Windows check disk stopped at "xy file record processed"

Q: Windows check disk stopped at "xy file record processed"

Hi,

I doubt the bad sector on hard disk, so I made check disk through the Windows 7 (not in cmd mode). In processing check disk stops at stage "2154545 file record processed" (2154545 is random number), and I wait for 2 hours but without any results. Why check disk stopped at this point? What next to do? Thanks!

Preferred Solution: Windows check disk stopped at "xy file record processed"

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hello and welcome Shark Developer mate can you get into safe mode? If so try the chkdsk again.
Power up and tap F8 and when in safe mode try again using this
Disk Check if the first method doesn't work then try option 2.
Post back what happens.

Hi everybody,

The title says it all. My dad was using the computer to watch some videos online when Mozilla Firefox froze. Then I tried to get into the task manager using Ctrl+Alt+Del and that wouldn't work. Tried right clicking the taskbar and going into task manager and that didn't work either. So I just shoved the power button to turn off the computer, and turned it back on. It hung on the "Starting Windows" screen for a while, then it launched into check disk. It scanned for a bit, then said "File record segment 2xxx is unreadable" and it kept going until about 58%, then it just kept giving "File record segment 3xxxx is unreadable" and kept going up until "File record segment 44139 is unreadable". Then it said something about index errors and the computer reboot. Now it says "Reboot and select proper boot device or insert boot media in selected boot device and press a key". Does anyone have any insight?

A:check disk is giving me "File record segement xxxxx is unreadable"

So I threw in my windows 7 CD to try and repair the startup, but it didn't work. Now the computer rebooted and is going through check disk again. I already switched the SATA ports on the motherboard. Is there anything anyone can suggest?

Yesterday when I switch on my computer, it automatic diskcheck on my E disk. I have 3 HDD, which is C: (My main partition, installed Windows on this HDD), D: is for all my game files (Installed games) and E: is for all my music, movies, game installer, software etc.

So back to the point, when I switch on my computer, and get to the "Windows is Starting", and it stuck right there for about 5-10 minutes. Firstly, I have no patient so I restated the computer, and second or third time also have the same problem. So I choose to wait patiently, after 5-10 minutes, it have a black screen for about 1 to a few minutes, then it started the disk check on my E drive.

Once the process started ( I have total 234240 file record as shown on the disk check ) and continue to file record 800, it started to give me message stated "File record segment 800 is unreadable, File record segment 801 is unreadable" and so on, and sometimes it continue to go smoothly without the message, but not long or sooner it will appear again. Almost the whole process I get these message which worried me, and I wonder if my hard disk is failing badly and unable to recover.
It continues to finish the process and attempt to fix the bad sector. And after that it successfully log onto Windows, so I can use it normally again.

But I notice my E: HDD cannot access and the "My Computer" screen is loading very slow, and sometimes goes unrespond. One thing very weird is that after I few hours ... Read more

A:Hard disk is failing? Error message"File record segment is unreadable"

The "File record segment xxx is unreadable" error is an indication of failing hard drive. You should backup the data from this drive before it's too late.

Next, run some diagnostic testing on the failing hard drive; most HDD manufacturers have the diagnostic software available from their website. Software from Seagate will work with most brand.

If this drive would be mine, I'd just get a new one, the drive certainly will not get better...

Hi, all!

Yesterday I went to run a check disk by going to My Computer, then right-clicking on the C drive, then choosing "Tools." I checked both of those options that come up in the dialog box, then rebooted my computer. Now, I've done this before, and it would reboot, and then eventually go to a blue screen and show the check disk process doing it's thing.

However, this time, it simply gave a very small message saying something to the effect that it was checking disk, then it says it cannot access the file, then it says done checking disk.

So, I ran a sfc /scannow and it asked for my disc, which I put in, and I let that run. I tried the check disk again, but same small error message. So, I looked in the system error logs, and there are a couple of error messages about the sfc that I just ran. It says that there are several .dll files that could not be copied to the DLL cache. It gives the same "specific error code" for all three errors. The code is: 0x000004c7 All three say that they are needed for system stability.

If you need the three actual files, I can type them out. They were all three quite long, so I didn't type them out, but if they are needed, I will.

I don't know if those errors from the sfc are related to my check disk not working? The thing is, everytime, now, that I reboot, it will pause at the blue screen and try to do the check disk, but says it can't. After that, it goes to the welcome screen.

So I clicked on it, and then it says ''Windows can't check disk while in use, do you want to check for hard disk errors the next time you start your computer?''. So I agree to it by clicking ''Schedule disk check''. So then I restart my computer & and it does nothing at all. I reformatted my computer about 4 weeks ago. Every week I've been doing routine maintenance. Ad/spy/virus check, follow by cleaning of Internet temp files, cookies etc etc.

After that I would do a scan disk and the last 4 weeks has been ok, it completed to phase 3.

Now for some reason it doesn't complete phase 2.

Anyway ideas?

Windows XP, Service pack 3 installed.

Hmmmm? I just cleared the cache, cookies, etc on firefox which is the default browser I use. Clicked scan disk and it completed pass phase 3.

What the is the relationship between clearing cache, cookies etc that makes scan disk work?. Because it seems I have to clear all those date before scan disk can be completed. Why?

I would have thought clearing cookies, history temporary files via control panel > Internet options > general clears all the data but it seems I have to clear it through firefox too? Why?

Another thing. As I managed to complete scan disk. I decided to re check it just incase, at this point I was surfing the net reading some emails, etc and scan disk did not complete.

Hi All,

Let me get right to the point...

Background:
I just changed my hard disk because my old one's integrity is at 2% to a point where I couldn't even load Windows. So, I reinstalled everything: Win 7 Ultimate x32 and all other third-party software that I use. All the installation process worked smoothly... no error or warning of any kind. I always have 2 users set up on my computer: one is the (system's predefined) Administrator; and another is a user with near-admin privileges (a power user) that I use for daily operations and it has almost all access to my data partition drive (I set up the security permission for this user on the data drive).

Problem:
The problem started after I created the second user and set up the security permission for this user. I can read, write, modify, even delete a file on the data partition, but I cannot move that same file to another folder still within the data partition to which this user has access. The error was always: "Windows Explorer stopped working" and it had to refresh/restart.

Solutions tried (based on my browsing similar "Windows Explorer stopped working" problems in this forum):
- First, I tried giving the user group(s) (the groups that this user belong to: Users, Power Users, etc.) the permissions that I wanted -- same problem.
- Second, I tried giving the actual user, instead of just the user group, the permissions that I wanted -- same problem.
- I tried giving the user full control/permission -... Read more

So I have this weird thing happening in my relatively fresh install of Windows 10.
Whenever I search for "Check for Updates" or "Windows Update settings" on the search box of the start menu, I get the results that I want but if I press enter or try to click on those results nothing happens.. As far as I know I can click all others search results but those, and maybe others related to windows update.

I can still get updates by going to Settings>Update & Security though.

In my other computers this works fine, and as far as I can tell all the updates are done.
From what I've searched around other people seemed to have a similar issue where they couldn't acess the settings at all which isn't my case. Still I tried the sfc/ scannow that a lot of users seemed to recommend but no results.

.............. Still I tried the sfc/ scannow that a lot of users seemed to recommend but no results. .....................

Please clarify what did you mean by "no results".

When sfc /scannow is completed, it will give you one of the following 3 reports....................(paraphrasing)

1. No integrity violation.
2. Found corrupted files and repair is successful.
3. Found corrupted files but unable to repair some of them.

Hi,

Now when I go to do that it goes through all the checks, "inserts index entries" etc, and then at the end it says "**** file SDs/SIDS processed" and just stays at that point and doesn't go any further. Has it just frozen or crashed or does this just take a long time? Should I be looking at getting a new hard drive, or is there anything else I can do? For now, if I skip the chkdsk and log in my laptop seems to work fine with no issues. Is it just a matter of time before it stops working completely?

Thanks

Welcome to Seven Forums tezz.

Two things to try:

This may help, run the steps outlined in this tutorial, Option Two, and reboot the system:
SFC /SCANNOW Command - System File Checker
You may get this result:

Code:
Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files and successfully repaired
them. Details are included in the CBS.Log windir\Logs\CBS\CBS.log. For
example C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CBS.log
The system file repair changes will take effect after the next reboot.
Or a message that no integrity violations were found.
Or that Windows Resource Protection found errors it cannot repair. If one more run won't fix it, we'll try another thing.

Some hardware tests to run.

Hard drive(s)test(s):
Pick one for your HDD brand or use Seatools.
7 Free Hard Drive Testing Software Tools
RAM (memory) test:
This will require memtest on a bootable CD or USB stick.

I try this too:

Use Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image followed by these switches:

/ScanHealth: This checks for component store corruption and records that corruption to the C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CBS.log but no corruption is fixed using this switch. This is useful for logging what, if any, corruption exists. Use Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /ScanHealth. This could take 10-15 minutes.
/CheckHealth: This checks to see if a component corruption marker is already present in the registry. This is merely a way to see if corruption currently exists. Think of it as a read-only CHKDSK. Use Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /CheckHealth. This could take less than a minute.
/RestoreHealth: This checks for component store corruption, records the corruption to C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CBS.log and FIXES the corruption using Windows Update. This operation takes 15 mins or more depending on the level of corruption. Use Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth.

But I get this

Quote:

And I cant not use /CheckHealth and /RestoreHealth because all I get is:

Hi all,

Sorry to repeat a question I see a lot of instances of, but none of those seem to be addressing my problem correctly.

I have not done anything new to my computer in recent days, so this problem has caught me off guard (I see most instances of this problem come after upgrading to Windows 7, I have had Win 7 installed for a while now).

Here is a summary of my problem:
1) My computer recently got stuck on the "Starting Windows Screen." So I manually held the power button to reboot.
2) On reboot, it said there was a need to run a startup repair, which I did. Everything checked fine, except for the last one which said "System Volume on Disk is Corrupted," which it claimed to have successfully fixed.
3) After rebooting from repair, the system gets stuck on "Starting Windows Screen" for a good 10-15 minutes, after which it runs a registry check. After it completes that I get hopeful -- but the screen then gets stuck on an all black screen with just the mouse cursor and nothing more.
4) Additional note: Attempting to start the computer on "safe mode" leads safe mode startup to become stalled on "DRIVERS\CLASSPNP.SYS"
5) The lastest attempt to repair yielded this message: "Startup repair cannot repair this computer automatically.

A:Stuck on "Starting Windows", Repair Shows "System Volume on Disk is Corrupted"

Hi Stan, Hopefully I can help you out....or at least lead you in the right direction. From my experience, the symptoms you are suggesting sound like perhaps a dying Hard drive.

1. Do you have the windows 7 boot disks that came with your computer or when you bought the Operating System? If so, you could try and insert one of those and boot from it, and attempt to repair the installation. (this won't affect your data, only the windows system files).

2. If that doesn't fix it, you could try a fresh reinstall of windows 7, and see if that works.

3. If neither of those work, its likely that because of the fact that when windows is repairing itself, it is generally putting copies of its system files in the same physical location on your disk. Because your disk is obviously not completely dead, ie....its still loading to the windows 7 startup screen, its just copying files to the bad sectors on your hard drive and gets stuck when loading. This is especially my guess because you said Safe mode is having same problems, even after attempting to repair. In the past, I've tried and salvage a disk by reformatting it and only leaving on partitions which do not contain the bad clusters. This takes some time, and some guess work.....and really this is only a "bandaid" fix because once the disk has bad clusters, its only a matter of time before these things give out. You wouldn't want to trust your important data on it anyways....

I hope this leads you in ... Read more

I have read some strings that indicate it may be a compatibility issue between the service pack 1 and vista but the service pack came with the computer and it has been working fine until recently. I am at loss what to try next. Has anyone using Vista Home Home Premium experience anything like this!!!

My wife has a two month old Lenovo ideapad with Windows 7. We are now getting alerts that the D partition is near full. Is this system taking multipul backups of the harddrive C and storing them all? What are my best options to have a safe backup, but not overloading the D partition? I do see in; Computer>System>Device Manager>Disk Drives>D Drive General tab that there are two options at the bottom.
option one, (not checked in my case) "Compress this drive to save disk space".
Option two, (checked) "Allow files on this drive to have contents indexed in addition to file properties"
Would selecting option one solve my problem? If this system is saving a snapshot of D over and over, it will only be a matter of time when option one will be overcome.
SO, I would think that there has to be a setting that will let partition D delete older backups...right?

Would it be a combination of selecting option one and changing a setting that would enable older backups to be automaticaly removed?

A:Action Center "Check backup disk space" alert

Welcome to the forum
If your D drive is made for backup's only, you can delete all files exept the newest one.
But it's advised to make backup's on an external USB drive and change the frequency of backup's to your files and olso for images to your OS.

What can I do next? I have a new hard drive put in and still getting this?

You must install WIndows onto the new drive -- it is blank when it arrives from the factory.

Hello everyone, new member here. First off, thanks for accepting my registration.

Anyways, every time I try to schedule a "Check Disk" it NEVER starts on a restart...

I ALREADY did the "sfc /scannow" command on the cmd prompt.
It did NOT fix my solution. In fact it said it was UNABLE to fix some problems.
I have attached a file of my "SFC scan log". Inside it says it was unable to fix "Chkdsk.exe" Go figure

Alright, just some extra information. I also think my computer is confused of itself . I mean, it seems to not know if its a 64 bit or a 86 bit!

I was told from someone to install a hotfix for "Chkdsk.exe" here
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/975778/en-us

But it did NOT work. I attempted to install BOTH 64 bit AND 86 bit hotfixes, and YES they were BOTH windows 7 (Chkdsk.exe) hotfixes.

My system specs:

-Toshiba Qosmio X505 Laptop-

Windows 7 -64 bit- (Yes it SAYS 64 bit but I've tried to install other kinds of hotfixes for both 64 and 86 bits and none of them worked!)

Intel Core i5

4gb Ram

Nvidia Geforce GTS 360M

If any of that matters anyway! Thank you guys, I really hope there's a computer pro out there that can fix my problem. I've joined many forums and had no fix. I don't want to do a complete reinstall of Windows 7 mainly because it takes long and I KNOW there has to be another way. I'll only do that as a last resort. I have Windows 7 Ultimate x64

The other day I was afk while listening to loud music from my computer.
Suddenly the speakers began screaming in a high pitch and when I got to my computer it had frozen.
I tried to reboot it, but it simply froze at the Windows loading screen with the floating balls of light and the text: "Starting Windows".
I have also tried booting from the Windows 7 Installation DVD, but it freezes at the loading screen once again.

I then tried to use the Startup Repair Tool, only to find Windows freezing at the loading screen again.

When trying to reboot in safe mode, it freezes again, just after having loaded "disk.sys"

These are the things I have tried so far:
- I have run memory tests using Memtest86.
- I have run hard disk drive tests using SeaTools
- No errors were found.
- I removed the sound card from the MB, with same boot result.
*EDIT*
- I have reset the BIOS
- I booted with 2GB of RAM instead of my standard 4GB

Anyone who can think of other things I should try?

I am running Windows XP SP3, fully updated, on an Acer lap top PC.

I have several folders full of .mp3's and want to see the bit rate and duration. To do this I right click on a column heading and select "Bit rate". I then click on "More..." so I can get to "Duration", and I select that one too.

The two new columns appear, but the format of the "Duration" column appears to be "hours:minutes", so I see "00:04" or "00:03" for most .mp3's, when what I want to see is 'hours:minutes:seconds", e.g. "00:03:45".

This also happens for video files (.avi files), e.g. all my episodes of "Heroes" (sad, I know) have a duration of "00:42" instead of "00:42:xx".

Here are two pictures showing the problem with the .mp3's. The first is of Explorer showing the Duration as "Hours:Minutes":

The second picture is of the properties window of the first .mp3 in the list above:

I copied some .mp3 files to another (old) PC on my home network, and it displayed the duration field correctly:

Also, the properties window correctly shows the duration also:

I'm not the only person to have this problem. I received a private message from a member of another forum where I posted about this problem several weeks ago. That person also has the same problem with the duration field.

Hiya, I could use a little help resolving what should be a simple problem. It's really a long story, but to skip to the important part, I'll just recount this little tale:

I wanted to delete some files off of an old external hard drive to make space for some new stuff. It didn't matter, since the files I was deleting had been long since copied to a new drive. However, Vista, in its infinite wisdom, told me I couldn't delete the files, and it was for my own good. I politely said, "okay, Vista! Thanks for keeping me honest!"

But then I muttered, "I already have a mother" under my breath, and proceeded to go behind Vista's back and turn off User Account Control so I could delete the files anyway. Well, I knew that wasn't the best idea, so I immediately turned UAC back on afterwards, but it was too late. Vista caught me, and after the second restart, smote me with a problem I'd seen once before: nearly every program on my computer was said to have been closed after it "encountered a problem" or some nonsense, and when restarted again, the disk checker was run, found numerous problems, and did whatever it had to do to go about fixing them all.

Now I'm not sure what all that was about, because everything seems to be running okay now, save for one minor thing. That little "click" sound you get when navigating windows explorer was nowhere to be heard. I tried another restart and another disk check, b... Read more

Hey guys.

Basically my pc restarted by itself out of the blue and gave me a "No system Disk, insert system disk then press enter" message at POST screen.

This is a brand new HDD, but anyway I manually restarted like 10 times before it booted up properly. But Checkdisk stated just before the login screen so I let it run, but It froze at "51%". So I had to manually restart again. Now I cancel the checkdisk every time but when I switch my pc and want to use it again later, checkdisk always appears before the login screen and im scared to let it run coz It might freeze again!

And I ran a HD tune error scan and that also froze my pc.

A:*RESOLVED* Media Center "Tuner Not Found" error, "Receiver service has stopped"

Okay, I resolved the first two issues, Tuner error and ehrecvr error. It had to do with multiple Admin user accounts on my computer. My computer was originally set up with a user Robert Baker with full privileges as administrator. I then also set up a MediaCenter account with full privilidges. For whatever reason the MediaCenter account has access to EVERY action on the computer except starting the ehrecvr service.1.  First set Media Center Service Launcher to log on at NT Authority    Services > Right-Click Windows Media Center Service Launcher > Properties > Log On tab > Log On As 'This account: ' > Type " NT AUTHORITY/LocalService " > Click Apply > General tab > Start service.2. I then set the Media Center Scheduler Service AND Media Center Receiver Service to log on as my other admin account. Same as above but with other account credentials and started the services.3. Reboot and no ehrecvr errors. Since this was a good sign I tried WMC and was able to set up my TV fine.I STILL, however, get the "Upgrade in progress" message when I open Media Center. Anyone know how to fix that? I've run setup again and can't get rid of it.

I tried to post in the check disk tutorial:

Check Disk - chkdsk[11]=Performance%20Maintenance

But that post is now closed.

As a fan of Brink's tutorials, here are some comments - helpful comments, I hope

-------------------------------------------

1) I've been running the command

CHKDSK C: /f /r

for years.

Your tutorial gives the impression (to me, anyway), that only one option can be used at one time.

-------------------------------------------

2) I just noticed that there is a "Check Disk" command from within Properties > Tools

(That proves how quickly I see things )

I gave it a try with both options checked. First for the C: drive, then for the D: drive.

In both cases, I restarted to allow the command to work. In both cases, a black screen appeared, with the disk LED working constantly. Each drive took about 20-30 minutes (I did not check the exact time.) I assumed things were happening, as with CHKDSK.

Then the startup continued to the login screen. There were no messages, So I assumed that everything was OK.

Then I saw your note in this tutorial, "This method does not always run chkdsk when the computer restarts on some computers."

So, my question is: Did the check work or did it not work?

Your tutorial does not say "If it works this will happen..., whereas if it doesn't work, this will happen...

It might be helpful to tell the user what to expect and what not to expect

Hello,
I am getting the following error when moving files on the same drive or from one to another:

"Error Moving File or Folder
Cannot remove folder (insert folder name here): The directory is not empty."

This is fairly common (once or twice a month) and it occurs usually with folders containing many subfolders when being moved by explorer gui "Move the selected items", or ctrl-x, ctrl-v . Repeated attempts through the same process seems to move the folders, but the errors increase as the concentration of stubborn folders increases.

There are no event viewer logs corresponding to these errors. (eventvwr.msc: system, or application)

I would have thought this would be a common problem, but extensive searches came up with nothing... so either it is rare, untroubling to others, extremely easy to fix, or my search queries suck. =)
I am going to run Checkdisk to make sure all is well there, and I will repost the likely failure.

A:"Error moving file or folder" "directory is not empty" one file left

Occasionally when I am deleting a file, it is difficult, I have to go through process explorer, search for the thread that is strangely(?) associated with that file in explorer (no reasonable dependencies could be linked, nor is the file being viewed), and kill the thread before deletion.

any thoughts?

Thanks =)
