Preferred Solution: Word document link not auto updating

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hello,
I am curious to know if there is any way i can make a word document into a hyprelink. I am currently the administrator for a site called www.southbuffalobaseball.com and it uses a program called wordpress. I have been told its not a good thing to upload a word document as it can change the layout of my website. I have a application i want people to be able to print out but its in word format. I was hoping there is a way i can upload the file to a site and place a link on my page so that when people click on the link it opens the application in word, and thus they can print it out. Is it possible to do this?

I am doing genealogy for my family. I use Word 2000 to record my family group sheet

I don't know what it's called but I'd like to be able to click on someones name and have it bring me to the place where I have that person's information. I've believe I've seen that capability in some documents.

For example, I have my parents family group sheet in which I am listed as their son.
Then on another page is my familys group sheet
So I'd like to be able to click on my name Lawrence (which I expect would be in blue underline font) in my parents family group sheet and be brought to my name Lawrence (I don't know whether or not would be in blue underline font) in my family group sheet

How do I do that?

Hello, Welcome to SF,

Try these steps and see whether it works

In Word 2007, go to Office button > Word Options > Proofing > AutoCorrect
Options > AutoFormat As You Type tab, and check the box for "Internet and
network paths with hyperlinks".

Hope this helps,

If you open a brand new document without any macros attached you should be able to change the application security level to high so that no macros will run which will then allow you to open the document with the code attached to edit it.

Please help point me in the right direction.  I checked the File association on Internet settings and document type docx is associated with Word, but it won't open.

Try refining this symptom description.  What exactly do you mean by "it won't open"?  Answering that might explain why you are posting this in an IE forum.  E.g. right-click, Copy Shortcut whatever it is that you are calling
a "broken link" and Paste it here.
Otherwise, try right-click, Save target as... to put the file into your Downloads (Ctrl-j) and then use right-click, Properties to find its
full path and name.  Note that that would be quite different from what the Copy Shortcut step would have shown.
Next I suspect that the Set Associations GUI tool may not be showing you the correct information.  FWIW it certainly doesn't show me the correct information in W8.1.  So, I would try checking if you have an explicit association and file type combination
by using the assoc and ftype commands in a cmd window.  In fact, instead of just showing the ftype for the current association I would use this:
    ftype  |  find  /i  "word"
Then you could take the most appropriate template (not necessarily the one pointed to by the assoc command) and fill it in on a Run... dialog (or a ... Read more

When saving a Word 2007 document as a webpage (htm, html), an extra folder is automatically created besides the hmtl document itself. This folder contains background information like pictures, wallpaper etc. Is there a way to prevent that folder from being created in the first place? I've got Word 2000 on another computer, and when I save my word documents as html files over there, that extra folder is not generated. The only time that folder is created in 2000 is if my documents contain pictures, wallpaper etc. In Word 2007, it is created all the time, even though my documents are just plain text.

A:Solved: Word 2007, saving document as html document: how to get rid of extra folder?

Managed to find the solution, it was very simple after all. One has to save the document as a filtered webpage and click "yes" when a box pops up warning you that you will use certain featuers which are specific to Office2007, such as the background. Then the document will save without that extra folder and files.

I am running XP and Word 2000 and Nortons. Word will crash if you leave the document open for a while (there is no specific time frame) and then select close (icon). The error - Microsoft Word for Windows has encountered a problem and needs to close. The details are: AppName: winword.exe
appver 9.0.0.3822
Modname: kernel32.dll
modvers: 5.1.26002180
offset 0001eb33

This has pretty much happened since I got this laptop. I have reformatted and reinstalled everything (due to another problem) and still have the same problem with word. I have used the same CD on other computers to install word and they do not have the same problem.

I use a variety of templates and plain documents in my work and can not pin point it to one template.

If you leave Word open with a document (no matter what size) and come back to it later this is when the problem happens. I started to get around it my saving first then closing, but this no longer works. The save completes and then I select Close and this is when it happens - you get the dreaded pause and then you hear the whirl of the computer and then you get the Microsoft Word for Windows has encountered a problem and needs to close. Firstly I could put up with it but is now just a nusiance.

I have two questions regarding documents created in Word 2007...

1) Can links be created within a Word document? For example, can I click on and item my table of contents and have the document jump to that particular section of the document?

2) Also, is there a way to make sections of the document hidden until the user clicks a specific word or graphic in the document?

I'd like to specify a particular instruction and include a "Show example" link that would make a detailed example appear for those who needed the extra help.

Thanks everyone!

A:Word 2007 - Links within a document? Hide/Show sections of a document?

If you created table of contents through References - Table of Contents, you can hold Ctrl and click on the item in that table, word will take you there. This feature is standard.

Also, to navigate inside document you can use bookmark option.
Insert bookmarks. Word 2010 Bookmarks
Then insert Hyperlink - in the window select second tab "Place in This Document" and choose your bookmark.

As for hiding parts of document, I do not think that is possible.
You can create that in HTML document with javascript, but not in Word document.

This might be kind of tricky.

We're trying to streamline our RFQ-to-Quote process, which currently utilizes a combination of digital forms and hand-written forms passed among several departments. My boss asked me to modify the RFQ form to save him some typing (because he has to retype all the information in the final Quote), and I--not understanding the complexity of the process--very stupidly told him that it could be done fairly simply using form fields and bookmarks. He's been kind enough to grant me a lot of leniency because for him anything would be better than the current situation, so as long as I can improve on what we use now, he'll be happy.

I thought about creating form templates for each of the departments, then as the original RFQ circulated from one department to the next subsequent forms would be appended to it to create a rolling document. I'm not too happy with the that idea; there's all sorts of room for user error. I thought about creating a single document template containing every department's form, but a) I don't want any single department to be able to modify information gathered during another department's process, and b) certain departments must generate a variable number of copies of their form.

I told my boss the best way to accomplish a secure and low-maintenance RFQ-to-Quote would be to create a stand-alone Quote Generator application, but we both agree the effort is not condusive to the timeframe by whic... Read more

Hi all.

The other day whilst in the throws of fixing another unrelated problem I came across a strange and annoying Word Document problem.

When I bought this word document up it present a very unusual icon. It was grayed out and part of the title contained a ~$ then the name of the document.

When I tried to open it, the word document only opened up to the gray page just before it should turn white displaying the text, and there it froze.

Nothing worked after that! The freeze was so bad that the only way to close the window was to turn the computer off at the tower.

After rebooting I tried it again 2 more times with the same problem freeze occurring in the Word document.

Today I again found another document that caused the same problem, this time the icon for that document was normal but right beside this icon was another malformed grayed out ~$(name) icon.

When I tried to open either of the 2 icons I got the same freezing up problem, just as before.

I tried a previously suggested step in that I opened "Word" and from there navigated to where the bad files were located.

In turn I only hi-lighted each, and at the bottom of that window clicked on the arrow for the drop down box.

I was advised that one of the presented options was to repair the file. No such option was present.

So there you have it. Any advice on this problem please?

Regards

A:[SOLVED] Word document freezes computer and document is corrupted

Hi all.

Just to advise that I am going to mark this topic as Solved......to a fashion so to speak.
I may resurrect it at a later stage if the problem re-presents it's self.

In a nut shell. I spent a lot of time today searching sites and performing tests including searches on my computer program.

I ascertained that all the aforementioned "defective " Word documents originated in the same folder. After performing several search functions with the criteria as ~$.doc no other such files were found on my computer, other that the already mentioned.

All tests suggested would not repair the said documents.

I have now deleted the offenders and I will monitor the situation. If I run into problems again I will re-post.

Thanks anyway.

Hi,

I work at a small non-profit and we have updated two computers with new computers running Windows 7. We use MS Word 2003. I have checked all threads on forum related to this issue, but nothing seems to correct our problem. I would be grateful for any help.

Description of issue: With a Word document open, one should be able to click "File" > "Send To" > Mail Recipient As Attachment", or any of the other mail options, and have the email composition window of Thunderbird pop up. What happens is that Word is attempting to send the attachment via Windows Live Mail. The computer basically freezes. If you try and abort or get out of Word, and error pops up stating you can't close Word until the email has been sent. Finally, you have to force a shut down of the computer.

Internet Explorer shows Thunderbird as default email client. I have check all of the other obvious places for setting the default email client, but I can't seem to find a conflict anywhere on the computer showing Windows Live Email as default client.

As a side note, this employee was using Outlook Express as their email client prior to the computer upgrade and all setting were imported into Windows Live Mail, which was initially used. The employee did not like Windows Live Mail, so I installed Thunderbird. It is used as the default email client and the only issue has been with Word. My Gmail account is auto sending an email to all my gmail contacts without my knowledge until I saw reply posts of unsuccessful emails. Contents as such:

I too opened a similar email afew weeks back. Nothing seems wrong at first so I never really thought much about it.
Can someone help me on this?
I have just changed my password for my Gmail. hopefully it stops the sending. but I want to know if my computer is infected or by using smartphones or tablets, will it affect the gadgets too?
Thank you!

A:Gmail auto sending to my contacts, and auto deleting a virus link

A SPAMmer does not need access to your Gmail account in order to use your email address.

They can use whatever SPAM-sending program they like to send out email using *-your-* email address in the Sender's field.

Then, if any of the email addresses they sent the email to happen to be invalid, the unsuccesful delivery messages would be returned to you simply because your email address was in the Sender's field.

In order to stop this, you would have to find the person using your email address and hang them by the neck until dead. ;)

I'm troubleshooting sound driver issues and have come across something peculiar. I tried shutting off the auto driver update for windows because I do not want the specific drivers that they are going to use. In the screenshot you can see that an installation occurs even with the setting turned off. My question is, are these some default generic type audio drivers such that they will not interfere with the soundcard drivers? Is this some background type driver that will be installed regardless?

So I'm tasked with updating, both format-wise and content-wise, a 6-7 year old 'resource guide' (it's work-related) in Word. By formatting, I mean dealing with things like columns, page headers and the like. Unfortunately, it's proving quite the hassle. Any content edition often screws up the format in unforseen and laughable ways. Minor things, like putting a space between two paragraphs messes things up 'down the line'. Even simple things like getting rid of a blank page in the middle of the document seems impossible, because the only logical thing to do is do 'backspace' the following content into the blank page, thereby messing up the format down the line.

Maybe I'm missing something. I wouldn't necessarily call myself an expert with word, but I'm no slouch either. I don't have much experience with formatting, and reformatting, and re-reformatting what gets messed up from the reformatting...and on...

Are there any simple solutions? My hunch is that I'm using a different version of word than the version the original file was written with, and that may be causing some conflicts. Or, maybe documents that are "formatted" in a very particular way, suiting an original document like spandex fits Hulk Hogan, is the problem?

I appreciate any responses. If you want some more details or examples, let me know.

A:Updating an 'old' formatted work document

I'm sure you have a backup of the original as you experiment, but without looking at the document, it's hard to say. Without seeing it, it is often faster to simply Cut and Paste the text into a new document in the format you want for the new document (remember to Paste Special and choose unformatted text so you don't bring over the goofiness from the original doc). And as you said, being an older doc that you didn't originally create, you will spend a long time trying to add your formatting into the existing document.

I hope that helps a little. Good luck.

Hello all,

On the 12th October I was editing a Word 2007 document on my Vista Home laptop. Throughout editing I pressed Ctrl S to save the doc over the previous version. I copied data in from several other files.
I went back yesterday to edit the document again and it has disappeared. The only version of the doc is a previous version dated 21st Sept.
I searched on all files modified after 11th Oct just in case I had saved it under another name. Not in there. The files I copied data from did come up in the search results though, soi knwo the search function is working.
I checked the default Autosave location - not in there.
I checked the recycle bin - the doc is not in there and neither are any ~ files or autosaved files. I haven't emptied my recycle bin for months.
I cannot find a word doc modified afetr the 11th October.

Can it really just have disappeared? It is my MBA dissertation paper and I worked on this edit for an awful lot of hours.

Many thanks.

You should be able to hit File-Open from Word. Change the files of type (at the bottom of the dialog box) to "all files, *.*" and just double-click the Wordperfect document. It should automatically convert it.

After that, if I were you, I'd go to Tools-Options, Compatibility tab. Change compatibility to Word document. Then, hit ctrl-a to select the entire document, go to Format-Paragraph and make sure line spacing is single; then change the font to Arial, Times new roman, or other Word font, as opposed to the old Wordperfect fonts.

Hey Folks.

This is annoying the hell out of me so I thought I'd ask.

On the start menu you have the "Documents" link under the user name. Mine takes me to library link to My Documents but it won't keep the icons the right size. If I go via the start menu Document link then into My Pictures it keeps the icon sizes as medium. I prefer large icon sizes for My Pictures but if I change it and back up all my icons are then large size.

So, can I change the document link on the start menu from a library to a straight link to a folder where I keep my documents? Or delete it and add my own link instead?

It's just really annoying me now and I'm probably going to format my PC again tonight.

No problem...

Right click on the Windows Orb on the taskbar...
Then select Properties from the menu...
On the dialog's "start menu tab" click "Customize"...
Set it up as you need it.

For the icon size thing... If you set the icon size and/or display properties in a given folder and then close it, it will write a hidden file in that folder and remember your settings. The next time you come to that folder it should show up as you're used to.

I am a medical transcriptionist. I have hundreds of auto corrects on my current computer with Windows XP Word 2002 on it. I am needing to, if possible, copy the auto corrects from Word 2002 to another computer with Windows XP Word 2003.

I also have hundred of words that I have added to spell check that it would be great if I could copy those as well.

I do have a flash drive that I can save these to.

Can someone please help me in terminology and steps that a computer dummy can understand?

Thanking you in advance.

Hi,

I am not sure if this is possible in word, but say I have document A. I place document A within document x, document y, and document z. Is it possible to make changes to document A and have the changes updated automatically to documents x, y, and z?
I hope this makes sense.

Thanks

The only simple way is to go to Insert, Object, Create from file and choose to insert your file as a link (these are 2003 instructions - would be similar in 2007, though.) However, you will then get a questions about the file having links and do you want to update...every time you open the file.
You could also just insert some text and hyperlink it to the other file.
Finally, someone could probably write some VBA that would insert the file and update it every time you opened it.

We are linking to an Excel document in SharePoint Online using a hyperlink that will be sent around in an email.

If IE11 is closed when the hyperlink is clicked, the user will be prompted to Open or Cancel the document. We need this to automatically open.

If IE11 is already open, the document automatically opens with no input required from the user.

We have added the intranet domain to Trusted and Intranet zones in IE and I don't understand why the behaviour is different based on whether the browser is open or closed.

Can someone assist?

Thanks

Hi,

I want to put links in my text, for use on the same machine or mobile media (CDs or floppies).
I'm using Notepad a lot, but this cant be done in Notepad. I am thinking of putting the address line into notepad, so that this can be copy-pasted into RUN
as a crude form of link, but i am hoping that RTF or Wordpad has the facility to insert a link but i have not been able to find info on this.

Apparently i can insert an 'object' in RTF, but that doesnt seem to be the same thing.

The links i want to insert would be mainly for pictures, and would probably take the form of ... "you can see a picture of this HERE" ... or maybe "to see a pic of this click on this link: C/Picture/item.jpg"

I feel this is a fairly simple action, which might be why i cannot find any info on how to do it.

Cheers, John

This will be a delivery document having 3 copies, each copy needs the same serial number.
The serial number needs to increment by +1 after each print but any information entered needs to be reset to blank.
A user form for input ?
Excel or Word (no mailmerge)
Document will reside in a shared folder on a server.
Needs to be user friendly (Idiot proof!)

A:Auto create a sequential serial number for a document

It is possible in Excel. I know of no way to do it in Word. The method is simple.
1. Create the template workbook with all the fields you see fit.
2. Copy the code below into the code module of the workbook

Code:
Private Sub Workbook_BeforePrint(Cancel As Boolean)
Dim cdp As DocumentProperty

On Error GoTo NoSuchProperty
Set cdp = ThisWorkbook.CustomDocumentProperties("PrintCounter")
cdp.Value = cdp.Value + 1
ActiveSheet.Range("A1") = cdp.Value
ThisWorkbook.Save
Exit Sub
NoSuchProperty:
ThisWorkbook.CustomDocumentProperties.Add Name:="PrintCounter", LinkToContent:=False, Type:=msoPropertyTypeNumber, Value:=0
Set cdp = ThisWorkbook.CustomDocumentProperties("PrintCounter")
Resume Next
End Sub

The code looks up the custom document property called "PrintCounter". If the property doesn't exist, it will be created.
Before each print attempt, the counter will be increased by one, and the workbook (with the new propery value) will be saved.
The code displays the counter in cell A1, but it can be displayed anywhere, even in header or footer, even as part of a longer string.

The firmware in my 5-year-old D-Link DIR 601 A router is the original (ver. 1.01). The D-Link site says update 1.04 is available for the A version of the 601. But if I go into the router's configuration and use Tools, Firmware, there's a box to check for firmware updates. When I click it, it says the firmware I have is the latest. Which is right: The D-Link site or the "Check now" button??

I have AVG version 10.0 on my Vista laptop. For the past few weeks, it will automatically update, sometimes a few times during the day. It only lasts about 5 minutes, but its always at the worst possible times. It slows everything down pretty bad. I've gone into Update Manager, and unchecked the "Start automatic updates" box, but its still doing it. Anyone have a tip on how to stop this. I know I'll have to manually update it, thats fine with me.
Thanks!

Looks like more than one check mark needs to be unchecked.

Hello akaki

To stop Internet Explorer 8 from auto updating to Internet Explorer 9 you can use the Internet Explorer 9 Blocker Toolkit.

The link also contains the instructions to install and run the tool. If you have any questions, feel free to ask.

I strongly suggest that you use IE9 over IE8 as it is more secure. Why do you want to keep IE8?

Hi

I was wondering if the above can be achieved?
My scenario is I have an issues log and the file name is saved as the issue title is there a way to get the saved file name into another workbook appearing as a hyper link back to the original?

I am assuming VBA will be needed and added on to the code below which i already have, the code takes the value of C9 (the issue title) and saves it in the right folder.
Code:

If Range("C9") = "" Then
Msgbox "Please ensure you fill out the Issue Title. Thanks"
Else
Saveactiveworkbook.saveas "C:\filename\filename\ & Range("C9")"
Msgbox " Thank you, your issue has now been saved."
Endif

Since installing Windows 10 I have had a problem with it hanging at the same time every night. I can't access any Windows features, but I can still access the internet. I am guessing that the auto update feature is set to run at this particular time. I have to manually turn off the computer and when it is turned on again, I get a message saying Windows is installing updates and I have to wait for that to complete before being able to use the computer again. When this first started to happen I got a message saying "cannot find OneDrive folder" (after manually shutting down and starting again). I don't need OneDrive so I attempted to delete it from the system. I no longer get this message, but the computer still hangs at the same time, almost every night. Can you help?

I had a feeling something like this might happen. I have two outstanding updates which will not install. One is an update for Office 2003 even though I do not have any Office 2003 installed on my brand new computer and the second is for my HP Envy printer. When it kept failing I visited the HP website and updated the latest drivers but Windows 10 still tells me I need to update through Windows update and then fails. I can see these failed updates adding up and wonder what is going to happen as they remind me to update every day and then fail.
