Possible RAT, some questions

Q: Possible RAT, some questions

Hello, I have a reason to believe I could possibly be infected by a RAT or some other virus by someone I play an online game with. I think it may have been a java drive by or trough skype as an image file.
1. Could working youtube links as in they sent me links to watch a few videos off youtube that actually went to the site and worked give me a RAT from them? Maybe infected my browser? I know this sounds a bit silly so maybe not?
2. They sent me an image file they was downloaded to my computer. It wasn't an .exe file but an actual image could they have hidden a RAT in it somehow?
3 Or could they possibly have done something as we connected during the call? IP address?
4. I would like to just do a system restore on my computer. Can a RAT attach itself to the files i would like to save. Family photos, videos, game saves, music ont my ext. hd. I just don't want to infect another computer or my computer after I do a system restore.
These probably seem like very ignorant questions but I am concerned.

Preferred Solution: Possible RAT, some questions

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hi and some good advice for a RAT Remote Access Trojan (infected computer )........
I don't believe you fully understand the scope of having a RAT:
A backdoor severely compromises system integrity.
A compromised system may allow illicit network connections, disabling of security software, modifying critical system files and collection and transmiission of personal identifiable information without your consent.
I recommend that you disconnect this PC from the Internet immediately, and only reconnect to download any tools that are required.
NOTE : If you do any banking or other financial transactions on the PC or it if it contains any other sensitive information, please get to a known clean computer and change all passwords where applicable, and it would be wise to contact those same financial institutions to apprise them of your situation.
I recommend that you disconnect this PC from the Internet immediately, and only reconnect to download any tools that are required. If you do any banking or other financial transactions on the PC or it if it contains any other sensitive information, please get to a known clean computer and change all passwords where applicable, and it would be wise to contact those same financial institutions to apprise them of your situation.
Though the Trojan can be identified and can be killed, because of it's backdoor functionality, your PC is very likely compromised and there is no way to be sure your computer can ever again be trusted. Many experts in the security community believe that once infected with this type of Trojan, the best course of action would be a reformat and reinstall of the OS. If it were on my PC I would not hesitate for a moment to do so.
Please read these for more information :How Do I Handle Possible Identify Theft, Internet Fraud and CC Fraud? When Should I Format, How Should I Reinstall
Should you decide not to follow that advice, we will of course do our best to clean the computer of any infections that we can see but, as I already stated, we can in no way guarantee it to be trustworthy.
Should you have any questions, please feel free to ask.
External hard drives, or even large flash drives are very cheap, and you would be able to back up your important data onto there.
Let me know what you decide.
Personally, I would prefer that you take this to the Experts in the Malware and Virus Removal area.
Read Preparation Guide For Use Before Using Malware Removal Tools and Requesting Help starting from Step 6
Post back.once you decide or add a new topic to the Malware and virus forum area ..then we can lock this one to prevent more bad advice being added.
Thank you.
If you do not choose to treat it like a RAT, then only general infection removal programs can be used in this area...

1. Ran out of this space in my Q:Lenvovo - backup assigned partition.  14GB.  (My C: drive has 80GB free!) How can I fix this?  Is there a way to expand the partition without deleting it first?  Does Lenvovo or Microsoft or SSD manufacturer have a tool to do this where you just enter the amount you want to expand a partition to and it will adjust the other partition accordingly?  If not; I cannot delete the Q:Lenovo drive using file explorer or disk cleanup utility.  How do I remove at the original backup?  When I go to disk cleanup it shows blank the files; so it is a hidden file or subdirectory.  I even try signing on as System Administratin but forgot the password I created, it been so long ago and never use it.  LOL!   If I cannot do any of this:  There is an option to do a Windows 10 refresh but can you redirect it to a new SSD from the existing SSD? 2. Looking to get a new SSD but in NVMe configuration. a. Does my L450 support NVMe boot up? What type of NVMe does my Thinkpad support?  I thinking of getting the Samsung 860 Evo.b. I have a
HP Pavilion dv7t-1000 CTO Entertainment Notebook PC
64bit with Windows Vista Home premium
Recently I had a friend take it and wipe it to start fresh.
when I got it back it is still pointing to a bizarre path..?? (which is one of the reasons I wanted to start fresh. It points to:

%SystemRoot%\system32;%SystemRoot%;%SystemRoot%\System32\Wbem;C:\Program Files (x86)\CyberLink\Power2Go;%SYSTEMROOT%\System32\WindowsPowerShell\v1.0\

why would this be the case? When I got it back I see that some things like my extra monitor was already installed.. (Before I even hooked it up??) and some folders I had renamed example folder.OLD was still here. (and many other things that lead me to believe it did not get formatted correctly. (and could still have virus?)
He used my factory disks. (which I do have)
can anyone advise me on what is going on?
thanks so much!!

A:Environment Variables questions and format questions

I've had a bunch of HP machines. But I never used the restore. I'm not sure if it formats or just installs over what's there. It may leave files and folders that are in subfolders of programs that come bundled with the machine assuming it's data or something. The path looks fine to me. That %SystemRoot% stuff is just a way to use environment variables in case the system is not installed on C:\Windows.

If you really just want the OS and not the bundled software see the threads about ISO download for Vista. You can evaluate for 90 days perfectly legally. There are also tutorials how to extend the evaluation by 30 days.

Hey guys, you might of seen a post or two about me not able to get our domain to use GPO's, but its all fixed now. YAY !
(It was the DNS, incase anyone was interested)

but now i got a few questions, i'll start with:

1. Is there anyway to configure a client by just having them log onto the domain? e.g. Disable Security Center, Windows Messanger, Add a Registry hack. etc.

2. Is there anyway to view a list of all websites visited on the network with information, eg. Who was looking at it(which user), at what time. etc

3. Is there a way to record a list of all objects printed from our print server with information? e.g. User that printed it, time it was printed, how many pages, how many copys. etc.

4. Is there a way to delete start menu files/folders with a logon script?

5. I'm going to put "Deep Freeze" on the computers that are accessed and used by the public, but i've never used it, nor have any experience with it.
Does it cause any problems with normal operation of the computer? if anyone could give me some feedback on this, i'd love to hear it.

Also, is it possible to get more then just 6 Virtual Drives on a computer?

i mean, isn't there 23 possible drives?

Brand new user.

a. The new PC came with McAfee anti virus.
Should I use it ?

Is it as good as AVG, e.g., which I used on my old W7 PC ? Use them both ?

b. And, how do I turn on the "Defender" anti virus which I understand is part of
the W10 package ?

Would it interfere with McAfee or AVG ? How good is it ?

c. How do I turn on the Firewall; I'm assuming there is one like in W7 ?

Much thanks,

A:New W10 User Questions (Basic Questions, Please)

McAfee, AVG and Defender are all anti-virus programs and you should only run one. In fact Defender will get turned off when another one is installed.

Right click the Start button and select Control Panel.

Then select Security and Maintenance and under Security it will show your the status of the Firewall, Virus and Spyware and which program is running what.

Control panel also has links to Defender and Firewall.

That McAfee is a trial version and at some point you will have to buy it.

I have a Packard Bell P133, model D135. Eight megs of
RAM are on the motherboard. According to a search of
this model on a 'Memory' website, this model has FPM non-
parity memory. The machine had two 4-MB modules installed
when it was new in 1996, for a total of 16 MB at time of purchase.
Since then, I have added two 8MB modules to bring it up to
32MB. Two weeks ago, I replaced the two 4MB modules with
two 32MB FPM modules, which was supposed to bring it up to a total of 88MB. When I boot up, it only reads slightly over 81MB as passed....of course, on the System Properties 'General' tab, 80MB is listed. Can anyone tell me what might have happened to the other 8MB?

Another question: Would parity memory be compatible with
non-parity memory? I know from research, that most servers use parity memory...parity being described as a feature of
a module for error-checking. Would parity memory work OK with non-parity, but not the other way around? The reason I ask is, I have an opportunity to buy some used 72-pin, FMP parity modules at a good price, and I just wanted to know if the two (parity and non-parity) would mesh. I wanted to bring it up to the max for this model....136MB, providing the 8MB on-board memory is read. That was my own theory about the missing 8MB....that the on-board memory, for some reason isn't being read. Any thoughts on this?

Last questions: How critical is mixing speeds? Will 70ns
modules in one bank work with 60ns modules in another ... Read more

Hey guys, just have a few questions in regards to Vista x32 vs x64 as well as Direct x10 issues when it comes to gaming.

First off - What benefits do I get by running Vista x64 as opposed to x32 when it comes to gaming. I bought Call of Duty 4 as well as Bioshock, and will be buying some of the new games coming out such as Assassin's Creed and Far Cry 2. Are any of these games 64 bit games?

Second off - Do I get any benefit playing a game made for DirectX 9 on a DirectX10 platform? Or are the graphic increases only visible in games actually made for DirectX 10? Again, are any of the games I listed above made to work with better graphics in DirectX 10?

Thanks guys!

A:32/64 bit questions & DirectX 9/10 questions :)

I discovered your inquiry while I was attempting to answer questions similar to yours.

This isn't much help but try reading about Epic Game's 'Unreal' game engine. I'm reading the article on wikipeadia about this game engine. This is the game engine used for Gears of War and Unreal Tournament.

Any way, it seems that if your running the game in a 64-bit environment like Windows Vista 64 the game will be in 64-bit mode.

It uses Directx 10 and Directx 10 also seems to be in 64-bit mode depending on weather Windows is in 64-bit mode.

In related news, it seems that the 'Unreal' game engine and the 'Source' game engine (Used for Half life 2, etc) are optimized to take advantage of multi-threading or in other words optimized for multi-core processors.

Anyway, see what conclusions you come to...I'll post an update as I learn more.

I google-searched both messages and followed the "get rid of them" instructions to the letter; however, both are still there and are dug in tighter than ticks, refusing to go away without a fight.

The two worst offenders:

Hey can someone give me some advice on an ssd? as am thinking of buying a Kingston 64GB. and currently own one western digital green 1Tb and a Samsung 7200rpm hdd. here is my question:
If I install my OS on a 64GB ssd do I have to have to install all my programmes and stuff on the ssd or can I have it all on one of my larger hardrives? as I don't think a 64GB SSD will hold all my programmes and docs.

So the question is can I use the ssd as just an OS Boot drive?

And what would you say would be the best ssd out of crucial and kingston? I have noticed crucial ssd's go for a little more on ebay.
thanks in advance

A:SSD Questions

Yes, you can just have your OS on the SSD if you like, and keep your installed programmes on the 1TB - that is perfectly acceptable.

You can go about this in two ways:

1. Transfer your existing OS installation from the HDD to the SSD:
SSD - Install and Transfer the Operating System

2. Do a fresh/clean install:
Clean Install Windows 7

When you do a clean install to the SSD, be sure to physically unplug your 1TB Samsung until the installation is complete, to prevent some of the system files being installed to the HDD.

My own personal preference is Option 2.

I think the Crucial has a better performance and reputation than Kingston, hence the price.

This is a problem I got into a few months ago-I gave up. Here it goes again!
My computer is running XP home edition, plenty of memory, etc. I had some problems with the pre-installed Roxio cd writting software. After some research, I bought a product called ClickN' Burn--it generally works great. Part of the software package is a program from Veritas for DLA, or Drive Letter Access, I think. It is one of those programs that allows you to drag and drop to a re-writtable cd. I can't get it to work. I can't find any software updates anywhere. I get a general error message when I try to format a cd-rw and then when I turn off the computer, some program associated with Veritas hangs. The DLA program has been uninstalled for several months now, and the computer is generally working fine (except for some weird driver problem that crops up off and on).
Has anyone had any experience with Veritas or Clickn' burn under XP? Sometimes I think I should just uninstall the whole thing, bite the bullet and get Roxio CD Creator Platinum for about $100, but I am stubborn. Suggestions?

I love XP, but ever since I've upgraded, I've run into some pretty strange problems. The OS itself, for me, is the best bar none; but there's a couple of sticky points that I need some help on.

If you need further details, I'd be happy to supply them to you (whatever it is that you need)....

I have a Win ME desktop, a cable modem, a linksys 802.11b wireless access point router.....I also have a P2120 series Fujitsu lifebook I use wirelessly to connect to the internet (it has a wireless card installed and picks up my linksys signal). It is running Win XP Pro. I have tried to share files between the two computers to no avail, but that isn't my main concern really. I am about to buy a media center pc. I'm sure it will come with an ethernet card installed. Do I just buy a patch cable for ethernet & type 3 networks(this is what was on the box I saw) and plug it into my linksys (the second slot) and into the back of the computer for internet access? Or will the media center pc need a wireless card? Since both new computers are beyond Win ME maybe I will be able to share stuff? And lastly, assuming the sharing doesn't go off well....what kind of cable/software would I need to buy to connect the desktop I have now to the new one? There are tons of files I would want to move over. Am I confusing everyone or boring you? I hope not. I'm just hopelessly confused and most sales people I talk to seem to be in India who don't know a lot more than me or someone who feels that if I don't know such "simple" things already maybe I shouldn't be buying their product. Help! I welcome any and all advice. If you have questions about my systems or my garbled attempt to put this straight, feel free to ask.

3. How do you go about changing between half duplex and full duplex on a modem

A:3 Questions with XP

1. How do you expand Add/Remove Programs under Control Panel to show all programs such as Internet Explorer, etc

You cannot beyond clicking Add/Remove Windows Components, only shows a few items. Many Windows components such as Internet Explorer and Media Player are built-in to the OS, therefore, cannot be removed, which is why the governemnt is after Microsoft .

2. Also, MS Messenger use to greet me...now I am receiving no greeting..is there some box that needs to be checked/unchecked

MS Messenger can be removed using Add/Remove Windows Components. I would try installing it, reboot, and reinstall it.

3. How do you go about changing between half duplex and full duplex on a modem

It usually controlled by the protocol being used. TCP-IP is Full Duplex only. If you using a Async terminal emulator, such as HyperTerminal, it's controlled by the application.

Here some infor to explain half duplex:

It refers to the transmission of data in just one direction at a time. For example, a walkie-talkie is a half-duplex device because only one party can talk at a time. In contrast, a telephone is a full-duplex device because both parties can talk simultaneously.

Most modems contain a switch that lets you select between half-duplex and full-duplex modes. The correct choice depends on which program you are using to transmit data through the modem.

In half-duplex mode, each character transmitted is immediately displayed on your screen. (For this reason, it is sometimes call... Read more

I don't know about your keyboard problem but it sounds like to fix your first problem, you just need to clear your BIOS.

Unplug everything (mainly power cable) short the jumper for about 3-5 seconds, then return the jumper to the original position and plug it back in. Or unplug everything (mainly power cable) and take out the battery (looks like a watch battery) and leave it out for about 5-10 seconds, then replace it.

In another thread I believe someone brought this question up.

Question #1: Say I have a Athlon XP 2800 processor with a 333MHz FSB. The RAM that I buy is 400mhz PC3200. Would I have a problem with this setup and would I be running some sort of bottleneck?

In the near future I plan on building a new PC and this is a question I want to address before I do so, because I don't want to spend $400+ on a Athlon XP 3200 with a 400mhz FSB when I can get the Athlon XP 2800 with a 333mhz for only $168.00.

I think the Asus A7N8X only supports up to a 333mhz FSB (166x2). Can someone confirm this?

Edit: Nevermind. A7N8X indeed only supports 333MHz processor FSB.

Parts "in question"
AMD Athlon XP 2800 "Barton" 333 FSB

Corsair XMS Extreme Memory Speed Series 256MB PC3200 400mhz w/Heat spreader (will be running 2 of these for dual channel)

Question #2: Which Athlon XP is the best overclocker? I *think* I heard someone say the 3000+ would overclock to 3.6GHz? (or something like that). Sounds pretty crazy but I'm not 100% sure what I heard.

A:FSB Questions

Asus A7N8X v2.0 supports 400 fsb.

Answer #1. No bottleneck. You could overclock your cpu by decreasing the multiplier settings (to avoid too much overclock) and increasing the fsb settings to 400 fsb. That will eliminate any bottleneck and give you a fast system at low cost.

Answer #2. Athlon XP 1700+ (soon to be discontinued).

AMD XP1700 JIUHB - Hexus

Not as fast as Athlon XP 3000+ when overclocked, but a damn sight cheaper.

Hey guys, first time poster here.
I just got myself a flash new Toshiba a500 laptop with windows 7 home premium on it. after getting everything to my liking it occured to me to check weather i was running 32 or 64 bit, as it turns out im running 32, and thus some of my nice expencive ram isnt being used. the laptop didn't come with an install cd, but i read something about these laptops having a 64bit restore partition (edit: heres what it says on the toshiba website: Genuine Windows? 7 Home Premium (32bit) (includes recovery partition for Windows? 7 Home Premium 64bit)). could someone please tell me if there is any way of changing to 64 bit without needing a cd (i dont care if it means i loose my stuff, as it a new computer i havent put much on it yet.)?

Thanks for your help fellas

A:OEM questions

To "upgrade" to 64 bit - however you do it - requires a complete new install. Usually recovery (restore) partitions only have whatever the PC was delivered with and will only restore the PC to the original factory setup. You can attempt a reinstall and see if has an option but I suspect if the PC was delivered with 32 bit then that is what the restore will have.

If you want 64 bit, along with a Win 7 CD you will need 64 bit device drivers (some drivers are bit specific). Check the Toshiba downloads for your specific model to see if they have 64 bit drivers before you go any further. If there are 64 bit drivers maybe you can convince Toshiba to provide a Win 7 install DVD. The "Retail" Windows 7 DVD's (upgrade or full versions) have both 32 bit and 64 bit on them and you select which one you want when you install.

I am told that to upgrade from XP Pro to Win 7 64  I need to do a clean install.  Format the C: drive, and then install Win 7 64.  My concern is what happens when I do that.  Will the now BIOS-only machine recognise the DVD, and install Win 7 64 from that ?

There never was an "upgrade" path going from XP to Win 7...even using the upgrade version of Win 7 results in a clean install.
You have to make the optical drive the first boot device in the BIOS...if that's what you want.  It doesn't happen automatically.
If you have a legal Win 7 install CD...the necessary software for deleting existing partition and creating new one...is on that disk, along with Win 7 install files.

I was just wondering if anyone would be able to help me understand what the "Computer Wizards" out there are looking at when they see my HJT Log. I see that there are a number of repetitive things like the C:\WINDOWS\system32\svchost.exe, why are there numerous accounts of things like that. And if there is any "touch-ups" I could do to my HJT Log. Just curious, Ashley!

Are the D & E drives hard drives?

I was having a discussion with someone about Hard Drives and they said the D & E drives are hard drives, but my D & E drives are for discs and USB's only.

So are they hard drives?

Once again I have some questions about my SSD. I have a 256 GB Samsung 840 Pro SSD. I have my user folders on a 2 TB Seagate SSD. I'm looking to optimize the performance. In my bios, it says that my system boots in AHCI mode (See images). The registry also has the appropriate value set to zero. When I open Samsungs software, SSD Magician it says that I'm not booting in AHCI mode (See images).

My other questions are about OS customization:This software recommends that I allot 23.8 GB of space for over provisioning. I have plenty of space left on the drive so do you think this would be a good idea or should I adjust the amount?
I have 16 GB worth of RAM. What would be good parameters for my virtual memory or should I just let windows handle it?
Should I deactivate Prefetch/Superfetch?
Should I activate Write-Cache Buffer Flushing?
How should I adjust System Restore?
Some of these settings I can judge for myself, but I'd like to hear other people's opinions on them.

I don't know if over-provisioning is necessary, so I'll let someone answer that who has the definitive answer. However, I thought the days of needing to over-provision were long gone.

I just uninstalled Norton and installed AVG.

AVG says that the next tests and updates will be on 12/21 at 8AM. Does that mean I need to be sure my computer is online then, or, if it is not, will the tests and updates take place when I do go online after that time?

AVG says about the rescue disk that it "enables you to scan and clean files on your computer in MS-DOS mode (at the command prompt). This is often necessary when removing virsues on computers which have sharing violations or insufficient user access rights. It is also useful when your computer's system areas have become infected."

My computer doesn't share with any other computer and I guess I have all the user access rights available. I presume that if my antivirus programs work right I don't have to worry about the system areas becoming infected.

So my impression is that, while there may be some remote chance of needing the rescue disk, it is indeed remote. Am I wrong about that?

The rescue disk program says the disk should be updated whenever AVG is updated. That seems like a lot of trouble. That's why the question above.

I have some questions about Spybot S & D?

1.) What is the Immunization feature? When I click on it, I get an info page that says among other things, "Perminently running a bad download blocker of IE." than it says, a preventative blocker to help install of bad downloads is installed. Than a check box is checked that says something about preventing bad downloads in IE. What does all this mean?

2.) How do I get the Guardian Feature enabled? I don't see it here.

3.) What is the warning message that I get when I click on the immunization feature? It says, something like, " 0 products blocked, 2000xxx+ protections possible, please immunize. But the disclaimer is that this feature just gives you added protection from what the program already offers.

PS. BTW, I also have Norton's Internet Security 2004, which contains an excellent pop-up blocker

This looks like an AMAZING deal and a great price. 1.5TB(Enough for what I do really...), and as fast as a Raptor in certain things.(According to many reviews, this is ACTUALLY TRUE!, but only during certain operations)

It's specs are excellent and price is flawless. It has 750 5 star ratings, but...350 bad star ratings. I read ALOT about the Barracuda and it has some serious issues I've read with locking up and stuff. I don't know if they've been completely resolved by now, though. =/

Seagate also has a reputation as the King of HDD's...

Western Digital is also another very well known name for HDD's. It's 10$'s more, it's specs are the same, but I read it's not quite as fast as the Barracuda in some respects, but I also read about a variety of RAID issues with it, so much so it can cause the Drive to die!

What do I do? They're the only ones on Newegg with 1.5TB HDD's out, at great prices, but both listed as having serious flaws!

Thank you.

I apologize for not being able to post my HJT log here (I am at work, log is at home), but I just had a question about one of the results....

The result was a Proxy Setting of "localhost:1066". I checked my IE, and there are no proxy servers set up at all. I can browse the web and everything, no errors, but this entry struck me as odd. I just wanted to check here first before I fix it.

I do have NIS installed. Would that cause this? Anyone know what port 1066 is normally used for? I know port 8080 is usually reserved for proxy settings.

Thanks in advance!

Hi guys,

Just a quick question. With my G/B EP45-UD3P that I'm getting next week, and I'm also looking at getting Corsair Dominator 4GB 1066Mhz DDR2 RAM with it. However, the motherboard supports 1.8v RAM, and the dominator is 2.1v. I can change the voltage in the BIOS to support my RAM, and it would all be fine, right?

Also, currently my OS picks up the 4GB I currently have in my PC and says only 2.5GB is usable? I am running Windows 7 RC x64, and I read somewhere that my GC945 Chipset that I currently have limits to 3GB RAM, but why would it be at 2.5GB? Would it be because my XFX 9800GT is using 512MB Graphics? When I get my next motherboard (P45 Chipset), would this still occur?

Finally, I currently have 4GB 800Mhz G.Skill RAM installed. Would there be any noticeable difference between 800 and 1066Mhz?

Hey All,

Was wondering if someone can give me some clarity on this issue about RAM and backwards compatability. As I understand it, PC2700 can be used for PC2100, even if all the 2100 modules are swapped with 2700. Ditto PC4200 and PC5300 and the new DDR3 standards as well.

Can someone confirm?

Hi Tech Guy and every one!
I got some few questions.
I let ya know about that i got a Windows XP with these secure systems Ad-aware,F-security 2003.
I am unsure and abit of afraid of viruses, spyware,Hackers and keyloggers.
Ok now to the question.

Number one.F-security is a anti-virus and a firewall but i am unsure if it really
is protecting me i have like goten 6 kind of trojans but it seem like it have deleted them, but i dont know if it hold hackers away.

Number two.Ad-aware delet spyware. When i take a recommend search i see all of them and delet them but it seem like the same comes back again after i have been on the internet.

Number three.Keylogger i dont know if i am affected by one but i am not sure if i am how can i know that i am affected?

Sorry fore my bad English not my first languish.

A:Some questions.

Number 1:-
is you f-secure upto date? this is an antivirus and will only protect against latest infections if fully up-to-date.
if its not upto date and you do not have a subscription for updates run this online test http://housecall.antivirus.com/pc_housecall

Number 2:-
if you get spyware from visiting a website, clean with ad-aware then go back to website you will get the spyware again - all ad-aware does is clean up after the fact.

two programs which may help stop spyware from getting on the PC are:-
spywareblaster = http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareblaster.html
spywareguard = http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/sgdownload.html

also another good spyware program is spybot

download, update and run spybot
http://spybot.safer-networking.de/ or
http://tomcoyote.org/SPYBOT or

then you need to make sure these programs - ad-aware/spybot/spywareblaster/spywareguard are all upto date each week - including your anti-virus

Number Three:-
post a hijackthis log here to see if you have a keylogger

download and copy hijackthis to its own folder, it makes backups so keeping seperate can be useful - run hijackthis

scan only DO NOT FIX ANYTHING post a log and await advise from one of the many experts in this forum.

say i press control+alt+delete, and want to close some of the programs/processes i have running... how do i know which ones are ok to close and which ones the computer needs to run?

and a less important question:

i mainly use my computer to use photoshop, and i listen to music on winamp while i use photoshop. lately, after a few minutes of play, winamp starts getting really crackly sounding. i close it and restart it and then its fine for another few minutes. any ideas what could be going wrong?

A:2 questions

Answer to first question is what OS are you running, and what do u have loaded on ur computer...run HJT and post it in here and let us see what runs and then we can tell u or not what processes can and cannot be terminated.

To your 2nd question....could be the song itself, or maybe something else is playing with sound, don't know unless u can tell us what u are doing at the time...well to me that is, there is a number of things.

I'm looking to update my 4 yr old computer with a SSD. It's a Dell Dimmension E520, Intel Core2 6300 1.86GHz, 4GB RAM, Win7 Ultimate x64. Dell's website, via service tag, indicates that I can't add SSD... I am skeptical. I'm def a novice when it comes to my hardware. Hoping someone can help me with some info...

-Can I run a SSD?

-What specs do I need to know in order to buy the correct SSD?

-How large a SSD do i need to run Win7/IE on it, while leaving my media files on old HD? 60,80,100GB?

Thank you..

A:SSD Questions

You can run just OS and programs easily on an 80GB. Just install the os and the programs used frequently on the SSD. Other programs that are not used very often on the spinner. I have both an 80GB Intel and a 90GB Vertex2. I have no space isues with either.

I would find out from Dell why you can't run an SSD. Dell has some Motherboards that will not give you the fastest speed. I know because I have one. It is in the Dell chipset, mine is an H57 chipset which is probably different than yours. However, even though the best speed will not be there, my Dell will run on the SSD. Try to get them to tell you why you can't run an SSD.

I have many very dumb questions. My computer skills are just average. Heres my info first.

Acer Ultrabook 8.1 Windows, 4 GB Ram, 320 HDD 247 GB free left.

( The Questions )
I want to try ONLY, Linux on a USB. I dont want to install Linux on my system, just to try it. I can use USB just fine.
I prefer my OS stay Windows 8.1
I have read alot on this. But still i dont no what iam doing.
Should i just forget about Linux alltogether ? It would be good to have it incase my Windows 8.1 messes up. When 8.1 works its great. But many times it hasnt.
First i realize i need to download the Linux Installer. Is this installed to C: drive only ? And Linux Mint installed to the USB to try it out ?
Thay say BIOS boot order needs to be changed. I no how to get in BIOS just fine.
The final and most important question to me is. If i was to change boot order to 1 for USB. Will Windows 8.1 still boot up if needed or do i change BIOS back to the way it was before ? Thanks Chuck

Merry Autumn everyone to everyone that is in the autumn equinox!

I'm right now about a third or so of the way complete with rebuilding and modding my computer case right now, and now I'm at the point of modding half the case for the PSU and other items.

So I have questions about the power supply in general. I'm looking at a roughly 700 watt max as I will be using AMD's new APU graphics chip (Radeon 7650) in CrossFire with the Radeon 7870. I will also have a total of 13 or 14 SATA connectors: 8 hard drives (5,200-5,900 RPM) in a RAID 5 array, two internal 2.5" hard drive SATA connections as well as two external 2.5" connections, and maybe one or two mSATA external connectors. I was wondering if I can use a couple of spare SATA power cable from my previous PSU (the old and new PSU's are modular) and use those with the new SATA power cables. I will be splicing and cutting and soldering and modding the cables so they are pretty much built into the case in the front as well as the external ones. I don't know for sure if I'm tampering with the gods of electricity and power in doing so, because I don't really want to have a power problem when I'm gaming only to find out I needed either more power or less SATA connectors; which would be problematic as I will need a LOT of SATA power connectors to future proof my build for at least five or eight years.

Hi everyone. I'm back with more questions but this time it's about motherboards & monitors.

Now that B3 versions of Gigabyte MBs are appearing @ Newegg & TigerDirect I've been trying to balance what my needs are & what's available. I'm basically doing a PC re-fresh. I do video editing & other graphic work that is has become more of a hobby nowadays. But, I do like a good running PC & Win 7 looks like it's worth an upgrade.

I've narrowed it down to 2 motherboards: Gigabyte GA-H67A-UD3H-B3 & GA-P67A-UD3-B3. The best I can figure, the basic difference is "H" versions have built-in graphics & "P" versions accept a wider variety of RAM, namely faster - up to DDR3-2133 (Max RAM for the GA-H67A-UD3H-B3 is DDR3-1333). I have read this artical, http://www.bit-tech.net/hardware/memory/2011/01/11/the-best-memory-for-sandy-bridge/1. I'm not a gamer but AVCHD video rendering could use the added speed. The overall number of ports (USB) & types are different, too. As I recently purchased a new ATI 5570 graphic card (Odd monitor behavior since Windows 7 64-bit install.when I 1st upgraded to Win 7, I think the "P" model would be OK. But, maybe there's more to it than that.

Also, I'm looking @ 2 HP monitors; HP 2310e 23" Diagonal Ultra-Thin WLED Monitor & HP 2311x 23" LED Monitor. I've read that the 2310e has the glossy type screen (I know some hate glossy type but I do like it) & the 2311 is a non-glare scr... Read more

A:More new PC questions.

The H67 chipset apparently only supports RAM frequencies up to 1333MHz, as you say.

It also doesn't support overclocking for the CPUs with unlocked multipliers (I5-2500k and I7-2600k). A mild overclock (to, say. 4.2GHz) may have more effect on video editing than the memory clocks. As I haven't done any video editing, I can't speak from personal experience.

I don't know whether you'll be happy with a TN monitor. I have a Samsung 245BW (24" TN, 1920X1200). I've mostly gotten used to its limitations. It does make color banding in some video, but I believe that it's a 6 bit display. (That's 6 bits per RGB color, 18 bits overall.)

Hello to u all

Mcafee found two trojans in c:/system volume information file and deleted them. After that i found this file and tried to open it but access was denied to me.A number of strange things have happened after that:

I opened winamp to listen to some music and to my surprise, instead of the usual winamp skin there was a skin of a snake's head smiling at me!!!Music was playing normal despite all that.
I had to reinstall winamp to get rid of the snake.
Another thing ater that was that both of my back speakers stopped playing and no matter what i tried from the settings>control panel>sounds and audio devices>speaker settings>advanced nothing seemed to help. then one day i accidendly pulled out a cable from the subwoofer and !!! both back speakers start playing again!!!
The thing is this that is wrong because that cable is from the back speakers!!So when i put it in they stop playing and when i take it out they play!!!????????
Hmmmm did i mention that all my mp3 file disapeared three days ago? Thank god system restore did the job otherwise 20GB of music would be down the drain.

Enough with the serius problems

Does anyone knows how can i delete percision time and G start up from my system configuration utility start up tab? Its there although i've taken it out of my system(hope so).
