Well, finally time to delete Norton?

Q: Well, finally time to delete Norton?

Hey people, Norton is REALLY slowing down my computer. There is SIX (Yes, SIX.) OH WAIT, SEVEN. Svchost.exe processes running at the SAME time. A total of 48,628 K of my memory usage!!! Just from those 6 svchost.exe processes. 59,012 K TOTAL. Now, with FireFox running, I have 316M/1226M Commit Charge! The svchost.exe processes sometimes some get to like 50 CPU. This is totally ridicules. (If I spelled that right.) Only having 512MB of ram, I quite frankly don't like it at all. Well, a MAX of 2gb ram which I am thinking of getting. Only $40 because this computer is crap. No PCI-Ex 16 slots. NONE. Just x1. Oh well , I think I'm giving up on Norton.

AND YES I SAID DELETE NORTON.

Preferred Solution: Well, finally time to delete Norton?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hi, I uninstalled Norton from my son's dell computer running XP using install/uninstall and the computer says that is no longer there. However when I try to install Avast it keeps saying that there is already antivirus software on the computer. Can you tell me how to completely get rid of Norton so I can run other software. Thanks

I've been using norton systemworks and norton firewall since I've had a pc. Recently, the programs just completely screwed up my pc so I repartitioned my hard drive and completely reinstalled windows XP. Right now, I've installed the free version of AVG as my virus protector and comodo as my firewall.

I have spybot, ad-aware se plus, ccleaner, peerguardian2, and easy cleaner as other cleaning or protecting tools.

My question is:

is AVG and Comodo as strong as norton programs? I've only been able to find one possibly non-biased study on firewall/anti-virus software but it was a few years old. I do want the programs to use as little cpu or memory as possible (so not Norton's thing).

The only thing that bugs me about comodo is that I have to tell it everytime I click anything, what I want it to do. Also, I haven't figured out how to get it to allow utorrent to run on any specific port.

I've been up for 25 hours straight trying to research all this and I've really only come up with one definitive statement, Norton Sucks, lol. Any help would be enormously appreciated.

A:Finally Left Norton Behind

I doubt that you will find ANY unbiased product comparison on the Internet; moreover, the results depend on the version tested, and the data used to test it upon, and this can vary dramatically from one site to another.Certainly, with AVG and the anti-spyware applications, you should be confident about your protection, especially if you habitually practice security best practices, and are careful about what---and from where---you download files. As with many firewalls, there is a learning curve during which you must teach the firewall what to allow, forbid, or to ask permission each time. You can save yourself some time by using the Application Monitor; this will allow you to set permissions by application. Secondly, when you see a dialogue box pop up with an alert, and if you are reasonably confident that access should be granted, be sure to check the box "remember my answer for this application."Hope this helps,Cheers,John

woo hoo!!!

In the future im assuming cable companies will be left in the dust.. coax bandwidth is no match for fiber. (48Mbps vs 10Gbps)

Ive read they stream dish network tv through this fiber too. (competition is good)

I predict.. comcast and time warner will have to upgrade to fttc as well... if not.. sayonara.

and no.. i dont work for verizon.... Im just happy to see it.

A:The time has come for fttc (verizon has finally done it)

I've been enjoying FiOS 15mbit/2mbit service here for a few months. It really leaves Comcast in the dust, and the reliability has been perfect so far.

I just wish that they had priced the 30mbit/5mbit service a bit more reasonably, I'd love to have 5mbit uploads.

Hello all,
I'm in the research stage of building a computer. I have a few questions that I have not been able to find formerly addressed in this forum.

I'm leaning towards an AMD processor. Would a 64 bit be the way to go? Will my current software work with it? I'd like to be able to upgrade this along the way: add a video card, sound card, TV tuner, the kitchen sink. Obsolete is one thing, being trapped with old technology that can't be upgraded is another thing entirely.

I use the computer mostly for internet and some digital imagery. I don't do any gaming, but my kids do. (translation: in order to keep my kids off my computer, I don't want it souped up for gaming. they can buy their own!!)

I am currently using windows xp-sp2, an upgraded version from win 98. Should I budget for a new xp instead of installing 98, then upgrading? I think I know the answer, but I was just wondering if I could save a few bucks to spend on something a little more fun!!

Hey everyone. I've got a weird problem I am trying to get to the bottom of once and for all. I'm using an ASUS G60JX laptop w/ Windows 7 home premium 64 bit. I've got 6gb of RAM, NVIDIA GTS360M GPU and a intel core i7 processor. (1.something ghz) Basically, the laptop will freeze at weird times. The freeze is a hard freeze, you cant get out of it. There is no blue screen of death to go with it. For example, I could have Chrome open (A few tabs) and then go to start a program like Audacity, and all of a sudden, the computer just freezes. And im forced to do a hard shutdown. I believe it's safe to say this tends to happen when I'm multi-tasking. I dont recall it ever happening when not running multiple things at once. HOWEVER this problem has more to it than just that... I've had this laptop for 1.5 years now. During that time, this problem has come and gone. It has also come in a different form, where while playing any type of flash thing, the computer would freeze BUT, after waiting for a while, it would come back... which was really weird. Everything has been absolutely dandy the past 2-3 months. However, last night I decided to re install my OS, because I wanted to start back from a clean state. Everything went fine, and I've updated my computer completely. BUT now the freezing is back, in the original form of being a hard freeze, forcing me to shut down completely. I know my CPU isn't overheating in this circumstance, although it does run ho... Read more

Hi,

I used to have norton internet security on my computer. I then switched over to zone alarm because norton was using too much of my system's resources. I recently installed winpatrol. I then went under "active processes" and I found a lot of norton processes still running. I have norton ghost, but I don't think that it would require all of the processes. Here are the processes that are running that are related to symantec/norton: CCSETMGR.EXE, CCEVMGR.EXE, PIFSvc.exe, ALUSCHEDULERSVC.EXE, CCAPP.EXE, vProSvc.exe.

Thanks

C:\Program Files\TDS3 - folder

Please do this. Click here: http://www.majorgeeks.com/download3155.html to download Hijack This. It’s very important that you save it to its own folder on your hard drive, such as program files (not temporary files or the desktop), so that it can create proper back-ups and be able to restore them if necessary.

Close all open windows and open Hijack This. Click “Scan”. When the scan is finished (it only takes a second), the scan button will change to “Save Log”. Click on “Save Log” and then save it to NotePad. Click on “Edit” – “Select all” – “copy” and then “paste” into the thread.

DO NOT FIX ANYTHING YET, most items that appear in the log are harmless or even needed.

A:Win 7 does not start after Norton delete

This is for CCleaner.Do you have access to a Windows 7 CD?Bleeping Computer DOES NOT recommend the use of registry cleaners/optimizers for several reasons:? Registry cleaners are extremely powerful applications that can damage the registry by using aggressive cleaning routines and cause your computer to become unbootable. The Windows registry is a central repository (database) for storing configuration data, user settings and machine-dependent settings, and options for the operating system. It contains information and settings for all hardware, software, users, and preferences. Whenever a user makes changes to settings, file associations, system policies, or installed software, the changes are reflected and stored in this repository. The registry is a crucial component because it is where Windows "remembers" all this information, how it works together, how Windows boots the system and what files it uses when it does. The registry is also a vulnerable subsystem, in that relatively small changes done incorrectly can render the system inoperable. For a more detailed explanation, read Understanding The Registry.? Not all registry cleaners are created equal. There are a number of them available but they do not all work entirely the same way. Each vendor uses different criteria as to what constitutes a "bad entry". One cleaner may find entries on your system that will not cause problems when removed, another may not find the same entries, and still another may wa... Read more

i have a computer network at home, and ihave moved files b/w the all the time; on my main computer, i used to install norton system works which came with norton protected bin; i have since uninstalled it so there's no more protected bin on that computer (Supposedly), but when i look at how my hd are being used (with size explorer - a great tool for that), i see about 7 gigs of data in the norton protectd bin, but i cant access/delete them for some reason; normally, with size explorer, i can go into the protected bin and deleted files into the recycle bin but these are not accessible; plus, why is it there if i dont have that norton protection feature any more?

Norton, Super anti spyware and ad-aware removed a bunch of files but Norton was unable to remove one trojan vundo dll. My compter still boots up a little slow and I am unable to get into control panel, add/remove programs and my clock. Every time I double click these 3 it says "the operation has been cancelled due to restrictions, please contact your system admin." I was having problems with popups prior to running these 3 programs but I'm still not sure if there completely gone. I'll post my hi-jack this log again.

Norton AV said it found Klez on one of our work PC's. Said it couldn't remove it, offerred to quarantine it. We said ok.
Then downloaded latest virus definitions using LiveUpdate within NAV. Also downloaded the Klez tool from Symantec and ran it. It said it found and removed two Klez worms.

Next day when we turned on the PC, we got the NAV message that it had found Klez again, couldn't remove it, did we want it quarantined.

This time after saying ok, we deleted all quarantined files, ran the Klez removal tool, then re-installed Norton anti virus. Used live update to get definitions. Scanned the PC. Said we were clean.

Today, turn the pc on, ............ same message that we have Klez,
but it can't be deleted.

Can you clue me in as to what step we've missed?
Thanks,
Kimmer

Since my last install of Norton, I noticed the name of my recycle bin has been changed to Norton Protected Recycle Bin. When I "empty recycle bin" there is an option to "empty Norton protected files". When I right-click on the latter option, I'm a little confused. It tells me the number of protected files on a couple of drives and the options are "purge yours" (their all mine), "purge all" or "cancel". I've held back from purging anything b/c I'm not familiar w/ this Norton option. My GUESS is that if it's in my recycle bin, then it's trash.

A response from anyone w/ more experience than me (which isnt' much in this instance) is greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

A:Norton Recycle Bin - What is it and can I delete stuff in it?

Easy one to answer. The "protected" files are just another chance to restore the files that you have trashed. You now have to delete them twice to really get rid of them. Untill you delete the protected files you can still restore them.

Hi,
i run windows xp, have norton internet security 2005 (up-to-date), and various other spyware scanners. when norton antispy runs a scan, it finds the file C:\WINDOWS\system32\explorer.dll, and states that it is a hacktool. however when it tries to delete it, it always fails. i can't delete it manually, presumably because it is in use. i have searched through my running processes and cant find anything illegitimate, however im not that experienced! in the last few days, another problem has occurred, Explorer.exe keeps crashing, rusulting in that annoying apology from microsoft asking me to tell them about it. i would REALLY appreciate some help, ive exhausted every way i can think of to cure this.

Once again a huge please and thank you.

A:Norton finds keylogger but can't delete

Download CWShredder and run it. Click on 'I Agree' button if you agree with it. Click on 'Fix' (it will automatically fix anything it finds for you) and OK. If it asks if you want to delete a certain random file, choose No and post that filename here. Let it finish the scan and then hit Next and Exit.

Download and install Spybot S&D. Run Spybot and click on the 'Search for Updates' button. Install any updates that are available. Next click on the 'Check for Problems' button. Let it run the scan. If it finds something, check all those in RED and hit the Fix Selected Problems button. Exit Spybot. If you keep getting the DSO Exploit entries, even after you updated Windows and fixed them, then download the Spybot DSO Exploit Fix and install it over the current Spybot installation.

Please download Ad-aware SE and install it if you don't have it already. Make sure it's the newest version and check for any updates before running it. Also go here to get the plug-in for fixing VX2 variants. To run this tool, go into Ad-aware->Add-ons and select VX2 Cleaner. Then click Run Tool and OK to start it. If it's clean, it will say Status System Clean. Otherwise, you will have to click on the Clean button to remove the VX2 infection. Also make sure to customize the settings in Ad-aware for better scan results. Run the scan and fix everything that it finds.

It said I could not delete it. I am running McAfee Total Antivirus but as you can see above it still says that I am using Norton Security, Disabled. Norton Security even loads at startup but does not show up in the startup menu. When I click on the Norton icon I get a message saying I must reload Norton Security. How can I completely remove Norton from my PC?

I know this sounds crazy, but I would just like to eliminate all possibilities. On Dec 18th, I activated the Yahoo mail scan on my Norton Internet Security 2005. This required me to enter my yahoo mail account password, which I did with some trepidation, but this is Norton, so I thought it would be ok.
The next morning I sent an email, left my computer for a couple of hours and when I returned I found my log in session had expired - there is only me here using the computer. I re-logged in to get the message that my ID was not taken, was I trying to register? In disbelief I tried again and again, the same message came up. I then went to my other mail account ( which isnt registered on the Norton) sent myself an email, and it was returned because the account didnt exist.
At this stage I was panicking, I checked my non yahoo account to make sure yahoo hadn't deleted me, nothing. I then re-applied for the ID, which I now have but as a new account , but obviously I lost all the contents of the old one. I also have a 360 page with that account which I cannot now access, in fact I can't access any part of 360, although the page is still there. I have also tried from another computer.
I won't go into the reams of correspondence I have had, or tried to have, with Yahoo about this. I'm assuming as they are seeming to look into it that yahoo didn't close the account, so is it possible that something went awry with my Norton and it deleted /caused to be deleted my yahoo mail account?? A:Can Norton Delete An Email Account?

I've never heard of this before. Norton deleting an Email account.. It could be a complete coincidence that yahoo purged old names and yours got caught in it by an error. But that seems unlikely. Maybe try getting in contact with the main yahoo webmaster. Im sorry to hear about the loss though, for any matter, i wouldnt recommend NAV for protection anymore. Im sorry for the lack of links, but im at school right now. I would use Kaspersky anti virus, Panda Titanium, or AVG Free anti virus. Quite honestly, it should be common sense to email users what's a potential threat, and what's not. If you see something you dont know or know you dont need, dont download it, its as simple as that. This isnt directed at you, but sitll i know alot of people that accept unknown files from people they've never heard of before. Anyway, go with one of the 3 i talked about, and try getting in contact with the main yahoo webmaster. See what he says.

Symantec website asked me to do the regedit in safemode.

Then it said to Navigate to the key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run

In the right pane, delete the value:
"PowerManager"="%windir%\svchost.exe"

This value wasn't displayed.

A:W32.jeefo< Norton Found>Cant Delete?

Hi there....

You will need to remove NEW.NET.This is best done via Add/Remove.In some cases removing it can cause problems connecting to the net, so download WinsockFix now and keep it handy.

If there is no entry, download and run the New.net uninstaller from here http://www.newdotnet.com/removal.html. Reboot afterwards.

Download WinsockFix
Should you have problems.....

1.) UnZip WinsockFix.zip (Pay close attention to where the file is extracted to.)
2.) Run WinsockFix.exe.
3.) Click the Fix button.

I see you are not running only one Service Pack. Please save and run the download. It will copy the results to your clipboard. Will you copy and paste them back here please.
