Lenovo G560 - BIOS and CPU Update

Q: Lenovo G560 - BIOS and CPU Update

Hello everybody. I have got an old lenovo G560 that I wish to upgrade a bit as the laptop is in perfect condition and it is mostly used for browsing and some light software developement. My Lenovo G560 Specifications are as follows: Operating System: Microsoft Windows 10 Professional (x64) Build 17763.195Motherboard Chipset: Intel HM55 (IbexPeak-M DH)CPU Brand Name: Intel(R) Core(TM) i3 CPU M 330 @ 2.13GHzVideo Chipset: NVIDIA GeForce 310MTotal Memory Size: 4 GBytesBIOS Version: 29CN18WW(V1.06) I found out that I can upgrage my CPU and I got an i5 520M - it fits absolutely perfectly into the motherboard, however, when I start the laptop I get black screen - not even the Lenovo Bios splash screen. Fan and other led's are operating. I have tried removing ram modules - no success. Here is a list of supported CPU's that I have found on this very same community: ? Intel Core i5-520M (2.40GHz, 3MB L3, DDR3-1066, PGA)? Intel Core i5-430M (2.26GHz, 3MB L3, DDR3-1066, PGA)? Intel Core i3-350M (2.26GHz, 3MB L3, DDR3-1066, PGA)? Intel Core i3-330M (2.13GHz, 3MB L3, DDR3-1066, PGA) My guess is I have to update my BIOS to fix this since I currently run a very old BIOS Version: 29CN18WW(V1.06) I have spent hours searching the Internet for updates but without any success. Would you please guide me on when to find the update files to a newer version? Thank you in advance!

Preferred Solution: Lenovo G560 - BIOS and CPU Update

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hello I have a dead G560. It ran linux perfectly ok until the battery ran flat. Now, when I press the start button I hear the cd being engaged and the cpu fan start. I also get a white screen. Nothing else happens. The recovery button does not work. I cannot shut down the machine in any way other than by removing the battery. I have purchased a new battery and feel I need to rebuild the machine starting with a BIOS reflash. I will need to do this using a USB or CD I guess. Can anybody take me through the steps please? Thank you Bob

I have this G560 with BIOS version 2.02. The Lenovo site says their downloads are only for versions 2.03 and later; to update earlier versions you have to use "local support." (Which is ridiculous.) I saw a post somewhere where someone had version 1.05 and was advised to go ahead and download the latest version; he did it and his machine refused to start after that.Does anyone know how I can get BIOS updates for this machine? Thanks a lot.

Hello everyone, I have big problem right now with my computer. I've installed 4gb samsung ddr3 ram in my lenovo g560 and left 2gb stock module and now my computer runs much slower with 6gb of ram, much slower than with stock 3gb. I've installed clean windows 7 64bit, but problem is still there. I've found that bios update solved problem for most people but thing is that on lenovo site, there is only 2.15 version available but I can't installed it directly on my 1.06 version, what should I do now? thanks in advance,Best regards

Hi All,

After trying everything I decided to come here and post.

I have a Lenovo G560 Laptop. Usually I put my machine in Hibernation mode. Because Whenever I turn it of it take multiple power offs to restart and working normal

In Hibernation I boots in seconds. So my machine go the windows 7 update I rebooted the system this time It never came up.
When ahead with last option FORMAT.

My system booted now it was like dead slow and I was totally annoyed. After that I thought it my the processor which might over heat open the back panel cleaned it up good. Well again it was same. I opened it again however after this it didn't even boot
Not even the bios screen screen didn't power on.

Other than that I also noticed that now the HDD LED was not blinking was off.

Fine I did some internal hardware check no good.

I have a SATA to USB converter I connected the Laptop Hard disk via the SATA to USB to my other MSI (LOVE IT) laptop
So when I power it on my MSI detects the System drive which I believe holds the MBR and later my MSI too get hungs as soon as I power off the HDD my MSI works fine...
I suspect issue with my HDD of G560 I have lots of data on it I need to recover any solution ?

Test the Lenovo's hard drive with the drive manufacturer's DOS version diagnostic software which is an ISO cd-image file from which you can make a bootable CD with IMGBurn (see below for links). Boot your Lenovo from that CD and the testing tool will automatically open. Select the drive and run a "long test' if that's available.

Links for drive makers' diagnostic software (remember, you need a DOS version): http://www.tacktech.com/display.cfm?ttid=287

I have a Lenovo G560 which key "one key recovery" is not working. It is a used computer I bought. If I go into disk management, I can see that there is a hidden partition. How do I feature to work again.Yours sincerely Preben

A:One key recovery key on Lenovo G560

hi Preben,

Welcome to the Forums.

If you're running on Win7 on the G560, can you try these steps:

1. Open a command prompt as administrator and type:
  diskpart
  list disk
sel disk 1 (where disk 1 is the primary drive)
  list part
sel part 4 (where partition 4 is the hidden recovery partition)
  set id=12
  exit

 - Sample image

2. After exiting diskpart, try running OneKey Recovery again and observe.

In addition, try also creating a recovery disc (see this article) as an alternative way on restoring the machine to factory settings.

Let me know if this works for you.

Regards

hi bill27,

Welcome to Lenovo Community Forums!

Yes this is Compatible,
Both has the same Chipset type from Lenovo Configuration H55,
and both has the same Socket type support

Intel Pentium P6100

Intel i3-380M

This is the Lenovo FRU number for the part

My only concern about this is that the I3-380M posted in your link is not an OEM but a retail version.
You should find a I3-380M that has a Lenovo FRU tag 102000939 for sure compatibility

Try Searching online about this Lenovo FRU number and check where you can purchase it.

Hope this helps
Cheers!

I can suggest you to check the drivers from manufacturer's website and check for related drivers of your laptop. So far, I can't give a hand or idea about Lenovo.

Just be resourceful in a way we can help ourselves for some drivers that we need especially when manufacturer matters.

And let us know what you have done with your installation.

I had to fix a friends laptop today from the phone because she lives in another city. She has Windows7 and apparently the machine was freezing quite often. Checking her config.sys to find out what was loading at start up I found she had 8 entries with the manufacturer marked as "Unknown". Told her to remove the check mark from them and re boot and it became worst.

Searching on the web I found how to re install Windows7 on a Lenovo G560 from the D:\ drive and we went through the process and all looks fine so far.

But now she has an icon in the taskbar which says "Drive D: has not enough space" and checking the drive I found that out of 30GB space there is only 3MB free space. All files on that drive looks like they are Windows files and she has no private files in there.

Anyone knows why this icon appeared and what I have to do to fix it?

hi Darkman1969,

Welcome to Lenovo Community Forums!

The posts you read are correct,
Most OEM have a list of pre-configured supported hardware and is locked in the BIOS
as per your System Maintenance Manual here are what's should work

Flashing the BIOS is not recommended as any wrong move may brick the system and void the warranty also rendering the system not working.

Best Regards

So it's not a huge problem, but after updating the BIOS on my T480 from V1.17 to the current release V1.24 the Lenovo Vantage tool still reports (on lower right corner of screen) that I have BIOS V1.17 installed. The update installed normally and I have verified that V1.24 is installed Boot --> F1 --> reviewed installed version. I thought you guys at Lenovo might want to check it out. I do have the current version of Vantage installed (latest version offered by the Microsoft Store for Win 10 Pro): V 4.27.32.0

Hello everyone! I ama new user and i am coming up with this post as I couldn`t find any kind of solution for my problem.Recently I decided to do a reinstallation of my operating system, which also previously was Windows 7 Ultimate (x64). The installation went as usual, and after finishing it I went on to install all the latest drivers from the Lenovo site, for my product. When getting close to installing almost all the drivers i`ve needed, i stumbled upon a new version of the BIOS amnd the drivers and sfotware recommended for my laptop, by the producer. So i proceeded to install the upgrade, restarted the computer when it prompted me to do so, but after the so-called restart the laptop did not boot up as usual. At first it was telling me to not do anything as the BIOS is being flashed and then it was telling me something about some sort of image processing, things that i did not understand at the time (i have never encountered anything like that). After that my screen turned black. I have not done anything for a few couple of minutes as i thought it was supposed to be like that, but then i just force shut it down and unplugged the AC adapter. When trying to boot it all up again, the only thing i got was a black screen and nothing else. After doing a little bit of research it appears that, somehowm i`ve managed to corrupt the bios on my laptop or something, and nothing else would work at this point. I tried to remove the BIOS battery and the ram and then put them all back, trye... Read more

Hi. I have a Lenovo B50-30 mode 80ES. It was set to require a password on startup starting with a capital "A". While experiencing charging problems, amongst other things, I updated the BIOS to 9CCN35WW, downloaded from the Lenovo support site. Since updating, the laptop no longer asks for a password on startup (No big deal, I applied a windows password), however, when pressing F2 to access the BIOS (which I need to do, the F keys are the wrong way round), it asks for a password, When pressing to strike a capital A, the laptop beeps and doesnt enter it. It wont accept capital letters anymore, therefore it wont accept the pre BIOS update password. I have referred the laptop to Lenovo service, including returning the laptop, and they have been nothing short of useless. They said they couldnt repair it under warranty because of "Marks, cracks, inappropriate treatment" and it would cost 255 for a replacement system board. I really couldnt see why I should pay for an issue created by their support system, so I asked them to return it unrepaired. Upon arrival, the laptop was immaculate, so I dont know what damage they were referring to. Is it possible to downgrade the BIOS to a pre update revision, to change the password and then reset it to one the new BIOS approves of? Thankyou in advance.

I have a Lenovo G560 with an Intel HM55 Express Chipset, version 2.12 of BIOS, a Pentium P6200 CPU, and no dedicated graphics. I also have a brain-full of forum knowledge, lol. My EXACT question is this... Can I upgrade my CPU to an Intel Core i7-640M? According to my research, this processor is the fastest, best processor that is compatible with my computer's chipset, and I understand that some have already tried to use this processor only to find that it does not work. But since it is a semi-new year, and I'm not even sure if I have the latest BIOS yet, I want to try to upgrade in order to have a long term laptop. I've seen on some forums that the CPU didn't work, but the forums were dated. I've also seen that the lenovo G560 sometimes came with a dedicated graphics card from AMD/NVidia (although my PC does not have this), could this be a possible compatibility issue? Lenovo says the G560 can accept an i5-520M. But I don't see a reason it shouldn't work, except for a possible BIOS whitelist. But even then, I have seen on another dated forum that lenovo does whitelist WLAN cards, but not CPUs.

Hi cmccan  ,

Welcome to the Community Forums.

The best people to decode the error code is with technical support as it would need a tool for it.
If you do notice slow performance , clicking noises, freezing , BSOD as they are symptoms of a failing harddrive.
S.M.A.R.T. test is an integrity checker to alarm user to back up their files before the harddrive crashes.

LSC have high sensitivity to SMART testing as other similar diagnostics may not be able to detect this early.
Click on highlighted links for reference that can help you further.

Basically , if you are starting to have symptoms as indicated , back up all your files and take time to create your recovery media as needed . Call in technical support for possible service .

So, can anyone please tell me what does it really mean ? I can see that it says it's 120% charged which is overcharging, isn't it ? I'm not really into electrics, so please help me - how am I supposed to get my laptop battery working if it isn't dead ?

A:Lenovo G560 battery charges but laptop won't run on it

The battery contacts could be corroded by the spilled water. It takes time for this corrosion to develop so that's why the time that the laptop worked. The water could have affected other internal circuits too over time. The laptop needs to be opened up and inspected

Hi I own a Lenovo G560 with an Intel Pentium CPU. I upgraded to Windows 10, and it worked fine for about a year. After I deleted a few viruses and a few garbage programs off the machine, the battery refused to charge past 87%. I have heard to check Lenovo Power Manager, but there is no such software on the system. Is there any other solution I could try?

My Lenove G560 has this unusual problem. When I turn it on my screen is divided into 4 sections, all showing the same thing. I tried downloading and installing the latest Intel HD graphics drivers and it still doesn't help. I checked my display frequency and it is set to 60Hz and my color depth is still 32 bits. The only thing that has changed is my screen resolution to 800 x 600.

Any ideas on why this is happening?

My Lenovo G560 was dropped and the screen unfortunately cracked. Ordered a new matching screen and installed very carefully. Turned computer on and I get the initial "Lenovo" screen with the option to go into BIOS (i.e. press F2, F12, etc.). Then, after that I get only a blinking cursor in the upper left of the screen. I let it sit for a while, but eventually it will just repeat the cycle. I also tried a rescue disk, but after I got into it a bit, was shown a message about the partitions on the hard drive being incorrectly installed (or something like that).

At this point, I am reaching the bottom of my very shallow cup of knowledge. Anybody have any ideas?

As a side note, we did have an external monitor hooked up to the PC at one point before we received the replacement screen and the machine worked. After that, though, we were not able to get the external monitor to work again, so we weren't sure why that happened.

When I use the rescue disk, I do see a very nice image of a green blade of grass on the monitor, so it seems that I have it hooked up correctly.

I can go into BIOS as well and make any selection, but once I try and load Windows, I still get that cursor on the upper left of the screen. And as I said, I will let it sit for 45 min - 1 hour and nothing really changes or it repeats.

Does anyone have any ideas on this?

Thanks in advance,

Diddy

A:Can't boot Windows 7 after screen repair - Lenovo G560

Quite possible something else was jarred loose, like the hard drive or a connecting cable or memory. The hard drive and memory should be easily accessible via access panels on the bottom of the laptop, check them. Unplug and replug them one at a time, making sure they are firmly seated. See if that helps.

Lenovo G560 - Issue with won't boot and black screen after HDD upgrade.  What happen: My laptop was working fine, no blue screen issue, no funny business at all. I bought a new SSD Intel 120 GB and thought it would be a good idea to replace the HDD. I shutdown and disconnected the power adapter, waited a couple of minutes and removed the battery. I opened up the back case and replaced the HDD. And put all the screws back and put the battery back in. Problem: The very first time I turned the power on, nothing happens besides a black screen. I pressed the dvd drive it works and opens up and closes. I waited for about 30 mins and still has blac screen. When I mean black screen, no bios menu, no logo, just a black screen with the fan sound on.  I have tried these: 1. Unplugged everything - battery, adapter, and pressed the power on button for about 60 seconds, nothing, the laptop turns on with the LED display on for both on and battery LED's. But nothing but black screen, no sound of windows loading just the fan and black screen. 2. I tried putting back my old 2.5" and nothing but black screen.  Thoughts and suggestions?

I upgraded my wife's Laptop to windows 10 from windows 7 last year and it seemed to work fine. She just went out of town and tried to use Skype to video call me but the webcam isn't working. The Audio works fine and Skype worked fine on windows 7. I had her push FN+ESC and it told her that there is no Webcam installed. I connected to her laptop via Teamviewer and tried to check the Device Manager Imaging Devices, but there was no entry for Imaging Devices. I downloaded the Camera Driver(Bison, Chicony) for Microsoft Windows 8 (32-bit, 64-bit) - Lenovo G460, G560 Lenovo G560 driver for windows 8 (no driver available for win10) and tried to install it but no luck. I'm wondering if there is a Microsoft Generic Webcam driver that might work, but this is her work machine so I don't want to remotely install drivers willy nilly. Thanks

Hello,I have a Lenovo Thinkpad W540 which is out of warranty.  While using the Lenovo System Update utility to update the BIOS, the BIOS update failed, and now my W540 will no longer boot.  Is there a way to restore the BIOS without replacing the system board? Is there a place where can I download the BIOS file (not only the upgrade utility)? Thank you!

Original installation: Windows 7, 64-bit. After the Windows 10 upgrade, the hard drive started to die. Attempts to run OneKey Recovery v7.0 to create the factory recovery DVD media displayed the error "Driver initialization failed Please reinstall application".   Solution:  Run OneKey Recovery as Administrator in Windows 7 compatibility mode.
