I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I am developing an ftp client in VB. I have it working very basically, but I already encountered a small problem. I have a textbox that outputs all the local commands, server responses, etc, like you will see in any other ftp client. I would like to have each line of text a different color but am unsure of how to do this in a standard textbox.

If you know how to do this it would be very helpful. If I should use a different control that already has this feature built in, then that would be ok as well.

Hi, all.

Call me masochistic if you will, but I wish to attempt writing a text adventure game in Visual Basic 6.0, as this will encourage me to learn all about saving data to disk and all sorts of data manipulation. What I am looking for to get started are sites that contain relevant tutorials on this particular language and subject. I've tried loads of searches on google, but most cater for Java, C/C++, Python, etc.

I appreciate that VB is not usually associated with gaming, but I AM a masochist, after all .

Any ideas gratefully appreciated.

I know vb. if you wanna reach me you can at [email protected]

If you are writing an adventure game in vb, you could actually render a really simple on just about as easily than writing a text based one, and it most certainly would be more organized. Its pretty simply to bind and render such things. You should also check out www.planet-source-code.com, it is the ultimate resource for learning and using any Programming language.

I am trying to build a basic text editor for a course project, and I tried searching online for help and I can't find my problem.

So I have the ability to open .txt documents though the program, and am able to save. However, I'm running into a few problems.

When I try to save a new document (or using Save As...) it refuses to add an extension to the file, even though the SaveFileDialog is set to do so.

My other problem is the MesageBox that has the yes or no buttons to save the unsaved file before opening a new one or closing the program isn't showing up.

I have included the code. If you need any screenshots, please let me know.

Imports System.IO
Public Class Form1
' Class-level variables
Private strFileName As String = String.Empty 'doc filename
Dim blnIsChanged As Boolean = False

Sub ClearDocument()
'clear contents of textbox

'clear document name
strFileName = String.Empty

End Sub

'OpenDocument opens the file and loads it for editing

Sub OpenDocument()
Dim inputFile As StreamReader 'object variable

If ofdOpenFile.ShowDialog = Windows.Forms.DialogResult.OK Then
'retrieve file name
strFileName = ofdOpenFile.FileName

'open file
inputFile = File.OpenText(strFileName)

I have programs that use some text files. I want to distribute my program so that the files are installed, in an appropriate folder as well as installing the program preferably via a single double-click . Currently I am publishing the program using "Publish" with the " will be installed from CD" option.

Is there any way to get the "Publish" feature to include the necessary text files in the distribution? Or is there an installer program I can get or buy that will do the job. Obviously there must be since lots of software is distributed like this.

A:Visual Basic 200*: including text files when publishing

One of the most widely acclaimed simple installer-creators is probably NSIS, which could pretty easily bring out the text file you want. There is sometimes a problem with VB because it doesn't include all the actual features in the build's .exe file, so you have to manually check that you have everything. Still it comes out about half the size, can look much nicer, and won't stick a .NET license agreement and demand a .NET install. It's what I use, but if anyone else knows of something better I'd like to know too.

Sorry if I picked the wrong spot. Nothing seemed to match my inquiry. I am having a problem with my wordpad retaining rich text when using the copy/paste feature. It was working until recently when I had to reinstall windows. I believe it may just be a feature I have not selected, but for the life of me I can't find the option, and I suppose it could always be something up to no good on my system causing this. What I am trying to do is copy and paste text directly to a text editor just as you see it, so that I can then paste that text into an ebay listing tool. I can't just paste it directly, it won't let me (thanks firefox) without causing lots of formatting issues. If anyone knows a simple way to do this (note I do NOT want to deal directly with coding and html, just the rich text that you see normally), please share! Thanks

I guess my question can be asked in two ways, the short way and the long way.

Here's the short one:

Can you do everything that you can do with VBA with VB?
The long one is:

I need to be able to write programs that conceivably invovle web forms/web services (VB right?), Microsoft SQL Server 2002 (VB again right?) but also Microsft Office applications like Excel and Access (VBA??). Does that mean I need to learn both Visual Basic and Visual Basic for Applications? In my initial research into Visual Basic I've learned that Visual Basic for Applications is a subset of Visual Basic, so shouldn't that mean that Visual Basic, being the parent and more powerful than Visual Basic for Applications, is capable of performing all of the functions that Visual Basic for Applications does?

Thanks for your help,
([email protected])

A:Solved: Visual Basic vs. Visual Basic for Applications

I do not know VB at all, only some VBA. The main difference is that VBA has words specifically for the applications, a classic exanple would be the
both range and .End(xlUp) are for use in Excel.

Hello, Am not totally computer savy, evident by the fact it took me five minutes to find the button to submit a query, but enought about me. I do not know when this started happening, am sure must have been something I did, however, all messages I receive from my friends, in plain text format, turn up as garbled coding in the remarks section. I can go to the attachments and open and see, i.e. jpg file, pps display, wmv, etc. Any files received in rich text there is no problem. Only the plain text files. Surely there must have been a setting I messed up?? Would appreciate any help. Will say this is the fourth forum I have asked this question on with no results. So still hoping!!!

A:Oe 6 Text Versus Rich Text

If someone tries to send anything other than a text message...in text format...it probably looks like junk. It is a very limited format, with little formatting and other options available. Pure and simple.

The text format is not like the .doc format...pictures, etc. cannot be included as part of the message. This format is only for word messages, no frills.

Rich text (.rtf) is entirely different and more flexible, allowing use of graphics, text, and formatting options not found in the .txt format.

Soooo...if it were me, I'd go back to the sender and see what the garble might be.

When I access my Hotmail account using Firefox and I want to reply to an incoming email, and I click to enable the color and graphics extension sometimes I have no problem. Other times, either the email to which I am replying disappears or the html coding appears in it; the coding appears only in the email to which I am replying and not in the text I myself type as my reply. The color and graphics extension works fine when I am just composing an email and not replying to one.

I don't have this problem if I access Hotmail using IE6 and use Rich Text.

Does anyone have any suggestions as to what is wrong and as to how I might correct the situation? Thanks, grandpaw7

FYI, I'm not an expert in this area, I am simply sharing my experience so that others can avoid the frustration I felt. I just finished a bitter struggle to the end to reconcile the differences between my computer and a mysterious problem I was having using the Rich Text Editor on this forum. Okay, so that sounds a bit melodramatic.The story goes like this: I was experiencing two problems using the editor on here with RTE enabled (in my settings) and one with it turned off. FYI, I'm using FF10.After entering the full editor from Fast Reply, or after clicking Preview Post, everything in the editor would be formatted just as in the preview. Well, almost everything. Some things were wrong. That means that, instead of plain text with BBCode and emoticon code, in the EDITOR I saw the preview of the codes, and I couldn't edit the coding.
If I used list tags and either went from Fast Reply to the full editor, then previewed once; or if I previewed twice, some of the list tags would be displayed incorrectly. Usually the first one or two * would be okay but, after that, they'd be replaced by <li>. When I paid close attention, I noticed that the first time there was a preview in the editor, the affected list tags showed up as bullets, not numbers, and the second preview both the preview and editor showed <li> for the broken * tags.

There was only one way to fix this problem. Before pressing "Use Full Editor" or Preview Post, I had to cop... Read more

Hello everyone. Right now im doing a proyect in Visual FoxPro v. 6.5 where i am using a control names MAPX.OCX, this is used to display maps and its cordinates. I have already started to use this control, but im a bit stuck. I read in the manual of the control, but it is made for Visual Basic and C++ and I have very little experience using Visual FoxPro.

The instructions of the VB as the following:

Private sub Globessymbol_click()
Dim top20cities as mapxlib.layer
set top20cities = map1.layers("ciudades")
top20cities.style.symbolbitmapname = "x.bmp"
end sub

The Map1 is the name of an OLE object that identifies the MAPX.OCX and this also has some layers to put the name, icons, lines, etc. This layers are the ones i am having trouble codificating it in Visual FoxPro.

does someone here have any knowledge of how to do this? i'll thank very much the help.

A:Solved: Cannot open .RTF (Rich Text File)

Off hand I don't believe it's a permission on your computer so much as it is a permission with Outlook. You may want to mention this to your IT team at your job or the system administrator. Outlook can be set on the server end to block particular types of files (like rtf files) or to restrict access to which files you can open and what you can do with them.

When you said you opened it on a co-worker's computer, was this under your account (i.e. you logged onto his computer with *your* account) or was it opened via his email account and under his login name?

The fact that you were able to get it open on your computer if you used your yahoo account suggests it's not a permission set on your particular computer. If it was, you wouldn't be able to save it via Yahoo either.

My recommendation is to talk to whomever manages your company's email accounts to see what permissions are set up on your account. Hopefully that fixes it. If not, let me know.

Hi ;

I am having problems setting Jarte Word Processor as my default rich-text program. It was all okay earlier in the week but I noticed the other day that all my .rtf files would all suddenly open in MS Word '07. I tried to change the settings in the Folder Options>File Types, select .RTF extension>Change>select Jarte from OpenWith box>OK.....but the Folder Options dialogue box does not show the "Apply" button. So when I close it all .rtf files "still" opens via MSWord compatibility mode.

Even if I set it to open to WordPad via the same procedure it "still" opens in MSWord.

I remember I installed some critical updates which I dowloaded manually from the Microsoft site prior to that. They are:

Microsoft Security Bulletin MS10-033/MS10-042

Previous installed updates prior to this .rtf problem (Note: no problem with the .rtf opening in Jarte Word) are:

Microsoft Security Bulletin MS10-035/MS10-034/
KB982381- Security Update for IE8

I tried to do a system restore prior to installing the updates but it was still the same behavior.

Tried NirSoft's FilesTypeMan freeware to change default program to open .rtf file from MSWord to JarteWord but instead it opened using WordPad . Still "not" JarteWord.

what program were you using to open it.

You need a word processing program like word, lotus or word perfect.

You should also be able to open in notepad.

If it is full of garbage then it's not a rtf file, it's probably a word .doc that has just been renamed and not saved as .rtf

Hey all.

The situation is: I would prefer to use Firefox all the time but it doesn't sit well with Hotmail's rich-text editor. If you access Hotmail via FF and then try to reply a mail, the included original text turns into plain-text HTML code.

So I try to turn off the rich-text editor by using IE6 (WinXP SP2) to access Hotmail, but I can't. The same pop-up would come up warning that formatting will be removed from signatures and draft messages, and the rich-text toolbar would remain in place.

I looked at this post:

I've mailed MSN support and followed their suggestions (changed security and advanced options back to default) and still no luck. Am currently waiting for their follow-up mail.

I've replicated the problem on two different PCs and using two different Hotmail accounts. So I can safely assume that it's to do with the programming of that site?

Just want to put this out here to try my luck with you guys. Thanks.

p.s. Yes have considered moving away from Hotmail but I thought that there has to be a solution. M$ can't possibly force ppl to use HTML in Hotmail right?

My manager wants me to always send emails in Rich Text Format. The problem is I am working as a tech support guy and we get automated emails in our Support mailbox in Plain text format whenever support calls are logged. So when I pick up the emails in our Support mailbox, I sometimes forget to change the format from Plain text to Rich Text before acknowledging the email. This irritates my manager because he is adamant that I always acknowledge emails in RTF. Is there any software that can alert me that the email is not in RTF before I send the email? Note: I have already set to Rich Text the option Compose in this message format.

Help would be easier if we had an idea of just what email program you are using....
