Dell XPS 13 & Inspiron 13 Touchpad - cursor jumps to different location when clicking touchpad button

Q: Dell XPS 13 & Inspiron 13 Touchpad - cursor jumps to different location when clicking touchpad button

I have purchase multiple xps 13 and inspiron 13 laptops and observe the same issues. I tend to use the touch pad with my right hand's index finger, and click the touchpad button with my left hand's index finger. It's a quick way to get things done. Many in my organization do this, too and have been running into problems.
However, quite frequently (but not all the time) when I click the button with my left hand the cursor jumps to another location on the screen. Frequently this is the lower-left corner of the screen, but sometimes it is the upper right, too. This causes different windows to come into focus, or it activates the start menu. Really , really annoying, and it happens on both laptop models. Our previous Lenovo Yoga 2 Pro and Acer laptops did not have this issue.
I think this has to do with the touch pad thinking that the user has two fingers on the touch pad and moves the cursor thinking the finger jumped around the pad. Otherwise the gestures and movement of the touchpad is fine.
Is this a known issue to Dell? It's really aggravating and other users in my organization are complaining as well. I may need to return the lot (3 XPS 13, 5 Inspiron 13 machines ) and look at different hardware.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

This is a last ditch effort to attempt to figure out what's wrong. I've been having to use a mouse the past few days on my Dell Inspiron 3537 because of it's sudden, odd touchpad problem. Now, this laptop is at least three years old, and it'll probably be high time to get a new one eventually, but I would rather like to see if this is a small issue I could get fixed and maybe get a few more months or another year out of it.
Essentially, on Saturday, my laptops' touchpad began to go on the fritz. It began to highlight, click, and drag objects while I was only moving the cursor across the screen. I was baffled and I proceeded to see if my drivers needed to be updated. Nope, according to the Dell website, my drivers for my touchpad were up to date. I looked into the touchpad properties, got no results from that, and eventually I decided to see if going back on a touchpad driver update might help. That didn't fix anything and actually removed the entire driver from my system, so I ended up re-downloading the touchpad driver. That didn't help either. Every time I thought I had maybe fixed it, it went right back to highlighting and clicking without my input. At that point, I gave up and disabled the touchpad and grabbed my mouse, which I've been using ever since.
My only other thought is that my touchpad has a dead spot, and/or this issue is just age and it's time to start backing up files and looking for a new one. Any help out there for me?

While scrolling on the touchpad on my Lenovo G50-70, the cursor will regularly jump to the side and start moving back and forth across the screen.  This has been happening since I first bought the computer several months ago but has gotten progressively worse and happens nearly all the time while scrolling.  It occasionally happens while I am not scrolling as well.  I contacted Lenovo and the contact tried to correct the problem (though he did not explain what he was doing).  He told me that to do any more work I would need to purchase a maintenance plan.  However, this has been a problem since the day I bought the computer so it is clearly a defect.  Any advice on how to fix this problem?

Check your operating system's mouse pointer settings in Control Panel and try lowering the speed under the Pointer Options tab. When set too fast, the mouse may jump all over the desktop at the slightest touch. How to instructions with screenshots here.If you have a wireless mouse, low batteries can result in weak, mixed or no signals that can affect its functionality so start by replacing them. If you are using a ball mouse, remove it and clean the rollers as dirt and gunk will cause erratic behavior. If its an optical mouse, "jumpiness" and "jerky" movements can result if using it on a glossy surface or reflective mouse pad. In some cases using multiple or uneven mouse pads can produce the same results. As a test, try placing it on a piece of newspaper or rubberized pad to see if that resolves the problem. If that does not help, confirm that the mouse works on another machine. It is possible the mouse could be defective or has gone bad. My single-surface touchpad is exasperating and I would never buy this model if I knew... Much of the time, a right-click behaves simply as a left click. For instance, a multiple hits Google search page disappears and becomes simply the one selection I'd intended to "open in new tab" from the customary drop-open submenu, which fails to appear upon right-clicking a hit.
Also, right-clicking a highlighted block of text often simply removes the highlighting instead of providing a drop-open submenu for "copy" or "cut" or the like.
I'm trying to get in the habit of substituting two-finger taps for right clicks, but that choice is unreliable and fails rather often.
Dell ought to be all over this, but improved drivers haven't been offered.  Short of resigning myself to using an external mouse on a table top (not exactly why we wanted a laptop with touchpad in the first place), is there anything I can do to improve this temperamental touchpad's performance?  I've done my best with settings; nothing corrects the performance problem described here.

I bought a 4k touchscreen Dell xps 15 9560 this April. About 4 days ago the manual click for the right and left buttons for the touchpad got harder to use (I had to press harder than I would then it will result to working normally). Two days later, the manual clicking stopped working completely.
I can still tap to click, use the touchscreen feature and I think I am still able to use a mouse but this is a new and expensive laptop, It should be able to do the basic things. Plus, I prefer actually clicking than tapping!

Anyone know how to solve this issue?

I have a Dell Latitude D630 laptop that has issues. Sometimes the touchpad works, and sometimes it doesn't. I've noticed when it doesn't work, the icon in the tray has disappeared or never booted up to begin with. Sometimes it boots up and sometimes it just doesn't even boot up to the tray at all. And at other times, it does.
(Along with this, maybe it's just a coincidence, but I've been working on this for days and days but when the touchpad doesn't work, the keyboard acts up too!) This might have nothing to do with it at all.

I've done a complete reformat of the hard drive, installed Win XP Professional, reinstalled drivers over and over. Been to the Dell website and have all the newest drivers.
When I reinstall the touchpad drivers, it does work once again, but this seems to be short lived.
The laptop is 4 years old...seems strong otherwise, can handle multiple tasks fairly well, has a dual core installed.
I can't figure it out.
Can anyone help?

Thank you!!

I have an Inspiron 1525, and I recently updated to Windows 7 x64 from Vista. Obviously I have to update the drivers, and I am having trouble getting the trackpad to work. Well... it works, but I dont have editable settings for it. I want to disable the touch to click feature, but my mouse settings do now have a "Dell Trackpad" option. Where is the driver to download this option? Or is there some other way I am missing?

Hey guys so quick background. A few months ago while watching netflix I experienced a minor 'lag' or 'freeze' and when my Dell Laptop recovered about 2 seconds later the cursor was moving around erratically on the screen. I haven't had much time to try and sort this out, and for a while didn't bother me because I was able to use the FN (function button) to disable it and use my wireless mouse but now I'm getting ready to leave town, and the issue has gotten worse.

Now I can no longer use the FN button to disable the touchpad, and the whenever I plug un the wireless fob for the wireless mouse, I get a prompt popping up that Windows recognized that the device has failed. Tried it with two different mice.

I'm pretty irritated since as a photographer, when I travel out of town my laptop is one of my most important tools. Now that I'm heading to Indiana, the dang thing has decided to puke out all of these issues at once. I've NEVER abused this laptop and I'm very careful about how I treat it so I'm rather confused where this issue has come from.

The erratic movement is so annoying now that i can't hardly click on anything. I can't pull up the control panel or device manager because the cursor is bouncing all over the screen.

Any suggestions would be awesome. I'm currently running system restore.

Hello, I have a brand new Dell Inspiron 5558 with Windows 8.1 64b installed. I can't use touchpad gestures, no scroll, no pinch to zoom, etc. I have installed the latest drivers from here but after install (which says it is succesfull) nothing is showing up in my taskbar or control panel or program files.

A:Dell Touchpad gestures not working on Dell Inspiron 5558

I found the fix here. Install Synaptics 19.15.2 Windows 10 64 Bit  even tough you have Windows 8.1.
Install like this:
1) Extract the files to another folder
2) Open the folder with extracted files copy the path of the x64 drivers
3) Go to Control Panel>Device Manager>Mice and other pointing devices
4) Right click mice and other pointing devices, select Update Driver>From Hard-Disk
5) Add the x64 drivers path
6) Select Dell Touchpad
7)  Install drivers
8) Restart

I have the brand new Dell XPS 13 9350 with Windows 10. When I use the touchpad with two fingers to scroll down on websites the content "jumps" back up some lines. This happens when lifting the fingers from the touchpad.
It occurs in Chrome and Edge and is pretty annoying because I'm losing focus on the page I'm reading everytime I use two finger scrolling.
Any idea how this can be fixed? I found no driver for touchpad on Dells support page for the XPS 13 and I'm not sure if I should use Synaptic drivers ...
Thanks in advanceFrank

If i start scrolling up or down with two fingers it needs 1-2 seconds of scrolling before it starts scrolling on the screen. This is VERY annoying!
I mean the scrolling on my 7 year old Sony Vaio was better than this....
How to fix it?! The problem appears in every program

It worked fine on Windows 7, but simply stopped working when i formatted my hard drive and installed Windows 8.1 32-bit edition.
The touchpad didn't even work during Windows 8.1 installation (I used bootable USB to install Windows 8.1) After the install, I downloaded and installed every single driver that there is on Dell Support website They all installed and worked perfectly without errors. Even the Synaptics Touchpad driver was installed without any error but the touchpad simply doesn't work.
In the device manager, under input devices, there is only USB mouse listed. That too disappears if  I unplug the mouse from USB. Under "Other Devices" there are 4 unknown devices. I tried installing them by right clicking>update driver>search online but it fails. I even tried that hardware troubleshoot option which tries to find drivers online and install but that too failed.
So i ran the startup Dell Diagnostics, and the touchpad worked fine in the diagnostic screen. But soon as windows boots, it stops respoding like it doesn't even exist.
I also tried 'clean boot' (Disabling all non-microsoft services and startup programs, i even tried disabling microsoft services too!) but i didn't work.
So at last, i formatted the hard drive and again and installed same windows again, this time as a clean install. But then again, the touchpad didn't work.

So apparently i have already tried every option i could find on the internet and my touchpad s... Read more

Hi All,
A friend I work with asked me to check out this laptop that belongs to her daughter. She said the touchpad wasn't functioning properly, previously her older daughter had been using this laptop. This laptop is currently running windows 7 home premium 64-bit, w/service pack 1 edition. The older daughter has one user account setup on this machine..she is listed as the administrator. The second daughter has her own account and is listed as a standard account. The first thing I did upon checking out the the issue with this machine is update the Synaptics Touchpad software to the latest version available for this machine (V7.2). What is really strange to me is the fact that the touchpad seems to function correctly on the administrator account, but when I switch to the other user account (standard user) it doesn't function correctly like it does on the administrator account. To be honest..I changed the standard user account to a administrator account temporarily so I could at least have access to run some test on the system..( namely, sfc /scannow ). After doing so I was informed no problems were found, I can plug in a usb mouse to a usb port on the machine and it seems to function correctly. I'm at the point now I don't know what to do as I've never ran into this issue before. That's why I thought I'd see if anyone else has had this issue before.

OK so I have tried deleting the touchpad in device manager and removing the driver, and reinstalling the device from scratch. When this didn't work I thought there must be a problem with the touchpad itself and so bought a new one and installed it. Problem is it still doesn't work.
If I go into device manager and look for it I have to show hidden devices and then it comes up with the yellow triangle next to it.
I show properties on it and it says its the Dell Touchpad, Manufacturer is Alps Electronics, and its plugged into the PS/2 mouse port.
In the Device Status box it says:
This device is not present, is not working properly, or does not have all its drivers installed. (Code 24)
The Driver date is 02/05/2010 and the version is 7.1107.115.102
I have also noticed that on the details tab under power data the current power state is D3, which I believe is off.
Something else I have noticed which may or may not be related is that the laptop doesn't enter sleep mode when the lid is closed, altho it is set to and will enter sleep if I select it in the shutdown options.
I am at a complete loss as to why the touchpad isn't working so any help would be appreciated.
If you need any more info please let me know.

I got my Dell Inspiron 5570 yesterday. So far everything has been great with it except for one thing - its touchpad, or clickpad to be more accurate. Trouble is, the left touchpad button clicks in a strange way as if it touches in between something so two clicks actually happen. If I press the button several times it starts to behave normally for several minutes after which the crispiness returns. Does anyone else have such issues? Can it be somehow regulated?

I have few DELL laptops and never had any issues with them.
That's why I bought a new one - Inspiron 5547. Everything would be perfect except the series of issues:
- First the laptop shut down itself randomly, or when changing the screen angle. The technican replaced the whole motherboard and some stuff.
- Then the laptop worked OK except a lot of bluescreens caused by plugging in headphones, a HDMI cable or other accessories. Sometimes they worked, sometimes they didn't. The technican replaced the whole motherboard again.
- Then the touchpad started causing issues or I didn't notice them before, because the laptop history is 90% service and repair, 10% - my usage...
The touchpad sometimes gets laggy and the cursor "jumps" on the screen, and also make fake clicks randomly when I'm not even touching anything (even the laptop itself).
Sometimes it happens when the laptop is plugged in to the charger, but there is no rule, it can surprise me.
When it works OK, the gestures aren't. For example I can't see any movemenent on the touchpad icon and can't scroll with two fingers, BUT the touchpad is enabled, as the gestures. The only thing that helps with getting gestures back is restart.
Didn't have these problems on 3737 and 5737.
Of course this time the technican visited me as well. He confirmed something is not right, then he replaced the touchpad with the whole upper "case" around the keyboard. He reset the syste... Read more

A:DELL Inspiron 5547 - faulty touchpad and other things

I ended up returning it to the store I bought it from, it was faulty and unrepairable. It costed me a lot of stress and arguing, because no one wanted me to return it (even DELL).
I needed to record a video about how bad the 5547 is and after that they eventually returned my money.
It was such a painful experience for me - this DELL was 5 times in the service, I needed to argue about this what I don't enjoy, and it was painful for my business as well. I was a loyal DELL customer, but I didn't even get a response on this forum about 5547, which should be retreated from the stores by the way (it's the worsest DELL laptop ever produced).
Because of this painful support, from the money I got back from 5547 I bought a HP laptop and it was cheaper and is much better!!! Goodbye, DELL.

I'm having many issues with my touchpad/trackpad.
- Touchpad loses its function (scrolling, gestures) after using for a while or after sleep/standby mode.
- Touchpad keeps freezing, the pointer constantly stops moving for a short period, like 5 seconds (but I can still do right click) only when I use touchpad. I can still use external mouse normally.
Hope someone can help.

If you haven't done so already I suggest updating the touchpad driver, you may download it here.

I have bought the Dell Inspiron 1545 in 2009 which it had Windows 7, then it stopped working for a long time after it has been fixed due to HDD problems and connectivity.
But now I have upgraded to Windows 8.1 yesterday and for some reason that my Touchpad/Mousepad has stopped working, so I am just wondering if it something to do with the drivers or the connections inside the laptop which it might be loose.
Does this laptop has an enabled/disable feature on the keyboard to lock the mousepad, which I might've accidently pressed which I can't find where it is on the keyboard.
Yours Sincerely,

I'm running windows 10.  The touchpad on my new Dell laptop has ceased to function.  There is no touchpad tab in the Mouse Advanced Settings Options.  I've downloaded the touchpad driver.  There is no Fn key associated with the touchpad.  Anyone know how I can get this working?  It worked when I first purchased the laptop one month ago.

SUBJECT: Touchpad not working. Pointer frozen.
Hello Dell,
This morning I woke up and to my surprise my touchpad has not been working at all. I am currently using a USB mouse, but would still like to know why this has occurred. Up until yesterday, it worked fine. I have had the laptop for almost 1.5 years now, with no problems at all.
Initially when I started the laptop, there was no pointer at all. I had to force shutdown the computer and start again.
When the laptop started up the 2nd time, the pointer was present, but was frozen. So I restarted the computer.
When the laptop started up the 3rd time, the touchpad worked for less than 2 minutes...then froze.
I have gone online looking for a solution, and it seems like nobody has a sure reason as to why this is occurring. The driver is fine and updated...I have checked touchpad settings as well, and everything is on (as in normal settings).
Can someone please help me in figuring out what the problem is?

Thank You

Hi Bitpocketer,
Welcome to the Dell Community Forum,
Please un-install the Touch pad drivers from the Device manager under option Mice and Other Pointing Devices. Re-install the same from the Dell's support website here http://dell.to/1hcxG98. Type in the Service Tag, select the OS type install the Touch pad drivers, restart the computer to check the functionality.
Hope this helped

I am super going bananas from my Dell Inspiron 700m. I think it may be my fault as I will soon explain but let's first get to the problem. I am extremely tempted to throw it against the wall at times. The touchpad mouse and keyboard freezes simultaneously right in the middle of either playing a game or just using the computer for other non-game activities.

The mouse will freeze and I won't be able to type anything at all for a period of a few minutes. When the mouse works again, it may behave erratically for a few seconds and then start functioning again normally. The keyboard freezes and will behave normally once the mouse works again; but, if I touch either before the keyboard returns, then it may cause the keyboard to behave erratic and remain that way forcing me to restart the computer.

As I stated before, I believe it may be my fault. I have tons of music files on my computer and my hard drive is nearly tapped for space. I'm praying it's not a hardware problem b/c I don't have the money to get it repaired. I am a single mom with a very expensive son and can't afford any alternatives. I hope someone can help me find a solution to the problem within reason.
