F8 Safe Mode does not work, Lenovo ThinkPad Edge E545

Q: F8 Safe Mode does not work, Lenovo ThinkPad Edge E545

Lenovo ThinkPad Edge E545 laptop with Win7 pre-installed.
Had it about 5 days, and just tried to boot F8 Safe Mode.
It refuses to acknowledge the F8 key and boot into the Safe Mode menu screen.
According to Microsoft website, F8 is supposed to work in Win7.
Is this a known bug in my hardware?  In Win7?
Or, I hope not, is my Windows installation corrupted?

Preferred Solution: F8 Safe Mode does not work, Lenovo ThinkPad Edge E545

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Are you tapping the f8 key repeatedly or just one time . . .
If msconfig is working you could just use it to force safe mode on the next reboot.

Hey! So I bought my Lenovo Thinkpad Edge E545 about a year and a half ago, and right out of the box this brand new computer was EXTREMELY slow. Internet pages load extremely slow, games play choppy and slow, I cannot watch streams with my computer, and I cannot view HD videos on any platform. This should not be happening with a brand new computer with 16 gigs of ram. I should've submitted it for repair or returned it earlier but I guess I always thought I would find the problem and download a driver or something and the problem would be fixed, but alas, it is still functioning like a laptop from 2001. Any advice or help is much appreciated, thanks.

Hi Monger,
Welcome to Lenovo Forums.
Maybe you would want to remove any unnecessary think vantage software?s or other software?s that you don't need.
Additionally try updating the OS and drivers, you can let Windows update do this.
Try disabling all start-up programs, to see if's it's a faulty program. The easiest way is to use the msconfig program. I would also try seeing what program is eating up the resources, ctrl+shift+esc.
I hope the above information helps.
Tap that kudos button if I helped. If you find a post helpful and it answers your question, please mark it as an "Accepted Solution"!

Hi all!My E545 has 2 GPU: AMD Radeon HD 7640G + 8570M Dual Graphics.  7640g  - integrated one with cpu and 8750m - an additional one.7640g doesn't support full hd resolution, but 8750m does (http://graphics-cards.specout.com/l/2411/AMD-Radeon-HD-8750M)So, the question is -  if i connect an external monitor (22 inch for ex.) to my laptop, will it (monitor) show picture on Full HD resolution, or not? Just dont want to buy one and then work with 1380x768 as now on native laptop screen)))Can anyone gimme any approved information?Tnx!

I have a Lenovo Thinkpad E545 that's about 18 months old. Everything has been fine until now. I upgraded from Windows 7 Pro to Windows 10 without a problem. However, I now realize the my CD/DVD player is not working properly. I inserted several different DVDs and CD. I can hear the player spinning as if it's trying to read the disc, but when I check File Explorer, the drive has not been recognized (and no CD or DVD starts).  After doing research, I tried most of the suggestions here: https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/314060 but I was unable to try to "fix registry entries" because I couldn't find Upperfilters and LowerFilters listed. Perhaps that suggestion didn't apply since the suggestion said to remove them.  I checked the BIOS to make sure the DVD was enabled.  Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Hey all! I've been sporting my Lenovo Edge 15 for about two years now. I run Windows 10 and have done so since I first got the computer (I believe when I purchased it I upgraded right away). If you need more specifics I have this PC right here! Airplane mode works if I manually activate it via the wi-fi settings, but the hotkey, F7, won't turn it on/off.  The key doesn't appear to be broken, just the hotkey function it carrys, as using Fn activates the basic F7 function. All my other hotkeys work perfectly. Anyone have the same issue? Know of a fix?

I am presently researching to purchase a laptop for my wife at Christmas who is a teacher thus she will need to access the internet, do Office work, grading, emails, research, etc., but no gaming at all.

Will be running 7 64 OS, with 4 gigs of RAM, and hopefully a 7200 rpm hd. Leaning towards the i5 processor.

The Thinkpad Edge is part of Lenovo's excellent T Series but somewhat less expensive. Looking at current configurations it seems it will deliver what I am looking for but I know nothing of the quality build.

Would love to hear back from people who have used this series and/or from ITs who repair laptops for their insights.

Okay, a School-issued ThinkPad Edge. It was bought new with a Windows 7 and an intel core i3 processor. I download Skype, and part of the set-up process is the mic part, and that's how I found out that the BUILT IN mic DID NOT work. I've looked around,
but all of the solutions I see I've either already tried, or wouldn't work in this situation (For example, the computer's original OS is Win7, it's not going to be an outdated sound card!) Does anybody have a specific solution? I've tried going in and messing
with the sound levels and the boost, I've made sure the mic wasn't muted. I even have the little green check in that one part saying that it should be working! I have no idea what else to do, and this is a serious issue for a lot of people. I can survive without
the mic for a while, but not forever. I would also appreciate it if I didn't get a hundred people saying that they're having the same issue. If you have a suggestion on how to fix it, then great! Maybe complain a little about your issues with the mic as you're
doing so, but if you're not giving a possible solution, then
please don't say anything here. Hope I get an answer soon! <:)

Hi guys,I have a laptop which is a Lenovo ThinkPad Edge E431 model running on Window 10 Pro OS. It is a Core i3-3110M CPU @2.40GHz 8GB RAM 64-bit OS. My issue is :WLAN / WiFi keeps going ON and OFF every now and then. The WiFi once connected keeps connecting and disconnecting every minute and it sometimes take forever to reconnect back. I will need to right-click on the WiFi Symbol at the bottom right and click on 'Troubleshoot problems' to recover from this issue. Once recovered, it disconnects again. Some Observations :The issue could be because of the conflict between the Bluetooth drivers and the WiFi drivers. If Bluetooth is disabled then the WiFi works correctly. There will be no problems regarding the WiFi getting disconnected. These are the following details of the hardwares and their respective driver versions. Network : Intel(R) Centrino(R) Wireless -N 2230Driver Version : Date : 30-04-2015  Bluetooth : Intel(R) Wireless Bluetooth(R)Driver Version : 18.1.1525.1445Driver Date : 18-06-2015 I have no idea why these two are causing this issue, but I really need to fix this. And it has been atleast a year since I bought this laptop and it has been showing this problem since 4 - 5 months back. Please let me know if there is a work around for this. If not atleast I hope the above information might help fixing the issue. If there is any additional information that is needed from me, please leave a m... Read more

Hi All As per the title suggests - just purchased one of these off the web and it's a nice little machine. Tried to fit a 128gb OCZ Vertex drive but it doesn't slot all the way into the SATA port, whereas a standard HDD does. Appears to be down to the physical profile of the drive and the slot. Does anyone know of an SSD which will fit? I saw another thread which mentioned the Crucial M4 and the x25-m SSDs, but wondered if there were any other owners who could shed some light on this.

I would like to install windows XP on the 44GB partition I made, and have a dual boot system.
But I am having trouble installing Windows XP (pro w/ SP3 and net framework 3.0, and my sata driver slipstreamed)

At first, I just got a blue screen after the disk attempted loading files. Then, I slipstreamed the SATA driver for XP for the EDGE 15 onto the XP installation Disk (There were three .inf files in the driver folder, I only slipstreamed the first one, and copied the driver folder into the image folder, following this guide: SATA Drivers - Slipstream into Windows XP CD).

This seemed to get me past the problem. I was able to format the 44GB partition the disk began installing. Then the computer restarted to finish the installation.
However, during the XP installation, I got a hang up at 33mins. After repeated tries, I get this hang up every time.

I tried disabling as many unnecessary devices in the Bios as I could, but I still get the same hang up.

I tried to find the problem by opening the command prompt and typing setupapi.log (in D:\Windows (the 44GB partition)
However, the last entry in the log was "completed successfully". (The guide I followed using "setupapi.log" was for the 34 min hang up. Since mine is 33min maybe its a completely different problem).

Should I try to slipstream all the drivers onto XP installation disk? (there appear to be over 100 drivers on the Lenovo support page for the thinkpad edge 15)

A:Trying to install Windows xp on partition of Lenovo Thinkpad Edge 15

You really only want the text file for the SATA controller driver, in order to overcome the bluescreen to display the HD partitions for install. Adding other drivers can actually create complications that cause install to fail while installing these drivers, which can be done from the desktop after install anyway.

Have you tried installing your XP programs in Win7 Compatibility Mode,
or virtualizing XP from within Win7 using XP Mode in Ultimate/Pro or freeware like Virtual Box, VMWare, or Virtual Player? These are easier than wrestling with an XPired OS.

Hello, I am having trouble activating Windows on my laptop after a fresh OS reinstall and would appreciate any help you can give.

Lenovo Thinkpad Edge 13
Processor: Intel U7300 1.3GHz
System: Windows 7 Professional 64-bit
Memory: 138 GB

I bought this laptop from a programmer friend in 2010. He had installed an OEM copy of Windows 7 pro (and there is nothing on the bottom listing the Windows product key). Recently I decided to install a fresh copy of Windows because it was slow and had too much crap on it. I ran Belarc Advisor to obtain the 25-digit Windows product key and other application product keys. I put a Windows install disk on a flash drive and reinstalled Windows 7 Professional 64-bit.

However, when I try to activate Windows using the key that was registered to the device for the last 3 years, it says "The product key you have entered does not appear to be a valid Windows 7 key." I found a live support site for Microsoft problems, but after I explained the issue they tried to sell me another copy of Windows for $399.99 (WTF!). I tried Lenovo's online live support and they said to talk to Microsoft, not them.

Can anyone tell me if there is a way to activate Windows using the key I have, or do I have to obtain a new key? If I have to obtain a new key, do I have to reinstall Windows? With an OEM disk? Would I need to buy a Thinkpad OEM disk? What is the cheapest way to resolve this?

I bought the 16GB RAM upgrade for my ThinkPad about 9 months ago and when I first installed it, it was working fine. But a few months back, I looked at my system specs and noticed that the computer was only recognizing 8GB of the 16GB. I thought that one of the sticks might have gone bad, so I checked them individually and both of them were recognized when by themselves, but when both are installed, the computer won't recognize both. I also updated the BIOS thinking that would help, but it did not. So my theory is that the bottom RAM port is bad since it was working before and it isn't now and that both are working properly when by themselves. My warranty is up, not sure if I can renew it just to get it serviced, or if that is going to be a possible suggestion. Any ideas? Thanks!

Hello all, I bought my lenovo Edge 2-1580 in December, but recently, the display won't turn on after I wake it up from sleep mode. The rest of the notebook still turns on and the power button is lit, but the screen will stay black even if I move the mouse or press any keys. I have to do a manual shutdown and then turn it on again, which works but then the problem occurs again when it goes to sleep mode. I've updated the drivers and disabled the notebook from going to sleep, but if I manually put it into sleep mode the problem continues. I've seen this as a common issue regarding Windows 10 as well. Any help would be appreciated. Thank you!

A:Lenovo Edge 2-1580 won't wake up after sleep mode

I just resolved this issue recently with my Flex 3 1580, so hopefully my solution works for you.  First, update the video/graphics driver (intel or nvidia) from the Drivers & Software page on support.lenovo.com.  Test sleep mode again.  If the screen is still not turning back on, then update your BIOS.  Back on the Drivers & Software page, look for the latest BIOS update and run it.  In both cases, but especially for the BIOS update, make sure your laptop is plugged in.

Please do not post your Hijack this logs here. Due to Forum Rules we cannot assist in malware removal here. Have you tried a different browser (Chrome, Firefox etc)? When you say IE only works in Safe Mode with Networking, Do you mean you boot the computer normally and use IE (safe mode) or are you booting the computer into Safe Mode with Networking? In other words you can't boot normally?

After upgrading to SP2 about a month ago so I could take finals on my computer at school, i noticed that my computer wouldn't boot up in safe mode (i just get a blank dark screen and i can hear the computer doing something but giving it a reasonable amount of time it doesn't progress from that screen). It didn't concern me because normal mode was working and i was able to take my tests. But now I want to get to the bottom of this. I delayed getting sp2 because i had a feeling it would mess up my computer. (i've had other problems too with visual skins but i was able to resolve those). If it matters, i ran a scan of my system with spyware doctor and it said i had a trojan.dialer and needed to boot in safemode to get rid of it. When I tried, it wouldn't load. Oh, btw, any way to get rid of that trojan.dialer without using safemode?

Not sure what I have stumbled upon here. Was trying to download some music from SugarSync that I had from another PC, realized I did not have a music player installed and tried to download VLC and that's when things went bad.
I had run my Anti-Virus (Avast ) and it found nothing,
I just now opened it (in safe mode) to obtain the official name/version and found it to display a large red banner declaring I am unprotected and the Avast service turned off.
None of those controls on that panel work
Am assuming some infection did this as I did not turn it off!
When I clicked Scan it displays "Unable to start scan. There are no more endpoints available from the endpoint mapper"
This is an Asus G73JW Laptop

I use

Any Idea as to what I have run into here?

Have you performed a System Restore recently?

Once you have uninstalled the old version, install the version you downloaded.

I just recovered from accidentally disabling my display adapter (*****). I logged into linux to get on the net and found the thread solved by Spike and also by glowingnissan07 on this issue and found that neither of these threads solved the problem exactly. Spikes solution finally ended up working with one change and I thought I would post it here in case anyone else had the same gut wrenching experience (thanks Microsoft).

Phenomena: accidentally disabled the display adapter and after the XP loading screen you get nothing. Dead monitor. Safe mode hangs each time and "VGA Mode" does nothing different.

Solution: Here is Spikes original solution (thanks Spike) with a note for step 5. Also beware of "found new hardware" wizard etc popping up at system startup interfereing with these instructions. I recommend pressing alt-f4 a few times after startup to make sure any startup programs get closed and then doing these instructions. Good Luck.

1, use the up and down arrow keys to go to your user, and hit enter to select. if you normally have to enter a password, then do it now, and hit enter again.

2, press and hold the windows key, and tap 'R' (this is the keyboard shortcut to the run box)

My 4-year old Gateway laptop (running Windows Vista Home Premium) just froze last night. Tried restarting it, and every time I get to the Windows icon I get a frozen mouse on the login screen or a blank screen. Sometimes, it makes a sound like someone is pressing one key on the keyboard with the Windows icon in the background. When I shut down and restart in safe mode, I am able to use both mouse and keypad. I am able to login in safe mode and safe mode with command prompt, but not safe mode with networking (same result as starting in normal mode).

I have used the install cd, and tried all of the options on the repair menu. Nothing has helped - neither startup repair, nor system restore. No memory errors were detected, either.

Acc. to the system restore menu, the last windows update was early last week (and I have been to use the computer without any issues until late last night). Also, I have McAfee AV, and it ran without detecting any issues 24-hours before the problems began.

Any ideas on what I should try to fix this problem, other than reformating the harddisk? I am not very tech-savvy, so if you want more info, I'd appreciate you walking me through the process. Thanks in advance.

A:Mouse and keypad frozen in normal mode, but work in safe mode

Hi Horan. Welcome to TSF!

Since you are able to boot into SAFE MODE with COMMAND PROMPT, do that and then at the prompt type "sfc /scannow" (without the quotation marks) and let it run. After it completes that, make a note of any messages and then reboot your system and see if that helps.

Also, what happens when you just use the touchpad and don't plug in a mouse? Any difference or does it still lock up?

Good day!

I was working with Adobe After Effects CS3 on my Windows XP and it exported my movie as a 1GB big swf file for some reason. I figured, hey, After Effects has done worse, so I opened it. That completely locked up my computer and I had to hard reset it. I tried to restart it, but it gave me a blue screen STOP error so fast that I couldn't read it, then it reverted back to restarting. Now whenever I try to boot my computer, it immediately sends me to the Windows Advanced Options Menu where I can pick a number of booting options. NONE of the options I can choose from work. Not even Safe Mode or Last Known Good Configuration. They ALL start booting as a computer normally should, then it flashes the blue screen STOP error and starts restarting again, sending me back to the Windows Advanced Options Menu.

NONE of the options work! I cant get to the desktop no matter what, not even in Safe Mode. What can I do??

I have search all over the internet and other people have had the same problem, but no one seems to be solving it fully. I hope I can find the genius that can do this.

A:No booting modes (Safe Mode, Normal Mode, etc.) work!...

If you have a Windows XP CD you may be able to fix it. For details see: http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/using/helpandsupport/learnmore/tips/doug92.mspx

Good luck.

I have Thinkpad T43, with windows XP professional.

Since few days whenever i launched my ATI catalyst control center I would get BSOD and laptop will boot automatically and then everything would be fine.

Then while browsing my wife downloaded some media player exe, and since then my IE was redirecting to unknown sites (xalab etc) not to mention various ad pop-ups. One of the online video sites gave a message that I have TROJ/Rustok-N. (Also I would like to mention since couple of months my System Restore was not working although everything else was working fine)

I ran spybot, malawarebytes, trojanremover and removed whatever was reported. But the problem persisted, so I renewed my Norton Internet Security (actually got Norton 360), ran scans but it couldnt find anything.

Then I booted in safe mode and ran all these again, last thing I remember trojanremover prompted to remove something like sv~.exe and i did, when i restarted the system in normal mode I got BSOD and laptop rebooted, I disabled automatic restart on failure but it keeps on doing that.

I then went to Access IBM and restored by configuration which brings back the system files to previous state (the most latest point available was 07/2006)
I still got the BSOD while booting into normal mode, but safe mode was working fine.

I then went into safe mode and disabled couple of services on startup, then my laptop booted fine in normal mode, I found that now windows xp was reset to SP2, so i ran windows update w... Read more

The other day I booted up my notebook in the morning and was reading the news when my browser froze, then the entire system locked up. Now it takes an absurd amount of time to boot up and once I'm in, the system once again freezes if I try to do anything. I am able to get into Safe Mode and it runs fine with no problems. So I am clueless as the what the problem is. I have tried performing a clean boot and that yielded no results. I am running Win 7 Home Premium 64 bit.

My wife's IBM Thinkpad X41 won't finish booting - it populates the desktop with icons, but doesn't finish applying the icon pictures to them - about half of them remain as generic icons - and it doesn't get any further than this. The Start->All Programs list opens blank, the cursor goes to an hour glass, and the machine is unusable, it just won't do anything.

It will boot OK in Safe Mode, so I tried disabling all the startup items in case one of them was hanging, but no better. Then I tried a system restore, but again no better. I am not sure what to try next, so I would appreciate any suggestions.
