Wired keyboard not working after Dell update

Q: Wired keyboard not working after Dell update

I have a new Dell Inspiron desktop running Windows 7 Pro with a wired keyboard that is now not working after Dell's update. Mouse is fine. I have an account password log-in and can't access anything because I can't type anything. Booting in safe mode does not work. Booting in the BIOS-- the keyboard is responsive. Not sure what to change or adjust to get the keyboard working.

Preferred Solution: Wired keyboard not working after Dell update

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

cannot enter characters to the login password.  The system boots but does not give an error message indicating the keyboard is not working.  The only light illuminated on the keyboard is a numeral 1 on the upper right edge of the keyboard. Is this an indication that the keyboard needs to be replaced or is it possible to have a bug?

I have a Dell 7737 laptop and from time to time it develops a firmware glitch where random keys stop working for both BIOS Setup and Operating Systems. After such thing happens neither shutdown (Full shutdown / Fast Boot disabled) nor restart get the keyboard back to a normal state. At this point the only workarround is to disconnect the AC power cord and then either drain the battery or physically remove it.
This laptop's battery cover is not designed for daily removal and it is starting to get loose because of this BIOS bug.
I am running BIOS version A14 but this bug was present since I purchased the laptop with BIOS version A07. Sometimes I cannot even type my password because the random keys that stop working match those it uses.
Please Dell could you provide a BIOS hotfix for this annoying issue?

A:Dell XPS 13 keyboard nor working

Hi NGVAN2510,
What is the exact system model?
Does the system overheat? Is there any damage / liquid spillage on the system?
Does an external keyboard work fine?
Disconnect the adapter and battery and press and hold the power button for 30 seconds to release any static power. Then test the system with the adapter only / battery only.
Press and hold the fn key + power button to turn on the system and it should initiate the diagnostics - check for any possible beep codes.
Update the BIOS - enter the service tag and download the BIOS, update and restart the machine and check.
If the issue is not resolved, then download the service manual from the above link and open the chassis and reseat the keyboard cables and check.
If the issue persists, replace the keyboard. If a replacement keyboard does not resolve the issue, then the keyboard controller might have failed and the motherboard needs to be replaced.
Also, please click my DELL-username and write me a private message with the service tag and your Name for case records.
Let us know if you have any other queries.

It's against the rules for us to help you out that way as far as I know it's supposed to be on here--I'm already on probation so I'm not going to mess with them lol.

Anyway, google "dell [model number here] drivers" should come up with something. Other than that I have nothing. Sorry.

I have a new Dell XPS 13 Linux edition (this one) and immediately installed Linux Mint 18 on it, wiping the Ubuntu 14.04 which was shipped with the it.
I am really confident with it, only the backlight for the keyboard is not working. I have a keyboard light symbol on my F10 key but when I press it, nothing happens. All other features and all other media controls/media keys/screen brightness keys work. When clicking the battery icon in the Linux Mint taskbar, I see 2 controls, one for the keyboard lights brightness and one for the screen brightness. When I drag those bars, only the screen brightness is working again.
I also see the settings in /sys/class/leds/dell\:\:kbd_backlight/ (I think that's the config folder for it). The brightness file in this directory contains "1", so as I understand this correctly, this should theoretically work.
As I noted before I immediately installed Linux Mint on it, so I can't say whether it worked before. And this is really the only thing which is not working on the laptop.
I have obviously checked that my ultrabook has backlights with the product number on its back.
Do you have some tips so I can get this to work? Thanks in advance!

My Dell 9550 XPS has developed an annoying fault. Every time the laptop wakes from sleep, the keyboard no longer works and needs a Restart for it to start working again. (The on-screen keywboard works, and also if I plug in an external USB keywboard, that works too)
I *think* it developed this problem after installing the Windows Creator update but not 100% sure.
Does anyone have any suggestions?

My new XPS27 all-in-one has been excellent once a few kinks were worked out.  It comes with a Dell branded Logitech keyboard/mouse combination - model KM714.  There are multi-media keys accessed through the Fn button; things like play, pause, up volume, down volume, mute.  The Fn button also allows common Win 8 functions like search, charms bar, etc.
The Win 8 functions are fine, but the multi-media keys are not.  They are not operational.  Dell support had me update firmware, but still no luck.  They then sent me a new keyboard, same model.  Still no luck.
I'm wondering if anyone else with a XPS 2720 has a KM714 that works?  On Dell website, http://accessories.us.dell.com/sna/productdetail.aspx?c=us&l=en&s=dhs&cs=19&sku=332-1396 it actually doesn't list the 2720 as compatible.  Out of date information on a website would be nothing new; and seem peculiar that Dell would bundle an incompatible keyboard with a high end machine.
Anyone out there with a KM714 with similar problems?
Thanks all.

A:Dell/Logitech KM714 Keyboard Working with XPS 27 AiO?

So eventually, after just continuing to reinstall drivers, keyboard is finally controlling the media settings.  Went to a Microsoft store where they had XPS 27 on display and they suggested to just try all drivers until it worked.  I didn't approach it very scientifically unfortunately as did this a few times, but this last time, I reinstalled about 5 varying from chipset to video card and shazam.
Oh Dell, you backlog your orders, then seemingly rush out your builds with ancient drivers on board.  I had keyboard not work; I had touch screen fail; I loaded drivers that we 6 months newer than the ones installed at the factory...
What has happened to you Dell?  Anyway, my problem is over.

I have a Dell Inspiron 1525. Yes, I know it is a very old model but it has served me just fine over the last few years until very recently when some of the keys are failing. There was a loud, almost constant buzzing sound in my laptop every time I worked on it so I took it to the repair shop where the engineer told me it is a problem with the fan. So he removed the keyboard to open and check the make of the fan and said a replacement fan will need to be ordered. While I am waiting for that to be done, he put the keyboard back in its place but some keys on it are not working. I came across the following posted here more than 3 years ago by the user HYLBJTO. I am reproducing it below because the problem I am facing with the keyboard is exactly the same as described by this user and the suggestion given to him by someone to fix the problem did not work from what I understand.

A:Keyboard stopped working on DELL laptop

Hi, I think the onboard keypad can be disabled> if you use the Dell support online, that might tell you...to sogn in, you have to make an account if you do not have one, .you type in the Service Tag ID (it is usually underneath the laptop, or on a sticker somewhere) and it will tell you basic info about the system. What you want to read tho....is in the user guide, for anything about the keypad/keyboard....there is usually a way to disable this to use a separate, full sized regular keyboard. The setting would probably be in the BIOS....check to make sure exactly what to look for and how to reenable your laptop keyboard.

I have a Dell E5500 running Windows 7 and the keyboard and mouse stopped working.  For the keyboard I get  "Windows cannot start this hardware device because its configuration information (in the registry) is incomplete or damaged. (Code 19)".  For the mouse I get  "This device cannot start. (Code 10)".
I have tried deleting/re-installing devices and drivers, ran AVG & Malwarebytes programs, disk check, verified and updated bios, deleted all windows updates since problem, verified all programs are enabled in MSCONFIG.
I do have this machine running both Windows XP and 7 as a dual boot.  WIndows XP works just fine.  I cannot get the devices to work in safe mode.  I believe that there is a registry issue but of coarse I have no backup.

One key of the keyboard of my laptop wasn't working,. I verified it was a problem on the keyboard itself, so I bought a new one. I have removed my keyboard before, so I figured it wasn't an issue. So I installed the new one, everything ok. Then I turned my laptop off and I saw the keyboard was unaligned, so i moved it a little bit. Now both old keyboard and new don't work. I have a Dell Inspiron 1545 with Windows 7 and a majority of the top keys on the keyboard aren't working; more specifically the Q-R, and the U-P keys. I've had the computer for about 2 years now. I've had a previous keyboard issue in the past where I would type a the "I" key and it would type both the "I" and "O," but this was usually fixed by just restarting my computer.
I've tried the keyboard troubleshooting procedure, but that didn't solve anything. I'm considering buying a new keyboard for my laptop but I don't want to waste the money if it is an issue with wiring and not the keyboard itself. Does anybody have any clue on how to fix or test my issue?

I bought a computer from the Dell Outlet that was dead on arrival. A:Backlit Keyboard Stopped working in my Dell XPS 13 Ultra

When you start the notebook and before Windows loads does the keyboard light up?  You can also check in safemode, start the system while tapping F8 and choose safemode.  Log on to Windows, at any time in this process is the backlit on?  If not then there is likely a problem.
If you aren't able to get the backlit on anymore no matter what you try please shoot me a private message.  On the Private message please include your name, address, phone number and the service tag of the notebook.  I will be happy to research possible service options.  If I can't help personally, I can certainly get you in contact with someone that can.

Welcome to Techspot.
The multimedia keys require special drivers for them to function.
You haven't stated that you installed them.
If you post all your keyboard specs (normally found on a sticker on the bottom), I'll try to help you find the appropriate drivers. If you post the computer specs (operating system, etc.), it would help also since drivers vary between operating systems.

I was reading an expired thread about issues with certain keys not working on a Dell Inspiron 1525.

I have experienced what seems like the same problem: Certain keys do not work - but not the same ones as those in the older thread (w,d,etc for me). I replaced the keyboard with another working keyboard ( I have two Dell 1525's). The same keys do not work - with either keyboard attached. But here's the strange part: If I do not screw down the keyboard and hold it up slightly, the problem disappears. I thought it might have something to do with pressure on the keyboard, but I could not duplicate the problem by applying pressure to the back of the keyboard. However, if it is screwed down tight to the plate it sits on, those same keys do not work. I tried putting pieces of paper between the keyboard and the plate it sits on, and got mixed results. SO, I'm thinking this could be some kind of electromagnetic interference???? Anyone have any thoughts here? The problem absolutely goes away if I hold the keyboard even 1/4th of an inch above the plate it sits on.

About 4 days ago, my laptop keyboard randomly stopped working. I have never had issues with it in all 4ish years of owning this laptop, I did not drop it recently, spill a drink on it, etc. I was able to log into my computer perfectly fine but then after that it just completely stopped working. I was able to pull up the touch keyboard and I noticed that every time I'd turn caps lock on on the touch keyboard the light would light up on my actual laptop keyboard. That was the only sign of life coming from the keyboard and even that I could only control from the touchscreen keyboard. After that I searched around on the internet for a bit and tried these things:1) made sure I had the latest BIOS update (went through dell and downloaded the most recent driver for it)2) I tried cleaning the keyboard and removing/reconnecting it to the laptop. 3) I tried restoring my laptop to a previous version from about a week ago, before the most recent update since this problem started happening.4) I messed around with the sticky keys, languages settings, etc. None of it worked5) I uninstalled the keyboard drivers, turned off my laptop, and let windows reinstall it. Something I saw as a common fix online 6) I went through the dell online support program they have. I ran a couple tests for the whole computer and the only one that came out as not being fine was the keyboard one. Hi everyone,

I recently installed Windows 7 in a partition of my hard drive along with XP. No problems at all with that but...

I recently purchased a DVB USB Dual Tuner Stick to work with Windows Media Centre. Been having problems with it from the dot but I think that is mainly down to the signal from the aerial.

What's happened though is I left it plugged in when I restarted my PC and now the BIOS takes for ever to get to the Windows loading screen and I can't even get into the BIOS for the reasons explained below.

I have a Dell Dimension E521 which has no PS2 port, yes no PS2 port! So I can't plug one of them in. So at the initial screen I can't press F2 to enter system setup to make sure 'Enable USB Legacy Devices' is checked. I've downloaded the latest BOIS flash form the Dell website which is the same version as the current one and applied that. When I switch on the PC my KB's lights doesn't come on straight away either like there is no power going to them. Also when Windows 7 is inactive for a while is goes into the locked mode and the KB and mouse won't work then. It's obviously a USB failure/problem?

I've seen people talking about taking the battery out of the Motherboard and clearing the CMOS, is that not risky and I could lose all my information or end up having a defunct Motherboard? How do I do that?

Any help will be greatly appreciated, I'm so annoyed!

A:USB Keyboard not working during boot - Dell Dimension E521

I was looking at a friends Dell Dimension e521 yesterday and it's associated problems.

Virii infections/spyware bad javascripts etc.

After a few attempts to run spyware and AV proggies, and have them halt with bogus errors, I decided to boot into safe mode.

OK rebooted pressed F8 and when the safe mode choices appeared the Ketboard and mouse were NFG in selecting any of the choices.

The only option was to wait for the timer to count down and "Start windows normally"!

Just what is it that freezes the keyboard till the LOGON screen?

Oh and there's no F2 or F12 execution at post to get into cmos/bios setup either. (KB is frozen here too).

There are no ps2 KB/Mouse ports on this machine only the USB port where the combo KB~Mouse single usb plug is inserted!

I did eventually get other, AV and Spyware proggie's on to the machine (Eset and Malwarebytes to replace McAffee) and they did find 3 virii and 46 pieces of spyware, one of which was the AV2009 crap, Which slipped right by McAffee!

Even after removing the above, the KB/Mouse stays frozen till "Logon"!

I thought possibly the virii and/or spyware had somehow been the culprit!

Just what is it that is disabling the KB/Mouse until "Logon"? Has anyone else had this problem with the e521?

Hi all,
I have a dell XPS2720 and so here is what happened.
I installed PS Now app in my PC and i wanted to get my wireless controller to work so I downloaded and installed SCP driver installer. I ran it but then the computer stopped responding so I decided to do a hard reset.  I held the power button to restart then once the computer and windows started, i am unable to do anything anymore since I am stuck in the home screen.  This is the screen wherein when you press any key or click the mouse, the system prompts you to log in your password to unlock the screen.
My mouse, keyboard and touchscreen are all not responsive.  To isolate the issue, i tried my unifying receiver on another PC and it is working.  I am thinking my drivers perhaps got messed up.
Can you help me?  What can i do given that i can't even log back in to the system.

So what's happening is occasionally, while I'm typing, it repeats letters, as if the keyboard temporarily locks up. (Sometimes, but it's rare because I usually type continuously, it just stops me from pressing keys for a bit.) It's like "Hello my naaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa..."
And what's weird is it only happens after I pressed any of the lock keys before (disabling doesn't fix it.)
I'm using a keyboard connected directly to my PC, with up to date drivers.

Does the keyboard backlight come on when the system is powered up?  If it does, you may have a software issue.
If it does not, you have a hardware problem.
First thing to check is that the backlight cable is firmly connected to the system board (this will require removing the keyboard to check).

Check your BIOS settings to see if you can configure backlight illumination there.  And if you haven't already, try Fn+F10 rather than just F10 in case you changed your Function lock so that the F keys act as F keys by default rather than performing the function shown on their icons.

Twice my Dell Inspiron 15 5000 keyboard stopped working for no reason. To fix it, I had to
1) shut down the laptop
2) remove the battery and power source
3) hold start button down 10 sec to drain completely
4) restart
I've restarted both times using adapter without battery in which necessitated shutting down, removing power adapter and putting battery back in and restarting. If this happens again, I'll try restarting with battery in and see if it works. Simply restarting does not fix problem
My question is this: Dell has sent me replacement keyboard which they said is refurbished. Is it worth my time changing my keyboard to fix this problem? Is it  a keyboard problem or a software problem? I'm on Windows 8 and my laptop is less than 1 month old. I'm not keen on changing keyboard if it will not solve problem but I have only a few days left before I have to send a keyboard back to Dell. Also, will Dell let me try a couple of weeks with old keyboard to see if this problem escalates? It's 2X in a brand new laptop!!!

A:Dell Inspiron 15 5000 keyboard stops working for no reason.

My laptop (Inspiron 15 5000 Series 6GB RAM, 1TB, AMD A8) is only 1 week old but the space button started to messy a couple of days ago. Sometimes I could hit a space, sometimes the words simply flow together. Today (exactly 1 week old machine...) part of the keyboard went wrong. There was no logic in it: the complete left column did not work: `~ TAB Caps Lock Shift and Ctrl and Fn. The next  2 columns worked, then 3#EDC did not, then the next worked etc. What???
Restart did not work. Then I've found this idea to take out the battery. Now everything is fine. But how can such problem occur with a brand new laptop??? Especially with a DELL...I am pretty disappointed and annoyed.

I got this new Dell Inspiron 7568 about a week ago. Since I got it the up and left keys have not worked together. They work individually but not together. This does is not isolated to my computer, the display computer at Best Buy also had this issue. This is a big problem because I need those keys in order to test my programs. I have looked in many places some say it is a problem with the bios other say with the drives and others say with the hardware.
I have already tried calling technical support and they could not do anything about it. This is not the first post regarding this problem: http://en.community.dell.com/support-forums/laptop/f/3518/t/19679981 (slightly different model). My last computer was also a Dell Inspiron but an older model and it did not have this problem.
I have been I loyal Dell costumer for a long time please help.

Hello I did a fresh install of windows 7 and I downloaded all the drivers but the eject button on the keyboard is not working does any body know what could be the issue?

A:Dell Inspiron 1440 eject button on the keyboard is not working?

Maybe not all the Dell applications were installed.

On a Dell, the correct and required install is (1) install Windows (2) Install Dell Laptop System Software (3) Install Motherboard chipset drivers (4) install device drivers including Video, DELL SOUND DRIVERS, Ethernet, touch pad, etc.

Windows 7 will install some drivers, but the Dell supplied, in most cases, is preferred and customized for the Dell hardware. The Dell sound driver is one example.

The Dell downloads, using your service tag number is the best option. You can also access "My Dell Downloads" which includes added software. www.support.dell.com
