect to Internet through my Sony VAIO (wired or Wifi through wireless router).

Configuration: phoneline > DSL modem > Netgear wireless router

Brother's Asus runs Win XP, using the XP's wireless (not Asus wireless driver). Currently using Windows Zero Configuration http://paininthetech.com/2005/10/25/disable-wireless-zero-configuration-in-windows-xp/ .

Here's the ipconfig all (both wifi and ethernet connected to wireless router) which I learned from http://forums.techguy.org/web-email/468829-wireless-connected-but-no-internet.html :

Preferred Solution: Wifi connects, but no Internet

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

A: Wifi connects, but no Internet

So when its on the wired connection it works?
1st off I see a few things..
1 the wired connection has a manuel IP address setup.
2 The Gateway that the wireless is getting has got to be wrong. 1.1.1.0 would be a network not a node.

Try setting a static IP address for the wireless card and see if that helps.

My laptop connects to my home router and shows connection to the Internet, but the only program that connects is Windows Update. My browsers - Firefox, Pale Moon, IE, Chrome, & Comodo Dragon - all are unable to connect. None of my other updatable programs can connect either (security programs, driver updaters, etc. I am sending this from my desktop).
I run Win7 Home Premium SP3 on an HP G-60. The router is a Netgear N600.
We have Optimum Online, but I had the same problem with FiOS.
My home wifi works fine with our tablets and smartphones. My router supports 802.11g and n, as does the laptop. They connect over n.
I ran all the tools available via the Control Panel to no effect.
I used to use Comodo Firewall but tech support at my school required me to remove it and use only Windows Firewall. I went into the firewall settings and set permission for all browsers and other programs with no effect.
Back when my antimalware programs were up to date, scans showed no problems.
I have run out of good ideas. Please help.

Hello,

I have an HP Pavilion g7-2233cl Laptop running Windows 8. I bought it new (refurbished) about a year and a half ago.

Until recently, I’ve had no problem connecting to the Internet via WiFi. But recently, although everything says I’m connected to our home WiFi and things are working swimmingly, I cannot access anything on the Internet. I get messages like “Unable to connect” or “Cannot show this page.”

We have other computers on the same WiFi, and none of them are having a problem.

I’ve tried several remedies based on tips I’ve seen on the Internet (using a different computer, of course). For example, I:

Deleted all the temp files.

Flushed a bunch of stuff using the Admin. Command Prompt:
ipconfig /flushdns
nbtstat –R
nbtstat –RR
netsh int ip reset c:\resetlog.txt
netsh winsock reset

Disabled Webroot.

Connected to the router via an ethernet cable.

Tried System Restore to about a month earlier.

Nothing helped.

Any suggestions?
Bill

I've been dealing with this issue for a couple years and it's driving me crazy. Everything in my house connects to my main wifi signal without issues. My laptop however connects to the signal but I cannot get internet or see any devices. I always have to be on my guest network with my laptop. I've tried resetting my router, updating the firmware in the router, renaming the main wifi signal, resetting my wireless network adapter on my laptop, updating the the network adapter firmware in my laptop, and reinstalling the network adapter. I have no idea what else to try but I'm fed up not being able to use my laptop to simply print to my wireless printer or setup various electronics with my laptop. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thank you

Hi, My notebook connects to the wifi (BT hub) just fine, but after some time (could be anywhere between 2 mins and a couple of hours) the yellow warning triangle appears over the wifi connection icon in the bottom right which states "no internet access". When this happens, the other devices in the house are still connected with internet access. the only way to fix it is to restart my notebook, sometimes this works, sometimes it doesn't in which case I restart it again until it works. If I connect by ethernet, it is fine. I have updated wireless card driver, and tried all of the broadcast channels auto, 1, 6 & 11 but the same thing happens. Any ideas??? Thanks Andy

I understand your new system is having some Internet issues. When it is connected to the wifi, is it obtaining DHCP information from the router? This can be obtained by going to the command prompt and entering ipconfig. You mentioned other PCs work fine. Are any of them also running Windows 7? Has the router's firmware been updated? A router firmware issue can cause some devices not to work properly while others do work fine.

My laptop connects to all wifi networks and connects to them, but then stays set as local and doesn't actually go to internet and allow me to go online as normal.

I've tried many different wifi networks, the laptop connects to the local library's wifi and goes to internet (usually) but on every other network I try (tried about 5 others around town and home) it stays set to local, meaning it doesn't go to internet.

I have tried to Google the problem but it doesn't really make much sense to me.

Any ideas on how to fix this so my laptop can go on the internet on other wifi networks?

A:WIFI connects but unable to open Internet

When the connection appears to be good but you can't get the browser to go anywhere it usually has to do with winsock being messed up or the TCP/ip stack isn't right.

Try running this batch file which will reset winsock, reset the TCP/IP stack and release renew your IP.

If the connection works at home but not on the road it could be a DNS problem or your A/V software or firewall is somehow blocking the connection.

Download Renew IP + Reset Winsock Batch File

I have a new laptop with Windows 7 64 bit pre-installed.

The symptoms are that it won't connect wirelessly to my router at home, but will connect with a wire to the same router, and furthermore it will also connect either wired or wirelessly to the network at my office (this is an unsecured wifi network). I never have any problems at work, only at home, and only then with wifi - wired connection works fine.

I did an IP config thingy and got this..... I hope someone can help. Thanks in advance.

Welcome to Seven Forums,

Try refreshing your wireless network profiles by removing all of them then just add your own SSID (wireless network).
Wireless Network - Remove

If that didn't help, you may changing your wireless security (WEP, WPA or WPA2), make sure that you are on WPA2, it's the safest and most secured.

Hi All,

Have tried to figure this out from a few posts here but my situation always ends up different. I have an i-mac that i have no troubles with, it connects via WiFi or a wired connection, with which I am using to post this. I also have a fairly crappy asus netbook with windows xp that i really just want to muck around with. It connects to my wireless network fine with great signal and what not but will not connect to the internet.

What I have tried : going into command prompt to ping. I can ping my computers IP address with no problems (not sure if this even means anything just saw it on another post) but there is no Default Gateway displayed when i >IPCONFIG /ALL. Im wondering if this may have something to do with it as I saw a suggestion to PING the default gateway in another post.

dont know if im heading in the right direction or not? any help from anyone that knows what they're doing would be much appreciated.

Cheers.

Hi,

Bought a new laptop (SAMSUNG N150 plus) tonight, go to connect it to my wireless network...which it does. But it's not connected to the internet, what's up with that? The windows diagnostic mentioned something about my configuration was fine, but the device couldn't connect to www.microsoft.com

I've looked in device manager but nothing is flagged up so I dunno why it's not connecting, the Ethernet adapter thing is a 'Marvell Yukon 88e8040' but I can't find drivers or anything for it, to update the drivers so i'm stuck?

I've had 2 other laptops that just connect fine, why wouldn't this connect?

No idea what to do.......

I've googled some and some people are saying go into the TCP options and ****, but this should be out the box connecting. I doubt Berbera, 55 who's bought a new laptop for jim isn't going to be diving into device manager looking at her ethernet options.

What gives, why not net?!

Hi.May we see:
Try these simple tests.

Hold the Windows key and press R, then type CMD (COMMAND for W98/WME) to open a command prompt:

In the command prompt window that opens, type type the following commands one at a time, followed by the Enter key:

NOTE: For the items below surrounded with < >, see comments below for the actual information content, they are value substitutions from the previous IPCONFIG command output! Do NOT type <computer_IP_address> into the command, that won't work. Also, the < and > in the text is to identify the parameters, they are also NOT used in the actual commands.

Do NOT include the <> either, they're just to identify the values for substitution.

Right click in the command window and choose Select All, then hit Enter to copy the contents to the clipboard.
Paste the results in a message here.

I am trying to connect to the WiFi network provided by my hotel (relocating for work, will be using this connection for ~2 weeks).
I have a Belkin G Wireless USB adapter attached to my XP machine, and it recognizes, acquires address, and reports an "excellent" connection to the WiFi Network. No further data is received from the network despite this connection. The Belkin adapter interface warning message states "There is no connection to the internet"... despite being connected to the network.
I know the network is operational... I can download content onto my iPhone. I use IPCONFIG and attempt to ping my default gateway, but get "request timed out". In addition, the device manager has no problem with the wireless adapter ("working properly"), with no warning flags.

So basically I've narrowed it down to some setting on my computer, since the network is working (via iPhone) and the adapter is working (connected, excellent strength, no problem in device manager)... Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

I found that I am not the isolated case on website. I tried to remove and stop the updates. However, once I connect to internet, the blue screen comes again.

Is the problem because of the network adaptor? The model is Qualcomm Atheros AR9002WB
Can the problem be solved if I download new driver from Qualcomm Atheros website?? Or if I replace a new adaptor??

I've read through hundreds of posts trying to figure out my issue. Unfortunately, I've been unsuccessful.

Here's the issue, I was given a new laptop for work and it connects fine to our secure wireless network at the office, but when I brought it home it will not connect to my wireless network at home.

When I try to connect to my network at home the wireless manager sits and spins saying "trying to acquire network address". I have 2 iPhones, 1 eMachine and 1 Macbook connected to my network working fine and dandy. However, the HP laptop from work simply won't connect unless wired.

I have tried the following:
1. Uninstalled and reinstalled the driver.
2. Power Cycled my Router
3. Power Cycled my entire network
4. WinsockXPFix tool

I'm completely at a loss here. No idea what to do to fix this. I'm running Windows XP and have a 2Wire router.

I appreciate any advice anyone can give me to help solve this annoyance.

I have change the NIC from another identical laptop and that is doing the same.
I first noticed the problem after running thru safety.live.com, I tried doing a restore point but that doesn't help.
I have tried the wifi with no encryption, again it connects but won't browse or give access to the rest of the network. I have also tried other pcs on the same router and AP, they work fine.

it maybe a DNS issue - unlikely
OR its a Security issue

so two things to try

1) Log into your router , goto the wireless security section make and note of the type of security and the password ket
Now disable the security and see if the ipod can connect

DNS

Do you have the latest wireless driver from the PC manufacturer's web site?

Can you successfully, with no collateral damage, connect via ethernet with your wireless switched off?

For a wireless connection ...

Open a (black) Command Prompt window:
Hold the Windows logo key and press r; in the Run box type cmd and click on OK.

Type the following command:

IPCONFIG /ALL

[Note that there is no space between the slash and ALL.]

[Press ENTER after the command.]

Right click in the command window and choose Select All, then hit Enter.
Paste the results in a message here.

If necessary use a text file and removable media to copy the results to a computer with internet access.

I own 2 laptops (both Toshiba). The older model will connect fine to the Netgear N-300 WNR 2000 & new comp will not. I finally made a new homegrp hoping that wold help, disabled firewall etc. Error I am getting is " Network cable unplugged". After I troubleshoot it sometimes allows me back online & shows me surrounding routers in the area. Why is it not even recognizing my neighbors routers 95% of the time? It isn't the comp as it works fine outside the home. Thanks for all help. Very frustrated. Can I delete and just start over and how?

This suggests the PC is not looking at your wireless card it is only looking for a cable connection. Does the PC have an on off switch for the wireless card, make sure it is turned on.

Power off and remove the battery. Take the wireless card out and clean the contacts with a soft rubber (up and down not from side to side) reseat the card. Replace the battery and boot up. Look in Device Manager and check that the wireless card appears under Network Adapters and does not have a yellow ? or triangle next to it. Check on line for the most up to date drivers for your operating system and then uninstall the card in Device Manager and reinstall the fresh driver. Check again for connection.

If you find no obvious errors take the wireless card from the working PC and try that in it. You will have to install a different driver if the card is not identical. If that works then I think you can assume the card is defective.

Hi All,

I have an internal wifi card and a USB one.

I have two APs,
Adapter Name = WifiPh, SSID = AP1 - connects to Internet via tethered phone 192.168.143.1
Adapter Name = WifiLAN SSID = AP2 - connects to local wired LAN router 192.168.3.37

On my laptop (win8.0) it shows
WifiPh
AP1 <-- Set Connect Automatically
AP2
WifiLAN
AP1
AP2 <-- Set Connect Automatically

Providing both Adapters are active then it works as required. But, if the WifiPh is it not running (phone off, flat battery) then it connects WifiPh+AP2 and that is not good as the Gateways are totally different.

Is there some way I can force WifiPh to ONLY ever connect to AP1 and similarly, force WifiLAN to ONLY ever connect to AP2?

Thanks

A:Two wifi adapters How to define who connects to which

You could try turning off Broadcast SSID then delete/forget the network you don't want to connect to. If I'm understanding correctly.

My laptop used to run fine but currently it only connects to the wifi if i am near my router. My router is not that far from my room but when im in my room my laptop says no network connection available. It is weird because there are different connections from my neighbors that poped up in my room but now my laptop does not pick up any connections at all unless im near the router. I don't think it's a problem with the router because the same thing happens when im at my other house. At the other house the router is in the second floor my room there is on the first. I used to be able to connect from that room but the same thing happens again. My laptop only connects to the internet when im near the router.

My laptop is windows 8.

I'm having an unusual problem where I can connect to WiFi but there does not seem to be any data transferring.

I have a PCI card which does not work, and a USB WiFi adapter which does work.

Only using Microsoft Security Essentials for security software.

Things I've tried to resolve the issue with the PCI card:
- Restarted modem/router combo.
- Uninstalled/reinstalled drivers.
- Uninstalled/reinstalled hardware.
- Restarted computer.
- Cleared stored WiFi networks.
- netsh winsock reset
- ipconfig /release and /renew
- Disable any non Microsoft services using msconfig
- Updated Windows

I have officially run out of ideas. Has anyone seen this before?

Here are the ipconfig results from the two WiFi adapters.

PCI card does not work but USB adapter does? Has to be one of 2 things:
Bad Network Card
Bad or outdated drivers for the card
How can you tell? If the card is brand new and you have properly installed Windows 7 drivers, then the card is most likely bad. You could try putting it into an older computer like XP, installing the XP drivers, and testing. Other than that, bad card. Fortunately, these cards are not expensive at all and can be replaced rather cheaply, especially if you order online from a reputable place like Amazon.

Drivers. If the card is old and you have put it into a Windows 7 PC, you have had to installed drivers for it, unless Windows found a driver for you. Those still might not work. If the card is not very old, you can try visiting the manufacturer website and finding new Windows 7 drivers, 64 bit, or 32 bit if that is your system. Right click Computer, Properties to find out. Install those and see if it works now. If not, just buy a cheap card with new Windows 7 drivers. You can get these things for just a couple of dollars online. Not worth burning up hours and hours of your time for 5 bucks, is it? You don't work for 50? an hour, do you? Because these cards are so cheap, they do not produce updated drivers for older cards, just have to buy a new one.

I have done a lot of this stuff and this is the best I can come up with right now, friend. Good luck!

I have an older Dell Inspiron 1000 that connected and worked fine through its WiFi until I installed a Comodo Firewall program about two years ago (and immediately removed it). After that its WiFi will connect to my router, but cannot acquire an IP address from it.

The same router works fine with two other WiFi PCs I have, and before all this happened my Insp 1000 connected properly to this same router. Also my router shows the Insp 1000 on it list of network PCs. Using an Ethernet connection to my router, the Insp 1000 connects at 100 Mbps, but again - no data is passed.

The earliest System Restore date available is after all this started, so that won't help.

I have the WIN XP disks to install/re-install the OS, but that is a step I'd like to avoid if possible.

Can anyone think of anything to try to fix this problem?

Alright, I have a bit of a puzzle here. My wifi only connects to my family's cell phones, and they all work perfectly fine. I just got a new laptop, and it won't connect anywhere in my house, except for one corner of my back porch. I have no clue why it does this. My sister's laptop, and my dad's tablet won't connect either. Only the cell phones. Any Ideas?

Please attach a screen shot of the Networks page (don't collapse the Radar, Connection or Signal History) of the Xirrus Wi-Fi Inspector. If you need help with a screen shot see TSG Posting a Screenshot. FWIW to take screen shots with Windows Vista or latter I prefer to use the built-in Snipping Tool.

Hi all, I am afraid I need some help here - this one has me stumped.

I have just installed a router (Netgear DG834GT) and have it all up and running fine with all sorts of devices, Xboxes, Iphones, laptops, PCs, PS3, iPods etc. I have one older laptop however that refuses to work and exhibit behavior I have not come across before. It is a old Toshiba Satellite Pro L20 with an Atheros AR5005G wireless network adapter running XP. I am using XP to configure the wifi (the Windows Zero Config Service I believe) - there is no other software on the laptop trying to manage the connection.

The WiFi is WPA2-PSK and there is no other interference on channel 11 where it is broadcasting.

This laptop tries hard to connect - it sees the network fine all of the time, it acquires the network address and says connected really quick as I would expect. It then disconnects itself after about 15-25 seconds and retries - it re-connects again but then dies again in the same way. It does this a few times and then appears to give up until I force a reconnect. At which point it goes through the connect/disconnect loop again.

I have checked and triple checked the security credentials of the laptop wi-fi connection.I have reduced the encryption to WPA (this laptop was working with WPA2 previously fine). I have also tried it with a static IP address (which is matched up to a reservation on the DHCP server in the router).

And yet still no joy. I am a bit stumped. And sadly the LAN port on the laptop i... Read more

In the command prompt window that opens, type type the following commands, each followed by the Enter key:

Note: Type only the text in bold for the following commands.

Reset TCP/IP stack to installation defaults, type: netsh int ip reset reset.log

Reset WINSOCK entries to installation defaults, type: netsh winsock reset catalog

Reboot the machine.

Finally, if neither of these work, clear the wireless profiles again and try the router with no encryption as a test. Also, make SURE no MAC filtering is active on the router.

I have a Lenovo Ideapad Z585. It has a Broadcom 802.11n wireless adapter.

I have not had the computer that long but everytime I turn the computer on, my home wireless network is not connected automatically. I click on the WIFI icon in the system tray, locate my network and click connect.

I am told that windows cannot connect to this network. I run the troubleshooter which tells me to powerdown my router, turn it back on and try again. I do this and use troubleshooter to check if fixed and it connects.

So far I have updated drivers on wireless adapter and then rolled them back again. Uninstalled driver, powered down and turned machine back on reinstalling said driver.

I have done a factory reset of my router, changing login passwords. I have tried using different broadcast channels.

When the machine is connected it is excellent signal strength and I do not loose connection at all.

I have three other machines connected to router which is a Netgear DNG 1000. They all connect automatically and stay connected.

Any suggestion on how to get connection to work automatically?
