Very slow desktop and weird activity

Q: Very slow desktop and weird activity

Hi
I'm trying to set up a computer that has given me trouble in the past.
It runs VERY slow and acts weird at times.
I attempted to run GMER but it errored out every time.
I hope the files that I have attached help.
Yesterday I noticed that there was an Internet proxy going somewhere. I disabled the Ethernet interface and deleted it.
Thanks for the help!
Jim

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

Hello and welcome to BleepingComputer! I am Elle and I will be helping you out with your problem. Firstly, you should know that we are working with specific tools which are used to identify the possible threats present on your system so I will analyze the results they produce. As a start we need to have some more up-to-date logs than the ones you have already provided. The current state of the files on your system might have changed so we need to get a clear look on that aspect. DO NOT bring any changes to the system except the ones I tell you to as that may produce more damage than helping us. If you will encounter a delay of over 2 days from me, please don't hesitate and private message me (link in the signature). Do not forget to check your topic periodically and subscribe to it so that you can receive notifications regarding my replies. Please generate another DDS log (download it from http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/sUBs/dds.com'>here if you haven't already) and post it in your next reply along with other changes that may have occured since you last posted. Also download and run GMER from this link: GMER download link.Thank you very much for your patience. Hey all,

So I've been having this problem where my computer is constantly laggy and I noticed that my computer tower is constantly "loading". I'm not sure if thats the correct term but the yellow light that shows processing activity is constantly blinking and you can always hear certain sounds coming from it, even if I'm doing nothing at all. Even at startup, I will constantly get clicking sounds from the tower and I noticed that a disk boot sound comes on once after I login to my user name. This had never happened before, and usually only get a disk boot sound directly after turning on the computer or when scanning for viruses. I dont know if its a virus or just a system problem but I remember getting viruses which will constantly cause activity the computer.

This started when my virus scanner McAfee expired. I uninstalled it and installed Trendmicro. I had to uninstall Spybot and Malwarebytes prior to installing Trendmicro but reinstalled it after. I also installed AV antivirus because I thought it was similar to Spybot and Malwarebytes where it would be like a secondary program I can use as backup. But when I installed AV, it started automatically and interefered with my Trendmicro and I had to do a bunch of things to uninstall it or disable it. On Trendmicros first scan, it found one virus, Malwarebytes found nothing and Spybot found a couple things. I had not run Spybot in a while though, but usually only get cookies. This time it found cookies but also ... Read more

Hello and welcome.

I think the issues stem from remnants of multiple antivirus programs.

For AVG

After uninstalling AVG from the Control Panel, also run the AVG remover from their site.

AVG - Download tools

direct link to the AVG Remover:

http://download.avg.com/filedir/util..._2011_1184.exe

For McAfee

Download the McAfee Removal Tool
http://download.mcafee.com/products/...tches/MCPR.exe

Double click on MCPR.exe to launch it, then Click Run. A window should appear and disappear, this is normal. A new window should popup and begin the uninstall. When prompted to reboot your computer type Y

After running both tools, post new DDS logs.

My Windows7 32-bit computer is really slow and some operation take an extremely long time. I would like to see what steps I can take to begin diagnosing. Several times I have run Hi-Jack this 2.0.5 to try and see if anything obvious comes up. I have not seen anything that I believe is unusual.

Hello, my name is GLaDOS and I will be helping you today.
So first thing is download malwarebytes antimalware from here
after you download it install it and update the database, after that run a quick scan and wait for it to finish and post the log here.
Thank you.

Hey, I have a somewhat new PC, only about a month old. I bought a few computer games for my PC the same day I got the computer, they played fine. Up until recently my system has been acting weird, taking longer to load pages, taking longer to open programs, and gaming performance seems to have decreased. I scanned with norton antivirus, and ad-aware, cleaning up everything I found. Could you maybe take a look at my hijackthis log?

Must be that time of the year again, as my PC is acting weird. Not sure if it is the full moon or did something creep into my system. My PC is slower than normal and has rebooted itself several times.

I am using XP Pro and McAfee Total Protection which is up to date. I did a scan using McAfee and it comes back clean. I rebooted into safe mode with networking and ran a Panda Online scan. First time it restarted in the middle of the scan. The second time it said it found stuff, but it was mostly tracking cookies.

I am attaching a HJT log and the Panda results. Suggestions?

Ok, my 1st time here, seemed like a good place for some advice.

My basic problem i'm connected to a network and it seems to be changing its security type. jumping from WPA2-PSK to WEP.

I'm using this same wifi antenna. What's weird is no other detectable network does this. my pc's network access menu only rarely shows the change from wpa2-psk to wep but I did get inSSIDer for checking this thing, and it does show its changing security types about every minute or so.

The other strange thing it would never let me connect at all with just entering the key, only by manually making a network. sometimes it shows full bars, others (like now when i'm typing) it shows a red X over the icon.

I went and checked 192.168.0.1 for any strangeness but can't find anything in there, but it is broadcasting 2 separate frequencies, 2.4 and 5 GHz at the same time. I can see that both frequencies are set to use WPA2-PSK, with the same password but different SSIDs.

The noticeable thing is when it has the red X the internet seems slower, and tends to just not let anything after the 1st few minutes of using the net.

Any ideas what's going on with this stuff? i've never seen any network do this.
And yes, i'm on neighbors wifi, and they do know i'm poking around. any help would be appreciated.

P.S. I can do screenshots if needed/appropriate.

A:Weird Wifi Activity

howdy and welcome. Whether or not the neighbor knows about your using their wifi is immaterial, as it's the ISP that makes the call as to whether or not it's legal. And ISP's do not allow that, unfortunately, so I'm going to have to close this one up.

thanks for understanding,

Today's crash was odd though: I forced a restart when it became unresponsive (i was installing updates at the time) and as it loaded it came up with the usual safe mode suggestions, but then, after telling it to start normally, it came up with a black screen with some white text and was cycling through registry keys. It was over very quickly so I'm afraid i cannot give more details, but i remember seeing "600 items" or something similar. Is this a vista recovery operation or something more sinister? After it was done, the computer didn't continue to load up but restarted itself, at which point it loaded fine.

Anyone know what this was? Thanks.

Oh, i also checked the reliability tool but nothing reported for the 13th.

Hi. . .

Given the fact that you experienced a BSOD on a 1 week-old new laptop and now seeing the information on subsequent crashes, I would recommend that you reset the laptop back to factory condition by re-installing Vista via the recovery partition.

Usually you press an F key to invoke the recovery partition - it may be F10, F11, ctrl-F11, or the esc key. Look in your owners manual for the exact key/combination.

This will place your system back to the way it was when you turned it on for the first time.

If you have difficulties or questions, please let me know.'

In my Windows Task manager I have this: "rundll32.exe msvcrt.dll,sleep". This process hogs memory and CPU time like crazy. It can go to 550MB of RAM and 50% of CPU time pretty quickly one it starts up. I end this process from time to time, but it comes on again after a while. I end it 3 to 4 times a day. I was wondering if my msvcrt.dll is hijacked by some virus?

Hello All,

I have a weird activity going on with my HP laptop. The laptop is a custom DV3. Here are the specs:

Windows 7 Ultimate 64-Bit (upgraded in place from Windows Vista Home Premium 64bit)
Intel Core 2 Duo P7550 @ 2.26 GHz
BIOS version: F.12
4GB DDR3 ram
NVidia Geforce G 105M w/ 512MB dedicated video ram
HDD: WDC WD2500BEKT-60F3T1
I have been noticing that my computer has been slow lately and that every time I restart, Win7 starts the chkdsk command at boot. The abnormal thing is that it hangs at the end of the "hit any button to skip check" countdown. The other issue that I have is that under Disk Defrag, my C: drive does not show up. I believe that this is due to the "dirty bit" being active on the C: drive.

I have tried to do the commands listed on this page: http://forums.techguy.org/windows-xp/465184-volume-dirty.html
and unfortunately I am in the same position. I do not want to let this issue run rampant and I feel that I am at a stand still with it.

Any help or advice would be awesome. I am hoping I do not have to format to fix this issue.

have had no issue at all for a long time and all was well. Then this week I was on my pc (Windows XP) and went to shut down the pc, but when I went to Start to look for shute down it was not there and neither was the Run command. I researched online and found out it maybe called the quickinfo virus. I followed a few steps and got back the run command and shutdown button. I though all was fine but now when I go to open Adobe Photoshop CS I get and error I must have Admin rights to load program and it shuts down. I looked at user accounts and their is only one mine and it has admin rights. Also if I hit ctrl+alt+delete it says it has been diabled as I do not have admin rights.

How do I fix this issue?

Is this the name of the virus I have, or is it something else?

I pasted what I followed to get links back below just as FYI. Please help as I can not do any work. Thanks Much
Open a command prompt (CMD) from accessories menu -> type "gpedit.msc" expand the user configuration node -> expand admin templates -> click "Start Menu and Taskbar -> int he right pane look for "remove run menu from start menu from start menu" it should be set to "not configured" if it is double click it set to enable, click apply, then set to disable and click apply. if it's set to enabled then set to disable. Reboot and see if run's back on the start menu.

Decided to come here before I decide to reformat and be left in the lurch and basically updateless.

Backstory: OK so the household has never had 'decent' internet as such and it has always been quite slow because of where we are, old house, etc etc.
We must be on some sort of low band 'talktalk' internet which has to be 3mb or 4mb at the most 5mb, nothing major. It is forever lagging out often reconnecting seconds later or there has been problems with our regional providing tower which means we've been out of internet due to technical problems or weather
Speed.net tests have resulted in around the 4.5mb on a good day and that's if noones using except on person. When everyone is using it its considerably slower because of the obvious bandwidth consumption.

So lately, and realising the problem it must be for a good 3-4 months now, things have been becoming a bit temperamental to do with the internet connectivity from the wireless router to my laptop. But it was only little things so I just assumed it was bandwidth or our provider had done something etc.

Well anyway, things like messengers started signing themselves out and then back in again, often lagging out before it happens meaning I don't get what people have said or messages haven't been sent. This happens mostly for Live Messenger and Skype. Only Skype now because I no longer use Live Messenger and for ever have to appear offline to save them from me constantly loggi... Read more

When I first start up my pc, whenever I open a folder with files in it, if I haven't opened that folder since it was shut down, my hard drive starts accessing and my mouse pointer turns into the little circle while it's waiting for something to finish. At that point I can't do much of anything until it's finished, which takes around half a minute or so usually. It happens with a folder with media files in it, and even just text files. What could be causing this? It's very annoying. Could it be my antivirus (Avira)? Is Windows doing this? Could I have some setting enabled in Windows that causes this to happen? Once the folder is opened and it stops whatever it was doing, it won't happen again until I shut off the pc and open that folder again. It seems something is scanning the files in the folders when I open them.

Also my windows update install all updates that were down loaded except for these: 'Update for Background Intelligent Transfer Service (BITS) 2.0 and WinHTTP 5.1 (KB842773)'. I have scanned for viruses and nothing so this is my next stop.

I used a pro android app called jump remote desktop from my android tablet which allowed me to control my moms PC but it logged her out of her PC so she got a blank display while I controlled it. If I use the integrated W8 pro remote desktop would my mom also be logged out and get a blank screen? How about the chrome web browser remote desktop extension? Am I right this is the only way that I can control her PC while she can still see what I'm doing. Does chrome extension log her out of windows? Another problem with having her log out of windows is then the next time she turns on her PC she will be asked for windows password even though we have it setup to start windows without asking for sign in info. Hi - On my pc tower there is a small light (near the lighted power button) that flickers and I believe this indicates that there is pc 'activity' going on. However, my computer tower is out-of-view and there are times when I question if my machine has halted. So, I seek a small, lightweight desktop dynamic icon/app that emulates that activity light. Is there anything out there?

-thnx

A:PC Activity Desktop Graphic

That is the hard drive activity LED. It "flickers" when there is data being read from or written to the hard drive. I don't know of a program that will emulate that light, but there are several Hard Drive monitors that show a graph and show activity. As far as your machine halted, I assume you mean hanging up? The little spinning wheel that takes place of the mouse pointer will let you know if it has or not. It's not terribly important that you keep a close eye on the HDD activity light honestly, but if you still want a hard drive monitor, I'm sure we can find you one.

So recently, I corrupted my explorer.exe while modifying the icons. I had a backup of the original explorer.exe, so I went into elevated command prompt via Ctrl + File > Run new task in Task manager (elevated command prompt). This worked, but for some reason, now when I go to my desktop, I have a black background.

Along with that problem, the desktop fades to black in one second if there is no activity on the desktop. If I open a window on the desktop, it wont fade to black. If I draw a big enough selection box with my mouse on the desktop with no window open, the desktop will stay open until I let the selection box go. When the desktop is black, I can still click and select my desktop icons (if I click in the right place).

I think this is the weirdest problem I've ever had with Windows, it can't be anything with drivers or it would do it with everything. So with what I just said "or it would do it with everything" I mean to say, everything else works perfectly fine, Apps, Startscreen, etc.

If you have a restore point previous to the icon change that should fix it up.

well, as we can't really help out with business machines (that's what the IT department is for), I'd recommend bouncing this off of either your IT dept or your immediate boss and explain your situation.

As it sounds valid, I'd imagine that you shouldn't have any issue working with your IT dept to get a viable work-around policy. I actually work in the IT dept, and when we shortened the lock-down time of inactive computers, ran into this exact issue with the coder monkeys, who are obviously going to be spending some time staring at screens to see if the app is working as directed. They notified their boss, their boss let us know, we just created a separate OU for them and upped the inactive limit to the old time.

So that's where I'd start. But as we can't help with this, or recommend any apps that do this, I'm going to close this thread.

Thanks,

I've been noticing some strange behavior lately which I think may be tied to low performing files and/or disk clutter. Sometimes when I open up a new folder with many items inside, I see that the icons on the desktop refresh slowly and the hard drive is constantly accessed until it's done. This keeps happening on a regular basis so I'm trying to figure out what exactly is causing it. I've defragmented my system drive and secondary drive, which sped things up a bit, but that didn't really fix the problem. I also ran a disk cleanup and I'm wondering if I should do a registry scan or something.

I also have a similar problem with a folder full of application files. The system seems to "struggle" when trying to fetch the icons, for there are a lot of them in there. I've had Windows XP installed on this computer for over a year so perhaps it needs a tuneup? The problem isn't so severe that it renders the machine useless or anything, it's more of an annoyance. Anyways, I'd appreciate anyone's input on this. Thanks in advance.

I don't really know if this is an operating system problem or not. My computer is running very slowly at the moment. I'm experiencing long delays waiting for programs to open, my browser (I use Chrome) often acts buggy when opening and loading pages, but I've reinstalled it and fiddled with my extensions etc. and none of them seem to be causing problems. I have turned off thumbnail caching because it was causing explorer to crash multiple times a day, particularly in folders containing .avi files.

It's not an internet problem. My core temperature is fine, and none of my processor cores are showing undue stress. This computer was built about three months ago and has never been very taxed. I play a lot of games on it, but not with particularly high settings.

I run an AMD Athlon II x4 with an ASRock motherboard. 1.60 GHz, 3.5GB RAM, 500GB hd with over 100GB free space.

Any ideas what could be causing this/how I can fix it?

A:Slow Activity on Computer

This issue can be caused by any of the below possibilities.

Not enough hard disk space.
Left over programs and bad files.
Data Corruption.
Missing Windows updates / Outdated drivers.
Corrupt OS.
Bad Hardware.
Temp Files.
Malware.

I suggest following these steps carefully.

A:Hijack log - PC is very Slow, a lot of HD activity

HIJackThis isn't intended to solve performance problems unless they are derived from an exploit. I don't see that here at first glance but what I do see are a lot of pointless background processes probably eating up free RAM.
CHeck Black Viper's site for tuning the services in XP. It should help considerably. Also you might want to turn off "Write Behind Caching" if your running an IDE drive. This added a bump in disk performance.

I recently installed Windows XP Pro (fresh install) a few days ago windows began to slow down (very very slow).

I found an article about system slow down that suggested I disable Terminal Services, I disabled this and the system speeded up a little, it appears the only way I can get a decent speed is to move my mouse erratically, doing this somehow causes applications to load and run faster, while moving the mouse the hard disk light is flashing fast, when the mouse isn?t moving the light is flashing slow and the program takes ages to load, while scanning for Ad-ware it usually takes about 2 minutes with this new slowdown it took about 3 hours.. I tried it again, this time moving the mouse and it took about 5 minutes.

I have Service Pack 1 for XP and all other updates.

PC-Cillin 2003 (Fully Registered)
Ad-ware 6.0 Professional (Not Free Version)
SpyBot S&D (Latest Version and Latest Includes)

I have a trend Micro firewall, and a firewall built into the router.

pls Help

A:XP Pro Slow if there is no mouse activity!

I have a trend Micro firewall, and a firewall built into the router.

Don't know if that is causing the problem but I wouldn't use 2 firewalls.

SP1 slowed down my PC. You might want to delete it in Add/Remove Programs to see if things improve...you can always reinstall it.

(I first posted this in the "Utilities and other programs," thread, because it asks about registry cleaner. But the overall problem is internet speed).

I'm currently running WinMe, IE 5.5, 256mb ram, pentium III processor. Have noticed within last couple of weeks that all internet activity has slowed considerably, and right now it seems worse than dial-up. Cable tech was here today - the problem is definitely not on their end, signal & modem are fine. Download speed is 933 kbps right now. I ran a virus scan yesterday & deleted a trojan & 2 other detected files. Also had deleted several trojans & malware about 2 weeks ago. I haven't installed any new programs. Was thinking a registry cleaner could possibly help. Can anyone recommend one? And any other suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

Hi. I run ad-adware SE and norton all the time. I don't file share or visit any adult sites. I block pop-ups and do not accept cookies. When I start up the cpu, it takes a long time. I delete my cookies in internet settings and I run ad-adware almost everyday. How else can I access what cookies or things my cpu might be trying to load up when starting up. It runs slower than usual also when using the cpu. Also how do I post my hijack this log? Any help would be appreciated so I can get my cpu running like normal again. Thanks.

Before I start, I should say that my computer is so bad off at this point that I can't even use it to post this message. I'm posting from a laptop, not my PC.

I mistyped a common, and trusted, URL and I ended up getting this ridiculous virus on my computer. My desktop icons, specifically spybot search and destroy, combofix, and anti-malware are UNCLICKABLE. They do not load, or respond in anyway to double clicking. Smitfraud gives me an error message. My Firefox and IE redirect to "Insecure Internet Activity" and says that my computer is at risk or unprotected from viruses, and offers two links to "solve the problem." Since posting this, Firefox just crashes every time I try to load it up. If I try to sign on AIM (which I did to send myself the HijackThis log) the program CLOSES ITSELF in a few minutes. What could possibly be wrong??

As I mentioned, I was able to get a HijackThis log and send it to myself. Please, please help. I use this computer for work and school and any help getting it up and running again soon will be EXTREMELY appreciated.

Hey guys,
I've had a look around the forums and haven't seen anything like my issue so I hope it's okay to post this.

I build a custom computer about a year ago, and everything has 3 years warranty.

About a month ago my computer started blue screening when I tried to play any games, and if I accidentally knocked the desk it would freeze. It then completely stopped turning on, even though the actual computer was running... nothing was showing on the monitor.

However when the graphics card was taken out, it started up fine. So my mate put it down to a faulty graphics card and we got it replaced.

I got said graphics card back yesterday, put it back in and re installed the necessary driver and hey presto it worked! ...for a while. I started playing assassins creed and 15min into the game, my computer crashed. I decided to reformat my computer to ensure there isn't any undetected virus or software faults, but the freezes and random restarts continue to happen afterwards.

So I've used my computer today for about an hour, just browsing the internet and no problems. As soon as I run skype, it randomly restarts again.

I checked the hardware with HWMonitor and everything is running fine.

This is my build:

Corsair Vengeance CMZ8GX3M2A1600C9 8GB (2x4GB) DDR3

2 BitFenix Spectre 120mm Black Tinted Blue LED Fan

The computer seems to slow down after 2-4 hours of activity. McAfee has not found anything and ad-aware found some tracking cookies. I have not found the source of the problem since it keeps happening. I have also deleted all cookies to see if that was slowing me down, still did not work. Thus far the only thing I have found that works is a reboot.Below is the hijackthis log when the computer was running slow. Does not appear to be anything wrong here. What happens when it slows down? Have you looked at task manager to see what is using up your memory and/or CPU?

Everytime I power up my PC, its like its doing a scan although I have not scheduled or initiated a scan. I go to control panel and click the symantic icon and I get a message
Another instance of LiveUpdate was dedicated or something like that.. This can occur when LiveUpdate is running silently... etc

I'm not sure if this is the cause, but it takes 5 minutes or more for all this disk activity to cease and I can do something.

any ideas?

A:slow start up because of disk activity

As soon as you get to the desktop, hit Ctrl+Alt+Del to bring up the Task Manager and take a screenshot of the Applications & Processes section.Next, post those screenshots here for further inputs. Also disable Automatic Live Update under Settings, in the Norton Anti Virus Control Panel. See if that improves the startup time.

Hi,
I have a Samsung N150 Netbook and until recently has been running fine.
Now its incredibly slow and there seems to be lots of HDD activity.
Running The Resource Monitor doesnt show me much, it always says that resource monitor itself is using the HDD lots and that the Pagefile is quite high.

Im running Windows 7 Starter Edition as the OS.

I have 1GB RAM which isnt at a high usage so should the pagefile be accessed so much?

I've removed all recently install software with no change. I've ran virus scans in both safe mode and normal mode with nothing found (Virus scan was freezing after a few minutes in normal mode though). Ran MalwareBytes Anti Malware, Ran Spybot, they didnt come up with anything.
Im usually ok at diagnosing problems but this one has stumped me!

In safe mode it ran alot better, so it has to be something im running, but really cant find out what! I've tried disabling a few different services that i thought might be causing the issue, but nothing.

If you need anymore info from me let me know.

Thanks
