Setting up a PPPoE connection between router & modem

Q: Setting up a PPPoE connection between router & modem

Hello, I think I'm experiencing a NAT networking problem, as most games I play complain that my NAT is moderate, or sometimes strict. I've researched this and found out it may be a Double NAT problem.

I've also researched two solutions for this: Disable NAT and DCHP on either the modem or router, or set up a PPPoE connection between the two. Can someone tell me which one is the easiest to do and how to do it?

Router: Linksys E3200 w/ Cisco

Modem: Motorola SB5102

Other Info: This IS a broadband connection, and I believe it is a DSL or Cable setup. I also know how to access the router settings, and how to disable NAT and DCHP. However, I do not know how to connect to the modem (I do know the default IP for it) and don't know how to perform a PPPoE connection, as this would be my first time.

Preferred Solution: Setting up a PPPoE connection between router & modem

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

PPPoE is for DSL connections... Go to the router and modem websites and download the instructions from there. It will explain how to connect and access the router

Earlier today I attempted to change the setting on my Westell 6100 modem such that it would simply bridge the connection to my Linksys WRT54GS router, basically involving setting the router to bridge only and turning DHCP off. Now I no longer get an internet connection through my router when previously the connection had worked perfectly fine before. I following the steps of cloning the MAC address to the router and have done the proper resetting steps (computer, them router, then modem) but I simply can't get an internet connection through my router. The process to set up simple bridging from the modem what supposed to end up with the internet light no longer turning on but the light turned back on following one of the resets.

Currently, I can connect to the internet through the modem just fine but I get nothing when I include the router. I'm not sure if there are some other settings I'm supposed to be changing as I can't seem to find anything past what I've already done when researching online. At this point I would just be happy reverting the settings I've changed but I don't know how to access the modem now that DHCP is off.

Basically, I'd prefer to be able to get the router working with these new settings but if that proves too difficult (as I've heard it can be when trying to get Westell modems to work with Linksys routers) I'd like to learn how to access the modem and change the settings back to what they were (prefer... I was looking for someone to help me with setting up a DDWRT Router for a PPPoE connection

Here are some details...
Router: Linksys WRT54G2
Connection: Verizon DSL (PPoE of course)
Current Router: Actiontec something (from 2005)...rather old

That WRT54G2 is a rather good router...much better than my Actiontec so I was hoping to use it to boost my signal in my house. I know I will have to continue to use the Actiontec but I am unsure of how to get the WRT54G2 to get and broadcast the internet signal from the actiontec

Ideas are welcomed

You are doing it the hard way. Just set it up from Internet Options in the Control Panel. You can also set it up from the Network Connections folder.

I have a Fiber Optic connection at home, where the Fiber Optic modem is connected to my WiFi router. The problem is that in order to connect to the Internet, I have to first connect to the WiFi (WPA2) and then dial-in via PPPoE into the Internet. I provide the ISP username and password in the second step.

I am using Windows 7, and have created the PPPoE connection as shown in the attached screenshots.

I have to connect to this PPPoE every time I need to connect to the Internet. I have had to configure this on all my laptops, and have to connect using each individual machine where I need an Internet connection. This is a big pain, as you can imagine. Further, I want to connect my Nexus One to the home WiFi Internet connection, but since it doesn't have PPPoE support, I can't do this.

I went to my router settings (3Com 3CRWDR200A-75), and found something that seemed promising. In the Internet Settings section, I saw a place to provide the PPPoE username and password.

However, this hasn't helped. I still have to connect using the PPPoE connection in Windows

Does anybody have any ideas/tips? Any help would be appreciated, as this is getting frustrating.

Since you're connecting from the router you can probably delete the PPOE connection from Windows.

Hi guys!

I'm having trouble configuring my router. I want it to auto connect to internet after the modem got disconnected. What I do now is everytime my connection is lost, I have to reboot my router. So is there a way to not reboot my router after it has regain the connection of the cable modem? I'm using a belkin router - N300.

A:Can I set the connection of PPPoE to be automatic on Belkin router?

More info needed to answer this question. Who is the ISP? what is the model of the DSL modem?? How is everything hooked up?? Generally speaking, a DSL provider gives/rents a DSL modem/router to the customer. if the connection is getting dropped that frequently there may be an issue on the ISPs end, an issue with DSL filter placement, phone line noise, etc. Post back please. Thanks!

Hi guys

I've just bought a D-Link Wireless Router and USB network card and, after loads of messing around, I've managed to connect to the Internet, but now it's really quite slow. I moved the USB card to another port which has increased the speed, but it's still not at the levels it should be (although Windows says I'm getting between 15 and 60 Mbps.

I tried altering so many setting just to get the Internet connected that it's quite possible I have changed something I shouldn't have. Or could it just be the speed of the USB, and if so, how can I improve this?

What kind of information do I need to provide to get some help on this?

Thanks in advance.

We have internet connectivity with a Westel Wirespeed router/modem that works just great; however, when we connect the Linksys router (connected according to instructions), we have no connection to the internet and we cannot even ping the Westel router modem. I've done a dozen or more of these in the last six months so I know the wires are connected correctly.

After forty minutes of my fighting this thing on my own, I spent another two hours and ten minutes on the phone talking to some Indian whom I had to ask over and over to repeat what he was saying. Finally, I gave up and hung up on the guy who was begging me for the third time in his poor enunciations not to give up. I'd had enough.

Are there any pointers anyone here can give me? I tried another Linksys router today, hammering away at the problem, trying every experimental setting I could think of and I didn't get anywhere with it either.

Ok gang,

As I'm sure you've guessed I'm kinda new here. I'll do my best not to embarrass myself.

I'm at my wits end trying to set up my new apartment with some sweet internets.

Here's the break down:

My landlord provides us with free internet.
The wireless is just beyond my computer's ability to detect.
I have a D-Link WBR 1310 Router hooked up to a high gain wireless antenna-yes, clear line of sight.
I have no direct access to our community modem or ISP.

These are the pieces I have for this puzzle put it has bested me. Anyone else care to help me arrange this jumble of equipment into something akin to a working connection?

About a week ago my Sky Sagem router decided to stop working.

I bought a new Asus RT-N56U router which turned out to be just a router on it's own, and later bought a Netgear dm111p modem to see if I could get them both to work.

I have entered a ISP username and password into both devices that is currently running on the modem/router I am trying to swap for the modem router combo.
I have put two DNS server ips into the router.
The router is currently using PPPoE and I set the modem to PPPoA.

Here's the router's WAN section

the LAN works fine

Any ideas why it isn't connecting to the internet?

A:Solved: Setting up Router and Modem

details for the modem are here
and the user manual here
in case we need to see them / refer to them

On page 9 are the lights
do you have the DSL and the Internet light on ?

This looks like its also a router and not just a modem
on page 57 - it talks about private IP address and DHCP
so its not just a modem

I would connect a PC directly to the modem LAN port
make sure you have configured the modem correctly

entering your sky username and password into the router
setting up
ISP Name .....................VPI/VCI Connection Type Encapsulation Mode MTU
Sky Broadband (BSkyB) 0/38 ..........PPPoA ................VC-MUX ................1400

Today I decided to move my modem-router over the phone cables box. After plenty of holes and plenty of UTP cable I got +2-2.5Mbit and I'm pretty happy about it.
There is however a small problem however.

In the position of the modem-router I installed a router and now I see no network (with the IP 192.168.1.x) from the network 192.168.0.x

Check the image to see more details

What's wrong the IP? I have definitely something wrong! Does any subnet need changing? Do I have to change the IP address of the modem-router that ends on the switch?

A:Setting up 2 modem-routers and 1 router, cannot see 2nd network

The second router needs to be configured as a WAP if you want them all to see each other.
Connecting two (or more) SOHO broadband routers together.

Note: The "primary" router can be an actual router, a software gateway like Microsoft Internet Connection Sharing, or a server connection that has the capability to supply more than one IP address using DHCP server capability. No changes are made to the primary "router" configuration.

Configure the IP address of the secondary router(s) to be in the same subnet as the primary router, but out of the range of the DHCP server in the primary router. For instance DHCP server addresses through, I'd assign the secondary router as it's IP address, for another router, etc.

Note: Do this first, as you will have to reboot the computer to connect to the router again for the remaining changes.

Disable the DHCP server in the secondary router.

Setup the wireless section just the way you would if it was the primary router, channels, encryption, etc.

Connect from the primary router's LAN port to one of the LAN ports on the secondary router. If there is no uplink port and neither of the routers have auto-sensing ports, use a cross-over cable. Leave the WAN port unconnected!

This procedure bypasses the routing function (NAT layer) and configures the router as a switch (or wireless access point for wireless routers).

Hi All,

I am having trouble setting up my new wireless modem/router.

I have been using a Voyager 105 USB Modem, which comes with software etc to connect upon pressing the link.

I have now purchased a Netgear DG834G Wireless Modem Router. To connect to this modem to adjust the settings, you have to enter an IP address of 192.834.0.1 to access the settings. When I type this into IE7, it says that I need to be connected to the internet. If i remove the ADSL wire to my old Voyager and connect to the internet via this unit, I can control the new router, and adjust the settings, but when I come to test these settings, obviously it does not work as the ADSL phone line is connected to the Voyager. When I remove the wire from the Voyager and into the Netgear, and press test, it says I need to be connected to the internet!

I am sure this is probably just some setting that needs to be changed. What I would like to happen is that I leave the Netgear connected all the time, so that every time I turn on the PC, it connects automatically, and I just have to open IE7 and its connected. With the voyager 105, when I click on IE7 it asks to connect to the internet and opens a dialogue box for dial up connection, I click connect, it dials '0, 038' and thn connects.

Pleas help me, I am going mad!!

Alright, I recently got a D-Link DIR 655 Router and a Vigor 120 Modem. From what I know, I need to set my router to do PPPoE (Seems simple enough, put in my username and password and the Primary and Secondary DNS servers are automatically found so nothing needed to be added there) However I couldn't connect to the internet after that, as far as I know I need to set up a bridge with my modem. I have the router and modem connected but I do not know what to set up in the modem itself so it forwards whatever the router sends to it. Sorry if I seem like I'm talking no sense. I'm stuck here.

basically it looks like:

main pc (connected to uplink port on router)

This is it. i know its not the best setup but i cant afford at the moment any other hardware and i would really appreaciate if someone could show me how the ip allocation would be for this setup. i tried changing the gateways, using the dchp from the router, and all types of addressing. any help would be really appreaciated.

hi guys,

i previously made a thread about buying a wirless router (http://forums.techguy.org/networking/916610-connecting-usb-only-adsl-modem.html). From that thread i have decided that im going to buy a router with intergrated adsl modem. i made this thread because i dont want to go through the hassle of returning a item bought of the internet. I had my eye on this router: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Belkin-Wire...ef=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1271498847&sr=1-3-spell. Firstly i wanted someone to check that this is a wirless router with intergrated adsl modem.

I also wanted to know how i will have to set this router up. do throw away my adsl modem that i have now? or i will i need to keep that connected? Would i need to insert my modem into that router or will i just need that all in one wireless router connected to my pc and thats it?

Im very confused about my broadband. i dont know whether it is dial-up or adsl. i know for a fact that i am using the speedtouch 330 adsl usb PPP modem, but under Network connection orange broadband is listed under Dial-up (i will try and post pictures to help explain what i mean). and also i have to use software to connect to the internet, and its programmed to connect to the internet by using the speedtouch 330 adsl usb PPP modem. When the router arrives will i be able to change this so that it connect using the new router?

Any help would be appreciated. i will try and upload images to help explain what im talking about.

If you have the modem in router mode then:
Plug the modem into one of the local ports of the router.
Only enable the DHCP server on the modem.

If the modem is in bridge mode then set up the DSL connection in the router WAN configuration. Enable DHCP on the router.

Hi everyone,

Thanks in advance for your help!

I need help setting up the connection from my Dell desktop to my Linksys router. I'm clueless with internet connection stuff! I have a ThinkPad that I have a wireless connection on (someone helped me set it up), and now I need to set up the Dell desktop with a wired connection to the same router. Both systems run XP.

You should know that just yesterday I had to delete a partition and reinstall XP on this Dell. I also reinstalled the system software from the Dell disk (Multimedia, Internet software, etc.).

I've tried to use the wizard to connect, but it doesn't seem to see the router. I've unplugged the modem and router and restarted the PC but it hasn't worked. The Dell has an ethernet card, but I can't remember if it had a disk when it was purchased and if I need it to set this up.

I will check this post often, so if you need more info just ask.

Thanks again!

When I plug my modem into the wall the VPN does not light on the modem, which I assume is because I have blocked access as we need to register all our devices using the MAC address. It would be helpful to determine if the problem is with the modem or the router.

Can you disconnect the router and connect directly to the modem.
Then leave that computer on overnight.

If there are still problems it would point to the modem.
Otherwise I would start suspecting the router.

A:Setting up AOL connection with Zyxel 660HW router

You should not have to set up AOL to talk to the router as AOL will try and make the connection automatically "using TCP/IP connection".
Set up the router using either the Zyxel Cd or Internet explorer via Account admin, password admin.
Key in your AOL screenname in full and the password - set the protocol according to where you are (Jeez I wish people would tell us where they live when they join!), reboot the router and then check if you have the ADSL connection with the ISP (AOL). If that works, start AOL and let it work through the setup to find the connection.

While the Dell was out of commission I ended up getting a Gateway laptop as a present. I have cable internet connection and to get on to the internet with my laptop all I do is connect the ethernet cable to the ethernet port on my laptop and I;m connected to the internet. Recently we got our Dell back and it's working good as new so my mom wanted to use it and get on the internet with it so I took the ethernet cable out of my lap and put it in the Dell but it can't access the internet. It says their is limited connectivity and it says I can try and repair it, so I click on the repair option but it says it can't be repaired because of something havcing to do with unable to renew my ip adress and DNS something. I am so confused about this. Anyway I just bought a router and and I would like to set it up so both of the computers can have internet access. And so I can take my laptop anywhere in our apartment and get on the internet. Tried setting up the router with the cd rom set up wizard but I'm quite confused, because during the setup it said it had to check for something but it seems that because the Dell is not receiving the internet signals it couldnt check what it needed to check for and it was asking me to manually put in my ip address and other stuff that ... Hey, I just want to say thanks to anyone who gives me any help and sorry for the termonology just I'm not the best with computers. So here is my problem, I have a router(lynksys WRT54GS.) I currently have a wireless connection set up and I was wondering how could I set up a connection through an ethernet cable. I have the cable connected from a port in the router to the computer I'm using now. Sorry for the question (sounds stupid when I read it over,) but like I said I'm not the best with computers.

So can anyone tell me how to get the ethernet cable as my main connection instead of wireless and how I could set it up?

Regards, Jack.

I can connect to the internet just fine if I run my modem straight to my computer. If I try to run it through my router, however, I can't get a connection. The internet light on the router does not light up and shows no signs of connection. The DHCP renewal doesn't do anything, either. I have tried multiple 'solutions' and am completely stumped. I have power cycled many, many times and reset the router to factory settings as well. I have tried cloning the mac address to match the computer and done all that I can (as far as my knowledge reaches). The tech support 'warranty' is also outdated, so there are no other options except for paying a ridiculous amount of money to talk to somebody. As such, any help on this matter would be GREATLY appreciated! I just got a new modem yesterday and that is when it stopped working through the router. This problem occurs with two different routers (both of which worked previously) so I don't think anything is faulty.

The modem is an ARRIS TM602G and the router is a Linksys WRT54G v.3

I will provide as much information as I can on request! I desperately need to resolve this issue.

Hi everyone.

I work as a tech consultant, and I am stumped on this one.

I am working at a clients house. She has purchased DSL sevice though a hole-in-the-wall company called superpa.net.

They have given me particular parameters to make the computer connect to their POS system.

Set IP Address:
Set Default Gateway:
Subnet Mask:
Preferred DNS Server: alternate
Well that is all fine a good and the computer connects just great. But my client just bought a new laptop and wants wireless. Wireless is simple, well it should be.

I got her a basic Linksys Wireless-G WRT54G Router. Nothing Fancy.

Now obviously, the router must use the same setting as the computer. So I went in to the Config, and made it a static ip with all of the listed above. I changed the computer back to the auto obtain ip address and dns server, but I HAVE NOTHING!

The modem shows a conncetion to the router, and her computer shows a connection the router, but there is NO activity between the modem and router. No activity=No Internet
I called Linksys, they told me to contact my ISP, then called Superpa.net, they said they dont do any support for wireless, only for one hardlined computer. They would sent someone out to fix it $200/service call + $60/hour... I said forget it.

Anyone with any suggestions or solutions... I would be much abliged!!!!

A:Router DSL modem connection problems

I trust that you power cycled the modem when switching from computer to router.

If the Linksys LAN defaults to 192.168.1.x, change it to 192.168.0.x.

EDIT: and clone the computer's MAC address to the router.

I am having a confusing and frustrating problem, my internet connection is dropping every half hour at least (sometimes more depending on my internet activity). This connection loss is happening when my modem resets and I have no idea why it's resetting. It may be due to some issue with my ISP where I don't have enough bandwidth to spare and I need to upgrade. i'm not sure. (I have Comcast high speed standard package) I am a gamer and I tend to have multiple applications running at a time, I play competitive online games and sometimes I stream music when I play. I also sometimes watch a live stream or YouTube video on my second monitor although it is usually not while I am gaming. I have tried everything I can think of.. I have called Comcast several times and called the companies of my router and my modem, and I have had a Comcast technician come and inspect the my cables inside and outside of my house. I am honestly at my wit's end and I need help..

My modem and router are both new and I highly doubt that is the issue:
Although maybe it is a problem with the modem and router communicating? I don't know.

SBC sent me a Westell Proline F90-610025-06 modem/router for my new DSL account. It works fine on one computer, but when I connected it to a second computer through a Linksys switch (ethernet cables), the second computer was not able to obtain a different local IP number from the Westell. Both computers show a address conflict error when they are both on. I pushed the buttons in the advanced section of the Westell menu, but could not find any way to expand the range of IP addresses available. The only option I could find was to change the lease time on IP addresses, or switch from PPPoE to PPPoA. I pushed repair connection in the computer LAN menu, but the computer was not able to get a different IP address. The Westell just kept giving both computers the same IP. This is my first broadband connection, so I am an amateur on connecting them.

Windows XP SP2 I tried powering everything down, and restarting in this order: Westell, Linksys, computers It didn't help. Manually inputting a different IP address on one computer's LAN connection didn't do anything either. How do I get the Westell to give different local IP addresses to different computers?

Tried searching for a solution but couldn't find anything specific enough to my issue.

Any help is greatly appreciated; wired network connections.

As of right now, I am able to connect to the internet but only directly from my modem to my main desktop. When I have the router connected... there is no network connection on anything connected to router, not even my main desktop. I then started to see if other devices such as PS3 and laptop would work connected directly to modem. No connection can be made; however, everything shows pc activity. The only connection i get to work is when my main desktop is connected directly to the modem. I believe it is a network settings issue, involving router and/or modem. I've tried doing the whole reset router/modem/pc, and disconnecting reconnecting cables solutions but nothing.

Thanks again for any responses and help.

A:Can’t use my broadband connection after setting up wifi router. Please Help.

It sounds like you just need to do a power cycle. To do that just follow these instructions:

First shutdown your computer. Next unplug the power cable from the back of the router and modem.

Second let everything sit for 1 to 2 minutes.

Third, plug the modem back in to the power cord. Let it power all the way up. Next plug the router back in, and let it power back up.

Last turn you computer on. Let it also power up. Next you will need to connect to a network. To do this you will need to make sure that your wifi is turned on. It usually turns on automatically, or there should be a switch to turn on.

After it is turned on you will see an icon near the clock that you can click on and then choose a network from. Once you are connected to a network open your browser and see what happens.

Hi Guys

I have my broadband with Talk Talk and have done for a while and it has been working fine. I recently got a laptop with WiFi so decided to upgrade the crappy little modem Talk Talk gave me to a wireless ADSL router. I bought a Linksys WAG354G Wireless ADSL router.

I swapped it out for my old one, plugged everything in and set it up. I got connected to the internet and everything was working fine, until I got home from work! When I got home the Internet connection light on the router was out, I checked the status by logging onto the router and it was down (see fig.1) When I clicked connect it seemed to connect OK so I thought nothing of it.

The next day, when I got home from work the same happened again. This time when I logged onto the router I saw the status as "down" but the 'connect' button was greyed out (see fig.2) so I couldn't connect. This is how it has been since so I put the old Talk Talk router back and Internet now works fine again. Can someone help me diagnose the problem please? It is driving me mad. Fig.3 is how the setup looks and Fig.4 is what I get from "IPconfig /all" command. Fig.5 is what the DSL connection status states when the internet is not connecting. NOTE: I've tried all the usual steps i.e. rebooting router, reconnecting cables, updating firmware.

Thanks in advance for any advise offered.

A:Solved: Setting up new router - internet connection keeps dropping

when you have rebooted ensure you enable some sort of encryption just so as know one can mess with the settings and change your admin password aswell.
You could also try setting up a static ip on the computer see portforward.com for details how to do this.
Download malwarebytes free version and give your computer a scan viruses do all sorts of strange things.
could be that it is going into some sort of hibernate mode as my neighbors does.
But then it should still be letting you back on.

I have this problem with my home wireless network for quite sometime. I am using cable broadband with the motorola modem and aztech router.

The problem is that my internet connection drops suddenly everyday... I will power off my modem and router, restart it but still cannot get internet access. after a few tries, it might come back...

I have tested my router at my friend's place and it is working fine. So i thought it's the modem problem, so i also went to test the modem at my friend's place and it's working fine too. I even bought new ethernet cable.

I do not know much about hardwares and wireless networking. I do hope I can find the problem and get it solved soon...

A:working router and modem but no internet connection

how many pcs are connected on your network and do they all work ok except yours ?

would you post the following tests when the internet is working OK, and then repeat ALL the tests when the internet disconnects.
Make sure you also indicate on the reply which tests are for what condition.

As you are connected by wireless, please include the xirrus screen shots for both conditions - see how below.

Please post back here the make and exact model of the router and the make and exact model of the modem.

Please make a note of the status of the lights on the modem and on the router when working normally - post that light status here.
Now when the internet disconnects make a note of the status of the lights for the modem and router here again. also note which have changed.

If you cannot access the internet with this PC, then you will need to paste the results into something like notepad and then copy onto a machine that can access the internet and post the results in a reply here.
Save the file to a USB flash drive or other removable media. Plug it into the working computer with internet access and copy the file and paste here.

About every 1-2 weeks my router loses the connection to the internet via cable modem. This has happened with 2 different cable modems (Netgear CM212 and Motorola Surfboard 5100) and also with 2 different routers (Netgear 614 and D-Link DI-524). When this happens the thing that usually fixes it is unplugging the router for several minutes and then plugging it back in again. I have Windows XP set to automatically detect the internet connection, and the router is set to use DHCP. Sometimes I also have to bypass the router and then put it back (so this could be partially a Windows problem?). Is there any way I can configure the router so it doesn't keep losing the internet connection? I have Comcast cable modem service.

Thank you.

I'd like to network two PCs, both running Me and have a broadband connection , probably with Tiscali. I need someadvice on what modem / router I need to get. If I ask a shop or ISP I get slanted information.

I'd like to have the option of possibly changing provider in the future. (I'm aware that AOL seems to need a particular modem, I'd probably never want to sign up with them anyway).

Please can someone recommend either a suitable modem / router or the features and specifications I should be looking for. What does ethernet and 10/100 mean anyway?

Many thanks in advance.

A:Modem / router choice for broadband connection

Depends on your budget and how your system is going to evolve over the next year or two i.e. you could get a modem/router with wired and wireless connection such as those made by Draytek or a more simple single port router such as those supplied by some ISPs and use windows inbuilt software to share the connection [but this requires the main PC on for the others to connect].
There is also the possibility of buying a modem/router with inbuilt hardware firewall which whilst more expensive is a good security feature.
Linksys also make some excellent modem/routers at a good price.
Perhaps a look round the price comparison sites such as www.dealtime.co.uk will help you find the cheapest of those suggested.

What does ethernet and 10/100 mean anywayClick to expand...

It normally just means its 10Mbps and 100Mbps switchable dependent on the speed of the network card attached to it i.e. if the card is only 10Mbps then that port will run at the slower speed.

OK, I'm having some trouble with my DSL connection. Right now it's working, but it's starting to slow down again which means that I'm soon to be disconnected totally. My provider says that nothing is wrong on their end (which I've confirmed with 2 neighbors) so it must be on my end.

My connection starts to work REALLY slowly and then eventually just quits working altogether. My "status" light on my DSL modem/router is completely black, the other lights are green, however, the LAN light is blinking furiously (I don't really know if it's always been that way or not... )

Anyway, I called the "tech support" people at my provider, and they walked me though some steps that seemed to alleviate the problem for now, but I want it stopped permanently!

I put in the "IP address" (shown on the IPconfig command prompt) into firefox's address bar and it pulled up the Zoom information page and I went to the system status portion like I was told to do, but there was NO IP ADDRESS!! NONE!! So we cycled the modem--nothing. We powered down the computers--nothing. I unplugged the ethernet cable from one port and moved it to another--PRESTO!! The internet works again!

I'm not even sure why this worked the way it did, because my laptop is wirelessly connected....why did changing the port of my desktop do anything? Or was it just chance? And how do I keep this from happening? Ideas?? Suggestions?? Anyone??

I'm having problems with my internet connection and modem/router. It's an Actiontec gt704wg, which serves as both a modem and wireless router. One computer is connected directly to the router and 2 others use wireless. The connection just randomly cuts off, the internet light goes blank, the dsl light flashes, and then it takes about 15-25 seconds to reconnect. I get tons of static on my phones, and the frequency of disconnecting goes up whenever i get/make a phone call. In addition, when I connect the other computers wirelessly, i get tremendous delays and more disconnections, and it takes several minutes to reconnect. The router's not old, about a year, and I've had no problems with it until recently. I've changed all my dsl phone filters, so I know it's not that. Can anyone help me?

A:internet connection, Router/modem problems

It sounds to me like something wrong with the router or, less likely, wireless interference. Looking at the second one first, do you detect any other wireless networks on your same or close to your channel? Any 2.4Ghz cordless phone?

Next I suggest looking for a firmware update for the router. And my final (at least for now) suggestion is to reset the router to factory default settings and reconfigure.
