Q: Thinkpad x240 - Fn, Mute and Microphone keys are l...

Hi, Team. It has been 24-hrs since I found out my thinkpad is not turning on.I have used this last Saturday afternoon and shut down completely.I never ever put my TP into sleep mode or hibernate mode. When I woke up yesterday, 11am I found out that the Fn, Mute and Microphone keys are lit up. The fan is not working (the entire system is off). The temperature of the laptop is normal, not warm or heating up like it is being used. I have removed the external battery and power adapter, pushed the power button for more than 3mins., put back the battery and plugged the power adapter (the power button blinks when I plug the power adapter as it usually does when) and pushed the power button back - nothing happens. The Fn, Mute and Microphone buttons are still lit up and the TP is not turning on.I haven't pushed the emergency reset button at the back (I fear that I might lose all my files).Up until now, the same 3-keys are lit up. I need help as soon as possible.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I have a ThinkPad T450 with Windows 10.  The microphone mute button continues to be illuminated.  I can shut it off for a few minutes, but then it comes back on.  I've downloaded the current drivers for the microphone.  Control panels says that the computer has the Realtek High Definition Audio and the driver is up to date.  I've go through the set-up for the microphone several times, but it still turns back to muted.   Any thoughts on how to keep the microphone active?

Okay I have no idea if this is even the right place to ask, but I am running Windows 8.1 so yeah idk. I would really like to have a microphone mute key on my keyboard. I have no way of muting except going into Recording devices and I don't want to do that. On my keyboard at the top I have a few keys mean't for other things, such as one on the end which opens up the Music app, and i'd like to just change one of those keys to a mute key for my microphone. I have a Blue Snowball microphone if that helps. I also have the Alienware Multimedia Keyboard that came with my Alienware X51.

I'm thinking about buying a Blue Snowball iCE because they are fairly cheap and but have great sound quality. I've read some reviews and watched some videos and I'm very happy with this mic, the only problem is that is doesn't have a mute button. I use the mute button a lot because my parents come in to my room frequently and just start talking, so i need to mute my mic so my friends can't hear them. The Blue Snowball iCE mic doesn't have mute button on it so i need a quick way of muting my mic.

I thought of putting in a switch in the wire that goes into the PC. The mic is connected to the computer by a USB, is there an extension wire i could buy with a switch attached to it, that i could plug the mic into and then plug that into the computer?

I really need a fast way to mute my mic and if anybody has any ideas I'm open to them!

Thanks for reading and I hope you can help!

Hey,
Every time I restart my computer I have to re-mute my microphone in the levels tab in the sound option. I do this so I do not hear myself talking through my speakers from my microphone, but so I can still use the microphone for applications.

Also, the microphone boost turn's off every restart as well.
So pretty much, every time I restart I have to mute my microphone again and re-enable the microphone boost.

What I want is too not have to do this on every restart. It only takes me about five seconds to set everything back up so it's only slightly annoying.

I have a creative x-fi xtreme gamer fatality sound card. I have set the correct settings through the audio console as well, but it still reset's to the microphone being set on and sound boost off on restart.

Thanks for any help.

Hello,

I bought a Logitech USB microphone to use with DJ / mixing programs, but I cannot mute it on my desktop computer running with Windows 81. The computer recognises it and says the driver is up to date. The sound quality is fine, but the microphone is constantly on and can be heard in the speakers or headphones while I have it turned off in the programs. I have tried front and back USB ports and three different programs and it is always the same. I have an older laptop using Windows 7 and the microphone works perfectly with full control.

Any suggestions would be most appreciated.

My Thinkpad X240 only comes with an external battery pack, no internal.  I usually power down my laptop at the end of the day.  The following day it won't power on.  I have to remove and re-insert back the battery pack before it turns on. If I power down and leave the laptop for 2hrs it will power up without me having to remove and re-insert back the battery pack.  But if I leave the laptop powered down for more than 3hrs I have to do the process to turn it back on. The battery charges normally, I usually get 4hrs out of the 6 cell pack. I ran the Lenovo Solution Center Comprehensive Tests, no errors found.  I also did the rest button but it won't power on without going thru the process of battery removal.

Already decided for SSD upgrade and now checking the RAM upgrade.Unfortunatly, I have found out that X240 has only one memory slot. Also I have found out following information: "Haswell processors all can take only 8GB UDIMMs or SO-DIMMs". Am I right understanding that RAM upgrade (e.g. to DDR3L SODIMM 16Gb, 1600MHz, CL11, 1.35V) is not possible at all? Thanks in advance.

Hi,I bought a Thinkpad X240 a few months ago, it was working perfectly except the know bug of the "bottom left corner" which happened a few times. But a few days ago, the screen backlight suddenly stopped working. I put it to sleep, I came back home, I opened the lid and the screen didn't light up.The screen itself works perfectly (if you put a light on it you can see what's displayed), and there's no other problem. This doesn't seem to be a software problem since I doesn't work in the BIOS, nor in Windows or Linux.. Why does the backlight would suddenly stop working ? Thanks in advance,

A:Thinkpad X240 no backlight

Same here. The backlight is out in the bios as well so I believe mine is a hardware problem. For other thinkpads, I find people saying this is a surface mount fuse on the motherboard and can be "fixed" by bridging the fuse with solder. But I can't find a fuse near the display port that is bad. The most likely fuse I find is F2 on the backside of the board near the display port, but it doesn't measure as an option circuit so I don't think that one is bad. I will probably buy another broken laptop and swap parts.

I an configuring a ThinkPad x240 for a ProDock with two displays connected to the ProDock.  I have 3 displays available;  VGA, HDI and DisplayPort of which I will use some combination of two.  At present, none of them are recognized when the x240 is docked, either indivdually or in combination. The VGA on the 240 works fine when undocked but otherwise there is no video.  I have swapped out the ProDock, tried each display individually, updated to the latest UEFI version, and checked the UEFI configuration to no avail.  Does anyone have any thoughts?

Hello.

After a restart of my computer, the playback of my microphone un-mutes, which makes it so I am able to hear what I speak into my microphone, which I don't want.

I am able to fix this issue each time by going to Playback Devices > Speakers > Levels (Tab) and then mute the microphone.

But my question is. Why doesn't this stay after a restart?

Hello. I have a new T450s with Windows 10.   I hit F4 and the amber light goes on showing the microphone is muted.  Problem is that it "looks" muted but it is not.  I have also gone in through the software to mute and it lights up the F4 buttton.. However, it doesn't actually mute the microphone.   So I can never mute the mic..  Is there a fix for this? I see others have had this problem in the past.Thank you.

A:Cannot mute microphone with new lenovo T450s

Same problem with an old E330. The problems started when upgrading to Windows 10 + Realtek HD Audio Drivers (or the Lenovo Realtek Audio drivers, just rebranded). Something in that combination breaks the microphone's ability to be muted by software. The button works ok, the On Screen Display shows the icon and it's shown as muted however still works.Muting it manually from within programs which use the microphone works as well, as does uninstalling the Realtek drivers and going forth with the default Windows 10 drivers (but then there's a loss of functionality with the sound - options).

The internal microphone on my Elitebook x360 doesn't work, it won't record.  I?ve had it a couple of months but only got the chance to start using it in the last two weeks.  It seems that there have been others with similar issues, so instead of start with the basics, here's what I?ve tried so far. In the 'Sound > Recording' tab (right click speaker in task bar) the internal microphone (Conextant ISST) is enabled and default (always was).  The green bars do not light up if talking into the microphone, but one or two bars will appear when I tap on the display. Internal microphone properties > Levels: microphone array 100%, microphone boost +36dB (max). I have tried other levels also.  The microphone does not mute by itself, as I read that others have experienced. Internal microphone properties > Advanced: have tried using lower default formats, exclusive mode: on and off, signal enhancements: on and off. In device manager, audio inputs and outputs: I have updated and then uninstalled and reinstalled the Internal microphone (Conextant ISST Audio) driver. In device manager, sound, video and game controllers: I have uninstalled, downloaded and installed new drivers for Conextant ISST Audio and Intel(R) Display Audio. The mic mute button on the keyboard (F8) is not on. In command prompt, as administrator, I have killed the svchost task in the name of the computer and then run Malwarebytes - did not fix anyth... Hi all, I have a Thinkpad x240 that I bought refurbrished in ferbruary. It was working perfectly untill recently I've noticed a problem with a bult-in keyboard. So microphone mute key stopped working and when I press down and hold left Alt key, microphone mute indicator powers on. Also sometimes Fn lock led stays powered on even though Fn lock is disabled. I've noticed this behavior after I've used logitech wireless mouse with usb unified reciever. Is there a way to fix this strange behavior? I've already cleaned contacts on the keyboard connector on the motherboard and cable, but it didn't fix the problem. Also it seems like it is not OS dependet, because it has the same behavior in bios/linux/windows 7 & 10.

I recently purchased a used ThinkPad X240 and the original owner removed the HDD. I didn't believe it would be a problem since I have a 500GB SDD. He instructed me that he had installed 8GB of ram and had removed the original 4GB, again... didn't believe it would be a problem. Turned the system on with a Live USB of Linux and was not pleased to hear three beeps twice, followed by a single beep. I opened the unit and removed the 8GB stick. Received the same sounds... memory issue. I read the memory and it was 8GB DDR3 1600MHz 1.5V. I called the seller and said this is the wrong memory. These units require DDR3L (Low Voltage) 1.35V memory. He said he was unaware and it's all he has. I went and purchased Micron 8GB DDR3L 1.35V. Installed it and no more beeps. Great! Problem... no video either. Pressing power the keyboard lights up, fan spins and power button plus I on ThinkPad lights up... then keyboard lights go out, fan stops and that's all she wrote. About 1 minute and the green light on power and red light on I goes out. I tried completely discharing the unit, removed CMOS, Internal and External batteries and then held down power button for a minute or two. Same results. Tried an external Lenovo IPS monitor, and nothing... just black screen. Tried F1 repeatedly and nothing also... just black screen. Any ideas would be appreciated, thank you.

I "believe" that the Lenovo part number you need is FRU 04X0182 (Backlit KBD Arabic Chicony Part Number 04X0182) but I only see one site online that claims to have one, and it is in the UK.     The part is not cheap, so I would suggest you contact them directly (see link below) and make sure it fits your exact model, but they do appear to have one left in stock, and can ship to Egypt. EAF Supply Chainhttps://www.eafsupplychain.com/Product/LV-04X0182 You might also search for the Lenovo Part Number/FRU  elsewhere to see if you can get a better price if you do not need it right away,  but the link above was the only one I found that actually claims to have one in stock.

Hello, I have a thinkpad X240. The Trackpoint button (nipple) has never worked since I've had it. The computer used to have Windows 8.1, however now it has been upgraded to Windows 10. The trackpoint button still did not work after the upgrade. I have tried updating the BIOS to the latest version, with still no change. The keyboard was recently replaced by a Lenovo tech as some keys stopped working properly, which means that the trackpoint button was replaced too. However, it still does not work. I have tried completely removing and re-installing the Synaptics driver from the lenovo website. The Trackpoint button shows as "Enabled" in the BIOS. Below is a screenshot of the "Thinkpad" tab in the mouse section of the control panel. I am guessing that there is supposed to be another option under the "Pointing options" dropdown menu which allows the Trackpoint button to be enabled.  If anybody has any suggestions as to how I can get it working, that would be appreciated.  Thank you

I noticed in Task manager, something is occupying my Physical Memory up to 96% even if I'm not running anything at all?? Sometimes a restart helps and sometimes not. To be noted, On fresh format install and first few runs, Memory stays on 600 MB used, like 25% in use. anyone has any idea?

Hi! I am experiencing a weird glitch that happens to my laptop keyboard.  Last weekend, I have discovered that only 5 and 6 keys work on the top row number keys of my keyboard. Also, F10, F11, F12, Home key and Delete keys don't work. Other keys are working. I have tried the keys multiple times but the don't register anything on the screen. I have tried booting in my linux system and the problem persists. I have tried multiple reboots, load optimized settings in bios  Upon testing the top number row, I have discovered that pressing 6, 7, and 8 key, simultaneously, registers an "equal sign (=)" on notepad, and 3, 4, and 5 keys registers an F2 equivalent click, which proves that the keys aren't broken.  Yesterday, upon booting up my system, all the keys seem to be perfectly working again.  However, last night (up until now)(out of the blue), the aforementioned keys suddenly didn't work again. Anyone having the same problem? Any solutions, guys? Thank you!

Hello, Fn key not function at all.  I've tried to swap Fn and Ctrl keys from BIOS, and then Function keys works via the Ctrl key, but the Fn key does not work as Ctrl. The keyboard just changed to new.BIOS updated to version 2.42Hardware scan test have conducted and passed with no problem found. I can see the light on at the Fn key when the laptop turn on. Really appreciate the help, it's really frustrating since i need to use the Fn key. Thanks and regards,

Hello everyone! I recently got the old x240 from my friend who bough a new ThinkPad. Unfortunately, the screen was smashed when he fell of the bike. Searching through ebay I found some tochscreens for this model, so I wondered if I could put the touchscreen on my x240, which is originally non-touch laptop. Thank you for your help in advance!

Hello community, I own a ThinkPad x240 and have an original 63+ (was it?) Battery in it. But when I boot I get the 0190 Critical Low Batter Error, booting with AC works fine. Windows says there is now Battery but after unplugging the AC it still is on and continues to be so for 8 or more hours. I trief the Battery out, AC out, press Powerbutton for 50sec.  Now I wanna update the BIOS to see if that helps, but without a Battery this is a nightmare.. Any advice? Greetings from Germany,Till
