Windows 7 Super Unstable Download Speed

Q: Windows 7 Super Unstable Download Speed

Hi guys, please I need help!

When I'm downloading (with Firefox 3.5) the download speed is very very unstable. My connection speed is 3.2Mb, and even when i'm downloading a file with good providers like Ubuntu my speed is like: Start at 80kb..100kb..3.2Mb then 3.0..3.1...90kb, 128kb..200kb..287kb..3.2Mb..2.8Mb..... This all in seconds!!

So what i did, with another computer (my brother) i make a speed test with the same file (Ubuntu), on mine brother PC, the download is stable, like this: 3.4Mb..3.3Mb..3.4Mb..3.4Mb! STABLE! But he is on Windows XP Pro i'm on Windows 7 RC (Build 7100).

Same scenario with mine brother computer (same file, same browser, same network and same location).

I can't figure out what is the problem! Can be Windows 7 RC the problem?

My computer was not runing any P2P program or direct download!

Preferred Solution: Windows 7 Super Unstable Download Speed

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

First RC will start timing out within a month so you are going to have to change anyway.

Second I suspect you are running homegroup. Homegroup should not be used on mixed OS networks. since you have XP ubuntu, and win7 you should be using the workgroup model. asy enough to verify. simply create a new network using workgroup and if it fixes you problem you can disable IPv6 and kill homegroup.

Hello Eight-forums,

Since I installed Windows 8.1, my download speed gets huge drops. My ping and upload speeds are fine, but only my download speed has problems. I am using a wireless network adapter: Asus PCE-N15. Before I installed W8.1, I had no issues at all with it. I already tried installing different drivers and I am now using the latest version from the chipset maker Realtek (RTL8192CE-VA4 version 2007.12.419.2013). I installed it manually through the device manager. I also use the wireless connection 802.11 g, because my router is not compatible with n. I do think it is a software based problem, because the hardware is only 2 months old and worked fine on Windows 8. Other computers in my house don't have any instability problems. I can maybe use a cable for internet, but that would go through my hole house, so that's not a solution.

I added a picture of the ipconfig /all maybe it is useful for your guys:
Here is also a picture of the latest speed-test I did (ping and upload are fine, but download is very bad, it stays 0 at the start for some seconds and then it gets a big peak. This test is one of the worse):

Also here is the graph of the download speed, it is really not stable:
I hope someone finds a solution for me, because I am getting really frustrated after some time. I also don't want to reinstall 8. I also have heard that many other people have different WiFi problems with Windows 8.1.

Edit: I already changed the channel of my router, so it is not int... Read more

I have recently switched to Ethernet connection on my computer so to increase my internet speed. But when i do a speed test on any speed test site, it always repeatadly freezes during the test and the speed goes up and down constantly. I should be getting 30mb internet but due to this strange problem i get an average of 7-11mb.

you can see how unstable the internet is on wired connection.

I have turned my firewall off to try that and it made no difference. But i am think maybe Avast free 7 might be causing some problems.

I have also tried the same cable on a mac and a laptop and another pc and its fine so i am sure something on my PC is the problem :/

Since yesterday, I've been dealing with a suddenly reduced internet download speed, it's extremely frustrating. I have tried changing cables, restarting router by unplugging power and plugging it again after 10 minutes, a soft and a hard reboot directly from my linksys router ( I have tried flushing DNS. It seems to be shifting back and forth. I am running "ping -t www.google.com" in the background and it clearly fluctuates, high ping, low ping.

As for internet speed, on steam it shows it's %20 of what I am supposed to get. Very seldom has it reached what it's supposed to be. This started yesterday when I was downloading a Samsung Software Update and noticing it takes a while to download just 1 MB let alone 1 GB.

Internet has been fine for months, but has slowly deteriorated the past few days. Now it's just not working, or at least the download speed part of it isn't. The ping and upload speed are normal, but the download is very low. I have powered the modem and router on and off a few times, and have reset the router once but nothing seems to work. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Anyone have any clue on this, I cant even imagine where to start looking for the setting or fix. Thanks

1gbps is fantastic. I suspect the Windows problem is a driver problem. Did you check the Windows 10TP. Maybe they fixed it. But then, the really big chunks you can always download with Ubuntu. I envy you, LOL.

Asus G74/Win7 x64, running Norton Security Suite  Purchased Nov 2011.  are some symptoms...hopefully they make sense to someone here!!:
I was getting some random freezes...complete freezes that forced hard shutdowns.  They weren't TOO annoying, but they got a little more frequent over the last week or so.  Malwarybytes showed no problems, neither did any other similar utilities I have.  I didnt' have any malware/virus symptoms, it seems to be 'deeper' than that; somewhere in Windows
2 days ago, out of nowhere...doing no particular task, just surfing, the freeze happened & quickly went BSOD on me.  That didn't last, it went black, and I could NOT re-boot at all, until I ran the startup/boot recover utility that was offered to me (forget the name, there were 2 options; that or System Recover).
That worked, I ran chkdsk (took forever, fixed lots of things) and for 5 minutes, I thought I might be clear.  But I tried to run the Drive Medic utility in my System Mechanic Pro, and that always BSOD'd me.  Again, most times the blue screen flashes, then you get a "select drive you wish to boot to (from?) and push any button, but when you push any button, the prompt just repeats, so you hit the power button once to close & once to restart, and it boots normally.  I tried to run a Seagate backup to my external drive (whole C drive), but that BSOD'd too...but I did manage to backup all my photos/documents/music/vide... A:SUPER Unstable: BSODs/Won't Create Dump Files/F4 Failure..HELP!

Bugcheck F4 is typically caused by a failing hard drive. Systems failure to boot after BSOD and inability to write crash dumps are further indication of a possibly failing HDD. I would first try the below steps.
Remove and reconnect the hard drive. This will solve any potential  contact issues.
Run Seatool For DOS.
Since your hard drive is a Seagate one, download and burn the Seatool for DOS disc image from the below link.
Boot from the CD and run a long test with it.
Report whether it detects any errors during the test.

I'm using windows 7 x64

I made a fresh install couple of days ago, and I'm experiencing this problem ever since.

I noticed the problem while I was playing a LAN game.
The game lagged alot, and was unplayable.
When I played the game offline it worked fine.

I went to Speedtest.net and had a ping of 500+ ms,
and when the download speed was tested it wasn't consistent, the speed changed every second (+-1 MBps every second).

I made another test using my iPhone after connecting to the same network via wi-fi. the ping showed 40ms and the download speed was consistent.

My drivers are up to date,
Maybe I'm missing something, but I couldn't find similar problem on the internet.
Hope to find my help here

Thanks for your time!

p.s I tried connecting via both wi-fi and direct Cable, same results

Hey guys,

recently I've been experiencing some very weird internet connection issues.

my internet connection has become very unstable at times, it can be as slow as in the low 100kbps sometimes, or sometimes it can be as fast as 1mbps.

My internet service provider is Verizon and I have DSL on my computer.

I uses a Westell Modem with a Linksys wireless B Broadband router.

Do anyone know what is causing this problem?

I did notice that my internet connection speed seems to speed up after midnight.

Hey guys!

This issue is most puzzling to me.

Since yesterday the internet began to act unsoundly (through WiFi). As in I never had this problem before. There were periods where it was fast enough to play some online games, watch Youtube no problem, and then it would shut off randomly. So since yesterday I have been restarting the modem with only very short term resolutions to the issue.
I accessed the modem through my web browser and it says the connection is always working fine. Despite that, I called my ISP and they claimed there was an issue, and forwarded it to Deutsche Telekom. Since then I did some experimenting and plugged my computer into the modem with the ethernet cable.

Boom. No problem whatsoever. It's been top speed and reliable.

So I'm assuming this is an issue with Windows 8, hopefully you guys can help me out!

If it helps, I downloaded and installed updates for Windows today. There are 18 optional ones that I did not download yet, but I did download and install the important ones no problem. I checked the network adapters and they all state "The best driver for your software is already installed."

Thanks in advance.

A:Wifi is unstable, yet ethernet cable is top speed?

You may want to go to the website of the laptop's manufacturer and download the latest driver, and install it. Using the OEM driver, sometimes eliminates the problem.

I'm using a belkin modem + wireless router. When the wireless connection speed is 54mbps,i can surf the web.But it often drops to 24mbps and sometimes even 1mbps.When it does this,i cant surf the web.Every time this happens i need to repair my connection. After that I would be able to surf for a few minutes. Then the speed drops again.I'd have to repeat the same thing over and over again. And my pc which is connected via ethernet connection directly to the modem/router works just fine.

When i called belkin's tech support they asked me to change from WPA to WEP.After i did this the problem became worse. My laptop cant even connect to the router.I dont know whether it's the router or the dsl connection.Bcoz i've used linksys and netgear before and the same problem occurred back then but not as frequent as now.

So can anyone help me with this problem??

Hi all,

I wasn't sure whether to put this in this forum or the networking one.

Anyway my problem is with my Windows 7 computer which seems to have some kind of cap on it's download and upload speed. I have a program called Netlimiter installed which I use sometimes to limit my internet connection on my computer and some programs - however none of the limits are 'enabled' so I'm not sure why my download seems to be limited to under 3Mbit/s max.

I have a 'up to 38Mb' connection where I actually get about 25 MB download and 10MB download but I have ran a speed test on my mobile which maxes out my download. I run a VPN when my computer boots into windows to connect to my workplace - however I disconnect from this to run the speed test so I don't think it's anything to do with that.

I have ran the speed test with Firefox and Chromium as well so it's not a browser issue.

I am a bit confused about why my speed is capped on my computer. Maybe somehow the Net-limiter program is running or capping my speed?

All help is much appreciate

A:Windows 7 download speed capped

Hi it could be more to do with where your downloading from it may have a limit on the speed of downloads from their server.

Hi, just upgraded from XP to Windows 7 today and would really like to know what download speed my dial up is running at?? I am new to this board but I am at a loss with my issue. I recently upgraded to Windows 8.1 from Windows 7 and am having problems with downloads. This may or may not be a JDownloader issue but maybe you can help none the less. Ever since the upgrade I have not reached my previous download speeds. I am using JDownloader. I have a 40 mbps fiber internet connection. I am getting 34.8 according to SpeedTest. Before the upgrade I was getting 3-4 mbps download speeds but now I am only getting up to 700 to 800 kbps download speeds. One thing I have noticed is that the more files I am downloading, the faster the speeds. 3 simultaneous downloads reaches up to 800 kbps total but one download will only reach 400 to 500 kbps. I have adjusted the Connections and the Simultaneous downloads to no avail. Whether it may be JDownloader or a Windows issue I would be thankful for any advice pointing me in the right direction! Thanks!

Hey guys,

Before I was running Windows 8 and got a download speed of 20-50MB/s average, yesterday I installed Windows 7 and have since been getting a download speed of 0-6MB/s. This is on the same laptop in the same location.

I tried booting it up into Safe Mode with Networking and tried a speed test there too, there I got a speed of 20-30MB/s. Is there some kind of setting or program that is interfering with this?

Anyone have any solutions for this?

Wifi or wired ?

If WiFi then try a reboot of the router and also try changing the wireless channel on your router. Another possibility is a poor or incorrect WiFi driver for your laptop. Did W7 automatically install one or did you install your own.

I just finished re-installing xp on one of my friends laptops...

It was extremely messed up and had a ton a viruses, malware and disc errors, soo now it's brand spanken new!

Of course he needed some files backed up before the format, so I saved all his music to a USB...

I booted in safe mode (figuring I would avoid extra processes that would slow down the flash drive)

It took 3 HOURS to back up his lousy 12 GIGS OF MUSIC!

Now that im on a fresh version of xp I dragged his music back on the flash (to see how long it would take this time) and it only took 12 minutes?

So what was the HUGE SLOW down? Was it safe mode?

A:Y50-70 Super speed USB3 ?

USB 2.0 "In Theory" can be run at 480 Mbps (or about 60 MB/s). Although because a lot of external factors can decrease this speed down to lower then 5MB/s in real life. Those factors will also affect USB 3.0. I suggest you use google to look for those factors. Also, If you using Windows 8 or newer, there should be no problem in running USB 3.0. But if you're using Windows 7 I think you'll need to install a USB 3.0 driver from Intel (or so I heard, I'm using Windows 10). Also, since USB 3.0 has a lot of PIN to speed up the transfer speed, conventional USB cable may not design for USB 3.0. You should check your USB cable too. Both of the left side usb port in Y50-70 is USB 3.0. You can check if you're really running on USB 3.0 by going to 'Control Panel' (in 'Category' view) -> 'Hardware and Sound' -> 'Devices and Printers'. There you'll see your device and click on it to check if it really connected via USB 3.0 or not.

I have recently conducted an experiment trying to see which of those Windows operating system would download a file faster. I used the website testmy.net and I downloaded a 50mb file. I did that 30 times for each operating system. All of those operating systems were installed on the same type of computer - Dell Optiplex Gx620. Initially I predicted that the file would take about the same time for each operating system, but the results surprised me.

The average time it took to download the 50mb file for:
Windows 2000 - 89.76 seconds
Windows XP - 23.22 seconds
Windows Vista - 19.41 seconds.

I am trying to figure out why it took so long for Windows 2000? Keep in mind that I used the following browsers for each system:
Windows 2000 - IE 5
Windows Xp - IE 6
Windows Vista - IE 7

I wonder if that played a part in determining the download speed? Anyway does anybody else have any other ideas? Thank you for your time.

A:Download speed of Win 2000, Win XP, Windows Vista

Should of used the same browser on each OS also so you then can see is it is the OS or the browser that is faster or slower

Hello all,

I went from browsers not working before resetting my 3 day old gateway, to crazy slow browser and download speed. So at least I'm moving up in life! How can I increase my browser speed and downloads? Am I missing a driver, need to configure/reset IP's or winsock? I'd like to refrain from changing too much I have to reset factory setting again.

A:Windows 7 factory settings and now 5 know/sec download speed

If it's only 3 days old, take it back to where you got it and make them fix it.

You should not have any problems with a new computer.

Alright, I have hi-speed internet and have tried fiddling with the windows firewall and got a download accelerator, nothing works. My downloads used to max at like 75-100 kb/s they then went down to 15 kb/s and now it has hit an all time low of 300-900 BITES/s.

I'm not sure what I should give anyone to take a look at this but here is a hijackthis log thing. Please help!! I can't even download a mod for half life one without waiting 24 hours

Ok, finally put together the new comp!

CPU Bus shows up as 398
Geil Gold Dragon 256 x2 dual channel shows up as 200.

Shows up as 200 at post screen (actually says something like Ram is running at 200 mhz, dual channel) and using the CPU-Z utility.

Is this 200 x 2 speed? Or is it running at 200 instead of 400?

So, I'll boot up my laptop and everything will work fine. My download speeds will be somewhere near 20-25 mb/s and uploads are around 4-5 mb/s. I'll also ping test my computer with no packet loss, a ping around 20 and jitter around 1-3%. It all looks great and dandy (Pics below). Except, after about 15 to 20 minutes, my download speeds will dropoff to about 20-50 kb/s and my ping test goes through the roof to about 70-90 with jitter near 70%... Not good at all.

Now, I have the suspicion this is being caused by my internal wifi adapter (the Realtek), because when I use another external usb adapter (TP Link TL-WN722N) my speeds never fluctuate and I have no problem, ever.

I have this very annoying problem and I'm really out of hopes. I don't know what to do anymore. I'll make a summary of the problem and will be as concise as possible

So I have this Dell Inspiron N5010 laptop with a broadband connection (direct cable, no router) and 3 weeks ago I reinstalled my Windows. Everything went well until 2 weeks ago when the internet speed went down, dial-up like. Pages won't load, and if they do they load just partially. I called my ISP and they said they had no problem. I couldn't find any solution so I thought maybe, some sort of virus or spyware is doing this so I formated the whole hard-disk and did a clean install of Windows.

Unfortunatelly nothing changed, the download speed is the same. Here is a speedtest.net evaluation:

Drivers are up to date, no windows firewall, no antivirus and no windows update. The ISP support guy told me to deactivate IPv4 and IPv6 from Local Area Connection, but nothing changed. I did a TCP/IP reset which raised my down speed to almost 1 Mb, but after a few minutes it went back to "dial-up". With the down speed being the same, Speedtest sometimes shows me upload speed in between 50-70 Mb which is unbelievable (I will make a ss next time I see this).

And the very weird thing is that I have another netbook (pretty weak config, Intel Atom CPU, 2 GB RAM) and with the same cable it has normal speed (the kind of speed I had on this Dell too). An... Read more

Hi guys. I hope you can help on this issue I've been having with my internet connection, I don't know what to do...

I resently formatted my harddrive because my internet all of a sudden started being very slow but after the format it's still the same issue. Now I've tried plugging the connection line into my laptop and there there's no problem.

I am gettin' a slower download than upload...

I have a 10mb download/1 upload speed LAN connection. I ran a speed test on the same connection and on my stationary it shows like 250 kbs download and like 750 kbs upload, while on my laptop it shows like 8 Mbs download and 750 kbs upload... so what's the problem?

So far I've found out that it has nothing to do with the internet connection line or my NIC (I tried a brand new one and it was the same issue), it's not spyware or malware, it's not fragmented and under internet connections it says that I'm connected on a 100 Mb network card and there are no problems with any of the devices?

However I can see that if I open the job list, the download connection is very unstable going from up to 750 kb for a breif moment then falls to a halt at 0 kb... and moreover it says that I'm not using any percent of the network?

I'm on windows 7 and haven't had any problems before this, the rest of the system works just fine, but not the internet. If I try and download something it won't get higher than like 50 kb and then may... Read more

I regularly upload videos online and since the last few days they've been timing out or stalling. Blip.tv is telling me a 65 MB file is going to take 4 hours to upload. Yeah right. Other sites like that are about the same, or just time out and give me errors - such as Youtube. I recently got that "We're Sorry..." page on Google, so I'm thinking something is up and there may be something on my computer sending crap out.

Here's my speedtest.net results:

I've scanned the computer with ad-aware, spybot search and destroy, panda anti-virus, avg, malware bytes, super anti spyware - the works, and I'm not getting anything. Everything says the computer is clean. This just doesn't seem right to me however.

If it's any help - I used a different computer with the same modem and was able to upload fine.

A:Great Download Speed, Horrible Upload Speed

Recently my desktop has experienced very slow download speeds (~0.11 Mbps), however the upload speed appears to be in line (~2.0Mbps). These numbers are taken from Comcast's speed test (my ISP). It is obviously a problem with my PC because everything else on the network (PS3, Laptop) have great signals with no problems. I just recently reverted the Desktop back to its factory state, and everything was working fine for a couple of months.

The desktop in question uses Vista 32-bit and the Belkin Basic USB Wireless Adapter.

Set the MTU in the router itself to 1492

Analyzer is saying that my MTU is 1460, but in my router and in my NIC it is 1500Click to expand...

the normal value for DSL is 1492, and 1460 is INVALID = = must be a multiple of 8.

Manually set {1472 or 1464} in the router.

The article cited has good info but I would opt for all the defaults.

Hi, welcome to this forum!

Please visit this site to measure the real speed of the connection. When done please post the results here.
Internet providers (who gives you the internet) usually make an offer of x speed internet but they only guarantee you to get much less. So the speed might change up and down sometimes. If the internet is still very slow please read the details of your agreement with the internet provider. But first give us the speed results from that site
