Safe Mode Problems

Q: Safe Mode Problems

I am also not able to reboot in safe mode. I tried the advice that you gave the other poster - went to run and typed in msconfig etc but there was no checkmark there. Then as I read further I realized my computer is not doing the same thing.

When I reboot in safe mode, the screen turns black and Safe Mode is in each of the four corners of the screen. Nothing else happens but when I push ctrl/alt/del the desktop flickers. It also flickers and I can see a bit of the desktop for just a moment when I click restart.

Any suggestions?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Reboot to the Boot Menu and select Safe Mode with command line. At the C:\ type in sfc /scannow. If it works post the results.

I have constant disconnect issue in normal mode. However no problems in safe mode. The only fix so far is to renew the IP address.
Just a few things I've done:
Cleared the cash and cookies of the browser;
Cleaned the registry with Glare and CCleaner;
Changed Power schemes to "Always on";
Used System Restore(in Safe mode);
Ran Dr. Web,Super AntiSpyware,TDSSKiller.
But everything was just a temporary fix.

First things first, I've had a serious issue ever since my computer was reset through recovery mode..the second Firefox loads in normal mode, it completely freezes up, and I'm not even able to end the process through task manager. I tried loading with Internet Explorer, still no luck. Safari same deal. I can only go on the Internet normally through Safe Mode. I have a Windows XP Professional, specifically a Media Center PC. Also, when I log in on windows, there is a "Found New Hardware" box for video controller. I also saw that there was a yellow exclamation near Video Controller and Video Controller (VGA compatible). Is it possible that my video card got corrupted, and is this an easy fix? Please help!

I ended up getting the AV Security Suite virus or trojan horse on my old work laptop and so I am writing this message using my PC. I was going through this forum's tutorial on removing the AV Security Suite here: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/virus-remo...-security-suiteI tried to enter the Safe Mode by pushing F8 on start up but nothing happened and so I took your advice and typed "msconfig" in the Run box and used the System Configuration Utility/BOOT.INI and did the /SAFEBOOT and then restarted. Well this worked great but my problem is that when I put in my usual password, it is incorrect. I have only had two passwords with this computer and neither of them are working. What do I do? The computer keeps opening in Safe Mode. As for the laptop, it is an old work computer that when the company closed down for good, they gave it to me for free. With that, I was not the Admin. How do I proceed? Do I need to create a floppy boot disk as noted here: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/tutorials/create-floppy-boot-disk-in-windows/The computer does not have a floppy drive.Fester

Hi Fester,Unfortunately we cannot help you getting around a password. See also the board rulesNo subject matter will be allowed whose purpose is to defeat existing copyright or security measures.I certainly see your problem, but the only thing I can suggest you, is contacting the company and obtaining the password or accessing your own non-administrator account.

I'm new here and in hopes of getting this resolved. I just installed the new Norton Systemworks 2005 and rebooted after installation. When the boot screen got up to the blue screen with the Windows XP logo before displaying the login names where you put in your password, it just stops. I restarted a few times and waiting a few more times thinking it may need to 'finish' installing. But each time gave the same results. Finally, I went in with 'Safe Mode' and got in with no problems. Tried again in normal mode after looking around for any obvious problems (none found)... back to square one. Tried again in 'Safe Mode with Networking' and it failed like normal mode so I suspected a networking problem??? The last thing I tried which made me mad is that I tried to uninstall Norton Systemworks in 'Safe Mode' and that failed!! Anyone in these forums know the cure? :dead:

A:Unable to get to login screen, works in Safe Mode but in Safe Mode w/ Networking

Just a thought

Safe-Mode
Start \ Run \ msconfig \ diagnostic startup
disable any services attached to your most recent install and restart
should get warning next boot about using msconfig, its ok
One key service that needs to be available is the installer service
Try the uninstall, if doesn't complete
Try the uninstall string in the registry only if you know what you are doing

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall

Under it you will see a list of installed programs. Some don?t show up as words but you can figure out what they are by looking at their values. What you are looking for is the uninstall string. Double click that key as if you were going to modify its value. Do a CTRL + C to copy and then exit the registry editor.

Go to START \ RUN and paste the uninstall sting and hit enter. This should launch the uninstall.

Just a thought though as I am not infront of a test system at the moment. You should research this a little further so you have a clear understanding of what you can and can't do with msconfig.

or simpler yet

Safe-Mode

Start \ Programs \ Access. \ System Tools \ System Restore

Select restore point prior to install of whats giving you the problem.

Again, Good Luck

PS If you try to install it again, turn of antivirus and other open programs etc..

Start in Safe Mode and look in C:\Windows\Minidump for crash log files with a dmp extension, like Mini071008-01.dmp. Zip 4-5 of the latest ones and post here as a ZIP or RAR attachment. The log file contains information useful to determine what caused the error, most likely hardware.

I'm about halfway in the process of removing some serious malware from my work laptop and have hit a brick wall.

I had to switch to Safe Mode to remove last remnants of dangerous critters/viruses Kapersky Labs AV software could not in Normal Mode.

Using Win XP, I went through MsConfg to manually change boot settings to Safe Mode. Restarted PC. Worked fine, HOWEVER, at the Log-In screen I am STUCK.

Although my usual user name appears in the top field as it always does, for some reason my existing password does not work when entered?? I've carefully typed it in over many times and checjed for correct spelling.

On another machine, I logged onto my work account remotely via the Web and my normal user name and password worked fine.

CAN anyone help me figure out how to either bypass the log-in, OR help me understand why this happened in the first place?? Is it possible the system admin. put a fail safe to not allow employees to boot up their PCs in safe mode??

Odd, the boot menu is usuall F12 or F10. You should be able to choose the hard drive, then start tapping F8 again to get the safe mode options.

you can also add a safe mode option to the boot menu that will display every time you boot the system. See this article for the steps:

Well, when I try to turn my computer on, it starts to load but then goes to a black screen saying some thing like:

Your computer encountered a problem...it may have been bacuse of...or power failures...hard drive...yadadadada

It also says to click Safe Mode, Start Windows Normally or Same Configuration with a little timer at the bottom

if I press enter for Start Normally or Same Config, it goes to a loading page and then shuts down and restarts going baack to the black screen. Restarting and Restarting and restarting...

If I click Safe Mode, a long list of jumble appears and it restarts back again. I mean, I thought that Safe Mode is the ultimate defense.

Hey guys, I just found this forum and I'd like to describe something that happened a few months ago.

I had just found out how to put my computer into the safe mode. I selected the option to start the computer in safe mode and rebooted the computer. However, as Windows began to load, I noticed something strange. A good portion of the screen was blocked with some static distrotion(I can't really describe what it looked like) and the parts of the desktop that were clear where extremely zoomed in and had great pixelation. I had to move my mouse blindly to where the taskbar appeared to be on the screen, and select System Restore to get out of the Safe Mode. So I can't really use Safe Mode on my computer. Has anyone else here have this happen to them?

Hi folks

My work laptop was infected with spyware/adware. I donwloaded some programs to help remove it. The instructions that I had was to restart the pc in safe mode and the run the programs.

I restarted the pc in safe mode via the msconfig prompt. However when the pc started up in safe mode and asked for my username and password it did not accept them? I checked typing etc and everything is fine. This leads me to believe that it is looking for the administrator username and password, is this correct?

I tried to re-boot the pc, but now it just keeps coming back up in safe mode!!

My question is is there anyway that I can override the safe mode option and just get the pc to boot up normally?

Any help greatly received as currently i have a useless laptop. Before anybody suggest asking my IT guy for the password, he is based in New Zealand and is fast asleep!

A:please somebody help.......problems with safe mode.

If you chose your personal account (which should be an option if it had Administrative rights), then it is asking for your personal password. If none was created, just try hitting enter.

If you choose the formal "Administrator" account, or that is the only one listed, then that password must be used. If none was ever created, you should be able to just hit enter.

Waking up the NewZealand guy is preferable to any alternatives here -- which would require much more extensive effort on your part.

My other computer has recently been found to have WinFixer on it. I was looking through the spyware self help forum and found a topic that deals with getting rid of WinFixer. I have followed all of the steps until it tells me to go to safe mode. I used the system configuration method of putting my computer in safe mode and when I rebooted the computer and tried to log in all it will show is a black screen with safe mode in all four corners and something about Windows XP on the top. A couple of seconds after this screen appears, a box pops up and asks if I want to continue in safe mode or if I want to do a system restore. This box only stays up for about a second, then it goes away and the black screen with safe mode in the corners is the only thing that stays on the screen.

If I click yes real fast on the box that pops up, the desktop almost shows up but then goes back to the safe mode screen, where the box pops up again. If I click no on the box then I can go through a process that will do a system restore. I can only log on and off and turn off the computer through the control-alt-delete task manager thing.

Another thing is that when the computer starts up and I go to the F8 start-up menu and select the normal option, it stills goes to safe mode.

What do I do? There seems to be no way to get out of safe mode and I dont want to do the system restore for fear of getting into another big mess of problems.

I've been following the tutorial to get rid of Winfixer and a couple of other unwanted programs, but the tutorial tells me that I have to reboot in safe mode. I reboot the computer, press F8, select "safe mode", and it takes me to the start-up screen, then to the place where you click on the profile that you want. I click on my own, and the screen goes black. It says "safe mode" in each bottom corner, and there's a long line of text at the top of the screen, and that's it. It doesn't move from there. Is there something (else) wrong with my computer, or am I doing something wrong?

A:Problems With Safe Mode

Here's another way to get into Safe Mode:
To use the System Configuration Utility method

Close all open programs.
Click Start, Run and type MSCONFIG in the box and click OK
The System Configuration Utility appears, On the BOOT.INI tab, Check the "/SAFEBOOT" option, and then click OK and Restart your computer when prompted.
The computer restarts in Safe mode.
Perform the troubleshooting steps for which you are using Safe Mode.
When you are finished with troubleshooting in Safe mode, open MSCONFIG again, on the BOOT.INI tab, uncheck "/SAFEBOOT" and click OK to restart your computer

My computer is infected with the thoroughly annoying virus associated with the bogus SpyFalcon anti-spyware program. I want to try some of the fixes I'm finding on the forums here, but they all involve using safe mode. When I boot up the computer and select safe mode, it runs off all those .sys files as normal, and displays "press esc to cancel loading a347.sys..." or something along such lines, then the same message for d347.sys (if memory serves), which i understand is normal, but after that it just seems to pause for a few seconds and then restarts as though i had hit the restart button or something.

Does anyone know of any ways around this other than a total format? I don't have the means of backing up my hard drive other than a lot of DVDs at the moment. I haven't tried an XP installation repair yet, 'cause I can't find the damn CD, but from what I see on a few different forums, that doesn't seem to work with similar problems.

If anyone knows a possible cause for this, and/or can help fix it, please e-mail me a suggestion. This virus has got to go, and fast. I don't wanna have to buy a new copy of XP just yet, just to get rid of it. Not to mention wasting all my DVDs and possibly losing some hard-to-find downloads and personal photos, etc.

A:Win.xp emachine starts and runs safe mode, safe mode with networking

hello and welcome to BleepingComputer,,

this is reminiscent of BIOS settings that need to be reset to default. you can do this by using that option in BIOS. do you see the option there?

if this pattern exists after BIOS reset, then there are other XP level options to try like console command /sfc scannow and chkdsk /r

not to long ago, i was dealing with a PC that was doing this same thing, and it was the hard drive (SATA) protocol setting in BIOS, it had to be set to IDE.

one more thing, this could be blue screen error that isn't halting, just looping boot. is there an option at the boot screen (the one with the safe mode options) about halting on errors?

Hello,

Recently my dad's computer had a corrupted hive and boot.ini. Via this website, I was instructed to run a chkdsk /r while in the recovery console. Everytime I used his OS disk to get into the recovery console, it prompted me for a password and I didn't know it (nor could I leave it blank). I decided to use my OS disk from my computer and I could fix the problem. Now, though, everytime I startup the computer, it prompts me to start windows normally, in safe mode, in safe mode with networking... To give further information...on that same screen there is an option for Windows XP and Windows XP Home Edition. Don't know if that has something to do with it. They both work though when I press enter on either one. Could anyone help me stop the computer from prompting me??? Thank you for any help.

I recently attempted to clean my brother's computer after he aquired a virus from the torrent file program he uses. Regardless, I cleaned a trojan and a backdoor from his system from safe mode. I can not boot in normal mode. Everytime i try the system gets hung up at the windows loading screen then the screen turns black and sits there. I have to hard reboot. I ahve used a repar CD and i have come across an error 0x800700b7, i have also recived this when i tried to work around this problem "identifier {9dea862c-5cdd-4e70-acc1-f32b344d4795}"

A:System will only start in Safe mode, Clean virus in safe mode

You can spend a lot of time trying to fix the boot problem and clean the virus from the computer, or you can nuke it and reinstall Windows. I wouldn't bother trying to fix it, personally - I'd back up what I could and then I'd install Windows again.

This morning we had a power outage and when I turned my computer back on, it would not boot. I tried several times to hard boot, with no luck. Then I tried safe mode. Ran an antivirus scan and it showed malware and several infections which it cleaned. The computer still would not boot normally. I then ran chkdsk, still would not boot normally. I have ran malware bytes, registry repair and the registry defrag program as well as done a disk clean up. It still will not boot in normal mode.
Since my last problems that you helped me with, I have upgraded to a broadband internet connection and have a home network. The 2 other computers on the network are fine.
A week ago, I had purchased Avast internet security and had problems immediately. It would not allow me to connect to the internet. That was uninstalled and I went back to the free Avast antivirus, Zone alarm and Spyware blaster. I was very unhappy with Avast customer service and support iYogi and decided I did not want Avast on my computer at all. I have since downloaded PC tools free antivirus. Once I have my computer operational again, I am open to suggestions.
Fortunately, I did not change anything on the other 2 computers. Just mine.
Running Windows XP 3 .
Thank you.

I wasn't really sure what forum to post this in, but this is my problem:

First of all, I run Windows Xp...I was moving some folders containing pictures, word documents, notepad documents, and a couple programs like some Spyware scanners and WinMx from the C: drive to the D: drive and meanwhile I found some files that could be removed.

I decided to scan and fix some of the noticeable problems with Spybot Search & Destroy, Hijack This, and CWShredder. To fix some of the problems I needed to reboot into Safe Mode, I did so, fixed it, and restarted to go back to Normal Mode. It kept rebooting into Safe Mode so I decided to use the System Restore and go to the last system checkpoint which was just the day before.

Once I was back in the Normal Mode, I went to my D: drive where all my folders were and only about half of them were there. Some of them appeared to have made it in my transferring them, but some didn't. I checked the C: drive and there were only two in it. There are approximately 3 folders missing and some programs like WinMx and CWShredder, Adaware and Hijack This went missing and I don't know where they are. I even used the search option in the popup menu and that yeilded no results.

Was this possibly an effect of the System Restore or what? Anything that you guys can possibly suggest would be great. These folders were important and I would be forever greatful if I could get them back...

A:possible problems from booting out of safe mode

I have two things you can try:
1)try logging on as an administrator to see if you can find the files.
2)try to unhide files and folders in folder options

Hello. I have been having some trouble since last night. My computer was infected with a virus or trojan, which linked to the Advanced Virus Remover website. I was running Avira AntiVir Personal at the time and there was no detection. My computer immediately went to a blue screen of death, and when i rebooted my wallpaper was replaced with a warning about how my computer was infected. I went searching online for answers, and I noticed that my Firefox browser had been hijacked as well, redirecting me to spam sites. I ran Spybot as well as my Avira scan, which found some issues, but corrected them. Then I downloaded. SuperAntiSpyware and scanned and corrected problems. Then Malwarebytes Antimalware and did the same. I also downloaded PCTools antivirus and scanned and corrected. I was going to run SmitFraud Fix in safe mode, but it seems I cannot get my computer to do it. I know the whole F8 drill and it tries to load but goes to a BSOD which states:

0x000000007B (0xF8A8E528, 0xC0000034, 0x00000000, 0x00000000)

I have also received the BSOD when in windows which states:

Driver_IrqL_Not_Less_Or_Equal

Please let me know what I can do this is very frustrating.

Nick

Your BSOD issues are likely caused by the infection, so I am moving this topic to the Am I Infected forum.

So I accidently booted into safe mode with the registry repair option selected and now when it boots it is a blank screen with the power button on bottom right and the compatibility options for on screen keyboards and stuff on the bottom left. I can't figure out a way to either boot in normal mode, or the default safe mode. To get into safe mode I hit the windows key and r and opened a program and went to the boot tab and changed the setting to boot in safe mode and restarted my computer. I need help rebooting in a different mode.

A:Windows 8 safe mode problems

I'm running Windows 8.1 but things are basically the same under the bonnet. If you enter msconfig in the search box and open it that gives you access to System Configuration. Click on the Boot Tab and uncheck the box for Safe Boot. Select Apply and then restart the computer.

Easier maybe to start from when you press the windows key and r. Enter msconfig in the box and work from there.

Good afternoon,

This is my first post so hopefully I can provide you with all the information that you need. Also, thanks in advance!

I can't delete files off my desktop, it says "Error Deleting file or folder, the directory is not empty" So I viewed some suggestions here recommending running some scans in safe mode.

When I try to start with Safe mode, it gets to a point then a blue screen appears with an error message and some numbers / letters below it.

I will try and get back to anyone ASAP but sometimes I am away for a bit, so thanks for understanding

Hi,

On the other household computer, Its got Windows XP Home Edition, Once a month I like to run Anti-Virus and Spyware Scan's in safe mode.

(I do run them once a week in normal mode)

Anyway.......

When it comes to the login welcome page, Its got Administrator and the other user name, for the administrator its asks for a password, because its home edition the administrator is hidden in normal mode so, I have never loged in to an administrator account, so i have no idea what the password is.

and my other one, I would like to change the screen resolution but it will not let me, i can move the bar accross to select which resolution but when i click apply it doesnt do anything.

Thanks,

Jay.

i had some bugs i couldn't delete in normal mode, so im like oh kay, easy, go in safe and delete the suckers.
i restart my computer and f8, and try to go into safe mode, said something about your computer was shut down incorrectly or power lost and some files are missing now.

so im like, ummmmmmmmmmm... how do i get round this. so, i restarted my computer and put it in to the (Last Known Good Configuration), i know, i went to Run>msconfig>Boot.ini>tick /SAFEBOOT and restart my computer, not knowing this was one of the biggest mistakes i've ever done. it starts and it runs a little big and boooom!!! blue screen pops up and this is what it says,

"a problem has been detected and windows has been shut down to prevent damange to your computer.

if this is the first time you've seen this stop error screen, restart your computer. If this screen again, follow these steps:

Check to make sure any hardware or software is properly installed. If this is a new installation, ask your hardware or software manufacturer for any windows updates you might need.

If problems continue, disable or remove any newly installed hardware of software. Disable BIOS memory options such as cachinging or shadowing. If you need to use Safe Mode to remove or disable components, restart your computer, press F8 to select advanced started up options, and then select Safe Mode.

Hi there everyone!
So, I have a combination of problems at the moment: I got the BSOD, and my USB connection, or something involving it, is not working.

I'll start with the USB, because I'm pretty sure if I can get it working, I can get all my important data off the comp and just reformat it, thus solving the BSOD.

So, this was a problem before the BSOD but I just sort of ignored it because it was never a big deal... when I plug something into the USB ports (ie, external harddrive in this situation), it registers down by the clock on the bottom right... says it has found new hardware, etc. But it won't show up under My Computer, so I can't access it. At the moment I am currently stuck in Safe Mode, due to the BSOD and I was wondering if there was anyway to get it to work. I've gone into the Device Manager > properties and it says everything is in working order (including the device that I'm trying to use). I've uninstalled and rolled back the drivers, and when it gets plugged in again, it id's the item and adds them agan, but it still won't show up under My computer...how do I access it?!?!

Secondly, BSOD: IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL
Stop 0x0000000A (0xFF1501F0, 0X00000002, 0X00000000, 0X804D9B64)

I've tried system restore to the last saved point, I've tried starting with the last successful settings... I'm wondering what else I can do?

Basically, if I can get the USB problem solved, I can get the important documents off and then the BSOD will no longer be ... Read more

Hi Silverboarder25 -

Welcome to the Tech Support Forum - XP Support!

There should be memory dump files left behind by each BSOD. If you can get them and send them to me, I'll take a look to see if a more definitive cause can be determined for your system crashes. I've learned never to take anything granted when a BSOD is involved. You never know!

The memory dump files should be located in c:\windows\minidump\ - the dump files will be named similar to "Mini033008-01.dmp". Get them all - regardless of the number.

I will also need a Belarc Advisor report saved in "mht" format (after running Belarc it will bring the report up in an Internet Explorer screen - go to the top right of the IE screen; Page; Saved as; save as mht). You can download Belarc HERE.

Then zip up the memory dump files and the Belarc report and send them to me via the email address that I have provided to you in my PM.

Please be patient as I have dozens of other memory dumps to process. Should you have any questions regarding the aforementioned, please POST again or send me a PM.

Regards. . .
