Windows Media Player 11 - double click problem

Q: Windows Media Player 11 - double click problem

Hello All:

I am running Windows XP SP3, Windows Media Player 11.

When I double click a file (.wmv or .avi) in Windows Explorer, Windows Media Player 11 starts but issues a message "Windows Media Player cannot play the file because there might be a problem with your sound or video device. Try installing a updated device driver." or I media player shows a black screen with good sound.

If I start Windows Media Player 11 by double clicking the icon in the quick launch tray or by Start > Programs > Windows Media Player, then right click on the Windows logo, select "File", then the desired video file or select the file from the recently accessed list. The video and sound plays fine.

I have noticed a that if I view the properties with Windows Media Player 11 in either the quick launch tray or in Start > Programs the path is listed as Windows Media Player\wmplayer.exe" /prefetch:1

Thanks for you replies in advance.

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

Hi everyone!

When I find a media file (video file, for example) and double click it, the Media Player doesn't start at all...

I tried to re-associate the Windows Media Player to it's default media extensions through "Default Programs" , and it doesn't work...

All media files play normally on other players. I have to state that sometimes I get the message: "The file.... The parameter is incorrect".

Any help would be greatly appreciated. God bless guys! Take care!

When I double click any movie file, it will not open windows media player 11.   I'm running windows XP.

If I set the XP window file associations to always open with Zoom Player, then Zoom Player will open on double clicking normally.

If I set it back to open with WMP - it will not open.

I can right click any movie file and click open with WMP and that will work.

It's just DOUBLE CLICKING the file that doesnt work.

I am experienced computer user and this one has me baffled.  I do know all about file associations, but I just cant get this working.  BTW, running safe mode still has the same problem.

HELP!

A:Double click movie file will not open Windows Media Player

Duh... tried to uninstall Windows Media Player in order to reinstall WMP11.  Forget uninstalling it....I just downloaded WMP11 and installed it.  Now the file associations work properly!!

Now I need to reinstall K-Lite Codecs into WMP...always a problem for me to decide which version to install???  I went to Wikipedia and read all about the different versions.  I chose the BASIC VERSION...a minimum of codecs get installed.

Also - what to do with WMP Network Sharing Service - whether to allow it through my firewall?
I had pop-ups from ZoneAlarm requesting sharing WMP on my network.  I chose to allow sharing.

Windows Media Player automatically pops up when I first turn pc on. Most icons on desktop have wmp icon. when I right click, it doesn't give me "open with" option, it only gives me "Open" and it opens wmp.

Also, when I right click on desktop, then properties, I then click on "display setting".. it opens wmp.

When I click on "default setting" it opens wmp.

When I click on "Start', control panel, uninstall a program, every is ok until I click on "Turn windows feature on or off" wmp opens again.

I tried all suggestions on different forums, but at one point in one of steps suggested, wmp opens before I can complete unistall or disable.

Any better suggestions? I'm afraid quick fix links suggested in some forums. I am not computer savvy so not sure what to do. I start job next week, and I'll need to use my pc, but don't want anything to go wrong. Help!! Thanks

A:Windows Media Player opens everything I click on. Why?

Hello genesis, and welcome to Vista Forums.

A quick fix would be to do a system restore at boot using a restore point (if available) dated before this happened.

If that is not an option, then you could download and merge the .reg files for the listed lnk (LNK), exe, and dll options in the tutorial below. They will restore the default associations for these file extensions and hopefully fix this for you. You could also download and merge any other file extension that is not working properly as well if you like.

Default File Type Associations - Restore

Hope this helps,

Open the command line (Start > Search > Type cmd).

Type 'assoc' (without quotes) into the command line and paste the output back here. This will query the software registry to check which extensions are currently associated with which applications.

Hi folks,

I just noticed on my Vista Home Prem. 64-Bit that somehow (mysteriously) Windows Media Player on it's own (I assume) has added the follwoing Shortcuts to my "Start Button" and the "Explorer" Right-Click function ... Shortcuts are as follows:

- Add to Windows Media Player List
- Play with Windows Media Player List
- Shop for Music Online

Q1: How can I Uninstall the above shortcuts the right way?
Without uninstalling WMP11 ... since it came with my Vista and I do NOT have the Program Install CD.

Q2: Can you guess how in the world it got installed or activated?
Since I sure as heck did not activate it ... knowingly anyway?

Thanks,

Windows 7x64 Ultimate machine - When I double click on a media file of any sort (MP3, WMV, AVI, etc) from Explorer the window that would play the file comes up and then immediately OVER that window the Windows Media Player library comes up, pauses for 5-10 seconds, doesn't display anything then goes away. The media window will start playing the file.

If a media file is playing and I double click on another one it will immediately start playing.

Trying to get the files to start playing immediately again. I have deleted registry keys and it was like WMP was being started for the first time and deleted the WMP database. No luck.

A:Double click on media file, does not play immediately

right-click on the media file and choose the "Open with.." option
then select the entry "Choose default program.."

- this will give the choice of which program you want to use to listen to the file..

- if you tick the box that says "Always use the selected program to open this kind of file.."
- it will always go to the same program, say Windows Media Player or whatever, whenever you want to listen to music..

- you can reset it to suit whatever type of file you are using - MP3, AVI, etc..

Hiya and welcome

Are you still having this problem? If so, lets take a look at a log. go to http://aumha.org/downloads/hijackthis.zip , and download 'Hijack This!'.
Unzip, doubleclick HijackThis.exe, and hit "Scan".

When the scan is finished, the "Scan" button will change into a "Save Log" button.
Press that, save the log somewhere, and please copy & paste its contents to the forum.

It will possibly show other issues deserving our attention, but most of what it lists will be harmless or even required, so do NOT fix anything yet.
Someone here will be happy to help you analyze the results.

Where can I change this? I don't know if it's a driver problem or what? maybe you can help me.

I run windows 7 32 bit at a Lenovo R61 8918-DEG

Best regards,

A:double click problem

Hi Jo, welcome to the Seven Forums.

When you single click an item (file or folder) which already is selected, Windows 7 thinks it as a rename command and lets you edit the name. This means that you are doing you double click too slowly, Windows thinks it as two single clicks: first one to choose an item, second one to rename.

You can adjust the double click speed. Open Control Panel > Mouse, choose the Buttons tab and change the speed. Next to the speed slider is a folder symbol for you to test the speed.

Good luck.

Kari

Hi, I've used this forum once before and I got some excellent help. I was hoping I'd be able to get some help again. I think I may have a virus, although McAfee doesn't detect anything when I run a virus scan. The main problem is that everytime I click on something, whether it's a doc, folder, clicking on webpage, moving the curser to a desired loccation and clicking, it gives me a double click even when I've only clicked once. It's quite annoying and it used to happen randomly, but it's been happening more and more lately. I checked to see if it's the mouse set up, but the mouse is set up properly (i.e single click is set as a single click, not a double click.)If someone could please help me out, I'd appreciate it. A few days ago the problem appeared on my computer - I have Windows XP PRO SP3 installed!
When I double click on any folder that is located on my desktop, it takes too long to actually open it (about 20 - 30 seconds). The same thing happens when I try to open My computer or Control Panel. I can't say with certainty, but I think that other folders are being opened normally. And I have no problems with opening programs - they open just fine!
Furthermore, during that time (20 - 30 seconds), I am not able to do anything. All I can do is to move mouse cursor all around, but everything else is frozen until the folder is opened.
I tried to clean, fix and defrag registry and to clean system and disk, but the problem still exists.

Hello everyone! I have come across an annoying problem which I cannot solve by myself. I have a Q-Pad 5k gaming mouse which I bought about one year ago. Recently, it started to double click even though I single click. I have tried with a different mouse and it works fine, but the interesting part is that the mouse works very well on my laptop. I believe it may be the USB ports of my desktop, but I may be wrong. Once I connect it to my laptop it works fine, then when I connect it to my desktop works fine for about 10 mins and then starts the double click "ritual" again. Any feedback is appreciated.

When I click on anything I usually only have to single click to bring up whatever, about 50 percent of the time when I click on something it preforms a double-double-click and will bring up the next two pages of what ever, because the single clicks are performing twice.

I had a friend set up my computer two years ago and he fixed it so everything would perform with a single click instead of a double-click and I don't know how to fix the problem of the single click doing two double-clicks at once.

How do I fix so the single click will only perform one double-click at a time?

In the explorer itself, double-clicking files for opening or browsings are completely working fine.
But in the following cases, double-clicking does nothing ('enter' key works fine.)

1. browsing folders in 'Save as/Open dialog' in any applications like MS Word, IE, FF, etc.
2. opening files in 'File Tree' in any applicaitons such as Ultraedit or Eclipse.

I've been googling for ages and still haven't found the solution.
Does anybody know the cause or the solution of this symptom?

Thanks in advance.

A:Weird double-click problem.

You do NOT have a problem. What you state is normal operation.

Double-click ONLY works in Browsers or from your Desktop.

What you are using are function dialogs, which have their own rules which usually do not include double-click support.

I have a Logitech Cordless Mouseman Wheel mouse, model number M-RK53.

I have the thumb button and the wheel button both configured for double-click. But when I first turn the PC on, the double-click funtions do not work. As far as I can determine, neither the thumb button nor the wheel button do anything at that time.

If I do a single right or left mouse click anywhere on the screen, then after that the thumb button and the wheel button both provide double-clicks until I turn off and restart the PC, at which time I'm back to no double-clicks from either button.

This function worked (I think) in previous versions of Windows. But since I upgraded to Windows XP Professional something over a year ago, I lost the double-clicks on startup.

And here’s an oddity: As the PC is booting, there is a brief interval prior to completion of the boot process when the mouse cursor is on the screen and can be moved around. If I move the mouse (and thereby the cursor) around on the screen during this interval, then the above-named buttons will provide double-clicks when the booting in complete. If I don’t move the mouse during that interval of time, then no double-clicks until I click somewhere on the screen with the left or right mouse buttons.

Using mw9791enu.exe.

Any advice as to how to make the thumb button and the wheel button do the double-click at startup?

Thanks.

There is a tick box somewhere in the options for mice that says quick initialisation or something like that. Try turning it off.

Hi guys, I'm not sure what I did to my computer but now whenever I double-click a folder, it'll open up search companion and I can't actually see the contents of the folder unless I right-click and select 'open'.
Here's a screenshot:

How do I fix this? Meaning that it opens up the folder when I double-click.(Default)

I have Windows Media Player 10 and Total Video Player. I use Total Video layer to watch some movies. Anyway the default program to open audio/video files with keeps switching to Total Video Player. I want the default player for all media types to be WMP. I went into the options menu in WMP and checked all the boxes on all formats for WMP to be the default player, but every time I restart the computer the default player to open half of the media files reverts back to Total Video Player.

How do I fix this.

A:Windows Media Player wont stay remain as the default media player?!?!

Hey all,
I was recently in "folder options" and then "file types", just going through and changing icons for disk drives and folders, JPG's and whatnot. Anyway, after doing that, I noticed that if I try to double-click on a disk drive it'll go to Search. And if I double-click on a folder it'll go to Clear Read Only Attributes. I've obviously changed the default action associated with a double-click on folders and disk drives, and I know how to change the default actions undertaken by disc drives and folders and everything else when double-clicked. The thing is, when I go into folder options, file types, advanced (after selecting say, disk drive) the option to change the default action to "open" isn't there, for either folders or disk drives. Other options such as Find are present, but nothing else.

Anybody know how to get it back to "open"? Because I don't want to have to right-click all the time just to open a folder or disk drive. Ta.

Like the title said I am not able to double click on anything at all. I have found a way to get past it and set it to me only clicking once and opening a program, but now it affects my games when I need to double click. I don't know what to do, if someone could help much would be appreciated!

P.S. and I also can't hear any game sounds on my laptop.

Try another mouse set up your programs (Shortcuts) back to double click to open them.

I had a similar issue found out it was the button inside my mouse.

If I have opened any window and then try to double-click on desktop icon I need to click tree times to make it work. Does anyone have same problem or is it just on my PC? (Windows 7 x64 upgraded from Vista)

A:Problem with double-clik on desktop icon, must triple-click

No, I don't see that behavior. The doubleclick to open feature works fine on my system without a third click to change focus from any app that has it at that moment. It would be video driver failure, or a damaged system file doing that.

I have a EEE PC 901 netbook with Windows XP. For some reason I got the same issue: I must triple click instead of double click to open desktop icon or any folders and program. If I use a USB mouse, the same thing happens.
I did all the XP recommended updates before I used it. So I'm not sure it was the problem when the machine was just out of box.

I'm running XP Pro and for the last 2 months something has changed on shutdown. I open Start , Turn Off Computer, Turn Off and perform my normal one click but other than a whirring nose in the tower and the green light coming on momentarily on the floppy drive nothing happens. I have to go back and repeat the proceedure one more time for shutdown.

This also happens when installing a program and the window appears saying that it needs to reboot to install...when I click OK nothing happens. I have to go to Start, Turn Off Computer, and click on Restart.

I have also noticed that when my browser opens and I click on the dropdown menu for the stored URLs and it won't open on the first click, it flashes momentarily but it takes the second click to view. This only happens initially from then on the menu drops down on and subsequent single clicks work. The problem seems to have started around the time I started using Firefox as my browser.

Any suggestions?

Any assistance gratefully received.

WMP9 is giving me the following error message, although I've had no problems in the past, and I've checked via control panel that there are no exclamationmarks highlighting errors within system settings...

Any ideas folks? Here's the message:

It gives further info:

Does anyone know what I need to do to rectify this

What web browser are you using?
I'm sure there's a way to apply WMP as a plugin depending on your browser, maybe even in the browser's options.

A:Windows Media PLayer Problem

Hiya

This happened on my pc when I just recently installed Windows 2000. Not sure which version you're running, but see if this helps:

Control Panel | Sounds and Multimedia | Hardware tab.

Click to highlight your CD player, then click on Properties.

Click Properties tab, then make sure that Enable Digital CD audio for this CD-ROM device is Ticked. OK, apply and OK.

Regards

eddie
