Losing internet - one site or all?

Q: Losing internet - one site or all?

I have Vista and DSL. I've had times where I'll go to a site and it will seem like the site is hanging. Then the network indicator (in the system tray) will turn to a "!".

My main question is, is it possible that something is wrong with one site, and Vista is "fooled" into thinking something is wrong with the whole internet connection??

Or is Vista always going to be accurate about losing the connection?

It doesn't happen often. Every few weeks I might suddenly see the globe disappear and there is just the two computers, but then the globe will return after a minute. However today I had to reboot the DSL modem and it was okay.

Preferred Solution: Losing internet - one site or all?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I dont know of the OS being fooled. You are hanging because of the bad connection.
Take the speed test and then ping test and post results here.
Speedtest.net - The Global Broadband Speed Test
Try during clean boot. It may be a conflict
How to troubleshoot a problem by performing a clean boot in Windows Vista or in Windows 7

When it happens type event viewer in search, by search and take not of any errors, from administrative tab.

When it happens right click on the newtwork icon, lower right and then diagnose and repair.

How to force IE 11 to ask for saving credentials again for just one web site, after having accidentally sellect not to remember password for that particular site. Please, take into account that:

- I'm totally aware that storing credentials is not a good security practice, but in my particular case this is what I need to do.

- I know that reseting IE or similar approachs will do the job, but doing that I'll lost more tan 70 web sites credentials. I need a solution not involving loose all the web credentials stored.
- I also know that there is way to do the trick "lying" to IE using a modified but similar username, but this only works in some web sites, depending on the kind of login mechanism used. In my particulare case this trick also does not work.
- I also know that there was a registry hack for this particular problem, but this does not work with IE last versions.

Any help would be very apreciated.

I have tried most of the posts on the internet to fix this problem--this is under IE6--"Internet Explorer was not able to open this Internet site. The requested site is either unavailable or cannot be found. Please try again later." The problem just suddenly appeared. I'm running a Dell Inspiron B130 laptop with Win XP Home, Service Pack 3 installed, 1 gb ram and a 40 gb HDD. Had McAffee Internet Security Suite preinstalled but removed it via REVO Uninstaller and have only Windows firewall enabled and NO anti-virus. I did try downloading with Windows firewall disbaled and still no success. I can navigate to a site like Google Chrome download page but then when I click on the download button, the error message appears. Also can't download Microsoft or Windows updates from either site, although, again, I can get through the "checking" phase. I've run Malwarebytes, A-Squared, and IObit 360 and removed about 13 traces of malware ranging from low risk to high risk, defragged and cleaned the reg, all to no avail. I originally had IE7 installed, read about rolling back to IE6 and doing the typical repair sequences, again to no avail. Supposedly IE8 fixes this, but I can't download it, although I did try the stand-alone installer of 15 MB without checking the "get updates" box. It loaded and installed and shows up as IE8 but still had the same problems. Then did a system restore back to before the IE8 install, rolled back to IE6 again... Read more

Problem: I am able to connect to the internet at home (southern Ontario Canada), but at my ressidence at university (northern Ontario Canada) I can't hold a connection for longer than 2 mins, via wireless or lan.

I can however connect to others via lan in my building as we have played some Diablo 2 as of just last night. I origionally thought it was the university's network since my computer worked fine at home, however I have been asking around and nobody I have questioned in the building has any problem with their connection here.

It's kinda weird because I can't browse the internet after 1-2 hours after windows startup but I can ping any sites using the command prompt, play any online games, download using my utorrent and update my antivirus. This problem occur last Wednesday I think. Tried to disable then enable again in the network connection but didn't work. The only way to browse again is to restart which is crazy.

1) Reinstalling my network driver.
2) Scan for viruses and spywares.
3) Update using windows update
4) Reinstall OS then update again using windows update

Now I reinstall again my OS but didn't update using windows update yet(disabled it). I think the update this month is the culprit but I'm not pretty sure. Right now I don't have any problem with the internet. Anyone here can help me figure out what's the problem?

Hello, M3rk, and welcome to the Vista forums

The only thing I can think off to check that is time related is the device Power management, Check in the device manager on the network card properties and ensure that the "Let Windows turn of the power to this device" is set to disabled.

Hope it's this simple

I posted this yesterday, but had no response yet. Someone is sending messages to my computer so often I can't hardly get to a page on the net...tying up my bandwidth, dsl. Plus now I can't check email, it is requesting my password to check it. I am afraid to type it in.

My firewall shows someone is constantly trying to access my computer, but no program shows up. Internet connection slows to a crawl or stops while the attacks happens. Sometimes pop up hell locks up the computer. Explorer won't open untill I restart computer. I ran cw shredder, spybot, several anti virus programs and ad ware, but they found nothing.

Hopefully someone here can help me out! Sadly I dont know much about computers so I really dont know if I'm giving enough info for someone to help!

Anyways heres the problem that I've been having for quit some time.

I will lose my internet connection just randomly. I have a feeling something was set up wrong because I didnt even set up my computer. I just plugged it in and it was working.

I've got this new Medion computer and I've got a cable connection. Its connected to a router that supports 2 other computers. I also have a wireless thing so I dont have a whole bunch of wires everywhere.

I seem to lost me internet connections just any ole way, some times I will be surfing the net and then bam no more connection.

OR I will be playing a game online through either my Xbox, Playstation or even now my PC and some times it works fine and others I cant stay in a game for over 2 minutes without having to unplug and replug my connection cables.

Recently I've been having problems trying to download things from the internet. Like I'm now getting into PC games and I like the fact that some games I can actually play a Demo before buying. While during the downloads it usually just stops midway and tells me my connection has been lost. Then I have to redu everything and hope this time will be different. I've been unable to successfully download 3 different demos and its starting to drive me crazy.

Hey all,
I've been running W7 since beta (now using the RTM) and every few reboots or coming back from sleep mode, it loses connectivity to the Internet. Very frustrating. It usually takes one or two hard reboots (or even unplugging and leaving the computer sit) to get it back. No rhyme or reason. I'm dual booting, so I can boot right over to XP and things are normal. Never had this issue with the XP boot, just W7. This problem happened with the other builds as well.

Troubleshooting in W7 never finds anything (no surprise there), resetting connection doesn't work either. Connection is rock solid when I have it, it's just on reboot or coming back from sleep mode when the problem happens.

Why this just happens randomly is beyond me. Any ideas? It's keeping me from using w7 full time and I sure won't purchase it when it's this flakey.

One quick thing you can do is to uncheck IPv6 in the network card settings.
This often does the trick.
You have to realize however, that this will break the Homegroup function.
Meaning you will have to setup network shares like it is done in XP and Vista, which imho is safer and easier.

If it doesn't help, post back.

good luck

This has been an ongoing problem for around 6 mths now and is really getting to me now.
Namely the dropping of the internet.
I can be merrily surfing the net one minute and then the next if I go to a site I get the message "looking up XXXXX".
At this time my taskbar internet icon can be showing the internet connect to be either "local" or "local and internet".
Now obviously if local I will lose it but if it's saying "local and internet" why doesn't it work? It will eventually drop back to local everytime. Even though at all times the ADSL line light on my modem/router is showing solid.
The problem is intermittent. I can have best part of a day without trouble, then it may happen lots of times in a short period.
To get it back requires reboots of the modem/router and/or reboots of the PC.
I have tried 3 different modem/routers all do the same. Now losing patience

Further to my previous post re the same problem I have delved a bit deeper and would like any opinions as to a possible cause.
What happens is I will be surfing the net then for no apparent reasons my connection goes, well let's say i am unable to open new webpages.
When this happened last night, after numerous router reboots to get net back, I observed the following.

Opening network connections showed a picture of a PC , a white tick in a green box with the comment Broadband Connection Disconnected WAN Miniport(PPPOE)
With this displayed I had no problem opening new web pages at all!
Clicking Nertwork disgnostics I get the following
Windows has confirmed that this computer is currently experinecing a network connectivity problem. Unable to fix automatically.

If I look at the Network and Sharing centre the line between my router and the internet has a nice red cross on it, even though as I say I can surf the net normally!

Now there was a mention of Winsock.
MS support says how to determine and recover from Winsock2 corruption in Windows Server 2003, XP and Vista

Going to the manual steps to determine whether Winsock2 is corrupt there is a lot of items but Part 3 mentions 10 sections but I see 14.
The MS help screen shows 6 entries beginning MSAFD Netbios I don't have any of these entries
I have done a successful reset of Winsock as per MS but still the problem persists.
As stated before this happens with any router connected to my PC.
Problem may go away for a day, or... Read more

Hi, Im new here. Ive been having this problem of losing my internet connection at random times for about a week now. It happens less frequent if im just trolling forums and such, but if im in a game or online training class it happens about 5 minutes in. Im running windows XP, using a Intel(R) PRO/100 M Network Adapter.

When I lose the internet, the only way to get it back is either to restart my machine, modem, or go to Network Connections and Disable then Re-Enable my local area network. Also it says its still connected, it just isn't sending or recieving any packets. Im pretty sure its not my ISPs problem as i just switched from DSL to Cable because of this and its still doing it. Ive reset my modem and that doesn't help.
Any help is much appreciated, if u need more specific info just ask.

Hi there, and welcome. Some questions for you --

Just to confirm, you had this problem with your DSL service and it continues with your cable modem?

Do you use a router? If so, what make/model?

When did this problem start? And what changed on your PC if you can recall or pin-point that when this problem started?

Good Morning all!

Something has been happening to hubby's computer at the office for the past 4 days that has us mystified. He is running XP home (see my second post for help with his Hijack This log) and is on DSL. He can go to a first web page (any - doesn't matter), but when he tries to switch to another he loses his internet connection. It won't come back on unless he restarts his computer. Then it starts again - 1 web site at a time! We've contacted our ISP and they report that others (including some of the techs themselves!) have had this same problem. They think it must be some kind of virus but they don't know what.

We downloaded and ran Symantec's fix for MyDoom and it came out clean. We've run AdAware, Spybot, Spyware Guard and Spyware Blaster. Oh, and CWShredder. Updating each time.

Any suggestions? I'm sure my tech help at Northwest would appreciate it... and so would we!!

My work uses SuddenLink cable for their internet. We have a small network. The modem is connected through the WRT54G Linksys Router which is set as a gateway & in the middle of the building another WRT54G which is set as a slave. (Both are wireless so this is for wireless coverage)
IP for the master is & for the slave The master assigns IP's via DHCP.
We have 15 computers on our network & a domain controller running Windows 2k Server. This is primarly to use Active Directory.

The problem is our internet keeps dropping out around the same time each night, I dont have anything running at that time to kick us off, all scheduled updates, defrag, virus scans etc are done from 2am. Usually when I come in in the morning & reboot the modem & router & all is fine. In the last 3 weeks it has gotten worse, intermittantly losing internet during the day, SuddenLinks tech support have replaced the modem 2 times, replaced the connectors & splitter. The last modem they sent apparently was left on Auto-Discovery mode so the re provisioned it. Worked great during the day for a few days then back to dropping off when it wants to. We have Nortons Corp for our virus protection, firewall is set up just on the router & I have 3 ports forwarded for VPN access & our security camera's.

Any idea's/suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

First, I hope I posted this in the right category.

Ok, here's the issue, I can't surf the web after after I leave my PC alone. This only happens when after it goes into a screensaver mode.

Here are my settings:
14 minutes for my screensaver
20 minutes to turn off monitor

The problem is my zonealarm. After shutting down zonealarm, everything is fine.
This seems to be at a random case. It can anytime after the monitor shuts down.

So basically, my solution to this is shutdown zonealarm or restart. Is there a way to prevent this? I cant seem to find any settings in ZA.

My internet is losing connection VERY often, isp offers little help. Here is my problem with my stats

ISP: Bellsouth high speed DSL
Modem/router: 2wire(dont know model number, was a 100$ router)
It's directly connected in my computer
OS: Windows 7

Basically my problem is im dc'ing literally anywhere from 2-5 times per 10 mintes, It's uncontrollable. Just dc after dc.
I have no idea what is causing it. Possibly high temperatures, It's cool in my room, 71-74 deg, but it's hot outside. No faulty cables or bad modem, I replaced all them recently ( within 2 months ).

The weird part is, my internet literally fixes itself, I had this same problem like 2 weeks ago, went to sleep, woke up, and no disconnects for a month. It just recently came back yesterday, and i've been dc'ing out of control for 2 days now.

I've ran tracerts and confirmed that it's my ISP losing signal. I usually don't post on forums like these, because im a do-it-yourself kind of guy , But i've literally tried everything within my knowledge, and to no avail.

If you need any other information I'd be happy to help. But thanks in advance for reading this and possibly helping me .

Do you have a broadband connection or dial-up?

If you have dial-up, go to Tools/Options/Connections tab, and uncheck the option "Hang Up After Send/Receive.", then choose Apply, then OK.

For Broadband, make sure Internet Explorer is set to NEVER dial a connection - from IE go to Tools/Options/Connections tab, then choose the "Never Dial A Connection" option. Then choose Apply, then OK.

As the title suggests i keep losing my internet connection. Although it is never more than a few seconds at a time it disrupts my viewing of live streaming.
This happens quite frequently up to (15+ times) and i am unsure of what i should do.
People have suggested that it could have something to do with Zonealarm which incidentally was uninstalled a while ago. Around about the same time all these problems began.
Others believe it could be the phone company.
Any genius out there have the answer?

A:losing connection to internet

maybe theres a problem with the router hardware.
Do you know if its at the latest firmware release

also it could be DNS

when it goes try pinging a website www.bbc.co.uk
if that does not work
try pinging

if that works then its DNS
have a look at the router settigns for DNS - I had to put IP's in mine as it kept crashing 10 times a day and resetting the router fixed each time.

I have a Dell Inspiron 530 with a Dynex wireless G Router at home. I'm obviously working online now so I know everything is hooked up correctly. My wife has a Dell Laptop that she also connects to the internet via the router. If one of us tries to log on to the internet after being logged off for some time, Explorer tells us there's no connection. I then unplug the router and Comcast cable modem from the main power source, wait a few seconds, then plug them back in. We can then access the internet. This happens daily. If I bypass the router and plug the cable directly into the tower there is never a problem. I've tried reinstalling the router software but the same problem occurs. I thought it was my original router's problem but the problem continues with the Dynex I purchased. This also is a brand new computer but the problem occurred with my last one as well.

HelloI have a Pavilion Notebook 17 that is dropping the internet connection in about 30 min after connecting. I have run  the Windows Network Diagnostic test. It says "The connection between your access point, router, or cable modem and the internet is broken. The network gateway is accessible, but windows couldn't receive network traffic from the internet."I have called my provider and have a different connection setup to see if there is any change. No change. I use the laptop at work and am connected to the internet all day long. It is a open network that I use at work. I don't know if that makes a difference or not.I have the Realtek RTL8188EE 802.11b/g/n Wi-Fi Adapter  on the laptop. O/S is Windows 10 PRO 64-bit. It came with 8 but had it switched to 7 PRO for use at work. The Windows 10 PRO was finally supported for use at my job  so I updated just before the free upgrade stopped. Any help would be great.

I'm not sure if anyone is affected by this bug on Windows 10 but in the past 2 months, while browsing or doing any other activity, my computer would suddently lose internet connection and fail to detect any network (it would just constantly load without getting any results despite my router being connected and my drivers being activated aswell). If I try to reboot or shutdown my computer when this happens, it gets stuck on the shutdown screen for several hours or even days; the only way to bypass this problem and get the internet connection back online is to force a shutdown.
Anyone here can help me fix this problem??

A:Losing Internet Connection out of nowhere

Is it a Ethernet connection? You could also try a different DNS address( either google DNS or Open DNS).

Hey guys, got a quick question, hoping someone can help me out with this.

I've got DSL and I keep losing my internet connection, like every 20 minutes or so. I'll see a little balloon over the taskbar that says "unable to connect" or something similar, then a few seconds later it'll say "connected at such and such a speed," etc. But it takes maybe 2 minutes for the connection to get going again, which can seem like a lifetime when you're in the middle of something.

I guess I shouldn't complain, because it's not like I have to restart the computer or anything, but I sure would love to avoid these constant connection interruptions if it's at all possible. I never had this problem before, not sure what's causing it. I am using a network type device so that I can have the internet on 2 machines, but it's not wireless or anything and it's worked flawlessly up until now.

Can anyone possibly shed some light on this? Rest assured I'd be much obliged for any info anyone can send my way.

Thanks in advance.

A:I keep losing my internet connection

Are you having this problem on both machines? If so, it sounds like your router (network type device so that I can have the internet on 2 machines) is going out. You can try and unplug the power from it, let it sit a few minutes and plug it back in. If that doesnt get rid of your problem, I would say get a new router.

Every so often, maybe 4 times an hour, sometimes more sometimes less, the internet will cut out.
I will try to navigate to a page on firefox, but it just comes up blank, and if i click on a link there is just no activity apart from the stop button momentarily flashing.
If you click the link like a 40 times, sometimes it works.
I had this problem with my old computer, but I was running two operating systems on that one and i would just switch over when this happened, because the internet didnt cut out on ubuntu.' I tried this with my current computer but recieved complaints from my family because they do not understand ubuntu. The way i have to browse the internet is everytime it cuts out i disable the wireless and enable it again. its not the router or the wireless adapter because it continues to do this with an ethernet connection and when i used a direct connection with an old modem.

please help
i am using a BT voyager 2091 running windows xp home

Also, if something is streaming, it will continue to buffer, even when the internet cuts out :S

A:Keep losing connection to internet

Hello debjerry,

No infection but too much protection showing here, and very likely some of that is involved in problems. SpywareGuard right off would be potentially blocking normal system functions, and given this setup you might be better not using it. Then you have AntiVir as a much needed antivirus software, but also a-squared there. And AVG anti-spyware, but also the more intrusive Spyware Doctor. And all that working with Commodo's firewall active as well. Disable all of it, uninstall the duplicated ones, reboot after each uninstall and then check after for improvements all around and see how that does.

Hi there

I have tried posting this elsewhere and have had no replies so I thought I would post my hijackthis logs and see if anyone can help me here.

Symptoms I am trying to overcome:

About twice a day my computer (connected to NTL broadband via a router) ceases to gain access to ftp, https:// pages, Remote desktop (unless already connected when it continues to work) and non-NTL pop3 email, though the NTL accounts continue to check fine. Normal browsing of the internet is not affected. This phenomenon is not repeated on the other PCs on the network so it seems it is specific to this one - my main one. This lasts about 20 minutes when it happens.

I did a Hijackthis log while everything was running smoothly, and I have done another while the problem was presenting. As you will see, different programs were running, but otherwise as far as I can see they are identical. I am hoping someone can help, if there is anything here that might cause the problem described above.

Here is the log from when everything was OK

I'm hoping someone can help with this very irritating problem. My computer keeps losing the internet settings and browser history - this seems like it's happening hourly. I've checked the internet options, the scheduled tasks, and any other program I can think of that might be doing this, but I can't figure out why this is happening.
Because of this, my router can't continue to work, because every time I get it set up, the settings then go away, and I have to set it up all over again. However, this deleting of the settings happens whether I'm connected directly to the internet directly or with the router. It doesn't seem to correspond with restarting the computer or with opening IE7.
I'm not sure whether this is a problem of XP, IE7, or if spyware or some other program is doing this.
Does anyone have any ideas? I've tried deleting SpyBot and AdAware in case they were involved, but no success. I have Google Toolbar, and it seems to remember what I've searched for, so it doesn't seem involved.
Should I try re-installing IE7?

Thanks in advance!
