Hi, Anyone!

I am running an HP Pavilion p6540f. Two weeks ago, I started up my computer, and suddenly my cooling fans (all 3 of them) started up at high speed and never ratcheted down to their normal or lower speeds. I have already done the following to no avail:

1. I ran System Tests to try and determine if I had a software or hardware problem. All tests results PASSED.
2. I downloaded and ran SpeedFan 4.47 and received what appeared to be a High temperature reading on one of the fans at 127 degrees C. It's the CPU fan.
3. I called HP Tech Support to get help and found out that I'm out of warranty, but they were happy to tell me that my PC probably only needed tweaking from one of their techs they wanted to schedule to come out and service the machine for $200.00. But if the problem was a hardware issue, it would then cost more on top of the $200.00. I told them I'd get back to them.
4. I downloaded and ran PC Wizard and on checking the Thermal Tests run by that program it gave me back a report result saying my AMD Phenom II x4 processor was showing temps of 255.9C in each of my 4 cores.

I am now throwing myself on the grace and mercy of whomever might be willing and able to walk me through this scenario to try and isolate my problem.
I am not exceptionally tech oriented, but I'm a good student and have been able to fix some things in other computers I've had in the past without getting the "rip" from the Manufacturers.

Any Assistance would be greatly appreciated.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I noticed yesterday that my CPU fan was constantly running at a high speed.  I opened the case, saw there was dust in the fan unit, so I removed it and cleaned it.  That seemed to fix the problem.  However, it is again running at a high speed a large percentage of the time, even when the computer is not being used.  I fear some other problem. Task manager is indicating around 63% CPU usage pretty much all the time.
Any suggestions?

We recently got SBC DSL and a router shared between two computers. All of the online speed tests that I have run said my download rate was around 315 kbpsand the 2Wire site for my router site also returned a download connection of 384 kbs, but web browsing and downloads max out at 40 kbs. How do I get my browser up to speed? I am using XP and firefox.

I have a new HP Elitebook 850 G3. For the three weeks I have owned it, I can say that it is always next to silent, no matter what load it is processing.  I took it on a short trip for the first time and the moment I turned it on in the hotel I was staying at, I heard the fan for the first time. I am certain that it is operating at high speed and it hasn't stopped for two days now. The laptop isn't in the least bit warm and no matter what I do, or don't do, the speed remains the same...on high.  Aside from this, everything seems to be operating normally. Can anyone help? Thanks!

First question... Are they high speed hubs?
I have an older 4 port Dlink here that's never run 480... looking into the chip on the internal circuit board, it turns out to be a 12mbps chip... you can slow them down, but you can't scare them into running faster.

I'm on my second drive (returned the first...) and have come to the conclusion that I have a system problem.

I have a Yamaha CRW2100EZ EIDE CD-RW and it will do everything they claim except extract CD audio files to .wav files or pass any tests using CDSpeed99 (which they recommend in their manual).
I always get the message that there was a read error at 0:00.00 (code 040803).
When trying to extract using EZCDCreator (bundled software) I get the message: There was an error extracting audio from the CD.(04/08/03- "Unexpected Error").

As per their 1-800 tech I exchanged the original drive for this one with no change.

Master CD-ROM will extract audio and pass tests with the same software.

I have checked all the possible settings imaginable (I think) and am at a loss.

hi guys, firstly i'm new here however have always looked here for help with any issues and found what i have been after.

ok, so i'll jump right in.. I use my laptop to dj with 4 nights a week so as you can imagine it is very important to me and a vital part of my income.
a few weeks ago i had an issue where i had somehow picked up a virus and it forced me to do a complete format and reinstall of windows. however since then it has been running very hot and cpu usage has gone through the roof.

all drivers and bios are up-to date and the laptop is fully optimised for audio processing.

the specs are as follows:
hp g62 450sa
i3 2.27ghz
8gb ram
60gb ocz vertex ssd (with os on)
500gb 7200rpm hdd in drive bay (music only)

i have read that another complete reinstall may fix the problem, which i am prepared to do.. however onto the next problem, i left a cd walled in a club last week which had my recovery discs in it, when i went back the next week it was gone!!

has anyone got any ideas on how to get around or sort this, or is there anywhere that i can download a copy of the install discs. i have spoken with microsoft and they are willing to re-authorise my product key when i re-install.

sorry to ramble on, i appreciate its a big first post, but im pulling my hair out here.

A:cpu usage suddenly high and laptop running very hot

Before i reinstall i would suggest trying a few things first.

At the bios level check to see if the fan controller is set to anything except high performance. If your DJing in the club then i doubt you would care or notice if a computer fan was whirling.
In Windows Check, your event log and performance monitor to see if there is a history of application / system errors and what program is using your CPU up respectfully.
If you have long periods of time when you are not on a network then what ever antivirus/ antispyware / software firewall you are using if any should be disabled after completely disconnecting from any network. That will save your CPU cycles for whatever audio programs you need.
Also the last thing i can tell you to try without examining your machine is to run msconfig and disable any none essential start up programs. (eg. adobe acrobat reader updater).
If none of the above help then you can either toy around with it some more if you have a decent understanding of windows or you can take it to a IT tech person.

Very Recently, explorer.exe has been running at an extremely high CPU, even up to 100% CPU. I uninstalled most of my programs, certainly any such as Limewire, uTorrent, etc, and any other that I have installed recently. It has not changed anything. I have run scanners from AVG and TrendMicro to remove any problems, but they havent turned up anything special. Here is my Hijackthis log. I hope someone can help me. Thanks!

I read that defragmenting the harddrive can lead to faster access times, i tried it, but it has not helped. i am sure it must be some bad programs or something. Umm... I cant think of anything else to add.. except that im fairly technical with computers, and im surprised i havent been able to fix it this time.

I've tried to follow the guidelines for posting logs... i hope it did it correctly...

I have an Asrock Z68 Extreme4 motherboard that has 2 USB 3.0 ports at the rear. My external WD My Book 4TB USB 3.0 Hard drive will not operate at USB 3.0 speeds no matter what I do. Using USB Device Tree Viewer (which actually shows I have 8 USB 3.0 ports....hmmm), it always shows my external HD as "high-speed" using USB Version 2.10 and not "SuperSpeed" using USB version 3.00. I have a 32GB USB memory stick which inside USB Device Tree Viewer, shows it as "SuperSpeed" most of the time but frustratingly, sometimes this will only show as "high-speed" when plugged into either one of the two USB 3.0 ports. Sometimes I have to reboot my computer for my memory stick to operate at USB 3 speeds. As I said, I can never get my external HD to operate at SuperSpeed. This leads me to believe that it's not the fault of my external HD but something else.

I have installed Etron EJ168 USB 3.0 Host Controller drivers 0.115 and now 0.118 hoping it solves my problem. I have also disabled legacy USB 3.0 support in the UEFI (BIOS) and set legacy USB support to UEFI only. Power saving features of the USB ports are off too. Nothing is working, any ideas? I have attached two pictures to this thread for you to look at:

A:USB 3 Running at High-Speed (I'm Going Insane!)

Possibly 2 x 4 ports, 4 for each of the 2 rear physical ports.

Do you get the "This device can perform faster" warning pop up when speeds are stuck at USB 2.0?

I have been facing a strange problem from 2-3days. I recently shifted to windows 10 as my base system. Before that i was using windows 7 as primary OS and win 10 as experimental.

While in win7, i had a huge plethora of software installed and so many startup software as well but the windows kept running smoothly with processor running near to bottom in task manager (almost 10-15% with no activity) but in windows 10, there are 3-4 startup programs and nothing else is running in background. I am just browsing on firefox and task manager is running around 40-50% and fan is giving quite noticeable noise. It is not very high noise that i become alarmed but as compared to windows 7 it is quite high. Supposing if windows 7 was running at 10% of noise of fan (from 100% scale), windows 10 is running at around 40-50% of fan noise.
Well system is not heating up or giving any alarming notifications but i am a bit worried, as if it is normal with windows 10 and i should adjust myself with it or is it something really to be worried.

P.S, i have checked hdd health status with "hard disk sentinel" usb dos version and it is at 100%.

I have a new HP All-in-One and the CPU fan is running at high speed at all times, even when the CPU load is low. It's pretty loud and annoying. Looking at the BIOS the fan is reporting speeds of 2400+ at all times. This seems high for a PC just viewing the BIOS. Is this just how these PCs operate or is there a problem with mine?

Good day to all. I am using AT&T(sbcglobal) dsl. My plan is for the speed of 1mb and under. Now, I realize I am not going to get 1mb, the speed will be under. But the tests I am running are showing speeds around or under 1/4 of a mb. All these tests were run one right after another, at 5 different times of the day, from 8am to 11pm for 3 consecutive days. I have 2 computers running XP that I ran the tests on, and there are no problems with either computer, other than the internet speed. Here are the results.

Speedtest.net: download: 0.24mbps / upload: 0.32mbps

Speakeasy.net: download: 0.24mbps / upload: 0.32mbps

McAfee Internet connection speedometer: 200kbps

CNet Bandwidth Meter: line speed 224kbps

Now, when I run my ISPs speed test AT&T Speedtest, the test shows my speed is: download: 1.58mbps / upload: 0.31mbps. I don`t understand the large difference in speeds I am getting from independent speed tests, and the speedtest from my ISP. Now if I am to believe my ISPs speedtest, they are going to try to tell me I am receiving more download speed than I am paying for. I find that very hard to believe.

Since this is the first time I have looked into this, I am kind of in the dark about how much speed is expected exactly, but 0.24 seems on the low side to me. I know I will have to contact my ISP to look indepth into this problem, and that is why I came here first. I don`t want to sound like a complete idiot when I contact them. Hopefully someone can look at my speed... Read more

Hi all

I have just had the motherboard replaced in my Dimension 9200. The main CPU fan now runs constantly from start-up at full speed. Is there a way to turn the fan speed down through the bios? I can't find it.
The old motherboard was version 0 and the new motherboard is version 4....is this the problem?

I have reseated the processor with good quality compound and checked the fan was plugged in the motherboard correctly.

Any ideas? I am slowly losing patience with the thing!!

A:Dimension 9200 CPU Fan running constantly at High speed

I suspect this issue has been resolved but for anyone that has had a similar experience I will recall the similar problem I had (and resolution).
In short I had the issue, especially when system load was somewhat high, of my system freezing and the cpu fan spinning out of control - until I forced a shut down. All the posts I read gave the genius insight that the cpu was overheating and that I should re-seat the heat sink with new grease and clean out dust etc. I was dubious this was the issue since i monitor the cpu and it rarely exceeded 55 deg C.   In any case i did it all these things and it made no difference. I even ran stress tests on the cpu and could not recreate the problem. The only thing that seemed to make a difference was keeping the case off,  though this just made it less frequent.
It then occurred to me that it could be it may be the NORTHBRIDGE MOBO chip getting hot since in the dimension the cpu fan blows across it (so perhaps the cpu fan is designed to respond to the northbridge temp as well as the cpu). In any case i checked by touch and it was almost too hot to touch. In the absence of an on-board sensor this was the best measurement i could make. So I unattached the heat sink and carefully removed all traces of the thermal tape from both the chip and the heat sink surface. I then applied a little thermal paste and reattached the heat sink. I haven't had the problem now for a few days when before it was 3-4 times a day. I would ... Read more

CPU Fan recently (this week) started staying on constantly (louder, more noticable). It doesn't cycle down to a lower speed/lower audible/quieter mode/speed.  Have tried shut-down, reboot, etc... to no avail. Last night applied vacuum hose to back of CPU at fan opening (while CPU was turned off). Re-started and fan ran quiet for a few min.s, but then resumed it's louder audible operation. It also started audibly surging to a higher/louder speed when any activity is occurring on the monitor screen (i.e. opening and closing websites, etc...).I'm concerned that something might be wrong (or going wrong) with the CPU, in particular that the fan is going out.

Hi @FizzyLicious, Welcome to the HP Support Forums. From your post, I gather that your Compaq no longer boots up but the fans are starting and some of the lights used to blink but don't seem to be anymore on startup. Please follow the troubleshooting steps in the HP and Compaq Desktop PCs - Resolving Startup Problems (Windows XP, Me, and 98) document. It will walk you through the troubleshooting. I suspect that you are going to end up having to follow the steps in the HP Desktop PCs - Computer Does Not Start and Emits an LED or Beep Code document. If this post helps you to resolve the issue, please pay it forward by clicking "Accept as Solution", to the right of the Thumbs up icon. You can click the thumbs up icon to show gratitude! Thank you.

I've notice that on windows 10 and 8.1, task manager would show the my max cpu core speed is 2.3-2.4 ghz. However, my Core 2 Quad q8400 is rated at 2.66 ghz. I tried changing the power settings in windows and try lowering my cpu temperature, but my speed would never reach 2.66 ghz.

Should i be concerned about this or is it just a error on windows part? Also, i get different readings in Task Manager and CPU-z. Does anybody know a cpu benchmark that would allow me to compare my stock Q8400 to other Q8400s to see if it is on par?

A:CPU not running at full speed even at high performance power mode

I wouldn't worry about this one bit. The PC will use the required amount of processor power when it's required. And you don't need to run the processor at full speed all of the time.

I'm having a big issue with my computer and seeking all the help i could get. Many thanks in advance.
This issue started upon the first day of building my new computer. I did not care about it due to the fact that it did not occur that often. Maybe 1 time a month, not more. The issue did also only appear when running Alpha games, so did not reflect that much about it as it could be memory leaks etc in these Alpha games.
- Whats the issue? Computer freezes and the display turns black with the fans running on highest speed (All of the fans). Any music/game -sound in the background freezes and sounds like "Bzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz". This remains until i force a shut down. No Minidumps are visible as this is not a bluescreen.
- Something iv'e noticed and could be worth mention. The black screen got worse and more intense after i replaced my 2 screens with a brand new Samsung 34 inch curved display.
- I tried only a few things thats within my reach. Replacing the mems, resetting the bios etc. Nothing more.
- When connecting the computer to a low res tv (1920x1080) its working as intended, no black screen.

Once started back up there is no mention of any problem in the event logs other than the forceful shutdown.

I just wanted to know if anyone else has experienced any issues?

A:Satellite S50-B 15P - Fans running at high speed and system crash's

The only way to get it working again would me to hold the power button until off and start it back up.

Forcing shut down resets the fan activity and the performance?
Hmm? this sounds like there must be some kind of system issue? probably the some background processes locks the CPU and therefore the fan activity increases.

You could start the task manager and in the tab called ?Processes? you will find all background applications which would use the CPU.
Click on the CPU column to show all processes loading the CPU.

At the other hand you could also try to modify the ?cooling method? option which is available in Windows advanced power options.
Go to control panel → power options.
Here click on the power plan which is currently in use.
Then click on Advanced power options and navigate to Cooling method.
Here you can change this from active to passive.

Additionally you can decrease the max CPU state to 90%-05%

Hi there,

My computer has been running slow for few months now despite having a high speed internet connection. I have tried to fix it by having its set up changed. It didn't fix the problem. It was working fine but one day it suddenly started running slow. At first I thought it must be a problem with the servers of my network provider but that wasn't the case. I've called the cable company to check several times but they said other users were able to use internet in full speed without any problem. I noticed the problem by trying to watch videos from various websites and after this problem occurred, they started loading super, super slowly. It has gotten to a point that I can no longer watch TV shows, movies, and other videos. The only video website that works is YouTube and even that doesn't function completely normally. Only most YouTube videos work without getting stuck too much. Another thing which I must mention is that quite often the internet cuts off in midst of browsing sessions and it doesn't reconnect without restarting the computer. My computer is a Dell laptop pc with Intel core i5 processor. I suspect that maybe my LAN card has worn out and it needs to be replaced. Although, I have been told by some computer technicians to not to do so. But they weren't able to give me any solutions. So here are my questions:

1. Should I get my LAN card changed?
2. If I should get my LAN card replaced, what model do I need that's compatible w... Read more

I am not too clever when it comes to all these numbers on the laptop. But I was downloading a UK program and it's taking forever. I am downloading thru Megaupload via Firefox. I did a speed test and this is what it says. (By the way I am with Cox Cable),

DL = 13.36Mb/s
UL = 1.86Mb/s
Ping = 101ms

Is this okay? I DLd yesterday and it only took about 7 mins for a 30 min show ??? It's saying that this one is gonna be nearly 3 hours!

Better then what I get thru Road Runner. Pretty much double what I get.

The place you are downloading from could be getting swamped with requests.

I just did a couple speed tests on my computer.
The first one was 285pc Ping. 2.40mbps Download speed. 0.56 Upload speed.
The second test was 265pc Ping. 2.20mpbs Download speed. 0.60 Upload speed.
Are these numbers good? Thanks Ray ( hope I put this in the right forum)

A:Speed tests

With the exception of ping, they are nearly the same as what I have. Ping is a measure of time it take to get a response from a server. You could try a different server for different response times. However there are numerous reasons for fluctuation ping results, which could simply be a bad day.

Many of us (me included) are concerned about how "fast" our ISP (Internet Service Provider) is. Here are five different speed test sites in the US to help you answer that question. To get an accurate assesment of yours run tests several times at different times of the day and on different days.
If your ISP sold you a package with a download speed of, say, 25Mbs and your result is only 14Mbs, that's normal. ISP's advertise the maximum speed their network is capable of during a very light load. More users online and the speed drops far off the adveritsed rate.
In my experience with a wired router the available speed is divided by the number of connections to it which are active, I have no wireless so have no experience with that.

For best results clear your browser cache, cookies, temp files, etc. before a test.
The farther you are from the test server, the lower your results.

Speedtest.net This one has a map and lets you choose worldwide servers to test with.

Audit My PC

c|NET Cnet may go wordwide I don't know, it has options to check where you are, work, home, etc. and I got widely varying results with each.

SpeakEasy This is what my ISP (Comcast) uses when they are here for a service call, I thought it was because it always gave the best result, but not true after I checked on the other sites.

speedtest.net - I have pinged about 10 servers tonight, half in France and half in Ireland & UK. Every French server is pathetically slow in download and pings (28ms) and uploads are in the region of 4-5 everywhere, I am supposed to be on 11. Best was Virgin Media Croydon with 125MB (I am on 120MB at present) and 12ms ping (I used to get 7ms) with slow upload again!

I really would not put too much weight against what speed test results show. If you want to check what your Upstream & Downstream are. Run Shaper Probe.

Since I have installed W 7 my speed test results from DSL Reports are 1.5 Mbs. With XP they were just under 3 Mbs. I have tweaked 7 for high performance and low visual. Could it be because I only have 2 gigs of memory? It really doesn't seem any slower. In fact, it seems to run faster for the most part. Any ideas on this one? Thanks, John

There is a "Performance Monitor" application built into Windows, that you can access through Administrative tools in the Control Panel. This can generate all sorts of reports and diagnostics on almost every part of your machine. It is a very powerful tool once you understand how to use it.
Some google results for tutorials here.

My wife's Samsung laptop started exhibiting problems when she tried to upload attachments to web-based email. I eventually ran a speed test (on several different sites) and found that while the download portion of the test was great, the upload portion always failed. It actually seems to run but slows down and eventually times out. Several other devices using the same wireless router work fine. I've tried several things:
- Rebooted the router
- Taken down the firewall (Windows)
- Completely removed the virus software (AVG)
- Ran virus and malware checks
- Rebooted in safe mode with networking

All have no effect except rebooting in safe mode. Then, the upload works like a champ! So, it seems to me something is running that is blocking the upload. I've even went into MSCONFIG and systematically disabled services to see if any of them were the problem, again to no effect.

I'm pretty much out of ideas... Anyone help?

Hello all,
I have had various speed tests run on my Toshiba L875 with 4 gigs of Ram and a 640 GB hard drive. The speed tests are usually in the 75/35 range but even with Verizon FIOS they have been slow (upload speed has been). Speedtest.net won't even hardly register (getting like 40 over 3 to 5 for the download). I ran Malwarebytes last night and there were no infections but the system still is slow according to FIOS' speed test. I'm at a loss and need an option to figure out why this is occurring. Thanks for all you guys do.

PS: Will run another Malwarebytes scan now.

Think that really concerns me is http://www.speedtest.net/result/2438595996.png.

Hi:I know the answer to this will be simple, but I'll ask it anyway.
I have a desktop running xp sp2 using cox cable internet.I am very happy with the performance.
Just for info,I ran a speed test using Speakeasy and the result was about 12 mbps download.
Taking Johnwills advice from another thread,I did the same test using DSL reports. The result was 16mbps download. Both test sites are in LA.
I am just curious as to the difference and which one is closer to the true download speed.
Thanks for any info you can suggest.

A:Solved: Speed tests with different results

Hi guys:Well my download speed has been up and down like a toilet seat for the past week.Today both speed tests show download at 12mbps.When it slows,it is around 7-8 mbps, which is still ok but is noticeable to me.
I have sent an email to my ISP(Cox) asking if they have had problems in our area.
But my question now is,and I know I am probably being paranoid, but I am just wondering if someone could be stealing my bandwidth.I am using WPA encryption. Is there a simple way that I could check it when my speed is down.I am using a Linksys wrt54g.
Any suggestions would be appreciated

Hi everyone,
I'm NOT tech savvy, so please bear with me. We live in the boonies, and the best internet we can get is point to point radio frequency. I can't get answers from them, so I'm hoping y'all can help out. Our internet frequently drops out, although it remains fully connected. I can run a normal speedtest, but cannot connect across a single device. In checking CPU and memory usage, there does not appear to be anything running in the background. What's going on?

Hi there
on IE I get a MUCH faster result from OOKLA than with Firefox -- same server for test. Seems a lot of work is done by Firefox in loading ads or whatever which undoubtedly effects the results.

Anybody else notice speed difference using SAME server but with different browsers.

Just to check using FF....Yes it different for me to. In the top left corner it says "Beta". It's crazy different....but so freaking cool. I like it. In Chrome it's the old version. The results are almost identical for me and using 2 different servers from 2 different states.

I wonder why the Beta on Firefox?

I've been having this problem for 3 days now. I have a 5Mbps downstream 768kbps upstream dsl connection and noticed that webpages were opening noticeably slower and streaming video took ages to load. All speed tests I run show that I get around 300-400 kbps downstream even though my upstream is normal at around 600 kbps.
I know it is not my computer or browser since I've tried the tests on other computers in my house. I contacted my isp and they tested my phone line and said it was ok. They even changed the modem but it didn't help. I tried to connect using my isp's modem with router functionality and also as a bridge with my own router but I get the same results. The problem started happening overnight without any changes to any configuration in my home computers or the network. Today I noticed that I get much higher speeds (almost full bandwidth) when downloading torrents but as I said videos take forever to load and all speedtests show a very low downstream speed.
Anybody know what could be causing this? I suspect that it is a problem with my isp (perhaps with port 80?) but they say that everything shows up as normal on their side.

A:Torrents fast speed tests slow

DSL has issues with speed. I use to have 1.5mbps, then 3mbps and 5mbps. I even bypass the way DSL works in the home. You can do the same but take some time to do. Most you can get out of that is a much stronger signal. You tap into the main phone line that comes in like through a basement before it hits the phone. I use CAT5e with a phone jack box ran that to another phone jack box with a modular connector. That connector would use ultra phone line cable based on Cat 5e but for phone data. That would go to your DSL modem. It worked well. Now that I am cable modem I'll never go back to DSL.

Ok, to set the stage...I've been chatting with users who maintain that Windows 7 (just like Vista) is a bloated resource hog of an OS which needs to have numerous services disabled to attain performance levels equivalent to Windows XP SP2. The crux of the argument is typically on how Prefetch works and the caching of applications to RAM, thus not leaving large amounts of RAM free for the system and in generally just chewing up resources which are better left alone.

For this test, I performed the same steps on the same hardware. (In fact, I used the same exact machine). Here are the specs
* Asus P5QL Pro mobo
* Intel Core 2 Duo E8400 at 3.00Ghz
* 4GB Corsair DDR2-800 RAM
* 500GB Western Digital Caviar Blue hard drive
* Samsung 22X DVD Burner
* EVGA Nvidia 8600GT 256MB video cards
* Intel 10/100/1000 NIC's

In each instance, the machine was using the defaults as they come out of the box. Meaning that things like UAC, System Restore Points, Indexing, PreFetch and the like all remained on.

Test 1: Install the Operating Systems. This was from the first push of the power button until I had a desktop with no hourglass
Windows XP SP2: 19:19
Windows 7 Ultimate: 14:12

Test 2: Amount of time installing drivers after OS was up to eliminate all exclamation points in Device Manager
Windows XP SP2: 9:27 (video, chipset, 2 lan drivers, audio, ATK)
Windows 7 Ultimate: :41 (ATK driver from Windows Update)
