XP System Properties Question

Q: XP System Properties Question

If I go to system properties and click on the general tab it gives me info about the comp[uter system. Everything is correct except that under Computer it says that the CPU is an unknown type. Everything is working great but this bugs me. I would swear that I read somewhere about this and possibly how to correct it.

I have looked every where and no luck on finding any info.

Hope someone knows about it.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hi. I'm on Windows XP Home.

I would like to prevent an installer from deleting files that it puts in a particular folder. Is this possible? The installer encounters an error at the end of the process and deletes everything. It was suggested to me that if I could find a way to "keep" the files, I would be able to get things working.

Any ideas?

A:Folder Properties question.

If the installer choses to delete all the files after the error then there is no way to keep them. Unless you know how to re-write the installer exe file but i wouldnt suggest that.

when i right click on a photo. and click on properties. and when the window pops up i noticed that where it says created, modified and accessed. the dates all the same. shouldn't they be different. i thought where its says created should say the date i put it in the pc?

A:Right click/properties question

The only thing that I've seen, if you copy the file, the copy will get a new created date. The same when downloading from your camera. Move the files(not a good idea) and the date the photo was taken is the Created Date. Copy them and you get today's date.

Have you copied or edited the photos?

Hi, when I right-click the folder with my music to see how many files (MP3) there are, i always get an incorrecnt amount (higher than the real number).
For example, if i manually count it all, i get 1,546 files, but in the Properties it shows 1,784 files. Can anyone explain why is that?

P.S. When I open my Music Organiser, it shows the correct number of music files...

Cheers ;)

Hello, I'm new here... need some assistance for my Windows... After I updated to Service Pack 1 from Windows Update (online update), I founded there's no OS name and OS version in System Properties like usual. Same with System Information.

Is there any solution for this? Thanks before...

A:missing OS name in system properties and system information

Hello tridentcore and welcome to Seven Forums.

I noticed from your snips that System Information (snip # 2) does show under Version that SP1 was in fact installed. So at least part of your system is showing correct information. Have you completely shut down your system and rebooted since you did the SP1 update? (Not just a restart.) And your English is fine!

This is a long story. I will appreciate every single effort to fix any kind of mistake I could have made on any of the following steps.

- Original problem: explorer.exe suddenly stopped working. Just the background wallpaper displayed: no desktop shortcuts, no Start bar. Opening the Task Manager, no explorer.exe process was displayed whatsoever, and I was not able to execute it by using the Run command (absolutely nothing happened after typing the explorer.exe command and pressing Enter). The first thing I tried was to use the System Restore feature, and I had access to it: however, the process was never successfully completed because, immediately after restarting the computer and before booting anything, the blue screen of death was displayed with a non-specific "Fatal Error" message.
- Immediately after, I accessed Safe Mode with Networking and scanned my computer for all kinds of viruses/malware/spyware by using Norton Antivirus and freeware programs. Several threats were found, some of them involving Registry files. Permanently deleted all kind of threats, because most of them could not be quarantined or fixed. I thought this could be a Vundo infection, and I ran VundoFix; however, I disabled System Restore feature from the System Restore tab at System properties because Vundo usually interferes with this function. No Vundo infection was found.
- Still not able to run explorer.exe out of Safe Mode. Followed the advice at:

On discord, its not uncommon for me to come across "Cursed MP4 Files" with strange properties.

I'm incredibly interested how the creators of these files were able to get their results and mostly I want to make my own "cursed files". Some of the properties I've seen are video lengths upwards of 13,000 hours long, yet still being 1 MB. I've also seen videos that have negative video lengths and videos that display the video length as 0, yet still plays a video.

How were some of these made? I can file share the specific MP4 files in question

After copying folders, containing files and documents, from W98 or W2000 to XP, via Windows Explorer, I sometimes find these files have picked up the "Read-Only" attribute.

This causes editing problems. So in Windows Explorer I right click and select "Properties" on a folder (some of these folders have sub-folders, and hundreds of files, documents with various extensions in them). The box next to "Read-Only" is usually grayed with a check mark in it (meaning some files are not read-only).

I uncheck the "Read-Only" box and hit apply. I'm then given a choice between un-Read-Onlying just this folder or Un-Read-Onlying the folder and sub-folders. I always select the sub-folder option. A progress bar appears and it looks like the attribute is being changed to uncheck "Read-Only" from all the files in the folder and sub-folders.

But not so. I go to edit a file or document and too many times I get the "Read-Only" message. Why doesn't XP deliver on unchecking "Read-Only"?

I have a windows xp question regarding system properties. I am working on a new machine I built, it has windows xp home installed on it. It has a 2.66 P4 cpu, and 512 mb of ram installed in it. The question I have is under system properties on the general tab where at the bottum it lists the CPU speed and the amount of RAM in your machine. It says Intel(R) Pentium(R) 4 CPU 2.66Ghz then right underneath it it says 2.00 Ghz and says 480 Mb or RAM below that. What does that mean? Does this mean it recognizes the 2.66 ghz cpu but is only running at 2 ghz? If anyone knows what this means I'd really appreciate a way to fix this. Thanks.

A:System Properties

Not real sure about Intel processors. I have not used on in years. But I would check to make sure it is not an issue with your Bios. You may need to upgrade your bios. I had a similar issue with my AMD cpu. It said unknown cpu in system properties. I would check your bios to see what it is posting it as.

I would then download Intel CpuID utilitiy and see what it says.

I recently went through the Malware forum to get rid of some nastiness on my machine...and there appears to be one small casualty left to fix. I cannot get into System Properties any of the "normal' ways...

-When I right click on "Computer" I do see "Properties" I click on it and the explorer window flashes once (like something tried to happen)
-When I right click on "Computer" in the start menu, the start menu disappears (like it does when you open something)
-When I use the keyboard shortcut (Windows key + Pause/Break) nothing happens.

The only way I CAN get to system properties is by using the run command: "sysdm.cpl"

Does anyone know what the cause of this is? A deleted registry maybe?

A:system properties

What AntiVirus are you running?

Exactly what did the alert say?

Note that some viruses cannot be removed normally, even if you are running a good AntiVirus like Norton.

Did the virus description give you a specific filename (like filename.DLL or .EXE)?

Open My Computer and Search your entire C: for the file. IF found, write down the path (you could copy/paste to Notepad and save for later).

Now reboot to the Safe Mode (key [F8] just before the Starting Windows displays).

In Safe Mode open My Computer and navigate to the location of the file and delete it. IMPORTANT - IF the file is in a unique folder, you may want to delete the entire folder.

Now reboot normally.

Oh i can not get system restore to open but it works in safe mode not in regular mode.

A:Need help system protection not there on system properties

Welcome to Seven Forums.

Run Regedit and check the following registry key:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Windows NT\SystemRestore\DisableSR.

If the key is present and has any value other than 0 then system restore is disabled and the system protection tab will be hidden.

Viruses often disable this by setting this registry key. Often they will also disable the task manager and regedit too.

If you get a message saying regedit has been disabled by your administrator then it's quite possible you have been targeted by a virus, in which case a full scan of your system is a good idea.

As always, before making changes to your registry, back it up.

A recent problem that I have experienced is that, everytime I try to open certain control panel options a window opens, then closes just as quickly. It does this everytime I try to open these control panel items:

Backup and Restore Centre
Default Programs
Ease of Access Centre
Network and Sharing Centre
Parental Controls
Performance Information and Tools
Power Options
Speech Recognition Centre
User Accounts
Welcome Centre
Windows Anytime Upgrade
Windows Sideshow
Windows Update

To fix this problem I have already tried:

Rebooting the computer
Virus Scan
System Restore (I used my Vista disc for this one as I can't open the Backup and Restore Centre on my computer at the moment).

These methods have been ineffectual.

The most recently I used any of the services listed above was Monday April 20 on which I used the Network and Sharing Centre. I first noticed the problem yesterday (Thursday April 24), after I fixed a startup issue using "Startup Repair" (found on the vista disc) I tried to open system properties to no avail.

My current system:

OS: Windows Vista Home Premium 64bit
CPU: Intel Quad Core 6600 @ 2.6GHz
RAM: 4GB DDR2 @ 800MHz
More details available on request.

Please could someone help me solve this problem?

The computer I am having problems with is in my office as part of a small workgroup network (dental office). The computer is a Dell Optiplex 745 running windows XP professional.

I first noticed this problem as I was trying to change my network adapter to allow to wake from standby without the "only allow management stations" options checked off. I would uncheck this box and everything would be fine until the system was restarted and the same thing would happen again. I am the administrator and have access to all users/administrators of the workgroup. I noticed today that it seems to be that no changes in "system properties" are permanent on this computer because the "apply" button is always grayed out and can not be pressed.

I can't find the answer anywhere and it is real important for me to be able to access this computer from home using LogMeIN.com. Right now I can make it work fine if I remember to uncheck the box to "only allow management stations to bring the computer out of standby " before placing the computer into standby but it would be nice for this setting to be permanently registered.

I've tried unsuccessfully for the last several days to resolve this, various scans, I tried to go back to an earlier restore point and they have all gone except for onces from 3 days ago...very odd. I am not sure when this problem occurred either. My IE is also giving me fits, it will not allow me to certain regular sites like Yahoo and it just hangs and does nothing. New to the forums. Hello! ^_^

I found a site with something called Resource Hacker, and I used it quite a bit to remove simple things, and add things. (Ex. the Shut Down Computer command at the bottom of the context menu on the desktop for easy shut downs)

However a few days ago I found a tutorial that stated that I could tweak the file named "systemcpl.dll" (In order to move the logo in my system properties from view) (The properties after right clicking "Computer")

After changing one line in the file and replacing it after compiling the script in the System32 and SysWOWx64 folders, I restarted my laptop and tried to go to system properties. However, once I looked, it stated "The page has failed to load."

I need/want to fix this! Please help if possible. Or some suggestions would be very much appreciated. So far, I haven't had problems with anything at all, and everything seems normal on my laptop. However just not seeing my properties is kinda annoying. Even though I do know what it'd say anyway.

Thank you! ^w^

I have a Dell XPS M1710. Processor Centrino Duo T7200. I looked through lots of discussion and ran the Windows 7 upgrade advisor, etc. It showed that the system was 64-bit compatible and everything was able to be upgraded. We purchased RAM to take the system from 2gb to 4gb, which Dell system suggestions said it was able to be upgraded to as well. Did a clean install to upgrade from Vista 32-bit to Vista 64-bit and everything is fine. However, I notice that in the system area it says that the system has 4 gb of ran, but only 3.25 is usable. When I go into the BIOS under memory it says "Due to an amount of memory being assigned for system use, Memory Available is less than Memory Installed." It also says that it cannot be changed. If the system is able to go up to 4gb of RAM according to Dell, and I now have a 64-bit operating system, why am I still not getting use out of all 4 gb of RAM? Is there a way to resolve this? (I apologize in advance if I put this in the wrong forum section or if this was already in the forum and I could not find it.)

I can't get rid of it unless I click outside of it. I can't x it out either. Further, there is no data in the box and it is blank. I definitely need systems properties to be available as it is a critical component.

A:System Properties box freezes

I looked at your speccy report and did not find anything unusual but I would download Kaspersky TDSS killer and see if it finds anything.
