T450s - Can't get system to boot from new M.2

Q: T450s - Can't get system to boot from new M.2

UPDATE: Finally finally managed to change boot order... still refuses to boot from new M.2 unless I use the F12 boot menu.I even excluded the old one from the boot menu... now it just launches into repair mode. Why will it boot from the new M.2 (which is now the C drive) just fine with the F12, but not just by turning it on?I've installed a new 256 M.2. The system insists on booting off the old 16BG drive (which had Win10 pre-installed), even though I've made the new one the C drive. The old one is now E, and unless I used the F12 boot menu, it always boots from the 16 GB M.2.I migrated Win10, and it will boot fine... if I use the boot menu. BUT... I've changed the 16 GB drive to E:, and the new one to C. Why, why, why does it keep insisting on booting from the now E: drive? I even deleted files off it, now it just gets errors and I have to use the F12 boot menu every time to boot from the C: drive.I've searched for hours... and hours... for a way to change the boot order. But Lenovo seems to have (malevelontly, because they hate me) removed that menu from the BIOS. How the heck do I change this? Please?

I recommend downloading and running DRP. It's a recovery tool that has been proven to recover files that most other programs have no luck with. I've even recovered files from freshly formatted or partitioned drives.

You can download it direct from this link http://goo.gl/v51TwD. (This link will automatically start a download of DRP that you can save to your computer.)

So it looks like I got a lemon of a T450s. Since day 1 it has been nothing but trouble. Operating systems don't easily install (crash at different points during the install), all applications and system utilities keep on crashing, it reboots randomly etc. There is much whaling and gnashing of teeth.  To me it seems like a bad memory issue, but memtest shows up nothing after running for 48 hours, and all the Lenovo diagnostic tests run successfully. I've changed the hard drive twice, and removed the additional 4GB RAM that is not soldered to the board. I am guessing the issue is with th RAM that is soldered to the board.  The unit was bought in the US, where I am not, and apparently I don't have IWS, even though I bought the extended 3 year warranty.  As a next step, I am going to replace the system board myself. The model is 20BX-CTO1WW and from what I gather the system board I need is part# 00HT736.  Finally to my question: I was wondering if someone could tell me if I have any other system board options for this model type, as I may be interested in upgrading the CPU while I am at it.

Hi, I have a user at my company the let's her T450's battery rundown to empy... (She leaves it in sleep mode over the weekend and the battery dies) This happend a while back and I had to leave the laptop on charge all day, unplug the battery, hit the reset button on the back and then plug everything back in for it to start up again.   Today, this issue happend again where the user ran the battery down to 0% and now the laptop will not boot up at all.  I tried the following things noted below but all the laptop does is display three quick power button flashes when I plug the power cable into it.   *Uplug the power cable and the battery.  Hit the reset button on the back and then tried to power it on - Nothing*Uplug the power cable and the battery.  Hold the power button down for 30 seconds and then tried to pwer it on - Nothing Going to leave it sit for a while but I do not think this is normal when someone runs the batter down to 0%.   Has this happened to anyone else or is this laptop dead and I will need to send it in for service?  Would like some thoughts on this...  Thanks!

Hello, My T540s (which just ran out of warranty ...) has a very weird issue : When I try to boot (clicking the power button), the fan starts turning, the keyboard's backlight turns on, but ... a second later (even before the Thinkpad logo shows up), the whole computer crashes and shuts down !Where it gets even more special is that from time to time (1 out of 1000) the computer boots normally, although giving me this warning :Secure Flash Authentification FailedCapsule Data is invalid_ I'm kind of lost right now, really don't know how to get that fixed. My friends think that my motherboard needs to be changed, but I really want to be sure before buying a new one (very expensive). I suspect a bug in the BIOS (recent update failed ?) ... What do you think ? Does anyone have or had the same problem ? Thanks for helping, Best, Sylvain E.K.  PS: Running Win7 64bit

A:T450s random crashes on boot

One possibility: damaged USB port.  This was known to happen on some older T-series laptops.  Bent USB port pins would short power, causing the quick shutdown.

It's not likely in your case (would be 1000 failures out of 1000...) but worth a quick check.

My year-and-a-half old T450s stopped booting up. Yesterday I was prompted for a Windows update and restarted the machine, as usual. After the update, I'm able to turn it on but it wont boot up. It shows the initial screen, with the "Lenovo" logo and won't proceed beyond.I tried taking out one battery and then holding the on/off button for 30 seconds, and also the emergency reset on the bottom, but neither changed anything. It simply won't go beyond the initial screen. Does anyone have any thoughts? Thanks in advance.

I think you are experiencing the same issue I have. If you notice after the Lenovo boot logo the display still stays on its just black, what it appears to be for me is a video failure after trying to update to windows 10 anniversary update. Try plugging in an external monitor and see if you get display, I did in my case.  Remove your hard drive and restart the PC, this should get the bios working again, go into your bios and disable secure boot so you can boot to a USB. Create a bootable USB 3.0 using a USB3.0 drive (formatted to NTFS) from Microsoft's site - https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows10/ Then goto repair my computer and choose rollback update, this will get you running again.  I have a p50 with Nvidia M1000M dedicated graphics, so I am still trying to figure out if this is a driver issue.

Since its encounter a couple of weeks ago, I have been unsuccessful in fully downloading and installing this specific Driver for my computer. Is there any indication of issues for this Drive? And what should I do to resolve it? Also, if the Driver can't be properly updated, what is its purpose for my system? Any form of help concerning this Driver update issue would be appreciated.

Hi all,
Windows 7 Pro 32bit
I have a captured image and I booted into PE on my target system. I used Diskpart:

select drive 1
clean
create partition primary
format quick fs=ntfs label="Win7 32bit"
assign letter="C"
exit

Then I applied the image with imagex:

imagex /apply e:\testimage.wim 1 c:\

The image applied, but now when I try to boot (After removing the PE boot disc), it tries to network boot and gives me the message "Operating System Not Found. I made sure to reset my boot order to HD>removable>CD>Network.
Do I need to manually create a small partition responsible for booting? What steps do I take from here? I was surprised that googling didn't lead me to my specific problem, but mostly problems involving SCCM and large scale deployments.

Thanks in advance,
Joe

A:I deployed an image and then tried to boot it, but the system tried to network boot instead and then gave me the message "Operating System Not Found"

In your diskpart, you need to add

act

To make partition active

After applying image, you need to create BCD environment with:

bcdboot C:\Windows

Note

Drive letter C: is whatever you used in command:

Imagex /apply e:\testimage.wim 1 c:\

If you would use two partition setup as suggested by other posters, then the small 100 MB partition would be C: and the "Windows" partition would be "D:". Hence, you would use

bcdboot D:\Windows

I've got a 100 gig hard drive divided into a primary C partition and a second logical partition (E drive). (I also have a separate hard drive, which is D, which I use for backups). This is a dual boot system - the C drive has Windows ME on it, which I don't use anymore, and the E drive has Windows XP Pro.

I'm wanting to find out if I can turn this dual boot system into a single boot system, so that I just have Windows XP on my system. Windows XP is now on the E partition. I'd like to avoid having to reinstall the XP operating system and having to re-install all my applications, etc. Is there a way to simplify this process of going from an ME/XP dual boot setup to an XP setup? Is there some automatic way to use so that XP and the applications on E will now migrate to C?

I'd appreciate tips and suggestions on how to accomplish this. I have Partition Magic, so I can use that if it's helpful. Thanks very much. Please feel free to e-mail directly: [email protected]

I have a T450S laptop. It came with 8 GB of RAM (4 on the board and 4 GB SO-DIMM). I replaced the SO-DIMM with a Crucial 16GB one. When I look at the system information, it indicates that I have all 20 GB of RAM available. I recently asked the computer to do a relatively big, but not that big, processing job that took a long time (14 minutes). While it was crunching, I checked the resource monitor and it indicated that only 3.9 GB of the RAM were being used and that  ~16GB were available - but the extra 16 wasn't being used, just sitting there being available. When the processing completed, the resource monitor still says that 3.5 GB are being used with "regular" computing - so basically, nothing was different with the big job compared to just ordinary tasks. How do I make the computer use all of the memory that it has? I've looked all over for some sort of setting.?

According to this website: http://www.pugetsystems.com/labs/articles/Overview-of-M-2-SSDs-586/m.2 slot comes in different flavors (SATA III, PCI-E 2.0 x2, PCI-E 2.0 x4 and PCI-E 3.0 x4) I would like to know what is the supported protocols for the T450s laptop. I'm asking this questions becauce I would like to buy a m.2 SSD disk to replace the "too small" 16GB that I have and I would like to know if it's worthwhile buying the Samsung SM951 that supports PCI-E 3.0 x4. Thank you.

A:T450s m.2 SSD

Good day and welcome to the community.

Apologies that I can't answer the SATA vs PCI-E portion of your question with any certainty. I can say, though, that the SM951 won't fit physically in your machine. That SSD is a 22x80mm form factor (2280) while your machine takes the 22x42 form factor (2242).

Please have a look at your hardware manual:
http://download.lenovo.com/pccbbs/mobiles_pdf/t450s_hmm_en_sp40g54937.pdf
where manual page 66 describes removal / installation.

Then, have a look at the FRU BOM:
http://download.lenovo.com/parts/ThinkPad/t450s_frubom_20150126.pdf
and on the last page you'll see the only factory part listed is the 16GB M.2 2242 SSD normally used for caching (I believe).

You should still be able to install a higher capacity 2242 M.2 SSD in that slot, though. The largest M.2 2242 SSD I've seen is also 256GB, but I haven't searched exhaustively.

Hope this helps a bit.
Regards.

Hello everyone,I just updated my Thinkpad T450s from W7 to W10.What a disappointment, I lost all features Lenovo that make all the appeal of this laptop.Of course I also have Lenovo Lenovo Vantage, the only change is that the battery charge appears in green. So 2 questions:1) The T450s sold with windows10, did they have the Lenovo features?2) Is it possible in this case, to reinstall a recovery T450s in w10 on this laptop?cordially

A:Upgrading T450s w7 to w10

1) The T450s sold with windows10, did they have the Lenovo features? Most of ThinkVantage applications were discontinued after Win7, as newer Windows versions have many build in features, which make additional applications unnecessary. Pre-installed Win10 Pro came with additional theme, some logos, (sometimes) power plan and four or five Lenovo apps (most of them are no longer developed).2) Is it possible in this case, to reinstall a recovery T450s in w10 on this laptop? If you made a copy of Windows 7 Pro recovery, then there's no problem to reinstall it again.

Hitting the power button 10 times then holding for a minute then booting6. Removing the RAM, draining the power, replacing the ram, then booting with no battery7. Unplugging and replugging the connector between the charger and the motherboard8. Putting the whole thing back together and letting it sit on the charger for an hour in the hope that all this stuff did something and now it just needs to charge. Everything I tried left me with the same result. 3 blinks of the power button when plugged in, and no other response to anything else. Is there any way of repairing this giant waste of money sitting on my desk? This Lenovo Forum thread has a reply form a Lenovo moderator that states that the T450s has 4GB memory soldered to systemboard and one 204-pin SO-DIMM socket, so on your system the SO-DIMM slot probably has a 4GB SO-DIMM installed.     From what he states, if you have a 5th generation  CPU you could go as high as 20GB if you added a single 16GB SO-DIMM, but they are a bit pricey.  Crucial 8GB DDR3L-1600 SODIMM  - $46.99- DDR3L PC3L-12800 ? Its not recommended to use the older, higher caps. Rather get used to the lower caps.

A:30-day Standby with Windows 10 - t450s

30-Day standby is completely broken on Win10.  There are actually 2 issues:

the 3-hour timer to go into Deep Sleep doesn't work - the reason is because Windows 10 sets it's own timers which conflicts with 30-day Standby
You might not be able to resume from Deep Sleep - due to a BIOS bug.  I don't have a fix date yet.

Based on your description, you are seeing both issues.  I recommend that you disable Intel Rapid Start Technology in BIOS, and move on.

Win10 hibernate/resume is actually pretty good, so I recommend setting up OS timer to go to hibernate after 3 hours (which will give you the same effect as 30-day standby, but without taking up space for a special hibernation partition on your SSD).  The reason why 30-Day standby existed was because hibernate/resume in Win7 and Win8 was too slow. MS improved it in Win8.1 and Win10 is a lot better.

Hi,I have ThinkPad T450s.I usually use it with its power cord plugged in.When I'm done working, I close the lid, take out the power cord, and make sure it's asleep (the red lamp is slowly blinking). Alternatively, I choose sleep from the Win10 menu. When I take it out of my bag after a few hours, it's very hot and the battery is almost empty. Why does it happen? Is there a way to keep it asleep?I'd really appreciate your help.Anna

Got my T450s just two days ago and have the following issues with sleep mode:  1. Fn + F4 does not activate sleep mode2. Manually selecting sleep mode from Start --> Power results in one of following:EITHER unable to wake from sleep mode. Pressing keyboard keys (incl Fn), using pointer, etc. none of these will work. Must execute hard shut down and re-start using power key in order to use the laptop. I know it is in sleep mode because the Thinkpad "i" blinks slowly and screen is darkOR computer screen is black, but Thinkpad "i" is fully lit (implying it isn't in sleep mode) however the computer doesn't react to any typing or Fn to bring it out of sleep mode Anyone else having these or similar issues? Please advise of any solutions. Have latest Windows 10 update and BIOS. Have fingerprint reader functionality but am not using it.  This is my first Lenovo laptop, bought it for work and many of my coworkers were interested to hear what I think about the product. Don't think I could recommend it to them in all honesty at this point....

I just wanted to post a problem I had with my T450s, and the way I solved the issue. I couldn't find a solution online, so I am going to share how I fixed it, in case somebody else has this issue. PROBLEM:I had let the battery run all the way down, and when I connected the AC charger next, the laptop would not power on. The power button would blink green 3 times when I connected the charger, but pressing it down would not turn on the machine. I tried holding down the power button for 30 seconds, tried turning it on with and without the external battery. Nothing worked. SOLUTION:I figured that a battery pull would fix the issue, but pulling the external battery was not enough. The internal battery must also be disconnected. This process is laid out in the following video explaining how to replace the backup battery: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CJtH5S7RURo You do not need to replace the backup battery itself, just open the computer, unplug as directed, and then plug it right back in. My computer powered on immediately. I needed to reset the Date/Time in the BIOS, and then it booted up just fine Side note: I called Lenovo techinal support, and after describing the problem, they immediately decided to send me a box to ship the laptop to them for repairs. This was a fairly simple fix, once you know what you need to do. I would think that support should have known this solution (as I have seen many users encounter this problem) and be able to walk you t... Read more

Hello and welcome,

Thanks for posting the fix (and problem).

Did you try the emergency reset hole on the bottom of the laptop after removing the rear battery and AC power before resorting to the internal battery disconnect?

Good evening everyone,My T450s: 20BWS0XY00 / PC03W7VQI ordered an illuminated keyboard FRU 04X0112 for my T450sand received a FRU 04X0150 that looks the same.Without mounting it I manipulated some keys, and there is horror; The keys do not go vertically when pressed, but tilt back, which is not comparable to the original unlit.Having not been mounted, I asked for a return but the seller replied that it's the same ... but no it's not the same. Can someone help me see things more clearly?

I donno wats wrong but since today morning it shows that in the D drive I have only about 7 GBs of space. I was surprised how it could have filled up overnight (it had about 60 GBs free). Laptop runs Win 7 64 bit. The last 'system change' I remeber doing was running the 'hardware scan' from Lenovo that pops up occasionally - but this was yesterday around afternoon.  Is this an indication of the SSD going to die ? I have taken a full backup. I did a diagnostic using the ThinkPad software that has been installed at factory but it showed no signs of hard drive failure. And I checked with Windows system restore too - that has been disabled long time back.

i recently purchased a thinkpad t450s to replace a thinkpad that had been provided my my previous employer.  on the prior thinkpad (i do not recall the model), pressing F8 turned wifi on or off. this was convenient for traveling or to extend battery life. the previous thinkpad ran windows 7. my t450s has the same picture on the F8 key - it looks like a radio tower with a line through it. but it does not seem to affect wifi. instead, it pops open the "action center."  this thinkpad is running windows 10. in general, i expected a single button to turn wifi on/off easily. i'd actually prefer to keep it off most of the time, since i work at home and connect via a cat5 ethernet cable.  right now, i have to dig into settings to turn wifi on or off. did lenovo change the behavior of F8?did windows 10 hijack thinkpad function keys?am i doing something wrong?is there a way to remap the function keys to make them (at least F8) work the way i want them to?

Solved!

When the action center pops up, theres an icon bottom right that you can set what the Fn key does.  Select alternate between blah blah blah . Hope that helps.

My T450s suddenly shutdown, with no warning!  I was not doing anything heavy, just some coding, and was plugged in to AC with batteries attached and with charge. This same sudden shutdown has happened to me before, a few months back. Since then, I have done a clean install of Windows 10 /w Creators Update. Latest BIOS etc. installed. Wondering if anyone else has encountered this issue? This seems to be an extremely rare occurance - I use this machine every day - although I suspect that this is a hardware/firmware problem. (The only hardware I've replaced from factory condition was the 2.5" hard drive, changed to a Samsung EVO SSD.)

How can I order a replacement for certain keys in a Thinkpad T450s? Only a few keys from my keyboard have become loose and I don't need to fully replace the keyboard but just a few keys. I can only find parts for the whole keyboard.

A:Replacement for certain keys in T450s

This site will sell you the individual keys   http://www.replacementlaptopkeys.com/  and for pretty cheap.    They do not list the T450s specifically, but I bet they have the right keys if you check with them.http://www.replacementlaptopkeys.com/contact-us/ Good Luck,

Hi,I bought about one year ago a T450s withouth the WWAN option. I was actually interrested in knowing whether I could upgrade it by buying the WWAN card. The reason why I am not sure is that I tried to open the SIM slot, but I could. I tried to use a paper clip to open it, but still no result. So, do T450s without the WWAN option have the slot installed? My product number is 20BXCTO1WW.Thanks

It's a little over a year old and this died on me already.

Dear Lenovo forums,We have during the last few months experienced some issues with the display of the Lenovo T450s PC. The issue concerns that the display stops updating while the user is typing or watching a video, but "resumes" displaying "live" whenever the mouse is touched. We've tried updating different drivers (power management, display drivers, onscreen display, etc.) but without any luck. The issue is not easily re-created, and can occur at any time - no specific moment or occasion. Below is a summarize of our observations:- Can sometimes be resolved by plugin in a power supply.- Can sometimes be resolved by closing down a few applications.- Can sometimes be activated by visiting dr.dk in IE- Only the T450s - the x250 or T460s has no problem- Not able to determine if it is a certain model of the T450s As you can see, we have no clear idea of what causes the issue, but are in dire need for a fix as this is driving our users mad.

I purchased my Thinkpad 450S directly from Lenovo website and received it on January 4, 2016.  Two weeks later it totally crashed and would not even start up in safe mode.  Received a USB recovery device.  Started to recover and then crashed.  Could not get it to work.  Called support and they sent a box out for me to send it back for repairs.  Now a part is on back order.  Here's my question.  Why don't they just send me a new one since obviously I received a defective one and be done with it?  I own my own business and this is killing me right now.  My HP laptop is barely holding on.  This is the busiest time of year for me and I am running out of patience.  Has anyone ever had this type of experience?  Who do I need to talk to at Lenovo to get this resolved?  The support personnel can only do so much and I am not really upset with them.  I am thinking I should have gone back to HP.  Feeling frustrated.

My new t450s has worked perfectly so far, except for one occasional, and very frustrating, hitch. At times, usually when I just turn on the laptop after having shut it down, the monitor of my laptop will begin flickering. This flickering is like horizontal lines flashing across the screen and distorting the image. After a short time of this, the screen will usually black out and what looks like a barcode will appear on the screen so that anything I was working on will not be visible. I have found that I can temporarily fix this by wiggling the screen (but then the flickering returns soon after) or be restarting the laptop (which gives me about a day of smooth running but time after time the flickering has returned eventually). Does anybody have a similar issue? Any way I can fix this without mailing the laptop in? I leave for school in a few weeks and I would prefer to have my laptop going in. Thanks for any help
