Q: Please Help...Low Virtual Memory...XP Crash!

Hi there,

I really hope that somebody can help.

For the past few months my PC has been running very slow and this is especially noticeable on startup! Music quite often will distort/computer will slow right down to the point where it crashes and reboots itself!! I will quite often receive a warning balloon in the bottom-right hand corner of the desktop saying 'virtual memory low'.

Please could somebody provide some assistance...it would be greatly appreciated.

Preferred Solution: Please Help...Low Virtual Memory...XP Crash!

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

Hi, welcome to TSF

See here for details on posting your full system specs.

To increase your virtual memory, right-click My Computer, select Properties, click the Advanced tab and then Settings in the Performance section. Click the Advanced tab and then Change under the Virtual Memory section. What are the initial and maximum settings?

Also, right-click the C: drive in Windows Explorer and select Properties to see how much free space is left on the drive.

Have you defragged the drive lately?

I have changed the settings on my virtual memory to 3500 and also upgraded to 2G of RAM. Yet I am still getting the warning that I am low on virtual memory.

The bigger issue is that programs randomly crash every few hours. Restarting the computer resolves the issue but only temporarily.

The programs that I run daily are basic, Firefox, Outlook and sometimes QuickBooks. The crash happens regardless of what I have open.

Any suggestions?

Thanks!

A:Random Crash / Low Virtual Memory

As long as you have 2gb of RAM, you can disable the Virtual Ram.

Go to Control panel > System > Advanced tab > under Performance click on Settings > Advanced tab > under Virtual Ram click on Change > first, click on Custom Settings and set them both to Zero > Set > then click on No Paging File > Set

Hello,

I've been experiencing sluggish performance, browsers were laggy and non responsive after having many tabs.

I found that the solution to improve performance was to change Virtual Memory values and disable "paging file size" for all drives.

Now the computer performance is amazing, everything responds properly but now I'm getting error messages of low memory and getting crashes. A few minutes ago the computer crashed to a black screeen.

Here are the values I have right now in Virtual Memory, what else should I do to stop these crashes? I already tried a few different values but the problem still persists.

Any suggestions?

6 months ago,i upgraded memory from the factory installed 64 to 256. It works, etc.

Is there any additional tweaking/ajustments i can do? i read something with virtual memory setting could be done for one thing.

A:After upgrading memory,its works,Virtual memory Tweaking Now?

Unless you have Win95 you likely donít want to go messing with your virtual memory. And even in that case it is the vcache you would be more interested in tweaking. Win98 and higher handles memory well.

If you watch your system monitor and are sure you arenít using your virtual memory you might do the ConservativeSwapfileUsage=1 INI tweak. Unless you are doing graphics, video editing or something RAM intensive you likely arenít using the virtual memory and the tweak wonít slow your computer. It doesnít speed it up, it just stops needless writes to the hard drive during idle time. Information if you want to do that: http://www.aumha.org/a/memmgmt.htm

Donít let anyone talk you into Cacheman or any of those Mem/RAM/Turbo/Boost type programs. They were written for Win95 and counterproductive in anything since.

A device manager wasn't mentioned from the manufacturer. The manufacturer is PNY. Anyone know why it might cause the computer to run on virtual memory? There is a warning box that pulls up reading "out of memory at line:1521". I don't know what I need to do.

My boy's desktop has a low memory warning problem that is a little different than some of the other threads I've read here.  He gets the warning when he plays SWTOR.  Task manager shows about 290 MB of memory in use during play with no leaking.  He has an SSD as the system drive with 140 GB free out of about 240 GB.  After going on the Microsoft boards, I tried to fix the problem by resetting the virtual memory settings to "automatically size paging file" and even a custom setting but the settings won't save following a restart and it always comes back saying that no virtual memory has been allocated.  The PC runs Win8 32 bit with a Core DUO E8400 and 4GB of RAM on the MB.  I'd be grateful for any suggestions/help.

Hello,
A while back I had posted my log and my problem was resolved but I have recently come across another problem. My computer's performance has slowly been slowing and now I have had enough. I can see the problems when I open task manager and look at the applications. Other than the main programs I may be running that I know use a good amount of memory there will be a couple names I am not familiar with like svchost.exe and msmgs.exe that will be up there in the 10,000 k region. " XP REQUIRES "backing storage" for EVERYTHING it keeps in RAM.
Virtual Memory is always in use.All processess gets virtual memory addresses
(a Virtual Address Space) no matter how much RAM is actually installed on the computer."

"Memory allocation in is a two-step process--virtual memory addresses are reserved first, and committed second...The reservation process is simply a way NT tells the Memory Manager to reserve a block of virtual memory pages to satisfy other memory requests by the process...There are many cases in which an application will want to reserve a large block of its address space for a particular purpose (keeping data in a contiguous block makes the data easy to manage) but might not want to use all of the space."

In other words, that virtual memory to which you refer,is only allocated memory, not necessarily
paged memory.

The thing you really want to know,is the actual pagefile usage.Use this programHERE

My laptop, Packard Bell Easynote TM81, has been crashing and restarting by itself, and when it does, the ENTIRE system will not respond. So I try to format the entire thing, and after a few days, when I have gotten used to it, it comes up with a screen for 1 second, and all I could read was "system memory dump" and "CPU memory dump". So during this month, I have had to format the entire thing OVER AND OVER. I can't reinstall the system, because I am using a laptop, which comes with no Windows 7 CD. Please help!

Why i don't have C:\pagefile.sys on my computer since when formated? If i change Virtual memory paging file size to minimum size of 4096mb and maximum size of 4096, my physical ram is only 512mb ddr2 400hz. Is it ok or not?

A:query about memory or virtual memory

<<Why i don't have C:\pagefile.sys on my computer since when formated?>>

Is it on a different partition?

<<If i change Virtual memory paging file size to minimum size of 4096mb and maximum size of 4096, my physical ram is only 512mb ddr2 400hz. Is it ok or not?>>

Not sure what "it" refers to.

IMO...users should just let XP manage the pagefile size...I have found no advantage from any other arrangement (and I've tried several).

How much RAM is physically installed in this system?

A:virtual memory and memory usage i need to know

virtual memory is hard drive space allocated by your computer for ram that is unavailable or for page swapping. Generally you do not worry about virtual memory. It is a system function. Generally it is set to automatic from windows. With windows XP, 512MB is the minimum to run an acceptably performing computer. 1gb is highly recommended. With Vista 1gb is the minimum, 2gb is recommended.

I was running Outlook, AIM, and IE at the same. After a few moment, I'd get this following message:

Your system is low on virtual memory. Windows is increasing the size of your Virtual Memory Paging file. During this process, memory requests for some applications may be denied.

When I hit OK, all my applications would close, except my Outlook. I'm running Win2K with 512 memory. My computer is only 1.5 years old. I didn't play any games or download anything so it's not heavily used. But why the message then?

I ran Spybot, AdAware, and VirusScan just to see if I had any spyware or virus on my computer. None. I also checked the Processes in Task Manager and I didn't see any suspicious applications running. But I noticed that when I ran IE, the memory usage in Task Manager would keep going up (significantly) eventhough I didn't do anything in Explorer.

Can somebody tell me what the problem here? And perhaps a solution for it.
Thank you very much.

I am wondering what my computer should be set at for it's best performance as far as memory usage etc.? Do I set it so the system takes care of it or put in my own amounts? Thanks for your help and sorry if this is not in the proper forum!!
DLBerry

A:Memory Usage/Virtual Memory

Just let the system takes care of it. If you have enough physical memory, you really shouldn't need to worry about it. Virtual memory or Page file, is memory that uses your hard drive. When you have a app or apps that uses more memory than you physical have, the system will alocate space on the hard drive for "virtual memory" or Page File. This is when you notice performance lag on your computer, because the hard drive transfers data at a much slower rate than your memory.

Sir
I do have a question?

We have a space in harddisk ,called virtual memory.  In addition to DRAM ,Operating System  uses this  virtual memory to store and run applications. Virtual memory makes up for the need of space required.

I think that the physical memory DRAM is not needed. Virtual memory inside the hard disk is  sufficient.

By avoiding DRAM we  can save the cost of  physical DRAM. We can also save lot of time that is involved in associating the pages between DRAM and Virtual memory.

Of course , virtual memory provided by the hard disk is slow. But  in current trends we can research , to increase the speed of magnetic drums being used by the harddisk to store data.

Thanks ,
Ramkumar.

If I choose to rais the amount of virtual memory the system uses does this meen that the computer will not show as much Physical Memory or not be able to utalize it?

A:Virtual Memory And Physical Memory

Virtual memory is actually not memory. It is simulated memory area on the HDD. When you are using a lot of virtual memory, your system will actually run slower. HDD access is considerably slower than RAM access. The OS will page memory out to the HDD to make more physical memory available to itself or applications, as needed.

OneOldMan:

Your computer needs a heck of a lot more than 64 MB of RAM for it to run properly with Windows XP installed. The minimum amount that it should have is 256 MB, but 512 MB is preferable.

When your computer no longer has any physical RAM to access, it looks for additional memory on the hard drive, which is known as virtual memory. This action is much slower than accessing physical RAM and will slow things down.

Physical RAM are the modules that are plugged into the motherboard.

Virtual memory is additional memory that is obtained from accessing the hard drive.

What brand name, model name, and model number is your computer? Go to http://www.crucial.com and enter that information and you will be able to find out how much RAM your computer supports and what type it needs.

Virtual memory is storage space on your hard drive for programs that need more memory than is available from the amount of Ram you have installed on your computer.

From Windows help:

Windows 2000 allocates resources according to its settings and manages devices according to what your system needs. However, you can adjust Windows 2000 to improve its performance, particularly by changing the way Windows 2000 uses processor time and memory.

Managing processor time
System processing is managed directly by Windows 2000, which can allocate tasks between processors while also managing multiple processes on a single processor. However, you can set Windows 2000 to give a greater proportion of processor time to the application in which you are currently working. This can result in faster response time from the programs and applications you use while you work. Or, if you have background processes such as printing or disk backup that you want to run while you work, you may prefer to have Windows 2000 share processor resources equally between background and foreground programs.

Managing Computer Memory
When your computer is running low on RAM and more is needed immediately to complete your current task, Windows 2000 uses hard drive space to simulate system RAM. In Windows 2000, this is known as Virtual Memory, and often called the pagefile. This is similar to the UNIX swapfile. The default size of the virtual memory pagefile (appropriately named pagefile.sys) created during installati... Read more

Virtual memory is system memory that is simulated by the hard drive. When all the RAM is being used (for example if there are many programs open at the same time) the computer will swap data to the hard drive and back to give the impression that there is slightly more memory. To increase the Virtual Memory do the following:Right click My computerClick PropertiesClick the advanced tabClick Settings under performanceClick the advanced tab.Enter your intial size (which should be 150% of the actual physical RAM you got)Enter your Maximum size (which should be 3 times as big as your actualy physical RAM you got)Click setClick Ok. On each window. You may have to restart your computer

My computer regularly tells me that I have low virtual memory. I am nervous about deleting things on my computer, but I know there are programs that I don't need or use. I have a 7 or 8 year old Dell, and am considering buying a new computer, perhaps a laptop, but I want to get the most out of my desktop while I have it. How do I know what to delete and how to delete these items? Thanks.

A:low virtual memory

Virtual memory has nothing to do with deleting things on your computer. Virtual memory refers to a section of your HD where Windows stores information that would normally go into dynamic RAM (the memory DIMMs on your motherboard) if you had more memory AND Windows had the ability to address all that memory (I have yes to see a computer that has enough memory to avoid having to use virtual memory). If you're getting a "low virtual memory" message, it probably means your virtual memory setting is Custom, meaning Windows is not allowed to increase or decrease it. Try changing it to "System managed size", as follows:

* Click Start, Control Panel, and double-click System
* Click the Advance tab
* In the Performance Options, click the Settings button
* Click the Advanced tab, and in the Virtual Memory section (last one on the page), click the Change button.
* Click the radio button next to "System managed size", then click the Set button and click OK.

You will be asked to reboot to put the setting into effect.

This will allow Windows, not your hardware, to decide how much virtual memory it needs and adjust it accordingly. Hope this solves the problem.

I'm hoping that someone here will be able to help me figure out what's going on with my computer lately....

Twice in the past two days, I've gotten a balloon warning in my status bar saying "Your system is low on virtual memory. Windows is increasing the size of your paging file." And then it says something about refusing access to programs or something like that.

But the point is, I have no idea what virtual memory is, or why it's acting up all of a sudden. I've had this computer for almost three years and this is the very first time I've ever gotten an error message like this. And it's not like I'm running any programs that I haven't run before....so I can't figure this out at all.

Anyway. I'd appreciate any advice you could provide.

A:Virtual Memory

Virtual memory is created using a special file called a swapfile or paging file.

Whenever the operating system has enough memory, it doesn't usually use virtual memory. But if it runs out of memory, the operating system will page out the least recently used data in the memory to the swapfile in the hard disk. This frees up some memory for your applications. The operating system will continuously do this as more and more data is loaded into the RAM.

However, when any data stored in the swapfile is needed, it is swapped with the least recently used data in the memory. This allows the swapfile to behave like RAM although programs cannot run directly off it. You will also note that because the operating system cannot directly run programs off the swapfile, some programs may not run even with a large swapfile if you have too little RAM.

Uh-oh. Let the games begin. Put on your sheepskin chaps and take a deep seat.

You may as well have asked about Intel/AMD, Apple/Microsoft, single or multiple partitions, or infidel/believer.

I have seen threads on this run to hundreds of posts, without a single mind being changed.

Do what you want, but don't explain it publicly--you'd only be begging for it.

Virtual memory is hard disk space used in lieu of real memory. It is MUCH, Much slower and used only when a system runs out of the faster real RAM.

The absolute size doesnt matter as it is all slower, but if you want a guide somewhere around 1.5 times your RAM.

Virtual Memory is essentially an amount of space on your hard drive that windows uses as if it were RAM. It's completely separate from the RAM that is physically installed into your motherboard.

If you're running Windows XP, you should have 1gb of RAM installed for optimum performance. 512mb is the absolute minimum to operate with any kind of stability, and 2gb is recommended for gaming.
