Windows Updates (7/12/2016): Unable to install. Need help please.

Q: Windows Updates (7/12/2016): Unable to install. Need help please.

Good morning everyone,

I am once again having to ask for help here because I've been unable to install the Patch Tuesday updates released July 12th. (I received the "Updates available" notification yesterday afternoon, July 13th). WU just keeps searching endlessly, and after 2 hours, I restarted the computer to stop the process. (It could not be stopped in Task Manager).

(All day yesterday, July 13th, my CPU kept hovering in the 50% - 60% usage range both off-line and on-line. The only way I could get it to return to normal was what I did in Item # 2 shown below).

Also, NO error codes are being seen either.

Things I have tried thus far:

1. Ran full scans, including for rootkits with my ESET Smart Security, MBAM Premier, and SAS programs. NO issues found.

2. Opened Control Panel > Windows Updates, and changed the existing setting (i.e. Notify me of updates, but let me decide to download and install) to "Never check for updates". I then restarted the computer.

3. Ran the sfc /scannow command. NO issues reported.

4. Ran the SURT tool. The dialog box opened indicating it was initializing and said something about looking for updates. When I checked the computer several hours later, the dialog box said something like, "Installation complete". I closed the box.
However, none of the 10 Important updates (in this month's updates) were installed when I checked the WU list of installed updates.

5. Ran the Microsoft Fix-it tool. NO issues found.

(In Control Panel > Windows Updates, it continues to show July 12th as the last time updates were checked for, and July 5th as the last time an update was installed).

I've pasted the SURT log below:

==================================

My appeal to the Community: Can someone please help me with step-by-step instructions on what I should do now? I have no idea where to go from here.

(Please forgive me...I'm really sorry, and frankly - ashamed, & humiliated to have to admit it, but age and health issues have taken such a toll, that I'm just not able to understand a lot of things that I once could with little effort).

Thank you for your time, review, and any help to resolve the problem I'm having!

Preferred Solution: Windows Updates (7/12/2016): Unable to install. Need help please.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Good evening everyone,

My issue is with today's 'Patch Tuesday' Windows Updates.

[System: Win7 Home Premium SP1 x64]. Computer is a standalone, not on any network, and used only by me.

Description of problem:

There were something like 14 - 16 important updates in today's batch. Most of them did NOT install. (Please see attached screenshots showing this + my current WU settings, at the bottom of this post).
NO error codes are being displayed. WU just keeps saying it is downloading updates. The 'download progress' remains at "0%" the entire time, however.

Resolutions attempted thus far:

1. Ran CCleaner, then tried to update again. No success.
2. Restarted computer 3 times, then attempted to update, without success.
3. UNCHECKED all updates except for 3, and tried updating just those 3.
Problem remains.
4. On the 3rd attempt, after waiting 15 minutes, I cancelled the download/installation.
5. Ran scans with ESET Smart Security (v9), MBAM Premier, and SAS. No issues were found.

My question: Is there an explanation for, & a resolution to, this problem?

The only potential explanation I could think of is the Windows Update servers are too busy???
(Don't recall having encountered this type of problem before).

Thank you for your for time and any help!

Recently received this notebook from my daughter and her fiance fro my birthday, and am greatly impressed. Wanted to download/install August 2016 Windows 10 upgrade, but "Settings" search said computer is up to date. Went on Microsoft site and downloaded update, but it will not install. I get a message that the program needs 20gb to install, and only 2gb are free. SSD is only 32gb to begin with. Is there a separate download for notebooks, or will I not be able to install update unless I uninstall programs?

Hi: When you have a situation like that, you can normally insert a 16 GB usb flash drive for windows to store temporary installation files. http://www.dell.com/support/article/us/en/04/SLN298780/EN?c=us&l=en&s=bsd&cs=04#Need-more-space

-Running Windows 7 Ultimate 64bit Service Pack 1

Hello there, I've just built a new computer and am having trouble installing Windows updates on my fresh install.

When I go to Windows Update, I get the following message:

--
Install new Windows Update software

To check for updates, you must first install an update for Windows Update. Your automatic updating settings will not change

To install the update, Windows update will automatically close and re-open.
--

When I click 'Install now', the window disappears and I am then confronted with the following message:

--
Windows could not search for new updates

An error occurred while checking for new updates for your computer.

Error(s) found:
Code 800F081F Windows Update encountered an unknown error.
--

Does anyone know how I can get updates to work? Is there some way that I can manually download and install this update for Windows Update?

Thank you.

A:Unable to install updates on fresh Windows 7 SP1 install

I'm guessing that your installation media already contained SP1, is that correct? Since this is a clean install my first thought is something happened during the installation process to damage or corrupt some system files. I'd try the Microsoft troubleshooter first.

Troubleshoot problems with installing updates - WindowsUpdate_dt000

If that doesn't work I'd try running the System Update Readiness Tool.

What is the System Update Readiness Tool?

If still no joy, and only because this is a very recent clean install, I'd just reinstall Windows 7 again. If the problem persists I'd start looking into the possibility of a bad installation disk, hardware issues, etc. Please post back if any of this helps or not.

My O/S Is Windows XP SP3 32Bit and Windows Automatic Updates set at "Notify me but don't download or install them"

The updates I am having problems with are for MS Office 2003 SP3 and they are as follows:

Security Updates: KB974554 - 925051 - 976382 - 981716 - 980923 - 2293428 - 980373 - 982122 - 947319 - 9453973

Updates: KB978551 - 907417

I tried using the MS Update website to manually install each one but still got "failed". I then noticed when I click on the update on the website it shows Download Size 0 kb Download 0 kb

Any answers please?

A:Unable to install updates on Windows XP

Go into Add Remove Programs and put a check box for Show Updates. Are these updates already installed?
The update history in Windows Update only includes updates installed via
Windows Update, not updates that are manually installed - this is the expected
behavior.

Seems like this is a common problem, but of course, there could be many reason why the issue is occurring and some of the basic things I've tried are not working.Windows XP Professional SP3 x86It's been probably 3 years since I had my old machine on and decided to virtualize it and get rid of the hardware. First thing I wanted to do is get it fully patched. When I go to download updates (I think there are 100+), it just shows a blank download screen. After 30 min or so, I get an error code: 0x80246008This led me to the BITS service being stopped with an event log error occurring:The Background Intelligent Transfer Service terminated with service-specific error 2147942414 (0x8007000E)When I try and start the service, I get:Windows could not start Background Intelligent Transfer Service . . . error code -2147024882I had an outdated virus software (AVG), so I downloaded Security Essentials and scanned. Found a few adware and removed. However, when I try and update that software, I get error code: 0x80240022I downloaded installed (and it did let me update) Malware Bytes and found more adware etc. Cleaned successfully.Still have the same issues with Windows updates. I'm guessing it has to do the the BITS service not being able to start. Some basic things I've done: turned firewall off temporarily, renamed software distribution folder, ran SP3Fix from Microsoft site to no avail.Any ideas? Thanks in advance - these are always a pain.

A:Unable to Install Any Windows Updates

Hi PCHELPNEEDED,

This is Mike from the Norton Authorized Support Team.

I read your previous posting and it appears you are having problems with your NIC card. Were you able to resolve these issues and get connectivity back? Also, what version of Windows are you using and do you have the latest patches applied? If not, are you receiving an error when trying to run Windows Update? In order to successfully install the Norton Security Suite you need to have the latest Windows patches applied and also make sure that you have properly removed whatever security product you had installed previously. If by chance you do have more than one real-time security application running at the same time, this can cause conflicts and leave your system more vulnerable to infection.

Thank you,
Miike

Hello,
A few days ago I was running computer maintenance and Windows Updates would not install any of the updates it had downloaded.

With a Windows update error 80246008.

I performed the following:
Clear Cache
Disk Clean up
Defragment
Error Checking
AVAST scan, no threat found
Malwarebytes scan, no threat found.

I've attempted to use the following tools suggested by Microsoft without success.
MicrosoftFixit.wu.MATSKB.Run.exe
WindowsUpdateDiagnostic.diagcab

When I tried start, Background Intelligent Transfer Service, it failed: Error 1068.
I attempted restarting Winsock- no success
SFC scans reported a javaws.exe unable to start

I tried adwcleaner- no success.

I attempted a system restore, with a message that read it could not perform it with an error: 0xc0000022.

And now a popup with "Windows Explorer has stopped working" appears and now my once non-lagging computer is lagging.

Your help is greatly appreciated.

My All-in-One Dell will not install updates, specifically KB2961908, KB2990967, and KB2919355. It just downloads, tries to install, and then uninstalls them. I have run sfc/ scannow, but it states that it could not fix some files. I've run the Windows 8 troubleshooter and it says it fixes the problem, but these updates still don't install. Malwarebytes doesn't find any corrupt files.

A website that I googled said these Windows 8.1 updates should be installed in this order: KB2919442, KB2919355, KB2932046, KB2937592, KB2938439, and KB2934018. KB2919442 is the only one that is installed on my machine. I need some guidance so I can update my desktop.

A:Unable to install Windows 8.1 updates

To fix files that cannot be solved by SFC /Scannow try running:
DISM.exe /online /cleanup-image /restorehealth

Sometimes it is necessary to temporarily disable AV/MW in order to install updates, MS even advises it.
Let's try that first.

I would run KB 2919355 first by itself, (check only that) as that is the Win8.1U Update package.
There is a more involved process, lets hope you don't need to do that.

Hi All,

I have a Windows 7 computer which is currently unable to install updates. I can instruct the computer (through Control Panel > Windows Updates) to install updates, at which point the green progress bar commences and I see 'Downloading updates' displayed. However after a time the progress bar simply stops and I am once more presented with the original 'updates available' screen and the button to 'install updates'.

I have left the computer for up to 6 hours, and after this time I was returned to the original 'install updates' screen. I have scanned for viruses (and found none), furthermore there is an active internet connection (as I am able to browse the web).

Any help here will be greatly appreciated.

For error code 80246007 it was recommended that I change or restart the Background Intelligent Transfer Service (BITS). I am still unable to to install these two updates. Please help.

A:Unable to Install Windows Updates

Just for clarification, is KB976932 the Service Pack 1 for Windows 7? And is KB2653956 the security update pertaining to Remote Code Execution (April 10, 2012)? If yes, the first thing I'd do is run a full anti-malware scan using the free Malwarebytes. If the scan comes back clean I'd run Disk Cleanup to remove any unnecessary "junk" on your rcomputer.

Disk Cleanup - Open and Use

Then I'd run a System File Checker scan from an elevated command prompt (option two, this tutorial.) If any problems are found run the scan 3 times rebooting in between each scan. Damaged or corrupt system files can keep updates from installing.

SFC /SCANNOW Command - System File Checker

If SFC doesn't show any problems I'd try to install SP1 by itself.

Please post back with the results.

Hi folks
I had some kind of disk failure about 6 weeks ago. (On cold start-up, the system displayed Damaged / Diagnosing / Repairing disk system messages). Repair seemed to work okay (and the system has been in use regularly since), except for 3 things:
1) I had lost all the tiles from my Windows 8.1 Start screen, I always default to the regular desktop, so that wasn't too serious and I rebuilt the tiles I need.
2) I couldn't get a right-click menu on the Window button, e.g., to get to the Control panel or Run command. Again I solved this with a bit of research, by copying the default WinX folder to my own profile folder. All good now.
3) Most seriously, I have not since then been able to install Windows Updates. Usually Windows Updates are installed automatically and at system Restart. My McAfee software takes care of all other updates.

I have run the Windows Update troubleshooting utility, which says it's found and repaired a problem, but the system still fails to install any updates.

I currently run Windows Vista Home Premium. I have at least 49 updates (dates ranging back to 10/08) that have not installed. This includes SP1 which has made software installation a nightmare. What do I need to do??

A:Windows Vista - unable to install updates

No worries everyone - I was able to fix my issues by going through Microsoft directly. Turns out it was a bad install of SP1.

After battling massive BSOD all day yesterday, I did a complete factory reset, and many other things which have stopped the BSOD. Unfortunately my CPU is still completely freezing up at random times.

I figured updating all the windows updates would help solve this, but i'm unable to. I keep getting error code 800B0100 when I try to DL them. It was suggested I get the x64 Windows Readiness Tool download. I downloaded that and even that has failed to install. I'm not sure what the issue is. Any help would be appreciated.

Hello!

What error message did you receive when you attempted to install the System Update Readiness Tool (SURT). Can you please try it again and note down the error message and code if you can't remember.

After that, let's jump in with the big guns logs!

Please copy the C:\Windows\Logs\CBS folder to your Desktop, copy the C:\Windows\WindowsUpdate.log file into your new CBS folder on your Desktop, right click on it > Send to > Compressed (zipped) folder, and upload the new file which is created on your Desktop here.

Thanks a lot!

I recently repaired/reinstalled windows XPsp2 on my machine - it was running slow and had other little glitches. After doing this a Windows update icon came up and had a windows update installer as an update - I let it install that. Next time I started up another Windows update icon came up and had 89 updates (having reinstalled from my original XP disc i presume these were the updates since the disc was made) they downloaded OK but immediately after pressing install (both custom and express methods were tried) a dialog box comes up (see attachment)
After each restart windows updates finds 80 or so updates but can't install them - what should I be looking for to solve this problem?

A:[SOLVED] windows updates unable to install

curioser and curioser - i just tried going through the windows update page - it told me I had to get a new file (Windows Genuine Advantage Validation Tool (KB892130)) - downloaded it then tried to install it and same thing - a dialog box saying it could not be installed. Tried to see it in the update history page - should have been there with a cross next to it which you can click on to see why it failed - not even there!
Previous successful install of the Microsoft Windows Installer 3.1 was there with a tick against it.

Found something that worked. Removed folders related to updates in C:\windows\softwaredistribution . WU went off without a hitch. Don't see a way to remove the thread. You may delete/lock this if you wish. Thanks anyways.

Thanks for your time. For some time now, Vista (64-bit) has not been able to install two updates on my computer, specifically KB943899 and 943411. The two always fail. Other updates that appear will come along and install fine, leaving these two as fails everytime. The code in Window's Update is 800736CC. I click "Get Help" and see nothing helpful.

I moved onto trying stand alone updates and they fail as well. Once downloaded, I run them, and get "wusa.exe - Bad Image C:\Windows\system31\wuapi.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error. Try installing the program again using the original installation media or contact your system administrator or the software vendor for support" followed by "Installer encountered an error: 0x800700c1 %1 is not a valid Win32 application". This is the same error for both WUs.

Did a little looking around, haven't seen anything at seems to match my problem exaclty. Did see some people with the same error message under Windows XP who were asked to Run sfc /purgecache and sfc /scannow. Did both, sfc /scannow results in a few minutes of scanning then the window closes at 100% with no information, I assume it had no problems to report.

A:Windows Update unable to install two updates.

1) Go to your "Windows\SoftwareDistribution\Download" folder. You should see
a bunch of folders with random looking names

2) Look in each of these folders until you find one that has a .cab file
with a name that contains the update number that failed (i.e.
Windows6.0-KB929427-x86-EXPRESS.cab or something similar). If you can't find
the cab file there should be some other file in the folder that indicates its
number.

3) Backup then delete the entire folder (the one with the random looking
name) that contains that cab file

4) Repeat for each of the updates that are failing for you

5) You might have to reboot at this point but I didn't have to

6) Either wait for the updater to notify you or manually check for updates

7) The updates should be available for download again

8) Let the updater download and apply the previously failed updates and it
should work this time

What type of computer do you have, is it a desktop or laptop ?

Who is the manufacturer and what security software do you have installed and are you fully up-to-date with everything ?

Is that the full error message or do you get any other, if so could you post a screen shot of the error box.

Don't forget we can't see your machine so the more information you give the better able the experts will be to help you fix your problem.

So some background. I had issues with being able to install ANYTHING from an MSI file. Then I wasn't able to install any updates from Windows Update. I then reinstalled Windows, and am now facing the same issue after a few days. I would rather not reinstall yet again.

I tried doing System Restore, but it just hangs. Windows Installer hangs on "preparing to install".

Any advice?

Hello, this is my first time posting on this forum, so please excuse me if this is miscategorized or if I made any mistakes.
I am having issues installing updates on Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit with Service Pack 1 (I used a reinstallation DVD created from a genuine ISO download of Windows 7 Home SP1, straight from the Microsoft website). It is rather complicated, but here's
a rundown of the issues I've experienced and failed repair attempts.
I had a laptop that I was getting running for a friend of mine. He needed Windows 7 Home reinstalled. I wiped the hard drive, reinstalled Windows, and everything seemed to go fine. Windows successfully activated/validated. The internet worked fine and I
had no issues EXCEPT with Windows Update. After over a week and trying all the "fixes" mentioned below, I gave up. Now, I am having the exact same issue on 2 desktop PC's that I just got running.

Here's what I tried and how the computers reacted:

Laptop was infected with something, not sure what because I inherited it from sister in law. Only details I have is that she clicked on something in her browser, it ran fake virus scan which she clicked on and it got as far as asking for her credit card details to remove threats. Several anti-malware programs were run on it before it came to me.

I have run Malwarebytes on it and found nothing. Have also followed other instructions as per Bleeping Computer member who is helping me:

http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/topic396293.html/page__p__2239713__fromsearch__1#entry2239713

The main problem is that it hangs every time I try to install an antivirus program, or any updates to Windows Defender, or any Windows updates. When it hangs the mouse cursor still moves but nothing else responds. Ctrl Alt Del gives a black screen, that reverts to the frozen desktop after a few minutes.

Several errors have been noted around the time of the system freezing:

Wer Fault.exe Bad Image C:\Windows\System32\dbgeng.dll

Explorer.exe Application Error Instruction at 0x00a4d98b referral memory at 0x00000016. The Memory could not be written.

Hello there,

For the best part of a year I have been struggling with the exact same issue. I am unable to install these 2 pending updates. Consequently, I am unable to update further and am stuck on an old version of Windows 10 exposed to several threats.

I have already contacted Microsoft support several times and their outcome every time was to "purchase higher support". Prior to this post I have reinstalled Windows many times freshly and I am unable to solve this issue.

The only interferences I can think of is the fact I have changed the default program installation folders in the registry to a seperate drive (P:/ Drive) and my user is saved on a seperate drive (S:/ Drive).

The error I get is as follows:

? Cumulative Update for Windows 10 Version 1511 for x64-based Systems (KB3176493) - Error 0x80070bc9
? Security Update for Windows 10 Version 1511 for x64-based Systems (KB3172729) - Error 0x80070bc9

Any help will be GREATLY appreciated as I am getting to the ends of what I can handle.

Many regards,
Sam

Hi - welcome to the forums!

Hmmm - Invalid Class error - that's a VERY rare error in your MGADiag report.....
It appears to be caused by a broken WMI store.

Please run the following commands,

Net stop winmgmt /y
Net stop wscsvc
MD c:\wmibackup
DIR %systemroot%\System32\Wbem\Repository
MOVE %systemroot%\System32\Wbem\Repository\*.* c:\wmibackup
DIR %systemroot%\System32\Wbem\Repository
NET start wscsvc
Net start winmgmt
Net start iphlpsvc

WAIT 10 minutes for the store to rebuild, then reboot.

wait another 10 minutes (just in case), then run another MGADiag report.

By the way, how did you acquire your Windows license? - it's an MSDN-type one, and is not for general sale.
