Registry editors/tune-up utils

Q: Registry editors/tune-up utils

I want to reopen a dialog from earlier this year containing the comment below from Flavalee:

"Stay completely away from registry cleaner/booster/optimizer/tune-up type programs, no matter who recommends them to you or what they claim they can do to your computer. They do little-to-nothing to improve speed or performance, but what they can do is break programs and damage the operating system. And if the damage is severe enough, you'll be looking at a reinstall of the operating system."

I have had some damage done but nothing that didnít mysteriously clear up on its own. Following a recent run of Dell's tune-up app (aka System Mechanic) where I may have pushed it too far by clicking a clean up function I didnít fully understand, I was left in a state where I could not run Task Mgr (ctrl-alt-del) nor any app. A mouse click did nothing, but cursor and mouse remained active. Oddly this cleared up after 2 reboots. I was reconciled to doing a system restore as I shut down late the previous evening and was greatly relieved. Now 2 wks later, all is still well.

So, this and other experiences Iíve had lend credence to the above quote, BUT Iíd like to see some qualification. For example, how do you explain the following: About 3-4 mo after acquiring my wifeís new Dell Vostro laptop last summer, it acquired IBS, or Intermittent BSOD Syndrome on boot-up. It would happen on 2 out of 3 fresh starts or restarts. Once it occurred, a restart would usually come up clean only to reoccur on the next start-up.

Since we were under warranty, I called Dell and after the perfunctory dance which yielded nothing, I was led into the ďDell Tune-Up app sales pitchĒ phase (warranty only covers hardware and diags seemed to rule out hardware). The deal was clinched once it was clear that the alternative was spending many hours on the phone at an hourly rate while a tech walked me through removal of every app Iíd installed since the computer arrived.

I then downloaded the Dell tune-up app for $40 and much to my amazement, it fixed the problem and 9 months later, the laptop remains stable. I have used the Dell app many times on my desktop but this last time had the problem mentioned above. Perhaps a rule of thumb might be to not run these things unless you have a specific problem you are trying to fix and even then, run them judiciously and do not check every feature box available.

It is curious that Microsoft does not offer an app for this. They only offer a "buyer beware" notice to do your home work first before acquiring a 3rd party registry cleaner app. I know about the old and very simple MS reg cleaner app for XP and before, forget name.

I remain "on the fence" re/ registry cleaners and am well aware of a leading tenant of American Marketing 101 which reads "Create a need and fill it" (think iPad). Note it's not "Find" the need but "Create" the need. Just because there are 20 registry cleaners out there does not mean the world really needs one. Or do we????

Preferred Solution: Registry editors/tune-up utils

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Have tried just about everything recommended to improve performance and am at my wits end. Does anybody have good advice regarding reg editors? Don't want to start monkeying with the registry and really mess things up! I ran a scan with RegCure and it posted over 1200 errors but am not about to buy a product I am unsure of. Anything free out there?

A:Registry Editors

Most people here, including me, don't recommend using registry cleaners. They can delete things that can cripple your computer. I've done it to mine a few times. But, if you feel you need to do something there is THIS SITE which is Micro$oft's One Care that will go through your registry. Since it is their program, XP, it might be OK. But I'm not endorsing it. It too might do something wrong. I've used it a couple of times and so far nothing bad has happened. You can also click on Start, Run and do a sfc /scannow it will run a check on your system files and repair or replace them. You must have your XP disc in and sit there while it's running, because it won't always find the file it's looking for and you need to click on the "retry" button. It takes about 40 to 45 minutes on my computer...I'm sure someone else will come along with more advice soon and you can ponder all of it and decide what to do, or not do.Good Luck...

What is the best registry editor, if there is one? I have been using Uniblue and ran it and corrected my registry. I then downloaded a trial copy of Registry Cure and ran it, It says I have over 600 errors in my registry. Anyway my subscription to Uniblue has expired, what should I get.

A:[SOLVED] Registry Editors

Hi Phil. . .

I would advise that you do not use any of these products. They are an absolute waste of money and they could end up corrupting your registry. Then you'll be back to see me when the BSOD epidemic begins.

The items it is flagging as "errors" are not errors at all - just entires in the registry that currently have no association to them. They hurt nothing, take up very little space and cause non-measurable time loss during boot-up when the registry is assembled from files found on your hard drive. We are talking about a fraction of a second.

600 items out of the Vista NT Registry which can easily contain 500,000 + entries represents just 0.12% of total.

To give you an example of how some of these "errors" occur - assume that you no longer have use for Microsoft Word and un-install it. A registry scanner/cleaner would then pick up anything associated with MS Word and its files, whose file extensions are .doc (≤ Word 2003) or .docx (Word 2007) files. The un-installed Word file extension relations found in the registry would still exist, but have no program to open should a doc/x file be clicked on.

I suggest that you leave the registry alone. There may be a time in the future after the installation/un-installation of hundreds of programs where this becomes necessary, but then should only be done so under the instructions of someone familiar with registry cleaners. Most important - back up the registry before using a re... Read more

I'm thinking of restoring some registry keys for a particular program that I deleted, by connecting a HD from another computer that has the same program installed. Since Regedit automatically looks at it's own registry, I would need another registry tool to look at the registry on the other HD, and be able to display both simultaneously to facilitate duplication. when running the Tune-Up cleanup, it appears to find about 100 registry problems (invalid entries in the windows history list. u know, mostly references to missing old files.) the problem is, i clean them all, but when i run the program again, they re-appear! i checked everything, deleted recent files, but nothing. i deactivated system restore, cleaned them once more, and nothing again! i even ran another registry cleaner..but the problem seems to insist. on safe mode the entries do not appear so i cant do anything.
help would be appreciated

A:Tune-Up and registry problems

I wouldn't advise you to run registry cleaners - as most of them don't really know what is good from bad. So it could potentially leave your computer useless if it deletes something it shouldn't.

In my honest opinion, I wouldn't worry about it. Just use Windows clean up, run a check disk, and defrag your hard drive every month or so. You should be good then.

Hope this helps..

XP Pro Registry Clean-Up & Tune-Up Multiple Restores & Missing Hard-Drive Space

Hi again,

This is the 2nd of 2 issues I am experiencing currently and would like help resolving. The first is in regards to a possible infection with symptoms that selected folder images randomly change. I am stating this, as I was unsure whether I should wait until that problem is resolved before attempting to fix this, the 2nd issue.

After a recent AVG 2011 Free update, I began experiencing incompatibility issues with Google.ca as my home page, and IE8. Whenever I would launch IE8, it would crash and then recover Google.ca, the homepage. Sometimes an error report would be generated.
After searching I found that the issue is the AVG Safe Search Add-on.

I've tried all sorts of options. I downloaded Google Chrome, but didn't like it. Partly due to its functionality, but also because I use Spywareblaster (currently uninstalled) which is not compatible.

I actually like IE8. I've decided that I will just disable the Safe Search option.

However... due to this and other issues

I decided to restore my computer to a previous state. I did this a few times trying different restoration points to make sure that all the software I wanted was installed, and those I didn't weren't... making sure that my computer was performing properly. One restoration point, which probably had the .net framework 3whatever (the one I'm currently using is 1.1), had my computer activity light... Read more

My computer seems to be infected. Mcafee is periodically intercepting Trojans being downloaded onto my computer, even when I am not using the internet. Also, a version of MRT.exe keeps popping up in my second hard drive inside a folder with a random hexadecimal name; when I check it under "properties", it has no Microsoft markings and thus appears to be fake. My internet also running irregularly.
I've scanned my computer with Mcafee, Malwarebytes, Microsoft Security Emergecy Response Tool, and AVG (all scans were run separately), and none of them have detected any infections.
Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

A:Computer seems infected, but 4 different AV utils detect nothing.

You won't be able to do this, because you haven't got a "Ghost Image"; but on my computer, I use "Hot Swap Trays" so I can save whatever I want to, and access it by installing the "Hot Swap Tray" any particular item I want to use is on. That way I can have "Ghost Images" of as many of my partitions as I want. Not long ago I had a similar problem, on my "C" drive. My Internet was running VERY slow, i.e. taking forever to open any link I clicked on. I ran Antimalwarebytes, F-Secure, and XoftSpyXE, and none of them found anything.
So, I stuck in the "Hot Swap Tray" with a "Ghost Image" of my "C" drive, and restored my "C" drive from my "Ghost Image". Because Norton Ghost wipes the partition before it does the "Restore", that solved the problem.
So it is a good idea to have "Ghost Images" of any of your various partitions that may develop problems.

Hi all.
I'm gearing up towards losing my home PC in a few months time (cos it's my housemate's, not mine). I figured it may be sensible to get as many of those essential free downloads as possible now, so when I get my own PC and can just install everything from a nice pile of disks.

Obviously Winzip is hugely useful, and I'll download the latest free updates of Real Player and Quick Time.
I have a copy of a Download Accelerator, but in truth it's pretty crappy, so I'll probably forget that.

Are there any other free downloads that have become indispensible to you?
If so, can you tell me where to get them?
I don't mean obscure technical stuff, just the things that make life easier for the PC average user.

Much appreciated if you can help!

Hello all. I'm a newbie here and came across this site after hours of troubleshooting an infection.

Hoping that one of you kind folks can help me clean this off so as to preclude a lengthy rebuild. I have a good amount of computer experience and have all my data backed up on a now-disconnected USB drive.

I have an XP SP3 computer that apparently got infected at 9am this morning. My Symantec AnitVirus Corporate Edition v10 seemed to catch some of it (I can see that the quarantine was updated at that time), but the computer started to misbehave and then BSODed at 9:15am. I booted into safe mode and started poking around and tried to remediatevia a combo of SAV, AdAware and manual effort, as I have done during other virus infections on other PCs.

- searched and found all files created between 9-9:15am
- moved all the obvious files to a separate folder and set with list-only NTFS rights
- saw that my previous System Restore point had probably been infected, removed those files as well
- removed references to jukazena.dll and tepidike.dll in HKLM\software\microsoft\windows\currentversion\run

When I booted into normal mode, I was unable to login and quickly got a message about SERVICES.EXE terminating unexpectedly with error -1073741819 and a countdown to restart. So back to Safe Mode....

When I went to run SAV and AdAware in Safe Mode,... Read more

I had to do a complete restore to  "factory" state on my T60 with CD's provided by Lenovo. Burn date on the CD's is August 2006. Everything goes just fine until the final restart when I get this error message - "Product recovery could not find the X:\Preboot\utils\Convert.cmd."  I did see a whole bunch of "X:\files" go by from the supplemental product CD that came with the R&R set of discs - I did not see the missing file above - Is this a new file added after the burn date of my R&R discs? Any way to download this file from Lenovo support site ? This is a critical laptop for me and a big inconvience to have to wait for a new set of discs!TIARIch

Does anyone know of a solution for this, Here is the scoop, My sisters PC, an IBM ThinkCenter A52, had its Hard drive fail and with it went the recovery partition. I talked to IBM/Lenovo Support and was told that since the PC was no longer under warranty that they would not sell me a set of recovery disks..This makes no sense what so ever to me. Anyway with some digging I found an IBM business partner that sells recovery disks, so I ordered them. I received the set( 7 cds). I Boot up with the Lenovo rescue and recovery cd then follow the instructions on screen for the remaining 6 cds  Product recovery disks 1-5 and the supplemental product recovery CD. All goes OK I remove the last CD and then reboot to the rescue and recovery menu. I select restore to factory settings, and click next to begin the process and I get the following error.  Product recovery could not find file X:\Preboot\Utils\Convert.cmd .  Is there a fix for this? I have searched the internet and have found others who had the same issues but found no solutions... I have posted questions on this forum before and gotten  no response . Any help would be appreciated....

In "My Music" I have two sorts of files. Those I have downloaded from KaZaAlite, and those I have got off CD's using XP Media Player.

All the audio editors I have tried (including one that was suggested on this forum) either won't save the results as an mp3 (illegal?) or won't open certain files.

I do belly dancing and the tracks I have are maybe 15min long but the dance is 3min in the middle of the song! I was successful in chopping a song I downloaded off Kazaa (before Power Audio Editor run out of free time) but with the new audio editors I have tried, they will not open songs I have got from CD (Copywrite??).

Since I am only using the demo versions I wonderd if the purchased software would do the trick, but ranging in price from $5 - $345 I am unwilling to pay the price until I know more (and you can double those US dollars to equal NZ dollars!).

I wanted to use Lightworks but it only goes up to Win8.1. I have tried Gopro Studio on my previous more powerful computer and it crashed several times, so I'm a little dubious to try it again to say the least. Any suggestion would be great, I haven't been having much luck with computers recently.

Does anyone know of any freeware editors that can do a HALFTONE effect? I found one called 20/20 but I can't seem to get a good download on it as it has possibly been discontinued? Any other programs?

Are there any text editors that can be put on my website to enable my customers to type their own text? The catch is that I need the alignment "Justify", not just left or center. It is to justify their own text in a text box on a card that they are designing. Is there such a thing?

I want them to see a preview of their text as it would print. I really need full justification and interactive on my site.

Any suggestions?

With the new Microsoft Word 2016 if you insert an equation through the Equation button within the Insert menu you get this new-looking editor.

Equations created in such a way can be viewed in inline, professional or linear mode and offer advanced options.

But if you use a keyboard shortcut (Alt+= or any user defined one) instead you end up getting this old-fashioned editor:

And if you edit equations from documents made by other people sometimes they are opened with the new editor, sometimes with the old one.

Can anyone explain the difference between them and how to force Word to always use the new one, please?, I would like to get it with a keyboard shortcut.
And also how to convert an equation made with the old editor onto the new format?

First, inevitable details:

1) I live in Taiwan and bought an English language version of Windoze 7 (home premium) while here. I have lived here for six years, so I have never seen another English language copy of 7 and don't know the behaviour of versions sold in other countries.

2) Yes, my software is registered and legal.

3) Yes, I used the search on this site before I posted this, as well as google and other searches.

The problem:

In other Windoze versions (XP, Vista, 2000, et al), if I type or paste an URL into a RTF editor, it will be treated as plain text. But Windoze 7 turns it into an active link, and if I click it with the mouse to edit it, it will open a page in my browser. If I use the keyboard and hit Enter or Space to try and break up the links, it opens the link in my browser. The links can no longer be edited, only deleted entirely.

How do I stop Windoze 7 from doing this? I want to disable this bug, but there is no mention of it in any menu or documentation. Does this happen in other people's copies or versions (e.g. enterprise) of Windoze 7?

At first I thought it was limited to Write/Wordpad, but it also happens in every other freeware RTF editor I've tried - QJot, AbiWord, RoughDraft, CopyWriter and a few others. And this annoying behaviour does not happen in other Windoze OSes, only in 7. I tested the same exact version of those same freeware RTF editors in other OSes without any problems.
