I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Do you have a password on your account? They would need that to see your files if you have them encrypted.

You could also put them in a zip file and password-protect the zip.

There are several, small, encryption programs here:

Hi

I have just noticed a new addition of "New folder" when I right click in Explore. It is the very top item. If I click on it, a new folder appears with a name already filled in - the names are random - like loon, dog, etc.

The "New" <Folder> is still there and works properly.

I ran Adaware, Spybot, Norton Anti-virus, Windows Anitispyware. I ran Adaware first and it found eight entries which I deleted. After that, the other programs found nothing.

Any idea how I can remove this entry from the menu?

Thanks!!

All of my libraries are empty, and I have tried about 3 different ways to include a folder and every time I either get the error "The folder can't be included in library", or the include button is grayed out. Right-click on folder and then click include in______ Library, right-click library, and click add folder then choosing folder, and home>properties>add folder all give the error, can't be added, Then home>easy access the add button is grayed out, I have searched google several times and I always get the instructions to do it one of the above ways, which isn't working for me. Does anyone have any ideas. I did manage to get the download folder added to the download library, but that was the only one, the rest I go to properties>add folder, clicking the add button does nothing, visually you can see the button depress, but that's it nothing happens, then it's like doing that causes the pc to lag for about 15 seconds.

I created a folder on my desktop and add images of books I have sold almost daily. With Windows XP, the images would stay in order as I added them, but with Windows 7 they are always in order of the image name.
I have tried using the different sort by date options, but they are always sorted by the image name (which is a 5 digit number). How can I sort them by the date I add them to the folder?
Thanks,
Fritz

A:How to sort images by date added to a folder

Hello Fritz, and welcome to Seven Forums.

I would think that adding the column "Date last saved", then having the folder set to be sorted by it would do the trick.

Hope this helps,

So, I updated to Firefox 3 and all is good. I then spent the better part of a day trying to
find the magical anti phishing & other malware security updates to the new browser.
Finally I broke down and limped over to Mozilla to post my query. "How can I locate the
new security features to make sure my download went correctly?" The answer I got was that
the new features are hidden and only pop up when you have visited a site or downloaded a file with malware in it. I love Firefox, I love Mozilla, but come on, I should traipse around the
web until I get some verification of the security features working by way of a notification message or until my computer is so loaded with garbage it gives me a dose?

A:Firefox 3 added security?

I've read everywhere that overall the extra security should help make for safer browsing, but none of the upgrades will prove a major deterrent for malware pushers.

Hello,
I am looking to setup a system (through windows or 3rd party software) that automatically creates a shortcut, in a specified folder, every time a new file/folder is added to a specific folder or sets of folders.

For example consider the download folder for a Torrent application. All torrents downloaded go into this folder. Since the files cannot be moved around without having to reload them in order to get them to seed, organization of this folder becomes tough. However if all files downloaded (technically it would be all files placed) into this folder were automatically sent to a different folder as a shortcut, this would make the organization far easier.

Any suggestions? THANKS!

A:Looking to create shortcut automatically for all files added to folder

Combo solution.
http://www.brutaldev.com/page/Directory-Monitor.aspx
NirCmd - Windows command line tool

Setup Directory Monitor to monitor particular folder and execute THE SCRIPT(see code below). Directory Monitor has to run as administrator in order to start the script as adminustrator.

Setup NirCmd in a specific folder. In that folder place the bat script:
Code:
%~dp0nircmd.exe shortcut "%~1" "C:\targetFOLDER\" "%~n1"
Here is how this should work:
Direcory Monitor monitors Inpunt folder, sees the new file, passes it's name to the script, script starts NirCmd, which creates a file shortcut in targetFolder.

That is the only solution I can think of at the moment.

If you are running a full internet security suite do you "need" any additional programs or are you in good shape to thwart attacks on your PC? Also, I have heard that virus programs and firewalls conflict w/each other when both are running simulatenously, is it true?

A:Programs Conflicting and added security!

Yes, firewalls and AV programs will conflict if run simultaneously. Actively run only one.

"Suites" are not usually the best way to secure broad malware protection. First, the programming of a "suite" is complex and can lead to problems, esp. if you want to remove it. Second, parts of the "suite may not be the best available. I have seen references here at TSG recommending individual programs, and I have followed that advice.

Hi guys,

Please help me out form this problem.

I have configured windows auditing on some of the critical folders on our server (Windows 2003 Server), I have applied the group policy for i.e. enabled object access (both failure and success). Then I configured auditing on these folders and selected the auditing option for the following:

1. Delete

2. Delete subfolders and files

3. Change Permissions

4. Take Ownership

5. Create Files / Write Data

6. Create folders /Append Data

Ok now I have deployed the GFI Event Manager 7 for centralized logging and monitoring and I should alert in case of any above event occurs for both success and failure. But I am just getting the alerts/events for object deletion and if any user tries to access the properties of the folder I get alert "take ownership attempt for file and folder". But I am not getting any kind of information about the change permission i.e. if change any permission on that folder or create any new file or folder.

I have asked to GFI forum that why I am not getting these alerts they that GFI can only provide the alert for the events if they are in the Windows Security event log. Can any one help me that whether windows provide/generate the event i.e. for Change permission, creating new file or folder and deletion of subfolders and file??? If so what and how I can do this on Win XP as well as Win 2003 server. I am not sure might be I did not configured the GFI properly so guide me in case its not the window... Read more

Hi
Apologies for the title - I tried to encompass my problem.

Basically, it's this:

I have a drive that I need to copy all the data from and move to a larger drive (1TB DAS moved to a 6TB NAS device). I need to preserve the folder's date created and (if possible) modified attributes, as the data being copied is a WIP folder for a big CGI
project, and it's important to be able to track and find specific info/folders via date created... essentially the job is ongoing for another 6/7 months.

So, normal copy/paste won't do... thanks to this forum :) I've used Xcopy and worked out how to migrate the data and keep the all the new/copy folder's date created and modified attributes in line with the original/source.

Meaning I can make a perfect copy with folder dates that match.

However (and this is where I am head scratching), as soon as any new data is added into the copy folder, it's attributes change... not only the folder's modified date (which I was expecting) but also the date created folder.

This is a problem as the folders will have new data added to them on an ongoing basis... but, as both modified and created dates change to the time the new file is added, it causes issues when finding specific nested folders via creation date.

Example: Copy folder (done today via Xcopy) shows creation and modified date as per the source of 11/12/2012. As soon as any file is added into that folder, it updates modified and creation to the time the file w... Read more

A:How to maintain Folder attributes (date created/modified) on a 'Copy' - when a new file is added

BTW - with the Xcopy, it was a 2 stage process. /s/e/k first then a copy over but using /d/t/e/k. Copying in the first pass and then overwriting the folders in the second pass (with the correct creation date).

Thanks for the Robocopy/mir tip... that will work for bulk copying the data... sadly, when it's on the NAS, any additions to the folder change the creation date. Pretty sure it's the NAS file system (or lack of compatibility).

Going to test some spurious data using some other DAS drives - as I think it's the NAS (as per Lacie's reply).

Now I need to find a NAS that'll handle NTFS.

But at least I feel I'm getting somewhere now - thanks :)

When trying to add users to a shared folder, on a server, a problem occurs in that instead of showing the user name in the security tab of the folder we get the SID (S-1-5-21-####). This happens for all users we try to add. And for users in the same and different domains. We can sign on to the users PC/servers and the server with the shared folder with no problem . There seems to be no problems with the users PC/server. The user from another domain can see a shared folder, on another server, in the same domain as the server with the problem.

The "support tools" install contains some interesing utilities, have you installed it?

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=/directory/worldwide/en-gb/utility.asp

The one I find most useful is "windiff" -- when you get the hang of using it. It will compare two files and show you what is "different" between them. It can be used on the registry or any file for that matter.

As I recall you just run "setup.exe" from the support tools folder to install the entire set of utilities.

Once you install it, just check the "release notes" for the most complete documentation of what is included.

By the way, if you ever manage to put the "backup" utility to effective use, I'd appreciate hearing about it. Few seem to have gotten much mileage out of it from what I've seen, relying instead on "system restore".

To see if its recognized correctly, boot into Windows and right click on My Computer and go to Properties. It should show 2GB of RAM.

Hey there,

I'm new to the forum so please excuse any newbie posting mistakes.
Here goes. I have an Acer Aspire 5737z laptop. I bought it used and with 2gb of ram. The following is not my current issue but I feel like I have to mention it: Finding the right chipset and video drivers has always been a challenge for me, as the computer overheats to the point where it shuts down if I use the latest drivers found on the Nvidia website, even when playing such low-end games as WoW:TBC or TES:Morrowind. At the moment I am running a chipset and video driver that I can play WoW with just fine but L4D2 and pretty much anything else burns it up in about 10 minutes of playing. However, the guy I bought it from said that he had just opened it all up, cleaned it and replaced the thermal paste and the fan seems to be working just fine.

Ok, now to the current issue. In hopes of improving my gaming performance in such games as Left 4 Dead 2 and Dirt 2 I recently bought additional 2gb of RAM. I put it in, it does indicate both in bios and windows that I now have 4gb installed, however performance in neither Dirt 2 nor L4D2 has increased whatsoever. Not by a single fps (Dirt 2 runs at about 20 fps for those 10 minutes before it overheats). I took out (2) 512mb sticks and added (2) 1 gb sticks. It is still only recognizing 1024 mb of ram. I have tried different combinations of sticks and what slots they go into and the computer still only recognizes the 1024 mb. The computer is designed to see up to 2 gb ram. Hi everyone.
I am having problem with a malware. It came yesterday after I downloaded and run u.exe from ultrareach.com. I have tried some things (running scans, deleting temps etc) but i can't remove it.
It doesnt show much yet but when I start windows it immedietly begins sending and getting packages (wireless) (download / upload ratio like 10 / 1) and makes my connection slower, thats the way I am able to understood that I didnt get rid of it.
When I ran adaware, after a while bitdefender alert comes and scanning stops(froze),but i dont need to reboot, i just terminate adaware.
When i reboot in safe mode without connection and do this, no alert comes, but adaware doesnt clean.
I added screenshot but i dont know either it will help or not. Thanks alot.

Thanks in advance,

Once I placed inside the computer, I booted it up, but nothing appear on my monitor. My monitor then went to sleep a few moments later. My old 2x2 was from 2013 and my new 2x4 is from 2015. I tried different combinations(for example: one 2gb(old) and one 4gb(new) which worked) but as soon as I put the 2x2 in dual channels, it wouldn't boot my computer. I have a friend who has the same RAM as me except it says 2014 on it, and my new kit worked on his computer wonderfully. Could this be a problem of age? Or maybe my RAM is disfunctional?

Below are my specs:

MB: Asus M5a97 Le R2.0
CPU: AMD Phenom II X4 965 Black Edition
GPU: EVGA Gtx 560ti
RAM: 4gb (2x2) GSkill SDRAM 1600

Please tell me if I am missing information in my post,
Thank You

I hope this isn't breaching some form of etiquette but I finally got HJT downloaded and posted my log file which I didn't have in my previous posting .At least I hope this is what's needed , so here goes again ....
Almost overnight , my computer began acting screwey .I started getting pop-ups of all sorts , so I tried running Spy-Bot .I didn't complete the scan because I kept getting the pop-ups but I couldn't remove the already-listed entries . I checked my Control Panel (add/remove) and removed 3 unidentified entries . Then I tried doing a little research on the internet and found something in my Task Manager called 17PHolmes72.exe . I haven't gotten a pop-up in about an hour but I feel that the pop-ups were just a symptom of another problem (obviously), which is why I am here .While I am awaiting a response , I am going to try running Spy-Bot again and I also dl'ed AVG Anti-Spyware which I will probably run as well , then check back in a little Bit .
Any help or advice will be greatly appreciated . Not sure if I will receive an email when I get a response or if I need to check back later .I guess time will tell . Thanks again .

Hi, Welcome to TSG!!
Download SDFix and save it to your Desktop.
Very Important! Temporarily disable your anti-virus, script blocking and any anti-malware real-time protection before performing a scan. They can interfere with ComboFix and remove some of its embedded files which may cause "unpredictable results".
Click on this link to see a list of programs that should be disabled. The list is not all inclusive. If yours is not listed and you don't know how to disable it, please ask.
Remember to re-enable the protection again afterwards before connecting to the Internet.

Double click SDFix.exe and choose Install to extract it to its own folder on the Desktop. Please then reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following :
Restart your computer
After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, tap the F8 key continually;
Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu with options should appear;
Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode, then press "Enter".
Choose your usual account.

Open the c:\SDFix folder and double click RunThis.cmd to start the script.
Type Y to begin the script.
It will remove the Trojan Services then make some repairs to the registry and prompt you to press any key to Reboot.
Press any Key and it will restart the PC.
Your system will take longer that normal to restart as the fixtool will be running and removing files.
When the desktop loads the Fixtool... Read more

I have a Dell 8400 that came with a SATA drive. I have bought a second drive and wanted to be able to hot swap or hot boot the drive and was told that the onboard system wouldn't support that. I have the drive in an enclosure and bought a Sata Host PCI card that is supposed to handle hot swapping. Now the problem is Windows doesn't recognize the drive. If I power up the drive and boot the computer the drive doesn't show up in Device Manager. I can go into set up and it shows up in boot sequence but not in Drives. In boot sequense it is 6th. and shows 04:08-0 then the P/N of the drive. What do I need to do to get it working??

My supervisor has asked me to pull together the numbers that would be involved in upgrading the machines on one of our subnets from 2 to 4 gigabytes of RAM. I have determined a cost estimate and time frame, but he also asked me to provide some kind of metric for the increase in performance we might expect from the RAM. Something simple that will make sense to management, like "computer responsiveness will increase by 45%"

Have any of you ever been asked to provide information like this? Can you offer any advice for coming up with a general, meaningful metric?

Thanks!

A:Solved: How to Quantify Benifit of Added RAM

I have been asked to do this before by some upper management in my corporation and I had to present it to the CFO and a few other financial employees to justify the costs. I specifically had to explain the benefits of upgrading our basic Optiplex 790 and Latitude E6420 to 8 gigs of RAM instead of 4 for a total of about 100 machines that were being used in one of our departments that runs more intensive software.

Overall in all honesty the speed of the computer and performance will not greatly increase. I found that with RAM upgrades the longevity of the computers use increases due to the demand of future software upgrades memory usage. I would explain to them that a 2 gig to 4 gig increase in RAM would help the speed approximately 15-20% but up to 30% or 40% depending on the age of the machine and the amount of old software they have on the machine. From the sound of it these are older machines and with my experience RAM upgrades tend to have more of an impact.

Overall I would explain that due to the age of the machines a RAM upgrade would increase the remaining life of the machines and also increase performance depending on the specific machine and what software it has installed on it.

Hello

I added 4gb ram into my computer which already had 4gb in two seperate dimm slots. Now my computer struggles to boot (fans spin then turns off) multiple times before booting with no post. The CPU Led light is on and there are no beeps.

I have cleared CMOS and tried using only one dimm slot for ram still no post. I have taken everything apart and put it back together with no success. I know I shouldn't have added extra ram which is different mhz to my current ram in another dimm slot but I'm baffled as to why it won't boot still.

My specs are:

Asus Maximus Formula III
I7-860
Nvidia 560ti
2x2gb ram
1tb HD
500gb HD
128 ssd

Thanks, any help would be much appreciated.

Recently I added a small amount of physical memory to my computer. Previously I had 192MB and now I beleive I have 224MB of physical memory. When I check the physical memory by going to System Information, System Information tells me that I have 224.00 MB of Total Physical Memory. When I check for this in System Properties, it tells me that I have 192MB of RAM. How am I supposed to know if I really have 224.00 MB or 192 MB?

If I'm not mistaking, I beleive that RAM and Total Physical Memory are the same things.

Why am I getting two different values for RAM?

You can't just move an OS installation. When a OS is installed it is registered to the computer (motherboard ID).

You would have to re-install Windows 7 on the hard drive which would require you having a licence key.

If it's a retail copy of Windows 7 then you should be able to install Windows 7 on your PC (Retail copies can only be installed in one computer at a time)
If it's an OEM version it will only be able to be reinstalled when using your brothers motherboard.

Perhaps this goes in the Games forum but wanted to get your advice since I believe my problem is hardware related.

I have a game (Nascar 2003) that I used to play a lot, about 2 years ago. I tried running the game again recently and the game video freezes but the sound continues. After about 10 seconds the video "catches up" but then freezes again after about 5 seconds.

To try to resolve this I have:
deselected all unnecessary background programs thru msconfig
ran msconfig clean up
removed all programs not used
and
added 1 G of memory

I thought that the added memory would eliminate the problem but the game still freezes as described above.

Specs:
Pentium 4 w/ 2.8 GHz, 2.00 GB of Ram
Dell Dimension 4600
54.4 of 74.4 GB of free space

Reckon it's my video card??

Hello,

I have been tasked with calculating complaints using certain parameters. If 4 columns of a record match, I need to calculate the difference between subsequent dates appearing after the 1st date of the matching criteria (4 columns). The data will be be sorted so that the dates will appear in ascending order for the matching records.
For example if 4 records meet the criteria, the 1st date will be subtracted from the 2nd date, the 3rd date and the 4th date of the matching records. The number of days will be displayed in a new column.
I was wondering if there is some type of code to accomplish this. I hava attached an example.

Thanks in advance.
