Display settings are stuck! Win2000Pro

Q: Display settings are stuck! Win2000Pro

A downloaded screen saver was installed on this computer and then uninstalled and now the display is horrendous. It is stuck on 16 colors and 640x480. Kinda like it is in safe mode but it is not. I don't know how to get the driver back or where it even is. Can this be fixed without the 2000 CD because I can't find that either!?! Any help would be appreciated.

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

This morning our lovely cleaners came in and cleaned our pcs as they regularly do in our company.

After they were done, I tried starting pc and all was hunky dory until Win200Pro hit the starting Windows loading screen (you know the one with the logo and blue squares loader at the bottom). It stays there for ages, never loading Windows.

So far I've tried:

Recovery console
Repair Windows
fixmbr
fixboot

Windows Setup (selecting the Repair option in there)

changed mouse and keyboard just in case

all the abovementioned solutions failed.

Not sure if anyone has any ideas. It would be very much appreciated.

I'm trying to avoid having to format and reinstall as some setup data for the company's software will be lost.
As far as i know no software or hardware have been recently installed on that pc and the person using it doesn't really surf on the internet.

please heeyaalp!!
thank you very much in advance!

I have a 433mz Celeron with 128mb RAM running Win98SE. I cannot get the display settings to give me anything better than 16 colors (the other option is 2 colors!!) and a 640x480 screen size. I ran a Belarc and have a Standard PCI Graphics Adapter (VGA) and a Sylvania F96 monitor. I've downloaded the latest drivers for each -- the graphics adapter is from Microsoft from 4-23-99 and the monitor driver is from Sylvania from 1-14-02.

I've also tried removing the display adapter and monitor and reinstalling them completely.

Help!?!

A:[SOLVED] Display Settings Stuck at 16

the standard pci graphics adapter only allows 16 colors.

we need to get your video drivers reinstalled.

what make and model video card do you have?

if you have onboard video, we will need either the make/model of your computer or the model number from your motherboard to find the correct video drivers for you.

if you have an actual video card, pull it out and look at it and tell us the make./model and we will find the drivers for you.

All other functions sound etc. are running fine

Hello! I found this forum and really hope someone might be able to help me!

I have an old Packard Bell iMedia PC running Windows XP Media Centre edition. About a year ago I started having display problems, the monitor would go black suddenly and then switch back on. This started happening more and more frequently until I was forced to login in safemode, grab all my vital files, and then reinstall windows. This didn't help. After reinstalling the computer developed a new problem, it would start up with the display set to 4bit at 640 resolution and nothing I could do would change that. At this point a friend kindly gave me his old (legal) copy of WIndows XP Professional SP3 as he was migrating to Windows 7 and I used that to repartition my hard drive and reinstall windows. After the install I found my computer worked perfectly again (registration completed successfully), until I restarted it - it got stuck at absolute minimum resolution again.

I have since replaced the harddrive with a Seagate 500gb, once again it worked perfectly until I restarted it where it got stuck at minimum again. I went into the display settings menu and used the troubleshooter, it told me to open the advanced menu and click on monitor tab, but I couldn't access Preferences.

Can anyone help? My computer looks like it's stuck in safemode, though it isn't!

I go this XPS13 in US and brought it here to Dubai. There was this issue ON and OFF, where the display would become 1 inch tall and screen width or three inches / 1 inch etc. Random. After pressing the power button some 15 times, switching the device on and off and on...if I am lucky the device comes up.
Is there a solution for this. I faced the issue last week; and 30 minutes ago. Now it is fine. Not sure when this will fail. I would like to know if there is a solution for this. Been two years. Issue on and off. Can older version of Windows help? I have no trust in updates from DELL. Been updating my device all the time. So is there a solution related to Windows?

Hello everyone, As described in the title, I have an issue with my Yoga 720 15" with the GTX1050 and external monitors. The external display disconnects whenever I launch a game in fullscreen mode or when I change and apply display settings in Windows 10 (for example when I change from extend to pc screen only and then back to extend). Basically whenever the screen has to turn black and reload new graphical settings. The only solution then is to replug the HDMI cable on the monitor.  I have tested this with multiple monitors and TVs as well as different types of connections such as usb-c to HDMI cables and usb-c hubs with integrated HDMI ports. Graphics drivers are all up to date.  Can anyone help me out here?

this is a strange one to me...

the hdwe is a hp "minitower" athlon processor, embedded nvidia vid, fairly fast and responsive on a good day.
I worked on this system a year ago, obsessively, setting up Vista as well as is possible - lean/clean/stable.
recently the primary user account, upon logging in, gets a "noise" display on the monitor that looks like an inability to sync.
I shall not rule out the possibility that an "extortion-ware" malware is causing this but extensive checks don't show any malicious thingies. There is a lightly used, tech-support second user account that logs in fine.
I set the display properties on the troubled account, the display looked normal again, but after a couple of days of use, the bad display issue is back.

is this a known issue? video refresh rate anomaly ??? why would it be "fine" for a year, then suddenly develop the problem? debug steps?

I worked on it 2 weeks ago and it was fine when I finished, now in the ditch again so I'm fishing for new debug steps to try and determine what exactly causes it to go non-linear...

thanks for your suggestions

Hello all: When I clean installed Win2kpro I chose the option of only one user would be using this computer. Install went well and has been no problem for months untill I tried to add a new Hard Drive. It's a 200G Seagate SATA Baricuta. The motherboard is about 18 months old and the American Megatrends BIOS chip was dated Feb 17-2006. It detected and reported the new drive as 200G in the bootup. My problem: I can't get Disk Management to Partition the new drive. It's greyed out.
Now since I chose "Only one user" during install of Win2kp and SP4, how do I get logged in as Administrator since I THINK that is why "Partition new drive" is greyed out. There is no Login choice when using the START button.
Consider me as a beginner in all of Win2kp security.. work groups and Adminstration function etc. All I would like to do is get this Win200Pro to partition my new drive into two 100G parts. By the way I saw the drive reported as 137G total in Disk Management rather then 200G. Kinda long note but I tried to give this info as help. Thanks agpilot

Hi,

I need a batch or similar type file that will "detect display" from (Control Panel\All Control Panel Items\Display\Screen Resolution).

HP dv6 use switchable graphics and they can be seriouly problematic to update. Anyway the only way i can use the latest driver is if i put up with aero not starting properly sometimes. I found out it's becasue the laptop is randomly deciding to switch to display 2 - when it should be 1. No display settings in that section will change when its in that state until "detect" is used.

Then i run a batch i have that restarts aero and it goes back to normal.
"net stop uxsms
net start uxsms"

Basically i want a batch(s) to detect displays and restart aero on startup. Im on windows 7.

I have a friend who is still using win2000pro SP4 and it has been updated with the final RollUp1. The friend uses Firefox and Thunderbird so there should be no problems there.

How safe is it to keep running that? This latest spate of .DLL and .EXE highjacking should not be an issue as win200 does not use WebDAV as far as I can tell.

Would love to hear some thoughts on this.

A:My Win2000Pro PC Rebooting

A simple test is to start the computer in safe mode. If the rebooting continues, it points at a hardware or overheating problem. If it does not reboot in safe mode, it is a software / driver problem.

This will point you in the right direction in troubleshooting your problem.

I am running Windows 2000 Pro and it was working just fine yesterday. This morning I go to turn it on and it's stuck on the loading your personal settings screen. It acts like it's about to load and than it restarts and does the same thing over and over. I did read somewhere that it probably has to do with a corrupted file in my settings...but since I'm the only one who uses the computer I don't have it set up to have more than one account setting. I can't even go into safe mode..the same thing happens. I did try to go to last known good configuration and that didn't do anything. It there a way I can log on without loading my personal settings? I can't think of anything I did yesterday that would cause this problem except that I ran a spyware scan with SpyBot and it deleted a few bad things. I also don't have a Windows boot CD since my computer was built by someone and he didn't give me the CD.

Sigh...very frustrating..

I have a dual language set-up going on my laptop of English as the primary and Korean as an option. For some reason, my computer shut down on its own for whatever reason, then upon start-up and log-in, the language settings were automatically changed to Korean. Unfortunately, I'm not fluent in it, so I don't know how to go about changing it back to English.
On a side-note, after this happened, there was an indication of an update on my Shut Down button, which I clicked and updated. During the update installation process, on the bottom of the screen was the usual Windows 7 logo, but had a Red-Orange "K" after it. Dunno what that was (gonna take a wild guess and say "Korean"?), but it went away..

Anyway, main problem is the language setting, which, for the record, happens often with Windows, in my experience. Anyone able to assist?

A:Trouble with language settings. STUCK!

Scratch that. I got it. Went to the Start Menu, searched "Regional and Language Settings" and hit Enter so I wouldn't have to navigate aimlessly and changed it back. Dunno why the f*** it was changed in the first place though..!

Hello all, one of my XP computers was infected with the FBI Moneypack virus. I booted into safe mode and ran a few scans with Malwarebytes and Bitdefender 2012 and both found nothing. I deleted the main profile and created a new user account. When I try to boot normally it takes a good 5-6 minutes at the "Widnows is loading" screen. Then I finally see the user account and when I click on the account and enter the password it just stays stuck at loading your personal settings. I can boot into safe mode with networking and load up the account just fine, however every time I do I noticed in Documents and Settings it creates a new profile folder which looks something like Username.Computername.000, and keeps adding a number every time I login. Not sure where I can go from here. Thanks in advance for any help.

Welcome to Seven Forums Nurein615. I think you can adjust it in BIOS with the down right keys (I hope they work!). Here is a (poorly made ) video that will illustrate how. Basically, F2 at boot, then video settings, then brightness. Don't go too bright as you have no left key to turn it back down! Good luck!

Hi, everybody.
Small problem. WIN2000 closes down normally, except when it has gone through a "sleep/wake-up" routine. After this, shutdown goes ahead as normal, saving settings, etc. then goes to the normal "blue screen", after which, instead of shutting down after ~10 seconds, it just freezes and requires a reset reboot , and will then shut down normally.

Probably not too serious, but is a nuisance when I'm trying to tear myself away, and then having to spend another 2-3 minutes shutting the thing down.

Ideas, anyone?

I can't seem to get Win2000 Serv Pak 4 or other "critical" updates identified via the microsoft.com page recommendations to install.

When I try follow the microsoft procedure (scan for updates, select, click "install" nothing happens: no status messages, nothing to indicate any updates are being installed, etc)

If I go to the download page and try to select only Serv Pak 4 (for example), it says it is downloading but in 1 sec it claims to have downloaded 589k. No way. Especially on my dial up. If I then try to launch the desktob "icon" it says it is checking my config, then the status bar and dialog box disappears almost immediately. Again, no action.

System is basically a "new" install as I re-installed win2000pro yesterday by booting from the floppies, ran set up to override all Win2000 files, downloaded serv pak1 (and ran w/o problem), downloaded IE 6 w/sp1. I doubt any virus as I have not installed anything else except the drivers for soundblaster, monitor and modem - all direct from manufacturers disks.

I did some investigating and note under task manager that the CPU is running full bore 100% with kernels running somewhere near 80%. Under processes, where I would normally see the System Idle Process running at 95+%, it is now running at 5+%, with the explorer.exe process eating up a whopping 95-99% of the CPU. I recently upgraded a print server from W98 to Win200Pro, now other Win98 users are having problems accessing the computer, it is now requiring a password:
\\Servername\IPC$

The network is peer to peer. Other Win2000/XP computers can access alright.
Does any one have any ideas??

A:Win2000Pro network password

W98 and W2000 access shares differently: W98 sends plain
text passwords, W2000 sends encrypted ones.

Make life easier in this way:
On each computer on the network, add a user account for every (W98)-user that needs access to the shared resources. If you use the same username and password on each computer on the network, users wont have to log on to each machine individually.

At a command prompt, type LUSRMGR.MSC +enter
Right-click Users and choose New User
Enter a username and password (or leave password blank)
and enter any other info you like.
Clear "User must change password at next logon"
Select "User cannot change PW" and "PW never expires"

I inherited an IBM Aptiva 2174-595 Athalon 600 computer.
It came and worked well with win 98SE. Winxp pro was installed and didn't work well.
I initiallized the hard drive and installed Win2000Pro and service pack 2. It continually freezes shortly after boot up. I upgraded to the new bios - no better. I took out the cards - modem, video,- no better.
I reinstalled win 98 SE and it seems to work fine. I'd love to put win 2000 pro on ALL my computers. How do I make it work on this one?

Hi,
I made a clean install of win2000pro. After that I updated it from windows update as much I could. Now my C drive is over 1 gb large. Does it really take so much space? Is there anything I can remove manually, e.g. temp install files? I'm using Norton Ghost, so in case of problems I can always reinstall my C. Tnx in advance

Hello,

Newbe here.  I was wondering if anyone can help me with resetting my Dell XPS (2005) with Windows XP OS?

I am reinstalling the OS manually with the CD that came with the computor.  I followed the instructions for a manual restart and added the first disc Dell XP OS all was going well when a window poped up.  It says "the file 'ha20x2k.sys' on Creative Installer CD-Rom is needed."  "type in the path where the file is located and click ok."  Well I am assuming they mean the Creative Sound Blaster X-fi cd and I put it in and nothing happens.  Also the arrow/cursor doesn't move nor can I type anything in, what I am doing wrong?  The window also doesn't let me see if time is elapsing on the installation of the first CD.

HELP!

Thanks
