Floppy malfunction & RAM

Q: Floppy malfunction & RAM

When I start my computer, I have to restart it to get my A drive to work. If I don't do that, the drive doesn't show up in Control Panel and Hardware lists it as "Device Cannot Start". I've uninstalled & installed it, and nothing works. I have XP Pro. I usually, as the computer is booting up, press "delete" to get into BIOS then immediately push F10 to restart, so it will come on.
HELP, please!

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Win 2000 professional computer P4

I was infected by the kluz virus (‘thank you’) a couple of weeks ago. It disabled my Norton’s and wrecked havoc with my p3 computer. I downloaded a program that fixed it but a week later my hard drive died (we assume by coincidence and from overheating). We took that bad hard drive and installed it as a slave (on my friends computer) to retrieve data to a 3 ˝ floppy but instantly detected problems within that 3 ˝ drive. I wound up emailing the data. I Installed the bad hard drive on my p4 at home as a slave and it did the same thing. I installed a new 3 ˝ floppy drive and it is still doing the same thing. Here’s what it does.

I put a floppy in, click on my computer, double click on the 3 1/2, it highlights as though it is proceeding, I can see the light on the floppy working, I can hear the clickity, clickity of the floppy drive (but painfully slow) and about a long minute later, a prompt appears and asks if I want to format? I click NO because I’m trying to open or just see by reading a test disc I know for sure there is data on it. From that point on, what ever instructions I give it is about a minute or slightly less to respond. If I attempt to save anything like a document (as a test), it won't allow it as a prompt tells me there is failure in the hardware or (not sure if it also said) ‘program’ or something associated with the process? Essentially, the 3 ˝ is useless unless I can transfer data to it, or read from it.

A:3 1/2 floppy slow down and malfunction

The virus, it seems, is draining free memory. thats why ur system is slowing to a crawl whenever u try to run a process. And it must have infected the boot records. If it took a long time before u cleaned it up, then its probably still there. I suggest u not take ur hard drive to any system other than urs. And reformatting is the only option to get rid of it. Sorry.

I recently purchased an HP ProBook 450 G3. I am using two passport compact 1 TB drives with my laptop's two USB 3.0 ports. In normal use there is no problem. However, when I copy a lot of data from one to the other (or from one to the laptop's internal drive) the drives keep disconnecting. I know this because first I will get a copying error saying either the source or the destination is missing. Then I will hear the "chime" that Windows makes when a USB device connects or disconnects. Then the autoplay window for the Passport drive will appear. It seems that it spontaneously disconnects and then reconnects. I can continue using it for a time afterward, but it always spontaneously disconnects at some point, always when I am doing large data transfers.

I wondered if I have a poor physical connection---the USB plugs seem a bit loose. I checked if there is any vibration or movement that could break the connection, but so far there is no evidence that anything is moving. The disconnection always happens when a lot of data is being transferred, while the drives are sitting completely still.

Any ideas how to debug this?

A:Hard drive malfunction? USB port malfunction? Or just normal?

This is a hard situation to diagnose from a distance IMO. "Loose" is somewhat subjective, and barring serious abuse the only kinds of usb connectors & ports I've ever seen fail mechanically are mini and micro USB2 types.

I'd be inclined to suspect the drives first, especially if they are from the same family and were produced around the same time (the "bad batch" phenomenon). Have you tried to reproduce the problem on other machines, or with different drives on your machine?

Hey guys,I used one of my friends pen drive on my pc and while browsing the pen drive,My avira picked up a trojan alert and i moved all the threats to quarantine and restarted my pc.After the reboot;Taskmanager,Mscofig, regedit, firefox, chrome are all not working/opening.Ctrl+alt+delete had been disabled and my floppy disk drive kept flickering continously.Internet explorer was the only browser that was working,But whenever i searched "regedit crashing" in google,IE too crashed!

When i restart the System in normal mode these are the problems that i have.

When ever i try to open firefox/chrome by double clicking the cursor loads for a second and then nothing happens. Some times it reports a error message about a 16-bit memory usage..I didn't read this error properly because it appeared only once.

My floppy disk drive light keeps flickering without a seconds pause and makes weird noises .

Ok I have a self-built computer...it's a year old just a few days ago.

Win XP SP2 (I think)
Intel Quad-Core 2.4ghz [OCed to 3.2ghz)
RAM 4gb [2.5gb detected]
HDD- Western Digital 160GB and not sure which company could be Maxtor 500GB SATA
8800GT 512mb Video Card

I have an IDE drive on there too with an Apple OSX installed on it.

but

I've been hunting viruses and trojans [due to a backdoor trojan that] for the last few days and elimintated most of them including the backdoor. I was running a 'thourough' scan today while I was at school as well as downloading some things. MY anti-virus program is avast!

Thinking my comps quad-core 3.2ghz could handle the load I turned on Company of Heroes while all this was running....the comp froze...I restarted manually.

The first screen I got is the usual one except under SATA Channel listings it said Floppy disk(s) fail (40)....I don't have a floppy drive.

Then when I press F1 to continue it doesn't load up my main hardrive where Windows is installed. Like it doesn't detect it....it only detects the IDE drive with Apple on it and can start it up.

Don't ask me how I have an Apple OS on my comp the answer might violate the forums rules...but that OS isn't the problem.

Somehow the anti-virus scan mixed with downloading and a video game crash messed things up. Even F8 doesn't work.

A:[SOLVED] Floppy Disk Fail(40)...but I have no floppy drive..no startup

The BIOS was reset to default values. Enter the BIOS at startup and change the boot order priority to the sata hdd first. Locate the screen with the setting for the floppy drive and set that drive to disabled or none. If there's a setting called halt on disk errors change it to "no errors but keyboard" or something like that. Once you're back within windows run chkdsk c: /R to correct errors in the file system caused by the hard restart (answer y when prompted to schedule the scan at next startup and restart the computer).

What's the brand, model and wattage of your power supply ? The freezing wasn't necessarily caused by the antivirus, could have been caused by an underpowered power supply. With an overclocked quad core and a 8800GT you need a quality 700W+ supply. Locate the hardware monitor screen in the BIOS and report your temps, fan speeds and voltages.

Hi All,

Here is the low down. I cant boot into any OS.

I formatted my PC and figured that after installing XP i'd dual boot Ubuntu (9.04).
So all went well, XP and Ubuntu installed as anticipated i could access both OS' for a couple of hours.

When i was in Ubuntu, i was trying to change my primary monitor (22") to have the toolbar instead of my 19".
I went on Ubuntu forums to see what had to be done, and i needed to reboot for the changes to take effect.

After i rebooted, it didn’t list any of my 2 hard drives (150gb raptor, 1tb Samsung) or my Asus DVD/CD drive.

My motherboard (Nvidia 680I) stated 7F which only says in the manual as "Check POST error and display them and ask user intervention".
Well, the lovely post error comes up as:

floppy disk(s) fail (40) Click to expand...

floppy disk(s) fail (40)
Real helpful right? And considering i have NO floppy drive...(its a custom built PC)
And i have two options, F1 to continue and DEL for BIOS.

I checked BIOS first, reset to default, removed floppy drive from the boot menu, rebooted, same issue.

Hit F1 to continue now, and the only bootable option is the NVIDIA Boot Agent and comes up with this:

NVIDIA BOOT AGENT 231.0528
PXE-E61: MEDIA TEST FAILURE, CHECK CABLE
PXE-M0F: EXITING NVIDIA BOOT AGENTClick to expand...

This goes on a continuous loop, failing every time. I've checked all cables and it all seems fine.

Hi, I'm trying to install Windows XP Pro SP2 on my Compaq CQ62-423NR laptop.

I use this laptop for work. It came with Windows 7 Home Premium. During the past few days, a computer on our company's network was infected with a virus. It spread to our company's network drive (NAS) and infected many of the files. When I used my computer to access the network drive, the virus infected my computer, and for some reason, AVG wasn't able to detect the virus until it was too late. I.T. has restored the network drive from a backup, and all ordered everyone to restore from a clean backup or reinstall Windows. I have made backups before, but they were stored on the computer's hard drive and I.T. says the backups may be infected, so I can not use them.

It's been a long time since the warranty expired. HP doesn't want to let me order recovery media. Then I made a dumb move and deleted the Windows 7 partition, hoping to be able to install Windows XP. But there was a problem with that.

If I simply boot from the installation CD, a BSoD (STOP) appears. After some research, I found out this is because my laptop's hard drive has AHCI and there is no option in the BIOS (InsydeH20 Rev 3.5) to disable it.

I read somewhere that I can either use a floppy drive to load the AHCI drivers before installation, or slipstream the ISO/install CD and add the AHCI drivers to the list of drivers that come built-in.

I recently built a system with an Intel 955 Motherboard. All is well, except for one curious thing - the floppy drive activity light is always on, from the moment of startup, even before WinXP loads, and the system can't read a floppy. It just keeps requesting that I insert a floppy into my a: drive. It does not sound like the floppy spindle is running, and there are no solenoid-like clicks when I insert the floppy as though the system is trying to read it, just the mechanical "snap" of the eject spring.

Any thoughts? Did I miss something in BIOS? I tried 2 different, brand-new floppy drives and they both act the same way. I've never encountered this before.

EDIT: Ok... So I need to create a SATA floppy, which I didn't know I need to create (yes, I am using a Sata 1 drive). So, how do you create this floppy drive (gladly I have a second machine with a floppy)? I just need the general idea of it (how to create the floppy itself so it "works"), I'll take care of finding the correct drivers themselves...

(Admins, is it possible that you rename my thread to something like "creating SATA drivers floppy"?)
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Good morning all!

My parts are [supposed] to come today (well, the rest of them, that is). So I should be building my new system in a few days or so. But for the windows installation, do I need a floppy drive, too? So far I've bought only a DVD/CD ROM so I can install from any kind of CD/DVD (plus its very cheap if you aren't saving data on discs), so I should be able to get by. But I want to make sure that somewhere in the middle of the process of installing something it says "please make a floppy with [insert what here] and boot up from it to [insert action here]".

Thanks for your help in advance.

A:creating SATA drivers floppy (Do I need a floppy?)

In the beginning of the installation it says you should press F6 to load additional drivers. You don't know what these additional drivers are or you are already away making a sandwich in the kitchen, so the message disappears and the setup continues.

Later on, if you have a SATA hard drive, the WIndows installerwill say that it can't find any hard drives. And then, when you ask someone about this pecualiar message, you are told that you should have made a special floppy disk containing SATA drivers and pressed that F6 key

Hello everyone, first time poster, so sorry if I mess up ^^

Anyways, I just got a new laptop, specifically a Lenovo 80XS0086IX Ideapad 320-15ABR. Initially it all seemed fine, but as I used it I noticed several problems: 1) it cannot remain in sleep mode for long. After a while, it just switches off abruptly. I have tried several combinations of lid closed/open, power cord in/out, but eventually the result is always the same. 2) When powering it on after these shutdowns, the trackpad does not recognize multiple-fingers gestures, requiring a restart. 3) The disk usage frequently goes up to 100% despite no ongoing activity. 4) Sometimes, pressing the power button to power it on results in the disk starting, then abruptly stopping, then restarting again several times, before the laptop finally starts. 5) The system sometimes freezes for several seconds, even the cursor stops, only to resume any input movement later.

I have tried everything in my knowledge: I updated the BIOS, the HDD firmware, installed all Windows updates, fresh-installed Windows, but nothing seems to work (although the HDD thing apparently solved the "always 100%" problem). I ran both Windows in-built check-disk and third party programs to check for errors on the HDD, but none showed up. I'd be really glad if it was something I can fix at home, since I really need this machine to study, so sending it to be repaired/replaced back at Amazon is my very last option due to time. DEP processing is flaky. Setting /noexecute=OptOut and adding HP digital monitor to the exceptions list does not cause DEP enable for all processes.

No 'restart needed' popup is displayed....
?? CHROME, AVAST, FIREFOX all show DEP (permanent). All others DISABLED.....
?? setting /noexecute=AlwaysOn works, all processes DEP'd, BUT disallows HP digital monitor (can print, cannot scan or retrieve printer info).
I do have Administrator privileges but thought I noticed a popup (IIRC) re two items (processes?) not functioning, CIMV2? perhaps and one other. WBEMTEST checked for DEP 3 (OptOut), verified it was set (I forget the Superclass now, under root/cimv2).
Is this a Startup issue of some kind? Something not loading? GPEDIT under XP not helpful unless DISabling access to various options.
Thanks.... :-/

I have a Toshiba Satellite laptop with XP Home Edition on it. All of my drives and devices connect externally and I access them through 3 different USB ports. A week ago I began having problems with my USB ports.

When I turn on my laptop, the devices (a mouse, keyboard and printer) initially are recognized and run well. Then I hear the noise from the comp as if I unplugged a device and my mouse, keyboard and printer are all no longer recognized by the comp. Sometimes I hear the noise as if I plugged them back in, sometimes I don't hear that noise but get an error message saying that my devices are not working properly and need to be replaced. All of my devices are in reality functioning properly. There does not seem to be consistency in when the USB ports stop functioning. During this time I am not touching the connections and at times am not even actively using the comp.

Do I have a trojan virus? or are my USB ports beginning to simply malfunction?
Any suggestions would be really appreciated. I can't do much with a laptop that cannot save a file to a disk or print a file. I have ad ware and spy ware removal tools (ad aware, spybot search and destroy, spyguard) as well as an updated firewall and antivirus (zone alarm suite) running on the comp. No major risks or problems have been found by these programs.

Try this: Go to start, control panel, system, click the hardware tab, and click device manager, click the plus next to Universal Serial Bus controllers, and right click and click uninstall on any USB root hubs. Then restart your computer and windows should detect your usb and reinstall the drivers.

I have a Atapi 6x/32x dvd-rom. Recently, when attempting to insert and install any type of software...dvd or cd it causes my computer to crash and I need to reboot. Sometimes, at that point a warning appears during the reboot process indicating...fatal exception OE: page fault and lists too many numbers to repeat. Could this be hardware or software problems? I have a 2 year old micron 450MHz Intel II that required a hard drive replacement last year (13.0 GB Ultra ATA66 Hard Drive) after emmiting the "sound of Death" Any one have any clues? Thank you
Lisa.

A:dvd-rom malfunction?

For starters, go to start/settings/control panel/system/device manager/ cdrom tab, is it listed correctly , does it have any error indicators. If not, try selecting it, hit remove, reboot and reinstall the drive and software that came with it.

Make sure all Windows updates are marked "Successful". If your mail is Yahoo, AT&T or any SBC company they're having trouble with the new mail so the problem might not be on your end.

Hello all,

Well, to get right into it, my PSU conked out. I shut down my computer (Start > Turn Off Computer . . .), it didn't automatically turn off like it normally does. So, I tried the power switch, nothing happened. Finally, I flipped the switch on the PSU. Obviously, it was off now.
The next day, I went to turn it on, and it didn't. I tested the power switch, it was fine, so the next thing to check was the PSU. Took it to a computer service store, they tested it, it was dead. I sent it back to the company, they sent me a brand new one. And that brings us to today.

I installed the PSU in my computer, hooked it up to everything (mb, harddrive, video card, CD-Rom, fans). I pushed the power button, the PSU lit up (it has a lighted fan on it) and the fan went on, this lasted about a second, then it shut off. Well, then I went through step-by-step:
- Connected only the motherboard to the PSU - turned on, stayed on, beeped.
- Connected the motherboard and the larger fan - turned on, stayed on, beeped.
- Connected the motherboard, larger fan, and the harddrive - turned on, stayed on, beeped.
- Connected the motherboard, larger fan, hard drive, and video card - turned on, stayed on, did not beep. (apparently it was beeping because there was no video output.
- Connected the motherboard, larger fan, hard drive, video card, and plugged everything into the back of the computer - turned on, stayed on.
- Connected everything listed above, plus the smaller fan, turned an... Read more

A:PSU Malfunction

Although there are things like power surges and lightning strikes that could kill a PSU, there is really no reason to try to come up with a scenario for what happened. Often they just die and it can be without warning. I think you are saying that now everything works. If the new PSU suddenly quits then you may have a problem that needs to be figured out.

The fan set up looks pretty standard.

Having never really experienced anything untoward with W10, therefore have always come down on the FOR side.
I have an MSI G70 very high spec gaming laptop, obviously RTM and this has never given a moments trouble before.
Today I noticed on the taskbar three Document folders, clicking on one took me to Documents, right clicking gives the option to unpin, in so doing it added another couple of document folders to the taskbar and removed almost all my other saved apps.
Repeating brought up other apps which would never normally attach to the taskbar.
My System Restore which I had made on 2nd FEB had been wiped off so could not use that.
Decided not to use backup in case the problem was inbuilt.
Finally did a recovery in order to save files and documents, which left an app list on the Desktop, that list consisting of 61 apps.
Conclusion RS1 is more reliable than TH2. though it could be down to surplus or conflicting junk apps loaded by MSI.
Desktops running W10 Pro and Insider both running normally.

Ok, this is kinda complicated. It started this morning. I was on the web when Trend Micro popped up a message that wanted me to allow or delete a change to my system. The file name was called geede.dll..so I googled it and came across a couple posts. Well they started of by saying running Vundofix.exe...which I did and it came back clean. Then the user was told to download Combofix.exe to the desktop and disconnect the internet and disable any antivirus software (Trend in my case)...so far so good..then the computer restarted..this is where I get into serious problems.

First, the computer won't reboot getting stuck on the "Windows is Starting UP" screen for 10 minutes. So I manually restarted the computer. Once my desktop finally loaded, the task bar looked weird, and no longer showed any thing besides the start menu, the quick launch icons, and the clock, the time format is still changed to 24h time even though combofix said it would change that back... even though programs can still be opened they do not display on the taskbar.

I restarted and the same thing happened. So, I tried to perform a system restore by going to c:\\Windows\erdnt\Hiv-backup\erdnt.exe...it restarted the computer but nothing changed...i'm still stuck with the same problem...so at this point I am kinda worried and decide that I should probably back up everything just in case...but I can't copy/cut (ctrl v) files or drag and copy files to the desktop or anywhere on the computer ... Unplug ALL USB devices.
Open Device Manager.
View, Show Hidden Devices.
Uninstall all devices under USB Controllers.
Uninstall all devices under Storage Volumes. Say no to any reboot prompts until you are finished. Also, if a Storage Volume doesn't uninstall, ignore it and move to the next one.
If you have a yellow ? with unknown devices, uninstall all of the entries there as well.

When this is done, reboot TWICE.

Reconnect the USB devices and see if they're recognized properly.

I'm having the same problem I was making a copy of Microsoft word processor so I could transfer it over to another computer during copying windows lost my jump stick for a second then reconnected this caused the files to become corrupt I deleted the files and tried again it copied with no problems but when I plugged in the other computer I got the USB malfunction message I tried it in my computer and my friends laptop and got the same message. I tried the above steps with no luck.

A:USB malfunction message

If your USB device is recognized and gets a drive letter in My Computer/Windows Explorer but has a problem or you can't view the files; Then go to Start/Run and type CMD and hit enter. In the Command Prompt type the drive letter of the USB Flash Drive (i.e: E: or whatever) the command prompt now displays the drive letter for the flash. Now type chkdsk /f/r and hit enter. Now type a Y and hit enter to unmount the drive. the check disk utility will try and fix any errors on the Flash drive.

Well here's the basics of my problem. I built my grandfather a computer about a year ago. It worked fine until it started not outputting any sound. I consider myself to be quite proficient in computer repair, but this one's really got my stumped.

Well, basics first. Hardware setup is:
Asus A8V Deluxe Mobo
3400+ Processor
512 RAM
Audigy 2 ZS
Radeon 9600 Pro
Windows XP 2002 Edtn. with Service Pack 2

Here's a basic outline of what I tried.

First, I checked to make sure that nothing was muted. I checked in control panel and in Windows Media Player and Creative's player, whatever that's called. I've checked every option that I can find and nothing is muted, and my devices are correctly selected. I checked by plugging the speakers into the onboard audio and the Audigy 2 ZS. Neither one produced any sound. I also know that the speakers do indeed work.

I also checked in device manager to see if the computer is/was having driver conflicts. It is not indicated there that there are any problems.

I've already tried the sound troubleshooter through Windows Help and it just told me to go ask someone else because it was stumped as well.

Then, since I know the Asus A8V has a bootup speech thing, I plugged the speakers into the onboard audio port and upon startup the motherboard output audio through the speakers.

After that, since I knew that the computer could indeed produce sound, I uninstalled the Creative drivers and then reinstalled them. When I ... Read more

I fixed it by removing the Audigy. I don't know why or how or what, but it works now. So GG and we'll leave it as it is. Hopefully this'll help someone else.
