Windows Media Player wont open automatically

Q: Windows Media Player wont open automatically

Whenever I want to view a movie clip (for ex. the current one i was looking at was .mpg) I have to save it to my computer first. I have to open windows media player and find the saved file and then open. How do I make Windows Media player open automatically whenever i choose to download a clip? i would like it to automatically download, open, and play when I click on "download to view".

Thanks for your help.

Preferred Solution: Windows Media Player wont open automatically

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

A: Windows Media Player wont open automatically

Welcome to TSG.

Would you mind linking the one you are having problems with? Maybe it is set up only for download and not set up to view.

It is possible your Media Player isn’t set as the default viewer for a .mpg file. Find a .mpg file on your computer and select it. If the Media Player doesn’t open and play it you have to associate it.

Highlight a .mpg file. Hold the Shift key while you right click on it. Select “Open With”. Check the box that says to always use this program etc and then navigate to your media player. Once you open the .mpg file this way it should always open the Windows Media Player when you select one.

Hello Group,

Working on a touch screen video exhibit, learning as I go, so please excuse the basic level of my questions.

Developed a front end in html to activate the videos selected by touch, and it works fine.

During this testing phase, I am just using Windows Media Player with the touch screen as a secondary monitor. Looked through the options and could not find a way to turn off the player after the video has ended - have to manually X it out to go back to my front end. The language is French, so maybe I didn't understand the right option to use.

Still unable to play a dvd video on the secondary monitor, but mpg works fine.

Thanks for looking in.

Hi there,

I've had this problem ever since I got my Compaq Presario S3300NX. Occasionally, during playback of movies on windows media player 10 (and 9), my computer will shutdown (as if the power cord has been pulled) and restart again. I have an NVidia graphics card if that helps any (if you need specifics, i'll need direction as to where to find them). I know for sure that I dont' have any viruses or spyware because I've just reformatted my hard drive.

As I said before, this occurs very infrequently, so its very difficult for me to know if the problem is fixed or not. However, recently (within the past month) its been happening more often (about 2 or 3 times a week).

Thanks in advance for any thoughts on the matter.

A:Windows Media Player Automatically Reboots

The first things I would look for are heat problems and corrupted drivers.

First, make sure your fans are running and clear of dust, especially those in the power supply and the one on the processor. Overheating can cause shutdown problems like this (so can a bad power supply). Overheating can damage your processor as well.

Second:

Look in your device manager for any red or yellow warning icons in any of the devices listed, especially the graphics adapter.

I recently reformatted my hard drive and upgraded to Windows XP. I'm now having problems with Windows Media Player. I've upgraded it to v9 as I thought that may be the problem, but this has not helped.

When ever I try and open and play media (movies I have or even the sample stuff that comes with Media Player), WMP automatically closes with no error message at all.

Can someone tell me why this does this and how to fix the problem?

Thanks,
JRHT

A:(Resolved) Windows Media Player closes automatically

The problem only occurs when I load media, not when I open WMP. My guess is a dodgy codec. I'll try and see if that's the problem.

I recently reformatted my hard drive for my Windows 7 computer. I made a backup of everything as reccommended. When it restarted I moved everything back to where it came from, including all my music back into the music folder. However, when I run Windows
Media Player, it will not automatically add my music into the Library, it will only add it if I play it. Even wiht it added, when i try to make a playlist It gives me an error message, saying "Windows Media Player encountered a problem while creating
or saving the playlist." I have looked on the forums to find a solution, tried all the ones that worked for others but to no avail. Is there anything I can do to fix this problem?

A:Windows Media Player won't rebuild or update automatically

Ok so all the libraries have their respective folder as a location and as the default save location. I restored the defaults in the music library. It create playlists fine now, but still wont update automatically, so do I just have to  play
each song to add it to my library?
I suggest that you try resetting the media library. First note that resetting the library will make you lose all current play counts, and possibly ratings too. Then, follow these steps:
- Reboot the PC.
- Go to Start, type services.msc in the Search field, and press Enter. In Services, find the
Windows Media Player Network Sharing Service. If its status is
Started, double-click the service and click
Stop.
- Go to Start, type %LOCALAPPDATA%\Microsoft in the Search field, and press Enter. This folder will open up in Windows Explorer.
- In this folder, delete the Media Player folder. If you can't see the folder, then it's probably hidden. Set Explorer to show hidden files and folders, and to show protected system files.
- Start WMP, your library will have been reset and will be rebuilt. Check if the issue still occurs.

Hello,

I am currently using Windows Media Player 11 and I am having issues with album information not displaying after I download music from amazon.com and after I rip a CD, it only shows the song title. I have to go through each song and select Find album information to get it. Another problem is that the music time does not display.

I've tried deleting my temporary internet files, deleting the WMP database from the Media Player folder from Start > run. I also resetting options from the Library and Privacy tab, and also resetting Internet Explorer settings from the control panel, and rebooting my machine.

I've been having this problem for several weeks now and I can't seem to figure out why . Can you help me? My OS is Windows XP and sometimes I connect to the internet through VPN and off VPN. My ISP is ATT.
Thanks,

This has been bothering me for quite a while, but the best way to solve any situation is with patience. My basic problem is that i don't like how when i choose to download a video or music file from a website, it automatically opens windows media player. I'd like to get the prompt to open or save the file, in which case i'd choose to save the file. So i've been digging through IE menus for this and nothing seems to work. Is there a way to make IE save everyfile and never open windows media player?

A:How to stop Windows Media Player 11 from Automatically Opening in IE7

Hello and Welcome to TSF

Does this also happen when you right click and select "Save Target As"?

Try setting IE7 settings back to default

# In Internet Explorer 7, go to Tools > Internet Options. Click the Advanced tab. (If your IE7 browser won't even open without crashing, you can also right-click on your IE7 desktop icon and select Properties and then click the Advanced tab.)
# Click the Reset... button near the bottom. A window will appear explaining to you what restoring your settings will do to your browser. For example, your favorite bookmarks will not be erased. Your add-ons will be disable and your temporary internet files and cookies will get erased. Most users will not notice these items are gone or can easily re-enable them later. So if your browser is unstable, we recommend that you reset your browser settings.
# Click Reset.
# You will be prompted to close and reopen your browser.

Hi everyone

Ok WMP wont play any .wma files. when I try to open one I get WMP has encountered an error and has to close. I get the same error when I try to sync both of my mp3 players (they play wma files) and any program that checks WMP. I can play all other formats (mp3 mpg avi wav jpg), but if I try to play any .wma file i get the same crash error no matter what program it is. Can't pinpoint when this happened because I only found it out after I tryed to sync my juke phone (was fine first time but dosen't work any more). I've added a few programs since then but uninstalled all of them and same problem. Only thing thats still there that is updated is SP3. Reverted back to WMP 9 but still same problem. Ok I think thats all

I had a computer school burn some video clips on a CD for me.
It autoloads and plays fine on my workplace computer.
My own computer has Win 2000 and I installed Windows Media Player 9,
which seemed to go smoothly.
When I put the CD in, it wont autoload.
If I click on Run, I get a message "Insert disk"
If I click on the the icon for WMP, the screen comes ok, but nothing happens if I click Play
The notation says Battery Randomization.
I tried a different CD with some digital camera video clips, that I know plays on
another computer. When I click Run, WMP goes through the motions of playing the
video, but all I see is a swirling light splotch instead of the clip.
Is there an installation step I missed?

Hello and Welcome to TSF

Try using the Windows Installer CleanUp Utility. As long as you installed the application using the Windows Installer, this utility will remove all the folders, files, registry keys, and entries from your system and allow you to start over with a clean slate.

Download the Windows Installer CleanUp Utility
Locate and run msicuu2.exe to install the Windows Installer CleanUp Utility.
Locate and launch the Windows Installer CleanUp Utility on the Start menu.
From the Windows Installer CleanUp Utility window, locate the application in the list and click the Remove button.
Once the application has been removed, click the Exit button to close the utility.

Now try to reinstall the application

Hello Jason,

Windows Media Player can play some AVI files and not others because they can be encoded with different codecs (WMV8, WMV9 etc.). If you install the K-Lite Codec Pack then you'll be able to play 99.9% of video formats in Windows Media Player.

K-Lite Codec Pack

1. Go to: Free-Codecs.com :: Download K-Lite Mega Codec Pack 7.2.0 : The K-Lite Mega Codec Pack includes the K-Lite Codec Pack Full, QuickTime Alternative, Real Alternative support and Monkey's Audio DirectShow decoder.
2. Scroll down to find the link that will "Download [ K-Lite Mega Codec Pack X.X.X ]" where the X.X.X will be the version number
***If the link doesn't work then choose one of the links with "MIRROR" written next to it***
3. Click on it and save the file to your documents
4. When it finishes downloading, find the file and run it

Now we have to install the program:

1. Click Next
2. Check "Advanced Install" and click Next
3. Click Next
4. On the drop down menu, select "Profile 8: Lots of stuff (without player)" and click Next
5. Click Next
6. Click Next
7. Check the "Windows Media Player" box and click Next
8. Check both of the boxes:
-"Video file extensions:"
-"Audio file extensions:"
and click Next
9. Click "Select All" and click Next
10. Click Next
11. Click Install

I dont know how it happened. I was listening to some music on it, when my computer suddenly froze for an unknown reason. When i restarted my computer, i found that my media player didnt work anymore. i click on it and it pops up, but nothing appears in the main menu thingy. then, i hear a 4-click sound coming from my cpu. when i try to click out of the program, it takes forever, then says "program not responding, etc.". I click "End Now" and wait several minutes for it to close. While this is happening, all my other programs work with ease, while windows media player does nothing but wait to close.

it does this every time i open it! please help me fix it!

Have 100's of oldies in there and can't get them to burn.
Have Windows XP Home.
Music was down loaded for disc I purchased over the years.
After I have selected a "Playlist" it starts to burn it then stops and says it cant finish process.
I tried several different free media programs and also have Nero Express.
Nothing worked.
Finally was told to try Itunes.
It would only transfer a 1/4 of the music. It burned a disc from that just fine so my hardware is working.
I think that Windows has protected the rest of the music that would not transfer.
How do I get around that?

What format are these files, mp3 or something else? Are you trying to burn a regular audio CD?

Try burning again with Nero, save the error log and post the log, but edit out the line with the Nero product key.

A:Windows Media Player Wont Burn?

Downloading music is illegal, but, purely educational purposes... You could import the music into an iTunes playlistand try burning it (the playlist) with iTunes. Or, maybe try using a different CD, perhaps that one is defective. If you don't have iTunes, you can download it for free from Apple's Website, it's a great media manager. http://www.apple.com/itunes/download/

Hello, WMP v11 & Itunes8 wont run. Will not start using desktop shortcut or from Start Menu, or programs list. Also after double clicking on a music files nothing happens. No error messages at all. I'm running XP- Pro sp3/ Kaspersky Internet Security 2009. Did check and nothing blocking these. Everything working one day then not the next.( i have a teenage daughter which might have some thing to do with it).Did a system restore ,still no good. If i insert a DVD or CD into drive and i select WM Player as player to open it does works fine. Also double clicking an optical drive with a cd in My Computer opens WMPlayer and plays fine. Only want to unistall both programs as last resort. I mainly use Gom Player to watch movies as it plays most media formats. I usually use WMPlayer for mp3/cd applications. My daughter uses itunes for ipod touch. Have tried a few things after googling but still no luck. I'm hoping some one out there has had a similar experience. Mark

A:Windows Media Player wont start.

Go to My Computer. Go to the C: drive, then navigate to C:\Program Files\Windows Media Player.
Are you able to run wmplayer.exe? If not, are you able to run mplayer2.exe?
If wmplayer.exe runs, go to tools (you may have to press alt to get the menu bar to show up), options. Go to the file types tab, and select the files you want to associate with WMP and click apply. Hopefully in the future when you double-click they'll start automatically. That is if you can get that far.

Help me please... When I'm in my pictures and click on a video clip, Windows Media Player will not open the clip. I can open the clip however, with other media players. If I'm looking at a series of pictures and clips, the clip will open with Windows Media Player when advancing or clicking FROM a picture...

If I reboot my computer, Windows Media Player will work until I power down for the day... Perplexing! Does anyone know what causes this??? Thanks; Bob

A:Windows Media Player will not open

Have you set WMP as the default media player? Open up the start menu and select Default Programs, then Set Your Default Programs, then select Windows Media Player, then select set as default.

A friend sent me a DVD from Australia ("Underbelly") and when I put it in my DVD it said Region Code Error. So, I put it in my laptop to see if it would work and clicked on Windows Media Player. Nothing happened. I tried everything -- I tried to run it an administrator but still absolutely nothing. What should I do?

Thanks.

(And, if WMP will work, will I be able to see the Australian DVD on my system?)

A:Windows Media Player won't open

You are in the pickle created by the cinematic industry who are trying to stamp out piracy. Being young and fairly stupid, the people who thought this idea up totally fail to grasp the implications of this sort of thing in a fully-connected world. They expect you to buy the DVD in your own localised version.

I suspect there are any amount of downloadable players capable of playing illegal DVDs, but this site has a policy of not advising on these things as far as I know, but you may get lucky.
