Q: Windows 7 from usb to Lenovo G505; Rufus Error...

Hello All... I got Lenovo G505 as gift from someone which has 2Gb ram, 1Ghz CPU with 64 bit windows 8... I didn't like Windows 8 so wanted to install Win 7 from USB, so i prepared Win7 usb with PowerIso and tried to change bios to boot from usb, there i got puzzled as it was different than normal bios so i searched and changed UEFI into Legacy Mode which made laptop boot from usb so i formatted hard drive in the set up as i was pretty confident the process would go smoothly but it said,"Windows can not be installed on this disk, The selected disk is of GPT Partition Style"... Searched brought me here where i started following RUFUS tutorial to make usb but as i clicked START after doing in initial steps, it game me following error...
Pardon me if my question is lengthy but i can't proceed without help now as my head is spinning.. Thanks

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hello everyone, Since about five days ago, everytime I turn on my laptop, it starts normally. It goes into the black-background lenovo startup with a white loading symbol. Then, after maybe 5 rotations of the dots in the loading symbol, it freezes. It does not progress into starting up. At this point, I usually turn off my laptop by holding the power button. If I don't turn it off myself, it turns off automatically a few minutes later.  Every 2 or 3 times I turn on my computer, instead of the loading symbol, it turns into a "Preparing Automatic Repair" mode. I have seen the loading symbol for this mode but then it disappears and nothing happens and it turns off automatically after ten minutes or so. I've seen the same solution that help others with the same problem which is to take out the DVD from the laptop. I did this and my problem has not changed.  edit: g500 to g505

My W10 64bit Dell desktop installed KB3194798 on 10/12/2016 using Windows Update (WU) so now it is 1607 1493.321.
Today I tried WU to update my Lenovo G505 W10 laptop and I think it might have been KB3194798 that has killed my laptop, but I cannot even get the laptop to go past the black screen to the Lenovo display when trying to boot.
Here's the history...
Today I pushed the power button to turn it on and found that my wife had left it on and over the many hours it had gone into (I assume) a powersaving mode that made me think it needed to boot.
The screen showed that WU was up and some KB was at 94%. I left it alone and a few minutes later it told me the install was ready to go. So I clicked to let it WU do the install. The install failed saying some files were missing but it let me click on "retry".
I think it failed a 2nd time. The 3rd time it appeared to be installing OK, and I went to work for a few hours. On my return it showed that the laptop required a restart to complete the WU installs - that's pretty normal after letting WU do an install of a "cumulative", I think. So I clicked to restart and walked away. When I returned hours later, the laptop was still displaying the Lenovo boot-time logo and the spinner was spinning. I powered down the laptop by holding down the power button. Now the laptop will not even display the Lenovo boot-time logo. The little power LED is lit. The laptop is on wall power - not battery, btw.

i bought this Lenovo G505 about a year and a half ago and for the most part i love it, it does everything i need it to do within reason. but i have had one nagging problem with it the whole time and up until today i blamed it on different size sticks and memory speeds, but today I bought brand new corsair select DDR3L 1600mhz memory 2x8gb (16gb). sadly the problem still exists.it seems that no matter what stick of ram is in the second slot, that while the bios recognizes the total, and windows claims to recognize the total, the second stick is not USABLE memory. please view the photo to see exactly what i am referring to. I have tried a multitude of different operating systems (win 7,8,8.1,10, countless linux distros) all give me the same problem. I would REALLY like to know how to fix this problem as currently having 16gb of memory and only 7.45 usable is heartbreaking...

Hi  3razar3,Can you check if windows is using the half of the memory as hardware reserve? To check this open up Resource Monitor from Taskmanager. If you see that your missing memory is being reserved  for hardware do the following steps. Open msconfig - > click on Boot - > Advanced options - > untick maximum memory, restart the system. Hope this helps. Cheers,

Hi there, My Lenovo G505 is not booting anymore. I had wanted to scan my laptop with Kaspersky Rescue CD, and therefore, I wanted the laptop to boot from the CD. So, I searched for how to boot the laptop from CD, and I followed the solution provided in this thread by Solid_Cruver: https://forums.lenovo.com/t5/Lenovo-P-Y-and-Z-series/Lenovo-Z500-BIOS-legacy-support/m-p/1124815/hig... As written in that post, I first booted to BIOS Setup, then under Exit, I changed the "OS Optimized Defaults" to "Other OS". I then hit F9 to load defaults. Then, under BIOS, I changed to Legacy boot and Legacy first... both options that are shown one below the other. After that I saved the BIOS setup and exited. After that when the laptop boots, it just keeps showing Lenovo on the screen, and under that the dotted circle keeps on spinning, and nothing else happens. After waiting for a while, I turned power off by pressing the power off button for a while. Then, I pressed the Nova button, but no display comes up, but the light for power remains on. Again, nothing happened there too. Just a black screen, even no blinking cursor, or any kind of display. After waiting a while, I pressed the power button, and laptop powered off. How do I get to the Nova screen, or get the computer to boot? Or, how to just set the BIOS setup again to what it was before? This isn't my laptop, but of my friend, and I don't want it to go bad :/. Please ... Read more

A:Lenovo G505 unable to boot

OK, I tried again after power off on the Lenovo screen. I then pressed the Nova screen, and this time, the display was there (phew), and I got the options for the Nova screen. I went into BIOS, and I changed the options for "OS Optimized Defaults" to "Win8 64-bit", and in BIOS, changed to UEFI. I saved the settings, and exited. But still, the computer is not able to boot. It again shows the screen with Lenovo written and the dotted circle keeps spinning. What else do I have to do to get the laptop to boot normally from the OS? Under the BIOS settings, I noted that Secure Boot was Enabled, but the Secure Boot Status was Disabled. The laptop isnt booting because of this setting? How do I get the Secure Boot Status to Enabled, and how do I get the computer to boot normally from the OS on the HDD?

When finished, hit Load default settings (just right above it) then set these additional settings:

Boot Priority = Legacy First
USB Boot = Enabled

Now Press F10 to save and exit

Now Insert your USB, Turn the computer OFF.

I am becoming increasingly frustrated with my Lenovo G505. It has failed to connect to wireless since I purchased it. When in warranty it was sent away on a couple of occasions for 'repair'. However it continues to show connected, but then drops to limited every minute or so. Its been locked away for the last few months due the above frustrations, but wanting to work from home I thought I'd give it one more try. I have browsed a number of topics, but have not had much success. Is anyone able to point me in the direction of a possible known fix? Hoping Lenovo can restore my faith.

A:Lenovo G505 DVD drive not working

Hi Arm-1969,

Welcome to the Forums

As per the query we understood that you are facing issue the DVD not working in your Lenovo G505 laptop.

Check with bootable DVD, does the DVD is detected in BIOS?

To resolve this issue, remove the affected filter drivers.

To do this, click on Start,  type regedit in the search box, then click on regedit in the Programs list.

If you are prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, key in your password or click continue.

Locate, and then click the following registry subkey: hkey_local_machine\system\currentcontrolset\control\class\{4d36e965-e325-11ce-bfc1-08002be10318}

Note that there could be several instances of the registry subkey that is mentioned in the above step so make sure that you are in the appropriate registry subkey before modifying the upperfilters and the lowerfilters values.

To verify that you are in the appropriate registry subkey, make sure that the default data value is
DVD/ CD-Rom and the class data value is CDrom.
In the right panel, right-click upperfilters , and then click delete . Click yes to confirm the removal of the upperfilters registry entry. In the right panel, right-click lowerfilters , and then click delete . Click Yes to confirm the removal of the lowerfilters registry entry... Read more

I purchased a Lenovo G505 laptop for my Girlfriend back in 10-01-13, I purchased it with a exstended 1 year warranty,, but anyways, she likes to play Sim3 ALOT, and i mean ALOT, which isnt a graphically heavy game for a A6 APU 4 GB of DDR 3 Ram, but i know that the game takes ALOT of resources for some reason, but i notcied while she was playing it it takes nearly a half hour for her game to load before she can start playing, So i decided to upgrade her RAM and HDD, to a SSD and 16 GB of Ram, which brought her APU shared graphics memeory from 256 to 512 ( which to me seems pretty low but from what i could tell there is no way to change that, I was hoping for atleast 1gb), all said and done, her game boots up pretty fast now, only takes about 10 minutes, which is great, but since the upgrade, her laptop has started to get really hot, which this laptop usually stayed pretty cool, I even Dust it out regularly with a can of air, and keep it pretty dust free. she keeps the laptop closed on top of the TV stand and uses the HDMI cable and a wireless keyboard and mouse, and plays on a TV, for on the couch expeirance, but since then we have had to invest in 2 fans, 1 laptop fan with a 140 mm that runs at 1600 rpm, and a small window fan that sits on the CD drive side of the laptop to help blow any hot air lingering AWAY from the laptop ( dont want it facing the side vent, due to the fan pushing hot air out, and ruin the fan, and fighting with its sell to keep it cool), and still it ov... hi MattQE,

Welcome to the Forums.

Just to verify, is the unit originally Windows 8 and this problem occured after you upgraded to Windows 8.1? Any changes that you made to the machine before the problem occured?

From the looks of it, this seems like a hardware failure but can you try the following:
1. Boot into the BIOS and set the following options (if applicable):

Security Tab:
Secure Boot = Disabled

Exit Tab:
OS Optimized Defaults = Other OS / Disabled

2. When done, press Fn+F10 to save and exti and observe.

Let me know how it goes.

Some forum members have reported a variety of Wifi issues with their G505 laptops. Their reports range from showing "Connection is limited", to Wifi connections dropping repeatedly, to being unable to make a Wifi connection at all. I combined multiple threads in order to assist forum members with troubleshooting solutions.

If your G505 was upgraded to Windows 8.0 or 8.1 and then lost connectivity, or you recently purchased a G505 running Windows 8.0 or 8.1 and are unable to connect, try following the instructions posted by Vikramsbox to restore the connection through the Lenovo Communications Utility.

For non-Windows 8.0 or 8.1 users, start troubleshooting with the basics:

The most recent WLAN, BIOS, and Power Management drivers from Lenovo can be downloaded here: http://support.lenovo.com/us/en/products/laptops-and-netbooks/lenovo-g-series-laptops/lenovo-g505-no...
It is also good practice to verify your Wifi is activated by following the instructions from Neokenchi.
Check Power Management settings to ensure your laptop isn't turning off the Wifi as noted by Dannyk1.
Check to see that Airplane Mode is set to OFF by following the instructions provided by Shiv_K.

After trying those steps, if you still experience a Wifi issue with your G505, other troubleshooting steps have been noted in this thread. This includes a whitelist of accepted replacement WLAN cards posted by Topmahof and a 3rd party driver which resolved wifi issues fo... Read more

Hello.

Here is the driver for you.

CHIPSET DRIVER/AHCI DRIVER FOR WINDOWS 7 (32-BIT, 64-BIT) - LENOVO G405, G505

*Edit* Sorry, I was a little ahead of myself there, I take it the Windows installation doesn't see your new HD when the window for the Disk/Partition selection comes up.

Are you trying to install Windows from a USB key? Because I've seen this on many occasions, and switching your key over to another USB port on your machine gets rid of this error. Try another USB port for the installation, preferrably a USB 2 port, as the USB 3 ports require a driver in Windows to function properly.

- Choose ?yes? to connect to the internet & download the file
- Choose ?no? to leave the existing ISO file unmodified
If you don?t know what to do, you should select ?yes?.'

I know it suggests to select 'yes' if unsure, but I'm always apprehensive about downloading things I know little or nothing about. Can anyone explain what's going on here???

I was getting ready to download Rufus but wondered if I should use the Portable or Installer Version? Is there any difference with functionality?

Thanks, Nasty7

A:Rufus Download

Both executables are identical. There really isn't an installed version.

From the Rufus site:

Download the executable and run it – no installation is necessary.

A:cannot boot from a usb created by RUFUS

with the drive inserted power up and start tapping F9 once per second, this should give you a device boot menu, then select the usb device and hit enter key, it should boot from it now.

After much research into how to boot from a USB containing SystemRescueCD, I followed the good advice of several on this forum and chose to download Rufus. My Bitdefender 2015 immediately gave the following message.rufus.jpg

Hmm, I never had a problem with Rufus. You may use Yumi instead. Download YUMI - MajorGeeks

I am not trying to get in trouble or any one else I want to run some tools like sysinternals suite right off of the thumb drive but not install them or make it bootable. Just to pick a tool and use it.

Is this even possible?  Rufus they mostly talk about booting or installing complete operateing systems.
This I do not want. Just a thumb drive that I can plug into anything without installing. Like a live cd/dvd.

A:make a live usb with rufus but not bootable

Can't you just do this  http://www.howtogeek.com/school/sysinternals-pro/lesson1/

I don't think this is a Linux question though.

I'm trying to install Windows 10 in an external media. I'm using an SSD that I put into a USB3 enclosure, which works very well when connected to the PC. I'm supposed to specify, on rufus, where i want the Windows 10 iso image to be installed. Rufus can't "see" my SSD.

I had downloaded the latest Media Creation Tool which is the Windows 10 AU update and downloaded the ISO file. Then, I used Rufus to create a bootable USB flash drive whenever I need to perform a clean re-install of Windows 10 AU.

I do not want to install the AU update yet, but just need to find out the integrity of my newly created bootable USB media with the Windows 10 AU setup files on it.

In order to test if it boots up to the setup screen, can I test that on my own machine and then exit out of it without wiping my current Windows 10 (1511) installation?

I just need to test the bootable USB media created with Rufus to ensure if it boots up to the Windows 10 setup screen.
In other words, I just want to test the integrity of the USB bootable flash drive created with Rufus.

A:Testing a Win10 Bootable USB media created with Rufus?

The Windows install media will only wipe out your computer if you proceed with the install. Booting into the media will not do that. So yes you can test it on your working computer without any risk.

Hey guys...

Been at this a while and need some help.

Got a new machine (Qosmio X70-B-102) which like most tries to force me to use Windows 8 platform preinstalled... no chance thankyou... my machine and I'll run it how I choose to.

So my plan has always been to do a clean install of 7 x 64 pro which I already own.

Initially I learn that the BIOS needs to be changed from UEFI to CSM... no prob that's easy... but the hybrid SSHD is set up with GPT partitions and my 7 wont install unless they are MBR.

At the advanced options screen I can delete all partitons and format but I end up with one single unallocated drive that remains as a GPT cos the advanced options don't offer the necessary conversion to MBR.

So... I do some reading and discover that in fact Windows 7 WILL install to GPT providing the installer I use can do that and as some will no doubt know the RUFUS installer allows us to select 'GPT partition scheme for UEFI computers'

Hmmm... brilliant I thought... I can keep using the UEFI firmware advantages by installing onto GPT partitions.

So I got Rufus and created my bootable windows 7 x64 Pro selecting the 'GPT partition scheme.....'

Only change I then make to the BIOS is to disable secure boot and boot order to USB.

Standard 'Windows loading' white progress bar on black screen.... then the recognisable logo begins to go thru it's motions of 'Starting Windows' and the 4 coloured squares fly around to form the logo.... only it never complet... Read more

A:Installing 7x64 issue on 8.1 machine using Rufus UEFI bootable

Make sure the Rufus settings are exactly as pictured in Option One of UEFI Bootable USB Flash Drive - Create in Windows and do not change once you load the ISO.

Where did you get the ISO. Check it's HASH to confirm it is intact, from Step 1 of Clean Reinstall Windows 7 .

Did you boot the installer as a UEFI device? It is not going to install to UEFI if not, and if it doesn't show up as a UEFI device after Rufus formatting, then it is either formatted incorrectly or the BIOS settings are not yet correct.

It may require Legacy BIOS settings if UEFI First to Boot is present. It may require some level of CSM, as long as you can boot the flash stick as a UEFI device.

If in doubt about settings, let us see the ones in BIOS related to Secure Boot, UEFI, Legacy BIOS, CSM and BIOS Boot Priority order. Attach camera pics using paper clip icon in reply box.

Use the BIOS Boot menu key to trigger flash stick with HD or Windows Boot Manager set first to boot.

So I have a Lenovo i5 with Windows 8 pre-installed, some weeks ago I had a problem(don't exactly know what), which led to my computer warning me to back up my files, but before it could back up my files it crashed and ever since than whenever I try to boot it up, it says its missing the Boot Configuration Data/hard drive maybe damaged and I would need some disks to reinstall/repair it. Called Lenovo and got the Os reinstallation disks and a standalone Windows 7 recovery DVD to back up my files to a hard drive. Though even with the Windows 7 recovery Dvd their appears to be an issue, whenever I tried to get the Windows 7 recovery DVD to play(to back up my files and junk) it doesn't function too well.

What happens is, it stays on the lenovo screen for about 5 to 7 minutes(has been happening since the bcd error), then goes to the boot manager, where there are different options to choose to boot from, a Lenovo Rep told me to enter the Sata ODD, and then I got a "window files Loading" sign with a black background, which is followed by a "Starting Windows" sign(windows logo included) and then it goes into a grey/black screen that only shows my mouse cursor and nothing else(though I can control the brightness of the screen and can't do anything else).

Any advice on what I should do to try to get my computer to work or back up my files some way, because so far the recovery DVD has been no help.

A:BCD Error for Lenovo Windows 8

This sounds to me like the hard drive is dying.
If it is, each time you try to access it you decrease the chances of being able to recover the data.

So now's the time to make a choice:
- to continue to try on your own to recover it.
- to get a technician to try ($100 to $500 in most cases - usually they won't charge if they can't recover anything)
- to get a data recovery service to do it ($250 to $200 in most cases - they'll usually get something, but it can cost you!)

IMO the easiest thing would be to purchase another HDD and see if you can install Windows on it.
If so, it may be worth keeping the new HDD (purchase it from a shop that'll let you return it for a full refund if it doesn't work for you)

This way you've isolated the bad HDD and can work on it at your leisure.
The next thing would be to get a USB hard drive caddy to connect the drive to a working computer.
That way (if possible) you can copy the data over if you're able to read it.
If able to read it, copy immediately - you don't know how much time you've got!!!!
Grab the Users folder first - it's got nearly everything that you'll need.

Where did you get the WIndows 10 installation ISO? How is it burned to DVD or written to flash stick?

Check the BIOS Security tab to see that Secure Boot is disabled.

Hello,

I just purchased a Lenovo Laptop recently (specifically lenovo Z50-70). From the second day since I switched on the laptop, I began to get an error as follows:
"Your computer ran into an error and needs to restart. We are collecting some info, and then we'll restart for you"

I have done only 2 major changes to the laptop. Firstly, I updated windows 8.1. Secondly, I moved some space from local disk C to D.

I have no idea why is this error caused.

1. Is the error caused due to windows 8 (or) some driver files?
2. Is it because of some deleted windows files? (Although I have not deleted anything!!)
3. Can a simple re-installation of windows 8.1 solve this issue?
4. Is it because of some hardware issue?

Can someone please help me with this issue? Any help will be highly appreciated.

Thanks,
Harry.
