crashing when any game is played

Q: crashing when any game is played

hi, i hope someone can help, er.. my computer is crashing within roughly the first 10 mins of starting any game up, eg. sims, HL2, day of defeat, battle for middle earth, i have updated my radeon 9800 series with the latest driver and the problem is still happening, i have no clue where to start, my usual method of fixing something like this would be a format :giddy: but as my xp disc has gone walkabout i have to resort to fixing it the "proper way", i would be eternally grateful if anyone has a clue what my prob is and how i can fix it ~ caren

Preferred Solution: crashing when any game is played

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

You probably have a cheapo power supply(or just a low wattage model) that doesn't have as much power as your system will require. Check the brand, wattage, and amperages per rail(12v, 3.3v, 5v, etc), and post back if you can. The Psu(power supply unit) is in the top back corner of the case usually, so you'll have to open the case to look at it.

Edit: Welcome to Techspot BTW.

is there some sort of file or something that tells you that a game can only be played on a PC. our house only has laptops, and i was wondering if you could make the game for laptop.

pls pls pls help.

A:How do you know if a game can only be played on a PC?

The main thing that stops laptops from being able to run games is the speed of the built in graphics. Most laptops have only very basic graphics suitable for web browsing, editing photos and typing letters. If you pay a bit more you can get a "gaming" laptop that has a GeForce or Radeon graphics chip built in, some high-end laptops are as fast as a high-end gaming desktop, but you'll pay twice as much for them. You can upgrade the graphics in a few laptops, but most of them are stuck with what they came with.

I found a fee mmorpg the problem is it doesn't have any type of help system at all. The webpage is half gone. Also there are enough people playing it but most are speaking other languages so I can't seem to get any help.

Just wondered if anyone has played R.O.S.E Online - www.roseon.com?

What I don't understand is how do you get spells? I trained to be a muse and I have a ton of points but I don't know how to train in any of the things in the skill tree. I pull it all up and theres a bunch of items but nowhere to "train"

Also once that gets answered I guess the next question is to find out if you put points into 1 a whole bunch of times is that better than putting a point in to get the skill then saving your other points for the other skills? I.E. should you have alot of skills with small amounts of points or be point heavy in 1 skill?

Hi guys, I signed up because I'm having an issue with my computer.

I will get to the point straight away - my computer crashes each time I play a game, sometimes the first minute, sometimes it takes 15 minutes, and sometimes it doesn't crash at all! I've had this problem for about half a year now, and figured I could fix it myself, but I've lost all hope and come to you hoping you could help me out.

Another point to add is that I never physically get to see the BSOD myself, the screen and sound just freezes.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Okay, i don't see how putting information about my system is going to change this challenge. i have NETWORK AND SHARING CENTER along with this other control panel item called PEOPLE NEAR ME. Now i simply would like to know how i can set the parameters or what files i would need for my Windows Vista (i doubt it matters on what bit type) laptop to play a NETWORK GAME from the Duke3D's setmain.exe or setup.exe (setup.exe seems to be the one that does anything for attempting at network games). ??????????????????????????????????????????

A:Duke3D played with DOSBOX for a NETWORK GAME

If you can get Duke Nukem to see your network card, remember that this game uses IPX/SPX (Novell), not TCP/IP. You have to install this protocol as it is not installed by default and some routers don't recognize it. You may need to use just a switch.

Also, unless you encapsulate it inside of TCP/IP, you can't play the game over the Internet.

Today I remembered the name of a game I played when I was quite young, one of the first games I played. It is called the neverhood, and was around at the sort of time when windows 95 was the latest OS. I managed to find a copy today and was all excited to play this game, but the colours are really strange, certain shades are fluorescent pink, green, yellow, etc while other lighter shades are the colour they are meant to be. I can only assume this is because I am using the wrong colour depth or something, the problems were lessened when I set my colour depth to 16bit, but still not solved.

Am I right that colour depth is my problem? And how would I try 8bit colour?

I am on windows 7 pro, with a geforce 210 gpu.

A:Strange colours in old old game played on windows 7

As far as i know to run 8 bit games successfully you need to be running a 32bit OS what you could do since you have windows 7 Pro is try the game in XP Mode and see if that works other than that we will have to wait and see what others say. I remember Fallout 1 doing a retarded graphics glitch too although I had no luck in fixing that, so best of luck.

I bought my HP Pavilion laptop on Boxing Day, so it's still under warranty should I need to return it. The device can cope with regular browsing (via Microsoft Edge) but malfunctions when it encounters videos. Usually the page will stop responding once I press play, and even when it recovers the sound output will mysteriously decrease over time until I can barely hear it (volume displays unchanged). Google suggests there's an issue with Flash, but I paid to have the laptop set up so it seems unlikely that it wouldn't be properly installed. Can this be resolved at home, or should I cart it back to the store to be looked at/replaced?

Not sure if this is a Win XP prob or not. Couldn't find a video forum, so am posting here. A few weeks ago, I noticed a new problem. When downloading video files from Rapidshare, I can't CHOOSE where to save the file, it just goes to a default download folder in My Documents. Anyway, when playing the videos, they all work, but I CAN NOT use the seek buttons, or slider or the videos crash around 98 percent of the time. Anyone know what might be going on with this? Vids played from any other folders work fine. I've tried moving the vid file from the downloads folder (the problematic one) onto another folder, but this does not solve the issue. It still crashed when seeking.

I did an error report btw and once or twice it gave me feedback that it may be a codex problem and that they (not sure if "they" meant windows or a codex company like divx) are working on it. Not sure how accurate this is though.

If you need any other of my system info. of mine feel free to ask and I'll hopefully know it and give it to you. Thanks.

I posted this on windows7forums as well but I thought I'd post it here too, since I need all the help I can get with this strange problem...

My posts on there from yesterday:

I recently purchased Bulletstorm, and received it last night, installed it, played it, no problem. Untill I was playing for about 2 hours. The graphics got stuck, but the sound kept going. I did Ctrl-Alt-Del and click run taskmanager, it went to the desktop, and said Bulletstorm was still active. So I clicked on Bulletstorm again and it worked again. Then it happened again. This time Ctrl-Alt-Del did nothing, and the screen went black.

I waited a minute or two to see if anything would happen, but it didn't, so I tried to reboot the machine. It failed to boot, it got to the Windows start-up screen, then rebooted itself, same problem.

I tried to reboot it into safe mode and it got to safe mode. It gave a message that Windows 7 had encountered a blue screen (this is why I'm posting this all here), and it said it had recovered. So I thought 'ok, so that works', but a minute later safe mode crashed (it got stuck, nothing responded, not even the mouse).

I tried to reboot it again, but same problem as before.

(Before you ask, yes I've got the minimum requirements for Bulletstorm, by far.)

My specs:

Intel? Core? i7 870 Processor 2.93 GHz
6144 MB RAM

Hello Dennis,
Please visit this tutorial to fix startup errors---> Startup Repair
It may require at least 3 times to fix the problem.

Please remove any CD virtualization programs such as Daemon Tools and Alcohol 120%. They use a driver, found in your dmp, sptd.sys, that is notorious for causing BSODs. Use this SPTD uninstaller when you're done: DuplexSecure - Downloads
You can use MagicDisc as an alternative: Freeware MagicISO Virtual CD/DVD-ROM(MagicDisc) Overview

Do the followings...
- Boot into Safe Mode with Networking
- Uninstall the Display Drivers
- Use Driver Sweeper to sweep the traces of the driver Guru3D - Driver Sweeper
- Reboot into Normal Mode
- Install the latest version NVIDIA DRIVERS 266.58 WHQL

A:Dell Inspiron N4110 -System crashed when Game Played AFTER- No Display nothing black screen,NoHard drive Activity

I would recommend starting with removing the battery, then unplugging the AC adapter, and then holding down the power button for 15 seconds or so. After this release the button, put back in the battery and AC adapter, and lastly press the power button. Then see if the system boots up. If this doesn't work, you could try doing minimal boot, like removing memory/HDD just to see if you get a screen. Unfortunately if none of this works, it sounds like it might be a hardware issue. Here is a link for the service manual to remove items, let me know if you have any questions. Best regards,Brad

A:haveing problems playing a game with out it either randomlly crashing the game...

first of all is this limited to this game alone?do other games run fine?check for any overheating signs, install the latest drivers for your video card and your mobo, direct x and any other update.see if you meet the minimum requirements for the game.(this was just the official response you would get from a techie..so bear with me)

if this is happening in this game only and not in any other and your pc isnt overheating and meeting the minimum requirements, then there is a good chance its an issue with your optical drive, try a combo drive if you've got any around.its an incompatibility issue with some of the games.good luck

I have an ongoing issue where I log onto the glyph launcher, log onto my server, play for a while, sometimes hours with no issue but then BOOM, the game just closes on me and I'm booted back to the launcher. I have to push the PLAY button again, log into the server again, but it seems once the game boots me out then the crashing becomes more frequent.

I at first reported it to Trion support (useless) all they do is copy and paste previous responses from previous games sometimes not even removing the other game titles from it, but all in all I have spent over a month with them and I have:

1. Expanded my paging file to initial size of 1X RAM size max size 2X RAM size (to handle the memory of the game)
2. Switched from DirectX11 down to DirectX9 and back again. (in game)
3. Lowered my FPS (frames per second) to 100 (in game)
4. Switched off Multithread rendering and VSync (in game)
5. They have also had me change the priority of the game archeage.exe to high to see if that helps and it doesn't
( I would start the launcher, log onto the game and the server, go into the character screen, then cntrl + alt + delete into task manager and right click the process and set the priority to high then go back into the game)

Any help would be greatly appreciated

The best thing to do is don't open mail you don't know. They will even use the name of your mail provider to get you to open the file. It might be just junk mail or may contain a virus. Mark as spam and ignore it. I get several of these a day. Most are recognizable as ads, but I mark them all as spam so they will be blacklisted and won't get through to you again with that same address. If in doubt throw it out!

A:Game crashing !

this from activision

Make sure you have the latest video and sound card drivers from the manufacturers' websites.
Set your desktop to a resolution of 800x600, 32 bit True Color.
1) Right-click on your desktop and select Properties.
2) Click the Settings tab.
3) Set your screen area to 800x600.
4) Set the colors to 32 Bit (True Color). Under Windows NT this will be listed as 65554 colors.
5) Click Apply and OK.
All background applications must be shutdown prior to running the game.

Delete the options.cfg file from the directory where you installed the game.

Could you possibly post some more info on your system :

Which version of Win ? How much Ram ? What CPU ? What version of Direct X - you can check most of this if you :

Start > Run and type DXDIAG then look at the interface that appears.

Are you shutting down all non essential apps before starting these games as other things like Anti Virus progs will hog your resources. Especially as onboard graphics is using your system ram to function.

Its also worth considering that with such intense games you are likely to need a dedicated graphics card.

I didn't get this problem untill today and what happens is when I play a game it crashes but strangely as it's hard to explain. The games that I have played recently that crash are Hitman 2 in particular, sometimes fm 08 and always warcraft 3.

I sort of have an idea why my games crash, but not entirely sure.

And when I say games crash, I mean EVERY game I've played on my new laptop has crashed at one point or another randomly.

Manufacturer: ASUS - A8JP Notebook
Processor: Intel Core 2 Duo T7200 (2.00 GHz)
Memory: DDR2 200-Pin Notebook Memory (1 GB)
Hard Drive: 5400 RPM (120GB - 65 & 45 GB Partitions)
Video Card: ATi Mobility Radeon X1700 (256 MB)
Sound Card: SoundMAX Integrated HD Audio
Operating System: Windows XP - Media Center Edition

Anyways, ATi decided to be retarded and release the X1700 Radeon, only to tell users that it is not developing any drivers or updates for it.

So, using the OEM driver from ASUS does not help and modded driver (while improving performance) still give me crashes.

Any ideas? Or is this problem way too broad as I fear it is.

In the last 4 days i have been experiencing crashes while playing MTW2 whilst on the battlemap.

It started with the screen flipping back to desktop, as though ALT TAB had been pressed, no error messages,
i just clicked the MTW2 icon on the side bar and returned to the game.
Next the above mentioned behaviour started being accompanied by a message saying
"MM driver has stopped working" - since yesterday this message has stopped appearing.

Last 2 days, whilst on the battle screen MTW2 just crashes with the Win 7 message box that says
this program has stopped working. It crashes all the time know whilst playing, but not immediatly,
about after 15 - 20 minuetes on the battle map.
Other events.
Recently on boot up a box entitled "AML device install" would briefly appear after windows has loaded,
i have disabled this in MSCONFIG - following web site advice.
Power cable from wall socket to PSU blew, never had this before, simply replaced it. It was about 5 years old.

A:Game crashing

Have you actually tried to reinstall the game?

(And for the sake of clarification, with MTW2 you refer to Medieval: Total War 2?)

And if your power cable blows up, that's pretty bad. No idea what could cause that, if it's just a cable without anything else. But your PSU, 520W, isn't too much.

Keep these things in mind;

PSU usually gives less power than in the description. And then, if it's old, your capacitors are getting worn out and your computer will get lot less power than it's supposed to.

However, if your computer wouldn't get enough power, it would crash completely and you'd get constantly overheating issues. But just in case, do you have anything to check your temperatures with?

A:laptop keeps crashing during a game

Don't play warcraft 3? lol just kidding

Sounds like it could b a dodgey grafix driver. Goto the manufacturer website and download the latest driver. Could also b a memory problem.

Goto c:\windows\minidumps, get the latest mini dump and post it here so i can analyse it.

Hi everyone. Fairly new laptop (less than 6 months) which recently has been crashing in a really odd way when doing playing Dota 2. No BSOD or anything, just straight shuts down. What usually happens is I start up the game, get into gameplay (past title screen loading screen etc.), get 25-30 minutes into game and it crashes.
The strange thing is this only happens under a few conditions. The battery setting has to be set to high performance and the charger has to be plugged in. The crashes never happen when the machine is running on battery alone.
laptop is a Toshiba Satellite s50t-B running windows 10
i7 4510U cpu
8GB ram
AMD Radeon R7 M260
Really appreciate any help at all. Thanks everyone.

Hi guys
I'm at my wits end.
I have these incidents where I'll be playing a game [namely City of Heroes ], and about half an hour into the game, my keyboard will decide that it won't let me move using the keys - neither will it allow me to use the Windows key to get out of the gaming window, which I normally have no problem with. When I do press the windows key, I can only see half of the taskbar, and the game is still visible. In-game animations are playing as normal, yet I can't select the CoH tab in the taskbar to return to the game.

I can, however, type as normal (on the first sign of this happening).

I end up having to switch it off from the mains!

It's been doing this for a while now, on and off - I'm worried I will damage the hard drive, or I've already damaged it.
I've attached a pic of the EventTracker log which shows "Printers" as the category - I must say though, a printer is not attached [which is even more weird]

There are a few games on the list i cannot play on my computer. As like LOTR online,D&D online and cod 2 but usually cod 2 works for a while or all day but rarely does the same as the first 2 but not as consistant. When i start LOTR online i can play for like 2 mins the boom the picture that the game was showing at the time freezes, the game goes on but i can only see what was on screen when it crashes. Then after about 30 seconds my monitor will go into sleep mode. I have to hard boot the computer to do anything else.
here is some of my specs if you need more please ask.
