Windows Media Content crashing computer

Q: Windows Media Content crashing computer

I am having serious trouble with my Windows Media Player. Almost every Windows Media Video (.wmv,.asf) file I try to play freezes my machine. At that point, I have no choice other than to pul the plug and reboot. I am using Windows 2000, and I have reinstalled WMP, have completely uninstalled it and then reinstalled, and at this point, it is driving me insane. PLEASE HELP!

Preferred Solution: Windows Media Content crashing computer

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Read and follow.. At the end of the articla there are instructions about how to remove all excess codecs and reset your system media playback back to the factory default. Please read the article though, that way you'll never have the trouble again..

So for some background I basically stream music, pictures and video content from my computer to an Xbox 360 in the lounge room for my family to enjoy. This has worked for quite a long time with Windows 7.

I installed Windows 8 Consumer Preview today and got settled in with it and indexed my libraries with Windows Media player so this could resume. But to my dismay this doesn't seem to work in Windows 8.

I have each folder and hard drive shared on windows for network use, I have a little experience from LANs in this area. I have enabled all streaming options in WMP that I know of and the entirety of my library has been fully indexed. This is WMP 12 and everything I possibly know of is up to date.

I haven't got the Homegroup feature active as I never had to use this before.

The only other thing I have noticed that has changed is this. A little green icon that in windows 7 would appear on top of the xboxs, I'm assuming this means something.

On the Xbox end it used to display the Libraries such as 'Recorded TV', 'Music', 'TV Shows', 'Movies' and other things but now when I try to access video content it gives me a folder called 'Videos' which contains nothing.

Does anybody know of any solutions?

Hey guys, I was just checking out the C:\WINDOWS\Media folder, and I found all of the normal sounds for Win. XP, plus 3 midi files called flourish, onestop, and town... They appear to just be tunes and jingles put together in midi formats, and I've never heard them ever. What is the purpose of them?

I think those are just some easter eggs Microsoft left there. They may have been part of some tour/demo features on previous versions of Windows (like the one you can find in start menu => all programs => accessories).

for some reason, windows media player like packaged 12 of my mp3's... i burned them on to a cd format and then recopied them back into another computer.. and when i tried to use find album info, it tries to set the same album to all of the tracks. like track one is supposed to tbe marroon5- harder to breath, and track 2 is suposed to be missy elliot-work it.. but if i click just on maroon5, and select find album info, it finds the "songs about jane" album and tries renaming harder to breath to the first track in that, and work it the second track in that.

could i have possibly copy-protected the music or something like that while burning a cd? is there a way of getting around that?

I have a computer I use for media, mostly it is just running windows media center. I then connect to it using an extender to watch tv and other media from my computer. Tonight when I tried to watch a show it crashed several times. Looking in the event viewer I can see that it is actually crashing quite a bit on its own. I ran the utility from the BSOD instructions and I'm attaching the resulting zip.

I downloaded the windows debugger tool and it is seeming to point to nvstor.sys which looks to be my nvidia motherboard. This is an older computer, and the driver through nvidia say they are for vista and windows 7; however, microsoft says that the motherboard is compatible. I'm in the process of downloading the driver anyway and I'll see if it makes a difference. Hopefully that is the only issue. If there is anything else anybody can add I'd still be appreciative with any help.

Welcome to TSG!

First thing I'd try is running System File Checker (SFC):

Click Start, type cmd, when cmd.exe appears in the list, right click it and click Run as administrator
Type SFC /ScanNow and press Enter.

Also, post some of the error messages:
Click Start, type problem reports.
Click on Problem Reports and Solutions when it appears in the list.
Click View problem history in the left pane.
Right click a problem, click View problem details.
Click the Copy to clipboard link at the bottom (nothing visible happens).
Switch back to your browser, click in the Reply window and press CTRL+V to paste the problem report.
If they all have the same info, just post one, if they are different post two or three of the latest.

Hi guys, this is my first post. I'm having some problems with Internet Explorer, Firefox, and MSN, as well as a possibly unrelated issue with windows media player. In the case of the first three, the program will load and work normally, but an exception window will pop up in each case saying that the program has malfunctioned (code 0xc0000005). As soon as I click on either send or don't send error report, the program will crash. Its probably important to mention here that if I do not click either button, the program will continue to work as normal, although the error window will remain open. This all started about a day ago after I was using a video editing program (Deskshare's Video Editing Magic). The program worked fine for a day or two, but then I received two blue screens while using it (the first time i've ever seen a blue screen in XP and i've been using the OS For years). After a restart, PCCillan detected and deleted 3 trojans, and Adaware took out several cookies and spyware. Virus scans are clean now and i've deleted the program and all of its files (that I could find), but the problem is still happening. i've tried uninstalling/reinstalling my NIC and the tcp/ip stack in case its a problem there, as well as upgrading IE, but it had no effect. I'm really not sure where to go from here....I suspect its a virus but PCCillan isn't detecting it. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hi guys, here's the scoop:

Everytime I try to run a .WMV file, windows media player says there's an error and it has to close. Running any sort of other file on WMP and it works fine, like mpeg, avi, etc. I have other video players, and I can open the wmv file in them and view them correctly, so I'm not sure what the problem is? Is it conflicting software?

Anyway, this happens in my browser too. If I page comes up with an imbedded media player video, the browser crashes and closes itself just like the media player does.

I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling, and it still won't work.

Any ideas?

Full Title of thread: Browsers crashing & Word Pads content (not files) vanishing due to out of memory problem

Short description

Hi Everyone!

For those who know me--this is the short short description (I purposely left lots of information out).

I have used in past year or so EVERY browser known to mankind.

IE 11--downgraded to 10, Firefox, Chrome, Safari, Opera.

Each time I start off, they function, "recalling" where I left off.

As I use it more and more often--they "forget" or "gray out" the choice of "reopen last browsing session"
Only way sometimes (most 100%) of times to "stop" jammed browsers is to press Power button off.
ONLY as I do that (no other time) Do I ever (is it clear??) Do I ever see a warning as the computer "crashes shut" saying "out of memory". Too fast to ever photograph it!

I do get "close programs to prevent memory loss" sign from Windows 7, but by the time I see that notice---its too late---the damage is done. Browser will forget all open tabs and windows & any open Word Pads will LOSE their content (the printed words)---not the file itself.

Thanks for reading me!

For more details, please read the description below:

A:Browsers crashing & WordPads content vanishing=out of memory problem

Hi Everyone!

This is my usual more detailed description of the problem.

I will repeat some of what I wrote before with lots more descriptions if anyone wants to read more details before replying.

It does not need to be said---as its assumed---of course I have no Virus or malware on the system any where and keep using tools/programs to make sure its that way.

Memory is fully utilizing the two slots of laptop filled 4 GB each= 8 GB maximum total for SONY VAIO Laptop VPC111FM running Windows 7 Professional x64.

1. I have gone through in past year or so EVERY browser known to mankind.
I upgraded and installed all the downloads for IE 11.

On your "competition" site, the Microsoft community----I spent weeks working with them why I had a problem --look it up there--- called it "graying out of the "reopen last browsing session" typeface under the pull down menu for "tools".

After weeks of writing postings, one member said they had problems like mine.

They recommended downgrading the browser to IE 10.

I did so using someone "one the phone" to help do it so I did it right, I know it was done right, they remote controlled the whole process.

Yet---after all that work---I still had grayed out "reopen last browsing session" buttons just like I had in IE 11, ever since first day starting to re-use IE 10. So strange since I clearly remember it was my "first" button I ever pressed upon r... Read more

So I just built this computer. It has been done for a little under a week now. I am relatively new to doing this kind of thing and I have been having this problem since the computer was finished. The problem I am having is that windows media player and internet explorer are crashing. I am running windows vista so it will pop up the little fix it messages when things like this happen. The fix it message reads...

Download latest version of NVIDIA nForce Networking Controller

This problem was caused by NVIDIA nForce Networking Controller, which was created by NVidia.

A newer version of this product is available that might solve this problem.

I have downloaded this and installed it but the problem continues to persist. The motherboard I am using is a NVIDIA NForce 780i SLI, as I said before I am running vista 64 bit, video card is a GeForce 9800 GTX, the processor is and Intel Core 2 Quad Q9450 2.66GHz, and I have a 500gb sata hard drive.

I would greatly appreciate any help/advice that anyone has to give. This problem is really driving me nuts

A:Internet Explorer and Windows Media Player crashing...

Can no one help me? Would anyone maybe know any other reason something like this would be happening besides there being an issue with that driver? I have noticed those little fix it windows can sometimes be wrong. I was having an issue with Internet Explorer a while back and it was telling me it was because I didnt have a program for "smart web printing" installed. I wasnt even doing anything with printing... I am having an issue with my PC. When I start it up, it goes to the user login screen as it should, but once there, 1 of 4 things start happening:

1. As I click on my user icon, the system will freeze when I start typing in my password
2. I get my password typed in, hit enter, then system freezes as login is processing
3. I am able to login, but my desktop screen gets all crazy (will provide pic shortly), then crashes
4. I am able to login, but system stops and I get an error message about ATI2DVAG (will provide pic shortly)

I am able to login in Safe Mode (which I am in now). I tried a couple of System Restores, but neither of those seem to have done the trick. From what I have gathered online, there may be a problem with a device driver that is causing all this, but I have no way to be sure.

I'm having trouble with WMP9, in that every time I try to play license-protected content it throws up a '... has encountered a problem and .needs to close, send error report etc.' error and shuts down. It also does this if I try to restore or backup my licenses from the License Management menu. It also causes all of my web browsers to crash if I try to access a license-protected stream in one of those. All other non-protected videos and streams work just fine.

The strange thing is that it was working absoloutely fine 24 hours ago. Since then I've run Windows Update and installed the updates that were there (10 in total, but none specifically related to WMP), so I think that may be what messed it up. I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling WMP9, but it made no difference. This is what it says when I click on 'see what data this error report contains'...

AppName: wmplayer.exe AppVer: ModName: wmvcore.dll
ModVer: Offset: 00118e84Click to expand...

I'm using Windows 2000 Pro with everything updated as I mentioned.

So does anyone have any idea what's wrong? It's really frustrating not being able to watch a protected stream which I paid for.

Four years ago when I got my Dell Dimension 8400 with Media Center I quit taping shows, movies etc that I normally and used my Media Center to do the job. Mostly I use the taped programs so I can watch as I please and some I have recorded later on CD (Specials). Recently I bought a laptop and hooked it and the Dell up to a network. Then I can use the internet and watch the programs I have recorded in the front room with my wife using my laptop. The last few days I ran into a movie I recorded from the AMC chanel. It works fine on my Dell and had worked on the laptop. This one movie which I wanted to play in the front room on the laptop gives me the message "Restricted Content. Restrictions set by the broadcaster or originator of the content prohibits playback of the program on this computer". I had already started to watch it on the laptop but was interupted several times. Is there some setting that causes this?. It plays fine on the Dell.

I have two systems, one running Windows 7, the other running Windows 8. They have the same motherboards, processors and tv tuner cards (Hauppauge HVR-2250).

In Windows 7 I can see all my local stations and the guide data for those. So I can record the OTA (over the air) content.

In Windows 8 w/Media Center, I can see and record all the stations, except one. On this one station, I cannot see the guide data and cannot record any content. I can see the content if I go to live TV using the tuner card.

The station changed their transmitter in November and advised everyone using the OTA signals to rescan for the new transmitter. This channel, a local CBS affiliate, also shows up in the series 9000 internet channels I see in Media Center, but have not yet been able to access.

So, does anyone know the current state of OTA content protection and if this station might be using it? I can find no other reason for the blocked guide data.

So, I decided to download WMP11 thinking this would be the most recent upgrade I could get. But, still having the same problem, although now it tells me "Windows Media Player cannot play the protected file because a security upgrade is required. Do you want to download the security upgrade?"
So I click on yes, and then another screen comes up, "The file or device that you are trying to use requires a component of Windows Media Player to be upgraded. Click upgrade to download and install the required component." So I click on Upgrade and the error box goes away but nothing happens?? Just says down the bottom right that it is still trying to open "opening media".
I thought maybe my computer was having a bad day and was taking ages to download or something, but I went away and left the computer for a few hours and still nothing had happened, and I have restarted computer and tried again but still same issue??? Can anyone help?? Thanks so much.

I am running a Media Server via my Cisco Linksys E3000 router using an attached USB hard drive. This device uses PVConnect UPnP. When I connect to this Media Server using my Sony Bravia KDL40Z5100, only the photos with resolution less than 720 are available. Similarly, folders containing only jpegs of higher resolution return "There are no items to display". However, when I use Windows Media Player to connect to this UPnP, I can see and access all my jpg photos of any resolution, so I know the media server is working fine.
Anyone have any ideas?

A:Sony Bravia Media Server problems with large content

I'm having the same issue with my Bravia KDL-46EX701 TV and E3000. Based on the following post regarding a similar issue with an HP server using PVConnect UPnP, the problem appears to be in the router firmware:

PVConnect is now Twonky. A Google search shows that issues have existed between Twonky servers and Sony TV's.

This started happening three days ago, and happens about once every day, and now, once every few hours.

After a certain amount of time, many programs will suddenly freeze, crash, fail to show a window, etc. For example, explorer.exe will become nonresponsive, internet explorer will crash, and when restarted, will lock up and become nonresponsive, windows media player will not produce a window (although wmplayer.exe is launched), and system restore will not display a window (although rstrui.exe is launched). Before the first occurrence, the programs work fine; however, after they experience that problem once, they continue to experience the problem. Also, they seem to be somehow linked; for example, if internet explorer crashes and fails to display windows properly/becomes nonresponsive, trying to use Windows media player later will not work either. I should also note that nothing is hogging the CPU during this time. However, some programs are completely unaffected. For example, Firefox 3.5.5 works completely fine, Office 2007 works fine, Process explorer works fine, along with most of my non-Windows programs. What I’m starting to guess is that there is some problem with my graphics related to parts of the operating system and programs close to it, but I’m not sure.

Most of the time, simply restarting the computer doesn’t solve the problem. I system restore to provide a temporary fix by going into Safe Mode and starting system restore from there... Read more

Whenever I insert CD's or DVD's into either of my optical drives, Windows Media Player as well as My Computer recognize that media had been added. The problem is, when I eject the media (whether it's pushing the eject button on the drive or right clicking as selecting eject) My computer as well as WMP fail to recognize that the media has been removed. If I insert a new cd or dvd, both my computer as well as WMP see it as the original piece of media. The other strange thing is iTunes is able to accurately determine if there is media in a drive or not.

Any idea's as to what is going on with my drives? I'm pretty sure it's just a software issue with Vista or WMP, since iTunes doesn't seem to be affected. I have no idea on how to resolve this. Thanks in advance for any help

A:"My Computer" and Windows Media Player doesn't recognize the removal of optical media

Just a quick update with things that I've tried. First I checked for errors on the C drive to see if a file or something was corrupt. After that didn't work, I uninstalled and reinstalled the drives, again to no avail.

Any input would be greatly appreciated.

Hi my parents have a Windows 7 HP laptop that keeps crashing when they use Internet Explorer. They are getting a black screen stating that their disk is overloaded and a dump is occurring. I have tried to read the dump files but cannot seem to get them to be readable even when I follow the directions from Microsoft on how to read them. I have attached the dump files below for review and was hoping that someone could help me figure out the problem. They have anti-virus software installed and running. Also the computer in general seems to be working fine except for the crashing.

A:Windows 7 Computer Keeps Crashing

Nothing definitive in the crash dump files, saw a VISTA_DRIVER_FAULT and that opens up a range of possible suspects.

But the main culprit might be, as you suggested, IE. Try using an alternate browser (Google Chrome and Firefox are pretty good) for a day or two and let's see if there are any further crashes.
Would be advisable to ensure that all major Windows updates are installed... click Start, type Windows Update, click on it above.

I have been having computer crashing problems alot recently. I did a factory reset on it to see if I could just purge the problem but it persists. A techy friend told me to look in my Event Viewer to find the problem. he told me to also keep an eye out for something called a 0 audit error. Not long after starting I started seeing a lot of errors with the event ID 1101. "Audit events have been dropped by the transport. 0"

He told me that was likely my problem. He proceeded to use smart words and such, but basically told me that windows has a limit on something and that I needed to go into a certain program to fix it (group policy editor). After I went where he told me to and I couldn't find it he asked what version of windows (windows 7 home premium) then proceeded to tell me that I was screwed and needed to buy windows 7 pro. in order to fix it.

Now finally my question, Is my friend correct? I just had 2 random shutdowns in rapid succession, even though I just did a factory reset a short time ago. I've had this problem several times but it has been getting progressively worse.

A:Computer crashing Windows 7

Here's some information on the event id you're seeing:

The rest of what you're being told doesn't any sense based on the information you've provided.

Shutdowns could be caused by hardware failures, software conflicts or over heating.

Can you provide the brand and model of your PC?

This started happening yesterday for no reason. I start up my PC, and everything loads fine. I then launch my browser and after a few minutes of random browsing, the browser hangs, and then it grays out and I get the "program is not responding" thing, but then I try to ctrl alt delete to launch the task manager to end it, but it doesn't pop up. It takes literally like 10 minutes until the browser re-activates and then I am able to use ctrl alt delete and end it. Then, I go to restart the browser and it doesn't pop up. I constantly double click it and then it decides to work a few minutes later, resulting in multiple browsers to launch at the same time.

Sometimes when I'm not so lucky, the browser freezes and after a while THE ENTIRE COMPUTER freezes and I have no choice but to hold the button to restart it.
I restarted it in safe mode and it works completely fine after that.

Scratch that. It ran fine in safe mode but messed up in safe mode w/ networking

When I open up a number of explorer windows (a number means more than three), be they internet explorer (Mozilla Firefox) or exploring my harddrive, the computer freezes and I have to reset. Any idea what it could be? My computer used to easily handle far, far more open explorer windows than it can now, and I'm fairly certain I have no spyware.

Hi Manoira,

Welcome to the 10forums

The driver you mention is the driver for the Qualcomm network device which is pretty old, an update may solve it.
