Windows 7 | Write-Protected | Tried Everything

Q: Windows 7 | Write-Protected | Tried Everything

Read ALL of this please before commenting a possible fix.

First off, this is a 32gb Sandisk Cruzer flash drive and it's USB 2.0, my OS is Windows 7 Ultimate 64x SP1

Things I've tried:

Using regedit to set the WriteProtect Value to 0:

I've tried formatting it through the GUI:

I've tried formatting it in CMD and I get no further than selecting the disk because it cuts me off at cleaning it:

I've also erased and rewrote the registry entry for the WriteProtect key, and I tried it with a 32bit D-WORD as well as a 64bit D-WORD. I have tried every recommended option for fixing this problem, to no avail. Some said to also put it in an Xbox, but when I do, both 360, and Xbox One, both say that nothing can be done until write protection is removed.

A lot of people tell me to "Flip the write-protect switch on the side." but they don't understand that it's a FLASH DRIVE and not a MicroSD card reader. My flash drive has no flips, no switches, no nothing. I have also scanned it with the highest rated anti-virus for the year 2015, which is BitDefender Total Security 2015. No viruses, no issues. I have done EVERYTHING I have found online even remotely related to this problem, to no avail.

Preferred Solution: Windows 7 | Write-Protected | Tried Everything

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Some flash drives do have a switch. I treasure the very old one that I have with a write protect switch. I have to use something very small (like a pin) to actuate the switch. But you would probably know it if your flash drive had a switch like this somewhere.

You might try formatting it via Linux.

New dv6-7000 laptop (Win7 64-bit) has a problem I can't seem to solve:  When using any SDHC memory card you cannot write or erase files to the card.  You can read the files just fine, but you get a "Write Protected" error when trying to write or erase.   The card is, of course, not write protected, and can be written to in several other laptop/desktop SD drives that I've tried.   And I've tried different brands/sizes of SDHC cards.  Smaller capacity regular SD cards work just fine.   I tried removing this device and rebooting to reinstall the hardware, but no help. The Realtek SD Driver shows as version 6.1.7600.16385 in Device Manager properties, dated 6/20/06.  HP's support site shows a newer driver version 6.1.7601.29005 dated 2/24/12.  When I download and run sp56166.exe to update the driver, it seems to go through the update process successfully. But the driver still shows as the older version in Device Manager.  And, of course, the problem still exists.  Any ideas would be much appreciated!  Hard to believe that a new dv6 laptop can't properly write or erase files from High Capacity SDHC memory cards.   Thank you!

A:dv6-7000 can't write to SDHC cards ("write protected" error)

I understand high capacity SD cards return the message they are write protected in your system.

I take it the write protect switch is in the off/disable position on the card since they work in other systems.

What is the product number?

NOTE: Do NOT provide the serial number.

What brand and model is the SDHC card?

My McAfee virusscan detected the [email protected] virus. I'm unable to do anything with it (delete, clean, quarantine). I get disk is write-protected error. I try to browse to the directory it's in and I can't see it. I've changed folder settings to show hidden and system files. I'm running XP and still can't see the folder it shows up in. I've run viruscan in normal and safe mode. Still can't do anything with it. I've included my Hijackthis log.

A:[email protected] and disk is write-protected error

You are using an old version of Hijack This. You are also running HJT from your Temporary Internet Files folder. It will not function properly from there and it cannot create and restore backups from there. You need to create a new folder in My Documents and name it Hijack This. Now Click here to download Hijack This again. Download it and click "Save". Save it to the Hijack This folder you just created. That way it can create and restore backups if needed. HJT will store the backups in the same location that it is run from.

Click on Hijackthis.exe to launch the program. Click on the Do a system scan and save a logfile button. It will scan and then ask you to save the log. Click "Save" to save the log file and then the log will open in notepad.

Click on "Edit > Select All" then click on "Edit > Copy" then Paste the log back here in a reply.

DO NOT have Hijack This fix anything yet. Most of what it finds will be harmless or even required.

Hello, and as always thank you to anyone willing to help. I've a dual boot configuration, XP Professional and Windows 7, where the 2 partitions/OS's are independent by use of a third-party (non-Windows) boot manager. My problem is that any external hard drive I use while booted into my Win 7 OS becomes write protected within a few minutes of installation; however, the same drive is fully usable--ie, not write protected--if used while booted into my XP Pro OS. I'm slowly losing my mind. I've checked the registry entry involving "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\StorageDevicePolicies" and it's as it should be. I've used the command prompt to check volume/disk attributes for the external drives and all of them are readonly clear. Honestly, as far as I know I've tried everything that over ten (10) hours of Googling could find me. Any ideas anyone? Literally, running Windows 7, within minutes of plugging in an otherwise not write protected USB external hard drive it becomes write protected. Every time. Thanks again for any help.

A:USB External Hard Drives Become Write Protected In Windows 7

I guess the question is this: What defines write-protection in Windows 7?The first thing that comes to mind for me is BitLocker. However, this service should only turn on when you tell it to. It should not happen automatically. It probably boils down to Permission issues...Try this:Inside My Computer, right-click your external hard drive and click Properties. Under the Security tab, look at the permissions. Click Advanced. Under the Owner tab, if your name is not the owner (it probably won't be), click Edit and make yourself the owner. "OK/Apply" out of all these windows, then open Properties again. Under Security again, click Edit. Give yourself Full Control. Apply, OK, etc...Check now to see if have the same problem. I hope that it works.Could you post the exact error message you get? I've never seen one, so I'm curious....

Hello rscadden!

This is unpleasant. I hope the following would help you.

1. Type cmd in the Start Menu
2. Select Run as Administrator
3. You should now see the Command Line Utility
4. Type in DISKPART and hit Enter ( here the values associated with your USB drive could be changed)
5. Type LIST DISK and hit Enter
6. Type SELECT DISK and the number of your drive which is write protected and hit Enter
7. Type in ATTRIBUTES DISK and Diskpart gives the information you need about your drive
If the first line is written as Current Read-only State: Yes, then the drive is write protected.
8. To remove the write protection with Diskpart, type the command ATTRIBUTES DISK CLEAR READONLY. If it works, it should be confirmed by the line Disk attributes cleared successfully.

Good luck!

What is the exact message you are getting. It may refer to the images you are trying to burn to disk. In which case right click on the image file and select properties and see what is checked there.

Also if you are using rw cds you may need to format them first. Your authoring software should have an option to do this.

Hi, I have a problem with a brand new USB stick, PNY 64GB I bought on e-bay about two months ago. It started working properly, I transferred on it about 20GB of my photos. I did not notice anything weird. The pictures were there and I think I could even move them on and off, like copying and deleting. After few days, when I wanted to erase them, there was a message that the device is write protected. USB? There is nothing to switch it for write protection like on SD cards, for example.
From that moment, the device once was recognized as inserted in the PC, other times it was not. I could not delete the images, I could not format the device and even the KillDisc software, after running nearly 5 days without a break could not sort this out. There was an error message at 99% of process and I could do nothing else than to skip it, which resulted in the problem persisting on the USB.
Now I cannot even view the files, despite after this treatment I could have seen them few days ago. The files, after I clicked on them, showed mostly unaffected photos in the views, but when I wanted to see any particular photo, all of them appeared to be damaged - there was a grey area on the majority of the photo, just a thin area of the original picture could be seen on the top of the picture.

I have contacted the seller with this problem and they offered me the refund or replace, even assured me that the item will go to the manufacturer.
However, I guess that there are phishers outside j... Read more

Hi! Just bought myself a new computer, a Acer Aspire 7730. It came with Vista Home installed, and merely everything was blocked. UAC, firewall, but worst of all I could not change the permissions for the folders on the computer! All new folders I made became write-protected as default and when I changed, it went back to it`s default state the same instant I pressed "OK". Tried "everything" including bringing out the hidden administrator account and using this. Formated the drive and installed Windows7 Ultimate, but the same godamn problem persists! I can`t even save while playing games because all the folders are write protected

Any tips how to stop this?

A:All new folders become write protected!

If by permissions you mean the Read Only attribute, you can't change it from the GUI. The folder being set Read Only won't prevent you from saving files into those folders, unless the program you are running is actually honoring the Read Only attribute.
You cannot view or change the Read-only or the System attributes of folders in Windows Server 2003, in Windows XP, in Windows Vista or in Windows 7

It's more likely a NTFS permissions problem due to the games not being properly designed for Vista/Win 7, and are trying to save files in the Program Files folder, which is now a protected location.
I'm not a Gamer, so won't be much help with any specific game. If the game allows it, make sure you are saving into a folder in your Documents folder, and not in to the Program's folder

What is the CD burning software you are using? CD-R discs are Write once media by default. Unless the first time you burned it you chose to make a multi-session disc in the burning software program. CD-RW discs can be written to more then once as long as you do not Finalize the CD.
Instead of using a CD-R you should use a USB Flash drive, or better yet a USB HDD.

What I've tried is to uncheck the Read only box. A message comes up to say the folder is write protected and I should remove it. Then I get the option to ignore all which I click on but it doesn't have any effect.
I've also tried moving the slider up and down on the memory card but that doesn't change anything either.
My other camera doesn't have this problem nor did the Lumix until now so can someone tell me how to remove the Write protection? I don't want to have to format the card and lose my photos, even if that would work.
I appreciate any help given Thank you.

I have a question as I have purchased The Tornado(tm) and transferred all the files from my old windows xp laptop to my new vista 32 bit laptop such as homework, excel files, music, photos, etc. If I try to edit anything it says its write protected and cannot be saved. Is there anyway to un-write-protect all the files that i have transferred? I have googled this question but to no avail. I would really appreciate the help if anyone can shed some light on this for me. Thanks!

Hello pest, welcome to TSF

Have you tried either

1. Right clicking on the files and unchecking the 'read only' box
2. Saving the file under a different name

Hi!

I have to format my SSD in cmd, and have tried this command:

"Attributes Disk Clear Readonly"

This should usually work fine in most cases, but the message I get says it's not allowed.
The SSD is my former boot-disk with Win 8 installed on it.

Does anyone know a command or e sequence that will allow me to format the disk?
