Computer suddenly slow, lagging

Q: Computer suddenly slow, lagging

Hi all,  As of the past few days my laptop (Dell XPS 13) has suddenly become slow.  For example, when I minimize or restore a browser tab it "hangs" or lags for a little bit before opening or closing.  It's nothing serious but since it wasn't doing this a few days ago I thought I'd check it out. Thanks! Scan result of Farbar Recovery Scan Tool (FRST) (x64) Version:05-06-2016 02Ran by Jeff (administrator) on JEFF-PC (05-06-2016 14:22:31)Running from C:\Users\Jeff\DownloadsLoaded Profiles: Jeff (Available Profiles: Jeff)Platform: Windows 10 Home Version 1511 (X64) Language: English (United States)Internet Explorer Version 11 (Default browser: Chrome)Boot Mode: NormalTutorial for Farbar Recovery Scan Tool: http://www.geekstogo.com/forum/topic/335081-frst-tutorial-how-to-use-farbar-recovery-scan-tool/ ==================== Processes (Whitelisted) ================= (If an entry is included in the fixlist, the process will be closed. I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

Greetings bwee and to BleepingComputer's Virus/Trojan/Spyware/Malware Removal forum. My name is Oh My! and I am here to help you! Now that we are "friends" please call me Gary.If you would allow me to call you by your first name I would prefer to do that.===================================================Ground Rules:First, I would like to inform you that most of us here at Bleeping Computer offer our expert assistance out of the goodness of our hearts. Please try to match our commitment to you with your patience toward us. If this was easy we would never have met. Please do not run any tools or take any steps other than those I will provide for you while we work on your computer together. I need to be certain about the state of your computer in order to provide appropriate and effective steps for you to take. Most often "well intentioned" (and usually panic driven!) independent efforts can make things much worse for both of us. If at any point you would prefer to take your own steps please let me know, I will not be offended. I would be happy to focus on the many others who are waiting in line for assistance. Please perform all steps in the order they are listed in each set of instructions. Some steps may be a bit complicated. If things are not clear, be sure to stop and let me know. We need to work on this together with confidence. Please copy and paste all logs into your post unless directed otherwise. Please do not re-run any programs I suggest. If you encounter problems simply stop and tell me.When you post your reply, use the button instead. In the upper right hand corner of the topic you will see the button. Click on this then choose Immediate E-Mail notification and then Proceed and you will be sent an email once I have posted a response. If you do not reply to your topic after 5 days we assume it has been abandoned and I will close it.When your computer is clean I will alert you of such. I will also provide for you detailed information about how you can combat future infections.I would like to remind you to make no further changes to your computer unless I direct you to do so.===================================================Now that I am assisting you, you can expect that I will be very responsive to your situation. If you are able, I would request you check this thread at least once per day so that we can try to resolve your issues effectively and efficiently. If you are going to be delayed please be considerate and post that information so that I know you are still with me. Unfortunately, there are many people waiting to be assisted and not enough of us at BleepingComputer to go around. I appreciate your understanding and diligence.Thank you for your patience thus far. Is this behavior exclusively related to browser activity or does it occur running other programs? Please do this.===================================================Farbar's Recovery Scan Tool - Run Fix in Normal or Safe Mode--------------------Press the Windows key + r on your keyboard at the same time. Hey guys, I'm hoping I can get some advice on figuring out why my computer has started lagging all the time. I'm running Vista on a 2-year-old Dell laptop, and up until a few weeks ago, it was running at a reasonable speed. Now the computer hangs constantly; even if I only have Notepad open, the processor randomly jumps to 100% on and off while I'm working. It's impossible work in more than one program at a time, or even more than one tab in a browser, as the screen freezes while the other window is loading. When I open the Task Manager, it looks like normal processes are taking up way more resources than usual (especially Safari's WebKit2WebProcess part of the program, when it's running.)

If I restart, things run a *little* better for maybe an hour, but quickly go back to lagging. It's currently in the "slightly better" stage, as I don't know if I'd even be able to run Hijack This during a high lag time.

Nothing has changed in the meantime, except that I updated the Dell Support program in the hopes that it might help some of the issues. (No dice. In fact, that program keeps updating things without prompting, sigh.) Neither McAfee nor Spybot are telling me anything, but maybe someone else can make sense of the Hijack This info.

I was listening to iTunes and surfing the Internet like I've done a thousand times before. Suddenly my iTunes music started lagging and the Internet got really slow, out of nowhere. I turned my computer off and on and uninstalled chrome as I thought the problem might have something to do with the web browser. If anything, I think it got worse! My computer is so slow that I had to turn it off before I threw the whole thing in the wall out of frustration!

I am not technical at all and I have no idea what the problem might be. I didn't get any messages from my virus protector that it was a virus but I noticed that when I pressed CTRL+ALT+DEL the processes were running at 100% the whole time which I assume isn't good.

Any help would be highly appreciated! And I'm also sorry of this is in the wrong forum as I have no idea what's wrong.

Hi,

I am using an HP dv6338se laptop.

AMD TurionX2 1.8 GHz
2GB RAM
Vista Ultimate SP1

Very Recently, explorer.exe has been running at an extremely high CPU, even up to 100% CPU. I uninstalled most of my programs, certainly any such as Limewire, uTorrent, etc, and any other that I have installed recently. It has not changed anything. I have run scanners from AVG and TrendMicro to remove any problems, but they havent turned up anything special. Here is my Hijackthis log. I hope someone can help me. Thanks!

I read that defragmenting the harddrive can lead to faster access times, i tried it, but it has not helped. i am sure it must be some bad programs or something. Umm... I cant think of anything else to add.. except that im fairly technical with computers, and im surprised i havent been able to fix it this time.

I've tried to follow the guidelines for posting logs... i hope it did it correctly...

Hi most helpful techies. My computer now starts to lag all of a sudden and I'm not sure why. I haven't done any hardware chages for over a month. I only noticed by computer start to lag AFTER I did a LiveUpdate for NAV 2003. As soon as the updates were installed it began to lag. When I say lag, I mean noticeably. Applications would take a few minutes to open instead of seconds. I suspected foulplay so I ran a virus scan. Lo and behold I had the Trojan.ByteVerify bug. I've gotten this bug before and I would figure NAV's auto protect would catch it before I had to MANUALLY scan my system to find it. I let NAV destroy the virus. I turned off System Restore and then I rebooted in safe mode and performed another scan and it came up clean. I rebooted back to normal mode and it still lags, but only after the computer is idle for about 5 minutes. I decided to uninstall NAV2003 hoping it would solve the problem. It was no use. After this I ran another virus scan in safe mode just to be safe on TrendMicro's free online scan and that came up clean as well. I returned to normal mode. Then I ran Ad-aware and Spybot S&D and got rid of some spyware. I've also ran HijackThis (Please see below). My computer still lags after idling for a few minutes or more. In fact, it's lagging as I type this thread. Can anyone help me with this problem? I'd rather not have to reformat or anything like that. Thanks in advance.

btw I'm using XP Pro.

Hi there,my name is Marius and I will assist you with your malware related problems. Before we move on, please read the following points carefully. First, read my instructions completely. If there is anything that you do not understand kindly ask before proceeding. Perform everything in the correct order. Sometimes one step requires the previous one. If you have any problems while following my instructions, Stop there and tell me the exact nature of your problem. Do not run any other scans without instruction or add/remove software unless I tell you to do so. This would change the output of our tools and could be confusing for me. Post all logfiles as a reply rather than as an attachment unless I specifically ask you. If you can not post all logfiles in one reply, feel free to use more posts. If I don't hear from you within 3 days from this initial or any subsequent post, then this thread will be closed. Stay with me. I will give you some advice about prevention after the cleanup process. Absence of symptoms does not always mean the computer is clean. My first language is not english. So please do not use slang or idioms. It could be hard for me to read. Hello im having problems making my computer run at normal speed. It has been running slow for awhile now but recently VERY SLOW. It takes forever to boot up and any program I open also takes an eternity. Once the program is running it works fine.
I have scanned the computer w/ norton, malwarebytes anti-malware and spybot.
I removed all the harmful files. Spybot seemed to make it run slower.
In the task manager the CPU usage is at 100%. There are about 80 processes when I boot up the system.(seems like a lot)
I uninstalled a bunch of programs I never use to free up some more space and I also tried restoring it to an earlier date.
I gave it the newest updates for windows.
I deleted all the programs I dont need from the start up.
Today I tried running Malwarebytes' anti-malware today and it TIMED OUT!! taskmanager said program was unresponsive.
I'm not sure where to go from here. Do I have to wipe my hard drive??? Please help!!! It is a Sony VAIO laptop.

A:My slow lagging computer

<<I removed all the harmful files.>>

That seems to always be a presumption...by those who get infected. Of course, it's not necessarily true but users seem to like to say/believe it.

I guess that I have to ask...was your system infected?

Any error messages during this troubled period?

I'm not sure what's been happening lately, but my laptop has been running kind of laggy and slow. My specs are as follows:

Windows XP SP2
Intel Pentium M
1.60Ghz
1.12GB RAM
30GB HD (19.1GB Free)
Software: Avast! AV, Comodo Firewall

I initially thought that my computer would only slow after I started Trillian, but I tested this (by not starting Trillian), and it seems it will still slow a few minutes after a restart. Restarting my laptop seems to solve this problem temporarily.

I have run the following programs to test out any problems, but they all come back clean:

Chkdsk
Defrag
Avast virus scan
Spybot S&D
Lavasoft Ad-Aware

Keeping it in safe mode (I'm posting in Safe Mode w/ Networking right now) seems to also keep the problem at bay.

Help?

Thanks!

Let's remove Panda completely first to see if it alleviates the problem. Make sure you install another antivirus program back though because as of now, you have no antivirus program running...

Download this file and save it on your desktop. Double click on it to run it and follow the directions...that should uninstall Panda completely.

Hello,

I am trying to help out my mother on her computer and considering you guys helped me out on mine, I figured I should come back.

Anyways, the problem with this computer is it has a lot of junk files, folders and things on it, yet I am not sure which files and folders are needed and which are not. Along with that problem, we have the bad lag. Sometimes it takes quite a few minutes to load Windows itself as well as programs.

My mother runs a eBay business and enjoys downloading games and music, so I know that is some cause of the slowing down of her computer.

Attatched is a Hijack This log.

Thank you in advance.

My computer has been running very slow lately and lagging when i I am watching videos on youtube. I looked at the programs I'm running in task manager and saw that something called svchost.exe has been taking up the most memory (40000 or so) when everyhting else is around 20000. Anyways, I ran a DDS scan and a GMER scan. But while running the GMER scan, I got a BSOD saying that a file "pxpdakod.sys" was the problem. Here is my DDS scan:

Hi guys,

I've recently bought a Dell Inspiron 15 (7548) which has i7-5500U, 16gb RAM, AMD Radeon R7 M265 4GB.

Problem I'm having is that the laptop is laggy and sometimes freezes.

I've noticed the disk usage sits at 100% most of the time.

I've just upgraded it to windows 10 in the hope that windows 8 was causing the issue but it has stayed the same.

Any help with this (as it makes the laptop slower than my 5 year old laptop which I replaced) would be greatly receieved!

Thanks!

Hi,

Below is the HJT Log, could someone please review this. Most of the downloaded programs (O16) on my log are not showing up on my add/remove list. The only program that I still use is Ofoto. If they are not showing up on my add/remove list, then how can I remove these from my computer?

Also, on my add/remove list there is a "BUM" ... I'm not sure what this is and have not seen it on there before. Could someone tell me what this is and if I should remove it?

My computer runs extreme slow and I end up rebooting two/three times an hour. Sometimes there is a lag every few minutes. Most of the time when I reboot my computer I lose my internet connection and need to unplug my cable modem and if that doesn't work, then I reboot again till I get my connection back.

If there is additional information needed, please let me know.

Thank you for your help.

First of all I'm blaming it all on ram since this computer only has 256mb. But anyways it used to be a lot faster (by a lot faster I mean it didn't take 10 minutes to boot up and load everything). I would understand it if I installed a lot of things, but the thing is I barely installed anything and even at that, I didn't install any high memory consuming programs, all I have is basically a kodak program, avast and some hp software. So out of the 40gb I still have like 33 free.

I have scanned with every program I thought off and find no adware/virus/trojans etc. But I still feel there's something not right.

Can anyone tell me if this Hijack log has anything strange. On other news the comp doesn't have the dvd rom installed either. It's not installed in the hardware manager and it obviously doesn't show on the "My computer" tab. It was working when the comp. came out the package, so that's another reason i'm suspecting something gone wrong. Tried deleteling the upper and lower filters and still no dvd rom recognition. I'm going to run a Registry cleaning tool... any recommendations on this?.

So anyway:

Whenever I connect external monitor or TV via HDMI the computer is slow/lagging (even moving windows or doing a right click is slow).I tried to isolate the problem and it seems to happen only when I use "Second screen only" or when the laptop lid is closes, if the lid is open and I use "Extend" or "Duplicate" everything's fine. Also, if I do reset while the monitor is still connected, it's working ok (but this is not a good solution for me as I want to keep the work evniornment).I tried playing with Display settings but nothing seems to help, maybe the community can please help me?

Hi The computer  that is slow is a desk top tower. In a home.  it is a E machine.
it has windows 7  professional  with service pack 1
DO KNOW :  I am very new to windows 7 and all it's features.
When I brought this computer home  last Nov. it was lightening fast at everything! so much better than  the windows XP  it replaced, I was thrilled.  yet Now starting in  April 2015  it is as slow  or slower  as my old Windows with XP ever was  ( and partially the reason for saving my  pennies to get this windows 7 computer)...and  now I'm upset. feeling  like I have been taken.

Computer displays the following :

Intel pentium dual 2.0Ghz  processor

Has Ccleaner installed
has Comodo antivirus and Comodo cleaning essentials installed.
All virus scans  find no infections,  and report that all is well and protected.  ( B/C of the way the computer is operating i'm doubting that and betting there is an infections of some sort)

I Have run Comodo cleaning essentials and  results find no abnormalities or infections.
Have run TFC and JRT  and the computer shows no signs of improvement.
have run rKill  and it  finds  no abnormalities  or infections.

A:Windows 7 computer suddenly slow to get on internet, slow to browse websites etc

Hi flywelder Maybe we aren't looking at an infection here. There's tons of reasons why a system can slow down, and not all of them are malware related. Let's try to take a look at this issue under another angle shall we?MiniToolBoxDownload MiniToolBox and move the executable file to your Desktop;Execute MiniToolBox and check the following options:List Installed Programs;List Last 10 Event Viewer Errors;List Devices - Only Problems;List Users, Partitions and Memory size;Once this is done, click on Go and wait for the scan to complete;Once the scan is complete, a log will open. My computer's symptoms include a little slow on startup, after use of more than 30 minutes the computer becomes extremely slow at doing anything (looking at My Computer in Windows Explorer takes 5 minutes), it freezes (especially Firefox and Windows Explorer) and, in one incident, the computer failed to wake up from sleep mode (lights reactivated but screen was "off" [not black, "off"], no response, repeated attempts to wake it up failed). I have since uninstalled the software to see if it would make a difference, and it has gotten better, but I'd like to make sure that there is no residual malware left over - or if I have spoken too soon.Attached is the Attach.txt and Ark.txt that is required by the preparational page. Hello, I'm having a rather frustrating problem with my laptop. It was working wonderfully until suddenly, it started micro-stuttering and lagging. Long story short, I reset Windows, updated my Bios, updated my Display adapter driver (and other drivers), did hard Disk check, memory test, tested compoments...all to no avail. There was a slight improvement when I updated my display adapter driver but the result is far from where it was originally. The only symptom my notebook was showing before this happened was a problem where the battery would not be charging though plugged in. This only happened ever so often. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

I recently had Windows 7 Ultimate x64 bit installed on my laptop and it was operating perfectly for about three weeks... That is, until a few days ago when I decided to upload some photos from my camera. It was quite a few, over 200, but I have plenty of disc space. Suddenly it has slowed down, and at times unresponsive. It will freeze up for a few minutes, then suddenly continue with whatever I was trying to do. It doesn't make sense to me that uploading photos would do this, but that's the only significant change that I made before this started.
In case it's a coincidence and it is a virus, I've run rkill, Malewarebytes, Advanced System Care, and a full Avira scan. Nothing has come up. Any other suggestions?
Thanks for your help!

Hi everyone!

I was just playing counter strike when suddenly out of nowhere my fps dropped down to like 20. I thought "whatever, it might be a random lagspike, happens sometimes". It has always been at 100 and only sometimes drops to 90-95 but now since this "whatever lagspike" it just hasn't gone up from 20 fps and sometimes drops back down to 5 or 10 which makes my game totally unplayable. I then decided to check other games to see if its only cs but no, other games all of a sudden lag like hell also. I have no idea what to do, one moment i was playing constant 100 fps and now i can't get over 20 fps?

I checked graphic driver updates, there were no updates. I tried restarting my computer multiple times, no change. Then I tried updating java since one of the games i tried playing needed it, still nothing.

I monitored my cpu and motherboard temperatures, they were all fine?
Windows 7 is performing a little slower but not significantly. My cpu used to be at like 20% load to 50% load when i was playing games and chrome was open in the background but now it's at like 80-100% but they're the same apps running but now suddenly they take more cpu than before that lagspike occured.

Could someone please help me and explain howcome one second I'm playing sooo smoothly with 100 fps and now my computer can't even hit over 20?

Thanks!

A:Suddenly lagging in every game I try to play?

looks like i figured it out, it's weird but it looks like i started lagging because the powerplan of my laptop was on energy saver because i had taken it with me and the battery of it wasn't that good. Now i plugged it back in and change powerplan to high performance and it works perfectly again.

I probably type about average speed. A couple of months ago I notice that I have to wait a second or two (sometimes) for characters to appear on the screen. I use Notepad++ to build websites. I'm not sure that's the only program where I have this problem, but it's the one I do most of my typing in. It's only been a short while since I did a complete hd format. I have tons of RAM. And besides-- I never had this problem before. Any suggestions?

A:PC suddenly lagging behind keyboard (Win7)

This is not unusual.
It's just a sign of a computer that needs to be tweaked.
It's rare that it's just one thing causing the problem.
Unwanted programs running in the background, overfilled hard drive, malware and/or virus', a need for defragging, etc.

This PC has been working for about 3 years or so and suddenly today it started lagging really badly. I have done a fresh install of Windows 10 (wiping the previous partitions) and it's lagging even before I install any drivers. The extraction speed on zip file was around 100-200 kB/s and periodically went to 0.

Is this a hard drive failing?

Is it making funny noises?? If it's failing you'll likely hear some really nasty sounds coming from it.

I'm really not sure where this thread belongs, as I've done a number of thing to fix the problem, but nothing has worked. As the title states, my computer has suddenly become slower than cold molasses. I was on my computer one night, and it was working perfectly fine. A friend of mine texted me and told me that there was a new update for Star Wars: The Old Republic, and since I know that the updates take a long time to download, I figured I'd wait until I went to bed and I'd just leave my computer on so it could download it. (I set the screen display to shut off after a few minutes, but set the "Sleep when plugged in" to "Never" so that it wouldn't go to sleep and stop the download.) I woke up the next morning and woke up my computer screen, and all of the sudden it was super slow. It takes anywhere from 15 seconds to 2 minutes (and that's just an estimate) for Windows Explorer to open when I want to look at my files; it can take many seconds for the Start menu to pop up when I click on the Windows emblem in the bottom left corner; when I click on something in a program, my computer will freeze up (the mouse will move, but the button I click will remain dark, as if I just clicked it) for a few seconds before whatever I wanted to open up will load; and even my web browsers (yes, all of them: Microsoft Edge, Mozilla Firefox, and Chrome) will say "Not Responding" a thousand times more often than normal. Okay...so around Easter my computer (Dell Inspiron 2650, Windows XP Pro)was hijacked by CoolWebSearch, which took me a while to get rid of because Ad-Aware couldn't delete it, and CWShredder SAID that it deleted it, but it never really went away. I also use Spybot S&D to detect spyware, etc., because for some reason my computer has all of a sudden been bombarded with it. I finally got rid of CWS. Then all of a sudden my Windows Media Player wouldn't open, so I redowloaded it and it worked. But now, after that, my computer is really slow and I can't figure out why. If I click on a button, many times it takes 5-10 seconds to even respond. Microsoft Word says it's "not responding" many times, and other programs shut down randomly. The computer freezes a lot (won't display text, there are sort of black boxes on parts of the screen, the mouse moves in jerks). My hard drive isn't even half-full, I run Ad-Aware, etc. a lot (it picks up something new every time), and I ran defrag a week or two ago. I tried to run System Restore, but it won't do it. I know that's all a huge mess, but I don't know what else to do.

I'm using it for about 4 month and haven't had any problem with it till now.
Yesterday I turned it on and it took much longer then usual to start up, and when I'm using usual prog. like Firefox it stucks for a long time or shows me the right click menu only if i run the mouse over it.
I've tried to run ad aware an another spyware prog., it found some minor stuff and fixed them, and i ran McAfee antivirus after it was updated and found nothing.
I ran some app. on sandra 2002 and it found some havy files that i dont know if they may casue the problem. I cant find what was that app, but ill upload the file names, after ill find it.

Two days ago my computer was running completely smooth and normal, but over night when i turned off the computer something must of happened because the next day, yesterday, it was running incredibly slow, start up was normal but then sometimes my computer would crash and get BSOD (Blue screen of death) later i found out it was my usb hardware crashing it so i updated it from device manager and no more BSOD but that didnt change that it was still slow, putting the computer to sleep to more than 15 minutes and waking it back up took 8 minutes. I tried to fix this by first seeing if it was a virus causing it, i scanned my whole computer and i found nothing, then i scanned for malware and adware. i found only one adware and deleted it, then i did a disk clean up, all these didn't change much, so i defragged my computer, it helped a little bit a little faster but occasionally everything would just freeze from opening something up or right clicking. Sometimes it gets so bad i need to go to safe mode, later, i got an error it said:

0xc0000185 = STATUS_IO_DEVICE_ERROR = an I/O error occurred.

If the USB device(s) are unplugged, the HDD is the likely culprit.

- Run chkdsk /r

- Run HDD Diagnostics - http://www.techsupportforum.com/2828431-post7.html

Start with SeaTools for DOS.

A:!i Need Help With My Suddenly Slow Computer!

Hi tbraddy,Sorry for the delay, this forum is overwhelmed right now.I don't see any signs of malware in this log. However, I need to see a fresh log to be sure.I see that you are running msconfig in /auto mode which means that you may have selectively removed some items in the past from the startup procedure. This can be bad if they are malware, so we would like you to reenable those startup entries by doing the following:Please click on start, then run, and type msconfig and then press enter. When the window opens click on the startup tab and make sure there are checkmarks in every entry. Then press ok until you are out of the program. If it asks to reboot, do not reboot. Now please create a new Hijackthis Log and post it as a reply.Dave

It is running slower than normal, especially the browsers. My computer is slow to keep up with my typing, browsing, scrolling, and opening of applications. I haven't downloaded or installed anything "new" recently, so I'm not exactly sure how I could have gotten infected. I hardly use my desktop anymore, but need to start using it for school. I have most of my installed RAM available so I don't think that's the issue.

Any help is appreciated.

I'm using Windows 7 64-bit

Hey guys. So I got a new gaming laptop for Christmas and up until recently it had been great, able to run anything I want to on the default graphics settings, etc. However within the last week a multitude of problems popped up. My computer was far less responsive while browsing the web, discord in particular made it lag like crazy, and I went from being able to run Skyrim with crystal clear graphics to not being able to run Saints Row 3 on the lowest settings at more then 20 FPS and not even being able to open up Skyrim (I could get to the menus, but it would freeze every time I tried to play the game). Not all games were broken (I can still run Stardew Valley, although to be fair you can run that on almost any computer) and I fixed the discord problem by reinstalling it, but I still can't run most of my games which is a ****** feeling. I tried:
Cleaning out my hard drive (which did make it less laggy when I was using the internet)
Checking for viruses (in both the default windows program and malware bytes -- no viruses were found both times.
I also got a strange error message when trying to play Dirt Rally -- while I was able to run it fine previously, when trying to open it now I got the message: "Minimum of Pentium D or Athlon 64 x2 required." While this could be related to the game maybe one of those components in the computer broke? I have no idea what either of those things are (I'm a gamer but not a computer gal) but could they stop working?

My laptop gave me a blue screen when I opened it last night saying that it had shut down and was now restarting for a reason that I can't remember. I don't know if it's related, but about ever since then my computer has been running much, much slower than usual, and I have no idea what's wrong with it/what to do.

Here's a log from HiJackThis:

Hi! I have a HP Pavillion desktop(p7-1235)with Windows 7. It's been running with no problems for 5ish years now but suddenly started to crawl. Not just web browsers but opening anything on the computer. It goes through moments of where it seems to be fine but will suddenly be crawling again. I've also noticed in the mornings the computer will be off and when I go to turn it on it tells me it wasn't turned off correctly. (I recently moved into an old house and assumed it could be the outlet) I have ran malewarebytes, Microsoft security, and spybot with no results. I regularly disk cleanup and clean cache off it and try to keep it healthy. I was worried about the hard drive going so I downloaded HDtune and ran the quick scan but it all came back normal. I tried checkdisk in safe mode but it seemed to get stuck at 45%
Thanks in advance!
-Sierra
Edited: I was able to get chkdsk / r to run fully. It has been a lot faster since. Almost seemingly normal again. It stayed on all night without turning off on its own. However, when I restarted the computer again my desktop background went back to looking washed out (how it looked while it as running slow) and not the right colors despite me not messing with any of that stuff.  So if its not too much trouble I'd still like to see if there is another issue infecting this computer.

A:Suddenly slow computer.

Hi ssee05 My name is Aura and I'll be assisting you with your issue. The symptoms you described are often associated with a hard drive failure, so I would like to test it with GSmartControl, which is more reliable when it comes to diagnostic than HDTune. Follow the instructions below please.GSmartControlFollow the instructions below to test your hard drive health with GSmartControl:Download GSmartControl and save it on your Desktop;Extract the content of the GSmartControl .zip archive and execute gsmartcontrol.exe;Identify your drive in the list, and double-click on it to bring up it's window (usually you'll find your drive by it's size or it's brand name);Go in the Perform Tests tab, then select Extended Self-test in the Test type drop-down list and click on Execute (this test can take a few hours to complete);Once the test is over, the results will be displayed at the bottom of the window. Please copy and paste these results in your next reply;Also, go in the Attributes tab and if you have any entries highlighted in red or pink, copy and paste their name in your next reply (or take a screenshot of the GSmartControl window and attach it in your next reply);

I have a Dell Inspiron 1720 with Vista SP1. I got a virus about 2 weeks ago and re installed Vista. Everything worked fine for a week, then the computer became slow at some point. I use the computer for music production so I noticed everything slowed down because my projects were suddenly overloading the system.

Anyway, I have tried to work what is wrong. I have scanned with Kaperksy, Ad Aware, Spybot and not found anything. I have checked device manager and everything is working fine. There is plenty of space on the hard disk. I have checked programs running at startup and disabled any unnecessary. I have checked disks for errors.

So what else could it be? And everything worked fine for a week after re installing the operating system, then everything seemed to suddenly slow down. I had been installing a lot of software, but only programs I had on before I re installed.

Any help appreciated
