Password protected sheet in excel and can't remember the password

Q: Password protected sheet in excel and can't remember the password

The company I work for has a control room where they have to enter data into excel spreadsheets with lots of links and macros, so we password protected the sheet so that they could only manipulate the cells that they needed. Myself and 2 other employees have access to the spreadsheet. Someone changed the password and the person does not remember what they changed it to. Is there any way to reset the password?

Preferred Solution: Password protected sheet in excel and can't remember the password

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I have a workbook for Orders with data retrieved from a Customers workbook that I want to password protect. At the moment, when the user wants to place a new order, he clicks on a button and a macro fills in the cells for the next row, actually entering the link in the form
ActiveCell.FormulaR1C1 = "=VLOOKUP(RC[-2],'C:\path\Customers.xlsx'!CustomerData,3,FALSE)"
The cells in the worksheet thus look up the data from the Customers workbook and offer these as suggested details for the new order - the user may then manually overtype e.g. delivery address etc. Once the order has been finalised, another command button removes the links from this row, pasting the entered values back into their own cells, and entirely deletes the sensitive data so no record of credit card data remains on this sheet.

My problem is that I want to secure the Customers workbook with a password. It contains credit card information, including authorisation code, as well as the customer's full name and address. But if I set a password on this workbook, the user is asked to supply the password not only when updating the workbook links but also for EACH instance of the macro filling in a linked cell - some 15 or so times per transaction.

I would like to perhaps set a global variable asking for the password when the orders sheet is first opened, and store it for the duration of the session, then lose it when the workbook is closed.

Does anyone know how to change the password for a Excel 2010 spreadsheet?

We have one, we know the password, but need to change it as many people that shouldn't know it, does. But can't figure out how

We can't use Save As, as the spreadsheet is linked to other tables on the network. Just want to change the password that we already know, to a new one.

Looked here already, they just mention Save As:

We're used to Office 2003, so this is a big jump at work for us

Why not? You can save it with the exact-same filename, even with the Save As command. It's only from here you can choose the Tools drop-down, General Options, and then change the password from there.

Hello everyone,

I hope somebody can help with my problem.
There's a password protected workbook, that I need to copy structure from in order to create a template. There are about 50 worksheets in that workbook with lots of formulas. I just don't want to try and recreate everything (design and formulas) manually - cell-by-cell, because it would take weeks. Let alone mistakes that are inevitable. When I try to just copy any worksheet from workbook in question and paste it to newly created workbook, all the formulas are gone and only actual calculated values get pasted. So, is there any workaround or trick to solve this problem? I don't seem to find any.
Thank you in advance.

When I password protect an Excel file and someone opens it, it says "file name is reserved by my name". How can I change the value of my name?

A:Solved: Excel Password Protected Files

I am not sure if this will work, because I can only sometimes get that "...reserved by (name)" to pop up - don't know why.
But you can try two things - go to Tools, Options, Security, and click "Remove personal information from file properties on save", then go to General and change the name there, prior to saving or password protecting the file.

I have encountered this problem which is bugging me for days now.
I was just creating back ups of my files to a different location of my PC (diff. partition, to be exact), the usual copy and paste. After a few minutes, I got this error that says 123.xlsx cannot be copied because the file is missing. I decided to skip it and continue backing up other files. After copying, I tried to locate and open the 123.xlsx file. The file was there but upon opening and after entering the password, it says "The file is corrupt and cannot be opened." I have 3 files like this, all of which are password protected. So I'm assuming that the password protection of excel has something to do with it.

I have tried multiple excel recovery tools from google. Even the steps for recovering corrupted files from Microsoft website, none of them worked.

I'm using MS Excel 2013, windows 8.1 64 bit; if it helps.

Please, I'm desperate. The files are equal to months of work. ( I know, I know, i should back up my files more often.)

Best regards,

I have 2 corrupted Excel files that I store on Microsoft SharePoint.  I store hundreds of other Excel 2013 files there, but 2 recently became corrupted.  Actually, the only 2 that became corrupted were password protected.  When I try to open each file, it says that they can't be opened because they are corrupted.
I've tried every available recover option and advice; recover formula, data, excel recovery software, open and repair, etc.  I believe that because the files are password protected, standard Excel recovery programs won't work.  I've tried 6 of the more common ones that come up in a google search and they all can't repair the file.  I can't remove the password because it won't open due to the corruption.  In other words, I don't have the option to enter a password because it says that it is corrupted before I have a chance to enter a password.
I've heard that it might be ransom ware or a virus, but nothing has popped up on my computer and all of my non-password protected Excel files are corrupted.
I've tried opening and repairing the file with Excel 2007, too...no luck.
I'm running Windows 8.1, Excel 2013.  Both corrupted Excel files are small...less than 300 kb.
I have the password, so has anyone else had this problem?  If not, does anyone know of someone I could hire to extract the data that I had in the spreadsheet?

As above really. Trying to create a network for file sharing, as have upgraded the 'server' (part of a Workgroup, not a Domain) from WinXP to Win7 and experienced problems ever since. Ironically the problems haven't mainly been with sharing files between Win7 and WinXP systems, but between 2 Win7 systems.

I bought a new Win7 laptop and tried to connect it to the server, but it hasn't had Read/Write privileges over the files in the Win7 server. Entering a username and password to gain access to the servers folders has not been a problem, and as far as I know, opening files such as documents has not been a problem either. However, when trying to save an edited document, access is denied, and if I try to open an executable file (this is necessary for a node installation), it prompts me for a network password.

Every combination possible of username and password from the 2 systems (including '\' or 'SYSTEMNAME\' before the username) has not worked. I tried syncing the times which was apparently a previous problem, but to no avail. I am unable to access Local Security Policy, as the server is running off Home Premium. I have tried creating a new workgroup, removing and changing passwords, enabling guest access to the network through the Windows Resource Kit Command Shell, creating identical users on both computers, but nothing appears to have worked.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance!

I've read through pages and pages of search results for this, but they all seem to be between Win7 and XP, or something not quite the same as my problem.

Here at home we are all using Windows 7 (a mix of Home Premium and Ultimate). I have an HTPC which has all our DVDs on. This PC has a few shares so we can access our movies across the network.

I have set up the shares using the Sharing Wizard thing, and set 'Everyone' to Read/Write. I can verify the permissions for the shares in Advanced Sharing > Permissions, and see that 'Everyone' has full control.

In the Network and Sharing Center, the settings for sharing are as follows:Network discovery = ON
File and printer sharing = ON
Public folder sharing = OFF (no need for it)
Media streaming = ON (for WMP, Xbox)
Use 128-bit encryption = ON
Password protected sharing = OFF
Allow Windows to manage Homegroup connections = ON
I should point out after the last bullet point that we are not using a Homegroup.

So with all that as it is, whenever I try to connect to the HTPC shares from another computer, I still get prompted for a username and password, with the "X Invalid user name and password" message beneath the text boxes. I can, however, connect without a problem from my laptop, which has the same username and password as the admin account on the HTPC.

The strange thing now - if I type "anonymous" into the username box and try to connect, I get in. Everything then works as it should. So either all... Read more

A:Password protected sharing is OFF, still asked for username/password?

You might want to check that the time/date settings are correct on the HTPC. If they aren't correct on one of your machines it will give you a password prompt as you described.

Also under power options, make sure that it's not set to require a password when coming out of sleep state.

Go to Control Panel, then Power Options "look upper left side". Click "Require a password on wakeup".

Select the radio button "Don't Require a Password" and then Save Changes. Your done.

How to force IE 11 to ask for saving credentials again for just one web site, after having accidentally sellect not to remember password for that particular site. Please, take into account that:

- I'm totally aware that storing credentials is not a good security practice, but in my particular case this is what I need to do.

- I know that reseting IE or similar approachs will do the job, but doing that I'll lost more tan 70 web sites credentials. I need a solution not involving loose all the web credentials stored.
- I also know that there is way to do the trick "lying" to IE using a modified but similar username, but this only works in some web sites, depending on the kind of login mechanism used. In my particulare case this trick also does not work.
- I also know that there was a registry hack for this particular problem, but this does not work with IE last versions.

I'm basically doing a GCSE piece of work on Excel. MS Excel 07.

I've got a section of data which I have grouped, using the Data tab.

This enables the data to be hidden, and displayed by clicking a little + sign, besides the collum labels.

Thing is, once I've protecteded the sheet (which I must do), the grouped feature cannot be used. When I try to click the + sign, to display the grouped data, it says I must first unprotect the sheet.

How can I enable the use of the grouped feature, in a protected sheet?

Any changes that take effect, must be compatible with the 03 version.

It's a requirement for the piece of work.

I've got an issue / question that I cannot figure out why it happens.
I have attached a asample file to illustrate it.
There are three coloured cells.
The yellow colored cell has nothing, the green colred cell has Data Validation for a List and the blue colered cells has data validation for a whole number between 0 and 10

I added a ... BefodeDoubelClick action to display something, in this case a Message Box.

If the sheet is unprotected, the message box is displayed if one of the selected coloered cells is doubleclicked.

There are 2 buttons, one to pritect and one to un protect the sheet

However, If the sheet is protected, the cell with tha Data Validation List (green) will not trigger the action to display the message box.
If you select this cell and double click elsewhere on the sheet it will work.

Anybody know why this is?
Just curious.

Guess unprotected sheet is like "Design mode".
Once you protect it, only "view mode" is possible for the drop down list.

I have a user that is having a similar problem to the one described in this thread: http://forums.techguy.org/business-applications/593620-solved-excel-password-protected-files.html

The difference is that she is having this problem in Excel 2010. I tried navigating to File > Options > General and then removing her name from the 'Username' field, but after saving the workbook, closing Excel and then trying to open the workbook again, she is prompted by Office to enter her name and initials. Even if we delete her information from here and click 'ok' the password prompt comes up (as it should) but still shows '<file name>' is reserved by <user>...

The workbook was originally created as an Excel 97-2003 workbook and apparently has macros; I tried saving it as a .xlsx but had to save it as a macro-enabled .xlsm file. I then tried the same steps to remove her username, but this did not resolve the issue.

If that does not work, try

According to all my settings, it is set to remember my password, but evidently it continues to prompt me for my password every few minutes.

Furthermore, I have sent 2 emails in the last hour, with no attachments, just a few KB each, and both are still sitting idly in my Outbox. Why!!!???

This problem has been exacerbated in the last few days for some reason.

I would praise the person who can reconcile this for me.

Hi, There is a general policy on the Forum not to provide methods to bypass Windows log-on passwords, however a local computer shop would be able to do this for you. Another option, if all personal data etc is backed-up, would be to reset the notebook to its 'Factory Condition' and then set it up from the beginning ? if you don?t have Recovery Media, the notebook will have shipped with a Recovery Partition which can be accessed at boot - ie shutdown the notebook, then start tapping away at f11 as soon as you power on. A full guide on this can be found on the following link. http://support.hp.com/us-en/document/c01867418 Regards, DP-K

A:Remember Password in IE

The following applies to Internet Explorer 11:

All IE11 saved passwords are stored encrypted n Windows Registry under HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\IntelliForms\FormData:
The information is completely encrypted and practically impossible for someone else outside your own network to access. As long as your Windows user account is protected with a strong password it is safe to let IE11 to store your login credentials.

An example of how it works then with saved credentials. I want to check my Outlook.com mail using IE11. On Sign In page I start typing my username, after a few letters IE shows me stored users starting with that character combination:
I select my email address, IE11 now automatically retrieves the password and inserts it to its place and I can log in:
Simple and safe. Brink has made an excellent tutorial about IE11 credentials, see it here.

Do you use a 3rd party Antivirus? Most of them these days have a vault that will log into a site for you via Autofill.
There are probably independent programs that do it also, just be careful who you get one from. Beware of backdoors.

I think 8 uses Credential Manager (Winkey+S type Credential Manager)

Here is a little info on the stock Vault. After a little reading I found that it works for IE specifically.

Some of the advice I have read in the past said I would need a password recovery disc or something...

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

A:Can't remember password...

If you have a password reset disk created for your computer you can use that to get back in. Other than that I cannot tell you how to get past the password on your computer unfortunately. No subject matter will be allowed whose purpose is to defeat existing copyright or security measures. If a user persists and/or the activity is obviously illegal the staff reserves the right to remove such content and/or ban the user. This would also mean encouraging the use or continued use of pirated software is not permitted, and subject to the same consequences.

Is there a way to enter a list of websites into IE that for which it should automatically remember the passwords once i enter them? i don't want autocomplete to pop up on every page and have to say yes/no, i just have three websites i want it to remember passwords for and that's it. what can i do? thanks!

A:remember password

i know that password memory is an offered feature in both firefox and safari for the mac... I am not experienced in internet explorer, but i suggest you switch browsers, as IE, though popular, is very unsecure and has many security holes. consider mozilla if this is what you're looking for.
