I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I recently changed my BIOS password (aka supervisor password) on my ThinkPad T400 and I did not write it down. I do remember that the character limit for this password was short (maybe 6,7,or 8 characters long). If I knew the (default?) character limit or length I could rule out dozens of other passwords in my memory and gain access to my computer that much sooner. Ive read every manual and users guide for my laptop and there is no other method readily available, no bypass solution so it is imperative that I remember what I set.. Thanks for your time.

Indeed it is. That's the only solution so there's nothing that we can do as we don't assist with password issues as per the site rules.

As a result I'm closing this thread.

Hi,

yesterday i set the bios/supervisor password.

When i now turn on the notebook, i can see the Toshiba - Leading innovations screen and then it goes dark and won't boot any further.

The harddisk / fan / graphics card etc is working - but i don't see anything nor do i get some kind of prompt or shell or whatsoever.

I tried all those "Press, ESC, Press F2, Press F1, Press INS" stuff, nothing worked out.
I removed the battery for several mins while pressing the power button, nothing.

Maybe somebody has some kind of clue whats wrong with this maschine....

A:Portege R830-1EE: Supervisor / Bios password - No Boot or login prompt

Hi

Did you use some high ASCII character like ?, ?, ?, ?, ?, ?, ?, ?, ?, ?, ?, ? etc in your BIOS / Supervisor password?

In the past the usage of such characters prevented the notebook from booting up.
In such case you had to contact the service partner in order to solve this problem.

Hi before describing the problem I will give some details about the Laptop and the OS used. -Ideapad 710s bought in August 2016 -Windows 10 Home China preinstalled-Clean Install of Windows 10 Home Multilanguage about 2 months ago(UEFI install with 3 partitions, C, EFI partition, Recovery partition) [So this laptop is used by a friend of mine who I helped reinstalling the OS to get rid of malware. When reinstalling I faced the usual issue of a not detected HDD due to lack of drivers, which I had to download to a USB stick and had to load during installation.] About a month ago my friend started the laptop and got stuck in this screen: Upon pressing Enter the same screen will come back up afer a short black screen. I entered the BIOS menu (or whatever you call it) and found that there is no HDD listed in the boot options:  I changed all possible settings in that menu but nothing helped to normally boot again. I created an Ubuntu Live USB stick plugged it in, restarted and...the laptop booted normally to Windows like nothing had happened. I checked the boot menu again and the inbuilt HDD was listed in the boot options. My only guess some time later was that it must be a hardware problem since it appeared so randomly, and having a USB stick plugged lead to the HDD being recognised again (so is my assumption). Now, the same screen appeared again some time later and after waiting for a while my friend was able to reboot the lapto... Hey guys, I have a Lenovo Y480 whose HDD is in the process of failing.  I just got a Samsung SDD, and put a bootable copy of Win10 onto a USB stick.  Problem now is that I can't figure out how to get the computer to boot from the USB stick.  I'm in the BIOS Setup right now, and I've been through the topics both on the Lenovo website, and through a couple of different links from Google.  I just can't find the options mentioned in either of those websites. I'm not sure where to go from here.  Anybody run into a similar problem?  Any ideas on how to get this computer to boot from the USB stick so that I can install a fresh Win10 onto the machine? Thanks for the help!

A:Lenovo Y480 USB Boot Menu Options

nvm, I just got it working. I had to disable UEFI in order to do it from the "Boot" menu in Setup. I'll re-enable it later to make sure I don't accidentally boot from a different USB stick later.

Hello everyone! I ama new user and i am coming up with this post as I couldn`t find any kind of solution for my problem.Recently I decided to do a reinstallation of my operating system, which also previously was Windows 7 Ultimate (x64). The installation went as usual, and after finishing it I went on to install all the latest drivers from the Lenovo site, for my product. When getting close to installing almost all the drivers i`ve needed, i stumbled upon a new version of the BIOS amnd the drivers and sfotware recommended for my laptop, by the producer. So i proceeded to install the upgrade, restarted the computer when it prompted me to do so, but after the so-called restart the laptop did not boot up as usual. At first it was telling me to not do anything as the BIOS is being flashed and then it was telling me something about some sort of image processing, things that i did not understand at the time (i have never encountered anything like that). After that my screen turned black. I have not done anything for a few couple of minutes as i thought it was supposed to be like that, but then i just force shut it down and unplugged the AC adapter. When trying to boot it all up again, the only thing i got was a black screen and nothing else. After doing a little bit of research it appears that, somehowm i`ve managed to corrupt the bios on my laptop or something, and nothing else would work at this point. I tried to remove the BIOS battery and the ram and then put them all back, trye... Read more

Hello, Problem 1:I've set the supervisor password some time ago on my T450s. I think I used the special character "!" which was accepted at that time, but I'm not sure anymore today. Now after severeal BIOS updates the "!" only leads to a beep of the system and I also tried all of my standard-passwords without "!" , but without success. Problem 2:Now I've tried to roll back to older BIOS versions to try if one of these accepts the "!". But every version I tried leads to a "secure flash authentication failed"-error after the reboot of the laptop to actually flash the BIOS. The following link says its the Rollback Prevention Enabled, but I checked in BIOS and it's clearly disabled.https://support.lenovo.com/sg/de/solutions/ht117858 Now I have no idea how to proceed. Has anyone seen that the BIOS has accepted special characters like "!"?Are there other T450s which are not able to rollback to older BIOS versions with the above mentioned error? Technical Infos:- Model: ThinkPad T450s 20BW-S03E00 (the one with Intel graphics only and a core i5-5200)- BIOS: 1.29(JBET65WW) Thanks in advance!  Best regards,Linus123

A:Why can I not enter my boot options when in my bios menu?

Hello jeplonski Welcome to the Seven Forums! The place to look would be in the user manual for either the system if premade or the board if a custom build to find out exactly which F key you need to press at post time that's right when first turning on the power or following a system restart when either the factory logo screen appears or doesn't if disabled in the bios setup program for the main board itself.

Often it will be the F4 if not F8 or F11, F12 keys that are used for bringing up the one time boot device menu. The Del key or another of the F keys will be assigned for entering the setup program right after the drives and other devices are detected at post. Once in the advanced section of the bios you will find the boot order for assigning which will be first as well as if only one, two, or three drives or devices will be set in order.

For installation from dvd in past years the dvd drive would be set as first often if there wasn't any boot device menu you could bring to select cd rom drive and see Windows installed. You had to go back in following first system restart once all the setup files had been copied from disk to hard drive to set the OS drive as the first in the boot order. Now we generally either boot from the dvd or a USB Installation Key made up using the one time boot option.

The boot device menu is not found in Windows at post time but an optional boot menu you bring up at post time. Typically you should be seeing the F key indicated right as the sys... Read more

Hello all,

I'm in a bit of a bind. I'm working on a computer that needs the boot order changed, so I can install an OS upgrade (2000 to XP Pro) and I can't get into the BIOS without the supervisor password. The individual who had/worked on the computer before has long gone, so that option is out. The default stuff won't work (admin, exec, password...and so on). I seem to remember that you can dislodge the battery, or switch the jumpers (although different motherboards might have different stuff), but It's been several years since I've had this problem and I can't remember the solution.

Any and all help would be appreciated.

There is no solution to a lost supervisor password other than replacing the motherboard.  As far as the HDD password, it is encrypted in the BIOS but the encryption algorithm is the same on most models of a similar age.  (You don't say what model you have.)  If you have another machine or anything T400 or newer with an ultrabay, you can remove the password there

2. We have another older machine that was setup in a way I am not familiar. When I power it on, I get 3 options

What are those 2 other options and can I remove them and set the computer up so it just automatically boots to the OS. I reformattd the hard drive and it didn't change anything,

Hello, I wonder if anyone can help ?

We have just started to put a supervisor password onto our Tecra A11 laptops so our pupils cannot set passwords on the hard drive etc.

To get into the BIOS and set a BIOS password, we press F2 as the machine starts.
We then go into the security option, then supervisor password.
Having entered the password we want to use twice, we press F10 to save etc.

The machine starts ok and goes in to windows without a hitch.

The problem we have now is that we cannot get back into the bios at all.
As the machine starts we press the F2 key as before but unlike previously the screen just remains blank and the 'Toshiba leading Innovation >>>' screen no longer appears.

If we keep our finger on the F" key or keep pressing it the laptop just restarts without ever getting to the BIOS screen where I assume we will get asked for the supervisor password we set earlier?

Is there another key we should be pressing as the laptop starts ?

I should add we have added a supervisor password for the BIOS security screen on three of our laptops and all three have the same issue.

Thanks

Steve

I think this should be useful for you:

In some cases you need to press the "INS" key while Toshiba logo appears.

Then a prompt for the Supervisor Password would appear and if the password is certified then the BIOS could be entered by pressing the "F2" key.

My Dell Precision M6800 has been hanging and not booting sometimes on and off for a year.  I've managed to coax it into working before by unplugging everything and taking it out of its station.   Now it won't start up no matter what I do.  REMEMBER I CAN'T GET INTO BIOS.
What I've done so far
1. removed all storage/hard drives one at a time.  Primary, secondary, optical, mSATA
2. pulled memory, tried each stick by self.
3. unplugged coin battery with power plug disconnected and laptop battery removed.  Left unplugged for more than a minute.
4. cleaned everything with compressed air.
So now what happens when I press F2:
1. I briefly get the yellow "entering setup" on the upper right of the screen
2. Then I get two lines of text:
Initializaing Intel(R) Boot Agent GE v1.5.50
PXE 2.1 Build 092 (WfM 2.0)
The same thing happens when I press F12 except the yellow text changes to "Preparing one-time boot menu"
I've tried putting a freshly made windows 10 usb install media  in a usb  slot and the same thing happens

Hello philetus now this begs the question what is on that USB stick? If it some form of Windows 7 media I am wondering how you managed to get it on a stick and also have you updated the USB drivers.

I am also concerned that you have been into the BIOS and changed it around like that not that I am any great expert on what should be changed, but I do know I had to change a few of the EUFI settings on my Asus ROG to get it to boot 7 which included changing the BIOS to the latest version before I could install 7 drivers.

The water has shorted out the charging system on the motherboard. For future reference, if you spill any liquid on a laptop, open it up fully, and turn it over upside down on a towel and bounce it gently for a few times. Leave it there for 24 hours Your laptop is most likely toast...

Hello everyone,I had Ubuntu 17.10 and Windows 10 dual boot and were working normally, I formatted the laptop's hard disk outside the laptop and deleted all partitions and returned it back into the laptop...now when I open the laptop it shows me "Ubuntu boot failed" message and when I continue it shows me "Windows boot manager boot failed" message and after I continue it ends up at this screenI tried to burn an iso of windows or linux on a usb or dvd and entered the boot menu it shows the boot from usb option but when I choose it I get boot failed message and the only working option is the "SATA HDD" and I think it works in legacy mode because if I make the bootable usb using rufus and choose gpt for uefi scheme it won't boot I tried to change that from the bios menu but any change in the settings of the bios menu returns back after restarting the only change that stays is the clock and dateAny suggestions to how boot normally in UEFI without getting boot failed ?

I've just bought this laptop, and it came with windows 8 preinstalled, and I'm trying to install Windows 7 on it.

I have a bootable usb, which I've used many times to install Windows on my other laptops, but the B590 just wont do it. I feel like I've tried everything. I changed the boot priority order in BIOS with USB HDD as number 1 but it still just boots into windows 8.

I've tried removing everything but USB devices from the boot order, and now I get this boot menu:
http://i.imgur.com/1iV2iaW.jpg

Which is exactly what I want to boot from, but when I press enter to boot from the USB device, nothing happens. It's incredibly frustrating.

The USB device IS bootable with a primary partition. I've used these steps to make it bootable in DISKPART:
http://social.technet.microsoft.com...how-to-deploy-windows-7-from-a-usb-drive.aspx

After having no luck on the B590, I tried booting on the USB on a different computer, and it works perfectly well. Starts installing windows 7. So it seems like the problem is not with my usb device.

I even tried restoring the USB drive and using Lenovo Bootable Generator application to make the usb bootable, with the same result.

Can anyone help?

I own a Lenovo G700, and I have heard that Shift + F2 will get you into the BIOS. It might work if all else fails. You can also call Lenovo support or search around a bit more. But in my case I have to use the hardware OneKey Recovery button to access it.

This has been asked a couple times, so... click search at the top of this page, put content advisor for the keyword click start search and start reading. One of them has a link to site that may help. The second one I think.

I am begging for help as this problem is driving me insane! To start the story Windows 10 asked me to upgrade last year, and God I wish I didn't. I had nothing but problems with the OS, mainly down to it being unsupported for my notebook by HP. I Decided to roll back to Windows 8 and during the rollback, the notebook has failed catastrophically! 'Luckily' the recovery option kicked in, but this also failed and crashed mid recovery.  I am now left with the boot failing immediatley and showing a BCD error 0x0000034. (press esc for UEFI). Once in UEFI the only option that doesnt bring the same BCD error is the HP System Test. This works ok and the system passes all tests (including hard drive which though a lot of searching online is often the root cause of the above error) I want to enter the BIOS settings and set it to boot from USB in order to use my windows recovery USB, but pressing F11 or F10 goes straight to the Blue screen of death with the same error above! I am fairly proficient with computers and managed quite a few repairs etc, but this loop of blue screen with no conceivable boot option is driving me insane! Someone please help! Thanks in advance, Thebgb!

thebgb Hello;Allow me to welcome you to the HP forums!Sorry, but I don't have very good news for you ...The Win10 Upgrade is know to corrupt the Recovery partition stored there by the OEM that built the original machine. This pretty much guarantees that no HP Recovery is going to work: http://h30434.www3.hp.com/t5/Desktop-Video-Display-and-Touch/HP-Recovery-Manager-Blocked-After-Windo...This means that RESET no longer works on your laptop due to your doing the Win10 Upgrade. To actually restore your PC to its original condition, you need something known as HP Recovery Media.HP Recovery Media is a set of DVDs and a CD, or USB stick, that will erase the hard drive (removing all data, settings, and applications, reinstall the original OS, drivers, and some HP Utilities. In some cases, you may be able to order a USB stick instead of disks. You have to order these from HP; they can not be downloaded. You can look online for Recovery Media starting with the linked paged: http://support.hp.com/us-en/driversOnce there, input your Product name or number. On your Software and Drivers Download page, select your Operating System and and Version. Click "Update". If HP Recovery Media is available for your machine, down near the bottom of the page, you will see an entry for Order Recovery Media-CD/DVD/USB. Click the "+" symbol to expand that entry and click on Order Media for details.Or, if you prefer, you can do the same by contacting HP Customer Service:If you live in the US or Canada,... Read more

Hello,
I am having problems with direct booting into Windows 8 installed into a VHDX file.
This is a four-partition UEFI boot on a GPT drive. EFI files are residing on a second partition of disk 0 (the ESP partition) in the EFI folder. The boot virtual disk is residing on the fourth partition of that disk 0.
When I turn on the PC, it shows black screen after the BIOS POST screen. No Windows 8 boot menu, no other information is displayed. However, if I press Shift+F12 (or F12) to start Dell BIOS Boot Menu and choose Windows Boot Manager from the UEFI part of
the boot menu, Windows 8 starts to boot without difficulties.
How do I make Windows to boot automatically without having to select Windows Boot Manager in DELL BIOS boot menu?
I believe I messed up with boot sector somehow... What needs to be fixed provided that Windows 8 will boot into VHDX file?
Thank you.

Well this is the world we live in And these are the hands we're given...

Hi there!

Well I'd like to thank in advance for the help you can provide to me guys, I've done a scan using the HJT and I have a log file but let's get my problem clear before going on.

As you know Win XP has the option to show all hidden files, well my lap top is not showing that option, you are supposed to find it on the menu tools>folder options (I'm not sure about it, my OS is not in english, the spanish option is herramientas>opciones de carpeta) I've done a system restore (format hard disk and re-install Windows, using the recovery CD's provided by the manufacturer) and everything was fine then I installed Windows SP 2 and Live Messenger and after the system restart the option was gone!

So I cannot access my hidden files, I've read that I have to change some entries on the registry editor, but you know what? I've tried to do so but I get a message "this option was locked by the system admin" I am the administrator and I never locked the registry editor. Can some of you guys tell what the problem is?

Hope I've been clear about this, any comments welcome. This is the log from HJT
