Customizing Windows Explorer's/File Explorer's Right Pane (Win7/Win10)

Q: Customizing Windows Explorer's/File Explorer's Right Pane (Win7/Win10)

Been grappling for some time to customizing the right pane of either Win7 or Win10 (not sure if they respond the same) to allow permanent column and column title arrangements. Ideally I would like to apply such attributes to a specific folder and all it's sub-folders. An example is below:
I would also love to be able to set these columns as fixed widths, but this is not as important as the specific columns themselves.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hi to all, i have a laptop running Windows 7 Professional. The problem is strange and havent had it on any other Windows 7 machine.

If i click the folder icon on the bottom tool bar (windows explorer) then in the left hand pane expand the C drive then right click on any folder it instantly displays a dialog saying Explorer has experienced a problem and needs to close, windows is
looking for a fix for this problem (cant remember exact wording) then Explorer.exe restarts. This happens on the local C drive and Network drives.
I though it could be a permissions problem so have taken ownership of all files & folders on the C drive which made no difference, i have removed the laptop from our server / domain and it is still the same / no change.
Can anyone shed any light on this problem or offer any ideas on fixing it? the laptop is only a few months old and is i5 / 4GB RAM Dell machine running Windows 7 Pro SP1 office 2003 Pro, checked for virus & adware & all clean.

A:Explorer.exe crashes when righ click on item in left pane on windows explorer nothing in system logs, explorer.exe restarts.

The faulting module (Fault Module Name: SHELL32.dll) shell32.dll is a Windows system file however the file that is actually causing the crash may be a third party file which from the symptoms
may be a third party context menu handler.
The following link has some info and a download to ShellExView which you can use to selectively disable third party context menu handlers to find out a problematic one:
You could try disabling all non-Microsoft context menu handlers and then, if the problem resolves, re-enable them one at a time to see which one was the problem.
BTW, the error should be logged in the Event Viewer Application log as a Application Error involving explorer.exe

This has stumped me so good I actually signed up to a forum... Hey guys..

Long story short.. "Show Libraries" refuses to work in File Explorer

I've done this.. And it doesn't do anything. It doesn't even leave a check or anything.

I've done this.. And while it leaves a check showing it's "working".. It still isn't showing my libraries

I've also done this.. It checks, I hit apply, ok to close the box and nope.. If I re-open the folder options again the box is unchecked.

The only way in File Explorer I can get it to show my libraries is use "Show All Folders".. Which I don't want to do.

The strangest part is.. In the OPEN Dialog (the dialog that opens if you want to browse files to upload to say, imgur).. It works as it should..

I've done a sfc /scannow and it comes out clean.. I have no idea how File Explorer got so corrupt. Windows updates are all current, etc..

I've searched Brink's tutorials and haven't found what I'm sure must be there--so a link from someone would be handy.

1. I'd like to set an explorer taskbar (or any explorer) shortcut to open a certain folder by default. I inserted 'C:\MyStuff' in Properties/Start In but that doesn't work?

2. I had dragged the 'name' explorer from under Accessories at some earlier point thinking that would create a copy--it did not. Now there is no explorer located under accessories. If I were to replace that shortcut with another would I have to go find explorer.exe and do so from there?

3. I did have a shortcut located on my Rocketbar that I could click more than once to create more than one instance of explorer--but I cannot do that with the taskbar shortcut. What had I previously done differently to allow multiple instances?

A:Customizing file explorer

Hello Mark,

The tutorial below can help show you how to change the "Target" of the shortcut to open to what you like instead.Windows Explorer Taskbar Icon - Change Open To Target
However, you could use the tutorial below to pin any folder you like to the taskbar that will work how you wanted.Taskbar - Pin or Unpin a Folder
For shortcuts in other locations, you could just create a shortcut directly from the folder to use there instead.Shortcut - Create for a File, Folder, Drive, or Program in Windows

I have received an e-mail response from the creator of Windows Double Explorer / Windows Dual Pane Explorer (names seem to be interchangeable) . My apologies for not knowing the proper terms, but I hope anyone will be able to understand what I’m about to describe.

According to information provided by the creator of WDE / WDPE one uninstalls the program by doing the following:

Navigate to C:\Users\<username>\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs. There you should find a shortcut file (look for a file not a folder) named Windows Dual Pane Explorer. Select that shortcut file, options click and writedown the target path of the shortcut. Delete the shortcut. Navigate to the location the target path dictates. There you should find both a zipped and an unzipped folder of WDE / WDPE. Delete the folders and also any other shortcut files to WDE / WDPE that you may have created and you’re done.

Apparently WDE / WDPE is never actually installed. Instead WDE/WDPE initially downloads a folder named WDE Portable zipped. When this download folder is launched it unzips another folder named WDE Portable unzipped into the same directory. During the unzipping process a shortcut is created on the desktop that points back to the unzipped folder. Thusly WDE/WDPE never gets listed into Windows Control Panel’s Program Files & Features section. That’s why it can’t be uninstalled as one might ordinarily expe... Read more

When I open an instance of windows explorer, the navigation pane show little or nothing (no drives, folders, etc.). Also the preview pane does not show a preview for any selected files (See Capture1.JPG).
If I open a second (or higher) instance of windows explorer, the navigation pane functions properly (the preview still does not show) (See Capture2.JPG).
I have previews set to show (See Capture3.JPG).
Also occasionally, the file icons will be blank instead of showing the file type specific icon. When this happens, the address bar also seems to take a long time to load. The load bar will stop before reaching the end and won't finish (See Capture4.JPG).

Does anyone know what is going on or how to fix this?

FYI I am running 64 bit Windows 7 Pro.

Try Explorer++ and see if you get the same problem.

Need to enable "Folders" view.
If it works then you can rule out problems with system files and it's probably a buggy shell extension.

When opening Excel files off our DFS while having Windows Explorer Preview Pane enabled our users will get the "open in read-only" notification about 60% of the time. This forces them to open the file in read-only mode...or close out, cross
their fingers, and try opening again.
I applied the reg keys listed in this support article
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/942146, rebooted the Win7 Pro x64 test client, and we still get the File Lock notices when the preview pane is enabled. Anybody else figure out a solid solution for this
issue besides disabling the preview pane?

A:Explorer Preview Pane causes File Lock

Thanks for the link Alex. The client is Win7 SP1 and I've tried adding the OpLock registry keys and rebooting but no change. At the moment we're not pushing out Office patches so I may run a full update for grins.

I noticed one of the suggestions in the technet post you provided is to disable the preview pane - which is allowing the file open process to run as expected for us. Luckily there are very few people that have explorer setup with preview
pane so there's only been one report so far.

This is something that's been bothering me since I upgraded this Dell XPS8700 to windows 10 some two weeks or more ago.

The left pane in File Explorer seems to duplicate my drive letters and info other than what's under the entry "This PC".

If I look down the list, starting just below the Libraries folder, the drive letters are repeated but not all of them.

Like I have under This PC : C: , DVDRW D:, E:, F: , a card reader, H,L,K, external drives L:, another card reader letter M:, a second external drive N:, followed by some NAS folders I have mapped, V, W, X. and Y.

Down past the Libraries folder are again: H, L, N, M, K, and I, then Network etc, Homegroup etc.

Hard to describe, I could do a screen shot and post it if that would help see it.

How and why are all these drive letters getting into this tree twice? Anyone?

TIA - Gene

I've searched the tutorials about file and folder settings but I couldn't find this:

The windows explorer has a kind of status bar that can show details about my files. But how can I configure what details I want to see?
E.g. when I have a jpg file, Win seems to think it's a photo and it shows me the date when I took the photo, it shows ratings etc. But I don't want that, not all my jpgs are photos and I certainly don't need ratings.
And when I've selected multiple items, it doesn't show me the file size of the bunch, I have to do an extra click on "Show details" to see how big they are all together.

Any chance of customizing this?

Unfortunately, unlike Macintosh OS, you cannot change the color of any folders, they are all yellow. However, you can change the folders Icon. Right click a folder, choose Properties/Customize/Change Icon. You can choose one of the icons from the list or browse to one on your computer.

Hi all,

does anyone know if it is possible to customize the file info items shown in the windows explorer status bar when a single file is selected? It's currently showing [File Type|Date Modified|Size] for generic types, and a few additional items for common media formats, such as [Duration] and [Bit Rate]. I'm unclear if this is the standard behaviour or if it has something to do with the columns selected for Details view in the main pane, or something along those lines.

Tried google and found one related thread, which however didn't contain any helpful suggestions.

A:Customizing Windows Explorer Status Bar

Wow Kassy,

Nice question!

I've been looking in to this for ages and I've only really found this:

- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -

To edit the infotip/tooltip for the 'My Computer' icon to reflect the computer name, you'd set " InfoTip" to %computername% in this key: HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{20D04FE0-3AEA-1069-A2D8-08002B30309D}

You can search the 'REG_SZ' data to find the icon you want - So the above example would be 'COMPUTER'. {208D2C60-3AEA-1069-A2D7-08002B30309D} represents 'NETWORK' et-cetera et-cetera..

Not really sure where the other info would come in to it - There is a 'LocalizedString' which is a REG_EXPAND_SZ and the data is '@%SystemRoot%\system32\shell32.dll,-9217'. Which is obviously the icon, rather than the data. I'd make some changes and play about with it until I got my head around it, but I'm currently on Win 7 Pro X64, so there is not much point!

Hope it helps!

Do I need resource hacker to do this? Where can I find the files that contain these captions so as to copy them?

Welcome to the Seven Forums

I would recommend first that you start a new custom theme so you do not corrupt the original, look at Post #38 Here it will show you how.

You will need to do 1 of these 2 ways of Enabling custom themes for it to work.
Enabling Custom Themes - Windows 7
Theme - How to Apply Custom Themes

OK the images you will need to edit our in the Steam image #971 in the .msstyles in the new theme folder that you should make from above. Yes resource hacker can be used (I never have much luck with it)
If it's too difficult I have Ave's Windows7 Style Builder and could make those changes to the buttons.(This program breaks down that Steam image #971 into individual locations) and posted here in a zip folder. Or if you would happen to purchase it I could show you what to do.

Let me know.

I have need of a context menu in Windows 7 Explorer that is essentially the "move to folder" command, but with a twist.

Instead of bringing up a dialog of where to move a file, I'd like to bring up a list. The list would have three types of entries:
1) Recently visited folders
2) List of favorite folders (pinned)
3) Standard browse to folder

So, I have a few questions:

1) Has this been done already? If so, where can I get it?
2) Where can I get Windows' recently visited folders programmatically? If necessary, I can get these from recently used files, so where would I get the recently used files list programmatically?
3) Is there any source code I can build off of which does something similar (preferably Python)? If necessary: C++, C#, Java?

I'm aware of the
CodePlex source code for the MS examples, but they are long and pretty different from what I'm trying to acheive.

Hi guys,

Am new here!!! I have got a problem that has been niggling me for ages! Whenever I double click on a particular drive within my windows explorer to open it - it comes up with the search window AND NOT the drive itself. I have to right click on the drive concerned and then select explore or open, to bypass the search facility. I have noticed that the search option is in bold and at the top of the list, which seems to stipulate that it is the default opition.

My question is how can I changed the "search" opition from being the default opition to making the "explore" opition being the default, so that when I double click on the drive concerned it opens that up and not the "search" window.

I have tried scanning the web to solve this but I cant seem to get any further forward - this is probably so easy to do but I dont know how to do it. Can you please help.

Thanks in advance!

However sadly, this program did not remove any of these unwanted items.

I wasn't certain which forum to post this question in so I went with General Discussion. As per my usual etiquette, if anyone can help me reach a solution I will update my post with a clear guideline on how to fix the problem so that future users won't have to ask the same question.

I am wanting to to the folders into links like in XP so that by clicking the name of the folder it will expand. Windows 7 seems to have gone to a little triangle symbol next to the name for this purpose, but it is annoying spending time trying to hit that small symbol. Is there any way to make the listings into links? Thanks.

I'm a 5 day Win 8 new-bee leaning new stuff every day.
The latest thing to have me stumped is the Navigation Pane in explorer.
I don't want them all to look the same. I have folders on my desktop, in which all I want to see is the short cuts to apps. I went into View/Navigation Pane, and deselected Navigation Pane. I got the look I wanted, but it applied to all folders that I opened. Whenever I click on Windows Explorer, the Navigation pane was missing. If I restored it, it again applied to all folders. I am NOT clicking on Apply to All Folders in View/Options. So why can't I get what I want?

A:Windows Explorer Navigation Pane - What am I doing wrong?

Hello Jeff, and welcome to Eight Forums.

In File Explorer (renamed Windows Explorer), the navigation pane turn on or off setting is a universal setting for all folders and libraries windows. It can't be turned on or off for some and not others.

It was this way in Vista and Windows 7 as well.
