Ideapad 720s i7-8550u Swap Wifi Card from Atheros QCA9377 to Intel 8265

Q: Ideapad 720s i7-8550u Swap Wifi Card from Atheros QCA9377 to Intel 8265

Yesterday I received my 720s i7-8550u MX150 laptop and on first impressions I am impressed with the laptop (Although I have only used for a couple hours). However the wifi performance of the QCA9377 wifi card is very poor and I would like to swap out for an Intel 8265. I have however read about whitelisting - The fact that Lenovo lock down the bios so the machine only boots with certain hardware installed. Coming from using Dell laptops this seems madness to me! I can get a 'Intel Dual Band Wireless-AC 8265, 2230, 2x2 AC + BT, Vpro' wifi card from Amazon UK for 17.95 delivered but I wanted to check: 1) That I will be ok to swap the cards over and have the warranty maintained. I'll keep the old card so I can replace if I need to send back for warranty reasons.2) That if I swap the wifi card over it will work ok with my laptop My part number is 81BD0044UK and I have looked at the manual at https://download.lenovo.com/consumer/mobiles_pub/ideapad720s-14ikb_hmm_201705.pdf which lists the following card in the parts list: Wirelesslan_WIFI, Intel 8265 2x2AC+BT PCIE M.2 WLAN NV, WIFI 2X2 AC+BT4.1 SW10K97453 Can anyone please help confirm that I am ok to swap the card over please? Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks Matt

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

After a longer period of just frustration about the wifi of my Lenovo IdeaPad 500S-13ISK I started to investigate abut that issue. I use a Fritzbox 7390 DSL-WLAN-Router and frequently the communication stops to work. According https://forums.lenovo.com/t5/Lenovo-IdeaPad-100-305-500-Edge/SOLVED-IdeaPad-510s-Qualcomm-QCA9377-sl... it could be solved by "disabled the WMM/QoS on ... router", but my router doesn't offer that. Using a web search shows, that other notebook manufacturers are exchanging the qualcomm with a intel module fro free on demand.Does lenovo offer such a free service also?

When I undock the laptop by pulling the USB-C cable out (either sleeping beforehand or not sleeping first) then I am getting an intermittent issue where the wifi claims to be disabled. The only way to resolve this is a hard reboot.
Toggling airplane mode doesn't help. Disabling and reenabling the wifi network connection doesn't help. Toggling airplane mode from Fn-PrtScr doesn't help.
It is acting as though the hardware radio is turned off (like when laptops used to come with a hardware radio switch), but with no method to turn it on again.
Looking in the system event log I can see entries from source Netwtw04, Event ID 7012 stating "radio OFF"
Drivers and bios are all up to date.

Any ideas?

WiFi works flawlessly.
Bluetooth devices installed correctly ("This device is working properly") and visible: Intel(R) Wireless Bluetooth(R), Microsoft Bluetooth Enumerator and Microsoft Bluetooth LE Enumerator.
But Bluetooth can't find any devices.
I have tried Intel driver 19.50.0.5 from Dell downloads and official Intel driver 20.0.0_64.
In Windows 10 x64 Bluetooth settings it just gets stuck saying "Your PC is searching for and can be discovered by Bluetooth devices" and never actually finds anything.
Any ideas?

You must actually connect (pair) bluetooth devices like bt headphones or other peripherals to get it to work. What BT devices do you have? The enumerators are not devices. See --

Now be careful but you may want to try opening it up to see if the thing sits right in there. I looked into the 730 quite extensively online before my purchase and saw it mentioned somewhere that a lot of wifi problems may be due to shoddy installation. Mine has an Intel 9260 160MHz adapter and no drops so far.EDIT: BEFORE you do that check your battery settings. Right click on battery> power options>change plan settings>change advanced power settings>wireless adapter settings>power saving mode and fiddle with these settings. Could be Windows' power saving is disabling your wifi though I kind of doubt it. Mine is on maximum power saving and no drops yet.Could you tell if it shows the wifi signal dropping in the bottom right corner or can you tell it's dropping when you're downloading sth or gaming?

Hi All, I have just purchased the Ideapad 720S and have been having a problem with the WiFi. I noticed that it would slow down and the network would become unresponsive while getting content from my NAS box. If I ping my router, I also noticed that there is a high latency which varies loads, never really going below 3ms, but sometime dropping a ping and often going up to 20 - 40ms +! I have tested the laptop on 2.4 and 5 GHz bands and the situation is the same. I have also tried a different Access Point, but the problem persists. My old 7 year old Dell XPS15 does not exibity this problem. I have updated the WiFI Driver (Atheros QCA9377) to the latest on the Lenovo Website, it shows as 12.0.0.295. I have also set the Power plan to max performance on the WiFi apapter. Any help with this problem would be appreciated, Thanks -Ben

When my Carbon 5th is connected to 5 GHz Wifi it randomly resets (drops) after several hours (connection is being lost, Windows reports "Cannot connect to the network"). Sometimes it is possible to connect again manually, sometimes only reboot makes it work again. Connection to 2.4 GHz Wifi always works totally fine. I've seen several similar topics on Intel forums with the same issue, looks like it touches several Intel WiFi adapters. No solution have been found except using only old 2.4 GHz protocols or external WiFi adaptors. I tried different drivers and many parameter sets on my router - nothing solves this issue. It is very sad to have only 20mbps with 2.4 GHz while new standards offer more than 100mbps. Did you face this issue? Any ideas to solve it out?

Hi everyone, the school I work for recently bought 30 Lenovo laptops. Laptops are really fine, and perfectly fit our needs, but... there's an issue with wifi network card. It's really difficult, if not impossible, to join our wifi network. Other devices, like phones or tablets, could join the network without problems, but laptops don't.Reading other boards and other messages in this board too I realized it could be due to a sort of "mismatch" between laptop's wifi adapter and service settings supplied by our network through Netgear WNAP320 access points. I tried different settings on the AP's (as I couldn' do the same on wifi adapters), but none of them seemed to work effectively.Did any of you addressed this issue before, so she/he could give me advices about the best way to solve it?Thanks in adavanceCiao Luciano

Hello lucianoz63! Welcome to Community Forums.
I believe it has something to do with your wifi network settings. What is the error when you're trying to connect? Try to connect to other wifi network or a phone hotspot to isolate the issue, if you can connect to another network, I suggest you contact your wifi provider to check the settings/configuration.

Hello, this is my first post on this forum, hopefully you guys can help.

My problem arose when the wifi card on my Dell Vostro 1015 began mysteriously dropping connection with my LAN. After I manually re-establish my connection, it would only work for about 2 minutes. This became quite annoying. After attempting to uninstall and re-install the card's driver the computer had the same issue. So I finally broke down and decided to reinstall 7 on my laptop. Upon doing so I lost all connectivity. Device manager registers the device as operational, however when attempting to view nearby wireless networks nothing appears (My router is confirmed working and there are about 4 other LANs around me it should be displaying). At first I figured it was a simple driver issue. I obtained drivers first from the "drivers and utilities" CD included with the laptop, still nothing. I then obtained drivers from the dell support website, which still didn't work. After installing the dell drivers I attempted to manually set up a wireless connection and got nothing but an "unexpected error".

This issues has me quite puzzled. It would appear as if it were a driver or hardware compatibility issue; however this particular driver/wireless network adapter has been working with this system since I purchased it. Maybe this is just a windows 7 bug that arose after some miscellaneous update.

Please help!!!!

Hi all--

Found this thread http://forums.techguy.org/networking/1046612-acer-netbook-says-connected-wireless.html

that talked about the exact same issue I was having, where the computer would say it was connected to the network, but wouldn't give me any internet. Using WPA2 encryption on the wireless network. If I disabled encryption, I could use the internet perfectly.

The computer is an Acer Aspireone netbook with an Atheros AR5007EG wifi card in it. I went to the site that a poster (TerryNet) said he hadn't tried, and was able to download the driver for my network adapter.

This site had the driver I needed for winxp and after I loaded it, I was able to access the network and internet through WPA2 encryption.

So I just thought I'd share a solution that worked for me, since I've had good luck with solutions on here in the past.

Hi guys, I have an Atheros AR9285 WiFi card in my laptop, and the other day, it just became very unstable with the connection and it is giving me very low transfer speeds.

I've come to think that a Windows Update replaced the driver in it, how could I fix it, or fix the problem?

Thanks alot guys!

A:Atheros WiFi card - Bad connection/transfer speed

You can search the model number online and add "drivers" with or with out the quotations; and there should be a download link in the first 20 results just make sure its a reputable website you're downloading from.

When you run the installer you'll often have an uninstall option if they're already installed. Un install and reinstall and see if that fixes the issue.

Other things to look for are you torrenting? is your cpu always at 100% (would indicate some kind of malware)? you should check your start up programs to make sure that there isn't anything starting up and running in the back ground.

Also where are you in relation to the router/modem? You'd be surprised how much of a difference a few walls make.

CPU-Z shows, that allowed multipliers for Intel 8550U processor are 4-40. When setting "Maximum processor state" to 99% under Windows power options, then multiplier is usually 19, which corresponds to 1.8 GHz. When "Maximum processor state" is "100%", then multiplier is usually 40 (maximal value), but in this case fan starts working loudly. Is there a way to change max allowed multiplier to e.g. 30 (out of 40)? Idea is to avoid excessive fan noise. Computer is Lenovo Thinkpad T480 laptop.

For the benefit of anyone struggling with slow wireless speeds on a Lenovo laptop with the Qualcomm Atheros QCA9377 wireless card, here's what worked for me. (tl;dr: disable WMM/QoS on your router) So I just purchased a new IdeaPad 510S-14ISK.  From the start, the wireless seemed slow, but I planned to remove Windows 10 and install 7, so I didn?t pay too much attention.  After a clean install of Windows 7, the wireless was still very slow.  Running speedtest.net I found 1-2 Mbps down and 30+ up.  Other laptops in the house (Dell and Asus) get as high as 45 down and 45 up.  (I have Verizon 50/50.)  On Ethernet, the IdeaPad gets the same speed as anything else, so this was specifically a wireless issue. I spent a lot of time reading different solutions and trying some random things: Removing and reinstalling the wifi driverLogging into safe mode with networkingDisabling b/g support on the routerUsing an optimization tool from VerizonEtc? Nothing made any difference. Finally I found a couple of articles: http://www.ybrikman.com/writing/2012/02/19/got-slow-download-but-fast-upload/ (where I stole the tl;dr summary) http://www.tomshardware.co.uk/answers/id-2753464/atheros-qualcomm-qca9377-802-compatibility-issues.h... As soon as I disabled the WMM/QoS on my FIOS router speeds on the IdeaPad jumped up to 30+/30+.  Amazing difference and performance is perfect.  I think this problem is... The update downloads and says that it needs to restart to complete the install, but after restarting and running Lenovo Update again, the same driver update shows up once again as "Critical update." Does anyone know how to actually get this critical update to install?

Hi,  Maybe this is a dumb question, but I couldn't find the answer... Lenovo X1 Yoga 2nd Gen's Intel AC 8265 should be able to work at 450 Mbps, but it only works at 300 Mbps.  Does it have only two antennas on the OLED model so it can't reach full speed, so to speak? Or is it related to something else?  Thanks!

If I helped you, please give me some kudos! ^^

Hi, Interested in buying the 720S 14 with 8th gen intel cpu and MX150,  but I can't find one to actually hold in my hands and get a feel for. I have seen other models in the 300 and 500 series and wondered if any of them are a close match for the 720s 14 in looks and build. This is in the UK if this makes any difference. Many thanks in advance Manco

Hi, I am new to these forums so a big hello to everyone. I am looking for confirmation on compatibility with T440s (BIOS 2.44) and Intel AC 8265 Wireless card (FRU: 01AX704) Can anyone confirm in BIOS 2.44 (Latest) if the following card above has been added to the BIOS Whitelist? I would rather get some confirmed solid confirmation before I purchase. The Intel AC 7260 is not the greatest of cards and an upgrade would be nice. I don't see it feasible that Lenovo would have individual whitelists for individual ThinkPad series, I would say that it is likely they update all the whitelists as and when new cards come on to the market? Best Wishes Vince

We have just purchased the XPS 13 over the past weekend.  The laptop was working great, until the creators update occured.e

once the update occured the WLAN auto-config service appears to crash during the association phase when the laptop is attempting to connect to an SSID.  It starts to connect, then the autoconfig config crashes and the laptop stops probing for beacons.  I am able to get Wi-FI to work with one of my USB Wi-FI cards.
I have had to roll back to windows 10 in-order to get the wifi card to work.  I have tried the latest drivers from intel and the Dell site and I have been unable to get the wifi-card to function.

The Creator's Build did not bother my system.  Other than always having to set my system to a Private network after such an upgrade/update, it works normally.
Can we assume all of your Drivers/Bios updates are done?  If you want to give some info regarding your configuration, we can compare systems.
Windows 10 seems to have a built in driver for that Wi-Fi adapter.  The Dell driver should work better, so you might try to reinstall it, just in case or vice versa..

I have a X1 Carbon 5th Gen with built-in AC 8265. It can not connect to the 5G band. My other devices, like iPhone and Chromecast work just fine in 5G band. X1 can find the SSID for 5G, but can not link to it.I updated the driver to 20.10.2.2, also confirmed the setting for properties. Still it does not work. Is there any setting I missed?
