Erratic behaviour -- sometimes boots, sometimes doesn't

Q: Erratic behaviour -- sometimes boots, sometimes doesn't

Okay, I've fiddled with this for a while now, a couple days ago when I turned on the computer I would get an error message saying how system/config (something like that) was corrupt. I then googled this and did not really find a solution for it. Almost all of the people that encountered this problem did not know where the source of the problem was. I figure I would give reformatting a shot. After formatting, I figure that I can now use my computer with no worries about more problems but then now different problems appeared.

When I turn on the computer sometimes it would boot up nicely with no problems at all but sometimes it would not boot. The computer hangs right before the windows xp flag appears with the loading bar under it. What I see instead is a different loading bar (DOS style) that spans the entire width of my screen. I thought maybe this was just a problem with my installation of XP, so then I go and boot into my Ubuntu installation (I use grub bootloader and the two OS's are on their own partitions on the same physical drive) and the Ubuntu freezes at the loading screen as well. I went through testing each component of my computer afterwards.

I figure that my processor should be okay since I managed to get this far while loading the computer (I could be totally wrong on this part). I also tested the RAM with memtest86+ that was on the Ubuntu disc. I finished one pass with no errors so I guess the memory is okay. The graphics card should also be okay since I am not seeing any abnormalities with my display save for the one red pixel that always appears on my monitor. I suspected my hard drive of being the culprit afterwards. One of the times I booted the computer, somehow it managed to work (I did mention this erratic behavior) so I downloaded Seatools for Windows to have it see what was wrong with the hard drive. For some reason the program refused to test my hard drive and refused to accept that my hard drive was in fact made by Seagate (could it be that it's SATA, since the XP setup has problems detecting SATA drives without installing the drivers). The next thing I tried was Seatools for DOS, and it told me that I had no hard drive. That was impossible since I could boot up into Windows erratically. I then tried Western Digitals Data Lifeguard program and Spinrite. Both programs said my hard drive was okay. I am guessing that the only two components left that could be the problem could be the PSU and the motherboard but I do not really know what I can do to test those.

EDIT: I also noticed that if I leave the computer off for a while it will work again when I boot (in fact, I am typing this very post with the computer in question right now). This leads me to believe that it could be a heat problem, but I see all the fans spinning and when I feel the air coming out of the computer it doesn't feel that hot.

System specs:
AMD 64 3000+ @ 2.0 Ghz processor
Asus K8V SE Deluxe mobo
2x512MB memory (not sure what kind)
ATi Radeon 9800XT/Pro (not sure)
Enermax EG365P 350W +12V 26A max
WIndows XP Home/Ubuntu 8.04 (dual boot using grub bootloader)
Seagate Barracuda 7200.9 SATA 80GB
LG DVD Writer

Thanks, any help is appreciated

PS: Sorry for the long post, I wanted to be as concise as possible.

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

I have been using and UPS with my PC without problem for more than 20 years, but for the last few months it has caused eratic behaviour. My current UPS is an APC Back-UPS RS 1500. This gives me a good 22 minutes breathing space when the power is cut according to the countdown on the LED screen. However, as soon as the alarm goes and the UPS seamlessly provides power from its charged battery, the control of my mouse becomes increasingly more erratic and it takes several minutes and much patience, not only to place the cursor over relevant parts of the screen, but also to wait for those places to become active before I can save work and turn off. Only with a reboot does the problem disappear. The UPS is not totally useless, as I can save work, but its usefulness is only a fraction of what it should be. I'm assuming this is hardware related, but if anyone thinks my thread should be moved elsewhere, feel free. Any ideas?

Hello guys. I think I might have a problem. About 2 days ago I started getting errors about different Windows services not working (can't remember exactly which, but if needed I can dig up the logs). After I got these, I also got a series of BSOD's. I managed to restore my laptop to a previous checkpoint via System Restore, as Windows downloaded some updates and I thought these were the cause. I also did a check disk and a defragmention of my drives, together with a Spybot and NOD32 scan. Cleaned what I found, and I thought that was that. After all of that, I started getting warnings from NOD32 of attacks, coming in from the C:\Windows\TEMP folder, all blocked. They were about 25 threats in the last 24 hours or so, and before all of this happened, I never got any.

Any help will be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

I have a 9 month old HP dm1, (Win7 / 3GB / AMD Fusion Processor), that is driving me crazy with it's erratic mouse behavior that I hope someone can help me with.

I have tried many different makes of wireless and even 2 different makes of BlueTooth mouses, I have tried it with the computer's touch pad turned off, as well as turned on. I have checked and installed all known updates to the system and the drivers. Scanned for apparent IQ conflicts and even signal interference. Yet, it continues to exhibit a "mind of it's own" regardless of which program is running. And yes, it does the same thing if no mouse is attached and I'm just trying to use the built in touchpad all by itself.

What happens is that the mouse pointer just randomly jumps to some totally random part of the screen, and begins entering my typing there. Or, it will randomly highlight a block of text, and as I continue to type, it erases what I had previously entered and over writes it with what I was in the process of adding. Or it opens up some menu, or even "click on" a link ! IT IS SO ANNOYING !

Any ideas what to do to stop this erratic behaviour ?

After I have used the computer for a while, my mouse changes behaviour. It requires that I do another click to deactivate whatever action it was doing.

For instance, when scrolling down a directory of photos, if I don't click before moving the cursor from the scroll bar to the photo icons, it will highlight all the photos it passes over...

Same kind of behaviour when I clone part of a photo in Photoscape. If I don't click after finishing the cloning, the cursor will hang on to the cloning brush and drag the cloning over everything it goes over, even the function buttons (undo, redo..) at the bottom of the screen.

Is there a way to avoid this?

My computer is a Lenovo ThinkPad T520 with Windows7. Thank for for any input regarding this issue.

In the last 2/3 days I have found the following issues on my PC running 2000 SP4:
a wallpaper icon of the Bee Gees (!) flashes whenever I shutdown or use ALT/CTRL/DEL; sometimes (at random) multiple windows are opened and the mouse will move in directions not wanted.

I believe this to be caused by a virus of some sort, however my AV (CA eTrust) is up to date, has not detected anything during scans. I ran Spybot and AdAware and the issues reported were fixed, I also run ZoneAlarm Pro and this has not alerted me of anything. I never open mail attachments unless I know where they come from and delete any SPAM emails I may receive.
I have searched extensively the best known AV sites, but none seem to list this type of behaviour...has anyone out there?

go to here and download 'Hijack This!'.
First make a folder on your computer in my documents called Hijackthis and then Unzip it to that folder.
Then doubleclick the Hijackthis.exe.
Click the "Scan" button, when the scan is finished the scan button will become "Save Log" click that and save the log.
Go to where you saved the log and click on "Edit > Select All" then click on "Edit > Copy" then Paste the log back here in a reply.
It will possibly show issues deserving our attention, but most of what it lists will be harmless or even required,
so do NOT fix anything yet.
Someone here will be happy to help you analyze the results.

The touchpad on my ProBook 450 G3 has behaved erratically on and off for the three months I've had it.The problem:Sometimes the touchpad freezes if I rest my hands/arms anywhere on the brushed metal top (the keyboard tray, for want of a better word). The cursor won't move, scrolling and clicking doesn't work. If I hold my hands so that no part of my hands or arms touch the metal, not even on the edges, it will work ok (but I look perfectly ridiculous doing it). After a while (usually only a minute or so), it starts working normally again. And then, a few minutes later, seemingly at random, it happens again. At first, I thought I must be just a freak occurrence, then, when it kept recurring, that I'm doing something wrong. But the exact same thing happens when other people use my laptop.I'm guessing it's a hardware issue, because the only explanation I can think of is that my hands somehow ground the touchpad through contact with the metal casing (or something like that, anyway), and I'm fairly sure it's not supposed to do that.Any thoughts on what may be causing this, wheter there are som settings that might fix the issue, or any helpful hints?Apologies if the topic has already been covered - couldn't find posts that seemed to fit when I browsed the history.

Hi to all.... I've been using Nero 6 reloaded for ages now, to convert avi files (divx) into dvd playable format. So far i've had the odd error now and again as everyone does, but now its pretty much unusable. It'll usually transcode the movie but not burn onto a disc... it just spits the disc out.
I've tried various possible solutions such as updating nero, which didn't change anything..... then i decided to try the free trial of nero 7 which just restarted my PC halfway through trancoding. So then I uninstalled all nero products and re-installed nero 6 which gave me the same results as before, although i used it to burn a data DVD.
I then upgraded my firmware for my DVDRW drive, which didn't help either.
I also used housecall web scanner which found loads of worms that it cleaned form my PC.... as my antivirus (ntlnetguard) has proved itslef to be total crud.
I've tried intervideo dvd creator which also restarted my system halfway thru transcoding.
Just to clarify... I have tried different video files (not the same one) all with the same results. Also, I use good quality media which i have used for quite some time now.
I was thinking that maybe something has got in my PC and is corrupting everything as I very often get a pop-up to tell me that windowsexplorer or nero or internet explorer (etc) has encountered a problem and needs to close.

I have been using PS/2 mouse for a long time. I threw my old PS/2 mouse because it was acting weird. The mouse icon would automatically move to the left side of the screen and stay there. Sometimes a jerk used to fix the problem. At other times I had to plug in the SERIAL mouse because the mouse stopped responding to the side scrolls. It would move up and down but not go sideways. So I thought it was a problem with the mouse and threw it away. I got a new PS/2 mouse and after like a month the old problem resurfaced. Now I think there is a problem with my PS/2 port. What can be the problems with the PS/2 port and how can I fix it?

Thank You.

Hi,  I am facing the problem of touchpad erractic behaviour the cursor keeps jumping around. The problem happened after I cleaned the touchpad with wet tissue. First I thought it was the moisture that maybe causing this issue however it has been 4 days now the problem continues. Over the threads I have seen that re-installing Synaptic Touchpad driver has resolved this issue for some people but it did not work for me. Any other suggestions?  How can i deassemble the touchpad only of the top cover in order to clean it? If there is any dirt that made into the frame of the touchpad. Thanks

A:Synaptic Touchpad erratic behaviour

Hello and welcome! Sorry for the wait.  Did you change out your battery lately with another one or have the original charger to your laptop? Those things can cause issues with the touchpad. I wouldn't recommend taking out the touchpad yourself, it is not very easy to do and plus you will have to take out a million screws to do it. I would take it a local repair shop or try out a USB mouse.

Hi, People,

Just joined in the hope someone has a solution to this. My wife has a Vista Home Premium laptop on which she runs Quickbooks 5 for our Church accounts. In the past when sending printouts of balance sheets etc. to other members by email she was only able to use text files. For correct layout and formatting, it had to be snail mail. But I realised (yesterday!) that by using the xps document writer the printouts could be transmitted as email attachments and retain their original layouts and format.

When attempting to print using the xps writer (which happily appears in the printer choice box) we get the error message " Could not print to printer. Check your printer selection. Printing may have been cancelled by another program".

I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling dot net 3.5 also the xps document writer itself to no avail. The xps writer works correctly with other programs for example Microsoft Word.

I thought it might be a problem with Quickbooks, so tried it with an installation on my XP laptop. I had to install dot net 3.5, but then it behaved perfectly, although if I cancel the save dialog I then get the error message which would appear to be particular to Intuit - the suppliers of Quickbooks. It does not appear if I cancel the save dialog in Word.

OK, for the occasions when the feature is needed I can transfer the files to my laptop and produce an xps document there. But not exactly satisfactory!

About the only difference in... Read more

No response so far alas. But it seems strange that the file will 'write' in XP but not in Vista. Does anyone know where the Vista xps writer driver loader is located? Maybe if I (temporarily!) remove those files, I can get Vista to use the files supplied in dot net 3.5 They obviously worked in XP so maybe..... Incidentally I now have a 'true' printer installed on my laptop, and the xps writer still works ok, so no conflict there.

I have done some extensive testing on my Windows 8.1 Tablet downloads speeds and its extremely slow. The download speeds vary greatly from second to second; it will achieve 50kb/sec then the next second jump to 30kb/sec then back to 40kb/sec and continue this erratic behaviour. *It also looses connection or experiences very slow speeds when you move more than 5 metres from the Wireless Router.

Is there anything others have done to improve/fix download speeds on their Windows 8.1 tablets? By inspecting the hardware specs below; could the cause be the hardware or is it a software issue? *See my note about how our previous tablet and laptop also experienced these issues but resolved them itself.

I recently purchased a Qosmio DX730 and the wireless mouse behaves erratically. It jumps about the screen and is just about manageable for basic use but practically useless for any detail work such as graphics manipulation. This isn't related to any particular program, happens with all software and windows desktop. Things I have tried but it doesn't solve the problem;
1. changed the batteries and resync'd
2. talked with toshiba helpline, uninstalled all drivers and reinstalled
3. searched for updated drivers (none)
4. tool wireless keyboard, mouse and transceiver back to shop and exchanged - still go the problem
The wireless keyboard works fine

I was wondering if I was getting some wireless interference but have turned off all other electric and electronic devices in the local area = no difference. I am reluctant to just give up and go to a plug in mouse because it is brand new. Any help appreciated.

A:Erratic mouse behaviour on Qosmio DX730

in the events of a faulty hardware it is always a good idea to see if the hardware behaves in the same erratic way on a different computer. so i would advise you to do this - if it's still erratic, theres nothing wrong with your software setup or hardware in your computer like the USB ports and most likely its a fault in the mouse itself

if its not erratic, we can get cracking on your problem =]

I have used Malwarebytes and OuptostPro Security suite and MS malicious removal tool to check my machine but nothing has been found. However when running Combofix the problems I experience are temporarily pacified then a day or two later the problems start to manifest themselves. The unusual behavior first began (that I noticed) after an unattended Windows update that forced a re-boot. From that point onwards I experienced the following misbehaviour of the PC;1.On shut down or request to enter sleep mode where as before my PC would wind down within less than a minute, now the process can take three or four or longer. More often than not Windows will announce that some service  continues to run in the background and presenting me with a choice to kill it but I can't because the (wireless) mouse cannot move. So the OS just hangs there at the same time fading out the desktop.2. When coming out of sleep the initial process is prompt. However once I've entered my password the action response of Windows can be; the screen contents comes up fast but there is a long delay - several minutes sometimes - before mouse activity is possible. BTW I notice that when this happens the mouse comes active shortly after the audio manager announces, on the task bar,  that speakers have been connected. It's as if device drivers are being held back. The other route the system may take (when coming out of sleep) is that all open applications appear as empty frames, black in the middle. Again... Windows Live Mail (one account)
Until recently all email messages received appeared in the inbox of the email account. However, recently some of my emails do not appear in my inbox even though I can see that emails are being downloaded. I have not set up any filters to block email messages and indeed some of the emails that "disappear" are from friends in my Contacts. One further quirk, the messages that do not appear in my inbox DO appear briefly in Quick Views but then they disappear immediately after they are viewed. Can anyone help me solve this problem?

A:[SOLVED] Windows Live Mail Erratic Behaviour

Taking into account these e-mails are from your contacts, are you sure the new e-mails are not being grouped with old e-mails from them? Try looking in a previous e-mail from them and see if a new one is there, a bit like 'conversation' mode. You can try this by getting a friend to e-mail you twice to see if you get two e-mails or they are group.

Also, try:
> Click on the View tab,
> Click on the Conversations button/drop down,
> Change the value to Off by clicking on off.

The WiFi of my ASUS Zenbook UX303 works only erratically. Touching it or slight movements may improve signal strength.

To explain, I need to tell the whole story.

In September, just 9 months after purchase, the mainboard broke. I had to send in the notebook and the German technical support center replaced the mainboard. Fortunately they did not wipe the hard drive.

When the notebook returned I noticed that the lid was not assembled 100% properly, it was off by just 1mm. A little ugly but I do need to get some work done and it did not appear to inhibit functionality. Two weeks later the right hinge started to break because of this error in assembly. I had to send in the notebook again. They fixed both hinges, replaced the screen bezel and wiped the hard disk.

When the notebook returned this time I noticed that they had heavily scratched the hinge cover. And here is the core of this story:

Also the WiFi did behave strangley, the connection was a lot worse than before and sometimes only worked when I lifted the notebook 2 inches up from my lap. The behaviour is erratical. Just touching the notebook might boost the signal strength from 1 to 4 bars.
My suspicion is/was that during the hinge assembly they had forgotten to reconnect the WLAN antenna which is mounted in the lid. Or maybe they failed to mount it properly.

I reported those errors and, yes, had to send it in again.
This time they replaced the lid cover but did not bother to fix the WLAN. They did not wipe t... Read more

I had installed a trial version of Nero and the install got stuck. I sued regseeker to rid myself of all entries that mtched the term NERO and found that there were several that were not deleteable at all (permissions were not allowed to be set too). apart from Nero i discovered two other entries that were not deletable (setgting permissions and taking ownership does not help). Furthere there is a slow boot time and erratic behaviour in general that makes me strongly suspect rootkits and other malware. I have scanned with my trial version of Bitdefender with an updated database and also used the July version of the malicious removal tool from MS.

Hi all
My father recently had a spyware problem with his laptop that I've tried my best to solve. Chrome seemed to be hijacked. On opening it, there was nothing but a white screen and no menus etc would load. A clean install of chrome resolved this.
More sinister was AVG failing to load since it was 'blocked by a group policy'. Malwarebytes uncovered some threats, but AVG stayed non-functional. I edited the registry to get AVG to start and ran a scan on that that uncovered some examples of JS/Exploit and removed. Both AVG and MWB say the system is clean and all seems functional, but I'm not 100% convinced.
Here are my logs...

A:AVG Blocked by Group Policy/Chrome erratic behaviour - still spyware?

Hi FranMar67
Your post is two days old. If you still need help-- download, run and post a FRST log and we will go from there and see whats going on.
Please download Farbar Recovery Scan Tool and save it to your Desktop.
Note: You need to run the version compatible with your system. If you are not sure which version applies to your system, download both of them and try to run them. Only one of them will run on your system, that will be the right version. Looks like you can get the 64 bit version.
Right-click FRST then click "Run as administrator" (XP users: click run after receipt of Windows Security Warning - Open File).
    When the tool opens
    click Yes to disclaimer.
    Press the Scan button.
When finished, it will produce a log called FRST.txt in the same directory the tool was run from.
Please copy and paste the log in your next reply.
The first time the tool is run it generates another log (Addition.txt - also located in the same directory the tool was run from). Please also paste that, along with the FRST.txt into your next reply.

Can anyone please help?
I bought my daughter & son-in-law a Packard Bell computer package which has win XP operating system. I had it posted to Germany as this is where they are based with the British Forces.
The problem is that the computer has erratic re-boots and we are at a loss as to the reason why.
We have looked into the 'event viewer' in 'My Computer' to see what errors are being reported and this is what it comes up with:
(Does this mean 'windows script host'?)
Can anyone advise us what the problem is and how we might fix it?
Many Thanks.

Hi guys, I bought this laptop as per description, I bought it refurbished since I wanted a cheap and light laptop to carry around. The laptop worked flawlessly for 8-9 month then suddenly it started to have problems. At the beginning it started to freeze when using it (screen freezes and that's it), I had to power it off with the power button and then restart it.After 2-3 months of this it started to refuse booting, sometimes it boot, sometimes it doesn't; all the LED are on (power and HD) but the screen is off, it doesn't even show the BIOS screen. The laptop boot about 30% of the times I try to start it, the other 70% nothing but the LED as described above, sometimes it freezes during use but again all of this is completely random, I have no idea why it happens. What I know is this:- I'm pretty sure it's not the LCD panel, I tried to connect an external monitor but it's the same erratic behavior all over again- I'm pretty sure it's not the HD since I tried with a new one, same story...- According to he LENOVO user manual it can be one of these two things (in order of probability): 1 RAM Failure - 2 Motherboard failure. Well, I hope it's the RAM of course (because it's 30 Euros and easy to change), if it's the MB I can pretty much kiss it goodbye because it would be cheaper to buy an other one than buying the MB.Now it has been working for two hours running Memtest86+ to test the RAM, I'm already at the second pass but it detected no errors: "Pass com... I recently found my Windows Explorer working erratically at random times. I would use Windows explorer and it would be fine normally unless I was spending lengthy amount of time with an open folder in Windows explorer and opening another WIndows for a different folder and copying, moving or saving new or current files from other folders and/or from new pdf files saved for example and it would usually start to act behave erratically which could occur after an hour or more when I would suddenly right click to save or perhaps move a file and then it would start highlight in grey or black that part the cursor right clicked and suddenly another, and then I might try closing it and when it re-opened the same behaviour would occur again. If I tried continuing doing so it would get to the point where the cursor for Windows explorer just goes round and round continuously or just freezes and won't close and I have to restart my computer.
I have scanned my laptop using my own security tools, Avast Premier and Malwarebytes Anti-malware, as well as the online security scanners Panda Cloud Cleaner and ESET online scanner. None of those found any issues. I then ran sfc /scannow and no integrity violations or issues showed up. I then also ran Windows Memory diagnostic test which showed not issues with my RAM.
I have attached two files showing examples of what happens, and would appreciate any help and advice on what I could do to fic the issue.

If this problem did indeed start recently have you tried doing a system restore to before the date it started ?  Depending on whether or not you have the 1703 Creators' update installed it is either 'Win key+X - Control panel - Recovery' or 'Win key - Settings - System - Control panel - Recovery'.
Once you get to 'Recovery' start the 'Restore' process but pick a date that is from before the start of your problem. You will get a warning that this is irreversible, just accept the warning and continue the restore and let it finish before you try to do anything else.

-clearing cmos
-removing battery/replacing battery
-plugging to the motherboard and gpu
-checking the sticks one by one on different slots

The psu, cpu, gpu and the monitor are fine because I checked if they worked on my old mobo so it seems like its the motherboard or ram. Any ideas on what else I can do before taking it to the repair shop (trying to avoid that due to covid).

I am not Even Sure if Its Freezing

There is a computer of a friend of mine. We took every single piece out and cleaned the dust on the pieces. After putting everything back together, it doesn't boot up properly. I see the bios screen than it asks me if where to boot, I choose HDD option. Then windows xp asks me what type of start up i want to go with. I chose normal, safe mode, safe mode with command prompt but whatever i chose didn't matter, it didn't started up.

When loading with safe mode option, it always freezes while loading amdagp.xxx file. When loading with normal mode option, i see gray bar at the bottom progressing and when it gets fully gray, there suppose to be a windows logo but instead i get a black screen.

I thought it might be the hard drive damaged and replaced it with another hdd of mine which also has xp professional on it. But it had the same problem. What are the possibilities? What can be wrong? Computer is HP Pavilion XT928.

Thank you

Hey guys, this is fairly long so bear with me...

Came back to my PC the other day, and it was turned off, when I had left it it was still on. To cut a long bit short, I discovered it was the fuse in the plug for the PSU power lead. So I replaced the fuse, turned on the mains, and BANG - PSU blew up (while it was still installed in PC).

Took it out, replaced with other PSU - started up PC and it would boot OK, and give me the single beep, but then would stay on a black screen and not proceed to the Windows splash screen.

So I tried booting into safe mode, this gave varied results - sometimes it would freeze when loading the various files at that black screen, other times it would actually let me log into Windows but then freeze straight away and I had to reboot.

So I booted from the windows cd-rom, and it would get as far as saying "Setup is loading Windows" or similar, then freeze.

Next, ordered another hd, removed old one - installed the new blank one, ran the Windows bootable cd, and this time it installed Windows fine. There I was thinking everything was now OK - not so. The PC was very unstable and kept crashing while installing new programs and using programs etc. I've gone back to it today, and now I am having the same problems as the previous hard drive. Windows won't load either way, and I can't even re-install from the Windows cd-rom as that freezes like before as well.

Basically all this leads me to believe it's gotta be something... Read more

I have a HP/Compaq nc6000 laptop that is a few years old running Windows XP. All service packs, etc are up to date.

Sometimes the laptop boots up normally and works fine and sometimes it doesn't. After pressing the power button, the power light comes on, the fan starts, (I think I hear) the hard drive spin and then it all stops. The power light goes to amber (charging) and then it turns off.

Typically when it boots properly, at the very beginning, the number lock, caps lock, and a third light all blink together, then turn off and it boots. When it's not going to boot, these lights don't even come on. (That's when I know it won't work.)

I've tried re-seating the memory. That worked twice but now I think it was just luck.

The first time I opened it, I also pulled a huge dust bunny from the fan. The rest of the insides were pretty clean and dust free. I blew everything out anyway.

Before this started happening, the machine was having some weirdness waking up after hibernating.

The problem happens sometimes after I shut it down properly and sometimes not. It's also booted up fine after a crash.

I've tried setting all the power controls to everything always on and leaving the computer on. But sometime in the middle of the night, it powers down. (I don't know whether this is a gentle power down or if it just shuts off instantly.)

The last time, it wouldn't start for a couple days and then I tried... Read more

When I turn my computer on Explorer.exe doesn't autorun. For some reason My Documents opens up with all the text of the files written in a blue font. I have to do the whole Ctrl+Alt+Del thing and run it manually.

Things I have already tried:
1. Made HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon > Shell: "explorer.exe" through regedit

2. Made HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon > Userinit: "C:\WINDOWS\system32\userinit.exe," through regedit [Made sure comma was there]. [see above screenshot]

3. Ran the script from http://www.dougknox.com/xp/scripts_d...ydocsopens.htm that is supposed to fix registry.

4. Ran CCleaner and fixed all registry problems.

5. Googled so much that I used up all their bandwith :[ j/k

I can not find any other information out there other than setting shell to explorer.exe which it has been the whole time. It was never c:\windows\config\lsass.exe or anything like that.

Someone said they fixed it by running msconfig, unchecking explorer.exe, restarting, then rechecking explorer.exe [at least thats how I read it.] When I run msconfig.exe I do not even see the words 'explorer.exe' to uncheck at all. If that is a way to actually fix this, could someone tell me where to uncheck? It's not under the startup tab or any tab for that matter.

A:My Documents boots, Explorer.exe doesn't.

Hi -

"Explorer.exe" is probably in thousands of registry keys in English, binary and hex form. Not knowing how Explorer got this way makes finding a fix all that more difficult. I have a feeling that you may have done additional damage with the registry cleaner(s). I will just say that you really never need to "clean" the registry unless instructed to do so. They are not errors that were "fixed", rather lost file associations that account for about 0.1% of the total registry keys.

If the registry cleaning was not to long ago, it is likely that you still have a system restore point on hand and can restore the system back to that time. I suggest that you do so. Then run the system file checker/ repair utility - SFC and see if it helps with Explorer.

START | type cmd.exe into the start search box | right-click on cmd.exe | select run as Administrator | the black command prompt ("DOS") screen will appear | type the following:

sfc /scannow
Upon completion re-boot to allow files in use to be repaired.

I am running windows xp home edition sp2. Then when I type in my user name and password, I am able to see my current background but nothing else loads up, and then I get a pop up saying that some .exe file has an error and thats all. I press ok and then all I get is my background with nothing loading up. I've waited 2 hours and still nothing loads, I put CDs, external hard drives, and pressed what ever you can think of, ex. alt+ctrl+delete, still nothing. Please help me, I will stay on the forums to answer any required questions you have. THANK YOU so much.

I'm kind of stuck here...

First what happened: last night my computer froze so I turned it off and then back on. However, when I did, the monitor just remained in standby as if the computer was not on. Everything on the computer seems to be working ok (fans going, lights on, etc). I also don't hear any beeps during the startup.

I've been browsing a lot of forums trying to figure out what is wrong, but I'm somewhat lost. I don't know that much about computers...
It seems some of these forums say the main culprits for a problem like this are the graphics card or the motherboard? Is this true?

Since every thread always has someone asking for specs - here they are:
Intel i7 940
Asus p6t intel x58 chipset sle/crossfirex mainboard triple-channel x
800w power supply
1 TB SATA II 3.0 gb 7200rpm HD
3 x 2GB DDR3 PC3 PC1333
1 x EVGA nvdia gtx 260 896mb pci-e
windows vista home premium

What I've done so far:
I have tried unplugging it and holding down the power button in the front for about 1 minute. 90% of the time this did nothing. One time it started to boot correctly with the monitor only to freeze during the windows load up bar and 1 other time it didn't even make it that far...
I have tried using another monitor on the computer. Same problem. I have also tried using my main monitor on another computer and it works fine.

I have been running this setup for almost 2 years, and nothing has been changed recently...

Daughter brought her HP DV9500 (Vista 32bit). Very suspicious of malware. If I check the BIOS, it does not see the hard drive (nor does that option appear in the boot menu). However, if you boot the machine, it will load Vista and allow you to log in. After about 10-30 seconds usage, the keyboard and mouse buttons freeze and what was on the screen still remains with that bloody awful circle going round and round. Now the mouse will still move across the screen via the touchpad or a usb mouse but the keyboard is dead as are the mouse buttons.I can boot parted magic on UBCD and access all the files on the C: drive (one physical, three partitions including a recovery partition - how it came from the factory) and run all day long. Disk diagnostics on UBCD show the hard drive is present and no errors. However, the bios diagnostic says replace the hard drive.I've rebuilt the BCD using Microsofts bootrec to no avail.I'm trying to get it sane enough to offload 4 years worth of pictures, music, and classwork, etc. and then I'll try restoring the OS from the recovery partition.I should mention that I ran an older Linux bootable version of Avira (dated Sept 2009) and it noted multiple occurrences of html/infected.webpage.gen as well as two other (going to try to recover the names from the Avira logfile). Thanks in advance.AJG

I'm trying to get it sane enough to offload 4 years worth of pictures, music, and classwork, etc.No need to bother trying to get Windows to work well enough: Simply retrieve copies of the files that you want, to a USB-connected external hard drive using a Linux operating system run from a bootable CD/DVD or USB flashdrive.f your computer is not able to boot into Windows or simply not able to access the internet, you can use a LIVE Linux operating system run from a bootable CD or flashdrive instead of Windows, to access the internet, to access files on the HDD(s) and do other tasks. Using a working computer:If you wish to use a LIVE CD ...
Download the Linux version of your choice (usually an .ISO image file).
There are many options to use for a LIVE CD. I suggest that you try one of the following:
Puppy Linux (smallest download file size at 128 MB)Linux Mint 12 Lisa (versions for a CD, and larger versions that need to be burned to a DVD disk)[*]Burn the .ISO image to CD: If you do not already have a suitable burning program for writing .ISO images to disc ...Download and install ImgBurn.Ensure that you UN-check the box agreeing to install the Ask toolbar during the installation.Place a new (blank) CD disc in the drive tray.Choose Write image file to disc.
