Internet Explorer spelling check no longer working in Windows 10

Q: Internet Explorer spelling check no longer working in Windows 10

I have received some complaints that the spelling check for Windows 10 does not work within most webforms and/or internal websites. While I am typing this message I can see squigly lines for nearly each word since my native language is Dutch and this message
is in English. This same effect does not work for all forms or fields. Sometimes it will give a squigly line but it won't offer any alternative options. It looks lik the type of field detemines if the spelling check works or not.

In the past we had an add-in for Internet Explorer called Spelling Check which was a lot more reliable. Since it is no longer available we don't know how to offer the same functionality for all forms and websites.
Please let me know if there is anything that can be done to improve this.
The current spelling check built into Windows 10 itself only seems to check certain field types. For example the field I am typing in right now seems to be working just fine, highlighting errors and making suggestions. Other websites however this feature
does not seem to work. It looks like there is a differentiation between field types.
Some of our web applications/sites no longer have a spelling check now which is a hassle for our users. Are there any known restrictions to the field types that are checked?

I have also posted this question in the Windows 10 forum because I am unsure if this should be something posted there since the issue is with the new Windows 10 spelling check however it is related to this browser. I have this exact same issue with Edge
however so I doubt it is specifically related to the browser.

Is there any way to get the spelling check add-on for Windows 10 back?
The problem isn't going to be resolved using a roll back to a previous version. This problem is applicable to all our users running Windows 10. It looks to me there are two possible solutions but I will need help with both of them:

1. Microsoft adjusts the built in spelling check for Windows 10 so it checks every form and website and not just those using SharePoint/whatever technology it is that triggers the spelling check.

2. We manually add the add-in for Internet Explorer 11 (Spell check) and use that once more for all websites. However since this normally was added to Internet Explorer automatically I have no idea where to download it.

We really need a quick solution for this, nearly a 1000 users are having this issue right now and if we can simply resolve it by distributing a simple add-in that would definetly be the desired solution.

The thread you suggested only troubleshoots a situation with Windows 7 and Internet Explorer 11 where the add-in has vanished for some reason. The issue I am describing is the add-in never being added at all because since Windows 8(.1) the built in spelling
check for Windows itself should replace that of Internet Explorer. Sadly the built in Windows spelling check doesn't seem to work for each website like the Internet Explorer add-in used to do.

So if someone can point me in the right direction where to download the old add-in and it works in combination with Windows 10 my problems will be resolved. If this add-in is no longer available for download then the only solution is to make the Windows
spelling check compatible with ALL and EVERY form and website like the add-in used to be.

I hope this describes the issue properly because looking on the forums both here and on technet it looks like a lot of people are running into the same issue.
Sorry for the long wall of text but I want to explain this as thoroughly as possible and prevent questions such as "is your Windows up to date" or "have you added the correct language packs".
Thanks up front!

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hi all,
Earlier this year "Check Spelling as you type" in Word 2003 worked fine. Now it does not and the red wavy line does not appear under wrongly spelled words. (unless I click Spelling and Grammar first).
I have tried every suggestion on this web page with no luck.
The registry item named '1' mentioned in the article was missing.
It's a real mystery as the 'check spelling as you type' still works in PowerPoint and also in Windows Live Mail.
I can reactivate 'check spelling as you type' in a document If I choose to run a spell check via the 'Spelling and Grammar' icon on the toolbar or from the 'tools' menu item. Only then does 'check spelling as you type' begin working again for the current document.
I tried a system restore to June which is our earliest restore point for 2014. (I have restore points for 2012 but inexplicably none for 2013. I'd rather avoid going that far back in time)
I re-installed Microsoft Office 2003
any other ideas?

A:Word 2003 - 'Check Spelling as you type' no longer works correctly

You have have tried everything I would have. Unfortunately Microsoft no longer supports Office 2003 products. So you're not going to get much help from them. Office 2003 support ended the same time that XP support ended.http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/help/support-has-ended-for-office-2003-HA103306332.aspx

Hi!... This post will make my third PC that I'm looking to correct a virus / malware issue with. You guys have rectified 2 systems I've given up on in the past, so I'm confident that this one will be no different.

Here's what I'm getting...

I load up the Pc and I get about 8 "Shell notify Icon" errors. It appears it is linked to my scanner. After 15 minutes goes by and the pc finally loads up.. Internet explorer won't work. Instead I get a Visual Basic error. I've since loaded Mozilla's firefox which is currently running, but based on the speed of switching between pages, I suspect there are some background issues going on.

Looking forward, as always, to your expert assistance.

One week ago, Internet Explorer stopped saving my history. It lets me see what pages I've viewed from weeks ago, but it will not tell me what I looked at last week. During last week, it would also not let me see what I was viewing during that particular day. (Example: on Monday, it showed me as having no history on Monday, same for Tuesday, etc.)

I installed Internet Explorer 7 yesterday, hoping that it would solve the problem. It did, for about ten websites. Then it once again stopped saving my history! It has no pages saved for today's history.

How can I fix this? Using Windows XP, if that matters. Sorry if this post is confusing at all, I was kind of up late trying to get it fixed.

Thanks a million for any help!

My details are:
Windows 98 operating system. Installed Office 97 professional edition over Office 95 professional
My problem is:
My spelling checker no longer works. Instead I get a message:
The spelling check is complete. Text set to (no proofing) was skipped. To find (no proofing) text click Edit/Replace click More, click Language, click Format and choose (no proofing).

On following as best I could the above cryptic instructions, I found to my horror that parts of my document had been deleted. I have tried to activate the spelling check through Spelling & Grammar tab on Tools Options but without any success. I have looked at the custom dictionary. It is the same as the one I have used for years without trouble when I was running the predecessor to MS Word 97 SR-1. If I try to edit the Custom.Dic I get a message to set the Automatic Spell Checking check box in Tools Options - but there is no such box.
If nobody can solve this problem, will the followinf work?I have two hard discs C and D. If all else fails, is it safe for me to reinstall the Office 95 version of Word on the D disk. I have Office 98 on the C disk (where I put all my programs).

I have windows XP, this probably isn't enough info? If anyone has any ideas please spell it out simply!

After I type a new email message in Outlook Express, when I pull down the tools menu, the spelling check option is grayed out, so I am unable to use spelling check. Do I have to buy a spelling check program? My old computer had OE 6.0 with the spelling check in the tools menu. My new computer also is running OE 6.0.

Also, this new computer did not come with Microsoft Word so I installed it from a Microsoft Office 97 disc I have. When I type up a document, I am unable to find a spelling check on any of the pull down menus. There is a "grammer" choice in the tools pull down menu but it does not correct spelling. On the same line as grammer, to the left of it is abc with a checkmark but it doesn't work.

While checking for misspelled words in a document, you probably click the Ignore Once or Ignore All button a few times. Doing so lets you skip a word that you don?t want to change but that the feature thinks might be misspelled. Spelling and Grammar remembers the words you skip and skips them during subsequent checks. Most of the time, that?s what you?ll want. Occasionally, it?s a problem. You might realize that the word was misspelled and you need to change it. Unfortunately, Spelling and Grammar won?t find ignored words, after the fact.

A:WLM spelling check language problem

Hi Highdetailz, welcome to 7F!

If I understand you correctly, you don't have French listed in the choice of languages box as shown in this example, correct?

Source Step #4: Windows Live Mail 2011: Add a second language to the Spell checking feature | a Tech-Recipes Tutorial

If so I may have found a way to add it. There are also two other choices you can try.

1. Run a SFC /scannow to repair any corrupt files, then check to see if WLM has the French listing back. If that doesn't work:

2. Repair WLM: In your Start menu search box, type wlarp , and click the application highlighted in the results list. Answer yes to the UAC prompt.

This brings up the dialog window to repair or uninstall. Select Repair all Windows Essentials programs. WLM is part of Windows Essentials so you have to make that choice. When the repair is finished check to see if you have French listed.

wlarp stands for Windows Live Automatic Repair Program.
If all that doesn't bring France back, the third way is more complicated, from a thread on the MS community Forum, top of page 2:

I use Windows Explorer numerous times every day. I like to navigate to folders using the folders pane and click on items in main view. I sometimes drill down to folders in the main view to finish my navigation until I'm at the folder I wish to see.

All of the sudden I'm finding that when I click on a folder in the main view, a new Explorer window pops up. I did not change any of my preferences in this regard. I went into the Tools-->Folder Options and saw that "Open each folder in the same window" was still selected, as I'd left it long ago (a couple of years now). So, I switched the radio button to the "Open new folder" option, then switched it back to opening the folders in the same view. I clicked "Apply" and closed Explorer (I did this as a kind of "forced" reset). Then I opened Explorer again, and it's still not obeying this setting.

What's going on? Is this influenced by some other settings location I haven't looked at yet?
AFAIK, this started not long after I had uninstalled IE9 and IE8, rolling back to IE7, then installed IE9 again. I did this to resolve a peculiar issue with certain files marked as corrupt in SFC scannow (turns out it's a defect when going to IE9 from IE8). I do realize that Internet Explorer and Windows Explorer share a lot of the same files. But this is functionality exclusive to Windows Explorer. Really strange...

I have run: AVG Scan, Trend Online (overseas java version), a-squared, Microsoft Anti Spy, the active X scan on SpywareInfo.com, and Microsoft Windows Malicious Software Removal Tool.

I have no infections what so ever.

Any clues?

First Explorer started to fail, so I opened up Firefox to try to use it at Trends site to scan & found Trend doesn't support Firefox, so I downloaded Netscape, it worked two times until it started to do the same thing - I never made it to the Trends site.

I am unable to run any other online virus scans since only Firefox works.

Hi all,

I have come across a strange problem on my computer. Internet Explorer is no longer being recognised on perfectly valid sites (including Ripit Digital Music (http://www.ripitdownloads.com/ripitmusicstore/home.aspx?partner=180, a DRM-protected music download site), and Panda ActiveScan (http://www.pandasecurity.com/activescan/index/)). The problem was first noticed after installing the update Microsoft .NET Framework 3.5 SP1. I uninstalled it, to see if things would be right again, but the problem persists. I then uninstalled and reinstalled Internet Explorer, in the thought that something might be corrupted. Still no good.

The possibility now is that malware might be responsible for this odd behaviour. Here is my HJT log:

Hello! So I tried Windows 10 out on my Asus computer for about a day, didn't like it, reverted back to Windows 7 Home Premium, but now IE isn't working. I tried downloading it, but the download would never finish. I've completely deleted all traces of IE on my computer (as far as I can tell) and tried the download again, but still no luck. Please help!
Thank you!

Hi guys, how's it going? I'm having a bit of a problem. At first, I noticed that there was a problem involving proxy settings, so I went to check and there was a forced proxy affecting some port that didn't allow me to uncheck it.
There was also some form of virus causing intruding pop-ups that completely covered the desktop. I ran a virus scan with Kingsoft Antivirus, but the problem persisted. I found out that Google Chrome was causing the virus, so I deleted the entire browser since no one uses it, and now the Internet explorer app wont work.. It allows you to click the buttons but they give no effect.
I checked the desktop internet explorer and it was working fine. It's where I'm sending this post in from. But the app itself is down. I checked to see if the proxy was there, but the box was unchecked and the proxy appeared to be gone. Yet and still the internet explorer app won't work. I ran an FRST scan and I'm going to attach it to this post. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I have no idea... but yesterday my firefox was doing the 'connecting to www.......' and then I would need to hit enter again for it to go to the website to actually load.I got tired of it and I reformatted my computer, and it still happened. I tried internet explorer, and it still happened.I have a 15MBit connection and I tried both wireless/hardwired connection. It seems this happens only with the browsers, and not with games (MW2, etc). What can I do to fix this?Edit: I uploaded a video of it:

.XML files no longer open in Internet Ex-PLODE-r (have IE 11 installed) Dunno if this bug is related/a result of the repair install or....hmmm...the recent IE OOB patch?... or unrelated to either/or? I know they were opening in IE (prior to the repair install) and only just now discovered they didn't open (after IE patch).

XML's open fine in notepad but opening in IE shows a blank screen & blank address:

Attachment 316249

.XML File association IS set to Internet Ex-PLODE-r

Attachment 316251

EDIT TO ADD: Checked in Internet Options> Advanced> Security> "Enable native XMLHTTP support" is checked.

2nd Edit: Changed file association to Firefox and XML's open fine there. I'm thinking more and more it has to do with KB2929437 which "enhances" IE 11 (adds developer tools, Enhanced Mode, etc).

3rd Edit: Related to this thread Need help Re:sfc /scannow cannot repair shellbrd.dll

A:.XML files no longer open in Internet Explorer

I took these steps, not necessarily in this order & rebooting in between steps:

removed KB2929437
removed KB2964358
installed KB2925418
installed KB2936068
installed KB2964444

Checked if XML opened in IE. No joy, which indicated the problem was not with the updates. Changed file association to Firefox, opened OK. Reset default XML assoc back to IE. No joy. Reset IE browser settings to default. Nojoy. Removed/reinstalled IE from CPL> Turn on/off. No joy. Finally ran SFC (which I probably should have done first, then again hindsight= 20/20) which repaired:

Greetings and Salutations,

Internet Explorer on my friend's brand new PC is no longer working- it is pointing to a porn site, and will not change, despite adjusting Internet settings.

I am having a hard time fixing this remotely since the owner of the PC not only cannot get online to download anti adware software, but even Outlook Express refuses to allow the software to be downloaded when I send it as an attachment. We were using Outlook Express as a workaround mail client since he cannot get to the Internet...

Seeing as how this PC is less than a week old, I was hoping Dell could help him- instead he was on the phone with "Samantha" from India for one hour and she ended up telling him to contact his internet service provider! I know that the problem is microsoft windows- based. I just don't know how I can help such a compromised PC, remotely (I am 100 miles from it & my friend).

We would like to be able to analyze & clean the registry, restore Intrernet Explorer, and ultimately protect the computer from falling prey to this again, if possible. I just don't know if/how this can be done while he cannot use IE.

Any help you can provide us would be very much appreciated.

This is a peculiar little error that's been spreading through our house, though I don't think it's a virus since we don't share files or anything like that.
See, it started with my mom's computer, where it appeared she was connected to the internet, but no programs could actually operate online. As I said, it was solely her computer, and it was eventually remedied when she reinstalled Windows. Then, approximately two weeks later, we switched internet providers and went from DSL to a cable modem.
Then my computer had the same error, where it said I was connected but couldn't do anything. It wasn't the new connection, other computers and mobile devices worked fine. I began reinstalling Windows, and it asked me to end the program, deauthorize accounts from iTunes, and then resume. I did so, and upon resumption, it connected to the internet fine and began updating. Firefox started working; problem was solved!
So I thought.
Just a couple hours ago, I lost my connection again and just completed a reinstallation of Windows. No dice; I can't get on and I'm using my dad's work laptop at the moment. For the fun of it, I just inputted ipconfig into my command menu, and it's displaying almost all fields as "media disconnected." I'm running Windows 7. Dunno what other info would be useful. Anyway, thanks in advance!

Have you tried opening "Internet Explorer without Addons"? There should be an icon that says this under Start | Programs | Accessories | System Tools | IE (no addons). It will attempt to run IE without any of it's addons, just the core program itself. If it works then, you're having a problem with one of the addons that IE is running right now.

My laptops IE7 and Firefox stopped working, I rebuilt the laptop and installed SP3 and browsers worked again, after applying windows updates the browser is unable to connect to websites and times out with connection problem.
I also tried updating to IE8, but the same thing happened. If I rollback with system restore everything works again. all of the updates starting 94xx are ok.

I am unable to identify which update is doing this has anyone else experienced this ?

I think it must have been one of the latest patches this week that broke it. Any help withthis is appreciated.

A:Internet explorer not working after windows update

I had similar problem but finally figured it out.

My issue was with Windows Zero Configuration Service after install of SP3. Just had to restart the service manually from control panel and BOOM, internet works. This particular problem happens mostly on wireless network adapters (mine is a d-link DWA-110 adapter).

Other services you should restart = DHCP! This was the root cause of the problem due to a conflict with Zero Configuration i think. Freakin MS, can't even get their own modules working properly together

If this does not work please do reply i will provide u with some other solution

There should be an option in the start menu to run Internet Explorer with Add-Ons disabled. Have you tried this? I would aslo recommend switching browsers if possible, try Firefox or Chrome.
