Q: Interesting Question

Well MS fixed "Error 80248015" ,  Thinking about it this AM how did they access our machines to apply the fix????????????????????

Preferred Solution: Interesting Question

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

A: Interesting Question

They didn't, the problem was created by an outdated file located on the Microsoft Update servers.
When the Windows Update Client on your computer tries to update, first it check if there is a new version of the client on the server and during that check it downloads a file that didn't pass the validation check because of the expired date.

Is it possible to send a fax over a cell phone? Hubby posed this question today. I can't think of a way it could be done, but promised I'd try to see if anyone here had ever heard of it being done.

A:Interesting question

A quick google search

Question: How can I send faxes with my cell phone?

Our fax software can send faxes with cell phone modems, as long as your modem can be seen from a COM Port on your computer, and your cell phone carrier supports this. You may need to call your cell phone service provider to ask if faxing is supported.

Is there a way to block someone from booting up a computer?

(I apologize if this is the wrong forum for this question.)

I have an individual who frequently spends time at my house, and I do not want her to have access to this computer. I'm sure there is a way to do it, but I don't know how. I've tried going to the CMOS screen on start up and setting a password there - It didn't work. I can't remember if there is a password command that can go into a DOS .bat file.

I have an Intel Pentium III, 500 MHz processor. The "brand" name is Pionex. I'm not sure of the motherboard type.

I would appreciate any insite on this problem. Thanks in advance.

How did she find a way around the BIOS password? Here's an easy solution: take the power cord off your computer and hide it. Works for me.

Good morning

I'm wondering. On my laptop i have a screen (duh) How can i use it to play xbox 360 or for that matter.. use it as a monitor for another PC...
What can i get that has good quality HD comp. in or VGA in. I have VGA out, but not in.....
SO can i get some PCI card to fulfill this desire? Or is this just impossible....?

A:An interesting question

The laptop screen is hard wired (digitally) to the laptop motherboard.

It's a proprietary digital interface that differs between makes and models.

It's not therefore "available" to use as an external monitor, even if you were to disassemble the laptop.

I was wondering if the following is possible or not.
I want to put a message box on certain folders. To explain, when the user opens a certain folder, windows puts up a message on the screen with a message like "This folder is out of date, please use folder 3." or something along the same lines and then open the folder when they click "OK".
I don't want to restrict access, I just want to give the user information when they enter a folder.

I have searched about a bit but I don't really know if it is possible and what to search for.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hi peoples
For security purposes is it safer to use the on screen keyboard in windows when logging into sites using your password etc.
For instance do keyloggers pickup this or is it hidden.
Just a curious question?

A:Interesting security question

It would help if you have a hardware keylogger but I don't think it would help if you had a much more common software keylogger.

one of the mucky-mucks got a new laptop today, imaged it, installed his custom apps, copied over his profile, installed all necessary software for his various apps, and the only problem I am having is that he wants his custom dictionary imported. Now, I know that with word it's normal.dot; I know this as I tend to have most of my office suite products pretty customized and back up the toolbars rather frequently, as I don't feel like re-adding a few thousand entries into the custom dictionary.

My question, however, is is there a place where office stores ALL of the custom dictionary stuff, as when he opens outlook all his custom entries are popping up in spell checker, and he understandably doesn't want to rebuild that.

I had thought that by bringing over his profile it would solve that issue, or rather had assumed it, as nobody has ever voiced that question before in 5 years of doing this.

So is there a central repository that office dumps stuff in outside the profile that I need to bring up to his new machine?

I connect to a hotspot with a USB dongle. I want to connect another machine, a Wii to be exact, in another room but it can't recieve the signal from the hotspot. I was wondering if there was a way to use the wireless router I have, which only has one input and that is ethernet, to somehow extend the signal to the other room? I have no way of plugging my USB adapter into the router. Can the router plug into the ethernet port on my computer and transmit what is being received via the USB dongle? Thank you guys so much.

A:Interesting USB adapter / router question.

Bridging wireless connections with a pc

Short answer yes.
I currently have a DLink router in one room, a gaming bridge in another room and a USB wireless adapter in a third room. The internet connection from my cable modem service is being bridged to the usb adapter which relays all the internet to the router. The router also communicates wirelessly with the gaming bridge passing along all that traffic.

If you can connect the WII to the router/gaming bridge(one ethernet port makes it sound more like a bridge) then connect the router to your pc using the ethernet port. Finally there should be two connections under "Start>settings>network connections" (assumes windows xp). Select the two connections (holding ctrl while clicking) then right click either and select "bridge connections". That should pass all traffic from your wireless USB adapter to the ethernet adapter.

I don't have a WII but for the XBox 360 bridging was prefered to Internet Connection Sharing (ICS) as it blindly forwards all ports and eliminates the need to specify what ports are necessary for gaming.

Good Luck

I have a couple questions about printing between two computers

i have one Canon all in one media printer that i would like to use between my two home computers... the computers are about 10 feet away.

First of all.. i was wondering if using a program like Remote Assitance or something like that where you can access everything on someone elses computer you could print on the computer thats not hooked up to the printer.

Second, is there anyway to send prints across the internet? i don't know if that makes sense so just ask for clarity if needed

i just dont' want to have to buy a router and all that...

I would like to know if it is possible to add the username and password information into a hyperlink so that as soon as the hyperlink is clicked it will go to the specific page and bypass the sign on screen.

The website in question has an .aspx ending to it. Have just found out i cannot post the exact site on these forums.

I notice this is an asp page and wonder if this is possible or not, I have 30 children accessing these hyperlinks at a time for a class and it would be helpful if each and everyone of them did not have to sign in.

On discord, its not uncommon for me to come across "Cursed MP4 Files" with strange properties.

I'm incredibly interested how the creators of these files were able to get their results and mostly I want to make my own "cursed files". Some of the properties I've seen are video lengths upwards of 13,000 hours long, yet still being 1 MB. I've also seen videos that have negative video lengths and videos that display the video length as 0, yet still plays a video.

How were some of these made? I can file share the specific MP4 files in question

this is going to sound bizarre, but i need the info...i have been sending my husband nude photos to his mediacom email account. i asked him for his password and he freaked out and said i couldn't have it. it seems silly, but why would he say no? anyway, i don't want his password at all, i'm just wondering if someone can verify something for me...my husband claims that he cannot give me his password because i won't be able to see any emails, as all his emails sent to the mediacom address are forwarded in 15 seconds to outlook express on his work computer. he claims that i cannot have his password because the mediacom email is for work, and others in his store have access to the address log in, but he says they cannot see my photos because they are going to outlook. how does this work? sounds odd to me. basically, even though on my home computer i can go to the mediacom website and technically log in to his account if he gave me his password...but i wouldn't see any emails?
this is what hubby says...and is outlook truly this amazing

mediacom doesn't delete the messages, outlook express takes them from mediacom, and delivers them to my inbox....It is amazing when you think about it.

A:question about outlook and mediacom mail communication...interesting story at least

If he has Outlook Express set to check for new mail every 15 seconds and to delete downloaded messages from the (Mediacom) server immediately then what he says is true. I've never used OE, but I doubt that you can set it to check for mail more frequently than every minute.

Like so many others before me, I have an issue and want help... And I’d be very grateful to anyone who can help...

So... yesterday, I believe, I was browsing around the internet... and I got the typical "This page cannot be displayed" error when I attempted to go to one of my heavily frequented websites. I refreshed a few times, as I thought the error popped up a bit quickly (and everyone knows that IE will, on occasion, toss that error at you for no good reason -_-)... but to no avail...

I shrugged, and went off to another of my regular websites. Same error. Now this struck me as odd. I refreshed a few times... both of these websites are LARGE websites... and generally are not down... one of them can be slow and sluggish on occasion, but very rarely down... Perhaps there was something wrong with my net connection? A few other clicks around the internet revealed that some websites would still load normally as though there was nothing wrong... So maybe just those websites, then?

I sent links to a few friends of mine over Yahoo!... all three of them said that the two webpages that would not load at all loaded fine for them... ...Even odder.

After a bit more experimentation, I discovered:

Some websites Will Not Show Up. At all. I get 'This page cannot be displayed" errors until the cows come home.

Some websites will display fine.

Some websites will give me 'page cannot be displayed' errors for the first several refreshes, then will... Read more

His recomendation of Ubuntu as an improvement over Windows makes all of his points highly suspect. :/

Not only would it contain all the problems of changing from win7 to win 8 (Completely new interface, nothing where it was in the last version etc, especially since he recommends the version with Unity enabled, an even WORSE implementation of Metro than Metro itself). I am home for the summer and having to put up with dial-up. This might have been tolerable if it wasn't dial-up and infected with dozens of pop-ups. I've run ad-aware and spybot to no avail and just today downloaded and ran HijackThis. However, a few interesting error messages came up that I thought I should at least bring to your attention before I copied the log to this post. The first message stated: For some reason your system denied write access to the Hosts file. If any hijacked domains are in this file, HijackThis may NOT be able to fix this. If that happens, you need to edit the file yourself. To do this, click Start, Run and type: notepad "C:\WINDOWS\System32\drivers\etc\hosts" and press Enter. So I just bought Windows 8 Pro. Everything seemed to work, then Windows Explorer wouldn't stay open, basically it went into a boot loop, but Windows stayed loaded. After recreating my user a number of times, I found the issue. Every time I log into the Windows Store, Explorer breaks. I have not found a solution to this (except of course not using the store), any ideas? I've tried searching online for a solution, but I haven't found anything. Most of the searches resulted in non-final-version of Windows 8 issues, but not directly addressing my issue.

A:Something interesting... A bug perhaps?

I won't mark it as solved quite yet. But I did find one culprit. Bluetooth, and it's onboard. So I uninstalled it (the drivers), things started looking better. I tried reinstalling it, and it went into a system/computer seemingly infinite boot loop. Luckily, I had UAC on and it saved me. So no Bluetooth. That's ok, it's terrible anyway. Windows installed some generic drivers, but I disabled it. For now Explorer seems stable, but I will let you know in a day or two when I have felt things out. Odd how it only showed up when I try to log into Windows Store.

I was not able to re-install, and faced a format. Sigh. Eventually it was revealed that my Windows System folder had been renamed to an exe, yet no virus was present.

Any ideas? Has anyone heard of this? No, I did not rename the folder, even in my sleep.

A:This is interesting!

It would be a trojan if the spelling is not exactly: rundll32.exe (verifying that those are Ls and not anything that looks like them.

ZoneAlarm will tell you what IP the process is trying to connect to and sometimes that can be helpful in determining what is happening.

Naturally you should run an updated antivirus scan, but we can also have a good look at what is running if you post the results of the StartupList program available here:

My bet is we will see the process trying to connect to your ISPs Domain Name Servers. I think that is what we've seen before, but I don't recall any answers as to why.

This has been the only real virus i have had.

My girlfriend the other day thought she would be clever and download a driver for my g15 keyboard which i had been too lazy to do lately.

So she went ahead and found a promising looking site with plenty of ads and free Free FREE!!! things to download.

So she gets what she thinks is the driver, it doesnt work, she gives up.

In a few days i come home to my computer with AVG showing a massive list of threats found and more being added every few seconds.

Avg labeled it as win32/virut.

clicked on start and every single icon was that generic windows "i-dont-know-how-to-run-that-program" icon.

i cringed, physically cut my network cable in half (i know a bit dramatic, but i had plenty of spare and to unplug i would have to move things), and went straight to google for info.

Discovered that format is the only way, so i went ahead and booted from bart PE and made an image my 1Tb of Progams and other data.

My question is, is there anyway to retrieve my data. It will be a fair few months of downloading to get it all back.

A:This was interesting

Reformatting a hard disk deletes all data. If you decide to reformat, you can back up all your important documents, personal data files and photos. The safest practice is not to backup any executable files (*.exe), screensavers (*.scr), autorun (.ini) or .html files because they may be infected by malwareware appending itself to the executable. Some types of malware may even disguise itself by adding and hiding its extension to the existing extension of files so be sure you look closely at the full file name. After reformatting, as a precaution, make sure you scan these files with your anti-virus prior to copying them back to your hard drive.~ quietman7 from http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/ind...t&p=1147299

I've encountered a very interesting computer where, no matter what changes are made to any profile (including administrator), upon reboot the computer settings and configuration return to a predetermined default state negating any changes made to the system.
Does anybody have any ideas about what could be doing this?
(boot agent perhaps)

A:Very Interesting

Scan your computer with Ad-ware, Spyware and Antivirus programs.

Also, it's a long shot, but disable System Restore and try it again.

The programs linked to above are only recommendations. If you have a better virus scanner installed on your machine, use that.

I'm brand new to this forum........ I chose techguy because it appears to be the best. Anyway........

I work in a small office with 5 PC's - all the same in model and configuration. Dell Dimension 3000 with Win XP Pro SP2. They are 1.60 GHz w/768 of ram. All computers are up to date with all the latest Win-updates, latest AVG 7.5 defs and ad-aware.

I have a server running Win 2000 Server SP4 with 512 MB of ram. The server has a very light load - just file sharing. At max there's like 8 files open.

So the issue I'm having is this: One of the PC's will hang for about a min, when accessing a folder residing on a mapped network drive. The MND of course is a shared folder on the server - mounted on the local PC. Now it only happens intermittently. When this occurs, I can hop on another pc and access the same file/folder with no issues.

My current solution is to log off the user, and log back on (under the same user), and the problem goes away temp.

This machine also has AOL 9.0 optimized. I hate AOL and suspect that a hidden spyware or virus utility may be running in the back ground and conflicting with AVG..??? Or the user profile is bad...???

Any suggestions?

Thanks guys,

viksays, welcome. Please print this out and follow ALL these directions carefully. If you insist on running file (music) sharing applications like P2P Networking then you will continually be infected by all kinds of nasties in the downloaded files. This is the new prefered method of virus/worm/trojan spreaders to get into your system and there will be no detection nor removal capability for days/weeks.The spreaders count on this time to do their nastieness and create new nasties that are not detected.Go to Add/Remove Programs and uninstall it.Go to each of the auto started applications by right clicking on the icon in the taskbar and either open the application or go directly to Settings then look for Options or Tools. Look for the option to auto start with Windows and uncheck it.Important: Create a folder on the C: drive called C:\HJT. You can do this by going to My Computer (Windows key+e) then double click on C: then right click and select New then Folder and name it HJT. Move HijackThis.exe into this folder as you do not want the HijackThis backup logs in the Temp folder that should be cleaned out periodically. When you run HijackThis from C:\HJT folder by double clicking on it and have it "Fixed checked" it will create a backup file of modifications to use if restore is necessary.Make sure 'show all files' is enabled:http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/tsgen...=&osv=&osv_lvl=Boot into Safe Mode by tapping F8 key repeatedly at bootup.More detailed ins... This stems from a thread I started last month about a bug, and with some guidance from Tosh, I sorted it myself. But. There's a new problem.

Previous discussion at:

This is the problem.
My Windows Installer Folder keeps filling up with files of size 117 Mb. They are msp files which relate to Windows Updates - actually they all refer to Office updates.

Now I can find them, I can delete them, but if I don't delete them, more and more or these files will pile up. 9 of them cost over 1 Gb of space.

Then I discovered the suspect: every time I turn off the computer, I'm told that there are Microsoft Updates to install. And when I turn back on, there is one more msp file installed.

My net searches suggest this is not a common problem because of the 10 "best" hits, none of them gave a hint as to why these install files (all with the same date in July 2007) would keep inviting themselves back.

Can anyone tell me how to deal with this crittur?

I'm not sure if this should go into the hard drive section at this point or not, but I'll start here.

I installed a software firewall (PC Tools Firewall Plus). After the install, it called for a reboot, so I obliged. Upon rebooting and logging onto my profile, I noticed things were running extremely slow--I assumed due to that firewall wanting access for everything.

After things didn't speed back up to normal, I uninstalled the software, which called for another restart. This time, however, my ~45 second power-to-login-screen bootup took well over 5 minutes.

Now, when I run a program, the system lags, but the programs open. I figured this would fix itself, so I went about my business. After a while, I decided to try another restart. Took about 5 minutes, again.

I'm not sure what's causing this, or if it would even be repairable at this point.

Any ideas? Thanks.

Oh, I forgot to mention. After the last reboot, I went to run firefox to come post here, but Windows told me it was corrupted and to run chkdsk. I haven't ran it yet, but even after a reinstall, firefox doesn't want to run.

A:Interesting problem.

Strange, after another reboot, firefox works fine.

I'm having a problem where when I open a new tab or a new browser window all together, sometimes it will load my homepage up. Other times it won't load anything, It will just say connecting forever and ever. I've noticed TONS of people having this issue when trying to open a new LINK in a new tab or page (which isnt my main issue, although that's also annoying) See, im having the issue when just opening a plain page. Why does it seem like no one ever has the problems I have? So annoying.

Anyways ive included a video link to a screen capture ive done of what my problem is. For those who don't understand what im talking about, as that seems to be pretty common since i can never explain clearly what my issue is. Here:

Simply try to delete temporary files

Steps to delete temporary files :

From the Internet Explorer 7 command bar, choose Tools and then Delete Browsing History....
In the Delete Browsing History window that appears, click on the Delete files... button, which should be the first button you see.
In the Delete Files window that is displayed, you are presented with the question Are you sure you want to delete all temporary Internet Explorer files?
Click on Yes to confirm .
The Delete Browsing History window may appear, showing you the progress of the deletion. When this window disappears, all of the files saved (cached) from your Internet browsing activities will have been removed.
Click Close in the Delete Browsing History window to complete the process and return to Internet Explorer.

Also check Tab setting

Open IE click on Tools and select internet options

As the debate rages on about what the future of the Desktop is and Win32 code and if WinRT will supersede it, I found this out just now. The OneDrive app in Windows 8.1.1 is not a true and true WinRT app from the looks of it; nor is the Photos app or PC Settings. They are all Win32 based apps that mesh into the Modern UI WinRT environment with the system contracts (Charms bar) but are a Win32 system resource.

This is quite interesting as if I'm correct, this means Win32 code can function in Modern UI and can potentially have the power of what is expected of and used in the Desktop UI. The WinRT apps like Xbox Music are genuine WinRT apps that use certain system functions like wwahost.exe from the System32 folder, but the actual junk of the app is kept hidden away from the file system.

So what could this mean? Sandboxed Win32 programs that can take full function of modern inputs, design, and functions that older Win32 Desktop code can't handle. This could mean instead of porting Desktop apps to WinRT and figuring out how to work around a lot of the newer standards (which some seem arbitrary to me), much of existing Win32 code can be kept, reshaped, or recycled and brought over into the modern UI framework like the Charms bar, app snap, instant suspend and resume, and tombstoning. This could mean VMWare could be developed as what would be considered a Windows 8 style app, or Photoshop, or Lightroom, or AutoCAD, or Zune, or Office, or Steam, or cgminer, or audio editing prog... Hello all.A friend of mine asked me to work on their families Acer Aspire Switch 10. She also gave me a USB recovery thumb drive she purchased from Acer after their technical support charged her to diagnose the issue because the computer would not boot. She thought they could fix themselves, so she bought the thumb drive. They could not get the USB eRecovery thumb drive to boot, so they called me. I went into the UEFI bios and set the boot sequence to boot from the USB HDD. The Memorex Mentor Media eRecovery thumb drive she purchased from Acer booted fine. After clicking on "OK" we see a blue screen for about 5-7 minutes. Then we see:Then we see this:Then we see this:And that's it. I work on a lot of computers so I made a bootable thumb drive formatted GPI+EFI, FAT32 to work with the Aspire's UEFI bios. The USB thumb drive has an Windows 8.1 ISO on it. I used my bootable thumb drive and booted back into the Aspire. Then using recovery console went in and looked at the disk properties of the flash drive (hard drive) of this tablet. Heres what I found.Note: Disk 0 has 4 partitions. The problem looks to be the formatting of the drive. Volume 0 the C drive is shown as RAW. Both the hidden drives show to be RAW. The thumb drive sold to these folks by Acer to reset this unit to factory settings, can't or won't create or properly read the partition data on the flash hard drive since it is RAW.
