Losing internet - one site or all?

Q: Losing internet - one site or all?

I have Vista and DSL. I've had times where I'll go to a site and it will seem like the site is hanging. Then the network indicator (in the system tray) will turn to a "!".

My main question is, is it possible that something is wrong with one site, and Vista is "fooled" into thinking something is wrong with the whole internet connection??

Or is Vista always going to be accurate about losing the connection?

It doesn't happen often. Every few weeks I might suddenly see the globe disappear and there is just the two computers, but then the globe will return after a minute. However today I had to reboot the DSL modem and it was okay.

Preferred Solution: Losing internet - one site or all?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I dont know of the OS being fooled. You are hanging because of the bad connection.
Take the speed test and then ping test and post results here.

When it happens type event viewer in search, by search and take not of any errors, from administrative tab.

How to force IE 11 to ask for saving credentials again for just one web site, after having accidentally sellect not to remember password for that particular site. Please, take into account that:

- I'm totally aware that storing credentials is not a good security practice, but in my particular case this is what I need to do.

- I know that reseting IE or similar approachs will do the job, but doing that I'll lost more tan 70 web sites credentials. I need a solution not involving loose all the web credentials stored.
- I also know that there is way to do the trick "lying" to IE using a modified but similar username, but this only works in some web sites, depending on the kind of login mechanism used. In my particulare case this trick also does not work.
- I also know that there was a registry hack for this particular problem, but this does not work with IE last versions.

Any help would be very apreciated.

I have tried most of the posts on the internet to fix this problem--this is under IE6--"Internet Explorer was not able to open this Internet site. The requested site is either unavailable or cannot be found. Please try again later." The problem just suddenly appeared. I'm running a Dell Inspiron B130 laptop with Win XP Home, Service Pack 3 installed, 1 gb ram and a 40 gb HDD. Had McAffee Internet Security Suite preinstalled but removed it via REVO Uninstaller and have only Windows firewall enabled and NO anti-virus. I did try downloading with Windows firewall disbaled and still no success. I can navigate to a site like Google Chrome download page but then when I click on the download button, the error message appears. Also can't download Microsoft or Windows updates from either site, although, again, I can get through the "checking" phase. I've run Malwarebytes, A-Squared, and IObit 360 and removed about 13 traces of malware ranging from low risk to high risk, defragged and cleaned the reg, all to no avail. I originally had IE7 installed, read about rolling back to IE6 and doing the typical repair sequences, again to no avail. Supposedly IE8 fixes this, but I can't download it, although I did try the stand-alone installer of 15 MB without checking the "get updates" box. It loaded and installed and shows up as IE8 but still had the same problems. Then did a system restore back to before the IE8 install, rolled back to IE6 again... Read more

Problem: I am able to connect to the internet at home (southern Ontario Canada), but at my ressidence at university (northern Ontario Canada) I can't hold a connection for longer than 2 mins, via wireless or lan.

I can however connect to others via lan in my building as we have played some Diablo 2 as of just last night. I origionally thought it was the university's network since my computer worked fine at home, however I have been asking around and nobody I have questioned in the building has any problem with their connection here.

I am using an HP Pavillion dv6000 series laptop.

I ran a CMD for ipconfig /all and this is what I came up with, honestly I have no idea whats going on, I'm new to all this computer stuff.

It's kinda weird because I can't browse the internet after 1-2 hours after windows startup but I can ping any sites using the command prompt, play any online games, download using my utorrent and update my antivirus. This problem occur last Wednesday I think. Tried to disable then enable again in the network connection but didn't work. The only way to browse again is to restart which is crazy.

1) Reinstalling my network driver.
2) Scan for viruses and spywares.
3) Update using windows update
4) Reinstall OS then update again using windows update

Now I reinstall again my OS but didn't update using windows update yet(disabled it). I think the update this month is the culprit but I'm not pretty sure. Right now I don't have any problem with the internet. Anyone here can help me figure out what's the problem?

I posted this yesterday, but had no response yet. Someone is sending messages to my computer so often I can't hardly get to a page on the net...tying up my bandwidth, dsl. Plus now I can't check email, it is requesting my password to check it. I am afraid to type it in.

My firewall shows someone is constantly trying to access my computer, but no program shows up. Internet connection slows to a crawl or stops while the attacks happens. Sometimes pop up hell locks up the computer. Explorer won't open untill I restart computer. I ran cw shredder, spybot, several anti virus programs and ad ware, but they found nothing.

Further to my previous post re the same problem I have delved a bit deeper and would like any opinions as to a possible cause.
What happens is I will be surfing the net then for no apparent reasons my connection goes, well let's say i am unable to open new webpages.
When this happened last night, after numerous router reboots to get net back, I observed the following.

Opening network connections showed a picture of a PC , a white tick in a green box with the comment Broadband Connection Disconnected WAN Miniport(PPPOE)
With this displayed I had no problem opening new web pages at all!
Clicking Nertwork disgnostics I get the following
Windows has confirmed that this computer is currently experinecing a network connectivity problem. Unable to fix automatically.

If I look at the Network and Sharing centre the line between my router and the internet has a nice red cross on it, even though as I say I can surf the net normally!

Now there was a mention of Winsock.
MS support says how to determine and recover from Winsock2 corruption in Windows Server 2003, XP and Vista

Going to the manual steps to determine whether Winsock2 is corrupt there is a lot of items but Part 3 mentions 10 sections but I see 14.
The MS help screen shows 6 entries beginning MSAFD Netbios I don't have any of these entries
I have done a successful reset of Winsock as per MS but still the problem persists.
As stated before this happens with any router connected to my PC.
Problem may go away for a day, or... Read more

This has been an ongoing problem for around 6 mths now and is really getting to me now.
Namely the dropping of the internet.
I can be merrily surfing the net one minute and then the next if I go to a site I get the message "looking up XXXXX".
At this time my taskbar internet icon can be showing the internet connect to be either "local" or "local and internet".
Now obviously if local I will lose it but if it's saying "local and internet" why doesn't it work? It will eventually drop back to local everytime. Even though at all times the ADSL line light on my modem/router is showing solid.
The problem is intermittent. I can have best part of a day without trouble, then it may happen lots of times in a short period.
To get it back requires reboots of the modem/router and/or reboots of the PC.
I have tried 3 different modem/routers all do the same. Now losing patience

Hopefully someone here can help me out! Sadly I dont know much about computers so I really dont know if I'm giving enough info for someone to help!

Anyways heres the problem that I've been having for quit some time.

I will lose my internet connection just randomly. I have a feeling something was set up wrong because I didnt even set up my computer. I just plugged it in and it was working.

I've got this new Medion computer and I've got a cable connection. Its connected to a router that supports 2 other computers. I also have a wireless thing so I dont have a whole bunch of wires everywhere.

I seem to lost me internet connections just any ole way, some times I will be surfing the net and then bam no more connection.

OR I will be playing a game online through either my Xbox, Playstation or even now my PC and some times it works fine and others I cant stay in a game for over 2 minutes without having to unplug and replug my connection cables.

Recently I've been having problems trying to download things from the internet. Like I'm now getting into PC games and I like the fact that some games I can actually play a Demo before buying. While during the downloads it usually just stops midway and tells me my connection has been lost. Then I have to redu everything and hope this time will be different. I've been unable to successfully download 3 different demos and its starting to drive me crazy.

Hey all,
I've been running W7 since beta (now using the RTM) and every few reboots or coming back from sleep mode, it loses connectivity to the Internet. Very frustrating. It usually takes one or two hard reboots (or even unplugging and leaving the computer sit) to get it back. No rhyme or reason. I'm dual booting, so I can boot right over to XP and things are normal. Never had this issue with the XP boot, just W7. This problem happened with the other builds as well.

Troubleshooting in W7 never finds anything (no surprise there), resetting connection doesn't work either. Connection is rock solid when I have it, it's just on reboot or coming back from sleep mode when the problem happens.

Why this just happens randomly is beyond me. Any ideas? It's keeping me from using w7 full time and I sure won't purchase it when it's this flakey.

One quick thing you can do is to uncheck IPv6 in the network card settings.
This often does the trick.
You have to realize however, that this will break the Homegroup function.
Meaning you will have to setup network shares like it is done in XP and Vista, which imho is safer and easier.

If it doesn't help, post back.

good luck

I have to go to sleep mode for a while and sign in again and sometimes twice to get back on which is almost instantanious. I am on a Thinkpad T23 which is my back up. never had thatproblem with CAT5 (non-wireless). However, I do have that problem with my new wireless setup. What type (cable, DSL, satellite) of connection do you use? What kind of adaptar are you using? If the service is brand new check with the provider for tech support, otherwise if it is not on their end they will tell you to contact your adapter tech suport.

I have a Dell XPS 630 system with Vista Home Premium 32 bit. I am connected to the Internet by cable modem. I like to play COD World at War online and here recently while playing online I'll get kicked for losing "map packets". I'll run windows diagnostics and get a msg "cannot communicate with primary dns server". The only way I can get back online is to reset the modem by unplugging and waiting a few minutes before plugging it back in. I disconnected my wireless system thinking it may be the router and hooked the modem directly to my PC. No such luck as the problem still occurs. I contacted my ISP (Cox) and they assured me it's not a problem of theirs. I changed cables thinking I had a bad one but it still occurs. My NIC is Nvidia nforce 10/100/1000 and the driver is up to date. Any help would be highly appreciated.

A:Keep losing Internet connection

Make sure your Primary and Secondary DNS servers (in your Modem)are set up they way your ISP describes. If you have set this as "auto" you'll need to override it.

Check your Modem logs...there might be some clues there for the disconnects. This shouldn;t be happening on a cable modem.

Check your Network connection settings.... tutorials are available in the Tutorials section of this fine forum

Problem: Every few hours my network loses internet while I am on WoW & Vent, I get disconnected from both and have to wait 30sec+ for my network to re-establish internet connection.

What I've done so far:
-I have a wireless modem, but I've gotten an ethernet cord to plug directly in it
-Changed my energy settings to high/max performance
-Updated my network card
-Unplugged the modem for a short period then plugged it back in
-Disconnected from my network and reconnected
-Scanned for malicious software using Windows Security Essentials, as well as for spyware using Spybot S&D

This has been going on for a while, before we got our wireless modem (which is shared between 3 computers), we had a router & modem and we would continuously lose internet completely and we would have to reset the router and modem each time this happened. Now that we have a wireless modem, this happens.

Hi, Im new here. Ive been having this problem of losing my internet connection at random times for about a week now. It happens less frequent if im just trolling forums and such, but if im in a game or online training class it happens about 5 minutes in. Im running windows XP, using a Intel(R) PRO/100 M Network Adapter.

When I lose the internet, the only way to get it back is either to restart my machine, modem, or go to Network Connections and Disable then Re-Enable my local area network. Also it says its still connected, it just isn't sending or recieving any packets. Im pretty sure its not my ISPs problem as i just switched from DSL to Cable because of this and its still doing it. Ive reset my modem and that doesn't help.

Hi there, and welcome. Some questions for you --

Just to confirm, you had this problem with your DSL service and it continues with your cable modem?

Do you use a router? If so, what make/model?

When did this problem start? And what changed on your PC if you can recall or pin-point that when this problem started?

I have a Dell T3400 workstation computer running Windows 7 Professional 64 Bit and recently I have been losing my WiFi internet connection.

I am using a Netgear N300 router with a Netgear N300 USB WiFi antennae. Until recently I had not experienced any problems but lately when I plug a USB flash drive into my computer and then remove it I lose my internet connection. I always remove my flash drives by using the app in the Windows System Tray to stop the drive before I remove it.

After I remove the flash drive I lose my internet connection and when I look at the Available Networks widget in System Tray is shows my network but with zero bars and the diagnostic utility is of no use at resolving the problem or re-connecting. The only way I have found to re-connect is to shut my computer down and re-start it.

I have looked in Device Manager and they are no warnings or errors and everything appears to be playing nice so I am stumped and any help is appreciated. Thanks.

A:Losing Internet Connection

This first question may seem insulting, but I'm just trying to not overlook an obvious possibility ...

Are you positive that you are not selecting 'remove wireless adapter' instead of 'remove flash drive'?

It sounds like there is some unusual problem with the USB ports or with the "safely remove" feature. Have you tried to get the wireless working again by (physically) removing and reinserting the wireless adapter?

Hello all, been having a very frustrating few months with Rogers ISP and trying to find a solution to my internet connectivity issues. Let me describe what has been happening.

My internet at completely random of times drops and can take anywhere from 2 minutes to reconnect or 20. This may happen once a day, this may happen 10+ times a day. Totally different all the time. Basically what happens is it I get the yellow triangle on my taskbar where the connection should be saying limited connectivity, sometimes I get a complete red X going through it saying there is no connection. It always reconnects at some point though.

I have replaced the modem as of yesterday and still having the issue, have called guys in to dig up the wires and replace them. Have had multiple tech guy's from Rgers come and look into it but they don't really have a clue what they're doing. Everything has been checked. I am so frustrated with this. I checked the lights when it wasn't working, the "DB" light was off on the modem and all the lights we're kinda going off and on. When it was working all light's we're on. Here is a copy of the ipconfig I just ran while it was down.

Wondering if anyone here can help me. Recently, out of the blue........my computer drops its internet connection. It happens if I am not using it for a while, or when it hibernates, screen savor comes on, etc... I have an always on cable modem and never had a problem with it in 3 years.

The only way I get it back is to unplug the modem, and then restart the computer.

It is getting a signal, but not seeing the IP address, I am assuming.

Thanks for any help

A:Keep losing internet connection

Could be a wiring problem, this has been the case for me and a few friends. Could also be the ISP as well.
Firstly i suggest new cables and then possibly contact your isp to see whats going on.

I'm having major problems with My internet connection. It started happening after I installed TuneUp Utilities 2009. I checked their website and couldn't find an answer. I uninstalled it, but it didn't help. I have 2 computers connected via router. The problem only occurs on the main computer (the one I'm using now). I checked all the network settings against the other computer , and they are identical (TCP/IP, etc.). I'll be surfing the internet and everything is loading fine, then all of a sudden My connection just drops (no internet, email, etc.). Any ideas?

Contact your ISP, it may be caused by your modem or router, if you have one. Is XP updated to SP3?

A:Losing Internet Connection

Do you have a broadband connection or dial-up?

If you have dial-up, go to Tools/Options/Connections tab, and uncheck the option "Hang Up After Send/Receive.", then choose Apply, then OK.

For Broadband, make sure Internet Explorer is set to NEVER dial a connection - from IE go to Tools/Options/Connections tab, then choose the "Never Dial A Connection" option. Then choose Apply, then OK.

I'm not sure if anyone is affected by this bug on Windows 10 but in the past 2 months, while browsing or doing any other activity, my computer would suddently lose internet connection and fail to detect any network (it would just constantly load without getting any results despite my router being connected and my drivers being activated aswell). If I try to reboot or shutdown my computer when this happens, it gets stuck on the shutdown screen for several hours or even days; the only way to bypass this problem and get the internet connection back online is to force a shutdown.
Anyone here can help me fix this problem??

A:Losing Internet Connection out of nowhere

Is it a Ethernet connection? You could also try a different DNS address( either google DNS or Open DNS).

Hey guys, got a quick question, hoping someone can help me out with this.

I've got DSL and I keep losing my internet connection, like every 20 minutes or so. I'll see a little balloon over the taskbar that says "unable to connect" or something similar, then a few seconds later it'll say "connected at such and such a speed," etc. But it takes maybe 2 minutes for the connection to get going again, which can seem like a lifetime when you're in the middle of something.

I guess I shouldn't complain, because it's not like I have to restart the computer or anything, but I sure would love to avoid these constant connection interruptions if it's at all possible. I never had this problem before, not sure what's causing it. I am using a network type device so that I can have the internet on 2 machines, but it's not wireless or anything and it's worked flawlessly up until now.

Can anyone possibly shed some light on this? Rest assured I'd be much obliged for any info anyone can send my way.

Thanks in advance.

A:I keep losing my internet connection

Are you having this problem on both machines? If so, it sounds like your router (network type device so that I can have the internet on 2 machines) is going out. You can try and unplug the power from it, let it sit a few minutes and plug it back in. If that doesnt get rid of your problem, I would say get a new router.

A few questions that will help in diagnosing the problem;

1. Wired or WiFI connection?
2. Is there a router?
3. Provider, such as; Comcast, CenturyLink, etc?
4. Is the location in a single family home or multi-unit building?
5. Are you using any security features on the system, such as a firewall?

I have a computer running Windows 8.1, It was saying that it had a network connection but would not pull up any websites. I could not connect from Team Viewer either. I have run a couple of free Anti Virus programs to no avail. I was able to browse the internet after removing all startup tasks and rebooting the computer. But after a while it quits again. I know it is probably something simple but haven't been able to figure it out yet.
Thanks in advance for any suggestions or options.

A:Internet losing connectivity after a while.

What is the make and model of this computer?
How are you connecting to the Internet?  Example:  Let's assume you are using a desktop with a USB wifi adapter, this sends to a router which is connected to your modem via a Ethernet cable.

Actually, it just stops working. I have to click disconnect and then connect to make it work again.

It is a wireless HP laptop, using a Belkin wireless router and I have Roadrunner service on a Scientific Atlanta modem.

Does anyone else have this problem?

A:I keep losing my internet connection

Please supply the following info, exact make and models of the equipment please.

Name of your ISP (Internet Service Provider).
Make and exact model of the broadband modem.
Make and exact model and hardware version of the router (if a separate unit).
Model numbers can usually be obtained from the label on the device.
Connection type, wired or wireless.
If wireless, encryption used, (none, WEP, WPA, or WPA2)
Version and patch level of Windows on all affected machines, i.e. XP (Home or Pro), SP1-SP2-SP3, Vista (Home, Business, Ultimate), etc.
The Internet Browser in use, IE, Firefox, Opera, etc.

Please give an exact description of your problem symptoms, including the exact text of any error messages.

If you're using a wireless connection, have you tried a direct connection with a cable to see if that changes the symptoms?
For wireless issues, have you disabled all encryption on the router to see if you can connect that way?
Have you connected directly to the broadband modem to see if this is a router or modem/ISP issue?
If there are other computers on the same network, are they experiencing the same issue, or do they function normally?

On any affected computer, I'd also like to see this:

Hold the Windows key and press R, then type CMD (COMMAND for W98/WME) to open a command prompt:

Type the following commands on separate lines, following each one with the Enter key:

PING yahoo.com

As the title suggests i keep losing my internet connection. Although it is never more than a few seconds at a time it disrupts my viewing of live streaming.
This happens quite frequently up to (15+ times) and i am unsure of what i should do.
People have suggested that it could have something to do with Zonealarm which incidentally was uninstalled a while ago. Around about the same time all these problems began.
Others believe it could be the phone company.
Any genius out there have the answer?

I hope you can help. Recently I've been losing the internet connection on a regular basis - sometimes more than once an hour. It normally works when I restart the router and/or restart my browser. I recently upgraded my laptop to a Toshiba Satellite L505-124 with Windows 7 - my previous operating system was XP.

I have a 20MB broadband connection which I use with my wireless laptop. The laptop doesn't seem to have problems finding the service providing it just keeps losing the connections. I ran a small test and got these results:

Hey everyone. I've had this question for a while now but am just now to finding out the answer (this is my first post on the forum so I hope I'm in the right section ). Anyway, I've got cable Internet, the modem is kept downstairs as is the linksys router. I'm on a desktop computer and my two roommates are on laptops; we all use wireless methods to connect to the Internet from upstairs: I use a USB stick, one uses some "Airport" thing for his Mac and the other has an integrated wireless card for hers. Anyway, a lot of the times when my roommates either open or close their laptops, Internet is wiped out completely and it takes a good while to reset everything and get it all back up and running. I was wondering both WHY this happens and if there is any way to stop it from happening? I hope I'm not being too vague, and hopefully someone here knows what's up. It's a real pain in the ***!

Thanks a lot for any insight

A:Keep losing Internet connection.

Thats the same setup I had, a cable modem and even a Linksys router. I too was having a problem with losing my internet connection jsut dropping and having to reboot the router, I've now replaced the Linksys router with a D-Link router and no more issues. My router was simply broken.

Does everyone loose their internet connection? If so then you too may a new router.
