T450s - Can't get system to boot from new M.2

Q: T450s - Can't get system to boot from new M.2

UPDATE: Finally finally managed to change boot order... still refuses to boot from new M.2 unless I use the F12 boot menu.I even excluded the old one from the boot menu... now it just launches into repair mode. Why will it boot from the new M.2 (which is now the C drive) just fine with the F12, but not just by turning it on?I've installed a new 256 M.2. The system insists on booting off the old 16BG drive (which had Win10 pre-installed), even though I've made the new one the C drive. The old one is now E, and unless I used the F12 boot menu, it always boots from the 16 GB M.2.I migrated Win10, and it will boot fine... if I use the boot menu. BUT... I've changed the 16 GB drive to E:, and the new one to C. Why, why, why does it keep insisting on booting from the now E: drive? I even deleted files off it, now it just gets errors and I have to use the F12 boot menu every time to boot from the C: drive.I've searched for hours... and hours... for a way to change the boot order. But Lenovo seems to have (malevelontly, because they hate me) removed that menu from the BIOS. How the heck do I change this? Please?

I recommend downloading and running DRP. It's a recovery tool that has been proven to recover files that most other programs have no luck with. I've even recovered files from freshly formatted or partitioned drives.

You can download it direct from this link http://goo.gl/v51TwD. (This link will automatically start a download of DRP that you can save to your computer.)

So it looks like I got a lemon of a T450s. Since day 1 it has been nothing but trouble. Operating systems don't easily install (crash at different points during the install), all applications and system utilities keep on crashing, it reboots randomly etc. There is much whaling and gnashing of teeth.  To me it seems like a bad memory issue, but memtest shows up nothing after running for 48 hours, and all the Lenovo diagnostic tests run successfully. I've changed the hard drive twice, and removed the additional 4GB RAM that is not soldered to the board. I am guessing the issue is with th RAM that is soldered to the board.  The unit was bought in the US, where I am not, and apparently I don't have IWS, even though I bought the extended 3 year warranty.  As a next step, I am going to replace the system board myself. The model is 20BX-CTO1WW and from what I gather the system board I need is part# 00HT736.  Finally to my question: I was wondering if someone could tell me if I have any other system board options for this model type, as I may be interested in upgrading the CPU while I am at it.

Hello, My T540s (which just ran out of warranty ...) has a very weird issue : When I try to boot (clicking the power button), the fan starts turning, the keyboard's backlight turns on, but ... a second later (even before the Thinkpad logo shows up), the whole computer crashes and shuts down !Where it gets even more special is that from time to time (1 out of 1000) the computer boots normally, although giving me this warning :Secure Flash Authentification FailedCapsule Data is invalid_ I'm kind of lost right now, really don't know how to get that fixed. My friends think that my motherboard needs to be changed, but I really want to be sure before buying a new one (very expensive). I suspect a bug in the BIOS (recent update failed ?) ... What do you think ? Does anyone have or had the same problem ? Thanks for helping, Best, Sylvain E.K.  PS: Running Win7 64bit

A:T450s random crashes on boot

One possibility: damaged USB port.  This was known to happen on some older T-series laptops.  Bent USB port pins would short power, causing the quick shutdown.

It's not likely in your case (would be 1000 failures out of 1000...) but worth a quick check.

Hi, I have a user at my company the let's her T450's battery rundown to empy... (She leaves it in sleep mode over the weekend and the battery dies) This happend a while back and I had to leave the laptop on charge all day, unplug the battery, hit the reset button on the back and then plug everything back in for it to start up again.   Today, this issue happend again where the user ran the battery down to 0% and now the laptop will not boot up at all.  I tried the following things noted below but all the laptop does is display three quick power button flashes when I plug the power cable into it.   *Uplug the power cable and the battery.  Hit the reset button on the back and then tried to power it on - Nothing*Uplug the power cable and the battery.  Hold the power button down for 30 seconds and then tried to pwer it on - Nothing Going to leave it sit for a while but I do not think this is normal when someone runs the batter down to 0%.   Has this happened to anyone else or is this laptop dead and I will need to send it in for service?  Would like some thoughts on this...  Thanks!

Hi,I noticed recently that after booting up my T450s with Windows 10 64-bit, the process "SynapticsWinbio Synchronization Service (CMN)" will consume ~30% of CPU utilisation. I checked that this is the Windows service "BiometricSensorDataSynchronization" which runs executable "valWbioSyncSvc.exe", and is part of the Validity Fingerprint Common Driver 4.5.507. I downloaded the latest driver from Lenovo (which is also 4.5.507) and reinstalled it, but the problem persisted. I did found that restarting the process (via Services MMC) after killing it will stop the high CPU utilisation. But this is just a workaround, since this needs to be done after every boot up. Has anyone faced this problem and know the solution?Would appreciate any advice.

My year-and-a-half old T450s stopped booting up. Yesterday I was prompted for a Windows update and restarted the machine, as usual. After the update, I'm able to turn it on but it wont boot up. It shows the initial screen, with the "Lenovo" logo and won't proceed beyond.I tried taking out one battery and then holding the on/off button for 30 seconds, and also the emergency reset on the bottom, but neither changed anything. It simply won't go beyond the initial screen. Does anyone have any thoughts? Thanks in advance.

I think you are experiencing the same issue I have. If you notice after the Lenovo boot logo the display still stays on its just black, what it appears to be for me is a video failure after trying to update to windows 10 anniversary update. Try plugging in an external monitor and see if you get display, I did in my case.  Remove your hard drive and restart the PC, this should get the bios working again, go into your bios and disable secure boot so you can boot to a USB. Create a bootable USB 3.0 using a USB3.0 drive (formatted to NTFS) from Microsoft's site - https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows10/ Then goto repair my computer and choose rollback update, this will get you running again.  I have a p50 with Nvidia M1000M dedicated graphics, so I am still trying to figure out if this is a driver issue.

And what should I do to resolve it? Also, if the Driver can't be properly updated, what is its purpose for my system? Any form of help concerning this Driver update issue would be appreciated.

Hi all,
Windows 7 Pro 32bit
I have a captured image and I booted into PE on my target system. I used Diskpart:

select drive 1
clean
create partition primary
format quick fs=ntfs label="Win7 32bit"
assign letter="C"
exit

Then I applied the image with imagex:

imagex /apply e:\testimage.wim 1 c:\

The image applied, but now when I try to boot (After removing the PE boot disc), it tries to network boot and gives me the message "Operating System Not Found. I made sure to reset my boot order to HD>removable>CD>Network.
Do I need to manually create a small partition responsible for booting? What steps do I take from here? I was surprised that googling didn't lead me to my specific problem, but mostly problems involving SCCM and large scale deployments.

Thanks in advance,
Joe

A:I deployed an image and then tried to boot it, but the system tried to network boot instead and then gave me the message "Operating System Not Found"

In your diskpart, you need to add

act

To make partition active

After applying image, you need to create BCD environment with:

bcdboot C:\Windows

Note

Drive letter C: is whatever you used in command:

Imagex /apply e:\testimage.wim 1 c:\

If you would use two partition setup as suggested by other posters, then the small 100 MB partition would be C: and the "Windows" partition would be "D:". Hence, you would use

bcdboot D:\Windows

I've got a 100 gig hard drive divided into a primary C partition and a second logical partition (E drive). (I also have a separate hard drive, which is D, which I use for backups). This is a dual boot system - the C drive has Windows ME on it, which I don't use anymore, and the E drive has Windows XP Pro.

I'm wanting to find out if I can turn this dual boot system into a single boot system, so that I just have Windows XP on my system. Windows XP is now on the E partition. I'd like to avoid having to reinstall the XP operating system and having to re-install all my applications, etc. Is there a way to simplify this process of going from an ME/XP dual boot setup to an XP setup? Is there some automatic way to use so that XP and the applications on E will now migrate to C?

I'd appreciate tips and suggestions on how to accomplish this. I have Partition Magic, so I can use that if it's helpful. Thanks very much. Please feel free to e-mail directly: [email protected]

According to this website: http://www.pugetsystems.com/labs/articles/Overview-of-M-2-SSDs-586/m.2 slot comes in different flavors (SATA III, PCI-E 2.0 x2, PCI-E 2.0 x4 and PCI-E 3.0 x4) I would like to know what is the supported protocols for the T450s laptop. I'm asking this questions becauce I would like to buy a m.2 SSD disk to replace the "too small" 16GB that I have and I would like to know if it's worthwhile buying the Samsung SM951 that supports PCI-E 3.0 x4. Thank you.

A:T450s m.2 SSD

Good day and welcome to the community.

Apologies that I can't answer the SATA vs PCI-E portion of your question with any certainty. I can say, though, that the SM951 won't fit physically in your machine. That SSD is a 22x80mm form factor (2280) while your machine takes the 22x42 form factor (2242).

Please have a look at your hardware manual:
http://download.lenovo.com/pccbbs/mobiles_pdf/t450s_hmm_en_sp40g54937.pdf
where manual page 66 describes removal / installation.

Then, have a look at the FRU BOM:
http://download.lenovo.com/parts/ThinkPad/t450s_frubom_20150126.pdf
and on the last page you'll see the only factory part listed is the 16GB M.2 2242 SSD normally used for caching (I believe).

You should still be able to install a higher capacity 2242 M.2 SSD in that slot, though. The largest M.2 2242 SSD I've seen is also 256GB, but I haven't searched exhaustively.

Hope this helps a bit.
Regards.

I have a T450S laptop. It came with 8 GB of RAM (4 on the board and 4 GB SO-DIMM). I replaced the SO-DIMM with a Crucial 16GB one. When I look at the system information, it indicates that I have all 20 GB of RAM available. I recently asked the computer to do a relatively big, but not that big, processing job that took a long time (14 minutes). While it was crunching, I checked the resource monitor and it indicated that only 3.9 GB of the RAM were being used and that  ~16GB were available - but the extra 16 wasn't being used, just sitting there being available. When the processing completed, the resource monitor still says that 3.5 GB are being used with "regular" computing - so basically, nothing was different with the big job compared to just ordinary tasks. How do I make the computer use all of the memory that it has? I've looked all over for some sort of setting.?

As for the function keys, press FN + Esc once to activate FN Lock and switch the FN functions. The TrackPoint sits indeed lower, in order to protect the screen (as on older ThinkPads, the TrackPoint would often touch the screen when the lid was closed). Its not recommended to use the older, higher caps. Rather get used to the lower caps.

Unplugging and replugging the connector between the charger and the motherboard8. Putting the whole thing back together and letting it sit on the charger for an hour in the hope that all this stuff did something and now it just needs to charge. Everything I tried left me with the same result. 3 blinks of the power button when plugged in, and no other response to anything else. Is there any way of repairing this giant waste of money sitting on my desk? Hello,
I am experiencing cpu/coil whine issue in my brand new T450s. Any ideas? I read the issue is caused by low quality capacitors on the motherboard. Does anyone else experience this issue on the new T450s? Should I contact the Repair center? Pre-installed Win10 Pro came with additional theme, some logos, (sometimes) power plan and four or five Lenovo apps (most of them are no longer developed).2) Is it possible in this case, to reinstall a recovery T450s in w10 on this laptop? If you made a copy of Windows 7 Pro recovery, then there's no problem to reinstall it again.

This Lenovo Forum thread has a reply form a Lenovo moderator that states that the T450s has 4GB memory soldered to systemboard and one 204-pin SO-DIMM socket, so on your system the SO-DIMM slot probably has a 4GB SO-DIMM installed.     From what he states, if you have a 5th generation  CPU you could go as high as 20GB if you added a single 16GB SO-DIMM, but they are a bit pricey.  Crucial 8GB DDR3L-1600 SODIMM  - $46.99- DDR3L PC3L-12800 ? This must be one you guys have heard before, however i think mines a little differernt.

Ok i boot my comp and just before loading screen it comes up with
Windows ould not start becuase the following file is missing or corrupt:
\Windows\System32\Config\System

Now, i have found what microsoft says to do, which is to put a windows CD in and press r, to go to the command promt screen in order to put in a whole lot of code. Fair enough i say, looks easy enough.

One problem though, i put my windows disk in, i press r. At this stage the instructions say the black screen should first ask me for a password to log in as admin however mine doesn't. I then go to type in the first bit of code the microsoft instructions tell me to type which is MD TMP i then get a message saying access denied! i type help, see a list of commands and found the logon command, so i tried that except it doesnt give me a list of admins where i should then be able to type in the password and log on in order to be able to type the code which microsoft has to me to type.

Any help would be greatly appreciated! i really cbf formating my hardrive.

btw running windows XP SP2. Comp is P4, 1gig ram. fx5700 graphics card.

A:No boot, File missing or corrupt: windows\system\config\system

Went through the same thing with my older computer (HP Pavilion 502n/WinXP Home). Nearly brand new when it was given to me by a friend, three years ago, who forgot to give the Windows recovery disk. Then in mid August, it pulled a similar stunt as yours.

At First it was blackscreen with "Windows not shutdown completely and options to go into "safemode" or normally. That lasted a couple of times when it suddenly would not complete the boot up and got a similar message as you did.

Took it to a computer tech, who found a BIOS glitch and thought he had fixed it.

Then three weeks later, in early September, it did it again. Would not boot up completely several times. Then it finally did....after going online for a while, it started crashing and restarting every 20 minutes. Eventually it finally did boot up to show something else on a blue screen with a list of checking files systems on C: with this:

At fourth bootup, it finally reached screen with F keys and I hit them to go into Safemode and HP system recovery (non destructive file mode).

Hi, I'd like to see if somebody have any idea of what's happening to my sistem: a Medion M3 Composer with Mobo: MSI Ms-7046 socket 775, P4 3.0HT, DDR-SDRAM.
It has been working flawless for about a year, two days ago, I go boot it, and the WinXP splash sceen got frozen. I powered off the PC and powered on again...Single long beep, that repeats regurarly and no video...no boot.

I tried to reset the CMOS by removing the battery. When I powered the PC back on, it shut off immediately and by itself re-powered on after 2-3 seconds doing the same long beep, no boot, no video.

I tried all kinds, removed, all devices, tried one by one the RAMs, installed another CPU, etc. all with no success.

I tried anothe MoBo, but didn't finish booting (!)...it shut off by itself after a couple of BIOS screens...maybe this motherboard is not fully compatible with the system...or faulty PSU???

Unfortunately when I put the orignal MSI MoBo, and put power, I didn't got any self-suts off...but I smelled what I shouldn't have smelled!!!

ANY HELP, CLUE???

THANKS!

All started with this message

Warning! Invalid first FAT entry(=0x400)!

After running some tests
Took the disk out plugged on another computer all is there C(system reserved) D(actual windows install) E (data on it) run chkdsk no errors
After that decided to go with HDAT2(v5) run READ WRITE READ repair n recover bad sectors - found some at the start of the drive.
Tried to run with the windows 7 disk it gets stuck (guess system partition does not allow to go) so i thought that it could be the notebook VGA so i decided to go with LIVE ubuntu 12.04 disk to see if i get stuck as i did when i tried to run win 7 disk - everything go well(so VGA got ruled out) . Took few more test check ins etc.

So i decided to try and delete the system reserved(100mb) partition and try to rebuild it somehow so i am here can i get some clues on what to do next

Hi,
It has happened to me twice...I accidentally deleted a partition and later found out that my system is dead....The only way I recover out of that is I reinstall Windows and then install grub again to recover the Linux partition. But I feel the delete partition is a very rapid process just taking seconds and in that I don't think files would be deleted, so I feel potentially I can recover the deleted partitions including the boot partition. But I don't know how to do it. Also now when the boot partition is deleted and the system is not booting up what should be done to recover the system and data?
Thanks in advance,
-pkd

On both my Win7/Win8 Dual Boot machines I have now lost both my Advanced Boot Options and System Recovery Options on F8. I cannot boot F8 after BIOS post or after selecting either OS from the Metro-style Boot Menu.

I tried running Refresh just now on my deskstop but it didn't reinstall these Options. I still don't have the Recovery folder in C: on Win8 although it is there on Win7.

Can someone give me the way to link these to F8 hotkey? It's obviously not being used now.

A:Lost my F8 Advanced Boot & System Recovery Options on Dual Boot

Hello Greg,

Do you have Windows 8 set as the default OS to run at startup? If not, then you will see the boot screens that Windows 7 uses instead of the new Windows 8 ones.
You might see if you could use a different option to boot to the Startup Options Menu to get to the Advanced Boot Options screen.

I am having trouble getting a computer to boot. The computer I am having trouble with (it is my father in law's in TN, and I am in GA), is a Gateway. I found some information on fixing the problem on a Dell (I assume the bios is the same for both brands as it seems to be), but I cannot figure out how to get it to work.

The directions:

Reboot your system and hit F2 as soon as you see the Dell startup screen (the options are F2 for setup, F12 for boot sequence).

In the System Setup screen, do these steps.

Select Drives:
Make sure your Diskette Drive (3.5 floppy) is set properly (Usually set to Internal)
Make sure that "Drive 0: SATA-0" drive is set to "ON"

Go to "SATA Operation":

Your system proabaly came set to "RAID Autodetect / AHCI" - THIS SETTING CAUSES YOUR SYSTEM TO GO INTO AN IDE LOOP AND DOESN'T ALLOW IT TO FIND YOUR FACTORY INSTALLED SATA DRIVE.

CHANGE THE SATA OPERATION SETTING TO "COMBINATION"

Reboot - make sure that the boot sequence is set to CD rom before HD and make sure that the reinstall CD is in the drive. Setup will load, hit enter to reinstall XP. Your HD should now be detected and you should see the licensing agreement.

If you have your files backed up I reccommend deleting the partition and reformatting prior to installing XP, it will give you that option after the license agreement.

Once you have successfully reinstalled the OS, Dell reccommends that you ... Read more

Hey everyone.

So I've been having this issue where my computer won't boot up into the login screen for Win Xp. It simply posts, goes to the Windows loading screen, and just as it's suppose to display the users and login page, the screen just goes black. I can however get into safemode, but it simply won't boot on the regular startup.

I believe it's another system or boot file error that has malware as I've had a previous thread years ago with a similar issue, but need some assistance. Any thgouhts? What info can I get for you to take a peek? -Jeff
PS: I will post the event viewer as soon as I get home from work.

Hi,
I have a dual-boot system Ubuntu/Windows 7. The Master boot loader is GRUB.
It worked fine until yesterday when, for some reason, Windows 7 refused to load anymore. I tried to repair with chkdsk, found and repaired some disk errors, but now the boot loader is damaged. The problem I have is that after selecting Windows from the GRUB list I get the installed version entry but I can't have access to Repair through F8 and thus I am not able to continue on the installation DVD. The problem I think would be simple, by writing a new boot using bootrec, but I don't have access to the console.
I've seen a solution/tutorial on this forum except that it requires to remove Linux, which is not at all my scope.
Thanks

A:Recover Windows 7 boot on dual boot system with GRUB masterboot

   Information
Boot up using the Startup Repair CD or Windows 7 DVD. (not the OEM manufacturer's Recovery Disk) If you have a Netbook, you will need a CD/DVD drive.

NOTE: Make sure no USB drives are plugged in.
Do not use a USB Pendrive for Startup Repair.

1) Use the Rebuild BCD in this tutorial:
How to use the Bootrec.exe tool in the Windows Recovery Environment to troubleshoot and repair startup issues in Windows

2) Fix MBR.

NOTE: As you have Linux installed, the above only works for 1 in 1000, must likely you will need to reinstall.
Good luck.

This question is concerning the disc that Windows 7 users can make by going to Backup and Restore > Create a System Repair Disc and then burning the disc.
Windows says this disc can be used to boot the computer. However, you won't necessarily be able to boot your Windows 7 OS from the hard drive. When I had a problem recently (shut down system and when restarted I got a DOS message that said "Boot MGR missing") this disc did nothing in an attempt to make a repair. From the System Recovery Menu you see here when you boot the CD:
http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/what-are-system-recovery-options#what-are-system-recovery...
I selected "Startup Repair" and it couldn't fix anything. I ended up cloning my hard drive from a backup.

From http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/startup-repair-faq#1TC=windows-7"Are there problems that Startup Repair can't fix?
Startup Repair can only fix certain problems, such as missing or damaged system files. It can't fix hardware failures, such as a failing hard disk or incompatible memory, nor does it protect against virus attacks.
Startup Repair isn't designed to fix Windows installation problems, nor is it a backup tool, so it can't help you recover personal files, such as photos or documents. To help protect your computer, back up your system and files regularly. For more information, search for "backup" in Windows Help and Support."
So here's my question: How do you create a bootable CD that has everything you need... Read more

Hi guys
in my desktop I have two hard disks ( disk 0 and disk 1 ) . Disk 1 is a clone of disk 0 created by Macrium Reflect
Disk 0 : ( C: ) windows 10 pro , upgrade from windows 7 , ( E: ) windows 8.1 pro , ( G: ) Storage partition
Disk 1 : clone of disk 0
problem description : I see in msconfig / boot a wrong listing
windows 10 ( C:\WINDOWS) : Current OS ; Default OS
windows 8.1 pro ( H:\WINDOWS ) instead of ( E:\WINDOWS )
nevertheless the dual booting works fine as well as the shift between the disks via BIOS.
The question is , could I fix the situation using the EasyBCD of Neosmart Technologies to edit the bootloader ?
I see can change drive letter H: to E: and save the change , am I right or wrong ?
or any other way
any help appreciated , thanks .

from first post in xp:
Hello all...new user here
When I click on System Information (System Tools>System Information) nothing happens. I get a very quick hour glass and then nothing. When I Run msconfig, the window for system.ini and boot.ini is empty as well. A third problem is when I tried to install Nero 7, I recieved an error saying: "Unable to access shell manager"
This is what I've done so far/other info:
1. Ran System Restore to about a week ago (didn't have the problem then)
2. Ran "search and destroy" and all is good there
3. I've had problem with Media Player 10. Windows Update wants me to install a security update. After I install it, I get a problem running video. At that point, the computer gives me a link to install the latest version of media player 10 (which I do) and works fine until Windows Update asks me to install the very same security update. If I install the update, the problem starts all over again.
Any help, greatly appreciated.
Thanks!

I have a dual boot system (2 hard drives) booting Suse and XP and boot up through Suse's built in boot manager which gives me the option of booting to Windows or Linux.

But since I barely ever use Linux I want to delete it off the 2nd drive so I can use it for a storage drive, so I'm wondering how to replace the Windows Master Boot Record so I can just boot into my XP drive. I'm scared that once I delete/reformat the contents of the 2nd hard drive (I'll probably use Partition Magic to do this through my XP drive) that I won't be able to boot XP up anymore. So before I do anything I want to just be able to boot into XP and bypass the linux drive before I delete it to make sure everything is ok.

Can anyone help me out with this?

Thanks.

A:Want to replace Master Boot Record on dual boot system & delete Linux drive

Yeah, if you toast linux then it won't boot up. I had that problem when I used Fedora and got rid of it. Boot from your XP disk and go to the repair console. You can use commands in there to make a new mbr. I can remember the exact command. I think you can type help and that will give you a list of available commands. I think it is "fixboot" or "fixmbr" but I can't remember the exact command.

I just got it today, after everything was set up, I started to use it. Soon after that a message bumped out and told me tthat there're important updates, and I chose to update them. Then the laptop shut down automatically, it made a sound after the screen became black and it can't turn on anyway. I tried press the power button, it made 5 short sounds and didn't have any other reactions. The green light and the red light on the "i" of Thinkpad keep flashing in a low frequency. The only thing I have downloaded to this new laptopThe only thing I have downloaded on this new laptop was google chrome. I own a late 2015 Thinkpad t450s. It was fine for a long time but since few months cursor is drifting most of the time and Trackpoint stops working for a few seconds to minutes on it's own. What I have done till now: * Backed up and re-installed older version of Windows. * Tested on safe mode * Cleaned Trackpoint from dusts etc. I also used mouse and not the trackpoint but it still does that. I cannot stand to this behaviour of  the cursor anymore. Any solutions/ideas?
